stead_n he_o that_o can_v deny_v this_o be_v perverse_a to_o the_o high_a degree_n and_o i_o fear_v almost_o beyond_o the_o possibility_n of_o be_v convince_v and_o the_o argument_n from_o these_o two_o text_n be_v so_o much_o the_o strong_a because_o we_o do_v not_o here_o reason_n mere_o from_o the_o phrase_n and_o expression_n but_o from_o the_o main_a scope_n of_o our_o saviour_n discourse_n in_o the_o one_o and_o of_o st._n paul_n in_o the_o other_o for_o the_o design_n of_o both_o be_v to_o recommend_v the_o superlative_a love_n of_o christ_n to_o we_o above_o the_o great_a love_n that_o ever_o any_o man_n express_v to_o another_o the_o high_a pitch_n that_o human_a affection_n do_v ever_o rise_v to_o be_v for_o a_o man_n to_o lay_v down_o his_o life_n for_o his_o friend_n but_o the_o son_n of_o god_n lay_v down_o his_o life_n for_o his_o enemy_n scarce_o say_v st._n paul_n will_v one_o lay_v down_o his_o life_n for_o a_o righteous_a man_n that_o be_v for_o one_o who_o be_v but_o strict_o just_a and_o honest_a and_o do_v no_o body_n wrong_v but_o for_o a_o good_a man_n that_o be_v for-one_a that_o be_v kind_a and_o beneficial_a to_o all_o and_o have_v oblige_v mankind_n by_o great_a benefit_n some_o one_o may_v be_v find_v that_o will_v lay_v down_o his_o life_n to_o save_v the_o life_n of_o such_o a_o person_n but_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n have_v go_v far_o beyond_o this_o he_o die_v for_o sinner_n for_o those_o who_o be_v neither_o good_a man_n nor_o righteous_a but_o god_n commend_v his_o love_n to_o we_o in_o that_o whilst_o we_o be_v yet_o sinner_n christ_n die_v for_o we_o now_o where_o do_v the_o force_n of_o this_o argument_n lie_v if_o not_o in_o this_o that_o christ_n have_v do_v that_o for_o we_o who_o be_v enemy_n and_o sinner_n which_o some_o very_a few_o person_n in_o the_o world_n have_v do_v for_o their_o friend_n or_o for_o some_o very_o eminent_o good_a man_n and_o what_o be_v that_o why_o they_o have_v lay_v down_o their_o life_n in_o their_o stead_n and_o so_o christ_n have_v do_v for_o we_o this_o seem_v to_o be_v so_o very_a plain_n that_o i_o do_v not_o see_v how_o the_o force_n of_o this_o argument_n be_v possible_a to_o be_v avoid_v it_o be_v evident_a then_o from_o scripture_n that_o christ_n die_v not_o only_o for_o our_o advantage_n but_o in_o our_o stead_n as_o true_o and_o real_o as_o any_o man_n ever_o do_v or_o can_v die_v for_o another_o who_o lay_v down_o his_o own_o life_n to_o save_v another_o from_o death_n for_o if_o christ_n have_v not_o die_v we_o have_v perish_v everlasting_o and_o because_o he_o die_v we_o be_v save_v from_o eternal_a death_n and_o misery_n and_o though_o this_o be_v no_o where_o in_o scripture_n speak_v of_o by_o the_o name_n or_o term_v of_o satisfaction_n yet_o it_o be_v say_v to_o be_v the_o price_n of_o our_o redemption_n which_o sure_o be_v the_o same_o thing_n in_o effect_n with_o satisfaction_n for_o as_o we_o be_v sinner_n we_o be_v liable_a and_o as_o i_o may_v say_v indebt_v to_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n and_o the_o son_n of_o god_n by_o his_o death_n and_o suffering_n in_o our_o nature_n have_v discharge_v this_o obligation_n and_o pay_v this_o debt_n for_o we_o which_o discharge_v since_o it_o be_v obtain_v for_o we_o by_o the_o shed_n of_o christ_n blood_n and_o the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o that_o without_o shed_v of_o blood_n there_o be_v no_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o since_o god_n be_v gracious_o please_v to_o accept_v of_o it_o for_o the_o debt_n which_o we_o owe_v to_o his_o justice_n and_o to_o declare_v himself_o full_o please_v and_o content_v with_o it_o why_o it_o may_v not_o proper_o enough_o be_v call_v payment_n or_o satisfaction_n i_o confess_v i_o be_o not_o able_a to_o understand_v man_n may_v eternal_o wrangle_v about_o any_o thing_n but_o what_o a_o frivolous_a contention_n what_o a_o trifle_n in_o serious_a matter_n what_o barratry_a in_o divinity_n be_v this_o not_o that_o god_n be_v angry_a with_o his_o son_n when_o he_o thus_o lay_v on_o he_o the_o iniquity_n of_o we_o all_o no_o he_o be_v always_o well_o please_v with_o he_o and_o never_o better_o than_o when_o he_o frequent_o compare_v and_o in_o point_n of_o virtue_n and_o efficacy_n to_o take_v away_o sin_n infinite_o prefer_v to_o it_o now_o the_o nature_n and_o design_n of_o expiatory_a sacrifice_n be_v plain_o this_o to_o substitute_v one_o live_v creature_n to_o suffer_v and_o die_v instead_o of_o another_o so_o that_o what_o the_o sinner_n deserve_v to_o have_v suffer_v be_v suppose_v to_o be_v do_v to_o the_o sacrifice_n that_o be_v it_o be_v slay_v to_o make_v a_o atonement_n for_o the_o sinner_n and_o though_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n to_o hope_v for_o any_o such_o effect_n from_o the_o blood_n of_o bull_n or_o of_o goat_n or_o of_o any_o other_o live_v creature_n that_o be_v wont_a to_o be_v offer_v up_o in_o sacrifice_n yet_o that_o both_o jew_n and_o heathen_a do_v expect_v and_o hope_v for_o it_o be_v so_o very_o evident_a that_o it_o can_v without_o extreme_a ignorance_n or_o obstinacy_n be_v deny_v but_o this_o expectation_n how_o unreasonable_a soever_o plain_o show_v it_o to_o have_v be_v the_o common_a apprehension_n of_o mankind_n in_o all_o age_n that_o god_n will_v not_o be_v appease_v nor_o shall_v sin_n be_v pardon_v
without_o suffer_v but_o yet_o so_o that_o man_n general_o conceive_v good_a hope_n that_o upon_o the_o repentance_n of_o sinner_n god_n will_v accept_v of_o a_o vicarious_a punishment_n that_o be_v to_o take_v away_o sin_n by_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o himself_o this_o be_v the_o great_a virtue_n and_o efficacy_n of_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o christ_n that_o what_o ever_o be_v expect_v from_o any_o other_o sacrifice_n either_o by_o jew_n or_o heathen_n be_v real_o effect_v by_o this_o this_o be_v plain_o signify_v by_o the_o jewish_a passover_n wherein_o the_o lamb_n be_v slay_v and_o the_o sinner_n do_v escape_v and_o be_v pass_v by_o in_o allusion_n whereto_o st._n paul_n make_v no_o scruple_n to_o call_v christ_n our_o passover_n or_o paschal_n lamb_n who_o be_v slay_v that_o we_o may_v escape_v christ_n our_o passover_n say_v he_o be_v slay_v 7._o or_o offer_v for_o we_o that_o be_v he_o by_o the_o gracious_a appointment_n of_o god_n be_v substitute_v to_o suffer_v all_o that_o in_o our_o stead_n which_o the_o paschal_n lamb_n be_v suppose_v to_o suffer_v for_o the_o sinner_n and_o this_o be_v likewise_o signify_v by_o the_o sinner_n lay_v his_o hand_n upon_o the_o sacrifice_n that_o be_v to_o be_v slay_v thereby_o as_o it_o be_v transfer_v the_o punishment_n which_o be_v due_a to_o himself_o upon_o the_o sacrifice_n that_o be_v to_o be_v slay_v and_o offer_v up_o for_o so_o god_n tell_v moses_n that_o the_o sinner_n who_o come_v to_o offer_v a_o expiatory_a sacrifice_n shall_v do_v he_o 4._o shall_v put_v his_o hand_n upon_o the_o head_n of_o the_o sacrifice_n and_o again_o 28._o christ_n say_v he_o be_v once_o offer_v to_o bear_v the_o sin_n of_o many_o plain_o allude_v to_o the_o sacrifice_n under_o the_o law_n which_o do_v as_o it_o be_v first_o appearance_n and_o his_o second_o christ_n say_v our_o apostle_n be_v once_o 28._o offer_v to_o bear_v our_o sin_n but_o unto_o they_o that_o look_v for_o he_o he_o shall_v appear_v a_o second_o time_n without_o sin_n unto_o salvation_n why_o do_v he_o not_o appear_v the_o first_o time_n without_o sin_n yes_o certain_o as_o to_o any_o inherent_a guilt_n for_o the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o he_o have_v no_o sin_n what_o then_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o opposition_n that_o at_o his_o first_o come_v he_o bear_v our_o sin_n but_o at_o his_o second_o come_v he_o shall_v appear_v and_o without_o some_o remarkable_a testimony_n of_o his_o severe_a displeasure_n against_o it_o and_o therefore_o his_o great_a goodness_n and_o compassion_n to_o mankind_n devise_v this_o way_n to_o save_v the_o sinner_n without_o give_v the_o least_o countenance_n and_o encouragement_n to_o sin_n for_o god_n to_o think_v of_o save_v we_o any_o way_n be_v excessive_a goodness_n and_o mercy_n but_o to_o think_v of_o do_v it_o in_o this_o way_n by_o substitute_v his_o dear_o belove_a son_n to_o suffer_v in_o our_o stead_n be_v a_o condescension_n so_o very_a amaze_a that_o if_o god_n have_v not_o be_v please_v of_o his_o own_o goodness_n to_o stoop_v to_o it_o it_o have_v almost_o be_v blasphemy_n in_o man_n to_o have_v think_v of_o it_o or_o desire_v it_o second_o how_o can_v our_o sin_n be_v say_v to_o have_v 2d_o be_v forgive_v free_o if_o the_o pardon_n of_o they_o be_v purchase_v at_o so_o dear_a a_o rate_n and_o so_o mighty_a a_o price_n be_v pay_v for_o it_o in_o answer_n to_o this_o i_o desire_v these_o two_o thing_n may_v be_v consider_v 1_o sy_n that_o it_o be_v a_o wonderful_a grace_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n to_o admit_v of_o this_o translation_n of_o the_o punishment_n which_o be_v due_a to_o we_o and_o to_o accept_v of_o the_o suffering_n of_o another_o in_o our_o stead_n and_o for_o our_o benefit_n when_o he_o may_v just_o have_v exact_v it_o of_o we_o in_o our_o own_o person_n so_o that_o even_o in_o this_o respect_n we_o be_v as_o st._n paul_n say_v justify_v free_o by_o his_o grace_n through_o the_o redemption_n that_o be_v in_o jesus_n
