religion_n they_o must_v not_o account_v it_o but_o this_o custom_n spring_v up_o from_o the_o persuasion_n of_o popery_n which_o do_v not_o only_o account_v this_o kind_n of_o abstinence_n a_o meritorious_a work_n but_o also_o if_o man_n eat_v not_o flesh_n although_o they_o abound_v in_o all_o other_o delicate_n with_o great_a store_n of_o dainty_a wine_n and_o strong_a drink_n yet_o do_v they_o observe_v a_o druine_n fast_o to_o the_o lord_n although_o they_o never_o make_v any_o conscience_n of_o prayer_n and_o do_v not_o so_o much_o as_o bless_v their_o meat_n and_o drink_v they_o receive_v therefore_o let_v all_o good_a christian_n be_v careful_a to_o avoid_v in_o their_o fast_n ignorance_n and_o superstition_n and_o let_v they_o either_o join_v prayer_n with_o their_o fast_n or_o else_o never_o reckon_v it_o for_o a_o work_n of_o religion_n the_o reason_n of_o this_o doctrine_n be_v these_o first_o because_o god_n do_v not_o except_v we_o for_o meat_n 1._o cor._n 8._o 8._o that_o be_v with_o the_o 1._o lord_n if_o we_o eat_v or_o eat_v not_o we_o have_v neither_o the_o more_o or_o less_o and_o therefore_o bare_a abstinence_n be_v not_o any_o part_n of_o religion_n but_o if_o the_o ordinary_a take_n of_o our_o meat_n and_o drink_n must_v be_v sanctify_v by_o prayer_n which_o be_v a_o mere_a civil_a thing_n then_o much_o more_o the_o not_o receive_v either_o of_o meat_n and_o drink_v for_o a_o religious_a cause_n must_v be_v consecrate_v by_o prayer_n one_o say_v well_o that_o those_o which_o place_n any_o part_n of_o god_n his_o service_n in_o their_o meat_n they_o do_v very_o near_o make_v their_o belly_n their_o god_n yet_o though_o meat_n and_o drink_n do_v not_o make_v we_o either_o the_o better_o or_o the_o worse_a to_o god_n ward_n yet_o we_o must_v remember_v that_o hereby_o be_v not_o give_v we_o any_o liberty_n to_o live_v in_o gluttony_n or_o drunkenness_n no_o more_o then_o to_o starve_v and_o pine_v up_o our_o soul_n voluntary_o but_o he_o mean_v in_o the_o moderate_a use_n or_o neglect_v hereof_o another_o reason_n be_v 2_o because_o god_n never_o command_v any_o such_o fast_n nor_o allow_v it_o as_o we_o may_v see_v in_o all_o the_o course_n of_o the_o scripture_n where_o evermore_o there_o be_v join_v with_o fast_v public_a and_o most_o earnest_a prayer_n and_o lamentation_n why_o then_o shall_v we_o use_v that_o in_o the_o lord_n service_n which_o he_o never_o speak_v of_o and_o why_o shall_v we_o frame_v that_o of_o ourselves_o which_o he_o reprobate_v true_o every_o plant_n which_o he_o have_v not_o plant_v shall_v be_v pull_v up_o by_o the_o root_n and_o therefore_o in_o vain_a shall_v we_o worship_v he_o follow_v the_o tradition_n of_o man_n live_v in_o the_o obedience_n of_o the_o gospel_n for_o that_o shall_v bring_v we_o to_o life_n and_o whatsoever_o we_o do_v more_o we_o either_o perform_v for_o curiosity_n to_o find_v fault_n with_o that_o which_o be_v do_v or_o else_o for_o vanity_n to_o search_v into_o that_o which_o be_v forbid_v from_o hence_o let_v we_o learn_v to_o lead_v most_o christian_n live_v which_o 1_o be_v to_o serve_v the_o lord_n with_o fasting_n and_o prayer_n after_o the_o example_n of_o the_o ancient_a godly_a belove_a saint_n of_o god_n as_o anna_n luk._n 2._o 37._o and_o the_o apostle_n paul_n 2._o cor._n 11._o 27_o both_o man_n and_o woman_n have_v live_v in_o this_o kind_n of_o abstinence_n and_o religious_a service_n of_o god_n but_o alas_o we_o have_v among_o we_o thousand_o which_o will_v think_v they_o receive_v great_a injury_n if_o they_o be_v not_o account_v as_o good_a christian_n as_o paul_n and_o anna_n which_o never_o in_o all_o their_o life_n do_v so_o much_o as_o fast_o and_o pray_v one_o whole_a day_n together_o in_o their_o private_a house_n i_o can_v tell_v what_o nimbleness_n and_o joyfulness_n they_o find_v in_o themselves_o to_o the_o service_n of_o god_n but_o i_o be_o sure_a that_o there_o have_v be_v and_o now_o be_v other_o of_o another_o judgement_n which_o without_o this_o exercise_n of_o prayer_n and_o fast_v grow_v many_o time_n heavy_a and_o so_o dull_a in_o the_o practice_n of_o their_o profession_n that_o they_o think_v that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v depart_v from_o they_o and_o when_o they_o have_v renew_v this_o exercise_n they_o find_v themselves_o again_o more_o ripe_a and_o sharp_a and_o ready_a in_o any_o kind_n of_o goodness_n alas_o what_o practise_v of_o repentance_n be_v there_o in_o they_o that_o be_v stranger_n in_o this_o action_n it_o be_v a_o simple_a sorrow_n for_o sin_n that_o take_v not_o away_o one_o day_n stomach_n from_o meat_n and_o cause_v not_o the_o soul_n to_o hunger_n more_o after_o reconciliation_n then_o after_o a_o worldly_a recreation_n therefore_o fast_o often_o and_o pray_v much_o so_o shall_v thou_o be_v like_o the_o godly_a never_o be_v weary_a of_o this_o practice_n except_o thou_o be_v weary_a of_o christianity_n and_o as_o thy_o sin_n and_o the_o perfection_n of_o the_o church_n by_o holiness_n land_n be_v establish_v evil_a be_v banish_v king_n throne_n be_v maintain_v and_o it_o make_v a_o nation_n dwell_v without_o danger_n no_o may_v be_v charitable_a or_o to_o lust_n we_o may_v be_v chaste_a or_o to_o falsehood_n we_o may_v be_v true_a or_o to_o covetousness_n we_o may_v be_v liberal_a or_o ignorance_n of_o the_o scripture_n we_o may_v be_v learn_v in_o they_o and_o final_o if_o to_o any_o vain_a or_o unlawful_a thing_n we_o may_v no_o more_o desire_v it_o than_o child_n do_v the_o rod_n oh_o happy_a be_v we_o
