unto death or of obedience unto righteousness 17 But God be thanked that ye were the servants of sin but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine †Gr. whereto ye were delivered which was delivered you 18 Being then made free from sin ye became the servants of righteousness 19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh for as ye have yeelded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity even so now yeeld your members servants to righteousness unto holiness 20 For when ye were the servants of sin ye were free †Gr. to righteousness from righteousness 21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed for the end of those things is death 22 But now being made free from sin and become servants to God ye have your fruit unto holiness and the end everlasting life 23 For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. CHAP. VII 1 No law hath power over a man longer then he liveth 4 But we are dead to the law 7 Yet is not the law sin 12 but holy just good 16 as I acknowledge who am grieved because I cannot keep it KNow ye not brethren for I speak to them that know the law how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth 2 For * 1 Cor. 7.39 the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth but if the husband be dead she is loosed from the law of her husband 3 So then if while her husband liveth she be married to another man she shall be called an adulteress but if her husband be dead she is free from that law so that she is no adulteress though she be married to another man 4 Wherefore my brethren ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ that ye should be married to another even to him who is raised from the dead that we should bring forth fruit unto God 5 For when we were in the flesh the †Gr. passions motions of sins which were by the law did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death 6 But now we are delivered from the law ‖ Or being dead to that that being dead wherein we were held that we should serve in newness of spirit and not in the oldness of the letter 7 What shall we say then Is the law sin God forbid Nay I had not known sin but by the law for I had not known ‖ Or concupiscence lust except the law had said * Ex. 20.17 Deut. 5.21 Thou shalt not cover 8 But sin taking occasion by the commandment wrought in me all manner of concupiscence For without the law sin was dead 9 For I was alive without the law once but when the commandment came sin revived and I died 10 And the commandment which was ordained to life I found to be unto death 11 For sin taking occasion by the commandment deceived me and by it slew me 12 Wherefore the law is holy and the commandment holy and just and good 13 Was then that which is good made death unto me God forbid But sin that it might appear sin working death in me by that which is good that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful 14 For we know that the law is spiritual but I am carnal sold under sin 15 For that which I do I †Gr. know allow not for what I would that do I not but what I hate that do I. 16 If then I do that which I would not I consent unto the law that it is good 17 Now then it is no more I that do it but sin that dwelleth in me 18 For I know that in me that is in my flesh dwelleth no good thing for to will is present with me but how to perform that which is good I finde not 19 For the good that I would I do not but the evil which I would not that I do 20 Now if I do that I would not it is no more I that do it but sin that dwelleth in me 21 I finde then a law that when I would do good evil is present with me 22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man 23 But I see another law in my members warring against the law of my minde and bringing me into â—aptivity to the law of sin which is in my members 24 O wretched man that I am who shall deliver me from ‖ Or this body of death the body of this death 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the minde I my self serve the law of God but with the flesh the law of sin CHAP. VIII 1 They that are in Christ and live according to the Spirit are free from condemnation 5 13 What harm cometh of the flesh 6 14 and what good of the Spirit 17 and what of being Gods children 19 whose glorious deliverance all things long for 29 It was beforehand dâ—creed from God 38 What can sever us from his love THere is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death 3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and ‖ Or by a sacrifice for sin for sin condemned sin in the flesh 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit 5 For they that are after the flesh do minde the things of the flesh but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit 6 For †Gr. the minding of the flesh to be carnally minded is death but †Gr. the minding of the Spirit to be spiritually minded is life and peace 7 Because †Gr. the minding of the flesh the carnal minde is enmity against God for it is not subject to the law of God neither indeed can be 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God 9 But ye are not in the flesh but in the Spirit if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ he is none of his 10 And if Christ be in you the body is dead because of sin but the Spirit is life because of righteousness 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies ‖ Or because of his Spirit by his Spirit that dwelleth in you 12 Therefore brethren we are debters not to

XXXVIII 1 Honour due to the physician and why 16 How to weep and mourn for the deal 24 The wisdom of the learned man and of the labourer and artificer with the use of them both HOnour a physician with the honour due unto him for the uses which you may have of him for the Lord hath created him 2 For of the most High cometh healing and he shall receive ‖ Or a giâ—t honour of the king 3 The skill of the physician shall lift up his head and in the sight of great men he shall be in admiration 4 The Lord hath created medicines out of the earth and he that is wise will not abhor them 5 * Exod. â—5 25 Was not the water made sweet with wood that the vertue thereof might be known 6 And he hath given men skill that he might be honoured in his marvellous works 7 With such doth he heal men and taketh away their pains 8 Of such doth the apothecary make a confection and of his works there is no end and from him is peace over all the earth 9 My son in thy sickness be not negligent but * Isa 38.2 pray unto the Lord and he will make thee whole 10 Leave off from sin and order thy hands aright and cleanse thy heart from all wickedness 11 Give a sweet savour and a memorial of fine flour and make a fat offering ‖ Or as a deed man as not being 12 Then give place to the physician for the Lord hath created him let him not go from thee for thou hast need of him 13 There is a time when in their hands there is good success 14 For they shall also pray unto the Lord that he would prosper that which they give for ease and ‖ Or â—â—ring remedy to prolong life 15 He that sinneth before his maker let him fall into the hand of the physician 16 My son let tears fall down over the dead and begin to lament as it thou hadst suffered great harm thy self and then cover his body according to the custom and neglect not his burial 17 Weep bitterly and make great moan and use lamentation as he is worthy and that a day or two lest thou be evil-spoken of and then comfort thy self for thy heaviness 18 Foâ— of heaviness cometh death and the heaviness of the * Pro. 15.13 17.22 heart breaketh strength 19 In affliction also sorrow remaineth and the life of the poor is the curse of the heart 20 Take no heaviness to heart drive it away and remember the last end 21 Forget it not for there is no turning again thou shalt not do him good but hurt thy self 22 Remember ‖ Or the sentence upon him my judgement for thine also shall be so yesterday for me and to day for thee 23 * 2 Sam. 33.20 When the dead is at rest let his remembrance rest and be comforted for him when his spirit is departed from him 24 The wisdom of a learned man cometh by opportunity of leisure and he that hath little business shall become wise 25 How can he get wisdom that holdeth the plough and that glorieth in the goad that driveth oxen and is occupied in their labours and whose talk is †Gr. of the breed of bullocks of bullocks 26 He giveth his minde to make furrows and is diligent to give the kine â—odder 27 So every carpenter and work-master that laboureth night and day and they that cut and grave seals and are diligent to make great variety and give themselves to counterfeit imagery and watch to finish a work 28 The smith also sitting by the anvil and considering the iron work the vapour of the fire wasteth his flesh and he fighteth with the heat of the furnace the noise of the hammer and the anvil is ever in his ears and his eyes look still upon the pattern of the thing that he maketh he setteth his minde to finish his work and watcheth to polish it perfectly 29 So doth the potter sitting at his work and turning the wheel about with his feet who is alway carefully set at his work and maketh all his work by number 30 He fashioneth the clay with his arm and ‖ Or tempereth it with his feet boweth down his strength before his feet he applieth himself to lead it over and he is diligent to make clean the furnace 31 All these trust to their hands and every one is wise in his work 32 Without these cannot a city be inhabited and they shall not dwell where they will nor go up and down 33 They shall not be sought for in publick counsel nor sit high in the congregation they shall not sit on the judges seat nor understand the sentence of judgement they cannot declare justice and judgement and they shall not be found where parables are spoken 34 But they will maintain the state of the world and all their desire is in the work of their craft CHAP. XXXIX 1 A description of him that is truth wise 12 An exhortation to praise God for his works which are good to the good and evil to them that are evil BUt he that giveth his minde to the law of the most High and is occupied in the meditation thereof will seek out the wisdom of all the ancient and be occupied in prophecies 2 He will keep the sayings of the renowned men and where subtil parables are he will be there also 3 He will seek out the secrets of grave sentences and be conversant in dark parables 4 He shall serve among great men and appear before

V. 1 Being justified by faith we have peace with God 2 and joy in our hope 8 that sith we were reconciled by his bloud when we were enemies 10 we shall much more be saved being reconciled 12 As sin and death came by Adam 17 so much more righteousness and life by Jesus Christ 20 Where sin abounded grace did superabound THerefore being justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ 2 * Eph. 2.18 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand and rejoyce in hope of the glory of God 3 And not onely so but we glory in tribulations also * James 1.3 knowing that tribulation worketh patience 4 And patience experience and experience hope 5 And hope maketh not ashamed because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the holy Ghost which is given unto us 6 For when we were yet without strength ‖ Or according to the time in due time Christ died for the ungodly 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die 8 But God commendeth his love towards us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us 9 Muâ—h more then being now justified by his bloud we shall be saved from wrath through him 10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son much more being reconciled we shall be saved by his life 11 And not onely so but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ by whom we have now received the atonement 12 Wherefore as by one man sin entred into the world and death by sin and so death passed upon all men ‖ Or in whom for that all have sinned 13 For until the saw sin was in the world but sin is not imputed when there is no law 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adams transgression who is the figure of him that was to come 15 But not as the offence so also is the free gift For if through the offence of one many be dead much more the grace of God and the gift by grace which is by one man Jesus Christ hath abounded unto many 16 And not as it was by one that sinned so is the gift for the judgement was by one to condemnation but the free gift is of many offences unto justification 17 For if ‖ Or by one offence by one mans offence death reigned by one much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one Jesus Christ 18 Therefore as ‖ Or by one offence by the offence of one judgement came upon all men to condemnation even so ‖ Or by one righteousness by the rigiteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life 19 For as by one mans disobedience many were made sinners so by the obedience of one shall many he made righteous 20 Moreover the law entred that the offence might abound But where sin abounded grace did much more abound 21 That as sin hath reigned unto death even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord. CHAP. VI. 1 We may not live in sin 2 for we are dead unto it 3 as appeareth by our baptism 12 Let not sin reign any more 18 because we have yeelded our selves to the service of righteousness 23 and for that death is the wages of sin WHat shall we say then Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound 2 God forbid how shall we that are dead to sin live any longer therein 3 Know ye not that * Gal. 3.27 so many of us as ‖ Or art were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death 4 Therefore we are * Col. 2.12 buried with him by baptism into death that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father even so we also should walk in newness of life 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection 6 Knowing this that our old man is crucified with him that the body of sin might be destroyed that henceforth we should not serve sin 7 For he that is dead is †Gr. justified freed from sin 8 Now if we be dead with Christ we beleeve that we shall also live with him 9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more death hath no more dominion over him 10 For in that he died he died unto sin once but in that he liveth he liveth unto God 11 Likewise reckon ye also your selves to be dead indeed unto sin but a live unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof 13 Neither yeeld ye your members as †Gr. arms or weapons instruments of unrighteousness unto sin but yeeld your selves unto God as those that are a live from the dead and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you for ye are not under the law but under grace 15 What then shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace God forbid 16 Know ye not that * Joh. 8.34 2 Pet. 2.19 to whom ye yeeld your selves servants to obey his servants ye are to whom ye obey whether of sin

JUDE He exhorteth them to be constant in the profession of the faith 14 False teachers are crept in to seduce them for whose damnable doctrine and manners horrible punishment is prepared 20 whereas the godly by the assistance of the holy Spirit and prayers to God may persevere and grow in grace and keep themselves and recover others out of the snares of those deceivers JUde the servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James to them that are sanctified by God the Father and preserved in Jesus Christ and called 2 Mercy unto you and peace and love be multiplied 3 Beloved when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation it was needful for me to write unto you and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints 4 For there are certain men crept in unawares who were before of old ordained to this condemnation ungodly men turning the grace of our God

mine eyes 9 But hast done evil above all that were before thee for thou hast gone and made thee other gods and molten images to provoke me to anger and hast cast me behinde thy back 10 Therefore up a king over Israel who shall cut off the house of Jeroboam that day but what even now 15 For the LORD shall smite Israel as a reed is shaken in the water and he shall root up Israel out of this good land which he gave to their fathers and shall scatter them beyond the river because they have made their groves provoking the LORD to anger 16 And he shall give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam who did sin and who made Israel to sin 17 ¶ And Jeroboams wife arose and departed and came to Tirzah and when she came to the threshold of the door the childe died 18 And they buried him and all Israel mourned for him according to the word of the LORD which he spake by the hand of his servant Ahijah the prophet 19 And the rest of the acts of Jeroboam how he warred and how he reigned Jerusalem the city which the LORD did choose out of all the tribes of Israel to put his name there and his mothers name was Naamah an Ammonitess 22 And Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD and they provoked him to jealousie with their sins which they had committed above all that their fathers had done 23 For they also built them high places and ‖ Or standing images or statues images and groves on every high hill and under every green tree 24 And there were also sodomites in the land and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the LORD cast out before the children of Israel 25 ¶ And it came to pass in the fifth year of king Rehoboam that Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem 26 And he took away the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of XV. 1 Azariah his good reign 5 He dying a leper Jotham succeedeth 8 Zachariah the last of Jehu his generation reigning ill is slain by Shallum 13 Shallum reigning a moneth is slain by Menahem 16 Menahem strengthneth himself by Pul. 21 Pekahiah succeedeth him 23 Pekahiah is slain by Pekah 27 Pekah is oppressed by Tiglath-pileser and slain by Hoshea 32 Jothams good reign 36 Ahaz succeedeth him IN the twenty and seventh year of Jeroboam king of Israel began Azariah son of Amaziah king of Judah to reign 2 Sixteen years old was he when he began to reign and he reigned two and fifty years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Jecholiah of Jerusalem 3 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD according to all that his father Amaziah had done 4 Save that the high places were not removed the people sacrificed and burnt incense still on the high places 5 ¶ And the LORD smote the king so that he was a leper unto the day of his death and dwelt in a several house and Jotham the kings son was over the house judging the people of the land 6 And the rest of the acts of Azariah and all that he did are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 7 So Azariah slept with his fathers and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David and Jotham his son reigned in his stead 8 ¶ In the thirty and eighth year of Azariah king of Judah did Zachariah the son of Jeroboam reign over Israel in Samaria six moneths 9 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD as his fathers had done he departed not from the fins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat Who made Israel to sin 10 And Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired

X. 1 Sauls overthrow and death 8 The Philistines triumph over Saul 11 The kindness of Jabesh-gilead toward Saul and his sons 13 Sauls sin for which the kingdom was translated from him to David NOw * 1 Sam. 31.1 2. the Philistines fought against Israel and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines and fell down ‖ Or wounded slain in mount Gilboa 2 And the Philistines followed hard after Saul and after his sons and the Philistines slew Jonathan and ‖ Or Ishui 1 Sam. 14.40 Abinadab and Malchi-shua the sons of Saul 3 And the battel went sore against Saul and the †Heb. shooters with bowes archers †Heb. found him hit him and he was wounded of the archers 4 Then said Saul to his armour-bearer Draw thy sword and thrust me through therewith lest these uncircumcised come and ‖ Or â—hook me abuse me But his armour-bearer would not for he was sore afraid So Saul took a sword and fell upon it 5 And when his armour-bearer saw that Saul was dead he fell likewise on the sword and died 6 So Saul died and his three sons and all his house died together 7 And when all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw that they fled and that Saul and his sons were dead then they forsook their cities and fled and the Philistines came and dwelt in them 8 ¶ And it came to pass on the morrow when the Philistines came to strip the slain that they found Saul his sons faln in mount Gilboa 9 And when they had stripped him they took his head and his armour and sent into the land of the Philistines round about to carry tidings unto their idols and to the people 10 And they put his
rosteth not that which he took in hunting but the substance of a diligent man is precious 28 In the way of righteousness is life and in the path-way thereof there is no death CHAP. XIII A Wise son heareth his fathers instruction but a scorner heareth not rebuke 2 * Chap. 12.14 A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth but the soul of the transgressours shall eat violence 3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction 4 The soul of the sluggard desireth and hath nothing but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat 5 A righteous man hateth lying but a wicked man is loathsom and cometh to shame 6 * Chap. 11.3 5 6. XX. 1 Pashur smiting Jeremiah receiveth a new name and a fearful doom 7 Jeremiah complaineth of contempt 10 of treachery 14 and of his birth NOw Pashur the son of * 1 Chr. 24.14 Immer the priest who was also chief governour in the house of the LORD heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things 2 Then Pashur smote Jeremiah the prophet and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin which was by the house of the LORD 3 And it came to pass on the morrow that Pashur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks Then said Jeremiah unto him The LORD hath not called thy name Pashur but ‖ That is Fear

XII 1 Jerusalem a cup of trembling to her self 3 and a burdensom stone to her adversaries 6 The victorious restoring of Judah 9 The repentance of Jerusalem THe burden of the word of the LORD for Israel saith the LORD which stretcheth forth the heavens and layeth the foundation of the earth and formeth the spirit of man within him 2 Behold I will make Jerusalem a cup of ‖ Or stumber or poison trembling unto all the people round about ‖ Or and also against Judah shall he be which shall be in siege against Jerusalem when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem 3 ¶ And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensom stone for all people all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it 4 In that day saith the LORD I will smite every horse with astonishment and his rider with madness and I will open mine eyes upon the house of Judah and will smite every horse of the people with blindness 5 And the governours of Judah shall say in their heart ‖ Or There is strength to me and to the inhabitants c. The inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be my strength in the LORD of hosts their God 6 ¶ In that day will I make the governours of Judah like a hearth of fire among the wood and like a torch of fire in a sheaf and they shall devour all the people round about on the right hand and on the left and Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place even in Jerusalem 7 The LORD also shall save the tents of Judah first that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem do not magnifie themselves against Judah 8 In that day shall the LORD defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem and he that is ‖ Or object †Heb. faln feeble among them at that day shall be as David and the house of David shall be as God as the angel of the LORD before them 9 ¶ And it shall come to pass in that day that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem 10 And I will pour upon the house of David and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem the spirit of grace and of supplications and they shall * Joh. 19.24 37. XIII 1 The fountain of purgation for Jerusalem 2 from idolatry and false prophesie 7 The death of Christ and the trial of a third part IN that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for †Heb. separation for uncleanness uncleanness 2 ¶ And it shall come to pass in that day saith the LORD of hosts that I will * Ezek. 30.13 cut off the names of the idols out of the land and they shall no more be remembred and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land 3 And it shall come to pass that when any shall yet prophesie then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him Thou shalt not live for thou speakest lies in the name of the LORD and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth 4 And it shall come to pass in that day that the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision when he hath prophesied neither shall they wear †Heb. a garment of hair a rough garment †Heb. to lie to deceive 5 But he shall say I am no prophet I am an husbandman for man taught me to keep cattel from my youth 6 And one shall say unto him What are these wounds in thine hands Then he shall answer Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends 7 ¶ Awake O sword against my shepherd and against the man that is my fellow saith the LORD of hosts * Matth. 26.31 Mar. 14.27 smite the shepherd and the sheep shall be scattered and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones 8 And it shall come to pass that in all the land saith the LORD two parts therein shall be cut off and die but the third shall be left therein 9 And I will bring the third part through the fire and will * 1 Pet. 1 6 7. refine them as silver is refined and will try them as gold is tried they shall call on my name and I will hear them I will say It is my people and they shall say The LORD is my God CHAP. XIV 1 The destroyers of Jerusalem destroyed 4 The coming of Christ and the graces of his kingdom 12 The plague of Jerusalems enemies 16 The remnant shall turn to the Lord 20 and their spoils shall be holy BEhold the day of the LORD cometh and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee 2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battel and the city shall be taken and the houses rifled and the women ravished and half of the city shall go forth into captivity and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city 3 Then shall the
utterly ‖ Or abolished rooted out 11 Who then should make more mourning then she that hath lost so great a multitude and not thou which art sorry but for one 12 But if thou sayest unto me My lamentation is not like the earths because I have lost the fruit of my womb which I brought forth with pains and bare with sorrows 13 ‖ But the earth after the manner of the earth whereinto the present multitude is gone again as it came out But the earth not so for the multitude present in it according to the course of the earth is gone as it came 14 Then say I unto thee Like as thou hast brought forth with labour even so the earth also hath given her fruit namely man ever since the beginning unto him that made her 15 Now therefore keep thy sorrow to thy self and bear with a good courage that which hath be faln thee 16 For it thou shalt acknowledge the determination of God to be just thou shalt both receive thy son in time and shalt be commended amongst women 17 Go thy way then into the city to thine husband 18 And she said unto me That will I not do I will not go into the city but here will I die 19 So I proceeded to speak further unto her and said 20 Do not so but be counselled by me for how many are the adversities of Sion be comforted in regard of the sorrow of Jerusalem 21 For thou seest that our sanctuary is said waste our altar broken down our temple destroyed 22 Our psaltery is laid on the ground our song is put to silence our rejoycing is at an end the light of our candlestick is put out the ark of our covenant is spoiled our holy things are defiled and the name that is called upon us is almost profaned our children are put to shame our priests are burnt our Levites are gone into captivity our virgins are defiled and our wives ravished our righteous men carried away our little ones destroyed our young men are brought in bondage and our strong men are become weak 23 And which is the greatest of all the seal of Sion hath now lost her honour for she is delivered into the hands of them that hate us 24 And therefore shake off thy great heaviness and put away the multitude of sorrows that the Mighty may be merciful unto thee again and the Highest shall give thee rest and ease from thy labour 25 And it came to pass while I was talking with her behold her face upon a sudden shined exceedingly and her countenance glistered so that I was afraid of her and mused what it might be 26 And behold suddenly she made a great cry very fearful so that the earth shook at the noise of the woman 27 And I looked and behold the woman appeared unto me no more but there was a city builded and a large place shewed it self from the foundations then was I afraid and cried with a loud voice and said 28 Where is * Ch. 4.1 Uriel the angel who came Highest will reveal many secret things unto thee 39 He hath seen that thy ‖ Or purpose way is right for that thou sorrowest continually for thy people and makest great lamentation for Sion 40 This therefore is the meaning of the vision which thou lately sawest 41 Thou sawest a woman mourning and thou beganst to comfort her 42 But now seest thou the likeness of the woman no more but there appeared unto thee a city builded 43 And whereas she told thee of the death of her son this is the ‖ Or interpretation solution 44 This woman whom thou sawest is Sion and whereas she said unto thee even she whom thou seest as a city builded 45 Whereas I say she said unto thee that she hath been thirty years barren those are the thirty years wherein there was no offering made in her 46 But after because she mourned for her son thou beganst to comfort her and of these things which have chanced these are to be opened unto thee 50 For now the most High seeth that thou art grieved unfeignedly and sufferest from thy whole heart for her so hath he shewed thee the brightness of her glory and the comeliness of her beauty 51 And therefore I bade thee remain in the field where no house was builded 52 For I knew that the Highest would shew this unto thee 53 Therefore I commanded thee to go into the field where no foundation of any building was 54 For in the place wherein the Highest beginneth to shew his city there can no mans building be able to stand 55 And therefore sear not let not thine heart he affrighted but go thy way in and see the beauty and greatness of the building as much as thine eyes be able to see 56 And then shalt thou hear as much as thine ears may comprehend 57 For thou art blessed above many other and ‖ Or at called to be with c. art called with the Highest and so VIII 1 The state and behaviour of Judith a widow 12 She blameth the governours for their promise to yeeld 17 and adviseth them to trust in God 28 They excuse their promise 32 She promiseth to do something for them NOw at that time Judith heard thereof which was the daughter of Merari the son of Ox the son of Joseph the son of Oziel the son of Elcia the son of Ananias the son of Gedeon the son of Raphaim the son of Acitho the son of Eliu the son of Eliab the son of Nathanael the son of ‖ Or Samaâ—iel Samael the son of Salasadal the son of Israel 2 And Manasses was her husband of her tribe and kindred who died in the barley-harvest 3 For as he stood overseeing them that bound sheaves in the field the heat came upon his head and he fell on his bed and died in the city of Bethulia and they buried him with his fathers in the field between Dothaim and Balamo 4 So Judith was a widow in her house three years and four moneths 5 And she made her a tent upon the top of her house and put on sackcloth upon her loyns and ware her widows apparel 6 And she fasted all the days of her widowhood save the eves of the sabbaths and the sabbaths and the eves of the new-moons and the new-moons the Assyrians after five days 10 Then she sent her waiting-woman that had the government of all things that she had to call Ozias and Chabris and Charmis the ancients of the city 11 And they came unto her and she said unto them Hear me now O ye governours of the inhabitants of Bethulia for your words that you have spoken before the people this day are not right touching this oath which ye made and pronounced between God and you and have promised to deliver the city to our enemies unless within these days the Lord turn to help you 12 And now who are you that have tempted God this day and stand in stead of God amongst the children of men 13 And now try the Lord Almighty but you shall never know any thing 14 For you cannot finde the depth of the heart of man neither can ye perceive the things that he thinketh then how can you search out God that hath made all these things and know his minde or comprehend his purpose Nay my brethren provoke not the Lord our God to anger 15 For if he will not help us within these five days he hath power to defend us when he will even every day or to destroy us before our enemies 16 Do not ‖ Or enzaze binde the counsels of the Lord our God for * Num. 23.19 God is not as man that he may be threatned neither is he as the son of man that he should be wavering 17 Therefore let us wait for salvation of him and call upon him to help us and he will hear our voice if it please him 18 For there arose none in our age neither is there any now in these days neither tribe nor family nor ‖ Or town people nor city among us which worship gods made with hands * Judâ— 2.11 and 4 1 and 6.1 as hath been aforetime 19 For the which cause our fathers were given to the sword and for a spoil and had a great fall before our enemies 20 But we know none other God therefore we trust that he will not despise us nor any of our nation 21 For if we be taken so all Judea shall lie waste and our sanctuary shall be spoiled he will require the profanation thereof at our mouth 22 And the ‖ Or fear slaughter of our brethren and the captivity of the countrey and the desolation of our inheritance will he turn upon our heads among the Gentiles wheresoever we shall be in bondage and we shall be an offence and a reproach to all them that possess us 23 For our servitude shall not be directed to favour but the Lord our God shall turn it to dishonour 24 Now therefore O brethren let us shew an example to our brethren because their hearts depend upon us and the sanctuary and the house and the altar rest upon us 25 Moreover let us give thanks to the Lord our God which trieth us even as he did our fathers 26 Remember what things he did to * Gen. 22.1 Abraham and how he tried Isaac and what hapned to * Gen. 28.7 Jacob in Mesopotamia of Syria when he kept the sheep of Laban his mothers brother 27 For he hath not tried us in the fire as he did them for the examination of their hearts neither hath he taken vengeance on us but the Lord doth scourge them that come near unto him to admonish them 28 Then said Ozias to her All that thou hast spoken hast thou spoken with a good heart and there is none that may gainsay thy words 29 For this is not the first day wherein thy wisdom is manifested but from the beginning of thy days all the people have known thy understanding because the disposition of thine heart is good 30
they shall be given you to be consumed 13 And I am coming before Holofernes the chief captain of your army to declare words of truth and I will shew him a way whereby he shall go and win all the hill-countrey without losing the body or life of any one of his men 14 Now when the men heard her words and beheld her countenance they wondred greatly at her beauty and said unto her 15 Thou hast saved thy life in that thou hast hasted to come down to the presence of our lord now therefore come to his tent and some of us shall conduct thee until they have delivered thee to his hands 16 And when thou standest before him be not afraid in thine heart but shew unto him according to thy word and he will entreat thee well 17 Then they chose out of them an hundred men ‖ Or and they prepared a â—hariet for her to accompany her and her maid and they brought her to the tent of Holofernes 18 Then was there a concourse throughout all the camp for her coming was noised among the tents and they came about her as she stood without the tent of Holofernes till they told him of her 19 And they wondred at her beauty and admired the children of Israel because of her and every one said to his neighbour Who would despise this people that have among them such women surely it is not good that one man of them be left who being let go might deceive the whole earth 20 And they that lay near Holofernes went out and all his servants and they brought her into the tent 21 Now Holofernes rested upon his bed under a canopie which was woven with purple and gold and emeralds and precious stones 22 So they shewed him of her and he came out before his tent with silver lamps going before him 23 And when Judith was come before him and his servants they all marvelled at the beauty of her countenance and she fell down upon her face and did reverence unto him and his servants took her up CHAP. XI 3 Holofernes asketh Judith the cause of her coming 6 She telleth him how and when he may prevail 20 He is much pleased with her wisdom and beauty THen said Holofernes unto her Woman be of good comfort fear not in thine heart for I never hurt any that was willing to serve Nabuchodonosor the king of all the earth 2 Now therefore if thy people that dwelleth in the mountains had not set light by me I would not have lifted up my spear against them but they have done these things to themselves 3 But now tell me wherefore thou art fled from them and art come unto us for thou art come for safeguard be of good comfort thou shalt live this night and hereafter 4 For none shall hurt thee but entreat thee well as they do the servants of king Nabuchodonosor my lord 5 Then Judith said unto him Receive the words of thy servant and suffer thine hand-maid to speak in thy presence and I will declare no lie to my lord this night 6 And if thou wilt follow the words of thine hand-maid God will bring the thing perfectly to pass by thee and my lord shall not fail of his purposes 7 As Nabuchodonosor king of all the earth liveth and as his power liveth who hath sent thee for the upholding of every living thing for not onely men shall serve him by thee but also the beasts of the field and the cattle and the fowls of the air shall live by thy power under Nabuchodonosor and all his house 8 For we have heard of thy wisdom and thy policies and it is reported in all the earth that thou onely art ‖ Or in savour excellent in all the kingdom and mighty in knowledge and wonderful in feats of war 9 Now as concerning the matter which Achior did speak in thy council we have heard his words for the men of Bethulia ‖ Or gat him saved him and he declared unto them all that he had spoken unto thee 10 Therefore O lord and governour reject not his word but lay it up in thine heart for it is true for our nation shall not be punished neither can the sword prevail against them except they sin against their God 11 And now that my lord be not defeated and frustrate of his purpose even death is now faln upon them and their sin hath overtaken them wherewith they will provoke their God to anger whensoever they shall do that which is not fit to be done 12 For their victuals fail them and all their water is scant and they have determined to lay hands upon their cattel and purposed to consume all those things that God hath forbidden them to eat by his laws 13 And are resolved to spend the first-fruits of the corn and the tenths of wine and oyl which they had sanctified and reserved for the priests that serve in Jerusalem before the â—ace of our God the which things it is not lawful for any of the people so much as to touch with their hands 14 For they have sent some to Jerusalem because they also that dwell there have done the like to bring them a license from the senate 15 Now when they shall bring them word they will forthwith do it and they shall be given thee to be destroyed the same day 16 Wherefore I thine hand-maid knowing all this am fled from their presence and God hath sent me to work things with thee whereat all the earth shall be astonished and whosoever shall hear it 17 For thy servant is religious and serveth the God of heaven day and night now therefore my lord I will remain with thee and thy servant will go out by night into the valley and I will pray unto God and he will tell me when they have committed their sins 18 And I will come and shew it unto thee then thou shalt go forth with all thine army and there shall be none of them that shall resist thee 19 And I will lead thee through the midst of Judea until thou come before Jerusalem and I will set thy throne in the midst thereof and thou shalt drive them as sheep that have no shepherd and a dog shall not so much as ‖ Or. bark open his mouth at thee for ‖ Or. these things have I spoken these things were told me according to my foreknowledge and they were declared unto me and I am sent to tell thee 20 Then her words pleased Holofernes and all his servants and they marvelled at her wisdom and said 21 There is not such a woman from one end of the earth to the other both for beauty of face and wisdom of words 22 Likewise Holofernes said unto her God hath done well to send thee before the people that strength might be in our hands and destruction upon them that lightly regard my lord 23 And now thou art both beautiful in thy countenance and witty in thy
is at rest but the life of the fool is worse then death 12 Seven days do men mourn for him that is dead but for a fool and an ungodly man all the days of his life 13 Talk not much with a fool and go not to him that hath no understanding * Ch. 12.12 beware of him lest thou have trouble and thou shalt never be defiled ‖ Or when â—e sâ—akes off in filth with his fooleries depart from him and thou shalt finde rest and never be ‖ Or wearied disquieted with madness 14 What is heavier then lead what is the name thereof but a fool 15 * Pro. 27.3 Sand and salt and a mass of iron is easier to bear then a man without understanding 16 As timber girt and bound together in a building cannot be loosed with shaking so the heart that is stablished by advised counsel shall fear at no time 17 A heart settled upon a thought of understanding is as a fair plaistering ‖ Or of a polished wall on the wall of a gallery 18 Pales set on an high place will never stand against the wind so a fearful heart in the imagination of a fool cannot stand against any fear 19 He that pricketh the eye will make tears to fall and he that pricketh the heart maketh it to shew her knowledge 20 Whoso casteth a stone at the birds frayeth them away and he that uphraideth his friend breaketh friendship 21 Though thou drewest a sword at thy friend yet despair not for there may be a returning to favour 22 If thou hast opened thy mouth against thy friend fear not for there may be a reconciliation except for upbraiding or pride or disclosing of secrets or a treacherous wound for for these things every friend will depart 23 Be faithful to thy neighbour in his poverty that thou mayest rejoyce in his prosperity abide stedfast unto him in the time of his trouble that thou mayest be heir with him in his heritage for a mean eâ—tate is not always to be contemned nor the rich that is foolish to be had in admiration 24 As the vapour and smoke of a furnace gueth before the fire so reviling before bloud 25 I will not be ashamed to defend a friend neither will I hide my fell from him 26 And if any evil happen unto me by him every one that heareth it will beware of him 27 * Psal 141.3 Who shall set a watch before my mouth and a seal of wisdom upon my lips that I fall not suddenly by them and that my tongue destroy me not CHAP. XXIII 1 A prayer for grace to flee sin 9 We may not use swearing 14 but remember our parents 16 Of three sorts of sin 23 The adulterous wife sinneth many ways O Lord Father and Governour of all my whole life leave me not to their counsels and let me not fall by them 2 Who will set scourges over my thoughts and the discipline of wisdom over mine heart that they spare me not for mine ignorances and it pass not by my sins 3 Lest mine ignorances increase and my sins abound to my destruction and I fall before mine adversaries and mine enemy rejoyce over me whose hope is far from thy mercy 4 O Lord Father and God of my life give me not a proud look but turn away from thy servants always ‖ Or a giant-like a haughty minde 5 Turn away from me vain hopes and concupiscence and thou shalt hold him up that is desirous always to serve thee 6 Let not the greediness of the belly nor lust of the flesh take hold of me and give not over me thy servant into an impudent minde 7 Hear O ye children the discipline of the mouth he that keepeth it shall never be taken in his lips 8 The sinner shall be left in his foolishness both the evil speaker and the proud shall fall thereby 9 * Ex. 20.7 Ch. 27.14 Mat. 5.33 34. Accustom not thy mouth to swearing neither use thy self to the naming of the Holy one 10 For as a servant that is continually beaten shall not be without a blew mark so he that sweareth and nameth God continually shall not be faultless 11 A man that useth much swearing shall be filled with iniquity and the plague shall never depart from his house if he shall offend his sin shall be upon him and if he acknowledge not his sin he maketh a double offence and if he swear in vain he shall not be †Gr. justified innocent but his house shall be full of calamities 12 There is a word that is clothed about with death God grant that it be not found in the heritage of Jacob for all such things shall be far from the godly and they shall not wallow in their sins 13 Use not thy mouth to untemperate swearing for therein is the word of sin 14 Remember thy father and thy mother when thou sittest among great men Be not forgetful before them and so thou by thy custom become a fool and wish that thou hadst not been born and curse the day of thy nativity 15 * 2 Sam. 16.7 The man that is accustomed to opprobrious words will never be reformed all the days of his life 16 Two sorts of men multiply sin and the third will bring wrath a hot minde is as a burning fire it will never be quenched till it be consumed a form catour in the body of his flesh will never cease till he hath kindled a fire 17 * Prov. 9.17 All bread is sweet to a whoremonger he will not leave off till he die 18 A man that breaketh wedlock saying thus in his heart * Job 24.15 Isa 29.15 Who seeth me I am compassed about with darkness the walls cover me and no body seeth me what need I to fear the most High will not remember my sins 19 Such a man onely feareth the eyes of men and knoweth not that the eyes of the Lord are ten thousand times brighter then the sun beholding all the ways of men and considering the most secret parts 20 He knew all things ere ever they were created so also after they were perfected he looked upon them all 21 * Lev. 20.10 Deu. 22.22 This man shall be punished in the streets of the city and where he suspecteth not he shall be taken 22 Thus shall it go also with the wife that leaveth her husband and bringeth in an heir by ‖ Or a stranger another 23 For first she hath disobeyed the * Ex. 20.14 law of the most High and secondly she hath trespassed against her own husband thirdly she hath played the whore in adultery and brought children by another man 24 She shall be brought out into the congregation and ‖ Or visitation inquisition shall be made of her children 25 Her * Wiâ—â— 4.3 children shall not take root and her branches shall bring forth no fruit 26 She shall leave her memory to be
understanding 13 The discourse of fools is irksome and their sport is in the wantonness of sin 14 The talk of him that sweareth much maketh the hair stand upright and their brawls make one stop his ears 15 The strife of the proud is bloud shedding and their revilings are grievous to the ear 16 Whoso discovereth secrets loseth his credit and shall never finde friend to his minde 17 Love thy friend and be faithful unto him but if thou bewrayest his secrets follow no more after him 18 For as a man hath destroyed his enemy so hast thou lost the love of thy neighbour 19 As one that letteth a bird go out of his hand so hast thou let thy neighbour go and shalt not get him again 20 Follow after him no more for he is too far off he is as a roe escaped out of the snare 21 As for a wound it may be bound up and after reviling there may be reconcilement but he that bewrayeth secrets is without hope 22 He * Prov. 10.10 that winketh with the eyes werketh evil and he that knoweth him will depart from him 23 When thou art present he will speak sweetly and will admire thy words but at the last he will ‖ Or alter his speech writhe his mouth and slander thy sayings 24 I have hated many things but nothing like him for the Lord will hate him 25 Whoso casteth a stone on high casteth it on his own head and a deceitful stroke shall make wounds 26 * Ps 7.15 Prov. 26.27 Ecâ—l 10.8 Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein and he that setteth a trap shall be taken therein 27 He that worketh mischief it shall fall upon him and he shall not know whence it cometh 28 Mockery and reproach are from the proud but * Deut. â—â— 35 Râ—n â—2 19 vengeance as a lion shall lie in wait for them 29 They that rejoyce at the fall of the righteous shall be taken in the snare and anguish shall consume them before they die 30 Malice and wrath even these are abominations and the sinful man shall have them both CHAP. XXVIII 1 Against revengâ— 8 quarreling 10 anger 15 and backbiting HE that revengeth shall finde vengeance from the Lord and he will surely keep his sins in remembrance 2 Forgive thy neighbour the hurt that he hath done unto thee so shall thy sins also be forgiven when thou prayest 3 One man beareth hatred against another and doth he seek pardon from the Lord 4 He sheweth no mercy to a man which is like himself and doth he ask forgiveness of his own sins 5 If he that is but flesh nourish hatred who will intreat for pardon of his sins 6 Remember thy end and let enmity cease remember corruption and death and abide in the commandments 7 Remember the commandments and bear no malice to thy neighbour remember the covenant of the Highest and wink at ignorance 8 * Chap. 8.1 Abstain from strife and thou shalt diminish thy sins for a furious man will kindle strife 9 A sinful man disquieteth friends and maketh debate among them that be at peace 10 * Prov. 26.21 As the matter of the fire is so it burneth and as a mans strength is so is his wrath and according to his riches his anger riseth and the stronger they are which contend the more they will be inflamed 11 An hasty contention kindleth a fire and an hasty fighting sheddeth bloud 12 If thou blow the spark it shall burn if thou spit upon it it shall be quenched and both these come out of thy mouth 13 * Chap. 21.28 Curse the whisperer and double-tongued for such have destroyed many that were at peace 14 A backbiting tongue hath â—â—squieted many and driven them from nation to nation strong cities hath it pulled down and overthrown the houses of great men 15 A ‖ Or tâ—ed backbiting tongue hath cast out vertuous women and deprived them of their labours 16 Whoso hearkneth unto it shall never finde rest and never dwell quietly 17 The stroke of the whip maketh marks in the flesh but the stroke of the tongue breaketh the bones 18 Many have faln by the edge of the sword but not so many as have faln by the tongue 19 Well is he that is defended from it and hath not passed through the venome thereof who hath not drawn the yoke thereof nor hath been bound in her bands 20 For the yoke thereof is a yoke of iron and the bands thereof are bands of brass 21 The death thereof is an evil death the grave were better then it 22 It shall not have rule over them that fear God neither shall they be burnt with the flame thereof 23 Such as forsake the Lord shall fall into it and it shall burn in them and not be quenched it shall be sent upon them as a lion and devour them as a leopard 24 Look that thou hedge thy possession about with thorns and binde up thy silver and gold 25 And weight thy words in a balance and make a door and bar for thy mouth 26 Beware thou slide not by it lest thou fall before him that lieth in wait CHAP. XXIX 1 We must shew mercy and lend 4 but the borrower most not defraud the lender 9 Give alms 14 A good man will not undo his surety 18 To be surety and undertake for others is dangerous â—â— It is better to live at home then to â—ojourn HE that is merciful will lend unto his neighbour and he that strengthneth his hand keepeth the commandments 2 * Deut. 15.8 Matt. â— 41 Luke 6 35. Lend to thy neighbour in time of his need and pay thou thy neighbour again in due season 3 Keep thy word and deal faithfully with him and thou shalt always finde the thing that is necessary for thee 4 Many when a thing was lent them reckoned it to be found and put them to trouble that helped them 5 Till he hath received he will kiss a mans hand and for his neighbours money he will speak submissly but when he should repay he will prolong the time and return words of grief and complain of the time 6 ‖ Or If he be able If he prevail he shall hardly receive the half and he will count as if he had found it if not he hath deprived him of his money and he hath gotten him an enemy without cause he payeth him with cursings and raylings and for honour he will pay him disgrace 7 Many therefore have refused to lend for other mens ill dealing fearing to be defrauded 8 Yet have thou patience with a man in poor estate and delay not to shew him mercy 9 Help the poor for the commandments sake and turn him not away because of his poverty 10 Lose thy money for thy brother and thy friend and let it not rust under a stone to be lost 11 * Dan. 4.27 Matt. 6.20 Luk. â—1 41 12 3â— Acts 11.4 1 Tim. 6.18 19. a very fair woman and one that feared the Lord. 3 Her parents also were righteous and taught their daughter according to the law of Moses 4 Now Joacim was a great rich man and had a fair garden joyning unto his house and to him resorted the Jews because he was more honourable then all others 5 The same year were appointed two of the ancients of the people to be judges such as the Lord spake of that wickedness came from Babylon from ancient judges who seemed to govern the people 6 These kept much at Joacims house and all that had any suits in law came unto them 7 Now when the people departed away at noon Susanna went into her husbands garden to walk 8 And the two elders saw her going in every day and walking so that their lust was inflamed toward her 9 And they perverted their own minde and turned away their eyes that they might not look unto heaven nor remember just judgements 10 And albeit they both were wounded with her love yet durst not one shew another his grief 11 For they were ashamed to declare their lust that they desired to have to do with her 12 Yet they watched diligently from day to day to see her 13 And the one said to the other Let us now go home for it is dinner-time 14 So when they were gone out they parted the one from the other and turning back again they came to the same place and after they had asked one another the cause they acknowledged their lust then appointed they a time both together when they might finde her alone 15 And it fell out as they watched a fit time she went in †Gr. as yesterday and the day before as before with two maids onely and she was desirous to wash her self in the garden for it was hot 16 And there was no body there save the two elders that had hid themselves and watched her 17 Then she said to her maids Bring me oyl and washing-balls and shut the garden doors that I may wash me 18 And they did as she bade them and shut the garden-doors and went out themselves at ‖ Or side-doors privy doors to fetch the things that she had commanded them but they saw not the elders because they were hid 19 Now when the maids were gone forth the two elders rose up and ran unto her saying 20 Behold the garden-doors are shut that no man can see us and we are in love with thee therefore consent unto us and lie with us 21 If thou wilt not we will bear witness against thee that a young man was with thee and therefore thou didst send away thy maids from thee 22 Then Susanna sighed and said I am straighted on every side for if I do this thing it is death unto me and if I do it not I cannot escape your hands 23 It is better for me to fall into your hands and not to do it then to sin in the sight of the Lord. 24 With that Susanna cried with a loud voice and the two elders cried out against her 25 Then ran the one and opened the garden-door 26 So when the servants of the house heard the cry in the garden they rushed in at a privy door to see what was done unto her 27 But when the elders had declared their matter the servants were greatly ashamed for there was never such a report made of Susanna 28 And it came to pass the next day when the people were assembled to her husband Joacim the two elders came also full of mischievous imagination against Susanna to put her to death 29 And said before the people Send for Susanna the daughter of Chelcias Joacims wife and so they sent 30 So she came with her father and mother her children and all her kindred 31 Now Susanna was a very delicate woman and beauteous to behold 32 And these wicked men commanded to uncover her face for she was covered that they might be filled with her beauty 33 Therefore her friends and all that saw her wept 34 Then the two elders stood up in the mids of the people and said their hands upon her head 35 And she weeping looked up towards heaven for her heart trusted in the Lord. 36 And the elders said As we walked in the garden alone this woman came in with two maids and shut the garden doors and sent the maids away 37 Then a young man who there was hid came unto her and lay with her 38 Then we that stood in a corner of the garden seeing this wickedness ran unto them 39 And when we saw them together the man we could not hold for he was stronger then we and opened the door and leaped out 40 But having taken this woman we asked who the young man was but she would not tell us these things do we testifie 41 Then the assembly beleeve them as those that were the elders and judges of the people so they condemned her to death 42 Then Susanna cried out with a loud voice and said O everlasting God that knowest the secrets and knowest all things before they be 43 Thou knowest that they have born false witness against me and behold I must die whereas I never did such things as these men have maliciously invented against me 44 And the Lord heard her voice 45 Therefore when she was led to be put to death the Lord raised up the holy spirit of a young youth whose name was Daniel 46 Who cried with a loud voice I am clear from the bloud of this woman 47 Then all the people turned them towards him and said What mean those words that thou hast spoken 48 So he standing in the midst of them said Are ye such fools ye sons of Israel that without examination or knowledge of the truth ye have condemned a daughter of Israel 49 Return again to the place of judgement for they have born false witness against her 50 Wherefore all the people turned again in haste and the elders said unto him Come sit down among us and shew it us seeing God hath given thee the honour of an elder 51 Then said Daniel unto them Put these two aside one far from another and I will examine them 52 So when they were put asunder one from another he called one of them and said unto him O thou that art waxen old in wickedness now thy sins which thou hast committed aforetime are come to light 53 For thou hast pronounced false judgement and hast condemned the innocent and hast let the guilty go free albeit the Lord saith * Exod. 23.7 The innocent and righteous shalt thou not slay 54 Now then if thou hast seen her tell me Under what tree sawest thou them companying together Who answered Under a †Gr. lentiâ—k-trâ—â— mastick-tree 55 And Daniel said Very well thou hast lied against thine own head for even now the angel of God hath received the sentence of God to cut thee in two 56 So
fathers graves 40 Now under the coats of every one that was slain they found things consecrated to the idols of the Jamnites which is forbidden the Jews by * Deut. â—7 7 the law Then every man saw that this was the cause wherefore they were slain 41 All men therefore praising the Lord the righteous Judge who had opened the things that were hid 42 Betook themselves unto prayer and besought him that the sin committed might wholly be put out of remembrance Besides that noble Judas exhorted the people to keep themselves from sin forsomuch as they saw before their eyes the things that came to pass for the sins of those that were slain 43 And when he had made a gathering throughout the company to the sum of two thousand drachnies of silver he sent it to Jerusalem to offer a sin offering doing therein very well and honestly in that he was mindful of the resurrection 44 For if he had not hoped that they that were slain should have risen again it had been superfluous and vain to pray for the dead 45 And also in that he perceived that there was great favour said up for those that died godly It was an holy and good thought Whereupon he made a reconciliation for the dead that they might be delivered from sin CHAP. XIII 1 Eupator invadeth Judea 15 Judas by night slayeth many 18 Eupators purpose is defeated 23 He maketh peace with Judas IN the hundred fourty and ninth year it was told Judas that Antiochus Eupator was coming with a great power into Judea 2 And with him Lysias his protectour and ruler of his affairs having either of them a Grecian power of footmen an hundred ten thousand and hors-men five thousand and three hundred and elephants two and twenty and three hundred chariots armed with hooks 3 Menelaus also joyned himself with them and with great dissimulation encouraged Antiochus not for the safeguard of the countrey but because he thought to have been made governour 4 But the King of kings moved Antiochus minde against this wicked wretch and Lysias informed the king that this man was the cause of all mischief so that the king commanded to bring him unto Berea and to put him to death as the manner is in that place 5 Now there was in that place a towre of fifty cubits high full of ashes and it had a round instrument which on every side hanged down into the ashes 6 And whosoever was condemned of sacriledge or had committed any other grievous crime there did all men thrust him unto death 7 Such a death it hapned that wicked man to die not having so much as burial in the earth and that most justly 8 For insomuch as he had committed many sins about the altar whose fire and ashes were holy he received his death in ashes 9 Now the king came with a barbarous and haughty minde to do far worse to the Jews then had been done in his fathers time 10 Which things when Judas perceived he commanded the multitude to call upon the Lord night and day that if ever at any other time he would now also help them being at the point to be put from their law from their countrey and from the holy temple 11 And that he would not suffer the people that ‖ Or bad bad a little respite had even now been but a little refreshed to be in subjection to the blasphemous nations 12 So when they had all done this together and besought the merciful Lord with weeping and fasting and lying flat upon the groud three days long Judas having exhorted them commanded they should be in a readiness 13 And Judas being apart with the elders determined before the kings host should enter into Judea and get the city to go forth and try the matter in fight by the help of the Lord. 14 So when he had committed all to the ‖ Or Lord. Creatour of the world and exhorted his souldiers to fight manfully even unto death for the laws the temple the city the countrey the common-wealth he camped by Modin 15 And having given the watch-word to them that were about him Victory is of God with the most valiant choice young men he went in into the kings tent by night slew in the camp about four thousand men and the chiefest of the elephants with all that were upon him 16 And at last they filled the camp with sear and tumult and departed with good success 17 This was done in the break of the day because the protection of the Lord did help him 18 Now when the king had taken a taste of the manliness of the Jews he went about to take the holds by policy 19 And marched towards Bethsura which was a strong hold of the Jews but he was put to flight failed and lost of his men 20 For Judas had conveyed unto them that were in it such things as were necessary 21 But Rhodochus who was in the Jews host disclosed the secrets to the enemies therefore he was sought out and when they had gotten him they put him in prison 22 The king treated with them in Bethsura the second time gave his hand took theirs departed sought with Judas was over come 23 Heard that Philip who was leâ—t over the affairs in Antioch ‖ Or rebelled was desperately bent confounded intreated the Jews submitted himself and sware to all equal conditions agreed with them and offered sacrifice honoured the temple and dealt kindly with the place 24 And accepted well of Maccabeus made him principal governour from Ptolemais unto the Gerrhenians 25 Came to Ptolemais the people there were grieved for the covenants for they stormed because they would make their covenants void 26 Lysias went up to the judgment-seat said as much as could be in defence of the cause perswaded pacified made them well affected returned to Antioch Thus it went touching the kings coming departing CHAP. XIV 6 Aleimus accuseth Judas 18 Nicanor maketh peace with Judas 39 He seeketh to take Bazis 46 who to escape his bands killeth himself AFter three years was Judas informed that Demetrius the son of Seleucus having entred by the haven of Tripolis with a great power and navy 2 Had taken the countrey and killed Antiochus and Lysias his protectour 3 Now one Alcimus who had been high priest and had defiled himself wilfully in the times of their mingling with the Gentiles seeing that by no means he could save himself nor have any more access to the holy altar 4 Came to king Demetrius in the hundred and one and fiftieth year presenting unto him a crown of gold and a palm and also of the boughs which were ‖ Or thought to be of the temple used solemnly in the temple so that day he held his peace 5 Howbeit having gotten opportunity to further his foolish enterprise and being called into counsel by Demetrius and asked how the Jews stood affected and what they intended he answered thereunto
10 Making request if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you 11 For I long to see you that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift to the end you may be established 12 That is that I may be comforted together ‖ Or in you with you by the mutual faith both of you and me 13 Now I would not have you ignorant brethren that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you but was let hitherto that I might have some fruit ‖ Or in you among you also even as among other Gentiles 14 I am debter both to the Greeks and to the Barbarians both to the wise and to the unwise 15 So as much as in me is I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that beleeveth to the Jew first and also to the Greek 17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith as it is written * Hâ—b 2.4 Gal. 3.11 Heb. 10.38 The just shall live by faith 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who hold the truth in unrighteousness 19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest ‖ Or to them in them for God hath shewed it unto them 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen being understood by the things that are made even his eternal power and Godhead ‖ Or that they may be so that they are without excuse 21 Because that when they knew God they glorified him not as God neither were thankful but became vain in their imaginations and their foolish heart was * Eph. 4.18 darkned 22 Professing themselves to be wise they became fools 23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible * Psal 106.10 God into an image made like to corruptible man and to birds and four-footed beasts and creeping things 24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts to dishonour their own bodies between themselves 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie and worshipped and served the creature more then the Creatour who is blessed for ever Amen 26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections For even their women did change thou natural use into thou which is against nature 27 And likewise also the men leaving the natural use of the woman burned in their lust one toward another men with men working that which is unseemly and receiving in themselves that recompence of their errour which was meet 28 And even as they did not like ‖ Or to acknowledge to retain God in their knowledge God gave them over to ‖ Or a minde â—â—id of judgement a reprobate minde to do those things which are not convenient 29 Being filled with all unrighteousness fornication wickedness covetousness maliciousness full of envy murder debate deceit malignity whisperers 30 Backbiters haters of God despiteful proud boasters inventers of evil things disobedient to parents 31 Without understanding covenant-breakers ‖ Or unsociable without natural affection implacable unmerciful 32 Who knowing the judgement of God that they which commit such things are worthy of death not onely do the same but ‖ Or â—sâ—â—t with them have pleasure in them that do them CHAP. II. 1 They that sin though they condemn it in others cannot excuse themselves 6 and much less escape the judgement of God 9 whether they be Jews or Gentiles 14 The Gentiles cannot escape 17 nor yet the Jews 25 whom their circumcision shall not profit if they keep not the law THerefore thou art inexcusable O man whosoever thou art that judgest * Mâ—l 7.2 for wherein thou judgest another thou condemnest thy self for thou that judgest doest the same things 2 But we are sure that the judgement of God is according to truth against them which commit such things 3 And thinkest thou this O man that judgest them which do such things doest the fame that thou shalt escape the judgement of God 4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and long-suffering not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance 5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart * Jam. 5.3 treasurest up unto thy self wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgement of God 6 * Psâ— 2.12 â—â—t 16.27 â—er 22 12. Greek Gentile 10 But glory honour and peace to every man that worketh good to the Jew first and also to the †Gr. Greek Gentile 11 For * Deu. 10.17 2 Chr. 19.7 Job 34.19 Act. 10.34 Gal. 2.6 Eph. 6.9 Col. 3.25 1 Pet. 1.17 there is no respect of persons with God 12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law 13 For * Mat. 7.21 Jam. 1.22 not the hearers of the law are just before God but the doers of the law shall be justified 14 For when the Gentiles which have not the law do by nature the things contained in the law these having not the law are a law unto themselves 15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts ‖ Or the conscience witnessing with them their conscience also bearing witness and their thoughts ‖ Or between themselves the mean while accusing or else excusing one another 16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel 17 Behold thou art called a Jew and restest in the law and makest thy boast of God 18 And knowest his will and ‖ Or triast the things that differ approvest the things that are more excellent being instructed out of the law 19 And art confident that thou thy self art a guide of the blinde a light of them which are in darkness 20 An instructer of the foolish a teacher of babes which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law 21 Thou therefore which teachest another teachest thou not thy self thou that preachest a man should not steal dost thou steal 22 Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery dost thou commit adultery thou that abhorrelâ— idols dost thou commit sacriledge 23 Thou that makest thy boast of the law through breaking the law
resurrection of the dead 22 For as in Adam all die even so in Christ shall all be made alive 23 But * 1 Thess 4.15 every man in his own order Christ the first-fruits afterward they that are Christs at his coming 24 Then cometh the end when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God even the Father when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power 25 For he must reign * Psal 110.1 till he hath put all enemies under his feet 26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death 27 For he * Psal 8.6 hath put all things under his feet But when he saith all things are put under him it is manifest that he is excepted which did put all things under him 28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him that God may be all in all 29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead if the dead rise not at all why are they then baptized for the dead 30 And why stand we in jeopardy every hour 31 I protest by ‖ Some read our your rejoycing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord I die daily 32 If ‖ Or to speak after the manner of men after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus what advantageth it me if the dead rise not * Isa 22.23 let us eat and drink for tomorrow we die 33 Be not deceived evil communications corrupt good manners 34 Awake to righteousness and sin not for some have not the knowledge of God I speak this to your shame 35 But some man will say How are the dead raised up and with what body do they come 36 Thou fool that which thou sowest is not quickned exceptit die 37 And that which thou sowest thou sowest not that body that shall be but bare grain it may chance of wheat or of some other grain 38 But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him and to every seed his own body 39 All flesh is not the same flesh but there is one kinde of flesh of men another flesh of beasts another of fishes and another of birds 40 There are also celestial bodies and bodies terrestrial but the glory of the celestial is one and the glory of the terrestrial is another 41 There is one glory of the sun and another glory of the moon and another glory of the stars for one star differeth from another star in glory 42 So also is the resurrection of the dead It is sown in corruption it is raised in incorruption 43 It is sown in dishonour it is raised in glory it is sown in weakness it is raised in power 44 It is sown a natural body it is raised a spiritual body There is a natural body and there is a spiritual body 45 And so it is written The first man Adam * Gen. 1.7 was made a living soul the last Adam was made a quickning spirit 46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual but that which is natural and afterward that which is spiritual 47 The first man is of the earth earthy the second man is the Lord from heaven 48 As is the earthy such are they also that are earthy and as is the heavenly such are they also that are heavenly 49 And as we have born the image of the earthy we shall also bear the image of the heavenly 50 Now this I say brethren that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God neither doth corruption inherit incorruption 51 Behold I shew you a mystery We shall not all sleep but we shall all be changed 52 In a moment in the twinkling of an eye at the last * Matth. 24.31 1 Thess 4.16 trump for the trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised incorruptible and we shall be changed 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption and this mortal must put on immortality 54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption and this mortal shall have put on immortality then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written * Isa 25.8 Hos 13.14 Death is swallowed up in victory 55 O death where is thy sting O ‖ Or hell grave where is thy victory 56 The sting of death is sin and the strength of sin is the law 57 But thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ 58 Therefore my beloved brethren be ye stedfast unmoveable always abounding in the work of the Lord forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. CHAP. XVI 1 He exhorteth them to relieve the want of the brethren at Jerusalem 10 commendeth Timothy 13 and after friendly admonitions 16 shutteth up his epistle with divers salutations NOw concerning the collection for the saints as I have given order to the churches of Galatia even so do ye 2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store as God hath prospered him that there be no gatherings when I come 3 And when I come whomsoever you shall approve by your letters them will I send to bring your †Gr. â—ife liberality unto Jerusalem 4 And if it be meet that I go also they shall go with me 5 Now I will come unto you when I shall pass through Macedonia for I do pass through Macedonia 6 And it may be that I will abide yea and winter with you that ye may bring me on my journey whithersoever I go 7 For I will not see you now by the way but I trust to tarry a while with you if the Lord permit 8 But I will tarry at Ephesus until Pentecost 9 For a great door and effectual is opened unto me and there are many adversaries 10 Now if Timotheus come see that he may be with you without fear for he worketh the work of the Lord as I also do 11 Let no man therefore despise him but conduct him forth in peace that he may come unto me for I look for him with the brethren 12 As touching our brother Apollos I greatly desired him to come unto you with the brethren but his will was not at all to come at this time but he will come when he shall have convenient time 13 Watch ye stand fast in the faith quit you like men be strong 14 Let all your things be done with charity 15 I beseech you brethren ye know the house of Stephanas that it is the first-fruits of Achaia and that they have addicted themselves to the ministery of the saints 16 That ye submit your selves unto such and to every one that helpeth with us and laboureth 17 I am glad of the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus for that which was lacking on your part they have supplied 18 For they have refreshed my spirit and yours therefore acknowledge ye
