if_o i_o shall_v lay_v they_o open_v at_o large_a and_o by_o piecemeal_o each_o member_n have_v in_o it_o sufficient_a whereof_o to_o make_v a_o great_a book_n for_o as_o i_o have_v already_o declare_v the_o artificial_a woorkemanship_n of_o man_n body_n be_v incredible_a and_o incomprehensible_a if_o a_o man_n consider_v all_o the_o part_n of_o it_o for_o there_o be_v nothing_o be_v it_o never_o so_o small_a but_o the_o work_n of_o it_o be_v very_o marvelous_a the_o use_n great_a and_o so_o fit_v to_o the_o purpose_n as_o can_v possible_o be_v better_a but_o we_o need_v not_o discourse_v more_o particular_o of_o the_o composition_n and_o nature_n of_o man_n body_n and_o of_o the_o part_n of_o it_o divine_a see_v our_o intent_n be_v not_o to_o become_v physician_n but_o in_o some_o sort_n natural_a divine_n by_o learning_n to_o know_v the_o providence_n of_o god_n in_o he_o work_v especial_o in_o our_o creation_n composition_n nourishment_n and_o preservation_n of_o they_o according_a as_o natural_o they_o be_v and_o aught_o to_o be_v without_o corruption_n and_o such_o as_o be_v necessary_a for_o the_o life_n of_o man_n but_o forasmuch_o as_o they_o be_v of_o great_a virtue_n and_o power_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o affection_n and_o manner_n of_o man_n whether_o they_o abide_v in_o their_o right_a nature_n or_o whether_o they_o be_v corrupt_v we_o must_v speak_v somewhat_o of_o their_o corruption_n and_o of_o the_o hurt_n that_o come_v thereby_o not_o only_o to_o the_o health_n and_o life_n of_o the_o body_n but_o also_o to_o that_o of_o the_o more_o violent_a death_n be_v procure_v then_o natural_a by_o reason_n of_o the_o defect_n and_o excess_n bring_v in_o by_o sin_n into_o the_o whole_a life_n of_o man_n cause_v man_n to_o speak_v diverse_o of_o the_o four_o humour_n of_o the_o body_n necessary_a for_o the_o preservation_n and_o nourishment_n thereof_o for_o they_o be_v more_o often_o take_v for_o the_o vice_n and_o excess_n whereby_o they_o be_v corrupt_v then_o for_o the_o true_a natural_a humour_n which_o be_v the_o chief_a instrument_n of_o the_o soul_n whereby_o it_o give_v life_n and_o nourishment_n to_o the_o body_n part_n the_o cause_n whereof_o as_o i_o think_v be_v because_o man_n do_v soon_o and_o more_o easy_o perceive_v and_o mark_v what_o be_v evil_a and_o hurtful_a unto_o they_o then_o that_o when_o we_o have_v it_o i_o mean_v that_o we_o shall_v learn_v this_o by_o the_o evil_a that_o succeed_v after_o we_o have_v lose_v the_o good_a ingratitude_n for_o we_o be_v such_o scholar_n as_o these_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v discourse_v of_o according_a to_o that_o manner_n of_o teach_v of_o the_o ancient_a academic_n teach_v which_o we_o follow_v in_o our_o first_o meeting_n namely_o upon_o the_o theme_n propound_v unto_o we_o to_o balance_v the_o argument_n on_o the_o one_o part_n with_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o other_o side_n that_o so_o we_o may_v diligent_o search_v out_o the_o truth_n notwithstanding_o it_o shall_v be_v lawful_a for_o we_o to_o deliver_v our_o opinion_n so_o long_o as_o we_o ground_n it_o upon_o the_o infallible_a testimony_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n any_o mention_n thereof_o but_o the_o sense_n care_v not_o but_o for_o this_o bodily_a life_n which_o the_o spirit_n contemn_v in_o regard_n of_o the_o other_o whereby_o it_o appear_v that_o the_o death_n of_o the_o body_n do_v affect_v &_o touch_v it_o nothing_o at_o all_o but_o the_o body_n only_o and_o those_o thing_n that_o be_v join_v unto_o it_o as_o namely_o both_o the_o external_a and_o have_v think_v upon_o both_o find_v themselves_o less_o trouble_v a_o great_a deal_n because_o they_o be_v resolute_o persuade_v and_o assure_v of_o a_o better_a life_n moreover_o we_o find_v by_o settle_v quiet_a skilful_a innocent_a religious_a and_o fear_v god_n whereupon_o we_o may_v consider_v &_o learn_v which_o of_o these_o two_o judgement_n be_v more_o certain_a and_o true_a either_o that_o of_o a_o spirit_n that_o be_v trouble_v disease_a ignorant_a evil_a without_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o void_a of_o religion_n or_o that_o of_o a_o spirit_n which_o have_v all_o those_o certain_a that_o some_o man_n be_v of_o such_o a_o brutish_a nature_n that_o a_o man_n may_v well_o doubt_v whether_o they_o be_v man_n or_o no_o and_o whether_o they_o deserve_v not_o rather_o to_o other_o thing_n for_o when_o a_o man_n will_v have_v true_a knowledge_n of_o they_o he_o take_v not_o in_o each_o kind_n of_o they_o that_o which_o may_v be_v in_o some_o of_o the_o same_o kind_n less_o perfect_a and_o monstrous_a as_o if_o there_o be_v occasion_n to_o judge_v of_o the_o nature_n of_o
mother_n yet_o she_o shall_v be_v a_o very_a cruel_a mother_n if_o she_o have_v give_v long_o life_n to_o beast_n then_o to_o man_n &_o have_v not_o reserve_v a_o better_a &_o a_o long_o for_o they_o take_v from_o this_o natural_a desire_n which_o god_n have_v not_o give_v to_o man_n in_o vain_a as_o have_v be_v show_v unto_o we_o by_o good_a reason_n moreover_o he_o judge_v it_o great_a folly_n to_o keep_v body_n in_o hope_n that_o they_o shall_v live_v and_o rise_v again_o according_a to_o the_o vain_a promise_n of_o the_o philosopher_n democritus_n body_n who_o do_v not_o rise_v again_o himself_o but_o i_o marvel_v not_o if_o pliny_n speak_v so_o of_o the_o resurrection_n of_o body_n see_v he_o hold_v that_o opinion_n of_o the_o mortality_n of_o soul_n &_o see_v those_o philospher_n who_o maintain_v the_o immortality_n of_o soul_n do_v not_o so_o much_o as_o once_o dream_v of_o the_o resurrection_n of_o body_n except_o this_o democritus_n only_o at_o who_o i_o much_o more_o wonder_n then_o at_o all_o this_o which_o pliny_n write_v of_o the_o mortality_n of_o soul_n for_o it_o seem_v that_o democritus_n can_v not_o learn_v this_o of_o reason_n and_o of_o natural_a philosophy_n unless_o it_o be_v so_o that_o he_o build_v his_o doctrine_n upon_o the_o same_o foundation_n that_o he_o take_v from_o his_o mote_n concern_v the_o matter_n of_o which_o all_o thing_n be_v make_v for_o according_a to_o this_o opinion_n he_o teach_v that_o all_o the_o essence_n that_o ever_o be_v shall_v in_o time_n have_v their_o be_v again_o by_o the_o meeting_n together_o of_o those_o matter_n of_o which_o they_o have_v be_v compound_v sure_o a_o very_a fond_a opinion_n for_o a_o philosopher_n so_o that_o pliny_n may_v well_o derde_v it_o although_o the_o argument_n he_o bring_v into_o all_o thing_n for_o as_o sin_n be_v cause_n of_o that_o excess_n death_n which_o be_v in_o the_o quality_n of_o which_o our_o body_n be_v make_v and_o consequent_o of_o the_o disease_n of_o their_o body_n as_o indeed_o it_o be_v a_o doctrine_n that_o humane_a philosophy_n do_v not_o understand_v and_o as_o for_o the_o immortality_n of_o the_o soul_n albeit_o the_o best_a philosopher_n and_o most_o learned_a man_n among_o they_o be_v of_o that_o opinion_n which_o also_o be_v for_o the_o most_o part_n general_o receive_v of_o the_o people_n yet_o they_o be_v never_o so_o assure_v thereof_o but_o that_o still_o there_o remain_v some_o doubt_n in_o they_o because_o they_o have_v no_o certain_a knowledge_n of_o it_o but_o only_o so_o much_o as_o they_o can_v get_v by_o their_o natural_a light_n and_o humane_a philosophy_n therefore_o when_o such_o as_o excel_v other_o among_o they_o labour_v to_o comfort_v and_o strengthen_v man_n against_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n and_o will_v persuade_v they_o that_o there_o be_v no_o evil_a in_o it_o they_o use_v for_o their_o principal_a reason_n this_o disiunctive_a speech_n death_n say_v either_o man_n be_v whole_o extinguish_v by_o death_n or_o else_o some_o part_n of_o he_o remain_v afterward_o if_o he_o perish_v altogether_o so_o that_o nothing_o of_o he_o continue_v still_o than_o he_o feel_v no_o ill_a and_o so_o death_n hurt_v he_o not_o but_o deliver_v he_o from_o all_o those_o evil_n whereunto_o he_o be_v necessary_o subject_a in_o this_o life_n but_o if_o some_o part_n of_o he_o abide_v still_o so_o that_o he_o die_v not_o altogether_o then_o be_v death_n no_o death_n unto_o he_o or_o at_o leastwise_o it_o be_v not_o evil_a unto_o he_o see_v his_o principal_a part_n which_o be_v his_o soul_n be_v a_o great_a deal_n better_a to_o inquire_v of_o these_o thing_n to_o sobriety_n and_o to_o leave_v the_o resolution_n to_o god_n who_o know_v that_o which_o be_v hide_v from_o we_o then_o by_o vain_a question_n and_o curious_a disputation_n to_o think_v to_o determine_v of_o the_o matter_n according_a to_o truth_n and_o to_o the_o contentation_n of_o every_o one_o for_o as_o we_o have_v before_o touch_v we_o can_v know_v nothing_o either_o of_o the_o generation_n or_o original_n or_o of_o the_o substance_n and_o nature_n of_o our_o soul_n or_o of_o the_o immortality_n thereof_o but_o only_o by_o those_o testimony_n which_o by_o the_o effect_n it_o aftoord_v unto_o we_o and_o which_o god_n set_v down_o in_o his_o word_n wherefore_o according_a to_o that_o which_o have_v be_v already_o handle_v we_o must_v distinguish_v those_o thing_n unto_o which_o our_o mind_n may_v in_o some_o sort_n reach_n and_o of_o which_o we_o may_v have_v some_o knowledge_n from_o they_o that_o be_v so_o hide_v from_o we_o that_o we_o can_v not_o know_v or_o judge_v of_o any_o thing_n but_o like_o blind_a man_n by_o grope_v and_o guess_v this_o be_v a_o matter_n then_o of_o which_o we_o must_v speak_v very_o sober_o after_o and_o with_o great_a reverence_n of_o god_n content_v ourselves_o with_o that_o which_o it_o please_v he_o to_o make_v know_v unto_o we_o by_o the_o mean_v aforesaid_a and_o go_v no_o further_o by_o desire_v to_o know_v that_o which_o we_o can_v not_o conceive_v or_o comprehend_v until_o such_o time_n as_o god_n himself_o shall_v give_v we_o more_o purity_n still_o neither_o can_v they_o be_v the_o soul_n of_o man_n and_o join_v unto_o their_o body_n and_o so_o become_v member_n of_o mankind_n in_o they_o with_o any_o other_o condition_n then_o with_o that_o into_o which_o the_o first_o father_n bring_v all_o his_o child_n by_o his_o sin_n as_o we_o have_v before_o touch_v wherefore_o we_o must_v not_o search_v for_o the_o cause_n of_o that_o original_a sin_n wherewith_o they_o be_v infect_v either_o in_o their_o creation_n because_o they_o be_v create_v by_o god_n of_o a_o divine_a and_o immortal_a essence_n or_o in_o the_o generation_n of_o the_o body_n and_o in_o that_o seed_n of_o which_o it_o be_v engender_v as_o if_o the_o soul_n take_v she_o original_n &_o infection_n together_o with_o the_o body_n from_o the_o corruption_n of_o the_o first_o stock_n and_o in_o that_o decree_n of_o god_n whereby_o he_o have_v condemn_v all_o mankind_n by_o his_o just_a judgement_n without_o any_o further_a enquiry_n after_o the_o mean_n and_o manner_n how_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v for_o this_o cause_n saint_n paul_n do_v bring_v we_o back_o to_o this_o consideration_n when_o in_o propound_v unto_o we_o the_o first_o the_o soul_n of_o beast_n of_o those_o power_n and_o virtue_n which_o be_v proper_a and_o peculiar_a to_o itself_o according_a to_o the_o philosopher_n of_o the_o difference_n and_o agreement_n that_o be_v between_o humane_a philosophy_n and_o christian_a doctrine_n touch_v these_o thing_n chap._n 87._o aram_n among_o the_o heathen_a they_o that_o be_v most_o ancient_a and_o near_o to_o the_o true_a church_n of_o god_n and_o converse_v most_o with_o his_o servant_n have_v great_a knowledge_n and_o better_a understanding_n of_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n of_o angel_n and_o of_o man_n soul_n and_o of_o other_o matter_n belong_v to_o true_a religion_n than_o they_o that_o be_v far_o off_o and_o succeed_v late_a after_o the_o other_o error_n for_o the_o far_o off_o that_o the_o doctrine_n of_o heavenly_a thing_n be_v draw_v from_o the_o fountain_n of_o it_o the_o more_o have_v it_o be_v alter_v and_o corrupt_v both_o by_o ignorance_n overwhelm_v it_o and_o by_o false_a understanding_n of_o it_o as_o also_o because_o every_o one_o have_v add_v to_o and_o take_v away_o what_o seem_v he_o best_o and_o that_o either_o to_o boast_v themselves_o that_o they_o may_v seem_v some_o body_n or_o to_o cover_v their_o theft_n that_o none_o may_v know_v from_o whence_o that_o thing_n be_v first_o take_v and_o borrow_v that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v think_v to_o be_v the_o first_o member_n thereof_o or_o last_o to_o please_v and_o satisfy_v the_o curiosity_n and_o vanity_n of_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n no_o marvel_v therefore_o if_o there_o be_v heathen_a philosopher_n among_o the_o ancient_n who_o believe_v and_o teach_v many_o thing_n agreeable_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o if_o there_o be_v now_o some_o among_o we_o who_o boast_v of_o their_o study_n in_o philosophy_n and_o yet_o have_v no_o part_n of_o that_o first_o innocence_n and_o purity_n but_o have_v their_o mind_n fill_v with_o strange_a opinion_n contrary_a to_o all_o reason_n and_o truth_n we_o see_v well_o enough_o by_o experience_n what_o impiety_n reign_v in_o this_o our_o age_n for_o there_o be_v a_o infinite_a number_n to_o be_v find_v of_o who_o religion_n no_o man_n can_v judge_v except_o give_v credit_n to_o they_o that_o maintain_v the_o immortality_n of_o soul_n which_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o so_o great_a consequence_n and_o weight_n spider_n and_o as_o spider_n turn_v into_o poison_n the_o sweet_a liquor_n they_o suck_v so_o they_o malicious_o gather_v the_o reason_n testimony_n and_o place_n not_o only_o of_o poet_n philosopher_n and_o other_o but_o also_o of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n which_o they_o think_v will_v serve_v to_o confirm_v they_o daily_o more_o and_o more_o in_o their_o error_n and_o in_o their_o false_a and_o wicked_a opinion_n how_o little_a likelihood_n soever_o they_o seem_v to_o have_v and_o how_o flender_o soever_o they_o make_v for_o they_o in_o the_o mean_a season_n they_o dissemble_v and_o make_v show_v that_o they_o see_v not_o all_o the_o other_o reason_n that_o fight_v direct_o against_o they_o which_o be_v in_o number_n infinite_a be_v so_o clear_a and_o so_o certain_a as_o nothing_o can_v be_v more_o there_o be_v many_o
