shall first set forth 10 ¶ On the south-side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their armies and the captain of the children of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur 11 And his host and those that were numbred thereof were fourty and six thousand and five hundred 12 And those which pitch by him shall be the tribe of Simâ—on and the captain of the children of Simeon shall be Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai 13 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fifty and â—ine thousand and three hundred 14 Then the tribe of Gad and the captain of the sons of Gad shall be Eliasaph the son of Reuel 15 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty and five thousand and six hundred and fifty 16 All that were numbred in the camp of Reuben were an hundred thousand and fifty and one thousand and four hundred and fifty throughout their armies and they shall set forth in the second rank 17 ¶ Then the tabernacle of the congregation shall set forward with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camp as they encamp so shall they set forward every man in his place by their standards 18 ¶ On the west-side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their armies and the captain of the sons of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud 19 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty thousand and five hundred 20 And by him shall be the tribe of Manasseh and the captain of the children of Manasseh shall be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur 21 And his host and those that were numbred of them were thirty and two thousand and two hundred 22 Then the tribe of Benjamin and the captain of the sons of Benjamin shall be Abidan the son of Gideoni 23 And his host and those that were numbred of them were thirty and five thousand and four hundred 24 All that were numbred of the camp of Ephraim were an hundred thousand and eight thousand and an hundred throughout their armies and they shall go forward in the third rank 25 ¶ The standard of the camp of Dan shall be on the north-side by their armies and the captain of the children of Dan shall be Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai 26 And his host and those that were numbred of them were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred 27 And those that encamp by him shall be the tribe of Asher and the captain of the children of Asher shall be Pagiel the son of Ocran 28 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty and one thousand and five hundred 29 Then the tribe of Naphtali and the captain of the children of Naphtali shall be Ahira the son of Enan 30 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fifty and three thousand and four hundred 31 All they that were numbred in the camp of Dan were an hundred thousand and fifty and seven thousand and six hundred they shall go hindmost with their standards 32 ¶ These are those which were numbred of the children of Israel by the house of their fathers all those that were numbred of the camps throughout their hosts were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty 33 But the Levites were not numbred among the children of Israel as the LORD commanded Moses 34 And the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses so they pitched by their standards and so they set forward every one after their families according to the house of their fathers CHAP. III. 1 The sons of Aaron 5 The Levites are given to the priests for the service of the tabernacleâ— 11 in stead of the first-born 14 The Levites are numbred by their families 21 The families number and charge of the Gershonites 27 of the Koâ—athites 33 of the Merarites 38 The place and charge of Moses and Aaron 40 The first-born are freed by the Levites 44 The overplus are redeemed THese also are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that the LORD spake with Moses in mount Sinai 2 And these are the names of the sons of Aaron Nadab the * Exod. 6.23 first-born and Abihu Eleazar and Ithamar 3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron the priests which were anointed †Heb. whose hand be filled whom he consecrated to minister in the priests office 4 * Lev. 10.1 Ch. 26.61 1 Chr. 24.2 And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD when they offered strange fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai and they had no children and Eleazar and Ithamar ministred in the priests office in the sight of Aaron their father 5 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 6 Bring the tribe of Levi near and present them before Aaron the priest that they may minister unto him 7 And they shall keep his charge and the charge of the whole congregation before the tabernacle of the congregation to do the service of the tabernacle 8 And they shall keep all the instruments of the tabernacle of the congregation and the charge of the children of Israel to do the service of the tabernacle 9 And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons they are wholly given unto him out of the children of Israel 10 And thou shalt appoint Aaron and his sons and they shall wait on their priests office and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death 11 ¶ And the LORD spake unte Moses saying 12 And I behold I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel in stead of all the first-born that openeth the matrice among the children of Israel therefore the Levites shall be mine 13 Because all the first-born are mine * Exod. 13.2 Lev. 27.26 Chap. 8.16 Luk. 2.23 for on the day that I smote all the first born in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto me all the first-born in Israel both man and beast mine they shall be I am the LORD 14 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai saying 15 Number the children of Levi after the house of their fathers by their families every male from a moneth old and upward shalt thou number them 16 And Moses numbred them according to the †Heb. mouth word of the LORD as he was commanded 17 * Gen. 46.11 Exod. 6.16 Ch. 26.57 1 Chro. 6.1 And these were the sons of Levi by their names Gershon and Kohath and Merari 18 And these are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families Libni and Shimei 19 And the sons of Kohath by their families Amram and Izehar Hebron and Uzziel 20 And the sons of Merari by their families Mahli and Mushi these are the families of the Levites according to the house of their fathers 21 Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites and the family
of the Shimites these are the families of the Gershonites 22 Those that were numbred of them according to the number of all the males from a moneth old and upward even those that were numbred of them were seven thousand and five hundred 23 The families of the Gershonites shall pitch behinde the tabernacle west-ward 24 And the chief of the house of the father of the Gershonites shall be Eliasaph the son of Lael 25 And the charge of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation shall be the tabernacle and the tent the covering thereof and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation 26 And the hangings of the court and the curtain for the door of the court which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about and the cords of it for all the service thereof 27 ¶ And of Kohath was the family of the Amramites and the family of the Izeharites and the family of the Hebronites and the family of the Uzzielites these are the families of the Kohathites 28 In the number of all the males from a moneth old and uâ—ward were eight thousand six hundred keeping the charge of the sanctâ—ary 29 The families of the sons of Kohath shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle south-ward 30 And the chief of the house of the father of the families of the Kohathites shall be Elizaphan the son of Uzziel 31 And their charge shall be the ark and the table and the candlestick and the altars and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith they minister and the hanging and all the service thereof 32 And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be chief over the chief of the Levites and have the oversight of them that keep the charge of the sanctuary 33 ¶ Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites and the family of the Mushites these are the families of Merari 34 And those that were numbred of them according to the number of all the males from a moneth old and upward were six thousand and two hundred 35 And the chief of the house of the father of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail these shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle north-ward 36 And †Heb. the office of the charge under the custody and charge of the sons of Merari shall be the boards of the tabernacle and the bars thereof and the pillars thereof and the sockets thereof and all the vessels thereof and all that serveth thereto 37 And the pillars of the court round about and their sockets and their pins and their cords 38 ¶ But those that encamp before the tabernacle toward the east even before the tabernacle of the congregation east-ward shall be Moses and Aaron and his sons keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Israel and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death 39 All that were numbred of the Levites which Moses and Aaron numbred at the commandment of the LORD throughout their families all the males from a moneth old and upward were twenty and two thousand 40 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Number all the first-born of the males of the children of Israel from a moneth old and upward and take the number of their names 41 And thou shalt take the Levites for me I am the LORD in stead of all the first-born among the children of Israel and the cattel of the Levites instead of all the firstlings among the cattel of the children of Israel 42 And Moses numbred as the LORD commanded him all the first-born among the children of Israel 43 And all the first-born males by the number of names from a moneth old and upward of those that were numbred of them were twenty and two thousand two hundred and threescore and thirteen 44 And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 45 Take the Levites in stead of all the first-born among the children of Israel and the cattel of the Levites in stead of their cattel and the Levites shall be mine I am the LORD 46 And for those that are to be redeemed of the two hundred and threescore and thirteen of the first-born of the children of Israel which are more then the Levites 47 Thou shalt even take five shekels a piece by the poll after the shekel of the sanctuary shalt thou take them * Exod. 30.13 Lev. 27.25 Ch. 18.16 Ezek. 45.12 the shekel is twenty gerahs 48 And thou shalt give the money wherewith the odd number of them is to be redeemed unto Aaron and to his sons 49 And Moses took the redemption-money of them that were over and above them that were redeemed by the Levites 50 Of the first-born of the children of Israel took he the money a thousand three hundred and threescore and five shekels after the shekel of the sanctuary 51 And Moses gave the money of them that were redeemed unto Aaron and to his sons according to the word of the LORD as the LORD commanded Moses CHAP. IV. 1 The age and time of the Levites service 4 The carriage of the Kohathites when the priests have taken down the tabernacle 16 The charge of Eleazar 17 The office of the priests 21 The carriage of the Gershonites 29 The carriage of the Merarites 34 The number of the Kohathites 38 of the Gershonites 42 and of the Merarites ANd the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron saying 2 Take the sum of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi after their families by the house of their fathers 3 From thirty years old upward even until fifty years old all that enter into the host to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation 4 This shall be the service of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation about the most holy things 5 ¶ And when the camp setteth forward Aaron shall come and his sons and they shall take down the covering vail and cover the ark of testimony with it 6 And shall put thereon the covering of badgers skins and shall spread over it a cloth wholly of blue and shall put in the staves thereof 7 And upon the * Ex. 25.30 table of shew-bread they shall spread a cloth of blue and put thereon the dishes and the spoons and the bowls and covers to ‖ Or pour out withal cover withal and the continual bread shall be thereon 8 And they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet and cover the same with a covering of badgers skins and shall put in the staves thereof 9 And they shall take a cloth of blue and cover the * Exod. 25.31 candlestick of the light * Exod. 25.37 38. and his lamps and his tongs and his snuff-dishes and all the oyl-vessels thereof wherewith they mâ—nister unto it 10 And they shall put it and all the vessels thereof within a covering of badgers skins and shall put it upon a bar 11 And
with them for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel when they came up out of Egypt So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites 7 And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to Shur that is over against Egypt 8 And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword 9 But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep and of the oxen and ‖ Or of the second sort of the fatlings and the lambs and all that was good and would not utterly destroy them but every thing that was vile and refuse that they destroyed utterly 10 ¶ Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel saying 11 It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king for he is turned back from following me and hath not performed my commandments And it grieved Samuel and he cried unto the LORD all night 12 And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning it was told Samuel saying Saul came to Carmel and behold he set him up a place and is gone about and passed on and gone down to Gilgal 13 And Samuel came to Saul and Saul said unto him Blessed be thou of the LORD I have performed the commandment of the LORD 14 And Samuel said What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears and the lowing of the oxen which I hear 15 And Saul said They have brought them from the Amalekites for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God and the rest we have utterly destroyed 16 Then Samuel said unto Saul Stay and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night And he said unto him say on 17 And Samuel said When thou wast little in thine own sight wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel 18 And the LORD sent thee on a journey and said Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites and fight against them until †Heb. they consume them they be consumed 19 Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD but didst flie upon the spoil and didst evil in the sight of the LORD 20 And Saul said unto Samuel Yea I have obeyed the voice of the LORD and have gone the way which the LORD sent me and have brought Agag the king of Amalek and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites 21 But the people took of the spoil sheep and oxen the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal 22 And Samuel said Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt-offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the LORD Behold * Eccles 5.1 Hos 6.6 Mat. 9.13 12.7 to obey is better then sacrifice and to hearken then the fat of rams 23 For rebellion is as the sin of †Heb. divination witchcraft and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD he hath also rejected thee from being king 24 ¶ And Saul said unto Samuel I have sinned for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD and thy words because I feared the people and obeyed their voice 25 Now therefore I pray thee pardon my sin and turn again with me that I may worship the LORD 26 And Samuel said unto Saul I will not return with thee for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel 27 And as Samuel turned about to go away he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle and it rent 28 And Samuel said unto him The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day and hath given it to a neighbour of thine that is better then thou 29 And also the ‖ Or eternity o◠victory strength of Israel will not lie nor repent for he is not a man that he should repent 30 Then he said I have sinned yet honour me now I pray thee before the elders of my people and before Israel and turn again with me that I may worship the LORD thy God 31 So Samuel turned again after Saul and Saul worshipped the LORD 32 ¶ Then said Samuel Bring you hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites and Agag came unto him delicately And Agag said Surely the bitterness of death is past 33 And Samuel said * Exod. 17.11 Numb 14 45. As thy sword hath made women childless so shall thy mother be childless among women And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal 34 ¶ Then Samuel went to Ramah and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul 35 And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel CHAP. XVI 1 Samuel sent by God under pretense of a sacrifice cometh to Beth-lehem 6 His humane judgement is reproved 11 He anointeth David 19 Saul sendeth for David to quiet his evil spirit ANd the LORD said unto Samuel How long wilt thou mourn for Saul seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel fill thine horn with oyl and go I will send thee to Jesse the Beth-lehemite for I have provided me a king among his sons 2 And Samuel said How can I go if Saul hear it he will kill me And the LORD said Take an heifer †Heb. in thine hand with thee and say I am come to sacrifice to the LORD 3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice and I will shew thee what thou shalt do and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee 4 And Samuel did that which the LORD spake and came to Beth-lehem and the elders of the town trembled at his †Heb. meeting coming and said Comest thou peaceably 5 And he said Peaceably I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD sanctifie your selves and come with me to the sacrifice And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and called them to the sacrifice 6 ¶ And it came to pass when they were come that he looked on Eliab and said Surely the LORDs anointed is before him 7 But the LORD said unto Samuel Look not on his countenance or on the height of his stature because I have refused him for the LORD seeth not as man seeth for man looketh on the †Heb. eyes outward appearance but the LORD looketh on the * 1 Chr. 23.9 Psal 7.9 Jer. 11.20 17.10 20.12 heart 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel and he said Neither hath the LORD chosen this 9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by and he said Neither hath the LORD chosen this 10 Again Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel and Samuel said unto Jesse

Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau Reuel the son of Bashemath the wife of Esau 11 And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman Omar Zepho and Gatam and Kenaz 12 And Timna was concubine to Eliphaz Esaus son and she bare to Eliphaz Amalek these were the sons of Adah Esaus wife 13 And these are the sons of Reuel Nahath and Zerah Shammah and Mizzah these were the sons of Bashemath Esaus wife 14 ¶ And these were the sons of Aholibamah the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon Esaus wife and she bare to Esau Jeush and Jaalam and Korah 15 ¶ These were dukes of the sons of Esau the sons of Eliphaz the first-born son of Esau duke Teman duke Omar duke Zepho duke Kenaz 16 Duke Korah duke Gatam and duke Amalek These are the dukes that came of Eliphaz in the land of Edom these were the sons of Adah 17 ¶ And these are the sons of Reuel Esaus son duke Nahath duke Zerah duke Shammah duke Mizzah These are the dukes that came of Reuel in the land of Edom these are the sons of Bashemath Esaus wife 18 ¶ And these are the sons of Aholibamah Esaus wife duke Jeush duke Jaalam duke Korah these were the dukes that came of Aholibamah the daughter of Anah Esaus wife 19 These are the sons of Esau who is Edom these are their dukes 20 ¶ * 1 Chr. â—â— 38 These are the sons of Seir the Horite who inhabited the land Lotan and Shoâ—al and Zibeon and Anah 21 And Dishon and Ezer and Dishan these are the dukes of the Horites the children of Seir in the land of Edom. 22 And the children of Lotan were Hori and Heman and Lotans sister was Timna 23 And the children of Shobal were these Alvan and Manahath and Ebal Shepho and Onam 24 And these are the children of Zibeon both Ajah and Anah this was that Anah that found the mules in the wilderness as he fed the asses of Zibeon his father 25 And the children of Anah were these Dishon and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah 26 And these are the children of Dishon Hemdan and Eshban and Ithran and Cheran 27 The children of Ezer are these Bishan and Zaavan and Achan 28 The children of Dishan are these Uz and Aran. 29 These are the dukes that came of the Horites duke Lotan duke Shobal duke Zibeon duke Anah 30 Duke Dishon duke Ezer duke Dishan these are the dukes that came of Hori among their dukes in the land of Seir. 31 ¶ And these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom before there reigned any king over the children of Israel 32 And Bela the son of Beorreigned in Edom and the name of his city was Dinhabah 33 And Bela died and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his stead 34 And Jobab died and Husham of the land of Temani reigned in his stead 35 And Husham died and Hadad the son of Bedad who smote Midian in the field of Moab reigned in his stead and the name of his city was Avith 36 And Hadad died and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his stead 37 And Samlah died and Saul of Rehoboth by the river reigned in his stead 38 And Saul died and Baal-hanan the son of Achbor reigned in his stead 39 And Baal-hanan the son of Achbor died and Hadar reigned in his stead and the name of his city was Pau and his wives name was Mehetabel the daughter of Matred the daughter of Mezahab 40 And these are the names of the dukes that came of Esau according to their families after their places by their names duke Timnah duke Alvah duke Jetheth 41 Duke Aholibamah duke Elah duke Pinon 42 Duke Kenaz duke Teman duke Mibzar 43 Duke Magdiâ—l duke Iram these be the dukes of Edom according to their habitations in the land of their possession he is Esau the father of †Heb. turned himself and went out from Pharaoh 7 And Pharaohs servants said unto him How long shall this man be a snare unto us Let the men go that they may serve the LORD their God Knowest thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed 8 And Moses and Aaron were brought again unto Pharaoh and he said unto them Go serve the LORD your God but †Heb. who and who c. who are they that shall go 9 And Moses said We will go with our young and with our old with our sons and with our daughters with our flocks and with our herds will we go for we must hold a feast unto the LORD 10 And he said unto them Let the LORD be so with you as I will let you go and your little ones look to it for evil is before you 11 Not so go now ye that are men and serve the LORD for that you did desire And they were driven out from Pharaohs presence 12 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Stretch out thine hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts that they may come up upon the land of Egypt and eat every herb of the land even all that the hail hath left 13 And Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt and the LORD brought an east-wind upon the land all that day and all that night and when it was morning the east-wind brought the locusts 14 And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt and rested in all the coasts of Egypt very grievous were they before them there were no such locusts as they neither after them shall be such 15 For they covered the face of the whole earth so that the land was darkned and they did eat every herb of the land and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left and there remained not any green thing in the trees or in the herbs of the field through all the land of Egypt 16 ¶ Then Pharaoh †Heb. hastned to call called for Moses and Aaron in haste and he he said I have sinned against the LORD your God and against you 17 Now therefore forgive I pray thee my sin onely this once and intreat the LORD your God that he may take away from me this death onely 18 And he went out from Pharaoh and intreated the LORD 19 And the LORD turned a mighty strong west-wind which took away the locusts and †Heb. fastned cast them into the Red sea there remained not one locust in all the coasts of Egypt 20 But the LORD hardned Pharaohs heart so that he would not let the children of Israel go 21 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Stretch out thine hand toward heaven that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt †Heb. that one may feel darkness even darkness which may be felt 22 And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days 23 They saw not one another neither rose any from his place for three days * Wisd 18.1 but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings 24 ¶ And Pharaoh called unto Moses and said Go ye serve the LORD onely let your flocks and your herds be stayed let your little ones also go with you 25 And Moses said Thou must give †Heb. into our hands us also sacrifices and burnt-offerings that we may sacrifice unto the LORD our God 26 Our cattel also shall go with us there shall not an hoof be left behinde for thereof must we take to serve the LORD our God and we know not with what we must serve the LORD until we come thither 27 ¶ But the LORD hardned Pharaohs heart and he would not let them go 28 And Pharaoh said unto him Get thee from me take heed to thy self see my face no more for in that day thou seest my face thou shalt die 29 And Moses said Thou hast spoken well I will see thy face again no more CHAP. XI 1 Gods message to the Israelites to borrow jewels of their neighbours 4 Moses threatneth Pharaoh with the death of the first-born ANd the LORD said unto Moses Yet will I bring one plague more upon Pharaph and upon Egypt afterwards he will let you go hence when he shall let you go he shall surely thrust you out hence altogether 2 Speak now in the ears of the people and let every man borrow of his neighbour and every woman of her neighbour * Chap. â— 22 and 12 35. jewels of silver and jewels of gold 3 And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians Moreover the man * Eccluâ— 45.1 Moses was very great in the land of Egypt in the sight of Pharaohs servants and in the sight of the people 4 And Moses said Thus saith the LORD * Chap. 12.29 About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt 5 And all the first-born in the land of Egypt shall die from the first-born of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne even unto the first-born of the maid servant that is behinde the mill and all the first-born of beasts 6 And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt such as there was none like it nor shall be like it any more 7 But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue against man or beast that ye may know how that the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel 8 And all these thy servants shall come down unto me and bow down themselves unto me saying Get thee out and all the people †Heb. that is at thy feet that follow thee and after that I will go out and he went out from Pharaoh in †Heb. heat of anger a great anger 9 And the LORD said unto Moses Pharaoh shall not hearken unto you that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt 10 And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh and the LORD hardned Pharaohs heart so that he would not let the children of Israel go out of his land CHAP. XII 1 The beginning of the year is changed 3 The pass-over is instituted 11 The rice of the pass-over 15Vnleavened bread 29 The first-born are slain 31 The Israelites are driven out of the land 37 They come to Succoth 43 The ordinance of the pass-over ANd the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt saying 2 This moneth shall be unto you the beginning of moneths it shall be the first moneth of the year to you 3 ¶ Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel saying In the tenth day of this moneth they shall take to them every man a ‖ Or kid lamb according to the house of their fathers a lamb for an house 4 And if the hoâ—â—hold be too little for the lamb let him his neighbour next unto his

It is much for you Ye take too much upon you seeing all the congregation are holy everyone of them and the LORD is among them wherefore then lift you up your selves above the congregation of the LORD 4 And when Moses heard it he fell upon his face 5 And he spake unto Korah and unto all his company saying Even to morrow the LORD will shew who are his and who is holy and will cause him to come near unto him even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to come near unto him 6 This do take you censers Korah and all his company 7 And put fire therein and put incense in them before the LORD to morrow and it shall be that the man whom the LORD doth choose he shall be holy ye take too much upon you ye sons of Levi. 8 And Moses said unto Korah Hear I pray you ye sons of Levi 9 Seemeth it but a small thing unto you that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them 10 And he hath brought thee near to him and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee and seek ye the priesthood also 11 For which cause both thou and all thy company are gathered together against the LORD and what is Aaron that ye murmure against him 12 ¶ And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab which said We will not come up 13 Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land that floweth with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness except thou make thy self altogether a prince over us 14 Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land that floweth with milk and honey or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards wilt thou †Heb. here out put out the eyes of these men we will not come up 15 And Moses was very wroth and said unto the LORD * Gen. 4 4. Respect not thou their offering I have not taken one ass from them neither have I hurt one of them 16 And Moses said unto Korah Be thou and all thy company before the LORD thou and they and Aaron to morrow 17 And take every man his censer and put incense in them and bring ye before the LORD every man his censer two hundred and fifty censers thou also and Aaron each of you his censer 18 And they took every man his censer and put fire in them and said incense thereon and stood in the door of the tabernacle of the congregation with Moses and Aaron 19 And Korah gathered all the congregation against them unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the congregation 20 And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron saying 21 Separate your selves from among this congregation that I may consume them in a moment 22 And they fell upon their faces and said O God the God of the spirits of all flesh shall one man sin and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation 23 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 24 Speak unto the congregation saying Get you up from about the taberlacle of Korah Dathan and Abiram 25 And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram and the elders of Israel followed him 26 And he spake unto the congregation saying Depart I pray you from the tents of these wicked men and touch nothing of theirs lest ye be consumed in all their sins 27 So they gat up from the tabernacle of Korah Dathan and Abiram on every side and Dathan and Abiram came out and stood in the door of their tents and their wives and their sons and their little children 28 And Moses said Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works for I have not done them of mine own minde 29 If these men die †Heb. as every man dieth the common death of all men or if they be visited after the visitation of all men then
drieth up 12 So man lieth down and riseth not till the heavens be no more they shall not awake nor â—e raised out of their sleep 13 O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave that thou wouldest keep me secret until thy wrath be past that thou wouldest appoint me a set time and remember me 14 If a man die shall he live again all the days of my appointed time will I wait till my change come 15 Thou shalt call and I will answer thee thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands 16 * Psal 139.2 3. is at rest but the life of the fool is worse then death 12 Seven days do men mourn for him that is dead but for a fool and an ungodly man all the days of his life 13 Talk not much with a fool and go not to him that hath no understanding * Ch. 12.12 beware of him lest thou have trouble and thou shalt never be defiled ‖ Or when â—e sâ—akes off in filth with his fooleries depart from him and thou shalt finde rest and never be ‖ Or wearied disquieted with madness 14 What is heavier then lead what is the name thereof but a fool 15 * Pro. 27.3 Sand and salt and a mass of iron is easier to bear then a man without understanding 16 As timber girt and bound together in a building cannot be loosed with shaking so the heart that is stablished by advised counsel shall fear at no time 17 A heart settled upon a thought of understanding is as a fair plaistering ‖ Or of a polished wall on the wall of a gallery 18 Pales set on an high place will never stand against the wind so a fearful heart in the imagination of a fool cannot stand against any fear 19 He that pricketh the eye will make tears to fall and he that pricketh the heart maketh it to shew her knowledge 20 Whoso casteth a stone at the birds frayeth them away and he that uphraideth his friend breaketh friendship 21 Though thou drewest a sword at thy friend yet despair not for there may be a returning to favour 22 If thou hast opened thy mouth against thy friend fear not for there may be a reconciliation except for upbraiding or pride or disclosing of secrets or a treacherous wound for for these things every friend will depart 23 Be faithful to thy neighbour in his poverty that thou mayest rejoyce in his prosperity abide stedfast unto him in the time of his trouble that thou mayest be heir with him in his heritage for a mean eâ—tate is not always to be contemned nor the rich that is foolish to be had in admiration 24 As the vapour and smoke of a furnace gueth before the fire so reviling before bloud 25 I will not be ashamed to defend a friend neither will I hide my fell from him 26 And if any evil happen unto me by him every one that heareth it will beware of him 27 * Psal 141.3 Who shall set a watch before my mouth and a seal of wisdom upon my lips that I fall not suddenly by them and that my tongue destroy me not CHAP. XXIII 1 A prayer for grace to flee sin 9 We may not use swearing 14 but remember our parents 16 Of three sorts of sin 23 The adulterous wife sinneth many ways O Lord Father and Governour of all my whole life leave me not to their counsels and let me not fall by them 2 Who will set scourges over my thoughts and the discipline of wisdom over mine heart that they spare me not for mine ignorances and it pass not by my sins 3 Lest mine ignorances increase and my sins abound to my destruction and I fall before mine adversaries and mine enemy rejoyce over me whose hope is far from thy mercy 4 O Lord Father and God of my life give me not a proud look but turn away from thy servants always ‖ Or a giant-like a haughty minde 5 Turn away from me vain hopes and concupiscence and thou shalt hold him up that is desirous always to serve thee 6 Let not the greediness of the belly nor lust of the flesh take hold of me and give not over me thy servant into an impudent minde 7 Hear O ye children the discipline of the mouth he that keepeth it shall never be taken in his lips 8 The sinner shall be left in his foolishness both the evil speaker and the proud shall fall thereby 9 * Ex. 20.7 Ch. 27.14 Mat. 5.33 34. Accustom not thy mouth to swearing neither use thy self to the naming of the Holy one 10 For as a servant that is continually beaten shall not be without a blew mark so he that sweareth and nameth God continually shall not be faultless 11 A man that useth much swearing shall be filled with iniquity and the plague shall never depart from his house if he shall offend his sin shall be upon him and if he acknowledge not his sin he maketh a double offence and if he swear in vain he shall not be †Gr. justified innocent but his house shall be full of calamities 12 There is a word that is clothed about with death God grant that it be not found in the heritage of Jacob for all such things shall be far from the godly and they shall not wallow in their sins 13 Use not thy mouth to untemperate swearing for therein is the word of sin 14 Remember thy father and thy mother when thou sittest among great men Be not forgetful before them and so thou by thy custom become a fool and wish that thou hadst not been born and curse the day of thy nativity 15 * 2 Sam. 16.7 The man that is accustomed to opprobrious words will never be reformed all the days of his life 16 Two sorts of men multiply sin and the third will bring wrath a hot minde is as a burning fire it will never be quenched till it be consumed a form catour in the body of his flesh will never cease till he hath kindled a fire 17 * Prov. 9.17 All bread is sweet to a whoremonger he will not leave off till he die 18 A man that breaketh wedlock saying thus in his heart * Job 24.15 Isa 29.15 Who seeth me I am compassed about with darkness the walls cover me and no body seeth me what need I to fear the most High will not remember my sins 19 Such a man onely feareth the eyes of men and knoweth not that the eyes of the Lord are ten thousand times brighter then the sun beholding all the ways of men and considering the most secret parts 20 He knew all things ere ever they were created so also after they were perfected he looked upon them all 21 * Lev. 20.10 Deu. 22.22 This man shall be punished in the streets of the city and where he suspecteth not he shall be taken 22 Thus shall it go also with the wife that leaveth her husband and bringeth in an heir by ‖ Or a stranger another 23 For first she hath disobeyed the * Ex. 20.14 law of the most High and secondly she hath trespassed against her own husband thirdly she hath played the whore in adultery and brought children by another man 24 She shall be brought out into the congregation and ‖ Or visitation inquisition shall be made of her children 25 Her * Wiâ—â— 4.3 children shall not take root and her branches shall bring forth no fruit 26 She shall leave her memory to be

sons came together 17 Then answered the kings officers and said to Mattathias on this wise Thou art a ruler and an honourable and great man in this city and strengthned with sons and brethren 18 Now therefore come thou first and fulfil the kings commandment like as all the heathen have done yea and the men of Juda also and such as remain at Jerusalem so shalt thou and thy house be in the number of the kings friends and thou and thy children shall be honoured with silver and gold and many rewards 19 Then Mattathias answered and spake with a loud voice Though all the nations that are under the kings dominion obey him and fall away every one from the religion of their fathers and give consent to his commandments 20 Yet will I and my sons and my brethren walk in the covenant of our fathers 21 God forbid that we should forsake the law and the ordinances 22 We will not hearken to the kings words to go from our religion either on the right hand or the left 23 Now when he had left speaking these words there came one of the Jews in the light of all to sacrifice on the altar which was at Modin according to the kings commandment 24 Which thing when Mattathias saw he was inflamed with zeal and his reins trembled neither could he forbear to shew his anger according to judgement wherefore he ran and slew him upon the altar 25 Also the kings commissioner who compelled men to sacrifice he killed at that time and the altar he pulled down 26 Thus dealt he zealously for the law of God like as * Numb 25.7 Phinees did unto Zambri the son of Salom. 27 And Mattathias cried throughout the city with a loud voice saying Whosoever is Zealous of the law and maintaineth the covenant let him follow me 28 So he and his sons fled into the mountains and left all that ever they had in the city 29 Then many that sought after justice and judgement went down into the wilderness to †Gr. sit or abide dwell there 30 Both they and their children and their wives and their cattel because †Gr. evils were multiplied upon them afflictions increased sore upon them 31 Now when it was told the kings servants and the host that was at Jerusalem in the city of David that certain men who had broken the kings commandment were gone down into the secret places in the wilderness 32 They pursued after them a great number and having overtaken them they camped against them and made war against them on the sabbath-day 33 And they said unto them Let that which you have done hitherto suffice come forth and do according to the commandment of the king and you shall live 34 But they said We will not come forth neither will we do the kings commandment to profane the sabbath-day 35 So then they gave ‖ Of the Jews them the battel with all speed 36 Howbeit they answered them not neither cast they a stone at them nor stopped the places where they lay hid 37 But said Let us die all in our †Gr. simplicity innocency heaven and earth shall testifie for us that you put us to death wrongfully 38 So they rose up against them in battel on the sabbath and they slew them with their wives and children and their cattel to the number of a thousand †Gr. souls of men people 39 Now when Mattathias and his friends understood hereof they mourned for them right sore 40 And one of them said to another If we all do as our brethren have done and fight not for our lives and laws against the heathen they will now quickly root us out of the earth 41 At that time therefore they decreed saying Whosoever shall come to make battel with us on the sabbath-day we will fight against him neither will we die all as our brethren that were murdered in the secret places 42 Then came there unto him a company of Assideans who were mighty men of Israel even all such as were voluntarily devoted unto the law 43 Also all they that fled for persecution joyned themselves unto them and were a stay unto them 44 So they joyned their forces and smote sinful men in their anger and wicked men in their wrath but the rest fled
