be_v do_v four_o why_o be_v this_o a_o necessary_a duty_n five_o why_o be_v it_o a_o constant_a duty_n q._n 1._o what_o be_v mean_v by_o the_o body_n and_o why_o be_v it_o so_o call_v a._n body_n here_o signifi_v the_o same_o thing_n with_o flesh_n in_o the_o forego_n part_n of_o the_o text_n corrupt_a nature_n or_o the_o corruption_n of_o nature_n natural_a corruption_n that_o sin_n we_o all_o bring_v into_o the_o world_n with_o we_o in_o we_o which_o be_v call_v the_o body_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o flesh_n col._n 2.11_o in_o who_o also_o you_o be_v circumcise_v with_o the_o circumcision_n make_v without_o hand_n in_o put_v off_o the_o body_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o be_v term_v the_o body_n of_o sin_n rom._n 6.6_o know_v this_o that_o our_o old_a man_n be_v crucify_v with_o he_o that_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n may_v be_v destroy_v where_o by_o our_o old_a man_n and_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n the_o same_o thing_n be_v understand_v our_o old_a man_n corrupt_a nature_n be_v the_o body_n of_o sin_n it_o be_v altogether_o make_v up_o of_o sin_n it_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o sin_n this_o also_o be_v that_o the_o apostle_n call_v the_o body_n of_o this_o death_n rom._n 7.24_o o_o wretched_a man_n that_o i_o be_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o the_o body_n of_o this_o death_n or_o as_o it_o may_v be_v read_v from_o this_o body_n of_o death_n but_o why_o be_v the_o corruption_n of_o nature_n call_v the_o body_n a._n for_o the_o same_o reason_n before_o give_v why_o it_o be_v call_v the_o flesh_n and_o beside_o those_o corrupt_a nature_n may_v be_v call_v the_o body_n for_o these_o reason_n follow_v 1._o the_o body_n have_v many_o part_n and_o member_n which_o be_v unite_v make_v one_o body_n together_o and_o each_o of_o those_o member_n differ_v the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o in_o their_o proper_a nature_n and_o use_n rom._n 12.4_o we_o have_v many_o member_n in_o one_o body_n and_o all_o member_n have_v not_o the_o same_o office_n so_o be_v the_o mystical_a body_n of_o christ_n his_o church_n and_o thus_o be_v it_o with_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n it_o have_v divers_a part_n and_o member_n and_o therefore_o may_v be_v call_v in_o that_o place_n to_o the_o colossian_n even_o now_o cite_v the_o body_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o flesh_n there_o be_v pride_n hatred_n hypocrisy_n covetousness_n unbelief_n with_o many_o more_o all_o which_o be_v as_o member_n of_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n there_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o union_n between_o they_o they_o all_o together_o make_v one_o corrupt_a nature_n and_o each_o of_o they_o differ_v in_o the_o proper_a nature_n thereof_o and_o in_o its_o work_n or_o act_v as_o the_o hand_n be_v one_o thing_n and_o act_n in_o one_o manner_n the_o foot_n another_o thing_n and_o act_n in_o another_o manner_n the_o eye_n differ_v from_o the_o ear_n and_o the_o ear_n from_o the_o eye_n so_o be_v it_o with_o the_o several_a part_n of_o corrupt_a nature_n and_o it_o may_v be_v observe_v as_o some_o part_n of_o the_o body_n be_v inward_a not_o ordinary_o see_v or_o easy_a to_o be_v see_v other_o be_v outward_a without_o and_o manifest_a to_o all_o so_o some_o lust_n be_v more_o secret_a and_o not_o so_o common_o or_o easy_o perceive_v as_o other_o be_v which_o daily_o show_v themselves_o as_o also_o the_o be_v and_o subsistence_n or_o life_n of_o the_o body_n lie_v chief_o in_o those_o part_n that_o be_v within_o as_o the_o heart_n liver_n lung_n which_o be_v more_o necessary_a to_o the_o body_n its_o subsist_v than_o the_o outward_a part_n as_o hand_n leg_n so_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n have_v its_o be_v principal_o in_o those_o sin_n that_o be_v more_o secret_a less_o obvious_a such_o as_o hypocrifie_n unbelief_n formality_n covetousness_n vanity_n of_o mind_n these_o be_v as_o the_o heart_n liver_n and_o lung_n of_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n it_o will_v no_o long_o subsist_v be_v there_o nothing_o of_o such_o sin_n within_o we_o whereas_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n may_v and_o oft_o do_v continue_v and_o that_o strong_a and_o lusty_a without_o some_o outward_a more_o manifest_a sin_n such_o as_o drunkenness_n adultery_n swear_v and_o such_o like_a moreover_o a_o man_n have_v all_o the_o member_n of_o his_o body_n from_o the_o womb_n though_o he_o do_v not_o use_v some_o of_o they_o so_o soon_o as_o other_o the_o child_n use_v not_o its_o tongue_n and_o leg_n so_o soon_o as_o its_o eye_n and_o ear_n though_o it_o be_v bear_v with_o they_o all_o so_o we_o bring_v all_o lust_n into_o the_o world_n with_o we_o though_o some_o show_v themselves_o and_o be_v exert_v much_o soon_o than_o other_o as_o pride_n
be_v the_o great_a enemy_n of_o all_o to_o thy_o sin_n and_o they_o be_v the_o best_a friend_n of_o all_o to_o thy_o soul_n therefore_o the_o more_o any_o one_o be_v a_o friend_n to_o thy_o sin_n the_o worse_a enemy_n he_o be_v to_o thy_o soul_n and_o the_o more_o any_o one_o be_v a_o enemy_n to_o thy_o sin_n the_o better_a friend_n he_o be_v to_o thy_o soul_n do_v thou_o so_o account_v be_v so_o persuade_v this_o will_v help_v to_o the_o mortify_v thy_o sin_n for_o it_o will_v keep_v thy_o ear_n open_a to_o reproof_n and_o make_v way_n for_o the_o sink_n of_o wholesome_a word_n into_o thy_o heart_n whereas_o if_o thou_o think_v he_o that_o hate_v thy_o sin_n hate_v thou_o which_o be_v too_o ordinary_a and_o he_o that_o flatter_v and_o humour_n thou_o in_o thy_o evil_a affection_n and_o so_o be_v a_o friend_n to_o they_o love_v thou_o this_o will_v keep_v thy_o sin_n alive_a and_o nourish_v it_o great_o for_o it_o will_v cause_v thou_o to_o give_v ear_n to_o those_o thing_n that_o will_v feed_v thy_o corruption_n much_o more_o may_v have_v be_v say_v and_o more_o may_v be_v speak_v afterward_o let_v thus_o much_o suffice_v at_o present_a sermon_n 4._o q._n 4._o why_o be_v it_o a_o necessary_a duty_n to_o mortify_v the_o deed_n of_o the_o body_n a._n it_o be_v most_o manifest_a that_o this_o be_v a_o necessary_a duty_n that_o there_o be_v a_o absolute_a necessity_n say_v a_o crocodile_n and_o a_o man_n seldom_o meet_v but_o one_o of_o they_o die_v for_o it_o if_o the_o man_n kill_v not_o the_o crocodile_n the_o crocodile_n will_v kill_v the_o man_n this_o be_v true_a of_o every_o deed_n of_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n either_o a_o man_n must_v kill_v it_o or_o he_o will_v be_v kill_v by_o it_o kill_z or_o be_v kill_v be_v most_o true_a as_o to_o all_o sin_n the_o word_n i_o be_o upon_o teach_v this_o be_v necessary_a to_o life_n and_o that_o must_v be_v if_o it_o be_v necessary_a to_o the_o escape_v death_n but_o to_o evince_v this_o by_o some_o particular_n first_o be_v it_o not_o necessary_a that_o a_o deadly_a disease_n be_v mortify_v you_o know_v it_o be_v it_o will_v mortify_v if_o it_o be_v not_o mortify_v but_o sin_n be_v the_o disease_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o it_o be_v deadly_a as_o the_o apostle_n james_n say_v when_o it_o be_v finish_v it_o bring_v forth_o death_n and_o as_o the_o apostle_n paul_n say_v it_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n unto_o death_n no_o disease_n whatever_o more_o deadly_a to_o the_o body_n than_o every_o unmortified_a deed_n of_o the_o flesh_n be_v to_o the_o soul_n a_o bodily_a disease_n hurt_v not_o the_o soul_n but_o a_o unmortified_a lust_n hurt_v soul_n and_o body_n with_o the_o great_a hurt_n be_v it_o not_o necessary_a then_o to_o be_v mortify_v or_o be_v it_o not_o necessary_a that_o a_o metal_n enemy_n that_o be_v near_o a_o man_n be_v slay_v if_o possible_a there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n to_o avoid_v death_n by_o his_o hand_n but_o to_o lay_v he_o dead_a at_o one_o foot_n much_o more_o be_v it_o necessary_a to_o destroy_v our_o sin_n there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n to_o escape_v death_n by_o they_o or_o no_o way_n effectual_a without_o this_o and_o no_o enemy_n hurtful_a as_o our_o lust_n unsubdued_a be_v it_o be_v indeed_o only_a sin_n unmortified_a that_o can_v do_v we_o any_o hurt_n real_a or_o abide_v hurt_v the_o world_n can_v not_o mischief_n we_o satan_n can_v not_o prejudice_v we_o be_v all_o our_o lust_n lay_v dead_a as_o they_o shall_v be_v therefore_o well_o say_v one_o of_o the_o martyr_n in_o a_o letter_n to_o his_o wife_n be_v always_o a_o enemy_n to_o the_o world_n and_o to_o the_o devil_n but_o especial_o to_o your_o own_o flesh_n your_o own_o corruption_n but_o we_o lie_v open_a to_o the_o malice_n of_o all_o enemy_n if_o any_o sin_n be_v suffer_v to_o live_v in_o we_o a_o lust_n unmortified_a be_v as_o a_o open_a door_n to_o let_v satan_n into_o our_o soul_n it_o give_v he_o hold_v of_o we_o it_o be_v as_o dry_a tinder_n whereby_o we_o may_v present_o be_v set_v on_o fire_n or_o as_o a_o barrel_n of_o gunpowder_n as_o i_o may_v say_v within_o we_o whereby_o he_o may_v come_v and_o blow_v we_o up_o if_o we_o mortify_v our_o sin_n then_o do_v we_o mortify_v the_o world_n and_o satan_n in_o their_o power_n over_o we_o but_o if_o we_o do_v not_o then_o will_v the_o world_n be_v our_o master_n and_o satan_n will_v be_v lord_n over_o we_o second_o be_v it_o not_o necessary_a that_o we_o love_v god_n and_o christ_n and_o his_o commandment_n and_o our_o own_o soul_n and_o one_o another_o but_o we_o love_v none_o of_o these_o unless_o we_o mortify_v the_o deed_n of_o the_o body_n we_o love_v not_o god_n because_o he_o hate_v those_o deed_n he_o be_v dishonour_v by_o they_o offend_v and_o provoke_v and_o his_o spirit_n be_v grieve_v and_o quench_v thereby_o jam._n 4.4_o the_o friendship_n of_o the_o world_n be_v enmity_n to_o god_n whosoever_o therefore_o will_v be_v a_o friend_n of_o the_o world_n be_v the_o enemy_n of_o god_n so_o as_o to_o every_o deed_n of_o the_o flesh_n the_o friendship_n thereof_o be_v enmity_n to_o god_n whosoever_o therefore_o be_v a_o friend_n thereof_o be_v a_o enemy_n of_o god_n nor_o do_v we_o love_v christ_n because_o the_o deed_n of_o the_o body_n put_v he_o to_o death_n and_o be_v quite_o contrary_a to_o the_o deed_n which_o he_o do_v if_o you_o love_v i_o say_v christ_n keep_v my_o commandment_n and_o if_o we_o keep_v his_o commandment_n we_o must_v needs_o break_v the_o commandment_n of_o sin_n and_o so_o mortify_v the_o deed_n of_o the_o body_n nor_o do_v we_o love_v the_o commandment_n of_o god_n and_o christ_n because_o all_o sinful_a deed_n be_v direct_o opposite_a thereto_o and_o this_o be_v one_o of_o the_o lord_n commandment_n that_o we_o mortify_v our_o sin_n yea_o every_o commandment_n imply_v this_o in_o that_o we_o can_v keep_v no_o command_n true_o hearty_o unless_o our_o lust_n be_v mortify_v nor_o do_v we_o love_v our_o own_o soul_n because_o all_o the_o deed_n of_o the_o body_n war_n against_o it_o and_o be_v destructive_a to_o it_o to_o let_v sin_n live_v quiet_o in_o we_o be_v too_o plain_o to_o hate_v our_o soul_n for_o it_o be_v to_o give_v entertainment_n to_o the_o enemy_n the_o worst_a enemy_n of_o they_o prov._n 29.24_o he_o that_o be_v partner_n with_o a_o thief_n hate_v his_o own_o soul_n he_o hear_v curse_v and_o bewray_v it_o not_o so_o do_v he_o hate_v his_o own_o soul_n who_o have_v this_o and_o that_o lust_n stir_v in_o he_o and_o destroy_v it_o not_o nor_o do_v we_o love_v or_o can_v we_o love_v one_o another_o in_o truth_n for_o true_a love_n only_o grow_v in_o a_o pure_a heart_n hence_o it_o be_v say_v 1_o pet._n 1.22_o see_v you_o have_v purify_v your_o soul_n in_o obey_v the_o truth_n through_o the_o spirit_n unto_o unfeigned_a love_n of_o the_o brethren_n see_v that_o you_o love_v one_o another_o with_o a_o pure_a heart_n fervent_o but_o no_o heart_n purity_n except_o the_o corruption_n of_o the_o heart_n be_v slay_v jam._n 4.1_o from_o whence_o come_v war_n and_o fight_n among_o you_o he_o mean_v quarrel_n strife_n and_o contention_n which_o be_v cause_v by_o the_o old_a man_n the_o body_n of_o sin_n be_v they_o be_v as_o partner_n with_o their_o corruption_n who_o seek_v not_o its_o destruction_n therefore_o according_a to_o all_o the_o deed_n of_o our_o corruption_n will_v the_o lord_n render_v to_o we_o in_o that_o day_n if_o we_o mortify_v they_o not_o but_o o_o alas_o what_o a_o recompense_n what_o woe_n what_o sore_a punishment_n when_o god_n even_o the_o most_o high_a and_o almighty_a one_o himself_o and_o that_o in_o the_o day_n of_o wrath_n shall_v render_v to_o a_o poor_a creature_n a_o miserable_a man_n according_a to_o all_o the_o bring_v no_o more_o vain_a oblation_n incense_n be_v a_o abomination_n to_o i_o the_o new_a moon_n and_o sabbath_n the_o call_n of_o assembly_n i_o can_v away_o with_o it_o be_v iniquity_n the_o solemn_a meeting_n your_o new_a moon_n and_o your_o appointted_a feast_n my_o soul_n hate_v they_o be_v a_o trouble_n unto_o i_o i_o be_o weary_a to_o hear_v they_o why_o because_o their_o lust_n be_v unmortified_a therefore_o it_o be_v say_v v._o 16._o wash_v you_o make_v you_o clean_o put_v away_o the_o evil_a of_o your_o do_n from_o before_o my_o eye_n cease_v to_o do_v evil_a and_o no_o wonder_n for_o if_o our_o lust_n be_v let_v alone_o and_o entertain_v as_o friend_n not_o deal_v with_o as_o enemy_n then_o be_v not_o our_o heart_n upright_o with_o god_n we_o be_v no_o better_a than_o hypocrite_n in_o all_o that_o we_o do_v corruption_n live_v and_o prevail_v keep_v our_o heart_n from_o god_n it_o fetter_n imprison_v and_o shackle_v our_o soul_n that_o they_o can_v follow_v after_o god_n every_o lust_n any_o one_o sin_n not_o mortify_v it_o do_v bind_v a_o man_n hand_n and_o foot_n as_o to_o any_o right_a performance_n to_o god_n so_o it_o will_v be_v most_o just_a for_o christ_n to_o say_v to_o all_o who_o sin_n be_v not_o mortify_v as_o he_o foretell_v we_o he_o will_v say_v take_v they_o bound_v they_o hand_n and_o foot_n and_o cast_v they_o into_o outer_a darkness_n because_o they_o suffer_v themselves_o as_o if_o christ_n shall_v say_v to_o be_v take_v and_o bind_v hand_n and_o foot_n by_o their_o corruption_n and_o will_v not_o endeavour_v by_o destroy_v they_o to_o set_v themselves_o at_o liberty_n that_o they_o may_v walk_v in_o the_o light_n therefore_o take_v they_o you_o executioner_n of_o my_o wrath_n take_v they_o and_o bound_v they_o be_v most_o holy_a shall_v god_n grant_v we_o communion_n with_o himself_o while_o any_o of_o our_o corruption_n be_v harbour_v and_o not_o wound_v not_o bring_v under_o but_o have_v dominion_n in_o we_o he_o must_v have_v fellowship_n with_o they_o even_o with_o our_o sin_n which_o be_v impossible_a 2_o cor._n 6.14_o 15._o what_o fellowship_n have_v righteousness_n with_o unrighteousness_n and_o what_o communion_n have_v light_a with_o darkness_n and_o what_o concord_n have_v christ_n with_o belial_n we_o be_v exhort_v to_o have_v no_o fellowship_n with_o the_o unfruitful_a work_n of_o darkness_n but_o we_o have_v fellowship_n with_o the_o deed_n of_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n if_o we_o comply_v with_o they_o and_o mortify_v they_o not_o and_o we_o thereby_o have_v communion_n with_o satan_n it_o be_v as_o sure_a some_o have_v communion_n with_o satan_n in_o this_o world_n as_o it_o be_v that_o some_o have_v fellowship_n with_o god_n and_o who_o be_v they_o who_o have_v communion_n with_o satan_n but_o such_o who_o heart_n be_v in_o league_n with_o their_o sin_n therefore_o such_o can_v have_v no_o fellowship_n with_o god_n nor_o can_v it_o be_v that_o god_n shall_v be_v a_o honour_n to_o a_o man_n theodosius_n the_o emperor_n be_v high_o commend_v for_o that_o when_o he_o be_v move_v to_o execute_v one_o who_o revile_v he_o he_o say_v that_o be_v it_o in_o his_o still_o grow_v worse_o as_o to_o you_o sin_n itself_o can_v be_v of_o any_o good_a use_n there_o be_v no_o one_o who_o will_v be_v please_v by_o your_o spare_a sin_n unless_o you_o shall_v take_v and_o perseverance_n as_o every_o man_n live_v till_o he_o die_v so_o that_o man_n who_o live_v after_o the_o flesh_n and_o shall_v die_v he_o do_v live_v after_o it_o till_o he_o die_v for_o if_o
