they_o the_o use_n first_o this_o title_n of_o light_n give_v to_o minister_n show_v the_o right_a use_n of_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n the_o whole_a world_n lie_v in_o darkness_n that_o be_v in_o ignorance_n under_o sin_n and_o so_o subject_a to_o damnation_n by_o nature_n now_o god_n have_v ordain_v the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n to_o be_v a_o light_n whereby_o this_o ignorance_n may_v be_v expel_v and_o they_o bring_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o of_o the_o way_n that_o lead_v unto_o life_n act._n 26._o 18._o paul_n must_v preach_v that_o both_o jew_n and_o conscience_n which_o lead_v man_n to_o god_n again_o the_o hearer_n of_o the_o word_n must_v be_v admonish_v of_o their_o duty_n from_o this_o title_n first_o if_o minister_n be_v light_n in_o regard_n of_o their_o ministry_n than_o every_o hearer_n must_v so_o apply_v his_o heart_n unto_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o word_n that_o it_o may_v enlighten_v his_o conscience_n with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o of_o his_o misery_n by_o reason_n of_o they_o as_o also_o with_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o christ_n and_o of_o the_o will_n of_o god_n which_o may_v guide_v he_o in_o obedience_n otherwise_o this_o holy_a ordinance_n turn_v to_o his_o deep_a condemnation_n second_o every_o hearer_n must_v learn_v paul_n lesson_n ephes._n 5._o 8._o you_o be_v once_o darkness_n man_n in_o this_o call_n can_v without_o great_a sin_n hide_v the_o gift_n and_o talent_n which_o god_n have_v give_v they_o for_o they_o be_v as_o light_v candle_n which_o must_v not_o be_v put_v under_o a_o bushel_n sundry_a man_n have_v heretofore_o offend_v this_o way_n as_o those_o in_o the_o primitive_a church_n who_o be_v godly_a man_n and_o well_o qualify_v for_o the_o ministry_n do_v yet_o withdraw_v themselves_o from_o public_a society_n to_o live_v in_o solitary_a place_n for_o by_o their_o gift_n they_o be_v excellent_a light_n and_o therefore_o they_o ought_v to_o have_v
work_n can_v ever_o do_v we_o must_v therefore_o account_v of_o they_o not_o as_o the_o word_n of_o man_n but_o of_o the_o everliving_a god_n yea_o this_o must_v persuade_v we_o to_o maintain_v the_o book_n of_o scripture_n against_o all_o devilish_a atheist_n that_o deny_v the_o same_o to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n second_o hereby_o we_o be_v teach_v from_o the_o bottom_n of_o our_o heart_n to_o 2_o make_v that_o petition_n for_o ourselves_o which_o christ_n teach_v in_o his_o holy_a kingdom_n prayer_n namely_o that_o he_o will_v let_v his_o kingdom_n come_v that_o be_v not_o suffer_v sin_n satan_n or_o the_o world_n to_o reign_v in_o we_o but_o by_o his_o word_n and_o spirit_n to_o rule_v in_o our_o heart_n give_v we_o grace_n to_o be_v guide_v thereby_o in_o all_o our_o way_n we_o affect_v nothing_o more_o than_o happiness_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v oftentimes_o most_o serious_o make_v this_o request_n to_o god_n prefer_v this_o estate_n with_o god_n before_o all_o pleasure_n and_o happiness_n in_o this_o world_n and_o use_v all_o good_a mean_n to_o feel_v in_o our_o heart_n the_o power_n of_o christ_n kingdom_n three_o this_o shall_v move_v we_o to_o hear_v god_n word_n with_o all_o fear_n 3_o word_n and_o reverence_n for_o by_o this_o mean_n the_o kingdom_n of_o christ_n be_v erect_v in_o we_o when_o the_o word_n of_o christ_n take_v place_n in_o our_o heart_n by_o faith_n and_o bring_v forth_o in_o our_o life_n the_o fruit_n of_o righteousness_n and_o true_a repentance_n then_o may_v we_o true_o say_v the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n be_v in_o us._n last_o christ_n ascribe_v this_o happy_a title_n of_o his_o heavenly_a kingdom_n to_o 4_o they_o that_o be_v poor_a and_o of_o a_o contrite_a heart_n do_v herein_o minister_v a_o sovereign_a poor_a remedy_n against_o all_o temptation_n from_o outward_a poverty_n and_o distress_n doubtless_o poverty_n be_v a_o grievous_a cross_n not_o only_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o want_n of_o bodily_a comfort_n but_o especial_o because_o of_o that_o contempt_n and_o reproach_n which_o in_o this_o world_n do_v hang_v upon_o it_o whereupon_o many_o do_v esteem_v their_o poverty_n as_o a_o sign_n of_o god_n reason_n of_o his_o sin_n then_o he_o be_v so_o far_o from_o have_v just_a cause_n to_o despair_v of_o god_n favour_n by_o reason_n of_o his_o poverty_n that_o on_o the_o contrary_a he_o may_v gather_v to_o his_o soul_n a_o most_o comfortable_a assurance_n from_o the_o mouth_n of_o he_o that_o can_v lie_v that_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n belong_v unto_o he_o vers._n 4._o bless_a be_v they_o that_o mourn_v for_o they_o shall_v be_v comfort_v here_o be_v christ_n second_o rule_n touch_v blessedness_n wherein_o consider_v rule_n two_o point_n first_o the_o party_n who_o be_v bless_v they_o that_o mourn_v second_o wherein_o their_o blessedness_n consist_v namely_o in_o receive_v comfort_n for_o the_o first_o by_o mourner_n we_o must_v not_o understand_v every_o one_o that_o be_v any_o way_n grieve_v but_o such_o as_o have_v just_a and_o weighty_a cause_n of_o grief_n and_o do_v therefore_o mourn_v for_o the_o word_n import_v a_o exceed_a measure_n of_o grief_n 〈◊〉_d such_o not_o bless_v that_o mourn_v under_o grievous_a distress_n for_o cain_n saul_n achitophel_n and_o judas_n be_v all_o deep_o affect_v in_o soul_n with_o their_o most_o woeful_a estate_n though_o far_o from_o this_o blessedness_n this_o rule_n then_o must_v thus_o be_v understand_v that_o they_o be_v bless_v who_o with_o their_o mourning_n for_o weighty_a cause_n of_o grief_n do_v withal_o mourn_v unto_o he_o for_o he_o be_v bless_v christ_n word_n must_v stand_v let_v thy_o distress_n be_v what_o it_o will_v if_o under_o it_o thou_o mourn_v for_o thy_o sin_n bless_v be_v thou_o we_o can_v conceive_v while_o we_o enjoy_v peace_n of_o the_o worth_n of_o this_o rule_n in_o the_o evil_a day_n neither_o do_v we_o know_v how_o near_o the_o time_n be_v wherein_o we_o shall_v have_v need_n heart_n by_o his_o ministry_n which_o be_v a_o heavy_a case_n but_o yet_o that_o say_n of_o the_o apostle_n paul_n must_v be_v remember_v that_o howsoever_o unto_o some_o his_o ministry_n be_v the_o savour_n of_o death_n yet_o 16._o unto_o god_n it_o be_v always_o the_o sweet_a savour_n of_o christ_n so_o that_o a_o minister_n mourn_v true_o for_o his_o people_n to_o see_v their_o hardness_n of_o in_o life_n and_o doctrine_n to_o get_v respect_n in_o prince_n court_n be_v much_o seek_v after_o on_o earth_n o_o then_o how_o shall_v this_o high_a respect_n with_o god_n prevail_v in_o our_o heart_n to_o incite_v we_o to_o be_v faithful_a in_o this_o call_n verse_n 20._o for_o i_o say_v unto_o you_o except_o your_o righteousness_n exceed_v the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o scribe_n and_o danger_n though_o all_o be_v one_o in_o regard_n of_o death_n some_o man_n endure_v damnation_n in_o deep_a measure_n some_o in_o lesser_a yet_o both_o be_v condemn_v but_o the_o papist_n abuse_v straw_n may_v sometime_o put_v out_o the_o eye_n though_o indeed_o the_o beam_n be_v more_o forcible_a to_o dash_v it_o quite_o out_o and_o so_o do_v small_a sin_n wound_v the_o conscience_n and_o damn_v the_o soul_n though_o great_a sin_n do_v more_o deep_o wound_v the_o conscience_n and_o plunge_v the_o same_o into_o hell_n small_a and_o great_a sin_n both_o destroy_v the_o soul_n though_o in_o a_o different_a degree_n the_o very_a mote_n be_v deadly_a sin_n though_o in_o nature_n the_o beam_n be_v more_o mortal_a this_o distinction_n they_o borrow_v from_o former_a age_n but_o abuse_v the_o primitive_a church_n from_o whence_o they_o have_v it_o for_o the_o ancient_a father_n call_v some_o sin_n venial_a not_o because_o they_o venial_a deserve_v not_o death_n but_o because_o they_o for_o his_o action_n &_o speech_n if_o it_o may_v be_v we_o must_v always_o expound_v they_o in_o the_o better_a part_n if_o we_o can_v defend_v a_o man_n do_v yet_o we_o must_v excuse_v his_o meaning_n if_o we_o can_v excuse_v his_o intent_n yet_o we_o must_v think_v the_o best_a of_o his_o conscience_n if_o we_o can_v excuse_v his_o conscience_n yet_o we_o must_v judge_v it_o to_o be_v but_o a_o sin_n of_o ignorance_n if_o we_o can_v so_o do_v yet_o we_o must_v think_v that_o it_o be_v do_v in_o some_o grievous_a temptation_n and_o that_o if_o we_o ourselves_o have_v be_v in_o holy_a scripture_n diligent_o not_o by_o private_a study_n only_o but_o by_o conference_n with_o the_o godly_a second_o let_v he_o in_o true_a humility_n of_o heart_n pray_v unto_o god_n for_o the_o illumination_n of_o his_o spirit_n whereby_o he_o may_v in_o mind_n right_o conceive_v of_o the_o truth_n embrace_v it_o by_o faith_n in_o his_o heart_n and_o honour_v it_o by_o obedience_n in_o his_o dangerous_a hindrance_n to_o true_a religion_n that_o heretical_a book_n may_v be_v public_o sell_v to_o any_o one_o that_o will_v buy_v they_o without_o due_a consideration_n whether_o the_o party_n have_v gift_n to_o discern_v of_o truth_n from_o falsehood_n in_o the_o popish_a church_n they_o be_v more_o careful_a they_o permit_v not_o a_o man_n to_o read_v a_o heretic_n book_n as_o they_o call_v we_o protestant_n without_o leave_n and_o that_o under_o a_o great_a penalty_n which_o be_v severe_o inflict_v upon_o offender_n that_o way_n v._o instruct._n this_o commandment_n also_o show_v love_v and_o serve_v god_n in_o the_o work_n of_o brotherly_a love_n three_o to_o have_v the_o heart_n addict_v to_o this_o or_o that_o sin_n or_o sin_n whether_o secret_a or_o open_a in_o regard_n he_o be_v a_o severe_a judge_n against_o all_o iniquity_n ii_o this_o show_n that_o christ_n prefer_v a_o honest_a and_o godly_a life_n above_o life_n most_o worthy_a gift_n even_o before_o the_o
