that_o be_v but_o one_o whereas_o other_o byway_n be_v many_o for_o whosoever_o be_v not_o a_o worthy_a receiver_n must_v needs_o be_v a_o unworthy_a one_o whether_o he_o come_v too_o short_a or_o go_v too_o far_o worthy_o who_o receive_v worthy_o now_o such_o only_o receive_v this_o sacrament_n worthy_o who_o both_o see_v and_o acknowledge_v their_o own_o unworthiness_n wherein_o there_o be_v first_o of_o all_o knowledge_n require_v knowledge_n 1_o such_o as_o have_v a_o competent_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n which_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o all_o other_o grace_n and_o that_o be_v to_o be_v consider_v two_o way_n first_o more_o general_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o principal_a point_n of_o christian_a religion_n receiver_n seven_o thing_n to_o be_v know_v of_o every_o worthy_a receiver_n second_o more_o particular_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o this_o sacrament_n touch_v the_o first_o of_o these_o seven_o particular_n must_v be_v know_v of_o every_o worthy_a receiver_n first_o that_z the_o lord_n have_v reveal_v in_o his_o worde_n what_o we_o ought_v both_o to_o know_v and_o acknowledge_v concern_v his_o will_n that_o all_o thing_n therein_o contain_v be_v true_a which_o whosoever_o know_v not_o can_v be_v in_o the_o estate_n of_o grace_n much_o less_o can_v be_v a_o worthy_a receiver_n of_o this_o sacrament_n second_o touch_v god_n himself_o the_o worthy_a receiver_n must_v know_v that_o there_o be_v but_o one_o god_n who_o be_v of_o a_o spiritual_a nature_n most_o wise_a just_a mighty_a and_o merciful_a who_o have_v ordain_v all_o thing_n create_v all_o thing_n and_o govern_v all_o thing_n according_a to_o his_o own_o will_n and_o that_o this_o god_n have_v reveal_v himself_o in_o three_o person_n father_n son_n and_o holy_a ghost_n and_o that_o these_o three_o be_v but_o one_o god_n three_o concern_v man_n the_o worthy_a receiver_n must_v know_v that_o god_n in_o the_o beginning_n create_v man_n in_o a_o most_o happy_a estate_n perfect_a in_o soul_n and_o body_n after_o his_o own_o image_n who_o by_o his_o own_o disobedience_n lose_v his_o own_o happiness_n procure_v god_n curse_n and_o make_v both_o himself_o and_o posterity_n subject_a unto_o all_o misery_n four_o for_o ourselves_o we_o must_v acknowledge_v ourselves_o to_o be_v corrupt_v seed_n of_o corrupt_a parent_n conceive_a and_o bear_v in_o sin_n and_o bring_v forth_o in_o iniquity_n whereby_o we_o deserve_v god_n curse_v and_o everlasting_a condemnation_n five_o concern_v our_o remedy_n the_o worthy_a receiver_n must_v know_v that_o neither_o himself_n nor_o any_o creature_n in_o heaven_n or_o earth_n can_v free_v he_o from_o that_o curse_a estate_n but_o that_o god_n the_o father_n of_o his_o mere_a love_n and_o tender_a compassion_n without_o any_o desert_n of_o man_n do_v send_v his_o own_o son_n to_o take_v our_o nature_n upon_o he_o and_o in_o the_o same_o to_o work_v our_o redemption_n and_o to_o reconcile_v we_o unto_o god_n six_o the_o worthy_a receiver_n must_v know_v that_o forasmuch_o as_o his_o redemption_n be_v wrought_v by_o christ_n we_o must_v have_v some_o mean_n to_o make_v that_o we_o which_o be_v christ_n and_o that_o be_v only_a faith_n for_o it_o be_v faith_n that_o apprehend_v and_o apply_v christ_n and_o his_o obedience_n and_o make_v the_o same_o we_o as_o we_o have_v wrought_v it_o ourselves_o and_o last_o of_o all_o the_o worthy_a receiver_n must_v know_v that_o this_o faith_n â—s_v not_o in_o ourselves_o but_o it_o be_v the_o â—ree_a gift_n of_o god_n wrought_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o
god_n by_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n and_o that_o god_n have_v appoint_v mean_n as_o for_o the_o beget_n of_o faith_n so_o for_o the_o strengthen_n and_o daily_o increase_v of_o the_o same_o in_o we_o such_o as_o be_v the_o word_n sacrament_n prayer_n etc._n etc._n second_o beside_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christian_a religion_n in_o general_a sacrament_n rom._n 10.2_o particular_o in_o this_o sacrament_n there_o be_v further_o require_v in_o all_o worthy_a receiver_n a_o particular_a knowledge_n of_o this_o sacrament_n the_o nature_n of_o it_o as_o namely_o what_o he_o do_v receive_v how_o he_o do_v receive_v and_o why_o he_o do_v receive_v all_o which_o we_o have_v speak_v of_o in_o the_o former_a sermon_n use_v now_o then_o my_o brethren_n be_v this_o knowledge_n to_o be_v require_v in_o every_o worthy_a receiver_n then_o may_v we_o by_o this_o first_o property_n perceive_v what_o a_o infinite_a number_n come_v to_o the_o lord_n table_n unworthy_o and_o in_o so_o do_v eat_v and_o drink_v their_o own_o damnation_n for_o alas_o how_o few_o do_v true_o know_v these_o thing_n but_o be_v altogether_o ignorant_a of_o these_o main_a and_o fundamental_a point_n of_o christian_a religion_n without_o the_o knowledge_n whereof_o none_o can_v be_v save_v much_o less_o receive_v this_o sacrament_n worthy_o this_o be_v so_o we_o see_v what_o great_a need_n there_o be_v for_o every_o one_o that_o will_v approach_v to_o the_o lord_n table_n to_o labour_v for_o knowledge_n and_o to_o use_v all_o holy_a help_n and_o mean_n whereby_o they_o may_v attain_v unto_o it_o be_v mean_v not_o only_o a_o give_a credit_n to_o all_o those_o thing_n we_o speak_v of_o before_o in_o knowledge_n but_o a_o certain_a assurance_n of_o the_o heart_n in_o every_o child_n of_o god_n and_o worthy_a receiver_n of_o this_o sacrament_n that_o all_o those_o promise_n which_o god_n have_v make_v unto_o his_o child_n pertain_v unto_o he_o now_o this_o faith_n stand_v in_o two_o thing_n as_o knowledge_n do_v for_o the_o faith_n that_o be_v require_v of_o the_o worthy_a receiver_n must_v take_v hold_v upon_o christ_n as_o he_o be_v offer_v in_o the_o preach_a of_o the_o gospel_n and_o so_o of_o his_o death_n obedience_n and_o resurrection_n whereby_o he_o come_v to_o have_v assurance_n that_o his_o sin_n be_v forgive_v he_o and_o he_o receive_v into_o favour_n but_o beside_o this_o there_o be_v another_o degree_n of_o faith_n require_v in_o this_o sacrament_n and_o that_o be_v as_o christ_n jesus_n have_v and_o do_v most_o true_o offer_v himself_o unto_o the_o true_a believer_n in_o this_o sacrament_n so_o the_o worthy_a receiver_n must_v be_v assure_v thereof_o and_o according_o take_v these_o outward_a sign_n as_o seal_n and_o pledge_n whereby_o his_o faith_n become_v more_o &_o more_o confirm_v then_o by_o the_o bare_a promise_n make_v in_o the_o gospel_n use_v whereby_o again_o we_o may_v see_v how_o many_o more_o unworthy_a receiver_n there_o be_v see_v that_o as_o the_o great_a part_n want_v knowledge_n so_o of_o those_o that_o have_v knowledge_n the_o great_a part_n of_o they_o want_n faith_n as_o â—heir_a life_n do_v sufficient_o declare_v repentance_n 3_o repentance_n the_o last_o property_n that_o i_o will_v stand_v upon_o be_v repentance_n which_o proceed_v from_o a_o true_a faith_n and_o be_v most_o necessary_o require_v of_o all_o those_o that_o worthy_o receive_v this_o sacrament_n for_o mark_v i_o pray_v you_o whereas_o in_o this_o sacrament_n we_o be_v couple_v with_o christ_n and_o be_v make_v one_o with_o he_o of_o necessity_n now_o we_o must_v become_v new_a creature_n and_o be_v change_v inasmuch_o as_o we_o be_v now_o knit_v unto_o christ_n and_o we_o must_v now_o part_n with_o the_o practice_n of_o sin_n for_o the_o practice_n of_o godliness_n else_o how_o can_v we_o have_v any_o fellowship_n with_o christ_n for_o to_o saâ—_n we_o have_v fellowship_n with_o chriâ—_n &_o to_o walk_v in_o darkness_n we_o lyâ—_n the_o flesh_n with_o the_o affection_n and_o lust_n and_o sure_o this_o true_a repentance_n extend_v itself_o very_o far_o even_o to_o the_o obedience_n of_o the_o whole_a law_n of_o god_n first_o to_o the_o hate_v and_o forsake_v of_o all_o thing_n that_o be_v evil_a and_o forbid_a in_o the_o law_n as_o also_o in_o the_o love_n and_o practise_v of_o all_o that_o which_o god_n require_v and_o here-hence_o do_v flow_v all_o those_o grace_n of_o god_n which_o do_v so_o adorn_v his_o servant_n as_o love_v to_o god_n and_o his_o child_n humility_n meekness_n patience_n etc._n etc._n which_o such_o as_o be_v not_o knit_v unto_o christ_n be_v stranger_n unto_o and_o altogether_o unacquainted_a with_o whereby_o as_o by_o the_o former_a we_o may_v see_v how_o many_o more_o be_v cut_v off_o from_o the_o number_n of_o worthy_a receiver_n even_o all_o ungodly_a person_n who_o though_o they_o have_v never_o so_o much_o knowledge_n and_o boast_v never_o so_o much_o of_o their_o faith_n yet_o inasmuch_o as_o there_o appear_v not_o in_o their_o life_n true_a repentance_n for_o sin_n which_o will_v show_v itself_o ever_o by_o the_o effect_n of_o it_o certain_a it_o be_v that_o their_o knowledge_n be_v but_o braine-knowledge_n not_o experimental_a and_o sanctify_a knowledge_n and_o their_o faith_n they_o boast_v of_o presumption_n and_o not_o faith_n and_o thus_o as_o short_o as_o i_o can_v i_o have_v show_v what_o be_v require_v to_o worthy_a receive_n whereby_o it_o may_v most_o evident_o appear_v what_o it_o be_v to_o receive_v unworthy_o for_o whatsoever_o be_v not_o agreeable_a unto_o this_o must_v needs_o be_v unworthy_a receive_n and_o such_o do_v eat_v and_o drink_v unto_o their_o own_o damnation_n of_o which_o sort_n be_v all_o those_o that_o be_v ignorant_a of_o these_o necessary_a point_n of_o christian_n religion_n unworthy_o who_o receive_v unworthy_o who_o come_v in_o their_o old_a sin_n ignorance_n ignorant_a 1_o such_o as_o be_v ignorant_a blindness_n unbelief_n &c_n &c_n who_o as_o they_o be_v ignorant_a of_o god_n word_n and_o will_n so_o they_o know_v nothing_o of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o this_o sacrament_n but_o be_v extreme_a such_o ignorant_a soul_n â—ust_z needs_o come_v without_o the_o â—edding_n garment_n and_o so_o eat_v &_o â—rinke_v their_o own_o damnation_n unâ—sse_v they_o repent_v use_v 1_o which_o must_v serve_v to_o admoâ—sh_v all_o ignorant_a people_n and_o â—ore_o blind_a ignorant_a soul_n to_o â—e_a heed_n that_o they_o do_v not_o ignorant_o rush_v upon_o their_o own_o destruction_n and_o eat_v and_o
