let_v we_o strive_v to_o be_v plant_n in_o god_n house_n live_v plant_n tree_n of_o righteousness_n plant_v by_o the_o river_n of_o his_o sanctuary_n and_o then_o we_o shall_v never_o be_v cut_v down_o our_o leaf_n shall_v never_o fall_v our_o branch_n never_o wither_v 2._o let_v we_o learn_v so_o to_o love_v this_o life_n and_o all_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n as_o matter_n that_o we_o must_v part_v with_o that_o we_o have_v no_o lease_n or_o assurance_n of_o for_o one_o day_n and_o where_o god_n make_v they_o instrument_n of_o comfort_n and_o help_v unto_o we_o if_o we_o enjoy_v they_o day_n after_o day_n let_v we_o bless_v god_n for_o it_o and_o count_v every_o day_n that_o he_o lend_v we_o &_o every_o blessing_n that_o he_o bestow_v upon_o we_o day_n after_o day_n a_o advantage_n unto_o we_o more_o than_o we_o deserve_v 3._o let_v we_o every_o morning_n fit_a and_o prepare_v ourselves_o for_o cut_v down_o though_o we_o be_v never_o so_o lusty_a and_o flourish_v never_o so_o much_o yet_o let_v we_o consider_v that_o we_o be_v but_o as_o grass_n and_o though_o this_o morning_n we_o flourish_v yet_o before_o night_n we_o may_v be_v cut_v down_o and_o wither_v and_o all_o our_o glory_n and_o comfort_n lie_v in_o the_o dust_n it_o be_v well_o with_o we_o if_o we_o so_o live_v that_o when_o death_n shall_v come_v to_o cut_v we_o down_o we_o can_v not_o say_v i_o little_o think_v that_o i_o shall_v die_v so_o soon_o and_o for_o other_o who_o life_n be_v dear_a unto_o we_o and_o who_o death_n may_v be_v a_o judgement_n unto_o we_o let_v we_o so_o set_v our_o sin_n before_o our_o eye_n that_o they_o may_v be_v a_o mean_n to_o work_v in_o we_o a_o holy_a and_o religious_a fear_n of_o their_o death_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o these_o comfort_n and_o content_v we_o receive_v from_o they_o and_o how_o strong_a and_o flourish_a so_o ever_o we_o shall_v see_v they_o in_o the_o morning_n yet_o let_v we_o think_v with_o fear_n that_o before_o evening_n they_o may_v be_v cut_v down_o and_o we_o may_v loose_v they_o and_o all_o the_o comfort_n that_o depend_v upon_o they_o verse_n 7._o for_o we_o be_v consume_v in_o thy_o anger_n and_o by_o thy_o wrath_n be_v we_o trouble_v hitherto_o the_o prophet_n in_o his_o complaint_n have_v set_v forth_o by_o comparison_n what_o great_a mortality_n god_n have_v bring_v upon_o the_o child_n of_o adam_n now_o here_o in_o this_o verse_n he_o show_v the_o cause_n thereof_o the_o anger_n of_o god_n adam_n and_o all_o the_o son_n of_o adam_n have_v offend_v he_o and_o therefore_o he_o have_v bring_v this_o universal_a mortality_n and_o deluge_n upon_o man_n and_o this_o anger_n of_o god_n he_o set_v forth_o 1._o by_o the_o cause_n 2._o by_o the_o greatness_n concern_v the_o anger_n of_o god_n we_o must_v not_o think_v that_o it_o be_v a_o perturbation_n of_o mind_n in_o he_o whereby_o he_o indeed_o fret_v and_o be_v vex_v within_o himself_o as_o man_n use_v to_o be_v who_o wrath_n and_o anger_n do_v ordinary_o more_o hurt_v &_o torment_v themselves_o than_o those_o they_o be_v angry_a withal_o but_o it_o be_v in_o god_n a_o holy_a and_o just_a disposition_n to_o inflict_v deserve_v punishment_n upon_o his_o creature_n though_o god_n therefore_o have_v absolute_a power_n of_o his_o own_o free_a will_n to_o destroy_v the_o creature_n which_o he_o have_v make_v without_o any_o cause_n yet_o he_o do_v not_o destroy_v man_n without_o some_o special_a cause_n and_o motive_n thereunto_o and_o this_o cause_n be_v not_o a_o pleasure_n and_o delight_n as_o though_o it_o shall_v be_v a_o sport_n and_o pastime_n of_o god_n to_o make_v and_o mar_v so_o excellent_a a_o workmanship_n of_o his_o own_o as_o it_o be_v with_o child_n to_o kill_v fly_n or_o huntsman_n to_o kill_v wild_a beast_n neither_o be_v any_o special_a profit_n or_o use_v any_o cause_n thereof_o as_o it_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o husbandman_n cut_v down_o grass_n not_o that_o they_o be_v angry_a with_o it_o or_o that_o they_o place_v any_o delight_n in_o so_o do_v but_o for_o necessary_a use_n and_o benefit_n but_o the_o true_a and_o immediate_a cause_n be_v anger_n that_o which_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o mortality_n in_o war_n god_n have_v be_v provoke_v by_o us._n and_o as_o a_o mighty_a king_n be_v provoke_v by_o his_o subject_n nothing_o follow_v but_o death_n so_o be_v it_o with_o god_n 1._o hence_o than_o we_o learn_v to_o labour_v to_o see_v and_o behold_v the_o wrath_n and_o anger_n of_o god_n in_o sickness_n distress_n old_a age_n death_n and_o in_o that_o mortality_n that_o we_o see_v in_o this_o world_n and_o upon_o special_a occasion_n to_o acknowledge_v it_o and_o it_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o fear_v and_o tremble_v before_o he_o and_o to_o take_v heed_n how_o we_o far_o provoke_v he_o to_o wrath_n 2._o we_o shall_v admire_v the_o goodness_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n that_o his_o wrath_n be_v so_o universal_a upon_o all_o the_o son_n of_o adam_n yet_o in_o this_o wrath_n he_o shall_v remember_v mercy_n and_o raise_v those_o again_o to_o life_n even_o to_o eternal_a life_n that_o in_o anger_n he_o have_v wound_v to_o death_n 3._o we_o shall_v labour_v more_o to_o see_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n in_o our_o accurse_a estate_n after_o this_o life_n god_n do_v but_o play_v with_o we_o as_o it_o be_v in_o take_v away_o our_o life_n here_o and_o if_o the_o first_o death_n be_v such_o a_o sign_n thereof_o what_o a_o sign_n thereof_o be_v it_o in_o they_o in_o who_o there_o appear_v fearful_a and_o prodigious_a figne_n of_o the_o second_o death_n which_o majesty_n of_o god_n be_v the_o great_a must_v that_o cause_n be_v that_o provoke_v he_o to_o wrath_n it_o be_v weakness_n to_o be_v provoke_v with_o a_o small_a matter_n weakness_n nor_o no_o property_n of_o weakness_n can_v befall_v the_o almighty_a god_n sin_n therefore_o whatsoever_o it_o be_v can_v be_v no_o small_a matter_n no_o trifle_n that_o provoke_v the_o infinite_a majesty_n of_o god_n to_o wrath_n and_o to_o such_o a_o wrath_n as_o have_v such_o deadly_a effect_n the_o use_n of_o this_o then_o be_v when_o we_o see_v any_o sign_n of_o god_n displeasure_n in_o the_o world_n as_o which_o way_n almost_o can_v we_o turn_v our_o eye_n but_o we_o see_v it_o even_o the_o very_a print_n of_o death_n how_o his_o footing_n be_v in_o every_o town_n yea_o in_o every_o house_n present_o to_o think_v of_o sin_n and_o the_o greatness_n thereof_o and_o to_o make_v it_o a_o mean_n to_o make_v we_o have_v it_o in_o great_a detestation_n in_o who_o soever_o it_o be_v 2._o it_o be_v our_o sin_n that_o have_v provoke_v god_n to_o this_o wrath_n it_o be_v not_o the_o sin_n of_o angel_n that_o make_v god_n thus_o angry_a with_o mankind_n nor_o the_o sin_n of_o any_o particular_a person_n that_o make_v he_o angry_a with_o they_o all_o but_o it_o be_v our_o own_o sin_n that_o have_v do_v this_o all_o of_o we_o every_o mother_n son_n have_v our_o part_n and_o have_v join_v hand_n in_o provoke_v the_o lord_n to_o bring_v this_o universal_a mortality_n upon_o the_o world_n the_o true_a use_n therefore_o that_o we_o be_v to_o make_v of_o this_o be_v not_o so_o much_o to_o think_v of_o sin_n in_o general_a or_o of_o this_o or_o that_o body_n sin_n when_o we_o see_v the_o general_a judgement_n of_o god_n but_o to_o see_v and_o look_v after_o our_o own_o sin_n wherein_o we_o have_v trespass_v against_o god_n and_o break_v his_o law_n and_o not_o rest_v till_o we_o have_v find_v
go_n 4._o the_o more_o experience_n we_o shall_v have_v of_o this_o good_a providence_n of_o god_n the_o more_o let_v we_o be_v ready_a to_o give_v the_o praise_n and_o glory_n thereof_o to_o god_n and_o show_v ourselves_o in_o our_o deep_a thought_n of_o mortality_n to_o be_v such_o as_o yet_o do_v acknowledge_v god_n to_o have_v be_v in_o all_o age_n a_o habitation_n unto_o he_o and_o at_o all_o time_n unto_o us._n 5._o let_v we_o delight_v only_o in_o this_o mansion_n which_o we_o can_v let_v nor_o loose_v which_o will_v not_o leave_v we_o when_o we_o leave_v this_o world_n but_o he_o for_o ever_o and_o ever_o this_o praise_n of_o god_n do_v fit_a that_o present_a argument_n which_o the_o prophet_n have_v in_o hand_n and_o tend_v to_o moderate_v and_o keep_v in_o compass_n immoderate_a sorrow_n that_o may_v arise_v either_o from_o the_o consideration_n of_o our_o own_o mortality_n or_o the_o mortality_n of_o any_o other_o for_o that_o notwithstanding_o the_o change_n and_o alteration_n that_o we_o see_v in_o the_o world_n that_o may_v discourage_v we_o and_o breed_v distrust_n and_o diffidence_n in_o we_o yet_o if_o we_o be_v the_o true_a child_n of_o god_n we_o have_v have_v a_o true_a feel_n and_o sense_n of_o his_o love_n and_o special_a providence_n over_o us._n and_o if_o we_o have_v once_o feel_v it_o indeed_o there_o be_v no_o cause_n but_o to_o hope_v for_o the_o continuance_n thereof_o for_o as_o he_o be_v a_o eternal_a god_n so_o his_o love_n be_v a_o eternal_a love_n it_o be_v before_o all_o world_n and_o shall_v be_v for_o ever_o and_o ever_o be_v therefore_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n upon_o thou_o do_v thou_o see_v and_o feel_v thyself_o to_o be_v mortal_a do_v thou_o see_v those_o thou_o depende_v upon_o to_o be_v such_o what_o do_v thou_o where_o god_n speak_v of_o adam_n dust_n thou_o be_v and_o to_o dust_n thou_o shall_v return_v as_o if_o he_o shall_v 19_o say_v o_o lord_n thou_o that_o have_v make_v and_o frame_v man_n of_o the_o dust_n of_o the_o earth_n thou_o beat_v he_o to_o dust_n again_o and_o as_o thou_o make_v he_o by_o thy_o word_n alone_o so_o with_o thy_o word_n thou_o sudden_o turn_v and_o beat_v he_o again_o to_o dust_n as_o a_o man_n that_o make_v a_o thing_n and_o present_o mar_v it_o again_o hence_o we_o learn_v 1._o that_o as_o it_o be_v god_n by_o who_o we_o live_v so_o it_o be_v he_o by_o who_o and_o who_o mean_v we_o die_v by_o what_o mean_v soever_o man_n come_v to_o their_o end_n whether_o by_o a_o timely_a or_o untimely_a death_n god_n have_v the_o main_a stroke_n the_o sword_n that_o take_v day_n then_o yesterday_o and_o this_o hour_n then_o the_o hour_n that_o be_v past_a and_o though_o some_o walk_v backward_o more_o slow_o somewhat_o then_o other_o do_v yet_o all_o go_v one_o way_n live_n here_o how_o we_o shall_v do_v for_o this_o year_n and_o the_o next_o and_o the_o other_o year_n after_o that_o and_o how_o our_o child_n shall_v do_v after_o we_o never_o take_v think_v for_o the_o main_a which_o be_v as_o if_o parent_n and_o child_n be_v altogether_o draw_v upon_o a_o sle_z or_o carry_v in_o a_o cart_n for_o diverse_a day_n to_o execution_n and_o the_o mean_n of_o this_o life_n be_v leave_v they_o only_o for_o this_o end_n to_o bring_v they_o thither_o they_o shall_v never_o trouble_v their_o mind_n about_o that_o that_o they_o be_v draw_v unto_o but_o shall_v be_v cark_n and_o care_v how_o they_o shall_v do_v and_o their_o child_n for_o this_o thing_n and_o that_o thing_n concern_v this_o life_n the_o second_o point_n be_v that_o our_o day_n go_v thus_o backward_o in_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n that_o be_v to_o say_v through_o the_o just_a judgement_n of_o god_n upon_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o our_o day_n thus_o return_v that_o pass_v over_o our_o head_n but_o we_o may_v easy_o perceive_v it_o if_o we_o be_v not_o besot_v mark_v with_o god_n wrath_n bring_v with_o it_o some_o judgement_n and_o memorandum_n or_o other_o of_o god_n anger_n for_o sin_n there_o be_v not_o a_o day_n nor_o hour_n that_o pass_v over_o our_o head_n but_o that_o we_o may_v if_o we_o look_v about_o we_o and_o consider_v the_o judgement_n that_o some_o way_n or_o other_o cleave_v to_o we_o see_v that_o it_o be_v in_o some_o respect_n or_o other_o pass_v away_o in_o wrath_n the_o use_n of_o this_o serve_v 1._o to_o reprove_v those_o that_o have_v no_o sense_n and_o fecle_v thereof_o but_o so_o pass_v away_o their_o time_n and_o day_n whilst_o they_o have_v they_o as_o though_o they_o be_v under_o no_o wrath_n and_o judgement_n at_o all_o but_o all_o be_v well_o and_o sure_a between_o god_n and_o they_o that_o glory_n in_o their_o day_n past_a how_o merry_o they_o have_v live_v and_o how_o many_o comfort_n they_o have_v have_v such_o as_o never_o feel_v any_o wrath_n of_o god_n past_a nor_o fear_v any_o to_o come_v but_o say_v ordinary_o in_o their_o mad_a mood_n away_o with_o sorrow_n let_v the_o world_n desperate_a madness_n when_o we_o shall_v perceive_v that_o god_n for_o the_o time_n past_a have_v show_v himself_o angry_a with_o we_o to_o have_v no_o care_n for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v to_o prevent_v further_a indignation_n 4._o this_o shall_v make_v the_o child_n of_o god_n that_o have_v any_o ground_a hope_n for_o life_n to_o come_v to_o lessen_v their_o stay_n on_o and_o delight_v in_o this_o life_n and_o delight_n in_o their_o hope_n and_o mean_n of_o that_o life_n wherein_o never_o a_o day_n shall_v pass_v away_o in_o wrath_n but_o all_o in_o love_n favour_n and_o glory_n and_o wherein_o the_o day_n of_o our_o life_n shall_v not_o be_v a_o return_v to_o death_n but_o a_o go_v on_o from_o life_n to_o life_n and_o joy_n to_o joy_n when_o we_o shall_v live_v to_o live_v person_n will_v think_v how_o mortal_a they_o and_o their_o child_n be_v how_o short_a a_o time_n they_o have_v to_o live_v here_o how_o they_o be_v carry_v away_o as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o flood_n they_o and_o their_o child_n and_o all_o else_o these_o matter_n will_v never_o so_o much_o run_v in_o their_o head_n neither_o will_v they_o vex_v and_o trouble_v themselves_o and_o other_o so_o much_o about_o they_o as_o they_o do_v but_o now_o we_o dream_v of_o immortality_n in_o this_o life_n and_o put_v from_o we_o as_o much_o as_o we_o can_v the_o hour_n of_o our_o death_n so_o live_v and_o desire_v to_o live_v here_o as_o if_o we_o shall_v live_v ever_o here_o or_o there_o be_v no_o live_n else_o where_o be_v not_o they_o stark_o mad_a that_o see_v their_o child_n carry_v away_o with_o a_o flood_n struggle_v and_o breathe_v in_o the_o water_n for_o life_n and_o ready_a to_o be_v drown_v and_o no_o hope_n of_o pull_v they_o out_o will_v be_v cark_n and_o care_v and_o vex_v themselves_o how_o they_o shall_v provide_v for_o they_o nay_o let_v christian_n see_v their_o life_n be_v so_o short_a here_o comfort_v themselves_o in_o their_o want_n and_o their_o child_n and_o labour_n so_o that_o small_a time_n they_o have_v to_o live_v that_o after_o this_o short_a and_o transitory_a life_n they_o and_o their_o child_n may_v live_v eternal_o in_o heaven_n they_o be_v as_o what_o soon_o pass_v away_o what_o be_v easy_o break_v off_o then_o sleep_v how_o short_a also_o be_v the_o pleasure_n and_o sorrow_n that_o be_v in_o sleep_n sure_o the_o whole_a state_n and_o short_a it_o seem_v to_o be_v and_o as_o it_o be_v but_o short_a of_o itself_o though_o it_o shall_v last_v the_o full_a swinge_n of_o nature_n so_o the_o sound_a sleep_n be_v easy_o break_v the_o least_o knock_n the_o low_a call_n put_v man_n out_o of_o it_o and_o a_o number_n of_o mean_n and_o occasion_n there_o be_v to_o interrupt_v and_o break_v it_o off_o and_o be_v not_o it_o so_o with_o the_o life_n of_o man_n be_v not_o the_o long_a life_n short_a be_v it_o not_o the_o short_a the_o sweet_a and_o full_a of_o content_n it_o be_v and_o be_v it_o not_o easy_o take_v away_o be_v there_o not_o many_o mean_n to_o bring_v we_o unto_o our_o end_n even_o as_o many_o as_o there_o be_v to_o waken_v we_o out_o of_o sleep_n for_o the_o four_o how_o many_o error_n be_v we_o subject_a to_o in_o sleep_n in_o sleep_v the_o prisoner_n many_o time_n dream_n that_o he_o be_v at_o liberty_n he_o that_o be_v at_o liberty_n that_o he_o be_v in_o prison_n he_o that_o be_v hungry_a that_o he_o be_v feed_v dainty_o he_o that_o be_v in_o want_n that_o he_o be_v in_o great_a abundance_n he_o that_o abound_v that_o he_o be_v in_o great_a want_n how_o many_o in_o their_o sleep_n have_v think_v they_o have_v get_v that_o which_o they_o shall_v be_v better_o for_o for_o ever_o and_o when_o they_o be_v even_o in_o the_o hope_n of_o present_a possess_v some_o such_o goodly_a matter_n or_o beginning_n so_o for_o evil_a and_o sorrow_n as_o well_o and_o be_v it_o not_o just_a so_o in_o the_o life_n of_o man_n who_o life_n pass_v soon_o away_o or_o swift_a than_o they_o that_o have_v most_o comfort_n and_o sweet_a who_o life_n be_v long_a than_o they_o in_o seem_v that_o live_v least_o at_o ease_n who_o be_v ordinary_o more_o bind_v more_o in_o trouble_n have_v great_a vexation_n and_o disquiet_v than_o those_o that_o have_v most_o liberty_n and_o abundance_n who_o be_v free_a and_o more_o at_o liberty_n and_o want_v least_o than_o they_o that_o have_v least_o how_o ordinary_a a_o thing_n be_v it_o for_o man_n in_o the_o most_o abundance_n to_o be_v least_o satisfy_v and_o in_o the_o poor_a cottage_n to_o find_v the_o great_a content_n and_o how_o sudden_o be_v man_n even_o as_o if_o they_o have_v be_v in_o a_o dream_n cut_v off_o from_o all_o their_o hope_n all_o their_o delight_n and_o pleasure_n that_o in_o this_o world_n they_o enjoy_v the_o use_n hereof_o then_o be_v 1._o to_o teach_v we_o to_o account_v of_o the_o thing_n that_o mere_o concern_v this_o life_n the_o profit_n the_o pleasure_n the_o honour_n of_o it_o but_o as_o of_o dream_n such_o as_o be_v transitory_a and_o pass_v away_o as_o a_o sleep_n that_o we_o can_v have_v no_o certainty_n or_o assurement_n of_o but_o such_o as_o we_o may_v be_v deprive_v of_o even_o as_o easy_o as_o we_o may_v be_v break_v of_o our_o sleep_n 2._o to_o watch_v and_o take_v heed_n how_o we_o look_v to_o place_v any_o settle_a comfort_n in_o this_o life_n or_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n for_o we_o shall_v find_v as_o many_o error_n in_o it_o and_o the_o thing_n thereof_o as_o we_o do_v in_o sleep_n man_n may_v fancy_v this_o and_o that_o but_o the_o issue_n will_v be_v nothing_o no_o more_o then_o of_o he_o who_o go_v to_o bed_v hungry_a dream_v he_o eat_v etc._n etc._n 3._o this_o shall_v teach_v christian_n not_o to_o envy_v and_o malice_n the_o comfort_n honour_n and_o prosperity_n of_o wicked_a man_n for_o they_o be_v but_o as_o dream_n thou_o have_v much_o cause_n have_v thou_o not_o to_o envy_v a_o poor_a man_n that_o he_o shall_v fare_v dainty_o in_o a_o dream_n 4._o it_o shall_v make_v we_o think_v the_o less_o of_o the_o sorrow_n and_o misery_n of_o this_o life_n that_o either_o ourselves_o or_o other_o endure_v ourselves_o here_o be_v but_o as_o a_o sleep_n the_o sorrow_n that_o we_o endure_v delude_v herein_o 5._o never_o to_o think_v that_o we_o do_v the_o action_n of_o man_n that_o be_v true_o wake_v but_o when_o we_o do_v the_o action_n that_o concern_v the_o life_n to_o come_v where_o we_o shall_v ever_o watch_v and_o need_v no_o sleep_n where_o we_o shall_v ever_o rejoice_v and_o never_o be_v delude_v in_o the_o morning_n they_o be_v like_o grass_n that_o grow_v verse_n 6._o in_o the_o morning_n it_o flourish_v and_o grow_v up_o in_o the_o evening_n it_o be_v cut_v down_o and_o wither_v the_o three_o comparison_n follow_v wherein_o the_o life_n of_o man_n be_v compare_v to_o grass_n that_o as_o it_o be_v with_o grass_n a_o man_n shall_v see_v it_o flourish_v in_o the_o morning_n and_o the_o same_o day_n cut_v down_o and_o wither_v so_o be_v man_n this_o day_n flourish_v and_o lusty_a and_o to_o morrow_n lay_v in_o the_o dust_n nay_o as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o morning_n well_o and_o before_o night_n he_o and_o all_o his_o strength_n and_o glory_n vanish_v and_o go_v 1._o the_o consideration_n of_o this_o shall_v teach_v man_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o their_o glory_n and_o state_n in_o this_o life_n to_o think_v what_o a_o fade_a thing_n it_o be_v how_o soon_o it_o be_v cut_v down_o and_o wither_v and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v take_v heed_n how_o we_o set_v our_o heart_n upon_o these_o transitory_a thing_n for_o as_o meadow_n when_o they_o be_v most_o pleasant_a and_o full_a of_o variety_n of_o flower_n they_o be_v then_o sudden_o cut_v down_o and_o all_o the_o beauty_n of_o they_o vanish_v so_o it_o shall_v be_v with_o all_o thing_n that_o in_o this_o world_n we_o delight_v in_o whether_o life_n or_o honour_n and_o riches_n though_o a_o man_n flourish_v never_o so_o much_o in_o they_o yet_o as_o it_o be_v the_o same_o day_n they_o shall_v be_v take_v from_o he_o and_o he_o from_o they_o and_o then_o their_o heart_n will_v be_v as_o go_v with_o they_o that_o have_v their_o heart_n before_o set_v on_o
they_o out_o especial_o when_o the_o lord_n by_o any_o special_a judgement_n shall_v come_v near_o unto_o we_o as_o the_o lord_n have_v late_o to_o this_o family_n if_o we_o hereupon_o do_v not_o make_v a_o special_a inquisition_n after_o our_o sin_n and_o so_o by_o repentance_n make_v our_o peace_n with_o god_n we_o have_v cause_n even_o every_o one_o of_o we_o to_o fear_v a_o great_a stroke_n though_o this_o have_v make_v many_o of_o our_o heart_n to_o ache_v 3._o they_o be_v not_o only_o our_o great_a sin_n that_o have_v provoke_v god_n but_o all_o our_o sin_n great_a and_o small_a not_o our_o public_a only_a and_o know_v sin_n but_o our_o special_a and_o hide_a one_o every_o one_o of_o they_o have_v his_o part_n herein_o and_o if_o we_o will_v not_o have_v this_o wrath_n of_o god_n to_o pursue_v we_o eternal_o we_o must_v learn_v hence_o not_o only_o to_o hate_v and_o forsake_v our_o great_a sin_n and_o to_o repent_v of_o those_o that_o be_v great_a and_o notorious_a but_o even_o of_o our_o small_a sin_n of_o our_o light_a vanity_n also_o yea_o herein_o we_o shall_v not_o content_v ourselves_o with_o leave_v those_o sin_n which_o other_o and_o ourselves_o know_v to_o be_v sin_n but_o we_o shall_v seek_v after_o our_o secret_a and_o hide_a sin_n whither_o there_o be_v not_o some_o sin_n in_o we_o that_o we_o nourish_v in_o ourselves_o and_o know_v not_o to_o be_v sin_n and_o to_o this_o end_n we_o shall_v diligent_o search_v into_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o not_o be_v at_o rest_n till_o we_o have_v take_v notice_n of_o they_o and_o give_v no_o leave_n of_o continuance_n to_o any_o the_o least_o sin_n but_o hate_v and_o forsake_v all_o 4._o that_o all_o our_o sin_n be_v present_a before_o god._n our_o great_a our_o small_a our_o know_a our_o secret_a sin_n they_o be_v all_o in_o his_o presence_n they_o be_v before_o his_o eye_n he_o know_v they_o he_o see_v and_o behold_v they_o this_o shall_v make_v we_o the_o more_o hay_n nousnesse_n of_o all_o sin_n for_o those_o trespass_n that_o be_v commit_v before_o the_o face_n of_o a_o governor_n be_v account_v contempt_n so_o be_v every_o sin_n commit_v it_o be_v commit_v in_o the_o ear_n and_o eye_n of_o god_n and_o be_v therefore_o the_o more_o grievous_a and_o odious_a 5._o god_n need_v no_o other_o light_n to_o discern_v our_o sin_n by_o but_o the_o light_n of_o his_o own_o face_n it_o peirce_v through_o the_o dark_a place_n the_o brightness_n thereof_o enlighten_v all_o thing_n discover_v all_o thing_n so_o that_o the_o sin_n that_o be_v commit_v in_o deep_a darkness_n be_v all_o one_o to_o he_o as_o if_o they_o be_v do_v in_o the_o face_n of_o the_o sun_n for_o they_o be_v do_v in_o his_o face_n that_o shine_v more_o and_o from_o which_o proceed_v more_o light_a than_o from_o the_o face_n of_o the_o sun_n so_o that_o this_o it_o ought_v to_o make_v we_o the_o more_o fearful_a to_o offend_v he_o see_v we_o when_o we_o see_v not_o he_o and_o the_o light_n of_o his_o countenance_n shine_v about_o we_o when_o we_o think_v ourselves_o hide_v in_o darkness_n 6._o they_o be_v not_o only_o then_o in_o his_o sight_n when_o they_o be_v a_o commit_v and_o whilst_o the_o deed_n be_v do_v but_o ever_o after_o when_o the_o act_n be_v past_a and_o go_v and_o forget_v yet_o then_o be_v it_o before_o the_o face_n of_o god_n even_o as_o if_o it_o be_v in_o commit_v and_o how_o shall_v this_o make_v we_o afraid_a to_o sin_n when_o our_o sin_n be_v not_o only_o in_o his_o sight_n while_o they_o be_v a_o commit_v but_o so_o continue_v still_o for_o ever_o after_o they_o be_v past_a and_o do_v 7._o god_n set_v our_o sin_n before_o he_o this_o show_v he_o be_v so_o affect_v with_o they_o he_o take_v they_o so_o to_o heart_n that_o he_o do_v in_o a_o special_a manner_n continue_v the_o remembrance_n of_o they_o as_o those_o that_o have_v have_v great_a wrong_n will_v store_v it_o up_o or_o register_v it_o or_o keep_v some_o remembrance_n of_o it_o or_o other_o lest_o they_o shall_v forget_v when_o time_n shall_v serve_v to_o be_v quit_v with_o those_o that_o have_v wrong_v they_o so_o do_v god_n and_o his_o so-doing_a be_v a_o sign_n that_o he_o take_v our_o sin_n deep_o to_o heart_n which_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o fear_v the_o more_o how_o we_o offend_v he_o when_o god_n in_o any_o judgement_n of_o death_n or_o sickness_n or_o loss_n of_o friend_n show_v his_o wrath_n we_o shall_v think_v and_o meditate_v of_o this_o especial_o when_o he_o come_v near_o we_o now_o the_o lord_n look_v upon_o my_o sin_n they_o be_v now_o before_o he_o and_o we_o shall_v never_o rest_v till_o we_o have_v by_o repentance_n move_v he_o to_o blot_v they_o out_o yea_o to_o this_o end_n we_o shall_v ourselves_o call_v they_o to_o remembrance_n for_o the_o more_o we_o remember_v they_o the_o more_o god_n forget_v they_o the_o more_o we_o forget_v they_o the_o more_o god_n remember_v they_o the_o more_o we_o look_v upon_o ourselves_o the_o more_o he_o turn_v his_o eye_n from_o they_o and_o this_o also_o we_o be_v to_o manifest_v and_o acknowledge_v as_o here_o moses_n do_v unto_o god_n himself_o by_o prayer_n verse_n 9_o for_o all_o our_o day_n 〈◊〉_d go_v back_o again_o in_o thy_o wrath_n hitherto_o of_o the_o cause_n of_o that_o wrath_n of_o god_n which_o move_v he_o to_o smite_v the_o world_n with_o such_o they_o from_o their_o first_o beginning_n to_o live_v go_v backward_o again_o to_o death_n and_o to_o nothing_o this_o be_v the_o sum_n in_o effect_n with_o that_o which_o the_o lord_n say_v in_o so_o be_v the_o year_n of_o a_o man_n especial_o if_o we_o compare_v they_o with_o thing_n above_o and_o with_o the_o day_n and_o year_n that_o we_o be_v to_o live_v in_o heaven_n so_o that_o let_v a_o man_n look_v back_o to_o the_o time_n pass_v and_o wise_o judge_v of_o it_o and_o set_v to_o it_o the_o uttermost_a of_o the_o time_n to_o come_v and_o all_o will_v appear_v to_o pass_v away_o from_o we_o either_o as_o the_o time_n wherein_o a_o tale_n be_v tell_v or_o those_o thing_n pass_v away_o that_o be_v tell_v in_o a_o tale_n which_o be_v very_o quick_o and_o speedy_o 1._o this_o show_v the_o vanity_n of_o they_o that_o make_v such_o ado_n for_o state_n and_o title_n and_o tenor_n for_o this_o life_n oh_o they_o think_v it_o a_o goodly_a matter_n if_o they_o have_v and_o hold_v a_o thing_n for_o so_o many_o life_n and_o for_o they_o and_o their_o child_n life_n and_o yet_o alas_o it_o be_v if_o it_o be_v compare_v with_o the_o life_n of_o heaven_n but_o as_o if_o it_o be_v a_o tenure_n for_o the_o space_n of_o a_o tale_n tell_v or_o a_o word_n speak_v and_o what_o madness_n then_o be_v it_o that_o most_o man_n show_v to_o hazard_v the_o one_o to_o get_v the_o other_o that_o they_o care_v not_o almost_o how_o they_o break_v the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o man_n for_o it_o sure_o the_o little_a faith_n and_o hope_n or_o none_o that_o we_o have_v of_o the_o life_n to_o come_v make_v person_n so_o dote_v and_o mad_a upon_o the_o title_n and_o tenor_n of_o this_o life_n which_o be_v of_o the_o same_o nature_n that_o our_o day_n and_o year_n be_v they_o pass_v away_o all_o alike_o 2._o it_o show_v also_o the_o vanity_n of_o such_o who_o as_o though_o their_o day_n and_o year_n will_v never_o come_v unto_o a_o end_n spend_v day_n after_o day_n and_o year_n after_o year_n in_o that_o they_o call_v pas-time_n whereas_o time_n pass_v away_o of_o itself_o swift_a enough_o and_o that_o in_o god_n wrath_n it_o be_v more_o agreeable_a to_o reason_n if_o it_o can_v be_v to_o use_v mean_n to_o hold_v and_o continue_v time_n rather_o than_o to_o pass_v it_o away_o 3._o let_v this_o teach_v we_o whilst_o we_o have_v it_o to_o make_v the_o best_a use_n we_o can_v of_o it_o when_o our_o year_n be_v go_v we_o can_v revoke_v they_o how_o soon_o they_o be_v go_v the_o holy_a ghost_n here_o teach_v and_o we_o may_v feel_v by_o our_o own_o experience_n therefore_o whilst_o we_o live_v here_o let_v we_o not_o so_o much_o trouble_v our_o thought_n about_o the_o mean_n of_o this_o life_n as_o about_o devise_v how_o we_o may_v employ_v our_o time_n and_o spend_v our_o life_n to_o best_a purpose_n 4._o though_o we_o be_v to_o count_v the_o shortness_n of_o our_o life_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o misery_n thereof_o and_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o life_n which_o follow_v a_o blessing_n yet_o in_o itself_o we_o shall_v not_o so_o account_v of_o it_o but_o though_o it_o be_v miserable_a and_o the_o long_o it_o be_v the_o long_o it_o keep_v we_o from_o a_o better_a yet_o the_o very_a shortness_n of_o this_o miserable_a life_n be_v to_o be_v consider_v as_o a_o effect_n of_o god_n wrath_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v a_o blessing_n of_o god_n if_o we_o know_v how_o to_o use_v it_o to_o live_v long_o here_o though_o we_o shall_v live_v as_o miserable_a a_o life_n as_o any_o ever_o live_v neither_o shall_v we_o endeavour_v or_o desire_v to_o do_v any_o thing_n to_o shorten_v the_o same_o verse_n 10._o the_o day_n of_o our_o year_n be_v seventie_o year_n and_o if_o by_o reason_n of_o strength_n they_o be_v eighty_o year_n yet_o be_v their_o strength_n then_o labour_n and_o sorrow_n for_o it_o be_v soon_o cut_v off_o and_o we_o fly_v away_o in_o these_o word_n the_o prophet_n prove_v that_o which_o he_o say_v before_o that_o we_o spend_v our_o year_n as_o a_o tale_n that_o be_v tell_v the_o year_n of_o they_o which_o ordinary_o live_v the_o uttermost_a of_o their_o day_n be_v but_o threescore_o and_o ten_o and_o if_o any_o live_v till_o eighty_o through_o strength_n yet_o be_v their_o strength_n then_o labour_n and_o sorrow_n etc._n etc._n now_o if_o the_o long_a period_n of_o day_n that_o man_n ordinary_o live_v be_v so_o short_a a_o time_n and_o the_o long_a time_n fly_v so_o fast_o then_o well_o may_v the_o prophet_n say_v that_o our_o day_n pass_v away_o as_o a_o tale_n that_o be_v tell_v for_o those_o who_o by_o reason_n of_o their_o strength_n live_v till_o 35._o eighty_o year_n either_o they_o be_v man_n that_o undergo_v in_o this_o life_n many_o labour_n and_o travel_n and_o then_o their_o very_a strength_n bring_v nothing_o unto_o they_o but_o matter_n of_o labour_n and_o sorrow_n for_o the_o strong_a a_o man_n have_v be_v and_o the_o great_a labour_n and_o travel_n he_o have_v undergo_v the_o more_o full_a of_o ache_n and_o pain_n be_v his_o old_a age_n wont_a to_o be_v or_o they_o live_v merry_o and_o cheerful_o free_a from_o ordinary_a passion_n and_o grievance_n and_o than_o their_o life_n fly_v away_o and_o when_o they_o be_v bring_v to_o these_o year_n their_o day_n be_v but_o day_n of_o sorrow_n and_o that_o with_o they_o the_o rather_o because_o they_o can_v follow_v those_o delight_n then_o that_o former_o they_o have_v do_v howsoever_o it_o be_v there_o be_v none_o common_o who_o day_n have_v seem_v to_o they_o to_o pass_v swift_a away_o than_o those_o that_o live_v the_o long_a none_o be_v less_o weary_a of_o life_n nor_o more_o unwilling_a to_o die_v common_o then_o they_o the_o life_n therefore_o of_o such_o though_o full_a of_o never_o so_o much_o sorrow_n and_o trouble_n fly_v away_o and_o such_o be_v the_o love_n that_o ordinary_o we_o bear_v to_o this_o life_n that_o though_o death_n come_v not_o till_o eighty_o year_n yet_o it_o seem_v the_o long_a that_o we_o can_v hope_v to_o live_v and_o not_o be_v child_n again_o be_v eighty_o year_n and_o then_o common_o we_o be_v as_o child_n again_o mew_v up_o and_o our_o child_n be_v either_o parent_n or_o lord_n over_o we_o use_v we_o as_o innocent_n 2._o it_o show_v the_o strange_a folly_n of_o so_o many_o of_o we_o as_o be_v come_v to_o the_o height_n and_o middle_n of_o our_o age_n yea_o to_o be_v fistie_a and_o upward_a yea_o to_o be_v sixty_o etc._n etc._n we_o can_v talk_v of_o our_o day_n past_a and_o of_o thing_n we_o do_v forty_o year_n since_o as_o if_o they_o be_v do_v but_o yesterday_o and_o for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v though_o we_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o hope_v it_o shall_v be_v as_o much_o as_o we_o have_v spend_v and_o though_o we_o may_v presume_v it_o will_v fly_v as_o fast_o away_o as_o that_o which_o be_v pass_v in_o the_o whole_a though_o not_o in_o the_o part_n yet_o we_o live_v as_o though_o we_o have_v a_o 100_o year_n yea_o a_o 1060_o year_n to_o come_v yea_o you_o shall_v have_v many_o that_o be_v of_o 60._o 70._o yea_o 80._o year_n that_o have_v no_o more_o care_n to_o fit_v they_o to_o death_n but_o put_v the_o hour_n thereof_o as_o far_o from_o they_o as_o if_o they_o be_v in_o their_o fresh_a youth_n if_o some_o live_v a_o 100_o some_o 500_o some_o a_o 1000_o some_o 10000_o year_n among_o we_o as_o now_o they_o live_v some_o 5._o some_o 10._o some_o 40._o some_o 60._o some_o 70._o etc._n etc._n there_o may_v be_v some_o colour_n for_o this_o folly_n but_o see_v one_o of_o 500_o life_n not_o till_o 60._o one_o of_o 5000._o till_o 80._o one_o of_o 100000._o till_o a_o hundred_o none_o till_o 200._o what_o madness_n it_o be_v then_o especial_o in_o those_o that_o have_v pass_v the_o great_a time_n they_o can_v expect_v to_o have_v no_o care_n of_o the_o hour_n of_o death_n and_o of_o the_o account_n they_o shall_v then_o make_v when_o their_o whole_a time_n be_v but_o short_a as_o a_o tale_n that_o
be_v tell_v as_o you_o shall_v have_v old_a man_n in_o a_o tale_n of_o less_o than_o a_o hour_n long_o run_v over_o all_o their_o life_n verse_n 11._o who_o know_v the_o power_n of_o thy_o anger_n even_o according_a to_o thy_o fear_n so_o be_v thy_o wrath_n the_o prophet_n in_o this_o 11._o verse_n conclude_v his_o complaint_n and_o in_o the_o same_o complain_v of_o the_o dulness_n of_o mankind_n that_o whereas_o god_n show_v such_o sign_n of_o his_o wrath_n they_o have_v no_o sense_n or_o understanding_n of_o the_o power_n thereof_o the_o second_o part_n of_o this_o verse_n be_v somewhat_o doubtful_a word_n for_o word_n in_o the_o hebrew_n it_o be_v thus_o and_o according_a to_o thy_o fear_n thy_o wrath_n our_o translatour_n as_o you_o hear_v translate_v it_o otherwise_o and_o therein_o follow_v learned_a man_n that_o go_v before_o they_o and_o the_o word_n if_o necessity_n require_v it_o will_v bear_v such_o a_o construction_n and_o teach_v a_o profitable_a truth_n to_o wit_n that_o howsoever_o the_o wicked_a do_v not_o know_v the_o 〈◊〉_d of_o god_n wrath_n yet_o those_o that_o fear_n god_n know_v and_o understand_v the_o same_o but_o i_o have_v rather_o here_o take_v the_o word_n more_o simple_o and_o read_v they_o thus_o who_o know_v the_o 〈◊〉_d of_o thy_o anger_n and_o of_o thy_o power_n wrath_n according_a to_o thy_o fear_n that_o be_v to_o say_v how_o rare_a a_o thing_n be_v it_o to_o find_v a_o man_n that_o have_v any_o true_a sense_n and_o understanding_n of_o this_o thy_o mighty_a wrath_n or_o that_o make_v any_o religious_a use_n thereof_o the_o first_o doctrine_n we_o hence_o observe_v be_v that_o christian_n ought_v to_o mark_v and_o observe_v the_o power_n and_o force_v of_o god_n wrath_n in_o all_o those_o particular_n wherein_o he_o show_v it_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o we_o to_o know_v that_o god_n be_v a_o merciful_a god_n and_o love_v and_o gracious_a but_o we_o must_v know_v also_o that_o he_o be_v a_o angry_a and_o a_o wrathful_a god_n yea_o that_o he_o be_v exceed_o angry_a when_o he_o be_v provoke_v the_o unto_o and_o therefore_o we_o must_v not_o only_o consider_v and_o understand_v the_o sign_n token_n and_o effect_n of_o his_o love_n and_o kindness_n in_o the_o world_n but_o the_o sign_n of_o his_o wrath_n also_o for_o in_o both_o he_o manifest_v himself_o and_o from_o both_o he_o look_v to_o reap_v glory_n and_o he_o be_v no_o less_o powerful_a in_o the_o one_o then_o in_o the_o other_o and_o in_o our_o life_n and_o conversation_n there_o be_v as_o much_o use_n of_o the_o one_o as_o of_o the_o other_o yea_o a_o man_n shall_v never_o be_v able_a to_o discern_v or_o make_v any_o good_a and_o true_a use_n of_o god_n love_n that_o do_v not_o first_o regard_n mark_v and_o labour_n to_o understand_v his_o wrath_n the_o second_o doctrine_n be_v that_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o know_v that_o god_n be_v angry_a but_o that_o his_o anger_n be_v powerful_a he_o be_v mighty_a in_o his_o wrath_n vanae_fw-la sine_fw-la viribus_fw-la irae_fw-la that_o anger_n that_o be_v without_o strength_n be_v nothing_o and_o therefore_o to_o be_v fear_v and_o tremble_v at_o many_o of_o we_o can_v talk_v of_o and_o observe_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n in_o this_o or_o that_o particular_a but_o we_o use_v to_o make_v a_o matter_n of_o nothing_o of_o it_o we_o be_v not_o ordinary_o affect_v with_o it_o so_o much_o as_o with_o the_o anger_n of_o any_o man_n that_o have_v but_o the_o least_o power_n to_o hurt_v us._n but_o the_o less_o we_o mark_v and_o know_v it_o here_o the_o more_o we_o shall_v know_v and_o feel_v it_o hereafter_o the_o three_o doctrine_n that_o the_o greatness_n and_o force_n of_o god_n wrath_n shine_v and_o show_v itself_o in_o the_o mortality_n of_o mankind_n aforesaid_a so_o that_o if_o there_o be_v no_o other_o argument_n to_o show_v that_o god_n be_v angry_a and_o that_o his_o anger_n be_v exceed_o powerful_a the_o general_a mortality_n of_o mankind_n be_v sufficient_a to_o show_v the_o same_o who_o can_v deny_v that_o he_o be_v angry_a when_o he_o drown_v the_o whole_a world_n when_o he_o destroy_v the_o first_o bear_v in_o egypt_n when_o he_o overwhelm_v the_o host_n of_o the_o egyptian_n in_o the_o red_a sea_n when_o he_o destroy_v all_o his_o own_o people_n in_o the_o wilderness_n that_o come_v out_o of_o egypt_n very_o if_o we_o can_v well_o consider_v of_o the_o matter_n it_o can_v be_v no_o less_o sign_n of_o god_n wrath_n that_o at_o some_o time_n or_o other_o after_o after_o some_o manner_n or_o other_o every_o man_n in_o the_o world_n must_v die_v and_o that_o so_o many_o age_n before_o we_o be_v dead_a the_o four_o doctrine_n that_o it_o be_v a_o rare_a thing_n for_o any_o man_n to_o conceive_v aright_o or_o to_o understand_v that_o god_n be_v angry_a or_o that_o there_o be_v any_o such_o fear_n in_o his_o anger_n many_o so_o live_v and_o follow_v such_o course_n as_o if_o they_o be_v persuade_v that_o god_n can_v not_o be_v angry_a or_o that_o if_o he_o be_v angry_a it_o be_v as_o easy_a a_o matter_n to_o please_v he_o as_o a_o child_n hence_o when_o they_o have_v over-shot_a themselves_o in_o any_o sin_n if_o they_o say_v god_n forgive_v i_o or_o i_o cry_v god_n mercy_n they_o think_v all_o be_v well_o and_o they_o shall_v never_o hear_v more_o of_o the_o matter_n when_o man_n trespass_n against_o a_o man_n if_o they_o think_v they_o have_v hinder_v themselves_o by_o it_o how_o careful_a how_o diligent_a be_v they_o to_o pacify_v his_o anger_n and_o to_o seek_v to_o regain_v his_o favour_n and_o good_a will_v again_o whereas_o the_o neglect_n hereof_o to_o god-ward_o when_o they_o have_v offend_v he_o show_v evident_o that_o they_o little_o regard_v his_o anger_n or_o esteem_v it_o not_o prejudicial_a at_o all_o to_o they_o the_o five_o doctrine_n that_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o know_v the_o force_n of_o god_n wrath_n but_o we_o must_v make_v a_o right_a use_n thereof_o we_o must_v thereby_o be_v stir_v up_o to_o fear_v the_o lord_n and_o to_o tremble_v before_o his_o majesty_n and_o take_v heed_n how_o any_o thing_n may_v either_o incense_v or_o continue_v his_o anger_n and_o we_o shall_v take_v heed_n also_o how_o his_o anger_n provoke_v we_o to_o anger_n or_o to_o any_o sin_n whatsoever_o that_o may_v further_o provoke_v he_o verse_n 12._o so_o teach_v we_o to_o number_v our_o day_n that_o we_o may_v apply_v our_o heart_n unto_o wisdom_n hitherto_o of_o the_o prophet_n complaint_n of_o the_o mortality_n of_o mankind_n now_o unto_o this_o
