they_o shall_v then_o begin_v to_o think_v of_o die_v that_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o the_o late_a to_o begin_v such_o a_o work_n though_o if_o they_o have_v not_o do_v it_o before_o it_o be_v without_o doubt_n high_a time_n to_o begin_v it_o then_o in_o the_o last_o minute_n of_o their_o life_n and_o to_o do_v what_o they_o can_v in_o that_o little_a time_n that_o remain_v to_o obtain_v more_o solemn_a preparation_n for_o it_o that_o be_v when_o their_o condition_n and_o circumstance_n of_o life_n will_v permit_v it_o to_o take_v a_o timely_a leave_n of_o the_o world_n and_o to_o withdraw_v from_o the_o noise_n and_o business_n of_o it_o when_o they_o be_v place_v just_a in_o the_o confine_n of_o both_o world_n to_o direct_v their_o face_n whole_o to_o that_o world_n whither_o they_o be_v a_o go_v to_o spend_v the_o little_a remain_v of_o their_o life_n in_o converse_v with_o themselves_o with_o god_n and_o with_o the_o other_o world._n 1._o in_o converse_v with_o themselves_o which_o god_n know_v very_o few_o man_n do_v while_o they_o be_v engage_v in_o the_o business_n of_o this_o world_n the_o care_n of_o life_n or_o the_o pleasure_n of_o it_o our_o family_n or_o our_o friend_n or_o stranger_n themselves_o take_v we_o from_o ourselves_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v fit_a before_o man_n go_v out_o of_o this_o world_n that_o they_o shall_v recover_v the_o possession_n of_o themselves_o and_o grow_v a_o little_a more_o acquaint_v and_o intimate_v with_o themselves_o retire_v from_o the_o world_n to_o take_v a_o more_o thorough_a review_n of_o their_o life_n and_o action_n what_o they_o have_v still_o to_o do_v to_o make_v their_o peace_n with_o god_n and_o their_o own_o conscience_n whether_o there_o be_v any_o sin_n which_o they_o have_v not_o thorough_o repent_v of_o and_o hearty_o beg_v god_n pardon_n for_o any_o injury_n they_o have_v do_v their_o neighbour_n for_o which_o they_o have_v not_o make_v sufficient_a restitution_n and_o reparation_n whether_o they_o have_v any_o quarrel_n with_o any_o man_n which_o be_v not_o compose_v and_o reconcile_v whether_o there_o be_v any_o part_n of_o their_o duty_n which_o they_o have_v former_o too_o much_o neglect_v as_o charity_n to_o the_o poor_a the_o wise_a education_n and_o instruction_n of_o their_o child_n and_o family_n and_o to_o apply_v themselves_o to_o a_o more_o diligent_a discharge_n of_o it_o what_o distemper_n there_o be_v in_o their_o mind_n which_o still_o need_v to_o be_v rectify_v what_o grace_n be_v weak_a what_o passion_n be_v most_o disorderly_a and_o unmortified_a and_o to_o apply_v proper_a remedy_n to_o they_o this_o be_v a_o excellent_a preparation_n for_o death_n because_o it_o will_v give_v we_o great_a hope_n and_o assurance_n in_o die_v it_o give_v we_o peace_n and_o satisfaction_n in_o our_o own_o mind_n by_o a_o thorough_a knowledge_n of_o our_o own_o state_n and_o by_o rectify_v whatever_o be_v amiss_o it_o deliver_v our_o conscience_n from_o guilty_a fear_n and_o so_o disarm_v death_n of_o its_o sting_n and_o terror_n for_o the_o sting_n of_o death_n be_v sin_n and_o when_o this_o sting_n be_v pull_v out_o we_o have_v nothing_o else_o to_o contend_v with_o but_o some_o little_a natural_a aversion_n to_o die_a which_o be_v more_o easy_o conquer_v 2._o thus_o in_o this_o preparatory_a retirement_n from_o the_o world_n we_o shall_v spend_v great_a portion_n of_o our_o time_n in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n in_o our_o public_a or_o private_a devotion_n for_o common_o man_n of_o business_n be_v very_o much_o in_o arrear_n with_o god_n upon_o this_o account_n in_o their_o active_a age_n they_o have_v little_a time_n to_o spare_v or_o little_a mind_n to_o spare_v it_o for_o the_o use_n of_o religion_n and_o therefore_o we_o may_v well_o retire_v some_o time_n before_o we_o die_v to_o

therefore_o they_o may_v indulge_v themselves_o a_o while_n and_o enjoy_v the_o sweet_n of_o sin_n and_o gratify_v their_o youthful_a inclination_n and_o learn_v the_o vanity_n of_o the_o world_n by_o experience_n as_o their_o forefather_n have_v do_v before_o they_o and_o then_o they_o will_v grow_v as_o wise_a and_o grave_a and_o declaim_v against_o the_o folly_n and_o vanity_n of_o youth_n and_o be_v as_o penitent_a and_o as_o devout_a and_o religious_a as_o any_o of_o they_o all_o whoever_o consider_v the_o uncertainty_n of_o humane_a life_n if_o he_o shall_v hear_v man_n talk_v at_o this_o of_o sinner_n of_o which_o more_o present_o but_o i_o speak_v now_o of_o those_o and_o too_o many_o such_o there_o be_v who_o resolve_v to_o take_v their_o fill_n of_o this_o world_n while_o youth_n and_o strength_n and_o health_n last_o and_o to_o grow_v sober_a and_o religious_a when_o they_o grow_v old_a the_o consequent_a of_o which_o be_v that_o they_o resolve_v to_o be_v damn_v unless_o they_o live_v till_o they_o be_v old_a or_o till_o they_o grow_v weary_a of_o their_o sin_n and_o learn_v more_o wisdom_n by_o age_n and_o experience_n now_o i_o shall_v not_o insist_v at_o present_a be_v not_o a_o great_a cheat_n in_o the_o world_n that_o man_n put_v upon_o themselves_o than_o to_o indulge_v themselves_o in_o all_o manner_n of_o wickedness_n to_o contract_v strong_a and_o powerful_a habit_n of_o vice_n with_o a_o resolution_n to_o repent_v of_o their_o sin_n and_o to_o forsake_v they_o before_o they_o die_v the_o experience_n of_o the_o world_n sufficient_o prove_v how_o vain_a this_o be_v for_o though_o some_o such_o man_n may_v live_v while_o they_o be_v old_a how_o seldom_o be_v it_o see_v that_o they_o repent_v of_o their_o youthful_a debauchery_n when_o they_o grow_v old_a they_o still_o retain_v their_o love_n and_o affection_n for_o those_o sin_n which_o they_o can_v commit_v no_o long_o and_o repent_v of_o nothing_o but_o that_o they_o be_v grow_v old_a and_o can_v be_v so_o wicked_a as_o they_o be_v when_o they_o be_v young_a and_o be_v there_o any_o reason_n in_o the_o world_n to_o expect_v it_o shall_v be_v otherwise_o do_v we_o not_o know_v what_o the_o power_n of_o habit_n and_o custom_n be_v how_o the_o love_n of_o sin_n increase_v with_o the_o repeat_v commission_n of_o it_o and_o be_v the_o spend_v our_o youthful_a strength_n and_o vigour_n in_o sin_n likely_a to_o dispose_v and_o prepare_v we_o to_o be_v sincere_a penitent_n when_o we_o grow_v old_a do_v we_o not_o see_v that_o a_o custom_n of_o sin_v in_o some_o man_n destroy_v the_o modesty_n of_o humane_a nature_n in_o other_o all_o sense_n of_o god_n and_o of_o religion_n or_o of_o the_o natural_a difference_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a some_o man_n sin_v on_o till_o they_o despise_v repentance_n other_o till_o they_o think_v repentance_n be_v too_o late_o so_o that_o though_o man_n be_v sure_a that_o they_o shall_v live_v long_o enough_o to_o grow_v wise_a and_o to_o repent_v and_o reform_v the_o sin_n and_o extravagance_n of_o youth_n yet_o no_o man_n who_o enter_v upon_o a_o wicked_a course_n of_o life_n have_v any_o reason_n to_o expect_v that_o he_o shall_v ever_o repent_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v extreme_o dangerous_a to_o flatter_v ourselves_o into_o a_o habit_n and_o custom_n of_o sin_v with_o the_o hope_n and_o expectation_n that_o we_o shall_v live_v to_o repent_v of_o our_o sin_n and_o if_o this_o be_v dangerous_a it_o must_v be_v very_o dangerous_a to_o flatter_v ourselves_o with_o the_o hope_n of_o long_a life_n which_o be_v the_o great_a temptation_n to_o man_n to_o sin_n on_o and_o to_o delay_v their_o repentance_n till_o old_a age_n 2._o since_o the_o time_n of_o our_o death_n be_v so_o unknown_a and_o uncertain_a to_o we_o we_o ought_v always_o to_o live_v in_o expectation_n of_o it_o to_o be_v so_o far_o from_o promise_v ourselves_o long_a life_n that_o we_o shall_v not_o promise_v ourselves_o a_o day_n and_o the_o reason_n for_o it_o be_v plain_a and_o necessary_a because_o we_o be_v not_o sure_a of_o a_o day_n this_n you_o will_v say_v be_v hard_o indeed_o to_o live_v always_o in_o expectation_n of_o die_v which_o be_v no_o better_a than_o die_v every_o day_n or_o endure_v the_o repeat_v fear_n and_o terror_n of_o death_n every_o day_n which_o be_v the_o most_o uncomfortable_a part_n of_o die_a at_o this_o rate_n we_o never_o live_v but_o instead_o of_o die_v once_o as_o god_n have_v appoint_v we_o be_v always_o a_o die_a nay_o this_o indeed_o be_v a_o fine_a say_n but_o signify_v nothing_o for_o no_o man_n do_v it_o nor_o can_v do_v it_o though_o we_o may_v die_v every_o day_n we_o see_v that_o man_n live_v on_o forty_o fifty_o threescore_o year_n and_o therefore_o though_o we_o know_v that_o our_o life_n be_v uncertain_a yet_o no_o man_n can_v think_v every_o day_n that_o he_o shall_v die_v to_o day_n this_o be_v very_o true_a and_o therefore_o to_o live_v always_o in_o expectation_n of_o die_v do_v not_o signify_v a_o belief_n that_o we_o shall_v die_v to_o day_n but_o only_o that_o we_o may_v which_o answer_v the_o objection_n against_o the_o uncomfortableness_n himself_o so_o much_o as_o this_o who_o do_v not_o live_v in_o a_o constant_a expectation_n of_o death_n we_o may_v be_v cut_v off_o by_o a_o sudden_a stroke_n or_o seize_v with_o distraction_n or_o thing_n than_o what_o appear_v to_o we_o we_o perceive_v nothing_o at_o all_o of_o it_o for_o this_o vail_n of_o flesh_n part_v the_o visible_a and_o invisible_a world_n but_o when_o we_o put_v off_o these_o body_n there_o be_v new_a and_o surprise_v wonder_n present_v themselves_o to_o our_o view_n when_o these_o material_a spectacle_n be_v take_v off_o our_o soul_n with_o its_o own_o naked_a eye_n sees_z what_o be_v invisible_a before_o and_o then_o we_o be_v in_o the_o other_o world_n when_o we_o can_v see_v it_o and_o converse_v with_o it_o thus_o st._n paul_n tell_v we_o that_o when_o we_o be_v at_o home_n in_o the_o body_n we_o be_v absent_a from_o the_o lord_n but_o when_o we_o be_v absent_a from_o the_o body_n we_o be_v present_a with_o the_o lord_n 2_o cor._n 5._o 6_o 8._o and_o methinks_v this_o be_v enough_o to_o cure_v we_o of_o our_o fondness_n for_o these_o body_n unless_o we_o think_v it_o more_o desirable_a to_o be_v confine_v to_o a_o prison_n and_o to_o look_v through_o a_o grate_n all_o our_o life_n which_o give_v we_o but_o a_o very_a narrow_a prospect_n and_o that_o none_o of_o the_o best_a neither_o then_o to_o be_v set_v at_o liberty_n to_o view_v all_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o world._n what_o will_v we_o give_v now_o for_o the_o least_o glimpse_n of_o that_o invisible_a world_n which_o the_o first_o step_n we_o take_v out_o of_o these_o body_n will_v present_v we_o with_o there_o be_v such_o thing_n as_o eye_n have_v not_o see_v nor_o ear_n hear_v neither_o have_v it_o enter_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n to_o conceive_v death_n open_v we_o eye_n enlarge_v our_o prospect_n present_v we_o with_o a_o new_a and_o more_o glorious_a world_n which_o we_o can_v never_o see_v while_o we_o be_v shut_v up_o in_o flesh_n which_o shall_v make_v we_o as_o willing_a to_o part_v with_o this_o veil_n as_o to_o take_v the_o film_n off_o of_o our_o eye_n which_o hinder_v our_o sight_n iv._o if_o we_o must_v put_v off_o these_o body_n methinks_v be_v our_o business_n which_o we_o must_v short_o part_v with_o and_o yet_o as_o for_o pride_n these_o mortal_a corruptible_a body_n and_o what_o relate_v to_o they_o administer_v most_o of_o the_o occasion_n of_o it_o some_o man_n glory_v in_o their_o birth_n and_o in_o their_o descent_n from_o noble_a ancestor_n and_o ancient_a family_n which_o beside_o the_o vanity_n of_o it_o for_o if_o we_o trace_v our_o pedigree_n to_o their_o original_a it_o be_v certain_a that_o all_o our_o family_n be_v equal_o ancient_a and_o equal_o noble_a for_o we_o descend_v all_o from_o adam_n and_o in_o such_o a_o long_a descent_n as_o this_o no_o man_n can_v tell_v whether_o there_o have_v not_o be_v beggar_n and_o prince_n in_o those_o which_o be_v the_o noble_a and_o mean_a family_n now_o yet_o i_o say_v what_o be_v all_o this_o but_o to_o pride_n ourselves_o in_o our_o body_n and_o our_o bodily_a descent_n unless_o man_n think_v that_o their_o soul_n be_v derive_v from_o their_o parent_n too_o indeed_o our_o birth_n be_v so_o very_o ignoble_a whatever_o our_o ancestor_n be_v or_o however_o it_o may_v be_v dissemble_v with_o some_o pompous_a circumstance_n that_o no_o man_n have_v any_o reason_n to_o glory_n in_o it_o for_o the_o great_a prince_n be_v bear_v like_o the_o wild_a ass_n colt._n other_o glory_v in_o their_o external_a beauty_n which_o how_o great_a and_o charm_a soever_o it_o be_v be_v but_o the_o beauty_n of_o the_o body_n which_o if_o it_o be_v spare_v by_o sickness_n and_o old_a age_n must_v perish_v in_o the_o grave_a death_n will_v spoil_v those_o feature_n and_o colour_n which_o be_v now_o admire_v and_o after_o a_o short_a time_n there_o will_v be_v no_o distinction_n between_o this_o beautiful_a body_n and_o common_a dust._n other_o be_v guilty_a of_o great_a vanity_n than_o this_o and_o what_o nature_n have_v deny_v they_o supply_v by_o art_n they_o adorn_v their_o body_n with_o rich_a attire_n and_o many_o time_n such_o body_n as_o will_v not_o be_v adorn_v and_o then_o they_o glory_v in_o their_o borrow_a feather_n but_o what_o a_o sorry_a beauty_n be_v that_o which_o they_o can_v carry_v into_o the_o other_o world_n and_o if_o they_o must_v leave_v their_o body_n in_o the_o grave_a i_o think_v there_o will_v be_v no_o great_a occasion_n in_o the_o other_o world_n for_o their_o rich_a and_o splendid_a apparel_n which_o will_v not_o fit_v a_o soul._n thus_o what_o do_v riches_n signify_v but_o to_o minister_v to_o the_o want_n and_o convenience_n and_o pleasure_n of_o the_o body_n and_o therefore_o to_o pride_n ourselves_o in_o riches_n be_v to_o glory_n in_o the_o body_n too_o to_o think_v ourselves_o more_o considerable_a than_o other_o man_n because_o we_o can_v provide_v better_o for_o our_o body_n than_o they_o can_v and_o what_o a_o mean_a and_o contemptible_a vice_n be_v pride_n who_o subject_n and_o occasion_n be_v so_o mean_a and_o contemptible_a to_o pride_n ourselves_o in_o these_o body_n which_o have_v so_o ignoble_a a_o extraction_n be_v of_o so_o short_a a_o continuance_n and_o will_v have_v so_o ignoble_a a_o end_n must_v lie_v down_o in_o the_o grave_a and_o be_v food_n for_o worm_n as_o for_o the_o care_n of_o our_o body_n that_o must_v unavoidable_o take_v up_o great_a part_n of_o our_o time_n to_o supply_v the_o necessity_n of_o nature_n and_o to_o provide_v the_o convenience_n of_o life_n but_o this_o may_v be_v for_o the_o good_a of_o our_o soul_n too_o as_o honest_a labour_n and_o industry_n and_o ingenious_a art_n be_v but_o for_o man_n to_o spend_v their_o whole_a time_n in_o sloth_n and_o luxury_n in_o eat_v and_o drink_v and_o sleep_v in_o dress_n and_o adorn_v their_o body_n or_o gratify_v their_o lust_n this_o be_v to_o be_v vile_a slave_n and_o servant_n to_o the_o body_n to_o body_n which_o neither_o need_n nor_o deserve_v this_o from_o we_o after_o all_o our_o care_n they_o will_v tumble_v into_o dust_n and_o common_o much_o the_o soon_o for_o our_o this_o miserable_a life_n and_o transplant_v good_a man_n into_o a_o more_o happy_a as_o well_o as_o immortal_a state._n iv._o since_o the_o fall_n of_o man_n mortality_n and_o death_n be_v necessary_a to_o the_o good_a government_n of_o the_o world_n nothing_o else_o can_v give_v check_n to_o some_o man_n wickedness_n but_o either_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n or_o the_o execution_n of_o it_o some_o man_n be_v so_o outrageous_o wicked_a that_o nothing_o can_v put_v a_o stop_n to_o they_o and_o prevent_v that_o mischief_n they_o do_v in_o the_o world_n but_o to_o cut_v they_o off_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n of_o capital_a punishment_n among_o man_n to_o remove_v those_o out_o of_o the_o world_n who_o will_v be_v a_o plague_n to_o mankind_n while_o they_o live_v in_o it_o for_o this_o reason_n god_n destroy_v the_o whole_a race_n of_o mankind_n by_o a_o deluge_n of_o water_n except_v noah_n and_o his_o family_n because_o they_o be_v incurable_o wicked_a for_o this_o reason_n he_o send_v plague_n and_o famine_n and_o sword_n to_o correct_v the_o exorbitant_a growth_n of_o wickedness_n to_o lessen_v the_o number_n of_o sinner_n and_o to_o lay_v restraint_n on_o they_o and_o if_o the_o world_n be_v such_o a_o bedlam_n as_o it_o be_v under_o all_o these_o restraint_n what_o will_v it_o be_v be_v it_o fill_v with_o immortal_a sinner_n ever_o since_o the_o fall_n of_o adam_n there_o always_o be_v and_o ever_o will_v be_v a_o mixture_n of_o good_a and_o bad_a man_n in_o the_o world_n and_o justice_n require_v that_o god_n shall_v reward_v the_o good_a and_o punish_v the_o wicked_a but_o that_o can_v be_v do_v in_o this_o world_n for_o these_o present_a external_a enjoyment_n be_v not_o the_o proper_a reward_n of_o virtue_n there_o be_v no_o complete_a happiness_n here_o man_n be_v never_o turn_v into_o this_o world_n till_o he_o sin_v and_o be_v fling_v out_o of_o paradise_n which_o be_v a_o argument_n that_o god_n never_o intend_v this_o world_n for_o a_o place_n of_o reward_n and_o perfect_a happiness_n nor_o be_v this_o world_n a_o proper_a place_n for_o the_o final_a punishment_n of_o bad_a man_n because_o good_a man_n live_v among_o they_o and_o without_o a_o miracle_n bad_a man_n can_v be_v great_o punish_v but_o good_a man_n must_v share_v with_o they_o and_o be_v all_o bad_a man_n punish_v to_o their_o desert_n it_o will_v make_v this_o world_n the_o very_a image_n and_o picture_n of_o hell_n which_o will_v be_v a_o very_a unfit_a place_n for_o good_a man_n to_o live_v and_o to_o be_v happy_a in_o as_o much_o as_o good_a man_n suffer_v from_o the_o wicked_a in_o this_o world_n it_o be_v much_o more_o tolerable_a then_o to_o have_v their_o ear_n fill_v with_o the_o perpetual_a cry_n of_o such_o miserable_a sinner_n and_o their_o eye_n terrify_v with_o such_o perpetual_a and_o amaze_a execution_n good_a and_o bad_a man_n must_v be_v separate_v before_o the_o one_o can_v be_v final_o reward_v or_o the_o other_o punish_v and_o such_o a_o separation_n as_o this_o can_v be_v make_v in_o this_o world_n but_o must_v be_v reserve_v for_o the_o next_o so_o that_o consider_v the_o fall_v state_n of_o man_n it_o be_v not_o fit_v it_o be_v not_o for_o the_o good_a of_o mankind_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v immortal_a here_o both_o the_o wisdom_n and_o goodness_n and_o justice_n of_o god_n require_v that_o man_n shall_v their_o fortune_n upon_o the_o road_n which_o common_o bring_v they_o to_o the_o gallow_n what_o a_o fatal_a cheat_n be_v this_o which_o man_n put_v upon_o themselves_o especial_o when_o they_o sin_n in_o hope_n of_o time_n to_o repent_v and_o commit_v such_o sin_n as_o will_v give_v they_o no_o time_n to_o repent_v in_o the_o advice_n of_o the_o psalmist_n be_v much_o better_o what_o man_n be_v he_o that_o desire_v life_n and_o love_v many_o day_n that_o he_o may_v see_v good_a keep_v thy_o tongue_n from_o evil_n and_o thy_o lip_n from_o speak_a guile_n depart_v from_o evil_n and_o do_v by_o it_o it_o prove_v it_o much_o strong_a for_o if_o our_o sentence_n be_v pass_v before_o we_o die_v it_o will_v not_o be_v revoke_v after_o death_n but_o the_o state_v this_o question_n be_v a_o matter_n of_o so_o great_a consequence_n to_o we_o that_o if_o it_o be_v a_o digression_n it_o be_v very_o pardonable_a for_o many_o devout_a mind_n when_o they_o be_v disturb_v and_o cloud_v with_o melancholy_a be_v affly_v with_o such_o thought_n as_o these_o that_o their_o day_n of_o grace_n be_v past_a that_o god_n have_v swear_v in_o his_o wrath_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o enter_v into_o his_o rest_n and_o therefore_o their_o repentance_n and_o tear_n will_v be_v as_o fruitless_a as_o esau_n be_v which_o can_v not_o obtain_v the_o blessing_n now_o for_o the_o resolve_v this_o true_a penitent_n from_o trust_v in_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n how_o late_o soever_o their_o repentance_n be_v for_o while_o we_o live_v in_o this_o world_n the_o door_n of_o grace_n and_o mercy_n be_v not_o shut_v against_o true_a penitent_n 3._o but_o yet_o the_o reason_n of_o lengthen_v the_o day_n of_o grace_n and_o mercy_n do_v not_o reach_v beyond_o this_o life_n this_o sufficient_o appear_v from_o what_o i_o have_v already_o say_v and_o for_o a_o further_a confirmation_n of_o it_o i_o shall_v add_v but_o this_o one_o comprehensive_a reason_n viz._n that_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v confine_v to_o the_o church_n on_o earth_n and_o therefore_o this_o life_n be_v the_o only_a time_n to_o obtain_v the_o remission_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o a_o title_n to_o future_a glory_n we_o shall_v be_v final_o absolve_v from_o all_o our_o sin_n and_o reward_v with_o eternal_a life_n at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n but_o we_o must_v sue_v out_o our_o pardon_n and_o make_v our_o call_v and_o election_n sure_a in_o this_o world._n the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n which_o be_v the_o gospel_n of_o grace_n and_o contain_v the_o promise_n of_o pardon_n and_o immortal_a life_n be_v preach_v only_o to_o man_n on_o earth_n and_o concern_v none_o else_o for_o this_o reason_n christ_n become_v man_n clothe_v with_o flesh_n and_o blood_n as_o we_o be_v that_o he_o may_v be_v the_o saviour_n of_o mankind_n which_o he_o need_v not_o have_v do_v have_v not_o their_o salvation_n be_v to_o be_v wrought_v in_o this_o world_n for_o can_v they_o have_v be_v save_v in_o the_o next_o his_o grace_n may_v have_v meet_v they_o soon_o enough_o there_o and_o therefore_o at_o the_o birth_n of_o our_o saviour_n the_o angel_n sing_v glory_n be_v to_o god_n in_o the_o high_a on_o mean_n of_o salvation_n baptism_n and_o the_o lord_n supper_n and_o they_o be_v confine_v to_o the_o church_n on_o earth_n and_o if_o they_o have_v not_o their_o effect_n here_o they_o can_v have_v it_o in_o the_o next_o world_n these_o unite_v we_o to_o christ_n as_o member_n of_o his_o body_n and_o then_o the_o holy_a spirit_n which_o animate_v the_o body_n of_o christ_n take_v possession_n of_o we_o renew_v and_o sanctify_v we_o but_o if_o we_o prove_v dead_a and_o barren_a branch_n in_o this_o spiritual_a vine_n if_o the_o censure_n of_o the_o church_n do_v not_o cut_v we_o off_o always_o continue_v so_o if_o we_o die_v in_o a_o state_n of_o sin_n under_o the_o wrath_n and_o displeasure_n of_o god_n there_o be_v no_o alter_v our_o state_n in_o the_o other_o world_n we_o must_v abide_v under_o his_o wrath_n for_o ever_o this_o be_v the_o necessary_a consequence_n of_o what_o i_o have_v already_o say_v which_o all_o aim_v at_o this_o point_n that_o once_o die_a put_v we_o into_o a_o immutable_a and_o unchangeable_a state_n and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v wave_v any_o further_a proof_n of_o this_o and_o only_o desire_v you_o serious_o to_o consider_v of_o it_o 1._o now_o first_o since_o death_n put_v a_o end_n to_o our_o day_n of_o grace_n and_o determine_v our_o final_a state_n for_o ever_o and_o this_o death_n come_v but_o once_o all_o man_n must_v confess_v of_o what_o mighty_a consequence_n it_o be_v to_o die_v well_o that_o death_n find_v we_o well_o dispose_v and_o well_o prepare_v for_o another_o world._n man_n use_v their_o utmost_a prudence_n and_o caution_n in_o do_v that_o which_o can_v be_v
apostle_n this_o state_n of_o penitence_n in_o some_o case_n be_v continue_v many_o year_n in_o other_o case_n such_o sinner_n be_v never_o reconcile_v till_o the_o hour_n of_o death_n now_o if_o they_o have_v think_v as_o many_o among_o we_o now_o do_v that_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n and_o the_o vow_n of_o obedience_n do_v immediate_o obtain_v our_o pardon_n from_o god_n for_o sin_n commit_v after_o baptism_n it_o be_v not_o imaginable_a why_o they_o shall_v have_v impose_v such_o a_o long_a and_o severe_a discipline_n on_o penitent_n if_o they_o believe_v god_n have_v forgive_v they_o why_o shall_v not_o the_o church_n forgive_v they_o and_o receive_v they_o they_o to_o her_o communion_n again_o upon_o their_o promise_n of_o amendment_n without_o such_o a_o long_a trial_n of_o their_o reformation_n but_o it_o be_v evident_a they_o think_v sin_n after_o baptism_n not_o forgive_v without_o actual_a reformation_n and_o therefore_o will_v not_o receive_v they_o to_o communion_n again_o without_o a_o try_a and_o visible_a reformation_n of_o their_o life_n we_o know_v what_o dispute_v there_o be_v about_o this_o matter_n in_o the_o primitive_a church_n the_o ancient_a discipline_n allow_v but_o of_o one_o repentance_n after_o baptism_n and_o some_o will_v not_o allow_v of_o that_o in_o the_o case_n of_o adultery_n murder_n and_o idolatry_n but_o deny_v the_o authority_n of_o the_o church_n to_o receive_v such_o sinner_n to_o communion_n again_o this_o be_v the_o pretence_n of_o novatus_n schism_n and_o tertullian_n after_o he_o turn_v montanist_n say_v many_o bitter_a thing_n against_o the_o catholic_n upon_o this_o argument_n which_o seem_v to_o question_v the_o validity_n of_o repentance_n itself_o after_o baptism_n though_o it_o do_v reform_v man_n live_v but_o though_o this_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n too_o much_o and_o do_v both_o lessen_v the_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o authority_n which_o christ_n have_v give_v to_o his_o church_n yet_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o all_o this_o time_n they_o be_v very_o far_o from_o think_v that_o some_o die_a sorrow_n or_o die_a vow_n after_o a_o wicked_a life_n will_v carry_v man_n to_o heaven_n and_o the_o judgement_n of_o those_o first_o and_o pure_a age_n of_o the_o church_n aught_o at_o least_o to_o make_v man_n afraid_a of_o rely_v on_o such_o a_o deathbed_n repentance_n as_o they_o think_v very_o ineffectual_a to_o save_v sinner_n chap._n iu._n concern_v the_o fear_n of_o death_n and_o the_o remedy_n against_o it_o death_n be_v common_o and_o very_o true_o call_v the_o king_n of_o terror_n as_o be_v the_o most_o formidable_a thing_n to_o humane_a nature_n the_o love_n of_o life_n and_o the_o natural_a principle_n of_o self-preservation_n beget_v in_o all_o and_o the_o fear_n of_o punishment_n in_o the_o next_o world_n all_o these_o be_v of_o a_o distinct_a nature_n and_o require_v suitable_a remedy_n and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v distinct_o consider_v they_o i._n the_o natural_a fear_n of_o death_n result_v from_o self-preservation_n and_o the_o love_n of_o our_o own_o be_v for_o light_n be_v sweet_a and_o a_o pleasant_a thing_n it_o be_v for_o this_o union_n be_v a_o general_a repentance_n of_o all_o our_o sin_n renounce_v our_o former_a wicked_a course_n of_o life_n profess_v our_o faith_n in_o christ_n as_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o saviour_n of_o the_o world_n and_o vow_v obedience_n to_o his_o law_n for_o this_o qualify_v we_o to_o be_v his_o disciple_n and_o to_o be_v receive_v into_o his_o service_n and_o into_o the_o communion_n of_o his_o body_n and_o church_n and_o therefore_o this_o faith_n and_o repentance_n justify_v in_o baptism_n because_o those_o who_o thus_o repent_v of_o their_o sin_n and_o believe_v in_o christ_n be_v receive_v to_o baptism_n and_o in_o baptism_n have_v all_o their_o sin_n forgive_v and_o be_v put_v into_o a_o state_n of_o grace_n and_o favour_n with_o god._n but_o now_o though_o faith_n and_o repentance_n and_o the_o vow_n of_o obedience_n be_v sufficient_a to_o make_v we_o the_o disciple_n of_o christ_n and_o to_o put_v we_o into_o a_o state_n of_o justification_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o sufficient_a to_o save_v those_o who_o be_v the_o disciple_n of_o christ_n without_o actual_a holiness_n and_o obedience_n of_o life_n for_o to_o be_v a_o disciple_n of_o christ_n do_v not_o signify_v mere_o to_o believe_v in_o he_o and_o to_o vow_v obedience_n to_o he_o but_o to_o obey_v he_o it_o be_v reasonable_a â—nough_o that_o upon_o our_o vow_n of_o obedience_n we_o shall_v be_v receive_v into_o his_o service_n but_o it_o be_v not_o reasonable_a that_o we_o shall_v be_v reward_v without_o perform_v our_o vow_n for_o it_o be_v as_o ridiculous_a a_o thing_n to_o think_v that_o our_o repeat_v sorrow_n for_o not_o obey_v and_o our_o repeat_v and_o fruitless_a resolution_n of_o obey_v our_o saviour_n shall_v pass_v for_o obedience_n as_o that_o that_o son_n shall_v be_v think_v to_o do_v his_o father_n will_n who_o say_v i_o go_v sir_n but_o go_v not_o especial_o when_o after_o our_o vow_n of_o baptism_n we_o live_v a_o very_a ungodly_a life_n and_o never_o think_v it_o time_n to_o repent_v and_o to_o renew_v our_o vow_n again_o till_o we_o come_v to_o die_v if_o we_o consider_v the_o difference_n between_o what_o be_v necessary_a to_o make_v we_o the_o disciple_n of_o christ_n and_o what_o be_v require_v of_o we_o when_o we_o be_v disciple_n we_o shall_v see_v a_o plain_a reason_n why_o faith_n and_o repentance_n as_o that_o signify_v sorrow_n for_o sin_n and_o vow_n of_o obedience_n will_v justify_v we_o in_o baptism_n but_o will_v not_o be_v accept_v upon_o a_o deathbed_n after_o a_o life_n spend_v in_o wickedness_n for_o when_o a_o baptize_v christian_n come_v to_o die_v he_o be_v not_o then_o to_o be_v make_v a_o disciple_n of_o christ_n and_o to_o be_v baptize_v again_o but_o to_o give_v a_o account_n of_o his_o life_n since_o he_o have_v be_v christ_n disciple_n and_o mere_a faith_n in_o christ_n sorrow_n for_o sin_n and_o vow_n of_o obedience_n without_o actual_a holiness_n of_o life_n though_o with_o the_o sacrament_n of_o baptism_n it_o will_v make_v a_o disciple_n yet_o it_o will_v not_o pass_v in_o a_o disciple_n account_n especial_o when_o the_o sum_n total_a of_o his_o life_n be_v nothing_o but_o sin_n and_o sorrow_n and_o fruitless_a vow_n for_o this_o be_v not_o that_o holiness_n of_o life_n which_o christ_n require_v of_o his_o disciple_n the_o ancient_a discipline_n of_o the_o church_n
