so_o he_o say_v nothing_o to_o the_o purpose_n neither_o for_o it_o will_v be_v object_v by_o some_o but_o can_v he_o fetch_v i_o off_o though_o i_o have_v do_v as_o david_n as_o solomon_n as_o peter_n or_o the_o like_a it_o must_v be_v answer_v yes_o the_o openness_n of_o the_o term_n anyman_n the_o indefiniteness_n of_o the_o word_n sin_n do_v natural_o allow_v we_o to_o take_v he_o in_o the_o large_a sense_n beside_o he_o bring_v in_o this_o say_v as_o the_o chief_a most_o apt_a and_o fit_a to_o relieve_v one_o crush_v down_o to_o death_n and_o hell_n by_o the_o gild_n of_o sin_n and_o a_o wound_a conscience_n further_o methinks_v by_o these_o word_n the_o apostle_n seem_v to_o triumph_v in_o his_o christ_n say_v my_o brethren_n i_o will_v have_v you_o study_v to_o be_v holy_a advocate_n and_o wherein_o it_o lie_v the_o which_o i_o shall_v do_v these_o three_o way_n 1._o touch_v again_o upon_o the_o nature_n of_o this_o office._n and_o then_o 2._o treat_v of_o the_o order_n and_o place_n that_o it_o have_v among_o the_o rest_n of_o his_o office_n and_o 3._o treat_v of_o the_o occasion_n of_o the_o execution_n of_o this_o office._n first_o to_o touch_v upon_o the_o nature_n of_o this_o office._n it_o be_v that_o which_o impower_v a_o man_n to_o plead_v for_o a_o man_n or_o one_o man_n to_o plead_v for_o another_o not_o in_o common_a discourse_n and_o upon_o common_a occasion_n as_o any_o man_n may_v do_v but_o at_o a_o bar_n or_o before_o a_o court_n of_o judicature_n where_o a_o man_n be_v accuse_v or_o implead_v by_o his_o enemy_n i_o say_v this_o advocate_n be_v office_n be_v such_o both_o here_o and_o in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n a_o advocate_n be_v as_o one_o of_o our_o attorney_n at_o least_o in_o the_o general_n who_o plead_v according_a to_o law_n and_o justice_n for_o one_o or_o other_o that_o be_v in_o trouble_n by_o reason_n of_o some_o
be_v forgive_v or_o shall_v we_o not_o much_o matter_n what_o manner_n of_o life_n we_o live_v because_o we_o be_v set_v free_a from_o the_o law_n of_o sin_n and_o death_n god_n forbid_v let_v grace_n teach_v we_o another_o lesson_n and_o lay_v other_o obligation_n upon_o our_o spirit_n my_o little_a child_n say_v he_o these_o thing_n i_o write_v unto_o you_o that_o you_o sin_v not_o what_o thing_n why_o tiding_n of_o pardon_n and_o salvation_n and_o of_o that_o nearness_n to_o god_n to_o which_o you_o be_v bring_v by_o the_o precious_a blood_n of_o christ._n now_o lest_o also_o by_o this_o last_o exhortation_n he_o shall_v yet_o be_v misunderstand_v he_o add_v and_o if_o any_o man_n sin_n we_o have_v a_o advocate_n with_o the_o father_n jesus_n christ_n the_o righteous_a i_o say_v he_o add_v this_o to_o prevent_v despond_v in_o those_o weak_a and_o sensible_a christian_n that_o be_v so_o quick_a of_o feeling_n and_o of_o decern_v the_o corruption_n of_o their_o nature_n for_o these_o cry_n out_o continual_o that_o there_o be_v nothing_o that_o they_o do_v but_o it_o be_v attend_v with_o sinful_a weakness_n wherefore_o in_o the_o word_n we_o be_v present_v with_o two_o great_a truth_n first_o with_o a_o supposition_n that_o man_n in_o christ_n while_o in_o this_o world_n may_n sin._n if_o any_o man_n sin_n any_o man_n none_o be_v exclude_v for_o all_o or_o any_o one_o of_o the_o all_o of_o they_o that_o christ_n have_v redeem_v and_o forgive_v be_v incident_a to_o sin._n by_o may_v i_o mean_v not_o a_o toleration_n but_o a_o possibility_n for_o there_o be_v not_o a_o man_n not_o a_o just_a man_n upon_o the_o earth_n that_o do_v good_a and_o sin_v not_o eccles._n 7.20_o 1_o kin._n 8.46_o second_o the_o other_o thing_n with_o which_o we_o be_v present_v there_o be_v ground_n to_o inquire_v after_o the_o first_o of_o these_o because_o though_o here_o he_o say_v they_o that_o sin_n have_v a_o advocate_n yet_o in_o the_o very_a next_o chapter_n he_o say_v such_o be_v of_o the_o devil_n have_v not_o see_v god_n neither_o know_v he_o nor_o be_v of_o he_o there_o be_v ground_n also_o to_o inquire_v after_o the_o second_o because_o a_o advocate_n be_v suppose_v in_o the_o text_n to_o be_v of_o use_n to_o they_o that_o sin_n if_o any_o man_n sin_n we_o have_v a_o advocate_n 1._o for_o the_o first_o of_o these_o to_o wit_n what_o the_o apostle_n shall_v here_o mean_v by_o sin_n if_o any_o man_n sin._n i_o answer_v since_o there_o be_v a_o difference_n in_o the_o person_n there_o must_v be_v a_o difference_n in_o the_o sin._n that_o there_o hosea_n have_v it_o when_o they_o transgress_v the_o commandment_n like_o adam_n hos._n 6.7_o now_o these_o be_v the_o sin_n under_o consideration_n by_o the_o apostle_n and_o to_o deliver_v we_o from_o which_o we_o have_v a_o advocate_n with_o the_o father_n but_o for_o the_o sin_n mention_v in_o the_o three_o chapter_n since_o the_o person_n sin_v go_v here_o under_o another_o character_n they_o also_o must_v be_v of_o another_o stamp_n to_o wit_n a_o make_v head_n against_o the_o person_n merit_n and_o grace_n of_o jesus_n christ_n these_o be_v the_o sin_n of_o devil_n in_o the_o world_n and_o for_o these_o there_o be_v no_o remission_n these_o they_o also_o that_o be_v of_o the_o wicked_a one_o commit_v and_o therefore_o sin_n after_o the_o similitude_n of_o satan_n and_o so_o fall_v into_o the_o condemnation_n of_o the_o devil_n second_o but_o what_o be_v it_o for_o jesus_n to_o be_v a_o advocate_n for_o these_o if_o any_o man_n sin_n we_o have_v a_o advocate_n a_o advocate_n be_v one_o who_o plead_v for_o another_o at_o any_o bar_n or_o before_o any_o court_n of_o judicature_n but_o of_o this_o more_o in_o its_o place_n so_o then_o we_o have_v in_o the_o text_n a_o christian_a as_o suppose_v commit_v sin_n and_o a_o declaration_n of_o a_o advocate_n prepare_v to_o plead_v for_o he_o if_o any_o man_n sin_n we_o have_v a_o advocate_n with_o the_o father_n and_o this_o lead_v i_o first_o to_o inquire_v into_o what_o by_o these_o word_n the_o apostle_n must_v of_o necessity_n presuppose_v for_o make_v use_n here_o of_o the_o similitude_n or_o office_n of_o a_o advocate_n thereby_o to_o show_v the_o preservation_n of_o the_o sin_v christian_n he_o must_v 1._o suppose_v that_o god_n as_o judge_n be_v now_o upon_o the_o throne_n of_o his_o judgement_n for_o a_o advocate_n be_v to_o plead_v at_o a_o bar_n before_o a_o court_n of_o judicature_n thus_o it_o be_v among_o man_n and_o for_o as_o much_o as_o our_o lord_n jesus_n be_v say_v to_o be_v a_o advocate_n with_o the_o father_n it_o be_v clear_a that_o there_o be_v a_o throne_n of_o judgement_n also_o this_o the_o prophet_n micaiah_n affirm_v say_v i_o see_v the_o lord_n sit_v upon_o a_o throne_n and_o all_o the_o host_n of_o heaven_n stand_v by_o he_o on_o the_o right_a hand_n and_o on_o the_o left_a 1_o kin._n 22.19_o 20._o sit_v upon_o a_o throne_n for_o judgement_n for_o from_o the_o lord_n as_o then_o sit_v upon_o that_o throne_n proceed_v that_o sentence_n against_o king_n ahab_n that_o he_o shall_v go_v and_o fall_v at_o ramah_n gilead_v and_o he_o do_v go_v and_o do_v need_n will_v they_o have_v of_o a_o advocate_n 1_n chr._n 21.3_o 4_o 5_o 6._o 1_o sam._n 12.13_o 14._o yea_o though_o they_o do_v sin_n yet_o if_o they_o be_v by_o christ_n so_o set_v free_a from_o the_o law_n as_o that_o it_o can_v by_o no_o mean_n take_v cognisance_n of_o their_o sin_n what_o need_n will_v they_o have_v of_o a_o advocate_n none_o at_o all_o if_o there_o be_v twenty_o place_n where_o there_o be_v assize_n keep_v in_o this_o land_n yet_o if_o i_o have_v offend_v no_o law_n what_o need_n have_v i_o of_o a_o advocate_n special_o if_o the_o judge_n be_v just_o and_o know_v i_o altogether_o as_o the_o god_n of_o heaven_n do_v but_o here_o be_v a_o judge_n that_o be_v just_a and_o here_o be_v a_o advocate_n also_o a_o advocate_n for_o the_o child_n a_o advocate_n to_o plead_v for_o a_o advocate_n as_o such_o be_v not_o of_o use_n but_o before_o a_o bar_n to_o plead_v therefore_o here_o be_v a_o offence_n and_o so_o a_o law_n break_v by_o the_o saint_n as_o well_o as_o other_o that_o be_v the_o second_o thing_n 3._o as_o the_o text_n
