XVI 1 Babylon and other places are threatned with plagues that cannot be avoided 23 and with desolation 40 The servants of the Lord must look for troubles 51 and not hide their sins 74 but leave them and they shall be delivered WO be unto thee Babylon and Asia wo be unto thee Egypt and Syria 2 Gird up your selves with clothes of sack and hair bewail your children and be sorry for your destruction is at hand 3 A sword is sent upon you and who may turn it back 4 A fire is sent among you and who may quench it 5 Plagues are sent unto you and what is he that may drive them away 6 May any man drive away an hungry lion in the wood or may any one quench the fire in stubble when it hath begun to burn 7 May one turn again the arrow that is shot of a strong archer 8 The mighty Lord sendeth the plagues and who is he that can drive them away 9 A fire shall go forth from his wrath and who is he that may quench it 10 He shall cast lightnings and who shall not fear he shall thunder and who shall not be afraid 11 The Lord shall threaten and who shall not be utterly beaten to powder at his presence 12 The earth quaketh and the foundations thereof the sea ariseth up with waves from the deep and the waves of it are troubled and the fishes thereof also before the Lord and before the glory of his power 13 For strong is his right hand that bendeth the bowe his arrows that he shooteth are sharp and shall not miss when they begin to be shot into the ends of the world 14 Behold the plagues are sent and shall not return again until they come upon the earth 15 The fire is kindled and shall not be put out till it consume the foundation of the earth 16 Like as an arrow which is shot of a mighty archer returneth not backward even so the plagues that shall be sent upon earth shall not return again 17 Wo is me wo is me who will deliver me in those days 18 The beginning of sorrows and great mournings the beginning of famine and great death the beginning of wars and the powers shall stand in fear the beginning of evils what shall I do when these evils shall come 19 Behold famine and plague tribulation and anguish are sent as scourges for amendment 20 But for all these things they shall not turn from their wickedness nor be alway mindful of thy scourges 21 Behold victuals shall be so good cheap upon earth that they shall think themselves to be in good case and even then shall ‖ Of plagues evils grow upon earth sword famine and great confusion 22 For many of them that dwell upon earth shall perish of famine and the other that escape the hunger shall the sword destroy 23 And the dead shall be cast out as dung and there shall be no man to comfort them for the earth shall be wasted and the cities shall be cast down 24 There shall be no man lest to till the earth and to sow it 25 The trees shall give fruit and who shall gather them 26 The grapes shall ripen and who shall tread them for all places shall be desolate of men 27 So that one man shall desire to see another and to hear his voice 28 For of a city there shall be ten left and two of the field which shall hide themselves in the thick groves and in the clefts of the rocks 29 As in an orchard of olives upon every tree there are left three or four olives 30 Or as when a vineyard is gathered there are left some clusters of them that diligently seek through the vineyard 31 Even so in those daâ—s there shall be three or four left by them that search their houses with the sword 32 And the earth shall be laid waste and the fields thereof shall wax old and her ways and all her paths shall grow full of thorns because no man shall travel there through 33 The virgins shall mourn having no bridegrooms the women shall mourn having no husbands their daughters shall mourn having no helpers 34 In the wars shall their bridegrooms be destroyed and their husbands shall perish of famine 35 Hear now these things and understand them ye servants of the Lord. 36 Behold the word of the Lord receive it beleeve not the gods of whom the Lord spake 37 Behold the plagues draw nigh and are not slack 38 As when a woman with childe in the ninth moneth bringeth forth her son within two or three hours of her birth great pains compass her womb which pains when the childe cometh forth they slack not a moment 39 Even so shall not the plagues be slack to come upon the earth and the world shall mourn and sorrows shall come upon it on every side 40 O my people hear my word make you ready to the battel and in those evils be even as pilgrims upon the earth 41 He that selleth let him be as he that fleeth away and he that buyeth as one that will lose 42 He that occupieth merchandise as he that had no profit by it
for as yet the people had not prepared their hearts unto the God of their fathers 34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat first and last behold they are written in the †Heb. words book of Jehu the son of Hanani * 1 Kin. 16.1 who †Heb. was made to ascend is mentioned in the book of the kings of Israel 35 ¶ And after this did Jehoshaphat king of Judah joyn himself with Ahaziah king of Israel who did very wickedly 36 And he joyned himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish and they made the ships in Ezion-gaber 37 Then Eliezer the son of Dodavah of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat saying Because thou hast joyned thy self with Ahaziah the LORD hath broken thy works And the ships were broken that they were not able to go to Tarshish CHAP. XXI 1 Jehoram succeeding Jehoshaphat slayeth his brethren 5 His wicked raign 8 Edom and Libnah revolt 12 The prophesie of Elijah against him in writing 16 Philistines and Arabians oppress him 18 His incurable disease infamous death and burial NOw * 1 Kin. 22.50 Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David and Jehoram his son reigned in his stead 2 And he had brethren the sons of Jehoshaphat Azariah and Jehiel and Zechariah and Azariah and Michael and Shephatiah all these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel 3 And their father gave them great gifts of silver and of gold and of precious things with fenced cities in Judah but the kingdom gave he to Jehoram because he was the first-born 4 Now * 2 Kin. 8.16 17. when Jehoram was risen up to the kingdom of his father he strengthned himself and slew all his brethren with the sword and divers also of the princes of Israel 5 ¶ Jehoram was thirty and two years old when he began to reign and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem 6 And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel like as did the house of Ahab for he had the daughter of * Chap. 22.2 Ahab to wife and he wrought that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD 7 Howbeit the LORD would not destroy the house of David because of the covenant that he had made with David and as he promised to give a †Heb. lamp or candle light to him and to his * 2 Sam. 7.12 1 Kin. 11.36 2 Kin. 8.19 Psal 132.11 c. sons for ever 8 ¶ In his days the Edomites revolted from under the †Heb. hand dominion of Judah and made themselves a king 9 Then Jehoram * 2 Kin. 8.21 went forth with his princes and all his chariots with him and he rose up by night and smote the Edomites which compassed him in and the captains of the chariots 10 So the Edomites revolted from under the hand of Judah unto this day The same time also did Libnah revolt from under his hand because he had forsaken the LORD God of his fathers 11 Moreover he made high places in the mountains of Judah and caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem to commit fornication and compelled Judah thereto 12 ¶ And there came a writing to him from Elijah the prophet saying Thus saith the LORD God of David thy father Because thou hast not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat thy father nor in the ways of Asa king of Judah 13 But hast walked in the way of the kings of Israel and hast made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to go a whoring like to the whoredoms of the house of Ahab and also hast slain thy brethren of thy fathers house which were better then thy self 14 Behold with †Heb. a great stroke a great plague will the LORD smite thy people and thy children and thy wives and all thy goods 15 And thou shalt have great sickness by disease of thy bowels until thy bowels fall out by reason of the sickness day by day 16 ¶ Moreover the LORD stirred up against Jenoram the spirit of the Philistines and of the Arabians that were near the Ethiopians 17 And they came up into Judah and brake into it and †Heb. carried captive carried away all the substance that was found in the kings house and his sons also and his wives so that there was never a son left him save ‖ Or Abaziab Ch. 22.1 or Azariab Ch. 22.6 Jehoahaz the youngest of his sons 18 ¶ And after all this the LORD smote him in his bowels with an incurable disease 19 And it came to pass that in process of time after the end of two years his bowels fell out by reason of his â—â—â—kness so he died of sore diseases And has people made no burning for him like the burning of his fathers 20 Thirty and two years old was he when he began to reign and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years and departed †Heb. 〈◊〉 â—â—sice without being desired howbeit they buried him in the city of David but not in the sepulchres of the kings CHAP. XXII 1 Ahaziah succeeding reigneth wickedly 5 In his confederacy with Joram the son of Ahab he is slain by Jehu 10 Athaliah destroying all the seed royal save Joash whom Jehoshabeath his aunt hid usurpeth the kingdom ANd the inhabitants of Jerusalem made * 2 Kin. 8.24 c. Ahaziah his youngest son king in his stead for the band of men that came with the Arabians to the camp had slain all the * Ch. 21.17 eldest So Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah reigned 2 Fourty and two years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign and he reigned one year in Jerusalem his mothers name also was * Ch. 23.6 Athaliah the daughter of Omri 3 He also walked in the ways of the house of Ahab for his mother was his counsellour to do wickedly 4 Wherefore he did evil in the sight of the LORD like the house of Ahab for they were his counsellours after the death of his father to his destruction 5 ¶ He walked also after their counsel and went with Jehoram the son of Ahab king of Israel to war against Hazael king of Syria at Ramoth-gilead and the Syrians smote Joram 6 And he returned to be healed in Jezreel because of the wounds †Heb. â—â—erewith they â—ounded him which were given him at Ramah when he sought with Hazael king of Syria And ‖ Otherwise called Ahaziah ver 1. and Jehoahaz ch 21.17 Azariah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Jehoram the son of Ahab at Jezreel because he was sick 7 And the †Heb. treading down destruction of Ahoziah was of God by coming to Joram for when he was come he went out with Jehoram against Jehu the son of Nimshi whom the LORD had anointed * 2 Kin. 9.7 to cut off the house of Ahab 8 And it came to pass that when Jehu was executing judgement upon the house
that war neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it 9 All this have I seen and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt 10 And so I saw the wicked buried who had come and gone from the place of the holy and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done this is also vanity 11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily therefore the heart of the sons of men is â—â—â—ly set in them to do evil 12 ¶ Though a sinner do evil an hundred times and his days be prolonged yet surely I know that * Ps 37.11 18 19. it shall be well with them that fear God which fear before him 13 But it shall not be well with the wicked neither shall he prolong his days which are as a shadow because he feareth not before God 14 There is a vanity which is done upon the earth that there be just men unto whom it * Ps 13.14 hapneth according to the work of the wicked again there be wicked men to whom it hapneth according to the work of the righteous I said that this also is vanity 15 * Ch. 3.22 Then I commended mirth because a man hath no better thing under the sun then to eat and to drink and to be merry for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life which God giveth him under the sun 16 ¶ When I applied mine heart to know wisdom and to see the business that is done upon the earth for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes 17 Then I behold all the work of God that a man cannot finde out the work that is done under the sun because though a man labour to seek it out yet he shall not finde it yea further though a wise man think to know it yet shall be not be able to finde it CHAP. IX 1 Like things happen to good and bad 4 There is a necessity of death unto men 7 Comfort is all their portion in this life 11 Gods providence ruleth over all 13 Wisdom is better then strength FOr all this †Heb. I gave or sit to my heart I considered in my heart even to declare all this that the righteous and the wise and their works are in the hand of God no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them 2 * Ps 73.3 12 13. Psal 3.15 All things come alike to all there is one event to the righteous and to the wicked to the good and to the clean and to the unclean to him that sacrificeth and to him that sacrificeth not as is the good so is the sinner and he that sweareth as be that feareth an oath 3 This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun that there is one event unto all yea also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil and madness is in their heart while they live and after that they go to the dead 4 ¶ For to him that is joyned to all the living there is hope for a living dog is better then a dead lion 5 For the living know that they shall die but the dead know not any thing neither have they any more a reward for the memory of them is forgotten 6 Also their love and their hatred and their envy is now perished neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun 7 ¶ Go thy way eat thy bread with joy and drink thy wine with a merry heart for God now accepteth thy works 8 Let thy garments be always white and let thy head lack no ointment 9 †Heb. see or enjoy life Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity which he hath given thee under the sun all the days of thy vanity * Ch. 2.24 3.13 5.18 for that is thy portion in this life and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun 10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do do it with thy might for there is no work nor device nor knowledge nor wisdom in the grave whither thou goest 11 ¶ I returned and saw under the sun that the race is not to the swilt nor the battel to the strong neither yet bread to the wise nor yet riches to men of understanding nor yet favour to men of skill but time and chance hapneth to them all 12 For man also knoweth not his time as the fishes that are taken in an evil net as the birds that are caught in the snare so are the sons of men * Pr. 29.6 snared in an evil time when it falleth suddenly upon them 13 ¶ This wisdom have I seen also under the sun and it seemed great unto me 14 There was a little city and few men within it and there came a great king against it besieged it built great bulwarks against it 15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man and he by his wisdom delivered the city yet no man remembred that same poor man 16 * Pr. 21.22 Ch. 7.19 Then said I Wisdom is better then strength nevertheless the poor mans wisdom is despised and his words are not heard 17 The words of wâ—se men are heard in quiet more then the cry of him that ruleth among fools 18 Wisdom is better then weapons of war but one sinner destroyeth much good CHAP. X 1 Observations of wisdom and folly â—6 Of â—iot 18 â—lotifuâ—â—â—is 19 and maâ—â—y 20 Mens thoughts of kings ought to be reverent †Heb. Flies of death DEad flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour 2 A wise mans heart is at his right hand but a fools heart is at his lest 3 Yea also when he that is a fool walketh by the way †Heb. his heart his wisdom faileth him and he saith to every one that he is a fool 4 It the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee leave not thy place for yeelding pacifieth great offences 5 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun as an errour which proceedeth †Heb. from before from the ruler 6 Folly is set †Heb. in great heights in great dignity and the rich sit in low place 7 I have seen servants * Pr. 30.22 upon horses and princes walking as servants upon the earth 8 * Ps 7.15 Pr. 26.27 He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it and whoso breaketh an hedge a serpent shall bite him 9 Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith and he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby 10 If the iron be blunt and he do not whet the edge then must he put to more
utterly ‖ Or abolished rooted out 11 Who then should make more mourning then she that hath lost so great a multitude and not thou which art sorry but for one 12 But if thou sayest unto me My lamentation is not like the earths because I have lost the fruit of my womb which I brought forth with pains and bare with sorrows 13 ‖ But the earth after the manner of the earth whereinto the present multitude is gone again as it came out But the earth not so for the multitude present in it according to the course of the earth is gone as it came 14 Then say I unto thee Like as thou hast brought forth with labour even so the earth also hath given her fruit namely man ever since the beginning unto him that made her 15 Now therefore keep thy sorrow to thy self and bear with a good courage that which hath be faln thee 16 For it thou shalt acknowledge the determination of God to be just thou shalt both receive thy son in time and shalt be commended amongst women 17 Go thy way then into the city to thine husband 18 And she said unto me That will I not do I will not go into the city but here will I die 19 So I proceeded to speak further unto her and said 20 Do not so but be counselled by me for how many are the adversities of Sion be comforted in regard of the sorrow of Jerusalem 21 For thou seest that our sanctuary is said waste our altar broken down our temple destroyed 22 Our psaltery is laid on the ground our song is put to silence our rejoycing is at an end the light of our candlestick is put out the ark of our covenant is spoiled our holy things are defiled and the name that is called upon us is almost profaned our children are put to shame our priests are burnt our Levites are gone into captivity our virgins are defiled and our wives ravished our righteous men carried away our little ones destroyed our young men are brought in bondage and our strong men are become weak 23 And which is the greatest of all the seal of Sion hath now lost her honour for she is delivered into the hands of them that hate us 24 And therefore shake off thy great heaviness and put away the multitude of sorrows that the Mighty may be merciful unto thee again and the Highest shall give thee rest and ease from thy labour 25 And it came to pass while I was talking with her behold her face upon a sudden shined exceedingly and her countenance glistered so that I was afraid of her and mused what it might be 26 And behold suddenly she made a great cry very fearful so that the earth shook at the noise of the woman 27 And I looked and behold the woman appeared unto me no more but there was a city builded and a large place shewed it self from the foundations then was I afraid and cried with a loud voice and said 28 Where is * Ch. 4.1 Uriel the angel who came unto me at the first for he hath caused me to fall ‖ Or into the multitude in a trance into many trances and mine end is turned into corruption and my prayer to rebuke 29 And as I was speaking these words behold he came unto me and looked upon me 30 And so I say as one that had been dead and mine understanding was taken from me and he took me by the right hand and comforted me and set me upon my feet and said unto me 31 What aileth thee and why art thou so disquieted and why is thine understanding troubled and the thoughts of thine heart 32 And I said Because thou hast forsaken me and yet I did according to thy * Chap 5.20 words and I went into the field and so I have seen and yet see that I am not able to express 33 And he said unto me Stand up manfully and I will advise thee 34 Then said I Speak on my lord in me onely forsake me not lest I die frustrate of my hope 35 For I have seen that I knew not and hear that I do not know 36 Or is my sense deceived or my soul in a dream 37 Now therefore I beseech thee that thou wilt shew thy servant of this ‖ Or trance vision 38 He answered me then and said Hear me and I shall inform thee and tell thee wherefore thou art afraid for the Highest will reveal many secret things unto thee 39 He hath seen that thy ‖ Or purpose way is right for that thou sorrowest continually for thy people and makest great lamentation for Sion 40 This therefore is the meaning of the vision which thou lately sawest 41 Thou sawest a woman mourning and thou beganst to comfort her 42 But now seest thou the likeness of the woman no more but there appeared unto thee a city builded 43 And whereas she told thee of the death of her son this is the ‖ Or interpretation solution 44 This woman whom thou sawest is Sion and whereas she said unto thee even she whom thou seest as a city builded 45 Whereas I say she said unto thee that she hath been thirty years barren those are the thirty years wherein there was no offering made in her 46 But after thirty years Solomon builded the city and offered offerings and then bare the barren a son 47 And whereas she told thee that she nourished him with labour that was the dwelling in Jerusalem 48 But whereas she said unto thee That my son coming into his marriage-chamber hapned to have a fall and died this was the destruction that came to Jerusalem 49 And behold thou sawest her likeness and because she mourned for her son thou beganst to comfort her and of these things which have chanced these are to be opened unto thee 50 For now the most High seeth that thou art grieved unfeignedly and sufferest from thy whole heart for her so hath he shewed thee the brightness of her glory and the comeliness of her beauty 51 And therefore I bade thee remain in the field where no house was builded 52 For I knew that the Highest would shew this unto thee 53 Therefore I commanded thee to go into the field where no foundation of any building was 54 For in the place wherein the Highest beginneth to shew his city there can no mans building be able to stand 55 And therefore sear not let not thine heart he affrighted but go thy way in and see the beauty and greatness of the building as much as thine eyes be able to see 56 And then shalt thou hear as much as thine ears may comprehend 57 For thou art blessed above many other and ‖ Or at called to be with c. art called with the Highest and so are but few 58 But to morrow at night thou shalt remain here 59 And so shall the Highest shew thee visions of the ‖ Or
the love of wisdom is above them both 21 The pipe and the psaltery make sweet melody but a pleasant tongue is above them both 22 Thine eye desireth favour and beauty but more then both corn while it is green 23 A friend and companion never meet amiss but above both is a wife with her husband 24 Brethren and help are against time of trouble but alms shall deliver more then them both 25 Gold and silver make the foot stand sure but counsel is esteemed above them both 26 Riches and strength lift up the heart but the fear of the Lord is above them both there is no want in the fear of the Lord and it needeth not to seek help 27 The fear of the Lord is ‖ Or a garden that is blessed a fruitful garden and * Isa 4.5 covereth him above all glory 28 My son lead not a beggars life for better it is to die then to beg 29 The life of him that dependeth on another mans table is not to be counted for a life for he polluteth himself with other mens meat but a wise man well-nurtured will beware thereof 30 Begging is sweet in the mouth of the shameless but in his belly there shall burn a fire CHAP. XLI 1 The remembrance of death 3 Death is not to be feared 5 The ungodly shall be accursed 11 Of an evil and a good name 14 Wisdom is to be uttered 16 Of what things we should be ashamed O Death how bitter is the remembrance of thee to a man that liveth at rest in his possessions unto the man that hath nothing to vex him and that hath prosperity in all things yea unto him that is yet able to receive meat 2 O death acceptable is thy sentence unto the needy and unto him whose strength faileth that is now in the last age and ‖ Or to whom every thing 〈◊〉 troublesenâ—â— is vexed with all things and to him that despaireth and hath lost patience 3 Fear not the sentence of death remember them that have been before thee and that come after for this is the sentence of the Lord over all flesh 4 And why art thou against the pleasure of the most High there is no inquisition in the grave whether thou have lived ten or an hundred or a thousand years 5 The children of sinners are abominable children and they that are conversant in the dwelling of the ungodly 6 The inheritance of sinners children shall perish and their posterity shall have a perpetual reproach 7 The children will complain of an ungodly father because they shall be reproached for his sake 8 Wo be unto you ungodly men which have forsaken the law of the most High God for if you increase it shall be to your destruction 9 And if you be born you shall be born to a curse and if you die a curse shall be your portion 10 * Chap. â—0 11 All that are of the earth shall turn to earth again so the ungodly shall go from a curse to destruction 11 The mourning of men is about their bodies but an ill name of sinners shall be blotted out 12 Have regard to thy name for that shall continue with thee above a thousand great treasures of gold 13 A good life hath but few days but a good name endureth for ever 14 My children keep discipline in peace for wisdom that is hid and a treasure that is not seen what profit is in them both 15 A man that hideth his foolishness is better then a man that hideth his wisdom 16 Therefore be shamefac'd according to my word for it is not good to retain all shamefac'dness neither is it altogether approved in every thing 17 Be ashamed of whoredom before father and mother and of a lie before a prince and a mighty man 18 Of an offence before a judge and ruler of iniquity before a congregation and people of unjust dealing before thy partner and friend 19 And of theft in regard of the place where thou sojournest and in regard of the truth of God and his covenant and to lean with thine elbow upon the meat and of scorning to give and take 20 And of silence before them that salute thee and to look upon an harlot 21 And to turn away thy face from thy kinsman or to take away a portion or a gift or to gaze upon another mans wife 22 Or to be over-busie with his maid and come not near her bed or of upbraiding speeches before friends and after thou had given upbraid not 23 Or of iterating and speaking again that which thou hast heard and of revealing of secrets 24 So shalt thou be truly shamefac'd and finde favour before all men CHAP. XLII 1 Whereof we should not be ashamed 9 Be careful of thy daughter 12 Beware of a woman 15 The works and greatness of God OF these things be not thou ashamed and accept no person to sin thereby 2 Of the law of the most High and his covenant and of judgement to justifie the ungodly 3 ‖ Or Of thy partners speech Of reckoning with thy partners and ‖ Or companions travellers or ‖ Or of the giving of the gift of the heritage of friends 4 Of exactness of balance and weights or of getting much or little 5 And of merchants ‖ Or without profit indifferent selling of much correction of children and to make the side of an evil servant to bleed 6 Sure keeping is good where an evil wife is and shut up where many hands are 7 Deliver all things in number and weight and put all in writing that thou ‖ Or dealest for givest out or receivest in 8 Be not ashamed to ‖ Or rebuke inform the unwise and foolish and the extreme aged ‖ Or that is accused of fornication that contendeth with those that are young thus shalt thou be truly learned and approved of all men living 9 The father waketh for the daughter when no man knoweth and the care for her taketh away sleep when she is young lest she pass away the flower of her age and being married lest she should be hated 10 In her virginity lest she should be defiled and gotten with childe in her fathers house and having an husband lest she should misbehave her self and when she is married lest she should be barren 11 Keep a sure watch over a shameless daughter lest she make thee a laughing stock to thine enemies and a by-word in the city and a reproach among the people and make thee ashamed before the multitude 12 Behold not every bodies * Chap. 25.21 beauty and sit not in the midst of women 13 For from garments cometh a moth and * Gen. 3.6 from women wickedness 14 Better is the ‖ Or wickedness churlishness of a man then a courteous woman a woman I say which bringeth shame and reproach 15 I will now remember the works of the Lord and declare the things that I have seen
and set a diadem on thine head of the glory of the Everlasting 3 For God will shew thy brightness unto every countrey under heaven 4 For thy name shall be called of God for ever The peace of righteousness and the glory of Gods worship 5 Arise O Jerusalem and stand on high and look about toward the east and behold thy children gathered from the west unto the east by the word of the holy One rejoycing in the remembrance of God 6 For they departed from thee on foot and were led away of their enemies but God bringeth them unto thee exalted with glory as children of the kingdom 7 For God hath appointed that every high hill and banks of long continuance should be cast down and valleys filled up to make even the ground that Israel may go safely in the glory of God 8 Moreover even the woods and every sweet-smelling tree shall overshadow Israel by the commandment of God 9 For God shall lead Israel I with joy in the light of his glory with the mercy and righteousness that cometh from him CHAP. VI. 1 The cause of their captivity is their sin 3 The place whereto they were carried is Babylon the vanity of whose idols and idolatry is set forth at larâ—e in this chapter ¶ A copy of an epistle which Jeremy sent unto them which were to be led captives into Babylon by the king of the Babylonians to certify them as it was commanded him of God BEcause of the sins which ye have committed before God ye shall be led away captives into Babylon by Nabuchodonosor king of the Babylonians 3 So when ye be come unto Babylon ye shall remain there many years and for a long season namely seven generations and after that I will bring you away peaceably from thence 4 * Ps 115.4 Isa 44.8 9 10. 46.5.7 Wisd 13.10 Now shall ye see in Babylon gods of silver and of gold and of wood born upon shoulders which cause the nations to fear 5 Beware therefore that ye in no wise be like to strangers neither be ye afraid of them when ye see the multitude before them and behinde them worshipping them 6 But say ye in your hearts O Lord we must worship thee 7 For mine angel is with you and I my self caring for your souls 8 As for their tongue it is polished by the workman and they themselves are gilded and laid over with gold yet are they but false and cannot speak 9 And taking gold as it were for a virgin that loves to go gay they make crowns for the herds of their gods 10 Sometimes also the priests convey from their gods gold and silver and bestow it upon themselves 11 Yea they will give thereof to the ‖ Or which prostitute themselves openly common harlots and deck them as men with garments being gods of silver and gods of gold and wood 12 Yet cannot these gods save themselves from rust and moths though they be covered with purple raiment 13 They wipe their faces because of the dust of the temple when there is much upon them 14 And he that cannot put to death one that offendeth him holdeth a sceptre as though he were a judge of the countrey 15 He hath also in his right hand a dagger and an ax but cannot deliver himself from war and theeves 16 Whereby they are known not to be gods therefore fear them not 17 For like as a vessel that a man useth is nothing worth when it is broken even so it is with their gods when they be set up in the temple their eyes be full of dust through the feet of them that come in 18 And as the ‖ Or courts doors are made sure on every side upon him that offendeth the king as being committed to suffer death even so the priests make fast their temples with doors with locks and bars lest their gods be spoiled with robbers 19 They light them candles yea more then for themselves whereof they cannot see one 20 They are as one of the beams of the temple yet they say their hearts are †Gr. licked gnawed upon by things creeping out of the earth and when they eat them and their clothes they feel it not 21 Their faces are blacked through the smoke that comes out of the temple 22 Upon their bodies and heads sit bats swallows and birds and the cats also 23 By this you may know that they are no gods therefore fear them not 24 Notwithstanding the gold that is about them to make them beautiful except they wipe off the rust they will not shine for neither when they were molten did they feel it 25 The things wherein there is no breath are bought for ‖ Or any price a most high price 26 * Isa 46.7 They are born upon shoulders having no feet whereby they declare unto men that they be nothing worth 27 They also that serve them are ashamed for if they fall to the ground at any time they cannot rise up again of themselves neither if one let them upright can they move of themselves neither if they be bowed down can they make themselves straight but they set ‖ Or offerings gifts before them as unto dead men 28 As for the things that are sacrificed unto them their priests sell and ‖ Or spend abuse in like manner their wives lay up part thereof in salt but unto the poor and impotent they give nothing of it 29 Menstruous women and women in childbed * Lev. 12.4 eat their sacrifices by these things ye may know that they are no gods fear them not 30 For how can they be called gods because women set meat before the gods of silver gold and wood 31 And the priests sit in their temples having their clothes rent and their heads and beards shaven and nothing upon their heads 32 They rore and cry before their gods as men do at the feast when one is dead 33 The priests also take off their garments and clothe their wives and children 34 Whether it be evil that one doeth unto them or good they are not able to recompense it they can neither set up a king nor put him down 35 In like manner they can neither give riches nor money though a man make a vow unto them and keep it not they will not require it 36 They can save no man from death neither deliver the weak from the mighty 37 They cannot restore a blinde man to his sight nor help any man in his distress 38 They can shew no mercy to the widow nor do good to the fatherless 39 Their gods of wood and which are overlaid with gold and silver are like the stones that be hewn out of the mountain they that worship them shall be confounded 40 How should a man then think and say that they are gods when even the Caldeans themselves dishonour them 41 Who if they shall see one dumb that cannot speak they ‖ Or bid

III. 1 Lest their false teachers should charge him with vain-glory he sheweth the faith and graces of the Corinthians to be a sufficient commendation of his ministery 6 Whereupon entring a comparison between the ministers of the law and of the gospel 12 he proveth that his ministery is so far the more excellent as the gospel of life and liberty is more glorious then the law of condemnation DO we begin again to commend our selves or need we as some others epistles of commendation to you or letters of commendation from you 2 Ye are our epistle written in our hearts known read of all men 3 For as much as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministred by us written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God not in tables of stone but in fleshly tables of the heart 4 And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward 5 Not that we are sufficient of our selves to think any thing as of our selves but our sufficiency is of God 6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament not of the letter but of the spirit for the letter killeth but the spirit ‖ Or quickneth giveth life 7 But if the ministration of death written and engraven in stones was glorious so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance which glory was to be done away 8 How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious 9 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory 10 For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect by reason of the glory that excelleth 11 For if that which is done away was glorious much more that which remaineth is glorious 12 Seeing then that we have such hope we use great ‖ Or boldness plainness of speech 13 And not as Moses * Exod. 34.33 which put a vail over his face that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished 14 But their mindes were blinded for until this day remaineth the same vail untâ—ken away in the reading of the old testament which vail is done away in Christ 15 But even unto this day when Moses is read the vail is upon their heart 16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord the vail shall be taken away 17 Now the Lord is that Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty 18 But we all with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord are changed into the same image from glory to glory even as ‖ Or of the Lord the Spirit by the Spirit of the Lord. CHAP. IV. 1 He declareth how he hath used all sincerity and faithful diligence in preaching the â—ospel 7 and how the troubles and persecutions which be daily endureth for the same did redound to the praise of Gods power 12 to the benefit of the church 16 and to the apostle's own eternal glory THerefore seeing we have this ministery as we have received mercy we faint not 2 But have renounced the hidden things of †Or. shâ—me dishonesty not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully but by manifestation of the truth commending our selves to every mans conscience in the sight of God 3 But if our gospel be hid it is hid to them that are lost 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which beleeve not lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ who is the image of God should shine unto them 5 For we preach not our selves but Christ Jesus the Lord and our selves your servants for Jesus sake 6 For God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness hath shined in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ 7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels that the excellency of the power may be of God and not of us 8 We are troubled on every side yet not distressed we are perplexed but ‖ Or not altogether without help or means not in despair 9 Persecuted but not forsaken cast down but not destroyed 10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body 11 For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus sake that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh 12 So then death worketh in us but life in you 13 We having the same spirit of faith according as it is written * Psal 11â— 10 I beleeved and therefore have I spoken we also beleeve and therefore speak 14 Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus and shall present us with you 15 For all things are for your sakes that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God 16 For which cause we faint not but though our outward man perish yet the inward man is renewed day by day 17 For our light affliction which is but for a moment worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory 18 While we look not at the things which are seen but at the things which are not seen for the things which are seen are temporal but the things which are not seen are eternal CHAP. V. 1 That in his assured hope of immortal glory 9 and in expâ—ctance of it and of the general judgement he laboureth to keep a good conscirence 12 not that he may herein boast of himself 14 but as one that having received life from Christ endeavoureth to live as a new creature to Christ onely 18 and by his ministery of reconciliation to reconcile others also in Christ to God FOr we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved we have a building of God an house not made with hands eternal in the heavens 2 For in this we groan earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven 3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked 4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan being burdened not for that we would be unclothed but clothed upon that mortality might be swallowed up of life 5 Now he that hath wrought us for the self same thing is God who also hath given unto us the earnest of
