thessalonica_n concern_v the_o state_n of_o the_o dead_a of_o such_o as_o have_v lay_v down_o their_o life_n for_o the_o sake_n of_o christ_n and_o indeed_o of_o all_o that_o true_o believe_v in_o he_o i_o will_v not_o have_v you_o to_o be_v ignorant_a brethren_n concern_v they_o which_o be_v asleep_a it_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o great_a importance_n and_o therefore_o will_v not_o have_v you_o lie_v under_o any_o doubt_n or_o mistake_v herein_o but_o desire_v you_o may_v have_v as_o full_a a_o understanding_n of_o the_o thing_n as_o the_o gospel_n revelation_n will_v afford_v you_o 2._o the_o design_n which_o the_o apostle_n have_v in_o clear_v up_o these_o notion_n to_o they_o and_o that_o be_v to_o repress_v those_o excessive_a grief_n and_o inordinate_a sorrow_n which_o they_o have_v conceive_v upon_o the_o account_n of_o their_o depart_v friend_n for_o want_v of_o a_o right_a apprehension_n and_o steady_a belief_n hereof_o 3._o we_o have_v this_o sorrow_n more_o particular_o describe_v viz._n it_o be_v like_o they_o who_o have_v no_o hope_n such_o who_o either_o absolute_o deny_v the_o immortality_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o
certainty_n of_o a_o future_a state_n as_o the_o sadducee_n among_o the_o jew_n and_o the_o epicurean_o among_o the_o gentile_n or_o such_o who_o have_v but_o faint_a apprehension_n and_o doubtful_a guess_n thereof_o as_o the_o generality_n of_o the_o heathen_n who_o have_v no_o other_o direction_n herein_o but_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n no_o wonder_n to_o see_v such_o vent_v their_o sorrow_n in_o a_o extravagant_a manner_n when_o all_o their_o hope_n be_v terminate_v on_o this_o side_n the_o grave_a and_o when_o once_o go_v they_o fear_v there_o be_v to_o be_v no_o more_o remembrance_n of_o they_o or_o their_o friend_n for_o ever_o to_o bring_v the_o word_n down_o to_o our_o purpose_n i_o resolve_v they_o into_o these_o three_o proposition_n 1._o that_o there_o be_v a_o certain_a measure_n of_o sorrow_n allowable_a to_o a_o christian_a at_o the_o death_n of_o his_o friend_n 2._o that_o excessive_a or_o immoderate_a sorrow_n be_v the_o loss_n never_o so_o heavy_a be_v much_o unbecoming_a the_o christian_a temper_n and_o very_o unsuitable_a to_o those_o hope_n which_o he_o profess_v to_o have_v i_o will_v not_o have_v you_o sorrow_n like_o other_o that_o have_v no_o hope_n 3._o that_o a_o right_a understanding_n and_o a_o due_a consideration_n of_o what_o our_o religion_n offer_v in_o such_o case_n be_v the_o most_o effectual_a method_n for_o the_o suppress_n of_o all_o those_o inordinate_a passion_n this_o i_o gather_v from_o the_o former_a part_n of_o the_o text_n i_o will_v not_o have_v you_o to_o be_v ignorant_a concern_v they_o that_o be_v asleep_a as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v have_v you_o but_o right_a apprehension_n of_o what_o the_o gospel_n assure_v you_o herein_o you_o will_v not_o be_v thus_o sorrowful_a to_o begin_v with_o the_o first_o 1._o that_o there_o be_v a_o certain_a measure_n of_o grief_n and_o sorrow_n allow_v to_o the_o christian_a at_o the_o death_n of_o his_o friend_n this_o be_v clear_o employ_v in_o the_o word_n for_o the_o apostle_n by_o tell_v they_o that_o they_o shall_v not_o sorrow_n as_o those_o that_o have_v no_o hope_n do_v at_o the_o same_o time_n intimate_v there_o must_v be_v some_o allowance_n make_v that_o christianity_n do_v not_o design_n to_o extirpate_v our_o passion_n but_o only_o to_o moderate_v and_o correct_v they_o to_o keep_v they_o from_o those_o excess_n which_o will_v disparage_v our_o reason_n and_o put_v the_o soul_n into_o a_o unquiet_a state_n it_o be_v true_a there_o be_v no_o command_n in_o the_o gospel_n for_o this_o because_o the_o practice_n hereof_o have_v no_o inherent_a goodness_n in_o it_o but_o argue_v rather_o the_o debility_n and_o weakness_n of_o humane_a nature_n however_o the_o lawfulness_n and_o expediency_n of_o such_o a_o sorrow_n can_v in_o the_o least_o be_v doubt_v and_o this_o will_v appear_v 1._o from_o the_o example_n of_o many_o pious_a and_o devout_a person_n who_o upon_o such_o occasion_n have_v vent_v their_o grief_n without_o ever_o have_v they_o change_v upon_o they_o as_o crime_n or_o indecency_n we_o find_v jacob_n rent_v his_o clothes_n put_v sackcloth_n upon_o his_o loin_n mourn_v bitter_o for_o his_o son_n many_o day_n who_o he_o the_o move_n of_o our_o heart_n which_o be_v extinguish_v our_o body_n shall_v be_v turn_v into_o ash_n and_o our_o spirit_n shall_v vanish_v as_o the_o soft_a air_n our_o time_n be_v a_o very_a shadow_n that_o pass_v away_o and_o after_o our_o end_n there_o be_v no_o return_v for_o it_o be_v fast_o seal_v so_o that_o no_o man_n come_v again_o thus_o it_o be_v with_o they_o and_o true_o it_o this_o subject_a that_o we_o may_v easy_o imagine_v they_o be_v at_o a_o loss_n and_o not_o much_o satisfy_v themselves_o in_o that_o which_o they_o teach_v the_o common_a people_n to_o believe_v insomuch_o that_o socrates_n who_o be_v as_o great_a a_o instance_n of_o virtue_n and_o learning_n as_o the_o gentile_a world_n can_v produce_v yet_o towards_o the_o latter_a end_n of_o his_o life_n that_o as_o for_o the_o mystery_n of_o god_n they_o know_v they_o not_o neither_o hope_v they_o for_o the_o wage_n of_o righteousness_n nor_o discern_v a_o reward_n for_o blameless_a soul_n and_o what_o reflection_n can_v be_v more_o dismal_a or_o amaze_a and_o therefore_o to_o prepare_v themselves_o the_o better_a for_o the_o fatal_a stroke_n they_o invent_v many_o pretty_a apothegm_n and_o alas_o they_o be_v all_o of_o they_o but_o poor_a receipt_n in_o respect_n of_o that_o sovereign_a antidote_n which_o the_o gospel_n prescribe_v to_o instance_n in_o some_o of_o their_o choice_a sometime_o they_o will_v say_v that_o death_n be_v the_o unavoidable_a fate_n of_o all_o mankind_n that_o there_o be_v no_o resist_v the_o power_n of_o it_o they_o see_v that_o wise_a man_n die_v as_o dead_a already_o as_o to_o so_o much_o of_o our_o life_n which_o be_v past_a and_o go_v for_o so_o much_o as_o we_o live_v so_o much_o we_o die_v be_v dead_a to_o the_o day_n past_a and_o that_o little_a hold_v they_o have_v be_v that_o they_o be_v admit_v into_o life_n upon_o this_o condition_n that_o they_o shall_v give_v place_n to_o other_o as_o the_o former_a generation_n do_v to_o they_o and_o therefore_o a_o piece_n of_o injustice_n to_o be_v unwilling_a to_o go_v off_o the_o stage_n when_o their_o work_n be_v do_v other_o will_v comfort_v themselves_o after_o this_o manner_n that_o death_n be_v a_o desirable_a thing_n see_v there_o be_v so_o many_o trouble_n and_o disaster_n that_o do_v attend_v we_o for_o it_o be_v no_o more_o than_o solutio_fw-la omnium_fw-la
