have_v such_o a_o temper_n of_o spirit_n when_o danger_n be_v grow_v especial_o great_a and_o thick_a upon_o they_o answ_n no_o what_o say_v you_o of_o these_o three_o child_n i_o speak_v of_o man_n now_o they_o be_v careless_a object_n you_o will_v say_v it_o may_v be_v that_o be_v a_o extraordinary_a case_n answ_n nay_o you_o shall_v find_v that_o the_o very_a ground_n of_o the_o undauntednesse_n of_o their_o spirit_n be_v the_o same_o which_o the_o lord_n propose_v in_o this_o text_n to_o put_v we_o out_o of_o fear_n we_o be_v careless_a to_o answer_v thou_o in_o this_o matter_n why_o our_o god_n who_o we_o serve_v be_v able_a to_o deliver_v we_o and_o he_o will_v deliver_v we_o the_o carelessness_n of_o their_o spirit_n be_v ground_v upon_o a_o common_a principle_n of_o the_o whole_a church_n and_o upon_o the_o same_o the_o lord_n propose_v to_o all_o the_o rest_n of_o his_o people_n as_o well_o as_o to_o they_o they_o be_v confident_a god_n be_v their_o god_n neither_o the_o greatness_n of_o the_o king_n nor_o the_o violence_n of_o his_o threaten_n can_v stir_v they_o a_o jot_n they_o be_v all_o nothing_o to_o god_n who_o be_v their_o god_n who_o be_v able_a to_o deliver_v they_o and_o will_v deliver_v they_o their_o confidence_n in_o this_o be_v that_o which_o make_v they_o break_v forth_o into_o this_o bold_a expression_n we_o be_v careless_a to_o answer_v thou_o in_o this_o matter_n but_o now_o let_v we_o consider_v what_o the_o people_n of_o god_n shall_v not_o fear_v object_n what_o to_o be_v afraid_a of_o nothing_o do_v not_o the_o member_n of_o christ_n so_o neither_o ought_v we_o to_o fear_v the_o sin_n of_o other_o object_n you_o will_v say_v suppose_v there_o be_v no_o sin_n of_o our_o own_o to_o pull_v down_o judgement_n yet_o the_o world_n be_v full_a of_o iniquity_n and_o abundance_n of_o sin_n there_o be_v upon_o the_o time_n that_o bring_v down_o wrath_n from_o heaven_n answ_n though_o it_o be_v true_a that_o nationall_n sin_n bring_v down_o nationall_n judgement_n and_o wrath_n yet_o all_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o time_n can_v do_v a_o member_n of_o christ_n a_o lot_n of_o hurt_n and_o therefore_o as_o they_o can_v do_v he_o any_o hurt_n so_o he_o need_v not_o be_v afraid_a of_o they_o i_o will_v make_v it_o appear_v that_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n the_o cry_a sin_n of_o the_o time_n can_v do_v a_o believer_n no_o hurt_n at_o all_o mark_v the_o plea_n of_o the_o lord_n often_o mention_v in_o ezekiel_n against_o the_o people_n that_o hit_v he_o in_o the_o tooth_n as_o if_o he_o be_v unjust_a the_o father_n say_v they_o have_v eat_v sour_a grape_n and_o the_o child_n tooth_n be_v set_v on_o edge_n he_o plead_v his_o own_o innocency_n in_o it_o and_o direct_o answer_v that_o the_o bear_v and_o leave_v some_o sin_n for_o believer_n to_o bear_v and_o so_o also_o leave_v some_o punishment_n for_o believer_n to_o suffer_v for_o it_o be_v the_o lamb_n of_o god_n that_o take_v away_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n and_o that_o he_o do_v take_v they_o all_o away_o appeareth_z 1_o john_n 1.7_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n his_o son_n cleanse_v we_o from_o all_o sin_n whether_o then_o you_o consider_v every_o elect_a person_n as_o he_o sin_v by_o himself_o or_o as_o he_o share_v with_o other_o all_o these_o sin_n the_o blood_n of_o christ_n cleanse_v he_o from_o and_o therefore_o but_o the_o sin_n do_v not_o at_o all_o hurt_n and_o though_o the_o lord_n do_v afflict_v that_o will_v do_v you_o no_o hurt_n neither_o affliction_n be_v the_o physic_n of_o god_n to_o purge_v and_o sanctify_v the_o conversation_n will_v a_o man_n think_v that_o be_v ready_a to_o die_v of_o the_o stone_n or_o wind-colic_n or_o stoppage_n in_o the_o fromach_n if_o a_o physician_n come_v and_o give_v he_o a_o bitter_a potion_n that_o he_o do_v do_v he_o any_o hurt_n when_o he_o know_v it_o be_v to_o recover_v his_o life_n and_o save_v it_o he_o know_v he_o die_v if_o he_o heal_v not_o the_o infirmity_n god_n use_v no_o physic_n no_o chastisement_n and_o affliction_n but_o it_o shall_v work_v for_o good_a so_o the_o apostie_a express_v it_o in_o hebr._n 12._o no_o affliction_n for_o the_o breed_n of_o his_o own_o child_n nay_o god_n go_v further_a he_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o his_o child_n at_o his_o own_o beck_n and_o therefore_o can_v best_o tell_v which_o way_n to_o work_v upon_o their_o spirit_n and_o to_o beget_v that_o in_o they_o which_o he_o call_v for_o of_o they_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v they_o not_o to_o be_v afraid_a nor_o dismay_v let_v the_o lord_n propose_v his_o way_n to_o bring_v they_o to_o this_o composedness_n and_o fixedness_n of_o spirit_n it_o be_v but_o presumption_n in_o any_o creature_n to_o conceive_v there_o may_v be_v better_a way_n to_o work_v upon_o the_o spirit_n of_o man_n then_o that_o which_o god_n prescribe_v and_o it_o be_v worth_a your_o observation_n to_o consider_v that_o when_o the_o lord_n put_v his_o people_n upon_o a_o composedness_n and_o fixedness_n of_o spirit_n he_o do_v not_o say_v fear_v not_o for_o you_o have_v fast_v for_o you_o have_v pray_v for_o you_o have_v forsake_v your_o sin_n and_o deny_v yourselves_o and_o walk_v holy_o with_o i_o and_o therefore_o because_o you_o have_v do_v this_o and_o that_o fear_v you_o not_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o say_v so_o here_o he_o have_v high_a proposition_n that_o he_o propose_v that_o have_v more_o excellent_a virtue_n to_o move_v his_o people_n he_o say_v fear_v not_o i_o be_o toy_n god_n i_o will_v help_v thou_o and_o uphold_v thou_o seem_v that_o the_o more_o sin_n a_o man_n do_v commit_v the_o more_o will_v the_o glory_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n appear_v in_o the_o pardon_v of_o these_o sin_n and_o so_o i_o shall_v never_o have_v they_o to_o make_v any_o such_o abominable_a inference_n from_o such_o truth_n and_o he_o also_o give_v the_o reason_n why_o they_o can_v make_v such_o use_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n how_o shall_v we_o that_o be_v dead_a unto_o sin_n live_v any_o long_a therein_o to_o the_o apostle_n the_o inference_n of_o the_o objector_n from_o this_o argument_n seem_v so_o absurd_a that_o he_o do_v appeal_v to_o the_o adversary_n themselves_o how_o such_o a_o inference_n as_o this_o can_v follow_v such_o a_o proposition_n he_o do_v not_o say_v positive_o that_o they_o can_v live_v in_o sin_n that_o be_v dead_a to_o it_o but_o he_o put_v the_o question_n to_o they_o how_o it_o can_v be_v and_o whereas_o some_o may_v answer_v yea_o they_o may_v easy_o do_v it_o no_o say_v the_o apostle_n they_o that_o be_v partaker_n of_o this_o grace_n be_v dead_a unto_o sin_n and_o how_o can_v they_o live_v in_o it_o when_o they_o be_v dead_a to_o it_o the_o glorious_a power_n of_o this_o grace_n reveal_v strikes_z sin_n dead_a in_o man_n or_o rather_o strike_v man_n dead_a to_o sin_n sin_n shall_v not_o have_v dominion_n over_o you_o say_v the_o apostle_n for_o you_o be_v not_o under_o the_o law_n but_o under_o grace_n and_o as_o you_o shall_v hear_v by_o and_o by_o the_o apostle_n make_v the_o very_a grace_n of_o god_n to_o have_v that_o power_n in_o it_o as_o to_o break_v the_o neck_n of_o sin_n in_o the_o believer_n this_o be_v the_o most_o certain_a truth_n of_o the_o text_n and_o spring_v direct_o from_o it_o there_o be_v a_o death_n unto_o sin_n where_o there_o be_v a_o revelation_n effectual_o of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n to_o person_n to_o who_o it_o do_v belong_v it_o bring_v a_o dart_n with_o it_o to_o slay_v sin_n the_o law_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o life_n that_o be_v in_o christ_n have_v free_v i_o from_o the_o law_n of_o sin_n and_o death_n and_o what_o the_o law_n can_v not_o do_v in_o that_o it_o be_v weak_a through_o the_o flesh_n god_n it_o seem_v i_o be_o buy_v and_o the_o price_n be_v lay_v down_o for_o i_o now_o i_o be_o sure_a enough_o i_o be_o safe_a the_o gate_n of_o hell_n can_v prevail_v against_o i_o i_o may_v live_v as_o i_o listen_v for_o no_o danger_n will_v follow_v now_o i_o may_v take_v liberty_n to_o sin_n now_o if_o the_o apostle_n have_v know_v that_o this_o consequence_n will_v just_o have_v follow_v upon_o salvation_n to_o you_o and_o you_o see_v it_o before_o you_o salvation_n be_v bring_v unto_o you_o and_o not_o your_o well-doing_n but_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v
enemy_n see_v the_o deliver_n up_o of_o his_o christ_n be_v for_o the_o good_a of_o his_o people_n will_v he_o now_o detain_v small_a thing_n in_o comparison_n of_o he_o in_o consideration_n of_o by_o and_o by_o thou_o cry_v out_o that_o such_o and_o such_o sin_n hinder_v god_n that_o he_o will_v not_o give_v thou_o such_o grace_n as_o thou_o need_v and_o at_o last_o thou_o questione_v whether_o god_n do_v give_v thou_o christ_n or_o no_o nay_o when_o thou_o be_v vile_a then_o now_o thou_o be_v thy_o vileness_n then_o do_v not_o hinder_v but_o that_o he_o free_o give_v his_o son_n for_o thou_o thy_o vileness_n much_o less_o shall_v hinder_v thou_o now_o to_o bar_v from_o thou_o those_o spiritual_a gift_n that_o god_n intend_v to_o give_v to_o thou_o here_o objection_n start_v up_o this_o be_v the_o way_n to_o make_v person_n slack_a duty_n and_o to_o be_v careless_a but_o if_o we_o will_v preach_v that_o god_n will_v not_o give_v till_o we_o mend_v ourselves_o and_o leave_v our_o sin_n be_v not_o this_o a_o far_o better_a way_n to_o put_v man_n upon_o it_o then_o thus_o to_o preach_v let_v i_o tell_v you_o we_o must_v not_o be_v more_o wise_a than_o god_n that_o all_o that_o the_o creature_n have_v may_v appear_v to_o be_v from_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o so_o he_o have_v the_o praise_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o own_o grace_n i_o say_v again_o it_o be_v no_o sinfulness_n in_o the_o creature_n shall_v hinder_v god_n communicate_v so_o much_o of_o his_o spirit_n as_o he_o see_v useful_a to_o creature_n and_o he_o will_v take_v order_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o take_v a_o licentious_a liberty_n to_o go_v on_o in_o sin_n or_o neglect_v seek_v god_n because_o they_o know_v it_o be_v not_o their_o seek_n make_v god_n answer_v for_o what_o they_o want_v for_o it_o be_v not_o your_o amend_v nor_o reform_v that_o get_v god_n to_o communicate_v more_o to_o you_o but_o that_o he_o do_v it_o be_v mere_o for_o his_o own_o sake_n from_o his_o mere_a motion_n out_o of_o his_o mere_a compassion_n the_o riches_n of_o which_o be_v purchase_v by_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n this_o be_v the_o only_a spring_n and_o fountain_n that_o bring_v forth_o to_o you_o the_o fullness_n of_o god_n in_o such_o measure_n as_o you_o have_v as_o he_o be_v you_o so_o whatsoever_o in_o he_o be_v fit_a for_o you_o in_o season_n he_o shall_v cease_v to_o be_v his_o own_o when_o he_o cease_v to_o be_v you_o and_o therefore_o belove_v i_o shall_v beseech_v you_o that_o you_o will_v not_o stumble_v at_o god_n himself_o as_o if_o he_o be_v so_o humourous_a and_o peevish_a that_o every_o little_a thing_n not_o that_o any_o sin_n be_v in_o its_o own_o nature_n little_a but_o comparative_o every_o infirmity_n and_o fail_v shall_v make_v he_o pull_v his_o hand_n into_o his_o bosom_n and_o refuse_v to_o give_v his_o grace_n the_o lord_n from_o all_o eternity_n determine_v what_o to_o give_v to_o every_o saint_n and_o have_v every_o act_n of_o every_o believer_n before_o his_o eye_n so_o that_o if_o they_o will_v have_v be_v provocation_n to_o he_o to_o keep_v his_o gift_n he_o shall_v never_o have_v bestow_v any_o upon_o he_o but_o i_o must_v tell_v you_o it_o be_v the_o foundation_n of_o all_o our_o comfort_n in_o all_o our_o fail_n in_o this_o life_n that_o there_o be_v nothing_o that_o we_o enjoy_v from_o god_n but_o what_o well_o let_v we_o go_v a_o little_a further_o and_o counder_v how_o god_n do_v become_v the_o god_n of_o people_n i_o must_v tell_v you_o that_o for_o lack_v of_o clear_a distinguish_n between_o these_o two_o thing_n how_o he_o do_v become_v they_o and_o how_o he_o be_v to_o be_v they_o the_o confound_a of_o these_o that_o be_v so_o distinct_a occasion_n a_o great_a deal_n of_o confusion_n in_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n for_o these_o two_o go_v all_o for_o one_o but_o you_o shall_v see_v the_o difference_n of_o they_o and_o the_o different_a principle_n from_o whence_o they_o flow_v first_o how_o do_v god_n come_v to_o be_v the_o god_n of_o people_n you_o will_v say_v this_o be_v of_o great_a use_n it_o be_v worth_a the_o hear_n let_v it_o cost_v what_o it_o will_v to_o have_v god_n for_o my_o own_o but_o i_o say_v there_o be_v no_o more_o treasure_n in_o god_n to_o be_v for_o our_o use_n than_o it_o be_v free_a to_o i_o say_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n for_o our_o own_o god_n be_v as_o cheap_a as_o it_o be_v rich_a god_n river_n look_v the_o creature_n shall_v bring_v any_o thing_n that_o he_o may_v procure_v of_o god_n to_o be_v his_o god_n but_o we_o do_v partake_v of_o this_o mere_o and_o proper_o from_o the_o pleasure_n of_o his_o own_o will_n i_o say_v there_o be_v original_o and_o efficient_o no_o other_o motive_n nor_o nothing_o concur_v to_o make_v he_o our_o god_n but_o only_o the_o good_a pleasure_n of_o his_o own_o will_n he_o will_v do_v and_o he_o will_v do_v it_o simple_o for_o his_o own_o sake_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v so_o belove_a look_v but_o upon_o the_o creature_n god_n communicate_v and_o give_v his_o image_n only_o to_o the_o son_n of_o man_n let_v we_o make_v man_n after_o our_o own_o image_n how_o do_v man_n thus_o become_v partaker_n of_o the_o image_n of_o god_n more_o than_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o creature_n you_o may_v plain_o see_v there_o be_v nothing_o in_o man_n himself_o nor_o in_o any_o other_o creature_n that_o procure_v this_o privilege_n to_o he_o man_n be_v make_v but_o of_o one_o common_a lump_n with_o other_o creature_n he_o be_v make_v of_o the_o same_o material_n even_o that_o toad_n and_o spider_n be_v now_o that_o which_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o man_n have_v the_o image_n of_o god_n and_o no_o other_o creature_n the_o same_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o believer_n have_v god_n give_v up_o and_o god_n give_v up_o to_o be_v their_o god_n and_o the_o reason_n of_o both_o be_v from_o the_o good_a pleasure_n of_o god_n it_o be_v true_a there_o be_v a_o propriety_n of_o land_n many_o time_n make_v over_o unto_o person_n in_o respect_n of_o amiableness_n or_o desert_n conceive_v to_o be_v in_o these_o person_n &_o so_o it_o be_v confer_v unto_o they_o but_o in_o god_n confer_v himself_o to_o the_o son_n of_o man_n there_o can_v not_o be_v such_o motive_n in_o these_o creature_n the_o ground_n be_v this_o if_o any_o thing_n can_v be_v a_o motive_n to_o the_o lord_n it_o must_v be_v the_o most_o excellent_a thing_n the_o creature_n have_v since_o the_o fall_n their_o fast_n and_o prayer_n and_o mourning_n and_o weep_v and_o self-deniall_n and_o mortification_n and_o cleanse_v of_o themselves_o and_o amend_v and_o the_o like_a but_o it_o be_v impossible_a belove_a there_o shall_v be_v any_o motive_n out_o of_o any_o of_o all_o these_o thing_n for_o god_n to_o communicate_v himself_o and_o to_o give_v himself_o over_o to_o people_n for_o all_o these_o performance_n and_o what_o ever_o else_o be_v in_o man_n they_o be_v but_o branch_n that_o issue_n from_o this_o main_a root_n god_n be_v their_o god_n if_o they_o be_v spiritual_a gift_n they_o issue_v out_o of_o this_o principle_n god_n be_v our_o god_n there_o be_v no_o man_n that_o believe_v that_o fa_v that_o pray_v that_o mourn_v in_o a_o true_o gracious_a manner_n but_o god_n be_v first_o his_o god_n and_o be_v his_o god_n do_v communicate_v these_o thing_n to_o he_o how_o can_v that_o then_o be_v a_o motive_n to_o god_n to_o communicate_v himself_o to_o man_n that_o be_v not_o in_o man_n till_o he_o have_v communicate_v himself_o and_o indeed_o be_v but_o the_o issue_n of_o that_o communion_n that_o he_o have_v afford_v unto_o man_n so_o then_o i_o say_v it_o be_v impossible_a that_o
god_n shall_v fetch_v any_o argument_n or_o any_o motive_n to_o make_v himself_o our_o god_n from_o what_o we_o do_v and_o if_o we_o can_v do_v any_o such_o thing_n yet_o there_o can_v be_v any_o move_a power_n in_o such_o performance_n to_o obtain_v god_n for_o our_o god_n for_o in_o the_o very_o best_a of_o our_o performance_n there_o be_v unrighteousness_n there_o be_v filthiness_n any_o the_o prophet_n say_v that_o all_o our_o righteousness_n be_v as_o filthy_a rag_n sweet_a motive_n to_o prevail_v with_o god_n for_o such_o a_o gift_n as_o to_o communicate_v himself_o no_o belove_a it_o be_v not_o what_o we_o do_v but_o what_o he_o in_o his_o own_o thought_n have_v free_o determine_v to_o do_v for_o we_o object_n but_o you_o will_v say_v christ_n make_v god_n to_o be_v our_o passive_a instrument_n of_o find_v he_o out_o the_o way_n of_o find_v out_o of_o god_n efficient_o to_o be_v our_o god_n be_v the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n acquaint_v the_o spirit_n of_o man_n with_o the_o mind_n of_o the_o lord_n i_o say_v he_o be_v the_o efficient_a all_o the_o world_n be_v not_o able_a to_o work_v any_o impression_n upon_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man_n that_o the_o lord_n be_v his_o god_n but_o only_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n must_v persuade_v the_o spirit_n of_o man_n that_o he_o may_v receive_v this_o principle_n it_o be_v true_a indeed_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n do_v it_o according_a to_o the_o word_n of_o grace_n and_o speak_v no_o more_o to_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man_n but_o what_o be_v in_o the_o word_n of_o grace_n but_o the_o word_n of_o grace_n itself_o do_v not_o of_o itself_o work_v this_o impression_n that_o god_n be_v my_o god_n or_o thy_o god_n but_o the_o impression_n be_v wrought_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n object_n what_o serve_v all_o the_o ordinance_n for_o will_v you_o say_v be_v not_o here_o a_o cry_v down_o of_o ordinance_n there_o will_v be_v still_o this_o scandal_n cast_v upon_o we_o but_o let_v i_o tell_v you_o there_o be_v a_o most_o comfortable_a use_n of_o ordinance_n though_o they_o â—erve_v not_o to_o such_o high_a purpose_n as_o these_o be_v i_o say_v though_o they_o be_v not_o efficient_a to_o beget_v and_o find_v out_o and_o reveal_v to_o the_o spirit_n of_o man_n the_o thing_n that_o concern_v god_n yet_o beside_o the_o efficient_a revelation_n of_o god_n to_o be_v our_o god_n from_o the_o spirit_n alone_o there_o be_v a_o passive_a instrument_n by_o which_o the_o lord_n do_v make_v himself_o know_v to_o be_v the_o god_n of_o his_o people_n but_o that_o way_n be_v mere_o passive_a and_o not_o active_a first_o passive_o god_n make_v himself_o know_v to_o be_v the_o god_n of_o his_o people_n by_o the_o word_n of_o his_o grace_n and_o faith_n lay_v hold_n upon_o the_o word_n of_o grace_n reveal_v and_o more_o subordinate_o in_o prayer_n fast_v receive_v of_o the_o lord_n supper_n and_o such_o ordinance_n so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v mix_v with_o faith_n now_o give_v i_o leave_v in_o a_o few_o word_n to_o communicate_v unto_o you_o the_o full_a use_n and_o utmost_a extent_n of_o god_n thought_n concern_v the_o ordinance_n that_o he_o have_v propound_v how_o far_o forth_o he_o will_v have_v the_o creature_n look_v upon_o the_o ordinance_n and_o as_o much_o as_o may_v be_v put_v upon_o the_o use_n of_o they_o so_o far_o forth_o as_o they_o be_v useful_a know_v therefore_o as_o i_o say_v before_o that_o all_o these_o ordinance_n be_v but_o passive_a way_n of_o convey_v this_o great_a gift_n the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n to_o be_v our_o god_n i_o mean_v more_o plain_o thus_o these_o ordinance_n be_v only_o of_o and_o in_o themselves_o empty_a dry_a channel_n or_o pipe_n through_o which_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n bring_v through_o which_o the_o spring_n convey_v his_o water_n into_o a_o cistern_n the_o channel_n itself_o communicate_v none_o of_o its_o own_o only_o it_o be_v a_o passage_n through_o which_o the_o spring_n convey_v his_o water_n so_o be_v all_o the_o ordinance_n even_o faith_n itself_o prayer_n and_o all_o other_o service_n they_o be_v but_o channel_n through_o which_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n pass_v and_o bring_v from_o the_o lord_n himself_o the_o spring_n and_o fountain_n the_o revelation_n
