I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus Thou hast chastised me and I was chastised as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoak Turn thou me and I shall be turned thou art the Lord my God V. 19. Surely after that I was turned I repented and after that I was instructed I smote upon my thigh I was ashamed yea even confounded because I did bear the reproach of my youth and hates his sins p 2 Cor. 7. 11. For behold this self same thing that ye sorrowed after a godly sort what carefulness it wrought in you yea what cleering of your selves yea what indignation yea what fear yea what vehement desire yea what zeal yea what revenge in all things ye have approved your selves to be cleer in this matter as that he turns from them all to God q Act. 26. 18. To open their eyes and to turn them from darkness to light and from the power of Satan unto God that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among them that are sanctified by faith that is in me Ezek. 14. 6. Therefore say unto the house of Israel Thus saith the Lord God Repent and turn your selves from your Idols and turn away your faces from all your abominations 1 King 8. 47 48. Yet if they shall bethink themselves in the land whither they were carried captives and repent and make supplication to thee in the land of them that carried them captives saying We have sinned and done perversly we have committed wickedness V. 48. And so return unto thee with all their heart and with all their soul purposing and endeavouring constantly to walk with him in all the wayes of new obedience r Psal 119. 6-59 -28 Then shall not I be ashamed when I have respect unto all thy commandments V. 59. I intreated thy favour with my whole heart be merciful unto me according to thy word V. 28. My soul melteth for heaviness strengthen thou me according unto thy word Luke 1. 6. And they were both righteous before God walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless 2 King 23. 25. And like unto him was there no King before him that turned to the Lord with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his might according to all the Law of Moses neither after him arose there any like him Q. Wherein do Justification and Sanctification differ A. Although Sanctification be inseparably joyned with Justification Å¿ 1 Cor. 6. 11. And such were some of you but ye are washed but ye are sanctified but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God 1 Cor. 1. 30. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus who of God is made unto us wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption yet they differ in that God in Justification imputeth the righteousness of Christ t Rom. 4. 6-8 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works V. 8. Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord will not impute sin in Sanctification his Spirit infuseth grace and enableth to the exercise thereof u Ezek. 36. 27. And I will put my Spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes and ye shall keep my judgements and do them in the former sin is pardoned * Rom. 3. 24 25. Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Jesus Christ V. 25. Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past through the forbearance of God in the other it is subdued x Rom. 6. 6-14 Knowing this that our old man is crucified with him that the body of sin might be destroyed that henceforth we should not serve sin V. 14. For sin shall not have dominion over you for ye are not under the law but under grace the one doth equally free all believers from the revenging wrath of God and that perfectly in this life that they never fall into condemnation y Rom. 8. 3 334. Who shall lay any thing to the charge of Gods elect It is God that justifieth who is he that condemneth It is Christ that died yea rather that is risen again who is even at the righthand of God who also maketh intercession for us the other is neither equal in all z 1 Joh. 2. 12 13 14. I write unto you little children because your sins are forgiven you for his names sake V. 13. I write unto you Fathers because ye
of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision onely but also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham which he had being yet uncircumcised 1 Pet. 3. 21. The like figure whereunto even batpisme doth also now save us not the putting away of the filth of the flesh but the answer of a good conscience towards God by the resurrection of Jesus Christ by drawing strength from the death and resurrection of Christ into whom we are baptized for the mortifying of sin and quickning of grace (t) Rom. 6. 3 4 5. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ to have our conversation in holinesse and righteousnesse (*) Rom. 6. 22. But now being made free from sin and become servants to God ye have your fruit unto holiness and the end everlasting life as those that have therein given up their names to Christ (x) Act. 2. 38. Then Peter said unto them Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost and to walk in brotherly love as being baptized by the same Spirit into one body (y) 1 Cor. 12. 13 25 26 27. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body whether we be Jewes or Gentiles bond or free and are all made to drink into one Spirit V. 25. That there should be no Schisme in the body but the members should have the same care one of another V. 26. And whether one member suffer all the members suffer with it or one member be honoured all the members rejoyce with it V. 27. Now ye are the body of Christ and members in particular Q. VVhat is the Lords Supper A. The Lords Supper is a Sacrament of the New Testament (z) Luk. 22 20. Likewise also the cup after supper saying This cup is the New Testament in my blood which is shed for you wherein by giving and receiving bread and wine according to the appointment of Jesus Christ his death is shewed forth and they that worthily communicate feed upon his body and blood to their spiritual nourishment and growth in grace (a) Mat. 26. 26 27 28. And as they were eating Jesus took bread and blessed it and brâ—ke it and gave it to the disciples and said Take eat this is my body V. 27. And he took the cup and gave thanks and gave it to them saying Drink ye all of it V. 28. For this is my blood of the New Testament which is shed for many for the remission of sins 1 Cor. 11. 23 24 25 26. For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you that the Lord Jesus in the same night wherein he was betrayed took bread V. 24. And when he had given thanks he brake it and said Take eat this is my body which is broken for you this do in remembrance of me V. 25. After the same manner also he took the Cup when he had Supped saying This Cup is the New Testament in my blood this do ye as oft as ye drink it in remembrance of me V. 26. For as often as ye eat this bread and drink this Cup ye shew the Lords death till he come have their union and communion with him confirmed (b) 1 Cor. 10. 16. The cup of blessing which we bless is it not the Communion of the blood of Christ and the bread which we break is it not the Communion of the body of Christ testifie and renew their thankfulnesse (c) 1 Cor. 11. 24 25 26. I speak as to wise men judge ye what I say V. 16. The cup of blessing which we blesse is it not the communion of the blood of Christ that bread which we break is it not the communion of the body of Christ V. 21. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of Devils ye cannot be partakers of the Lords table and of the table of Devils and their mutual love and fellowship each with other as members of the same mystical body (e) Cor. 10. 17. For we being many are one bread and one body for we are all partakers of that one bread Q. How hath Christ appointed bread and wine to be given and received in the Sacrament of the Lords Supper A. Christ hath appointed the Ministers of his Word in the administration of this Sacrament of the Lords Supper to set apart the bread and wine from common use by the word of institution thanksgiving and prayer to take and break the bread and to give both the bread and the Wine to the Communicants who are by the same appointment to take and eat the Bread and to drink the Wine in thankful remembrance that the body of Christ was broken and given and his blood shed for them (f) 1 Cor. 11. 23 24. Likewise also the cup after supper saying This cup is the New Testament in my blood which is shed for you Q. How do they that worthily communicate in the Lords Supper feed upon the body and blood of Christ therein A. As the body and blood of Christ are not corporally or carnally present in with or under the Bread and Wine in the Lords Supper (g) Act. 3. 21. Whom the heaven must receive until the time of the restitution of all things which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy Prophets since the world began and yet are spiritually present to the faith of the receiver no less truly and really then the elements themselves are to their outward senses (h) Mat. 26. 26-28 And as they were eating Jesus took bread and blessed it and brake it and gave it to the disciples and said Take eat this is my body V. 28. For as oft as ye eat this bread and drink this cup ye do shew the Lords death till he come Q. Which are the Sacraments of the New Testament A. The Sacraments of the New Testament are Baptisme (y) Mat. 28. 19. Go ye therefore and teach all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost and the Lords Supper (z) Mat. 26. 26. 27. 28. v. 26. And as they were eating Iesus took bread and blessed it and brake it and gave it to the Disciples and said Take eat this is my body v. 27. And he took the cup and gave thanks and gave it to them saying drink ye all of iâ— v. 28. For this is my blood of the New Testament which is shed for many for the remission of sins Q. What is Baptisme A. Baptisme is a Sacrament wherein the washing of Water in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy Ghost (a) Mat. 28. 19. See in letter y doth signifie and seal our ingrafting into Christ and partaking of the benefits of the Covenant of Grace and our engagement to the Lords (b) Rom. 6. 4. Therefore we are buried with him by baptisme into death that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the father even so we also should walk in newness of life Gal. 3. 27. For as many of you as have been Baptized into Christ have put on Christ Q. To whom is Baptisme to be administred A. Baptisme is not to be administred to any that are out of the visible Church till they profess their faith in Christ and obedience to him (c) Act. 8. 36. And as they went on their way they came unto a certain water and the Eunuch said see here is water what doth hinder me to be baptized V. 37. And Philip said if thou believest with all thine heart thou maist and he answered I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God Acts 2. 38. Then Peter said unto them repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the holy Ghost but the infants of such as are members of the visible Church are to be baptized (d) Acts 2. 38. See before V. 39. For the promise is unto you and to your children and to all that are a far off even as many as the Lord our God shall call Gen. 17. 10. See in letter x Col. 2. 11 12. In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ V. 12. Buried with him in Baptisme wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God who hath raised him from the dead 1 Cor. 7. 14. For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband else were your children unclean but now are they holy Q. What is the Lords Supper A. The Lords Supper is a Sacrament wherein by giving and receiving Bread and Wine according to Christs appointment his death is shewed forth and the worthy receivers are not after a corporal and carnal manner but by faith made partakers of his Body and Blood with all his benefits to their spiritual nourishment and groweth in grace e 1 Cor. 11. 23 34 25 26. But let a man examine himself and so let him eat of that Bread and drink of that Cup. V. 29. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily eateth and drinketh damnation to himself not discerning the Lords body of their faith to feed upon him (g) 2 Cor. 13. 5. Examine your selves whether ye be in the faith prove your own selves know you not that Jesus Christ is in you except ye be reprobates of their repentance (h) 1 Cor. 11. 31. For if we would judg our selves we should not be judged love (i) 1 Cor. 10. 16. The cup of blessing which we bless is it not the communion of the blood of Christ the bread which we break is it not the communion of the body of Christ V. 17. See in letter f Q. What is Prayer A. Prayer is an offering up of our desires unto God (m) Psal 62. 8. Trust in him at all times ye people pour out your hearts before him God is a refuge for us Selah for things agreeable to his will (n) 1 Ioh. 5. 14. And this is the confidence that we have in him that if we ask any thing according to his will he heareth us in the Name of Christ (o) Ioh. 16. 23. And in that day he shall ask me nothing verily verily I say unto you Whatsoever ye shall ask the father in my name he will give it you with confession of our sins (p) Psal 32. 5 6 I acknowledged my sins unto
people for his name and to this agree the words of the Prophets as it is written After this I will return and build again the Tabernacle of David which is fallen down and I will build again the ruines thereof and I will set it up Isai 55. 4 5. Behold I have given him for a witness to the people a leader and commander to the people Behold thou shalt call a nation that thou knowest not and nations that knew not thee shall run unto thee because of the Lord thy God and for the holy One of Israel for he hath glorified thee Gen. â—9 10. The scepter shall not depart from Judah nor a law-giver from between his feet until Shiloh come and unto him shall the gathering of the people be Psal 110. 3. Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning thou hast the dew of thy youth and giving them officers g Eph. 4. 11 12. And he gave some Apostles and some Prophets and some Evangelists and some Pastors and Teachers for the perfecting of the Saints for the work of the Ministery for the edifying of the body of Christ. 1 Cor. 12. 28. And God hath set some in the Church first Apostles secondarily Prophets thirdly Teachers after that Miracles then gifts of healings helps governments diversities of tongues Laws h Isai 33. 22. For the Lord is our judge the Lord is our Law-giver the Lord is our King he will save us and Censures by which he visibly governs them i Mat. 18. 17 18. And if he shall nâ—glect to hear them tell it to the Church but if he neglect to hear the Church let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a Publican Verily I say unto you Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven 1 Cor. 5. 4 5. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ when ye are gathered togâ—ther and my spirit with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ To deliver such a one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh that the Spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus in bestowing saving grace upon his elect k Act. 5. 31. Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour for to give repenâ—ance to Israel and forgiveness of sins rewarding their obedience l Rev. 22. 12. We know that all things work together for good to them who love God to them who are the called according to his purpose and also in taking vengeance on the rest who know not God and obey not the Gospel r 2 Thess 1. 8 9. In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God and that obey not the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his power Psal 2. 8 9. Ask of me and I shall give thee the Heathen for thine inheritance and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession Thou shalt break them with a rod of Iron thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potters vessel Q. What was the state of Christs humiliation A. The estate of Christs humiliation was that low condition wherein he for our sakes emptying himself of his glory took upon him the form of a servant in his Conception and Birth Life Death and after his death untill his resurrection Å¿ Phil. 2. 6 7 8. Who being in the form of God thought it no robbery to be equal with God but made himself of no reputation and took upon him the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of men and being found in fashion as a man he humbled himself and became obedient unto death even the death of the Cross Luke 1. 31. And behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb and bring forth a son and shalt call his name Jesus 2 Cor. 8. 9. For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ that though he was rich yet for your sakes he became poor that ye through his poverty might be rich Acts 2. 24. Whom God hath raised up having loosed the pains of death because it was not possible that he should be holden of it Q. How did Christ humble himself in his Conception and Birth A. Christ humbled himself in his Conception in that being from all eternity the Son of God in the Bosom of the Father he was pleased in the fulness of time to become the Son of Man made of a Woman of low estate and to be born of her with divers Circumstances of more then ordinary abasement t Joh. 1. 14-18 And the Word was made Flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld his glory the glory as of the onely begotten of the Father full of grace and truth V. 18. No man hath seen God at any time the onely begotten Son which is in the bosome of the Father he hath declared him Gal. 4. 4. But when the fulness of time was come God sent forth his Son made of a woman made under the Law Luke 2. 7. And she brought forth her first born Son and wrapped him in swadling-clothes and laid him in a manger because there was no room for them in the Inne Q. How did Christ humble himself in his life A. Christ humbled himself in his life by subjecting himself to the
Law u Gal. 4. 4. But when the fulnesse of time was come God sent forth his Son made of a woman made under the Law which he perfectly fulfilled * Mat. 5. 17. Think not that I am come to destroy the Law or the Prophets I am not come to destroy but to fulfill Rom. 5. 19. For as by one mans disobedience many were made sinners so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous and by conflicting with the indignities of the world x Psal 22. 6. But I am a worm and no man a reproach of men and despised of the people Heb. 12. 2 3. Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith who for the joy that was set before him endured the Cross despising the shame and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds temptations of Satan y Mat. 4. from v. 1. to v. 12. Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to he tempted of the Divel c. Luke 4. 13. And when the Divel had ended all the temptation he departed from him for a season and infirmities in his flesh whether common to the nature of man or particularly accompanying that his low condition z Heb. 2. 17 18. Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren that he might be a mercifull and faithful High-Priest in things pertaining to God to make reconciliation for the sins of the people For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted he is able to succour them that are tempted Heb. 4. 15. For we have not an High-Priest who cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities but was in all points tempted like as we are yet without sin Isa 52. 13 14. Behold my servant shall deal prudently he shall be exalted and extolled and be very high As many were astonished at thee his visage was so marred more then any man and his form more then the sons of men Q. How did Christ humble himself in his death A. Christ humbled himself in his death in that having been be rayed by Judas a Mat. 27. 4. Saying I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood and they said What is that to us see thou to that forsaken by his Disciples b Mat. 26. 56. But all this was done that the Scriptures of the Prophets might be fulfilled then all the Disciples forsook him and fled scorned and rejected by the World c Isai 53. 2 3. For he shal grow up before him as a tender plant and as a root out of a dry ground he hath no form nor comeliness and when we shall see him there is no beauty that we should desire him He is despised and rejected of men a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief and we hid as it were our faces from him he was despised and we esteemed him not condemned by Pilate and tormented by his Persecutors d Mat. 27. from ver 26. 10 v. 50. Then released he Barrabbas unto them and when he had scourged Jesus he delivered him to be crucified c. John 19. 34. But one of the souldiers with a spear pierced his side and forthwith came thereout blood and water having also conflicted with the terrors of death and the powers of darkness felt and born the weight of Gods wrath e Luke 22. 44. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground Mat. 27. 46. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voyce saying ELI ELI LAMA SABACTHANI that is to say My God my God why hast thou forsaken me he laid down his life an offering for sin f Isa 53. 10. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him he hath put him to grief When thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin he shall see his seed he shall prolong his dayes and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand enduring the painful shameful and cursed death of the cross g Phil. 2. 8. Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the Law being made a curse for us for it is written Cursed is every one that hangeth on the tree Q. Wherein consisted Christs humiliation after his death A. Christs humiliation after his death consisted in his being buried h 1 Cor. 15. 3 4. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures and that he was buried and that he rose again the third day according to the Scriptures and continuing in the state of the dead and under the power of death till the thirdday i Psal 16. 10. What was the estate of Christs exaltation A. The estate of Christs exaltation comprehendeth his resurrection k 1 Cor. 15. 4. Like as a Father pittieth his children so the Lord pittieth them that serve him Prov. 14. 26. In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence and his children shall have a place of refuge Mat. 6. 32. For your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things admitted to all the liberties and priviledges of the sons of God made heirs of all the promises and fellow-heirs with Christ in glory a Heb. 6. 12. That ye be not flothfull but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises Rom. 8. 17. And if children then heirs hoirs of God and joynt-heirs with Christ if so be that we suffer with him that we may be also glorified together Q. What is Sanctification A. Sanctification is a work of Gods grace whereby they whom God hath before the foundation of the world chosen to be holy are in time through the powerful operation of his Spirit b Eph. 1. 4. According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world that we should be holy and without blame before him in love 1 Cor. 6. 11. And such were some of you but ye are washed but ye are sanctified but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God 2 Thess 2. 13. But we are bound to give thanks to God alway for you brethren beloved of the Lord because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth applying the death and resurrection of Christ unto them c Rom. 6. 4 5 6. Therefore we are buried with him by Baptisme into death that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father even so we also should walk in newness of life V. 5. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection V. 6. Knowing this that our old man is crucified with him that the body of sin might be destroyed that henceforth we should not serve sin renewed in their whole man after the Image of God d Eph. 4. 23 24. That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing being fruitfull in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God V. 11. And I will pour upon the house of David and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and of supplications and they shall look on me whom they have pierced and mourn for him as one mourneth for his onely son and shall be in bitterness as one that is in bitterness for his first-born and word of God k Act. 11. 18 -20 21. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end upon the throne of David and upon his Kingdom to order it and to establish it with judgement and justice from henceforth even for ever the zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this Mat. 21. 5. Tell ye the daughter of Sion behold thy King cometh unto thee meek and sitting upon an ass and a coalt the foal of an ass Psal 2. 8. Ask of me and I will give thee the Heathen for thine inheritance and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession thou shalt break them with a rod of iron thou shalt dash them in pieces like a Potters vessel v. 10. Be wise now therefore O ye Kings be instructed ye judges of the earth v. 11. Serve the Lord with fear and rejoyce with trembling Q. How doth Christ execute the office of a Prophet A. Christ executeth the office of a Prophet in reveleing to us by his word and Spirit the will of God for our salvation (u) Ioh. 1. 18. No man hath seen God at any time the only begotten Son which is in the bosom of the Father he hath declared him 1 Pet. 1. 10. Of which salvation the Prophets have enquired and searched diligently who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you v. 11. Searching what or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signifie when it testified before-hand the sufferings of Christ and the glory which should follow v. 12. Unto whom it was reveled that not unto themselves but unto us they did minister the things which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the Gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven which things the Angels desire to look into Ioh. 15. 15. Henceforth I call you not servants for the servant knoweth not what his Lord doth but I have called you friends for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you Ioh. 20. 3â— These things are written that you might believe that Iesus is the Christ the Son of God and that believing you might have life through his name Q. How doth Christ execute the office of a Priest A. Christ executeth the office of a Priest in his once offering up of himself a sacrifice to satisfie divine Justice (*) Heb. 9. 14. How much more shall the blood of Christ who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God purge your consciences from dead works to serve the living God v. 28. So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time withouâ— sin unto salvation and reconcile us to God (x) Heb. 2 17. In all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren that he might be a marciful and faithful High-Priest in things pertaining to God to make reconciliation for the sins of the people and in making continual intercession for us (y) Heb. 7. 24. But this man because he continueth ever hath an unchangeable Priesthood v. 25. Wherefore he is able to save to the uttermost those that come to God by him seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them Q. How doth Christ execute the office of a King A. Christ executeth the office of a King in subduing us to himself (z) Act. 15. 14. Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles to take out of them a people for his name v. 15. And to this agree the words of the Prophet as it is written v. 16. After this I will return and build again the tabernacle of David which is fallen down and I will build again the ruines thereof and I will set it up in ruling (a) Isa 33. 22. The Lord is our Judg the Lord is our Law-giver the Lord is our King he will save us and desending us (b) Isa 32. 1. Behold a King shall reign in righteousness and Princes shall rule in judgement v. 2. And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind and a covert from the tempest as rivers of waters in a dry place as the shadow of a rock in a weary land and restraining and conquering all his and our enemies (c) 1 Cor. 15. 25. For he mâ—st reign till he hath put all enemies under his feet Ps 110. throughout Q. Wherein did Christs humiliation consist A. Christs humiliation consisted in his being born and that in a low condition (d) Luk. 2. 7. And she brought forth her first-born Son and wrapped him in swadling-clothes and laid him in a manger because there was no room for them in the Inne made under the law (e) Gal. 4. 4. But when the fulness of time was come God sent forth his Son made of a woman made under the law undergoing the miseries of this life (f) Heb. 12. 2. Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross despising the shame and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God v. 3. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself lest ye be wearied and faint in your mindes Isa 53. 2. For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant and as a root out of a dry ground he hath no form nor comliness and when we shall see him there is no beauty that we should desire him v. 3. and rejected of men a man of sorrows and acquainted with griefs and we hid as it were our faces from him he was despised and we esteemed him not the wrath of God (g) Luk. 22. 44. He hath appointed a day in the which he shall judge the world in righteousnesse by that man whom he hath ordained whereof he hath given assurance unto all men in that he hath raised him from the dead Q. How are we made partakers of the Redemption purchased by Christ A. We are made partakers of the Redemption purchased by Christ by the effectual application of it to us (p) John 1. 11 12. v. 11. He came unto his own and his own received him not v. 12. But as many as received him to them gave he power to become the Sons of God even to them that believe on his Name by his holy Spirit (q) Tit. 3. 5 6. v. 5. Not by works of righteousnesse which we have done but according to his mercy â—e saved us by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the holy Ghost v. 6. Which be shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Sâ—viour Q. How doth the Spirit apply to us the Redemption purchased by Christ A. The Spirit applieth to us the Redemption purchased by Christ by working faith in us (r) Eph. 1. 13 14. v. 13. In whom ye also trusted after that ye heard the Word of truth the Gospel of your salvation in whom also after that ye believed ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise v. 14. Which is an earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession unto the praise of his glory Joh. 6. 37 39. v. 37. All the Father giveth me shall come unto me and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out v. 39. And this is the Fathers will which hath sent me that of all which he hath given I should lose nothing but should raise it again at the last day Eph. 2. 8. By grace ye are saved through faith and that not of your selves it is the gift of God and thereby uniting us to Christ in our effectual Calling (Å¿) Eph. 3. 17. That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith that ye being rooted and grounded in love 1 Cor. 1. 9. God is faithful by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Q. What is effectual Calling A. Effectuall calling is the work of Gods Spirit (t) 2 Tim. 1 9. Who hath saved us and called us with an holy calling not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began 2 Thes 2. 13 14. v. 13. But we are bound to give thanks alwayes to God for you brethren beloved of the Lord because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through Sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth v. 14. Whereunto he called you by our Gospâ—l to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ whereby convincing us of our sin and misery (u) Act. 2. 37. Now when they heard this they were pricked in their hearts and said unto Peter and to the rest of the Apostles men and brethren what shall we do inlightning our minds in the knowledg of Christ (*) Act 26. 18. To open their eyes and to turn them from darknesse to light and from the power of Satan unto God that they may receive forgiveness of sins and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me and renewing our wills (x) Ezek. 36. 26 27. v. 26. A new heart also will I give you and a new Spirit will I put within you and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh and I will give you an heart of flesh v. 27.
