How shall we order the childe and ‖ Or what shall be do † Heb. what shall be his work how shall we do unto him 13 And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah Of all that I said unto the woman let her beware 14 She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the vine neither let her drink wine or strong drink nor eat any unclean thing all that I commanded her let her observe 15 ¶ And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD I pray thee let us detain thee until we shall have made ready a kid † Heb. before thee for thee 16 And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah Though thou detain me I will not eat of thy bread and it thou wilt offer a burnt-offering thou must offer it unto the LORD for Manoah knew not that he was an angel of the LORD 17 And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD What is thy name that when thy sayings come to pass we may do thee honour 18 And the angel of the LORD said unto him Why askest thou thus after my name seeing it is ‖ Or wonderful secret 19 So Manoah took a kid with a meat-offering and offered it upon a rock unto the LORD and the angel did wondrously and Manoah and his wife looked on 20 For it came to pass when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar and Manoah and his wife looked on it and fell on their faces to the ground 21 But the angel of the LORD did no more appear to Manoah and to his wife Then Manoah knew that he was an angel of the LORD 22 And Manoah said unto his wife * Exod. 33.20 Ch. 6.22 We shall surely die because we have seen God 23 But his wife said unto him If the LORD were pleased to kill us he would not have received a burnt-offering and a meat-offering at our hands neither would he have shewed us all these things nor would as at this time have told us such things as these 24 ¶ And the woman bare a son and called his name Samson and the childe grew and the LORD blessed him 25 And the spirit of the LORD began to move him at times in the camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol CHAP. XIV 1 Samson desireth a wife of the Philistines 5 In his journey he killeth a lion 8 In a second journey be findeth honey in the carcase 10 Samsons marriate-feast 12 His riddle by his wife is made known 19 He spoileth thirty Philistines 20 His wife is married to another ANd Samson went down to Timnath and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines 2 And he came up and told his father and his mother and said I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines now therefore get her for me to wife 3 Then his father and his mother said unto him Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren or among all my people that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines And Samson said unto his father Get her for me for † Heb. she is right in mine eyes she pleaseth me well 4 But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the LORD that he sought an occasion against the Philistines for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel 5 Then went Samson down and his father and his mother to Timnath and came to the vineyards of Timnath and behold a young lion roared † Heb. in meeting him against him 6 And the spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him and he rent him as he would have rent a kid and he had nothing in his hand but he told not his father or his mother what he had done 7 And he went down and talked with the woman and she pleased Samson well 8 ¶ And after a time he returned to take her and he turned aside to see the carcase of the lion and behold there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcase of the lion 9 And he took thereof in his hands and went on eating and came to his father and mother and he gave them and they did eat but he told not them that he had taken the honey out of the carcase of the lion 10 ¶ So his father went down unto the woman and Samson made there a feast for so used the young men to do 11 And it came to pass when they saw him that they brought thirty companions to be with him 12 ¶ And Samson said unto them I will now put forth a riddle unto you if you can certainly declare it me within the seven days of the feast and finde it out then I will give
manner and another said on that manner 21 And there came forth a spirit and stood before the LORD and said I will perswade him 22 And the LORD said unto him Wherewith And he said I will go forth I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets And he said Thou shalt perswade him and prevail also go forth and do so 23 Now therefore behold the LORD hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets and the LORD hath spoken evil concerning thee 24 But Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah went near and smote Micaiah on the cheek and said * 2 Chr. 18.23 Which way went the spirit of the LORD from me to speak unto thee 25 And Micaiah said Behold thou shalt see in that day when thou shalt go ‖ Or from chamber to chamber into † Heb. a chamber in a chamber an inner chamber to hide thy self 26 And the king of Israel said Take Micaiah and carry him back unto Amon the governour of the city and to Joash the kings son 27 And say Thus saith the king Put this fellow in the prison and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction until I come in peace 28 And Micaiah said If thou return at all in peace the LORD hath not spoken by me And he said Hearken O people every one of you 29 So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to Ramoth-gilead 30 And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat ‖ Or when he was to disguise himself and enter into the battel I will disguise my self and enter into the battel but put thou on thy robes And the king of Israel disguised himself and went into the battel 31 But the king of Syria commanded his thirty and two captains that had rule over his chariots saying Fight neither with small nor great save onely with the king of Israel 32 And it came to pass when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat that they said Surely it is the king of Israel And they turned aside to fight against him and Jehoshaphat cried out 33 And it came to pass when the captains of the chariots perceived that it was not the king of Israel that they turned back from pursuing him 34 And a certain man drew a bowe † Heb. in his simplicity at a venture and smote the king of Israel between the † Heb. joynts and the breast-plate joynts of the harness wherefore he said unto the driver of his chariot Turn thine hand and carry me out of the host for I am † Heb. made sick wounded 35 And the battel † Heb. ascended increased that day and the king was stayed up in his chariot against the Syrians and died at even and the bloud ran out of the wound into the † Heb. bosom midst of the chariot 36 And there went a proclamation throughout the host about the going down of the sun saying Every man to his city and every man to his own countrey 37 ¶ So the king died and † Heb. came was brought to Samaria and they buried the king in Samaria 38 And one washed the chariot in the pool of Samaria and the dogs licked up his bloud and they washed his armour according * Chap. 21.19 unto the word of the LORD which he spake 39 Now the rest of the acts of Ahab and all that he did and the ivory house which he made and all the cities that he built are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 40 So Ahab slept with his fathers and Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead 41 ¶ And * 2 Chr. 20.31 Jehoshaphat the son of Asa began to reign over Judah in the fourth year of Ahab king of Israel 42 Jehoshaphat was thirty and five years old when he began to reign and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi 43 And he walked in all the way of Asa his father he turned not aside from it doing that which was right in the eyes of the LORD nevertheless the high places were not taken away for the people offered and burnt incense yet in the high places 44 And Jehoshaphat made peace with the king of Israel 45 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat and his might that he shewed and how he warred are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 46 And the remnant of the sodomites which remained in the days of his father Asa he took out of the land 47 There was then no king in Edom a deputy was king 48 Jehoshaphat ‖ Or had ten ships made ships of Tharshish to go to Ophir for gold but they went not for the ships were broken at Ezion-geber 49 Then said Ahaziah the son of Ahab unto Jehoshaphat Let my servants go with thy servants in the ships but Jehoshaphat would not 50 ¶ And Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father and Jehoram his son reigned in his stead 51 ¶ Ahaziah the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah and reigned two years over Israel 52 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD and walked in the way of his father and in the way of his mother and in the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat who made Israel to sin 53 For he served Baal and worshipped him and provoked to anger the LORD God of Israel according to all that his father had done ¶ The second book of the KINGS commonly called The fourth book of the KINGS CHAP. I. 1 Moab rebelleth 2 Ahaziah sending to Baal-zebub hath his judgement by Elijah 5 Elijah twice bringeth fire from heaven upon them whom Abaziah sent to apprehend him 13 He pitieth the third captain and encouraged by an angel telleth the king of his death 17 Jehoram succeedeth Ahaziah THen Moab rebelled against Israel * Chap. 3.5 after the death of Ahab 2 And Ahaziah fell down through a lattess in his upper chamber that was in Samaria and was sick and he sent messengers and said unto them Go enquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron whether I shall recover of this disease 3 But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite Arise go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and say unto them Is it not because there is not a God in Israel that ye go to enquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron 4 Now therefore thus saith the LORD † Heb. The bed whither thou art goen up thou shalt not come down from it Thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up but shalt surely die And Elijah departed 5 ¶ And when the messengers turned back unto him he said unto them
father 8 Then he said unto him Go and tarry not So he went in and said to his father Behold I have found one which will go with me Then he said Call him unto me that I may know of what tribe he is and whether he be a trusty man to go with thee 9 So he called him and he came in and they saluted one another 10 Then Tobit said unto him Brother shew me of what tribe and family thou art 11 To whom he said Dost thou seek for a tribe or family or an hired man to go with thy son Then Tobit said unto him I would know brother thy kindred and name 12 Then he said I am Azarias the son of Ananias the great and of thy brethren 13 Then Tobit said Thou art welcome brother be not now angry with me because I have enquired to know thy tribe and thy family for thou art my brother of an honest and good stock for I know Ananias and Jonathas sons of that great Samaias as we went together to Jerusalem to worship and offered the first-born and the tenths of the fruits and they were not seduced with the errour of our brethren my brother thou art of a good stock 14 But tell me what wages shall I give thee wilt thou a drachme a day and things necessary as to mine own son 15 Yea moreover if ye return safe I will add something to thy wages 16 So they were well pleased Then said he to Tobias Prepare thy self for the journey and God send you a good journey And when his son had prepared all things for the journey his father said Go thou with this man and God which dwelleth in heaven prosper your journey and the angel of God keep you company So they went forth both and the young mans dog with them 17 But Anna his mother wept and said to Tobit Why hast thou sent away our son is he not the staff of our hand in going in and out before us 18 ‖ Let not money be added but be the offscouring● of our son Be not greedy to add money to money but let it be as refuse in respect of our childe 19 ‖ Or So long as God bath granted us to live this is sufficient For that which the Lord hath given us to live with doth suffice us 20 Then said Tobit to her Take no care my sister he shall return in safety and thine eyes shall see him 21 For the good angel will keep him company and his journey shall be prosperous and he shall return safe 22 Then the made an end of weeping CHAP. VI. 4 The angel biddeth Tobias to take the liver heart and gall out of a fish 10 and to marry Sara the daughter of Raguel 16 and teacheth how to drive the wicked spirit away ANd as they went on their journey they came in the evening to the river Tigris and they lodged there 2 And when the young man went down to wash himself a fish leaped out of the river and would have devoured him 3 Then the angel said unto him Take the fish and the young man laid hold of the fish and ‖ Or cast it upon the ●and drew it to land 4 To whom the angel said Open the fish and take the heart and the liver and the gall and put them up safely 5 So the young man did as the angel commanded him and when they had rosted the fish they did eat it then they both went on their way till they drew near to Ecbatane 6 Then the young man said to the angel Brother Azarias to what use is the heart and the liver and the gall of the fish 7 And he said unto him Touching the heart and the liver if a devil or an evil spirit trouble any we must make a smoke thereof before the man or the woman and the party shall be no more vexed 8 As for the gall it is good to anoint a man that hath whiteness in his eyes and he shall be healed 9 And when they were come near to Rages 10 The angel said to the young man Brother to day we shall lodge with Raguel who is thy cousin he also hath one onely daughter named Sara I will speak for her that she may be given thee for a wife 11 For to thee doth the ‖ Or inheritance * Num. 27.8 36.8 right of her appertain seeing thou onely art of her kindred 12 And the maid is fair and wise now therefore hear me and I will speak to her father and when we return from Rages we will celebrate the marriage for I know that Raguel cannot marry her to another according to the law of Moses but he shall be guilty of death because the right of inheritance doth rather appertain to thee then to any other 13 Then the young man answered the angel I have heard brother Azarias that this maid hath been given to seven men who all died in the marriage-chamber 14 And now I am the onely son of my father and I am afraid lest if I go in unto her I die as the other before for a wicked spirit loveth her which hurteth no body but those which come unto her wherefore I also fear lest I die and bring my fathers and my mothers life because of me to the grave with sorrow for they have no other son to bury them 15 Then the angel said unto him Dost thou not remember the precepts which thy father gave thee that thou shouldest marry a wife of thine own kindred wherefore hear me O my brother for she shall be given thee to wife and make thou no reckoning of the evil spirit for this same night shall she be given thee in marriage 16 And when thou shalt come into the marriage-chamber thou shalt take the ‖ Or embers ashes of perfume and shalt lay upon them some of the heart and liver of the fish and shalt make a smoke with it 17 And the devil shall smell it and flee away and never come again any more but when thou shalt come to her rise up both of you and pray to God which is merciful who will have pity on you and save you fear not for she is appointed unto thee from the beginning and thou shalt preserve her and she shall go with thee moreover I suppose that she shall bear thee children Now when Tobias had heard these things he loved her and his heart was ‖ Or vehemently effectually joyned to her CHAP. VII 11 Raguel telleth Tobias what had happened to his daughter 12 and giveth her in marriage unto him 17 She is conveyed to her chamber and weepeth 18 Her mother comforteth her ANd when they were come to Ecbatane they came to the house of Raguel and Sara met them and after they had saluted one another she brought them into the house 2 Then said Raguel to Edna his wife How like is this young man to Tobit my cousin 3 And Raguel asked them From whence

Joseph also went up from Galilee out of the city of Nazareth into Judea unto * Joh. 7.42 the city of David which is called Bethlehem because he was of the house and linage of David 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife being great with childe 6 And so it was that while they were there the days were accomplished that she should be delivered 7 And she brought forth her first-born son and wrapped him in swadling clothes and laid him in a manger because there was no room for them in the inn 8 And there were in the same countrey shepherds abiding in the field keeping ‖ Or the night-watches watch over their flock by night 9 And lo the angel of the Lord came upon them and the glory of the Lord shone round about them and they were sore afraid 10 And the angel said unto them Fear not for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a signe unto you Ye shall finde the babe wrapped in swadling clothes lying in a manger 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying 14 Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace good will towards men 15 And it came to pass as the angels were gone away from them into heaven the shepherds said one to another Let us now go even unto Bethlehem and see this thing which is come to pass which the Lord hath made known unto us 16 And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the babe lying in a manger 17 And when they had seen it they made known abroad took he him up in his arms and blessed God and said 29 Lord now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace according to thy word 30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation 31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people 32 A light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of thy people Israel 33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him 34 And Simeon blessed them and said unto Mary his mother Behold this childe is set for the * Isa 8 1● Rom. 9.31 fall and rising again of many in Israel and for a signe which shall be spoken against 35 Yea a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed 36 And there was one Anna a prophetess the daughter of Phanuel of the tribe of Aser she was of a great age and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity 37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years which departed not from the temple but served God with fastings and prayers night and day 38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in ‖ Or Isra●● Jerusalem 39 And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord they returned into Galilee to their own city Nazareth 40 And the childe grew and waxed strong in spirit filled with wisdom and the grace of God was upon him 41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem * De● 16.1 every year at the feast of the pass-over 42 And when he was twelve year old they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast 43 And when they had fulfilled sought him among their kinsfolk and among their acquaintance 45 And when they found him not they turned back again to Jerusalem seeking him 46 And it came to pass that after three days they found him in the temple sitting in the midst of the doctours both hearing them and asking them questions 47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers 48 And when they saw him they were amazed and his mother said vnto him Son why hast thou thus dealt with us behold thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing 49 And he said unto them How is it that ye sought me wist ye not that I must be about my Fathers business 50 And they

IX 1 The man that was born blinde restored to sight 8 He is brought to the Pharisees 13 They are offended at it and excommunicate him 35 but he is received of Jesus and confesseth him 39 Who they are whom Christ enlightneth ANd as Jesus passed by he saw a man which was blinde from his birth 2 And his disciples asked him saying Master who did sin this man or his parents that he was born blinde 3 Jesus answered Neither hath this man sinned nor his parents but that the works of God should be made manifest in him 4 I must work the works of him that sent me while it is day the night cometh when no man can work 5 As long as I am in the world * Chap. 1.9 I am the light of the world 6 When he had thus spoken he spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle and he ‖ Or spread the clay upon the eyes of the blinde man anointed the eyes of the blinde man with the clay 7 And said unto him Go wash in the pool of Siloam which is by interpretation Sent. the flesh to live after the flesh 13 For if ye live after the flesh ye shall die but if ye through the Spirit do mortifie the deeds of the body ye shall live 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God they are the sons of God 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear but ye have received the * Gal. 4.6 Spirit of adoption whereby we cry Abba Father 16 The Spirit it self beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God 17 And if children then heirs heirs of God and joynt heirs with Christ if so be that we suffer with him that we may be also glorified together 18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us 19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God 20 For the creature was made subject to vanity not willingly but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope 21 Because the creature it self also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God 22 For we know that ‖ Or every creature the whole creation groaneth and travelleth in pain together until now 23 And not only they but our selves also which have the first-fruits of the Spirit even we our selves groan within our selves waiting for the adoption to wit the * Luke 21.28 redemption of our body 24 For we are saved by hope But hope that is seen is not hope for what a man seeth why doth he yet hope for 25 But if we hope for that we see not then do we with patience wait for it 26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities for we know not what we should pray for as we ought but the Spirit it self maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the minde of the Spirit ‖ Or that because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God 28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God to them who are the called according to his purpose 29 For whom he did foreknow he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son that he might be the first-born among many brethren 30 Moreover whom he did predestinate them he also called and whom he called them he also justified and whom he justified them he also glorified 31 What shall we then say to these things If God be for us who can be against us 32 He that spared not his own Son but delivered him up for us all how shall he not with him also freely give us all things 33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of Gods elect It is God that justifieth 34 Who is he that condemneth It is Christ that died yea rather that is risen again who is even at the right hand of God who also maketh intercession for us 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ shall tribulation or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or peril or sword 36 As it is written * Psal 44.22 For thy sake we are killed all the day long we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter 37 Nay in all these things we are more then conquerers through him that loved us 38 For I am perswaded that neither death nor life nor angels nor principalities nor powers nor things present nor things to come 39 Nor height nor depth nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. CHAP. IV. 1 In what account the ministers ought to be had 7 We have nothing which we have not received 9 The apostles spectacles to the world angels and men 13 the filth and off-scouring of the world 15 yet our fathers in Christ 16 whom we ought to follow LEt a man so account of us as of the ministers of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God 2 Moreover it is required in stewards that a man be found faithful 3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged of you or of mans † Gr. day judgement yea I judge not my own self 4 For I know nothing by my self yet am I not hereby justified but he that judgeth me is the Lord. 5 * Matth. 7.1 Rom. 2.1 Therefore judge nothing before the time until the Lord come who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts and then shall every man have praise of God 6 And these things brethren I have in a figure transferred to my self and to Apollos for your sakes that ye might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written that no one of you be puffed up for one against another 7 For who † Gr. distinguisheth thee maketh thee to differ from another and what hast thou that thou didst not receive now if thou didst receive it why dost thou glory as if thou hadst not received it 8 Now ye are full now ye are rich ye have reigned as kings without us and I would to God ye did reign that we also might reign with you 9 For I think that God hath let forth us the apostles last as it were appointed to death For we are made a † Gr. theatre spectacle unto the world and to angels and to men 10 We are fools for Christs sake but ye are wise in Christ we are weak but ye are strong ye are honourable but we are despised 11 Even unto this present hour we both hunger and thirst and are naked and are buffeted and have no certain dwelling place 12 * Acts 12.34 1 Thes 2.9 2 Thes 3.8 And labour working with our own hands being reviled we bless being persecuted we suffer it 13 * Mat. 5.44 Being defamed we intreat we are made as the filth of the world and are the off-scouring of all things unto this day 14 I write not these things to shame you but as my beloved sons I warn you 15 For though you have ten thousand instructours in Christ yet have ye not many fathers for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel 16 Wherefore I beseech you be ye followers of me 17 For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus who is my beloved son and faithful in the Lord who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ as I teach every where in every church 18 Now some are puffed up as though I would not come to you 19 * Acts 19.21 But I will come to you shortly * Jam. 4.15 if the Lord will and will know not the speech of them which are puffed up but the

XII 1 For commending of his apostleship though he might glory of his wonderful revelations 9 yet he rather chooseth to glory of his infirmities 11 blaming them for forcing him to this vain boasting 14 He promiseth to come to them again but yet altogether in the affection of a father 20 although he feareth he shall to his grief finde many offenders and publick disorders there IT is not expedient for me doubtless to glory I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord. 2 I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago whether in the body I cannot tell or whether out of the body I cannot tell God knoweth such an one caught up to the third heaven 3 And I knew such a man whether in the body or out of the body I cannot tell God knoweth 4 How that he was caught up into paradise and heard unspeakable words which it is not ‖ Or. pos●●t●●e lawful for a man to utter 5 Of such an one will I glory yet of my self I will not glory but in mine infirmities 6 For though I would desire to glory I shall not be a fool for I will say the truth but now I forbear lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be or that he heareth of me 7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations there was given to me a * See Ezek. 28.24 thorn in the flesh the messenger of Satan to buffet me lest I should be exalted above measure 8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice that it might depart from me 9 And he said unto me My grace is sufficient for thee for my strength is made perfect in weakness Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities that the power of Christ may rest upon me 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities in reproaches in necessities in persecutions in distresses for Christs sake for when I am weak then am I strong 11 I am become a fool in glorying ye have compelled me for I ought to have been commended of you for in nothing am I behinde the very chiefest apostles though I be nothing 12 Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience in signs and wonders and mighty deeds 13 For with is it wherein ye were inferiour to other Churches except it be that * Chap. 11.9 I my self was not burdensom to your forgive me this wrong 14 Behold the third time I am ready to come to you and I will not be burdensom to you for I seek not yours but you for the children ought not to lay up for the parents but the parents for the children 15 And I will very gladly spend and be spent for † Gr. your souls you though the more abundantly I love you the less I be loved 16 But be it so I did not burden you nevertheless being crafty I caught you with guile 17 Did I make a gain of you by any of them whom I sent unto you 18 I desired Titus with him I sent a brother did Titus make a gain of you walked we not in the same Spirit walked we not in the same steps 19 Again think you that we excuse our selves unto you we speak before God in Christ but we do all things dearly beloved for your edifying 20 For I fear lest when I come I shall not finde you such as I would and that I shall be found unto you such as ye would not lest there be debates envyings wraths strifes backbitings whisperings swellings tumults 21 And lest when I come again my God will humble me among you and that I shall bewail many which have sinned already and have not repented of the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness which they have committed CHAP. XIII 1 He threatneth severity and the power of his apostleship against obstinate sinners 5 and advising them to a trial of their faith 7 and to reformation of their sins before his coming 11 be concludeth his epistle with a general exhortation and a prayer THis is the third time I am coming to you * Deut. 19.15 In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established 2 I told you before and foretel you as if I were present the second time and being absent now I write to them which heretofore have finned and to all other that if I come again I will not spare 3 Since ye seek a proof of Christ speaking in me which to you-ward is not weak but is mighty in you 4 For though he was crucified through weakness yet he liveth by the power of God For we also are weak ‖ Or with him in him but we shall live with him by the power of God toward you 5 Examine your selves whether ye be in the faith prove your own selves know ye not your own selves how that Jesus Christ is in you except ye be reprobates 6 But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates 7 Now I pray to God that ye do no evil not that we should appear approved but that ye should do that which is

III. 1 Christ is more worthy then Moses 7 therefore if we beleeve not in him we shall be more worthy punishment then hard-hearted Israel WHerefore holy brethren partakers of the heavenly calling consider the Apostle and high Priest of our profession Christ Jesus 2 Who was faithful to him that † Gr. made 1 Sam. 12.6 appointed him as also * Num. 12.7 Moses was faithful in all his house 3 For this man was counted worthy of more glory then Moses in as much as he who hath builded the house hath more honour then the house 4 For every house is builded by some man but he that built all things is God 5 And Moses verily was faithful in all his house as a servant for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after 6 But Christ as a Son over his own house whose house are we if we hold fast the confidence the rejoycing of the hope firm unto the end 7 Wherefore as the holy Ghost saith * Psal 95.7 Chap. 4.7 To day if ye will hear his voice 8 Harden not your hearts as in the provocation in the day of temptation in the wilderness 9 When your fathers tempted me proved me and saw my works fourty years 10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation and said They do alway err in their heart and they have not known my ways 11 So I sware in my wrath † Gr. If they shall enter They shall not enter into my rest 12 Take heed brethren lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God 13 But exhort one another daily while it is called To day lest any of you be hardned through the deceitfulness of sin 14 For we are made partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence sted fast unto the end 15 While it is said To day if ye will hear his voice harden not your hearts as in the provocation 16 For some when they had heard did provoke howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses 17 But with whom was he grieved fourty years was it not with them that had sinned * Num. 14.29 c. whose carcases fell in the wilderness 18 And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest but to them that beleeved not 19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief CHAP. IV. 1 The rest of Christians is attained by faith 12 The power of Gods word 14 By our high priest Jesus the Son of God subject to infirmities but not sin 16 we must and may go boldly to the throne of grace LEt us therefore fear lest a promise being left us of entring into his rest any of you should seem to come short of it 2 For unto us was the gospel preached as well as unto them but † Gr. the word of hearing the word preached did not profit them ‖ Or because they were not united by faith to not being mixed with faith in them that heard it 3 For we which have beleeved do enter into rest as he said * Psal 95.11 As I have sworn in my wrath If they shall enter into my rest although the works were finished from the foundation of the world 4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise * Gen. 2 2. What is commanded to be written to the angels that is the ministers of the churches of 1 Ephesus 8 Smyrna 12 Pergamos 18 Thyatira and what is commended or found wanting in them UNto the angel of the church of Ephesus write These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks 2 I know thy works and thy labour and thy patience and how thou canst not bear them which are evil and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles and are not and hast found them liars 3 And hast born and hast patience and for my names sake hast laboured and hast not fainted 4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee because thou hast left thy first love 5 Remember therefore from whence thou art faln and repent and do the first works or else I will come unto thee quickly and will remove thy candlestick out of his place except thou repent 6 But this thou hast that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans which I also hate 7 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life which is in the midst of the paradise of God 8 And unto the Angel of the church in Smyrna write These things saith the first and the last which was dead and is alive 9 I know thy works and tribulation and poverty but thou art rich and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews and are not but are the synagogue of Satan 10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer behold the devil shall cast some of you into prison that ye may be tried and ye shall have tribulation ten days be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life 11 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death 12 And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges 13 I know thy works and where thou dwellest even where Satans seat is and thou holdest fast my name and hast not denied my faith even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr who was slain among you where Satan dwelleth 14 But I have a few things against thee because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of * Num. 25. Balaam who taught Balac to cast a stumbling-block before the children of Israel to eat things sacrificed unto idols and to commit fornication 15 So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans which thing I hate 16 Repent or else I will come unto thee quickly and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth 17 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna and will give him a white stone and in the stone a new name written which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it 18 And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write These things saith the Son of God who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire and his feet are like fine brass 19 I know thy works and charity and service and faith and thy patience and thy works and the last to be more then the first 20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee because thou sufferest that woman * ● Kin. 16. ●1 Jezabel which calleth her self a prophetess to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication and to eat things sacrificed unto idols 21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication and she repented not 22 Behold I will cast her into a bed and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation except they repent of their deeds 23 And I will kill her children with death and all the churches shall know that * Ps 7.9 Jer. 11.20 17.10 I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts and I will give unto every one of you according to your works 24 But unto you I say and unto the rest in Thyatira As many as have not this doctrine and which have not known the depths of Satan as they speak I will put upon you none other burden 25 But that which ye have already hold fast till I come 26 And he that overcometh and keepeth my works unto the end to him will I give power over the nations 27 * Psal 2.6 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers even as I received of my Father 28 And I will give him the morning star 29 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches CHAP. And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth * Ezek. 3● 2 39.1 Gog and Magog to gather them together to battel the number of whom is as the sand of the sea 9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth and compassed the camp of the saints about and the beloved city and fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them 10 And the devil that deceived th●m was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever 11 And I saw a great white throne and him that sat on it from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away and there was found no place for them 12 And I saw the dead small and great stand before God * Dan. 7.10 and the books were opened and another * Chap. 3.5 book was opened which is the book of life and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books according to their works 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it and death and ‖ Or the grave hell delivered up the dead which were in them and they were judged every man according to their works 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire This is the second death 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire CHAP.
