XXVIII 1 The prophet threatneth Ephraim for their pride and drunkenness 5 The residue shall be advanced in the kingdom of Christ 7 He rebuketh their errour 9 their untowardness to learn 14 and their security 16 Christ the sure foundationis promised 18 Their security shall be tried 23 They are incited to the consideration of Gods discreet providence WO to the crown of pride to the drunkards of Ephraim whose glorious beauty is a sading stower which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are †Heb. broken overcome with wine 2 Behold the Lord hath a mighty and strong one which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm as a floud of mighty waters overflowing shall cast down to the earth with the hand 3 The crown of pride the drunkards of Ephraim shall be troden †Heb. with feet under feet 4 And the glorious beauty which is on the head of the fat valley shall be a fading flower and as the hasty fruit before the summer which when he that looketh upon it seeth it while it is yet in his hand he †Heb. swalloweth eateth it up 5 ¶ In that day shall the LORD of hosts be for a crown of glory and for a diadem of beauty unto the residue of his people 6 And for a spirit of judgement to him that sitteth in judgement and for strength to them that turn the battel to the gate 7 ¶ But they also have erred through wine and through strong drink are out of the way the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink they are swallowed up of wine they are out of the way through strong drink they err in vision they stumble in judgement 8 For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness so that there is no place clean 9 ¶ Whom shall he teach knowledge and whom shall he make to understand †Heb. the bearing doctrine them that are weaned from the milk and drawn from the breasts 10 For precept ‖ Or hath been must be upon precept precept upon precept line upon line line upon line here a little and there a little 11 For with †Heb. stammerings of lips * 1 Cor. 14.21 stammering lips and another tongue ‖ Or he hath spoken will he speak to this people 12 To whom he said This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest and this is the refreshing yet they would not hear 13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept precept upon precept line upon line line upon line here a little and there a little that they might go and fall backward and be broken and snared and taken 14 ¶ Wherefore hear the word of the LORD ye scornful men that rule this people which is in Jerusalem 15 Because ye have said We have made a covenant with death and with hell are we at agreement when the overflowing scourge shall pass through it shall not come unto us for we have made lies our refuge and under falihood have we hid our selves 16 ¶ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD Behold I lay in Zion for a foundation * Psal 118.22 Matth. 21.42 Act. 4.11 Rom. 9.33 10.11 1 Pet 2.6 7 8. a stone a tried stone a precious corner stone a sure foundation he that believeth shall not make haste 17 Judgement also will I lay to the line and righteousness to the plummet and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies and the waters shall overflow the hiding place 18 ¶ And you covenant with death shall be disanulled and your agreement with hell shall not stand when the overflowing scourge shall pass through 〈◊〉 ye shall be †Heb. a treaâ—ing down to it troden down by it 19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you for morning by morning shall it pass over by day and by night and it shall be a vexation onely ‖ Or when be shall make you to understand doctrine to understand the
utterly ‖ Or abolished rooted out 11 Who then should make more mourning then she that hath lost so great a multitude and not thou which art sorry but for one 12 But if thou sayest unto me My lamentation is not like the earths because I have lost the fruit of my womb which I brought forth with pains and bare with sorrows 13 ‖ But the earth after the manner of the earth whereinto the present multitude is gone again as it came out But the earth not so for the multitude present in it according to the course of the earth is gone as it came 14 Then say I unto thee Like as thou hast brought forth with labour even so the earth also hath given her fruit namely man ever since the beginning unto him that made her 15 Now therefore keep thy sorrow to thy self and bear with a good courage that which hath be faln thee 16 For it thou shalt acknowledge the determination of God to be just thou shalt both receive thy son in time and shalt be commended amongst women 17 Go thy way then into the city to thine husband 18 And she said unto me That will I not do I will not go into the city but here will I die 19 So I proceeded to speak further unto her and said 20 Do not so but be counselled by me for how many are the adversities of Sion be comforted in regard of the sorrow of Jerusalem 21 For thou seest that our sanctuary is said waste our altar broken down our temple destroyed 22 Our psaltery is laid on the ground our song is put to silence our rejoycing is at an end the light of our candlestick is put out the ark of our covenant is spoiled our holy things are defiled and the name that is called upon us is almost profaned our children are put to shame our priests are burnt our Levites are gone into captivity our virgins are defiled and our wives ravished our righteous men carried away our little ones destroyed our young men are brought in bondage and our strong men are become weak 23 And which is the greatest of all the seal of Sion hath now lost her honour for she is delivered into the hands of them that hate us 24 And therefore shake off thy great heaviness and put away the multitude of sorrows that the Mighty may be merciful unto thee again and the Highest shall give thee rest and ease from thy labour 25 And it came to pass while I was talking with her behold her face upon a sudden shined exceedingly and her countenance glistered so that I was afraid of her and mused what it might be 26 And behold suddenly she made a great cry very fearful so that the earth shook at the noise of the woman 27 And I looked and behold the woman appeared unto me no more but there was a city builded and a large place shewed it self from the foundations then was I afraid and cried with a loud voice and said 28 Where is * Ch. 4.1 Uriel the angel who came unto me at the first for he hath caused me to fall ‖ Or into the multitude in a trance into many trances and mine end is turned into corruption and my prayer to rebuke 29 And as I was speaking these words behold he came unto me and looked upon me 30 And so I say as one that had been dead and mine understanding was taken from me and he took me by the right hand and comforted me and set me upon my feet and said unto me 31 What aileth thee and why art thou so disquieted and why is thine understanding troubled and the thoughts of thine heart 32 And I said Because thou hast forsaken me and yet I did according to thy * Chap 5.20 words and I went into the field and so I have seen and yet see that I am not able to express 33 And he said unto me Stand up manfully and I will advise thee 34 Then said I Speak on my lord in me onely forsake me not lest I die frustrate of my hope 35 For I have seen that I knew not and hear that I do not know 36 Or is my sense deceived or my soul in a dream 37 Now therefore I beseech thee that thou wilt shew thy servant of this ‖ Or trance vision 38 He answered me then and said Hear me and I shall inform thee and tell thee wherefore thou art afraid for the Highest will reveal many secret things unto thee 39 He hath seen that thy ‖ Or purpose way is right for that thou sorrowest continually for thy people and makest great lamentation for Sion 40 This therefore is the meaning of the vision which thou lately sawest 41 Thou sawest a woman mourning and thou beganst to comfort her 42 But now seest thou the likeness of the woman no more but there appeared unto thee a city builded 43 And whereas she told thee of the death of her son this is the ‖ Or interpretation solution 44 This woman whom thou sawest is Sion and whereas she said unto thee even she whom thou seest as a city builded 45 Whereas I say she said unto thee that she hath been thirty years barren those are the thirty years wherein there was no offering made in her 46 But after thirty years Solomon builded the city and offered offerings and then bare the barren a son 47 And whereas she told thee that she nourished him with labour that was the dwelling in Jerusalem 48 But whereas she said unto thee That my son coming into his marriage-chamber hapned to have a fall and died this was the destruction that came to Jerusalem 49 And behold thou sawest her likeness and because she mourned for her son thou beganst to comfort her and of these things which have chanced these are to be opened unto thee 50 For now the most High seeth that thou art grieved unfeignedly and sufferest from thy whole heart for her so hath he shewed thee the brightness of her glory and the comeliness of her beauty 51 And therefore I bade thee remain in the field where no house was builded 52 For I knew that the Highest would shew this unto thee 53 Therefore I commanded thee to go into the field where no foundation of any building was 54 For in the place wherein the Highest beginneth to shew his city there can no mans building be able to stand 55 And therefore sear not let not thine heart he affrighted but go thy way in and see the beauty and greatness of the building as much as thine eyes be able to see 56 And then shalt thou hear as much as thine ears may comprehend 57 For thou art blessed above many other and ‖ Or at called to be with c. art called with the Highest and so are but few 58 But to morrow at night thou shalt remain here 59 And so shall the Highest shew thee visions of the ‖ Or
he put him aside and commanded to bring the other and said unto him O thou seed of Chanaan and not of Juda beauty hath deceived thee and lust hath perverted thine heart 57 Thus have ye dealt with the daughters of Israel and they for fear companied with you but the daughter of Juda would not abide your wickedness 58 Now therefore tell me Under what tree didst thou take them companying together Who answered Under a ‖ Or kinde of oak holm-tree 59 Then said Daniel unto him Well thou hast also lied against thine own head for the angel of God waiteth with the sword to cut thee in two that he may destroy you 60 With that all the assembly cried out with a loud voice and praised God who saveth them that trust in him 61 And they rose against the two elders for Daniel had convctied them of false witness by their own mouth 62 And according to the law of Moses * Deut. 19.19 Prov. 19.5 they did unto them in such sort as they maliciously intended to do to their neighbour and they put them to death Thus the innocent bloud was saved the same day 63 Therefore Chelcias and his wife praised God for their daughter Susanna with Joacim her husband and all the kindred because there was no dishonesty found in her 64 From that day forth was Daniel had in great reputation in the sight of the people ¶ The history of the destruction of †Gr. Bels dragon Bel and the Dragon cut off from the end of DANIEL 19 The fraud of Bels priests is discovered by Daniel 27 and the dragon slain which was worshipped 33 Daniel is preserved in the lions â—en 42 The king doth acknowledge the God of Daniel and casteth his enemies into the same den ANd king Astyages was gathered to his fathers and Cyrus of Persia received his kingdom 2 And Daniel ‖ Or liveâ— with the king conversed with the king and was honoured above all his friends 3 Now the Babylonians had an idol called Bel. and there were spent upon him every day twelve great measures of fine flour and fourty sheep and six vessels of wine 4 And the king worshipped it and went daily to adore it but Daniel worshipped his own God And the king said unto him Why dost not thou worship Bel 5 Who answered and said Because I may not worship idols made with hands but the living God who hath created the heaven and the earth and hath sovereignty over all flesh 6 Then said the king unto him Thinkest thou not that Bel is a living god seest thou not how much he eateth and drinketh every day 7 Then Daniel smiled and said O king be not deceived for this is but clay within and brass without and did never * Ecclus 30.19 eat or drink any thing 8 So the king was wroth and called for his priests and said unto them If ye tell me not who this is that devoureth these expenses ye shall die 9 But if you can certifie me that Bel devoureth them then Daniel shall die for he hath spoken blasphemy against Bel. And Daniel said unto the king Let it be according to thy word 10 Now the priests of Bel were threescore and ten beside their wives and children and the king went with Daniel into the temple of Bel. 11 So Bels priests said Lo we go out but thou O king set on the meat and make ready the wine and shut the door fast and seal it with thine own signet 12 And to morrow when thou comest in if thou findest not that Bel hath eaten up all we will suffer death or else Daniel that speaketh falsly against us 13 And they little regarded it for under the table they had made a privy entrance whereby they entred in continually and consumed those things 14 So when they were gone forth the king set meats before Bel. Now Daniel had commanded his servants to bring ashes and those they strewed throughout all the temple in the presence of the king alone then went they out and shut the door and sealed it with the kings signet and so departed 15 Now in the night came the priests with their wives and children as they were wont to do and did eat and drink up all 16 In the morning betime the king arose and Daniel with him 17 And the king said Daniel are the seals whole And he said Yea O king they be whole 18 And assoon as he had opened the door the king looked upon the table and cried with a loud voice Great art thou O Bel and with thee is no deceit at all 19 Then laughed Daniel and held the king that he should not go in and said Behold now the pavement and mark well whose footsteps are these 20 And the king said I see the footsteps of men women and children And then the king was angry 21 And took the priests with their wives and children who shewed him the privy doors where they came in and consumed such things as were upon the table 22 Therefore the king slew them and delivered Bel into Daniels power who destroyed him and his temple 23 ‖ Some add this title Of the dragon And in that same place there was a great dragon which they of Babylon worshipped 24 And the king said unto Daniel Wilt thou also say that this is of brass so he liveth he eateth and drinketh thou canst not say that he is no living god therefore worship him 25 Then said Daniel unto the king I will worship the Lord my God for he is the living God 26 But give me leave O king and I shall slay this dragon without sword or staff The king said I give thee leave 27 Then Daniel took pitch and fat and hair and did seethe them together and made lumps thereof this he put in the dragons mouth and so the dragon burst in sunder and Daniel said ‖ Or Behold what you worship Lo These are the gods you worship 28 When they of Babylon heard that they took great indignation and conspired against the king saying The king is become a Jew and he hath destroyed Bel he hath slain the dragon and put the priests to death 29 So they came to the king and said Deliver us Daniel or else we will destroy thee and thine house 30 Now when the king saw that they pressed him sore being constrained he * Dan 6.16 delivered Daniel unto them 31 Who cast him into the lions den where he was six days 32 And in the den there were seven lions and they had given them every day ‖ Or two slaves two carcases and two sheep which then were not given to them to the intent they might devour Daniel 33 Now there was in Jewry a prophet called Habbacuc who had ‖ Or sod made pottage and had broken bread in a bowl and was going into the field for to bring it to the reapers 34 But the angel of the Lord said unto Habbacuc Go
unto death or of obedience unto righteousness 17 But God be thanked that ye were the servants of sin but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine †Gr. whereto ye were delivered which was delivered you 18 Being then made free from sin ye became the servants of righteousness 19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh for as ye have yeelded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity even so now yeeld your members servants to righteousness unto holiness 20 For when ye were the servants of sin ye were free †Gr. to righteousness from righteousness 21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed for the end of those things is death 22 But now being made free from sin and become servants to God ye have your fruit unto holiness and the end everlasting life 23 For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. CHAP. VII 1 No law hath power over a man longer then he liveth 4 But we are dead to the law 7 Yet is not the law sin 12 but holy just good 16 as I acknowledge who am grieved because I cannot keep it KNow ye not brethren for I speak to them that know the law how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth 2 For * 1 Cor. 7.39 the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth but if the husband be dead she is loosed from the law of her husband 3 So then if while her husband liveth she be married to another man she shall be called an adulteress but if her husband be dead she is free from that law so that she is no adulteress though she be married to another man 4 Wherefore my brethren ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ that ye should be married to another even to him who is raised from the dead that we should bring forth fruit unto God 5 For when we were in the flesh the †Gr. passions motions of sins which were by the law did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death 6 But now we are delivered from the law ‖ Or being dead to that that being dead wherein we were held that we should serve in newness of spirit and not in the oldness of the letter 7 What shall we say then Is the law sin God forbid Nay I had not known sin but by the law for I had not known ‖ Or concupiscence lust except the law had said * Ex. 20.17 Deut. 5.21 Thou shalt not cover 8 But sin taking occasion by the commandment wrought in me all manner of concupiscence For without the law sin was dead 9 For I was alive without the law once but when the commandment came sin revived and I died 10 And the commandment which was ordained to life I found to be unto death 11 For sin taking occasion by the commandment deceived me and by it slew me 12 Wherefore the law is holy and the commandment holy and just and good 13 Was then that which is good made death unto me God forbid But sin that it might appear sin working death in me by that which is good that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful 14 For we know that the law is spiritual but I am carnal sold under sin 15 For that which I do I †Gr. know allow not for what I would that do I not but what I hate that do I. 16 If then I do that which I would not I consent unto the law that it is good 17 Now then it is no more I that do it but sin that dwelleth in me 18 For I know that in me that is in my flesh dwelleth no good thing for to will is present with me but how to perform that which is good I finde not 19 For the good that I would I do not but the evil which I would not that I do 20 Now if I do that I would not it is no more I that do it but sin that dwelleth in me 21 I finde then a law that when I would do good evil is present with me 22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man 23 But I see another law in my members warring against the law of my minde and bringing me into â—aptivity to the law of sin which is in my members 24 O wretched man that I am who shall deliver me from ‖ Or this body of death the body of this death 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the minde I my self serve the law of God but with the flesh the law of sin CHAP. VIII 1 They that are in Christ and live according to the Spirit are free from condemnation 5 13 What harm cometh of the flesh 6 14 and what good of the Spirit 17 and what of being Gods children 19 whose glorious deliverance all things long for 29 It was beforehand dâ—creed from God 38 What can sever us from his love THere is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death 3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and ‖ Or by a sacrifice for sin for sin condemned sin in the flesh 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit 5 For they that are after the flesh do minde the things of the flesh but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit 6 For †Gr. the minding of the flesh to be carnally minded is death but †Gr. the minding of the Spirit to be spiritually minded is life and peace 7 Because †Gr. the minding of the flesh the carnal minde is enmity against God for it is not subject to the law of God neither indeed can be 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God 9 But ye are not in the flesh but in the Spirit if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ he is none of his 10 And if Christ be in you the body is dead because of sin but the Spirit is life because of righteousness 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies ‖ Or because of his Spirit by his Spirit that dwelleth in you 12 Therefore brethren we are debters not to
it be known what is spoken for ye shall speak into the air 10 There are it may be so many kinds of voices in the world and none of them is without signification 11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me 12 Even so ye forasmuch as ye are zealous †Gr. of spirits of spiritual gifts seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church 13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret 14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue my spirit prayeth but my understanding is unfruitful 15 What is it then I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the understanding also I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the understanding also 16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest 17 For thou verily givest thanks well but the other is not edified 18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more then you all 19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding that by my voice I might teach others also then ten thousand words in an unknown tongue 20 Brethren be not children in understanding howbeit in malice * Matth. 18.3 be ye children but in understanding be †Gr. perfect or of a ripe age men 21 In the law it is * Isa 28.11 written With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people and yet for all that will they not hear me saith the Lord. 22 Wherefore tongues are for a signe not to them that beleeve but to them that beleeve not but prophesying serveth not for them that beleeve not but for them which beleeve 23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place and all speak with tongues there come in those that are unlearned or unbeleevers will they not say that ye are mad 24 But if all prophesie and there come in one that beleeveth not or one unlearned he is convinced of all he is judged of all 25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest and so falling down on his face he will worship God and report that God is in you of a truth 26 How is it then brethren when ye come together every one of you hath a psalm hath a doctrine hath a tongue hath a revelation hath an interpretation Let all things be done to edifying 27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue let it be by two or at the most by three and that by course and let one interpret 28 But if there be no interpreter let him keep silence in the church and let him speak to himself and to God 29 Let the prophets speak two or three and let the other judge 30 If any thing be revealed to another that fitteth by let the first hold his peace 31 For ye may all prophesie one by one that all may learn and all may be comforted 32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets 33 For God is not the authour of †Gr. tumult or unquietness confusion but of peace as in all churches of the saints 34 * 1 Tim. 2.12 Let your women keep silence in the churches for it is not permitted unto them to speak but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the * Gen. 3.16 law 35 And if they will learn any thing let them ask their husbands at home for it is a shame for women to speak in the church 36 What came the word of God out from you or came it unto you onely 37 If any man think himself to be a prophet or spiritual let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. 38 But if any man be ignorant let him be ignorant 39 Wherefore brethren covet to prophesie and forbid not to speak with tongues 40 Let all things be done decently and in order CHAP. XV. 3 By Christs resurrection 12 he proveth the necessity of our resurrection against all such as deny the resurrection of the body 21 The fruit 35 and manner thereof 51 and of the changing of them that shall be found alive at the last day MOreover brethren I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you which also you have received and wherein ye stand 2 By which also ye are saved if ye ‖ Or bold fast keep in memory †Gr. by what speech what I preached unto you unless ye have beleeved in vain 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received how that Christ died for our sins * Isa 53.5 6 c. according to the scriptures 4 And that he was buried and that he rose again the third day * Psal 16.10 according to the scriptures 5 * John 20.19 And that he was seen of Cephas then of the twelve 6 After that he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once of whom the greater part remain unto this present but some are faln asleep 7 After that he was seen of James then of all the apostles 8 * Acts 9.4 Chap. 9.1 And last of all he was seen of me also as of ‖ Or an â—â—ortive one born out of due time 9 For I am the least of the apostles that am not meet to be called an apostle because I persecuted the church of God 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain but I laboured more abundantly then they all yet not I but the grace of God which was with me 11 Therefore whether it were I or they so we preach and so ye beleeved 12 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead 13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead then is Christ not risen 14 And if Christ be not risen then is our preaching vain and your faith is also vain 15 Yea and we are found false witnesses of God because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ whom he raised not up if so he that the dead rise not 16 For if the dead rise not then is not Christ raised 17 And if Christ be not raised your faith is vain ye are yet in your sins 18 Then they also which are faln asleep in Christ are perished 19 If in this life onely we have hope in Christ we are of all men most miserable 20 But now is Christ risen from the dead and become * Col. 1.28 Rev. 1.5 the first-fruits of them that slept 21 For since by man came death by man came also the
equal with God 7 But made himself of no reputation and took upon him the form of a servant and was made in the ‖ Or habit likeness of men 8 And being found in fashion as a man he humbled himself and became obedient unto death even the death of the cross 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow of things in heaven and things in earth and things under the earth 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Chist is Lord to the glory of God the Father 12 Wherefore my beloved as ye have always obeyed not as in my presence onely but now much more in my absence work out your own salvation with fear and trembling 13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure 14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings 15 That ye may be blameless and ‖ Or sincere harmless the sons of God without rebuke in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation among whom ‖ Or â—â—ine ye ye shine as lights in the world 16 Holding forth the word of life that I may rejoyce in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain neither laboured in vain 17 Yea and if I be †Gr. poured forth offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith I joy and rejoyce with you all 18 For the same cause also do ye joy and rejoyce with me 19 ‖ Or Moreover But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you that I also may be of good comfort when I know your state 20 For I have no man ‖ Or so dear unto me like-minded who will naturally care for your state 21 For all * 1 Cor. 10.24 seek their own not the things which are Jesus Christs 22 But ye know the proof of him that as a son with the Father he hath served with me in the gospel 23 Him therefore I hope to send presently so soon as I shall see how it will go with me 24 But I trust in the Lord that I also my self shall come shortly 25 Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus my brother and companion in labour and fellow-souldier but your messenger and he that ministred to my wants 26 For he longed after you all and was full of heaviness because that ye had heard that he had been sick 27 For indeed he was sick nigh unto death but God had mercy on him and not on him onely but on me also lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow 28 I sent him therefore the more carefully that when ye see him again ye may rejoyce and that I may be the less sorrowful 29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness and ‖ Or honour â—â—th hold such in reputation 30 Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death not regarding his life to supply your lack of service toward me CHAP. III. 1 He warneth them to beware of the false teachers of the circumcision 4 shewing that himself hath greater cause then they to trust in the righteousness of the law 7 which notwithstanding he counteth as dung loss to gain Christ and his righteousness 12 therein acknowledging his own imperfection 15 He exhorteth them to be thus minded 17 and to imitate him 18 and to decline the ways of carnal Christians FInally my brethren rejoyce in the Lord. To write the same things to you to me indeed is not grievous but for you it is safe 2 Beware of dogs beware of evil workers beware of the concision 3 For we are the circumcision which worship God in the spirit and rejoyce in Christ Jesus and have no confidence in the flesh 4 Though I might also have confidence in the flesh If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh I more 5 Circumcised the eighth day * 2 Cor. 11.22 of the stock of Israel of the tribe of Bâ—njamin an Hebrew of the Hebrews as touching the law * Act. 2â— 6 a Pharisee 6 Concerning zeal persecuting the church touching the righteousness which is in the law blameless 7 But what things were gain to me those I counted loss for Christ 8 Yea doubtless and I count all things bâ—t loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord for whom I have suffered the loss of all things do count them but dung that I may win Christ 9 And be found in him not having mine own righteousness which is of the law but that which is through the faith of Christ the righteousness which is of God by faith 10 That I may know him and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings being made conformable unto his death 11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead 12 Not as though I had already attained either were already perfect but I follow alter if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus 13 Brethren I count not my self to have apprehended but this one thing I do forgetting those things which are behinde and reaching forth unto those things which are before 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus 15 Let us therefore as many as be perfect be thus minded and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded God shall reveal even this unto you 16 Nevertheless whereto we have already attained let us walk by the same rule let us minde the same thing 17 Brethren be followers together of me and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample 18 For many walk of whom I have told you often and now tell you even weeping that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ 19 Whos 's end is destruction whose God is their belly and whose glory is in their shame who minde earthly things 20 For our conversation is in heaven from whence also we * 1 Cor. 1.7 Tit. 2.13 look for the Saviour the Lord Jesus Christ 21 Who shall change our vile body that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body according to the working whereby he is able even to sâ—bdue all things unto himself CHAP. IV. 1 From particular admonitions 4 he proceedeth to general exhortations 10 shewing how be rejoyced at their liberality towards him lying in prison not so much for the supply of his own wants as for the grace of God in them 19 and so he concludeth with prayer and salutations THerefore my brethren dearly beloved and longed for my joy and crown so stand fast in the Lord my dearly beloved 2 I beseech Euodias and beseech Syntyche that they be of the same minde in the Lord. 3 And I intreat thee also true yoke-fellow help those women which laboured
contended with him 3 Saying Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised and didst eat with them 4 But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning and expounded it by order unto them saying 5 I was in the city of Joppa praying and in a trance I saw a vision A certain vessel descend as it had been a great sheet let down from heaven by four corners and it came even to me 6 Upon the which when I had fastned mine eyes I considered and saw four-footed beasts of the earth and wilde beasts and creeping things and fowls of the air 7 And I heard a voice saying unto me Arise Peter slay and eat 8 But I said Not so Lord for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entred into my mouth 9 But the voice answered me again from heaven What God hath cleansed that call not thou common 10 And this was done three times and all were drawn up again into heaven 11 And behold immediately there were three men already come unto the house where I was sent from Cesarea unto me 12 And the Spirit bade me go with them nothing doubting Moreover these six brethren accompanied me we entred into the mans house 13 And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house which stood and said unto him Send men to Joppa and call for Simon whose surname is Peter 14 Who shall tell the words whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved 15 And as I began to speak the holy Ghost fell on them * Chap. 2.4 as on us at the beginning 16 Then remembred I the word of the Lord how that he said * John 1. 〈◊〉 John indeed baptized with water but ye shall be baptized with the holy Ghost 17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us who beleeved on the Lord Jesus Christ what was I that I could withstand God 18 When they heard these things they held their peace and glorified God saying Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life 19 ¶ * Chap. 8.17 Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice and Cyprus Antioch preaching the word to none but unto the Jews onely 20 And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene which when they were come to Antioch spake unto the Grecians preaching the Lord Jesus 21 And the hand of the Lord was with them and a great number beleeved and turned unto the Lord. 22 ¶ Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem and they sent forth Barnabas that he should go as far as Antioch 23 Who when he came and had seen the grace of God was glad and exhorted them all that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord. 24 For he was a good man and full of the holy Ghost and of faith and much people was added unto the Lord. 25 Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus for to seek Saul 26 And when he had found him he brought him unto Antioch And it came to pass that a whole year they assembled themselves ‖ Or. in the church with the church and taught much people and the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch 27 ¶ And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch 28 And there stood up one of them named Agabus and signified by the spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world which came to pass in the days of Claudius Cesar 29 Then the disciples every man according to his ability determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judea 30 Which also they did and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul CHAP. XII 1 King Herod persecuteth the christians killeth James and imprisoneth Peter whom an angel delivereth upon the prayers of the church 20 In his pride taking to himself the honour due to God he is stricken by an angel and dieth miserably 24 After his death the word of God prospereth NOw about that time Herod the king ‖ Or began stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church 2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword 3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews he proceeded further to take Peter also Then were the days of unleavened bread 4 And when he had apprehended him he put him in prison and delivered him to four quaternions of souldiers to keep him intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people 5 Peter therefore was kept in prison but ‖ Or instant and earnest prayer was made prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him 6 And when Herod would have brought him forth the same night Peter was sleeping between two souldiers bound with two chains and the keepers before the door kept the prison 7 And behold the angel of the Lord came upon him and a light shined in the prison and he smote Peter on the side and raised him up saying Arise up quickly And his chains fell off from his hands 8 And the angel said unto him Gird thy self and binde on thy sandals And so he did And he saith unto him Cast thy garment about thee and follow me 9 And he went out and followed him and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel but thought he saw a vision 10 When they were past the first and the second ward they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city which opened to them of his own accord and they went out and passed on through one street and forthwith the angel departed from him 11 And when Peter was come to himself he said Now I know of a surety that the Lord hath sent his angel and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews 12 And when he had considered the thing he came to the house of Mary the Mother of John whose surname was Mark where many were gathered together praying 13 And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate a damsel came ‖ Or to ask who was there to hearken named Rhoda 14 And when she knew Peters voice she opened not the gate for gladness but ran in and told how Peter stood before the gate 15 And they said unto her Thou art mad But she constantly affirmed that it was even so Then said they It is his angel 16 But Peter continued knocking and when they had opened the door and saw him they were astonished 17 But he beckning unto them with the hand to hold their peace declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison And he said Go shew these things unto James and to the brethren And he departed and went into another place 18 Now assoon as it was day there was no small stir among the souldiers what was become of
Peter 19 And when Herod had sought for him and found him not he examined the keepers and commanded that they should be put to death And he went down from Judea to Cesarea and there abode 20 ¶ And Herod ‖ Or hare an hostile minde intending war was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon but they came with one accord to him and having made Blastus †Gr. that was over the kings bed-chamber the kings chamberlain their friend desired peace because their countrey was nourished by the kings countrey 21 And upon a set day Herod arayed in royal apparel sat upon his throne and made an oration unto them 22 And the people gave a shout saying It is the voice of a god and not of a man 23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him because he gave not God the glory he was eaten of worms gave up the ghost 24 ¶ But the word of God grew and multiplied 25 And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem when they had fulfilled their ‖ Or charge Chap. 11.29 30 ministery and took with them John whose surname was Mark. CHAP. XIII 1 Paul and Barnabas are chosen to go to the Gentiles 7 Of Sergius Paulus and Elimas the sorcerer 14 Paul preacheth at Antioch that Jesus is Christ 42 The Gentiles beleeve 45 but the Jews gainsay and blaspheme 46 where upon they turn to the Gentiles 48 As many as were ordained to life beleeved NOw there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers as Barnabas and Simeon that was called Niger and Lucius of Cyrene and Manaen ‖ Or Heâ—ods foster-â—rother which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch and Saul 2 As they ministred to the Lord and fasted the holy Ghost said Separate me Barnabas Saul for the work whereunto I have called them 3 And when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them they sent them away 4 ¶ So they being sent forth by the holy Ghost departed unto Seleucia and from thence they sailed to Cyprus 5 And when they were at Salamis they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews and they had also John to their minister 6 And when they had gone through the isle unto Paphos they â—ound a certain sorcerer a false prophet a Jew whose name was Bar-jesus 7 Which was with the deputy of the countrey Sergius Paulus a prudent man who called for Barnabas and Saul and desired to hear the word of God 8 But Elymas the sorcerer for so is his name by interpretation withstood them seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith 9 Then Saul who also is called Paul filled with the holy Ghost set his eyes on him 10 And said O full of all subtilty and all mischief thou childe of the devil thou enemy of all righteousness wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord 11 And now behold the hand of the Lord is upon thee and thou shalt be blinde not seeing the sun for a season And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand 12 Then the deputy when he saw what was done beleeved being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord. 13 Now when Paul and his company loosed from Paphos they came to Perga in Pamphylia and John departing from them returned to Jerusalem 14 ¶ But when they departed from Perga they came to Antioch in Phidia and went into the synagogue on the sabbath-day and sat down 15 And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them saying Ye men and brethren if ye have any word of exhortation for the people say on 16 Then Paul stood up and beckning with his hand said Men of Israel and ye that fear God give audience 17 The God of this people of Israel chose our fathers and exalted the yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain 29 And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him they took him down from the tree and laid him in a sepulchre 30 * Matth. 28.6 But God raised him from the dead 31 And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem who are his witnesse unto the people 32 And we declare unto you glad tidings how that the
