of the LORD our God that is before his tabernacle 30 ¶ And when Phinehas the priest and the princes of the congregation and heads of the thousands of Israel which were with him heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spake †Heb. it was good in their eyes it pleased them 31 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said unto the children of Reuben and to the children of Gad and to the children of Manasseh This day we perceive that the LORD is among us because ye have not committed this trespass against the LORD †Heb. then now ye have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the LORD 32 ¶ And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest and the princes returned from the children of Reuben and from the children of Gad out of the land of Gilead unto the land of Canaan to the children of Israel and brought them word again 33 And the thing pleased the children of Israel and the children of Israel blessed God and did not intend to go up against them in battel to destroy the land wherein the children of Reuben and Gad dwelt 34 And the chiâ—dren of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar ‖ That is A witness Ed for it shall be a witness between us that the LORD is God CHAP. Ez 44.28 I am thy part and thine inheritance among the children of Israel 21 And behold I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance for their service which they serve even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation 22 Neither must the children of Israel henceforth come nigh the tabernacle of the congregation * Heb. to die lest they bear sin †and die 23 But the Levites shall do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation and they shall bear their iniquity It shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations that among the children of Israel they have no inheritance 24 But the tithes of the children of Israel which they offer as an heave-offering unto the LORD I have given to the Levites to inherit therefore I have said unto them Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance 25 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 26 Thus speak unto the Levites and say unto them When ye take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance then ye shall offer up an heave-offering of it for the LORD even a tenth part of the tithe 27 And this your heave-offering shall be reckoned unto you as though it were the corn of the threshing-floor and as the fulness of the wine-press 28 Thus you also shall offer an heave-offering unto the LORD of all your tithes which ye receive of the children of Israel and ye shall give thereof the LORDs heave-offering to Aaron the priest 29 Out of all your gifts ye shall offer every heave-offering of the LORD of all the †Heb. sat best thereof even the hallowed part thereof out of it 30 Therefore thou shalt say unto them When ye have heaved the best thereof from it then it shall be counted unto the Levites as the increase of the threshing-floor and as the encrease of the wine press 31 And ye shall eat it in every place ye and your housholds for it is your reward for your service in the tabernacle of the congregation 32 And ye shall bear no sin by reason of it when ye have heaved from it the best of it neither shall ye pollute the holy things of the children of Israel lest ye die CHAP. he put in a basket and he put the broth in a pot and brought it out unto him under the oak and presented it 20 And the angel of God said unto him Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes and lay them upon this rock and pour out the broth And he did so 21 ¶ Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes and there rose up fire out of the rock and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes then the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight 22 And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD Gideon said Alas O Lord GOD * Ex. 33.20 Ch. 13.22 for because I have seen an angel of the LORD face to face 23 And the LORD said unto him Peace be unto thee fear not thou shalt not die 24 Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD and called it ‖ That is the LORD send peace Jehovah-shalom unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abi-ezrites 25 ¶ And it came to pass the same night that the LORD said unto him Take thy fathers young bullock ‖ Or and. even the second bullock of seven years old and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath and cut down the grove that is by it 26 And build an altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this †Heb. strong place rock ‖ Or in an orderly manner in the ordered pâ—ace and take the second bullock and offer a burnt-sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down 27 Then Gideon took ten men of his servants and did as the LORD had said unto him and so it was bâ—cause he scared hâ—s fathers houshold and the men of the city that he could not do it by day that he did it by night 28 ¶ And when the men of the city arose early in the morning behold the altar of Baal was cast down and the grove was cut down that was by it and the second bulloâ—k was offered upon the altar that was built 29 And they said one to another Who hath done this thing And when they enquired and asked they said Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing 30 Then the men of the city said unto Joash Bring out thy son that he may die because 〈◊〉 hâ—th caâ—t down the altar of Baal and because he hath cut down the grove that was by it 31 And Joash said unto all that stood against him Will ye plead for Baal will ye save him he that will plead for him let him be put to death whilest it is yee mâ—rning it he be a god let him plead for himself because one hath cast down his altar 32 Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal saying Let Baal plead against him because he hath thrown down his altar 33 ¶ Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together and went over and pitched in the valley of Jazreel 34 But the spirit of the LORD †Heb. clothed came upon Gideon and he * Numb 10.3 Chap. 3.27 blew a trumpet and Abiezer †Heb. was called after him was gathered after him 35 And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh who also was gathered after him and he sent messengers unto Asher and unto Zebulun and unto Naphtali and they came up to meet them 36 ¶ And Gideon said unto God If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand as thou hast said 37 Behold I will put a fleece of wooll in the floor and if the dew be on the fleece onely and it be dry upon all the earth beside then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand as thou hast said 38 And it was so for he rose up early on the morrow and thrust the fleece together and wringed the dew out of the fleece a bowl-full of water 39 And Gideon said unto God * Gen. 18.32 Let not thine anger be hot against me and I will speak but this once Let me prove I pray thee but this once with the fleece let it now be dry onely upon the fleece and upon all the ground let there he dew 40 And God did to that night for it was dry upon the fleece onely and there was dew on all the ground CHAP. VII 1 Gideons army of two and thirty thousand is brought to three hundred 9 He is encouraged by the dream and interpretation of the barley-cake 16 His stratagem of trumpets and lamps in pitchers 24 The Ephraimites take Oreb and Zeeb THen Jerubbaal who is Gideon and all the people that were with him rose up early and pitched beside the well of Harod so that the host of the Midianites were on the north-side of them by the hill of Moreh in the valley 2 And the LORD said unto Gideon The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands left Israel vaunt themselves against me saying Mine own hand hath saved me 3 Now therefore go to proclaim in the ears of the people saying * Deu. 20.8 1 Mac. 3.56 Whosoever is fearful and afraid let him return and depart early from mount Gilead and there returned of the people twenty and two thousand and there remained ten thousand 4 And the LORD said unto Gideon The people are yet too many bring them down unto the water and I will try them for thee there and it shall be that of whom I say unto thee This shall go with thee the same shall go with thee and of whomsoever I say unto thee This shall not go with thee the same shall not go 5 So he brought down the people unto the water and the LORD said unto Gideon Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue as a dog lappeth him shalt thou set by himself likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink 6 And the number of them that lapped putting their hand to their mouth were three hundred men but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water 7 And the LORD said unto Gideon By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you and deliver the Midianites into thine hand and let all the other people go every man unto his place 8 So the people took victuals in their hand and their trumpets and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent and retained those three hundred men and the hoâ—t of Midian was beneath him in the valley 9 ¶ And it came to pass the same night that the LORD said unto him Arise get thee down unto the hoâ—t for I have delivered it into thine hand 10 But if thou fear to go down go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host 11 And thou shalt hear what they say and afterwards shall thine hands be
so will I certainly do this day 31 Then Bath-sheba bowed with her face to the earth and did reverence to the king and said Let my lord king David live for ever 32 ¶ And king David said Call me Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada And they came before the king 33 The king also said unto them Take with you the servants of your lord and cause Solomon my son to ride upon †Heb. which belongeth to me mine own mule and bring him down to Gihon 34 And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel and blow ye with the trumpet and say God save king Solomon 35 Then ye shall come up after him that he may come and sit upon my throne for he shall be king in my stead and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah 36 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king and said Amen the LORD God of my lord the king say so too 37 As the LORD hath been with my lord the king even so be he with Solomon and make his throne greater then the throne of my lord king David 38 So Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada and the Cherethites and the Pelethites went down and caused Solomon to ride upon king Davids mule and brought him to Gihon 39 And Zadok the priest took an horn of oyl out of the tabernacle and anointed Solomon and they blew the trumpet and all the people said God save king Solomon 40 And all the people came up after him and the people piped with ‖ Or fluter pipes and rejoyced with great joy so that the earth rent with the sound of them 41 ¶ And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating and when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet he said Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an uproar 42 And while he yet spake behold Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came and Adonijah said unto him Come in for thou art a valiant man and bringest good tidings 43 And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah Verily our lord king David hath made Solomon king 44 And the king hath sent with him Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada and the Cherethites and the Pelethites and they have caused him to ride upon the kings mule 45 And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon and they are come up from thence rejoycing so that the city rang again this is the noise that ye have heard 46 And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the kingdom 47 And moreover the kings servants came to bless our lord king David saying God make the name of Solomon better then thy name and make his throne greater then thy throne and the king bowed himself upon the bed 48 And also thus said the king Blessed be the LORD God of Israel which hath given one to sit on my throne this day mine eyes even seeing it 49 And all the guests that were with Adonijah were afraid and rose up and went every man his way 50 ¶ And Adonijah feared because of Solomon and arose and went and caught hold on the horns of the altar 51 And it was told Solomon saying Behold Adonijah feareth king Solomon for lo he hath caught hold on the horns of the altar saying Let king Solomon swear unto in to day that he will not slay his servant with the sword 52 And Solomon said If he will shew himself a worthy man there shall not an hair of him fall to the earth but if wickedness shall be found in him he shall die 53 So king Solomon sent and they brought him down from the altar and he came and howed himself to king Solomon and Solomon said unto him Go to thine house CHAP. utterly ‖ Or abolished rooted out 11 Who then should make more mourning then she that hath lost so great a multitude and not thou which art sorry but for one 12 But if thou sayest unto me My lamentation is not like the earths because I have lost the fruit of my womb which I brought forth with pains and bare with sorrows 13 ‖ But the earth after the manner of the earth whereinto the present multitude is gone again as it came out But the earth not so for the multitude present in it according to the course of the earth is gone as it came 14 Then say I unto thee Like as thou hast brought forth with labour even so the earth also hath given her fruit namely man ever since the beginning unto him that made her 15 Now therefore keep thy sorrow to thy self and bear with a good courage that which hath be faln thee 16 For it thou shalt acknowledge the determination of God to be just thou shalt both receive thy son in time and shalt be commended amongst women 17 Go thy way then into the city to thine husband 18 And she said unto me That will I not do I will not go into the city but here will I die 19 So I proceeded to speak further unto her and said 20 Do not so but be counselled by me for how many are the adversities of Sion be comforted in regard of the sorrow of Jerusalem 21 For thou seest that our sanctuary is said waste our altar broken down our temple destroyed 22 Our psaltery is laid on the ground our song is put to silence our rejoycing is at an end the light of our candlestick is put out the ark of our covenant is spoiled our holy things are defiled and the name that is called upon us is almost profaned our children are put to shame our priests are burnt our Levites are gone into captivity our virgins are defiled and our wives ravished our righteous men carried away our little ones destroyed our young men are brought in bondage and our strong men are become weak 23 And which is the greatest of all the seal of Sion hath now lost her honour for she is delivered into the hands of them that hate us 24 And therefore shake off thy great heaviness and put away the multitude of sorrows that the Mighty may be merciful unto thee again and the Highest shall give thee rest and ease from thy labour 25 And it came to pass while I was talking with her behold her face upon a sudden shined exceedingly and her countenance glistered so that I was afraid of her and mused what it might be 26 And behold suddenly she made a great cry very fearful so that the earth shook at the noise of the woman 27 And I looked and behold the woman appeared unto me no more but there was a city builded and a large place shewed it self from the foundations then was I afraid and cried with a loud voice and said 28 Where is * Ch. 4.1 Uriel the angel who came unto me at the first for he hath caused me to fall ‖ Or into the multitude in a trance into many trances and mine end is turned into corruption and my prayer to rebuke 29 And as I was speaking these words behold he came unto me and looked upon me 30 And so I say as one that had been dead and mine understanding was taken from me and he took me by the right hand and comforted me and set me upon my feet and said unto me 31 What aileth thee and why art thou so disquieted and why is thine understanding troubled and the thoughts of thine heart 32 And I said Because thou hast forsaken me and yet I did according to thy * Chap 5.20 words and I went into the field and so I have seen and yet see that I am not able to express 33 And he said unto me Stand up manfully and I will advise thee 34 Then said I Speak on my lord in me onely forsake me not lest I die frustrate of my hope 35 For I have seen that I knew not and hear that I do not know 36 Or is my sense deceived or my soul in a dream 37 Now therefore I beseech thee that thou wilt shew thy servant of this ‖ Or trance vision 38 He answered me then and said Hear me and I shall inform thee and tell thee wherefore thou art afraid for the Highest will reveal many secret things unto thee 39 He hath seen that thy ‖ Or purpose way is right for that thou sorrowest continually for thy people and makest great lamentation for Sion 40 This therefore is the meaning of the vision which thou lately sawest 41 Thou sawest a woman mourning and thou beganst to comfort her 42 But now seest thou the likeness of the woman no more but there appeared unto thee a city builded 43 And whereas she told thee of the death of her son this is the ‖ Or interpretation solution 44 This woman whom thou sawest is Sion and whereas she said unto thee even she whom thou seest as a city builded 45 Whereas I say she said unto thee that she hath been thirty years barren those are the thirty years wherein there was no offering made in her 46 But after thirty years Solomon builded the city and offered offerings and then bare the barren a son 47 And whereas she told thee that she nourished him with labour that was the dwelling in Jerusalem 48 But whereas she said unto thee That my son coming into his marriage-chamber hapned to have a fall and died this was the destruction that came to Jerusalem 49 And behold thou sawest her likeness and because she mourned for her son thou beganst to comfort her and of these things which have chanced these are to be opened unto thee 50 For now the most High seeth that thou art grieved unfeignedly and sufferest from thy whole heart for her so hath he shewed thee the brightness of her glory and the comeliness of her beauty 51 And therefore I bade thee remain in the field where no house was builded 52 For I knew that the Highest would shew this unto thee 53 Therefore I commanded thee to go into the field where no foundation of any building was 54 For in the place wherein the Highest beginneth to shew his city there can no mans building be able to stand 55 And therefore sear not let not thine heart he affrighted but go thy way in and see the beauty and greatness of the building as much as thine eyes be able to see 56 And then shalt thou hear as much as thine ears may comprehend 57 For thou art blessed above many other and ‖ Or at called to be with c. art called with the Highest and so are but few 58 But to morrow at night thou shalt remain here 59 And so shall the Highest shew thee visions of the ‖ Or
of the shew-bread and the pouring vessels and the vials and the censers of gold and the veil and the crowns and the golden ornaments that were before the temple ‖ Or he pilled all things all which he pulled off 23 He took also the silver and the gold and the †Gr. desirable precious vessels also he took the hidden treasures which he found 24 And when he had taken all away he went into his own land having made a great massacre and spoken very proudly 25 Therefore there was great mourning in Israel in every place where they were 26 So that the princes and elders mourned the virgins and young men were made feeble and the beauty of women was changed 27 Every bridegroom took up lamentation and she that sat in the marriage-chamber was in heaviness 28 The land also was moved for the inhabitants thereof and all the house of Jacob was covered with confusion 29 And after two years fully expired the king sent his chief collectour of tribute unto the cities of Juda who came unto Jerusalem with a great multitude 30 And spake peaceable words unto them but all was deceit for when they had given him credence he fell suddenly upon the city and smote it very sore and destroyed much people of Israel 31 And when he had taken the spoils of the city he set it on fire and pulled down the houses and walls thereof on every side 32 But the women and children took they captive and possessed the cattel 33 Then builded they the city of David with a great and strong wall and with mighty towres and made it a strong hold for them 34 And they put therein a sinful nation wicked men and fortified themselves therein 35 They stored it also with armour and victuals and when they had gathered together the spoils of Jerusalem they laid them up there and so they became a sore snare 36 For it was a place to lie in wait against the sanctuary and an evil adversary to Israel 37 Thus they shed innocent bloud on every side of the sanctuary and defiled it 38 Insomuch that the inhabitants of Jerusalem fled because of them whereupon the city was made an habitation of strangers and became strange to those that were born in her and her own children left her 39 Her sanctuary was laid waste like a wilderness her feasts were turned into mourning her sabbaths into reproach her honour into contempt 40 As had been her glory so was her dishonour increased and her excellency was turned into mourning 41 Moreover king Antiochus wrote to his whole kingdom that all should be one people 42 And every one should leave his laws so all the heathen agreed according to the commandment of the king 43 Yea many also of the Israelites consented to his religion and sacrificed unto idols and profaned the sabbath 44 For the king had sent letters by messengers unto Jerusalem and the cities of Juda that they should follow ‖ Or the laws and rites of the strangers of the land the strange laws of the land 45 And forbid burnt-offerings and sacrifice and drink-offerings in the temple and that they should profane the sabbaths and festival days 46 And pollute the sanctuary and holy people 47 Set up altars and groves and chappels of idols and sacrifice swines flesh and unclean beasts 48 That they should also leave their children uncircumcised and make their souls abominable with all manner of uncleanness and profanation 49 To the end they might forget the law and change all the ordinances 50 And whosoever would not do according to the commandment of the king he said he should die 51 In the self-same manner wrote he to his whole kingdom and appointed overseers over all the people commanding the cities of Juda to sacrifice city by city 52 Then many of the people were gathered unto them to wit every one that forsook the law and so they committed evils in the land 53 ‖ Or And they made Israel hide themselves in holes in every place of succour And drove the Israelites into secret places even wheresoever they could flee for succour 54 Now the fifteenth day of the moneth Casleu in the hundred fourty and fifth year they set up the abomination of desolation upon the altar and builded idol-altars throughout the cities of Juda on every side 55 And burnt incense at the doors of their houses and in the streets 56 And when they had rent in pieces the books of the law which they found they burnt them with fire 57 And wheresoever was found with any the book of the testament or if any consented to the law †Gr. the kings commandment put him to death the kings commandment was that they should put him to death 58 Thus did they by their authority unto the Israelites every moneth to as many as were found in the cities 59 Now the five and twentieth day of the moneth they did sacrifice upon the idol-idol-altar which was upon the altar of God 60 At which time according to the commandment they put to death certain women †Gr. that had circumcised their children that had caused their children to be circumcised 61 And they hanged the infants about their necks and rifled their houses and slew them that had circumcised them 62 Howbeit many in Israel were fully resolved and confirmed in themselves not to eat any unclean thing 63 Wherefore they chose rather to die that they might not be defiled with meats and that they might not profane the holy covenant so then they died 64 And there was very great wrath upon Israel CHAP. II. 6 Mattathias lamenteth the case of Jerusalem 24 He slayeth a Jew that did sacrifice to idols in his presence and the kings messenger also 34 He and his are assailed on the sabbath and make no resistance 50 He dieth and instrutieth his sons 66 and maketh their brother Judas Maccabeus general IN those days ‖ Or Mattathias the son of John c. arose from Jerusalem or out of Jerusalem arose Mattathias the son of John the son of Simeon a priest of the sons of Joarib from Jerusalem and dwelt in Modin 2 And he had five sons Joannan ‖ Or who was called and so aflterward in the rest called ‖ Gaddis Caddis 3 Simon called Thassi 4 Judas who was called Maccabeus 5 Eleazar called ‖ Or Avaron or Abaron Avaran and Jonathan whose surname was Apphus 6 And when he saw the blasphemies that were committed in Juda and Jerusalem 7 He said Wo is me wherefore was I born to see this misery of my people and of the holy city and to dwell there when it was delivered into the hand of the enemy and the sanctuary into the hand of strangers 8 Her temple is become as a man without glory 9 Her glorious vessels are carried away into captivity her infants are slain in the streets her young men with the sword of the enemy 10 What nation
fathers graves 40 Now under the coats of every one that was slain they found things consecrated to the idols of the Jamnites which is forbidden the Jews by * Deut. â—7 7 the law Then every man saw that this was the cause wherefore they were slain 41 All men therefore praising the Lord the righteous Judge who had opened the things that were hid 42 Betook themselves unto prayer and besought him that the sin committed might wholly be put out of remembrance Besides that noble Judas exhorted the people to keep themselves from sin forsomuch as they saw before their eyes the things that came to pass for the sins of those that were slain 43 And when he had made a gathering throughout the company to the sum of two thousand drachnies of silver he sent it to Jerusalem to offer a sin offering doing therein very well and honestly in that he was mindful of the resurrection 44 For if he had not hoped that they that were slain should have risen again it had been superfluous and vain to pray for the dead 45 And also in that he perceived that there was great favour said up for those that died godly It was an holy and good thought Whereupon he made a reconciliation for the dead that they might be delivered from sin CHAP. XIII 1 Eupator invadeth Judea 15 Judas by night slayeth many 18 Eupators purpose is defeated 23 He maketh peace with Judas IN the hundred fourty and ninth year it was told Judas that Antiochus Eupator was coming with a great power into Judea 2 And with him Lysias his protectour and ruler of his affairs having either of them a Grecian power of footmen an hundred ten thousand and hors-men five thousand and three hundred and elephants two and twenty and three hundred chariots armed with hooks 3 Menelaus also joyned himself with them and with great dissimulation encouraged Antiochus not for the safeguard of the countrey but because he thought to have been made governour 4 But the King of kings moved Antiochus minde against this wicked wretch and Lysias informed the king that this man was the cause of all mischief so that the king commanded to bring him unto Berea and to put him to death as the manner is in that place 5 Now there was in that place a towre of fifty cubits high full of ashes and it had a round instrument which on every side hanged down into the ashes 6 And whosoever was condemned of sacriledge or had committed any other grievous crime there did all men thrust him unto death 7 Such a death it hapned that wicked man to die not having so much as burial in the earth and that most justly 8 For insomuch as he had committed many sins about the altar whose fire and ashes were holy he received his death in ashes 9 Now the king came with a barbarous and haughty minde to do far worse to the Jews then had been done in his fathers time 10 Which things when Judas perceived he commanded the multitude to call upon the Lord night and day that if ever at any other time he would now also help them being at the point to be put from their law from their countrey and from the holy temple 11 And that he would not suffer the people that ‖ Or bad bad a little respite had even now been but a little refreshed to be in subjection to the blasphemous nations 12 So when they had all done this together and besought the merciful Lord with weeping and fasting and lying flat upon the groud three days long Judas having exhorted them commanded they should be in a readiness 13 And Judas being apart with the elders determined before the kings host should enter into Judea and get the city to go forth and try the matter in fight by the help of the Lord. 14 So when he had committed all to the ‖ Or Lord.
