the_o immortality_n of_o our_o highpriest_n the_o son_n of_o god_n he_o be_v our_o priest_n for_o ever_o 1._o the_o mortality_n of_o the_o priest_n of_o old_a say_v the_o apostle_n in_o the_o text_n they_o be_v not_o suffer_v to_o continue_v by_o reason_n of_o death_n that_o word_n death_n concern_v all_o mankind_n how_o many_o of_o the_o child_n of_o adam_n son_n and_o daughter_n of_o adam_n since_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o world_n they_o be_v all_o dead_a but_o this_o present_a generation_n and_o a_o little_a time_n will_v bury_v all_o of_o we_o that_o doom_n which_o god_n denounce_v against_o adam_n in_o gen._n 3._o in_o the_o day_n that_o thou_o eat_v thereof_o thou_o shall_v die_v the_o death_n that_o reach_v all_o that_o come_v out_o of_o the_o loin_n of_o adam_n we_o bring_v sin_n into_o the_o world_n with_o we_o and_o sin_n bring_v death_n as_o you_o have_v it_o in_o rom._n 5._o that_o death_n come_v in_o by_o sin_n by_o one_o man_n sin_n enter_v into_o the_o world_n and_o death_n by_o sin_n and_o so_o death_n pass_v upon_o all_o man_n every_o one_o that_o be_v bear_v into_o the_o world_n be_v bear_v in_o sin_n every_o one_o that_o be_v bear_v into_o the_o world_n by_o ordinary_a generation_n and_o so_o can_v continue_v long_o in_o the_o world_n by_o reason_n of_o death_n indeed_o there_o be_v and_o ever_o have_v be_v many_o of_o the_o child_n of_o man_n that_o have_v have_v great_a privilege_n and_o dignity_n above_o other_o but_o none_o ever_o be_v exempt_v from_o death_n except_o some_o few_o as_o enoch_n and_o elijah_n some_o have_v be_v king_n and_o great_a man_n of_o the_o earth_n some_o have_v be_v make_v honourable_a prophet_n some_o apostle_n some_o minister_n have_v in_o their_o day_n be_v burn_v and_o shine_a light_n but_o all_o be_v dead_a they_o be_v not_o suffer_v to_o continue_v any_o of_o they_o by_o reason_n of_o death_n all_o be_v go_v the_o prophet_n do_v they_o live_v for_o ever_o and_o your_o father_n where_o be_v they_o king_n lord_n and_o potentate_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o mighty_a man_n death_n have_v lord_v it_o over_o they_o all_o they_o be_v not_o suffer_v to_o continue_v by_o reason_n of_o death_n therefore_o it_o say_v that_o because_o life_n be_v short_a therefore_o they_o will_v give_v up_o themselves_o to_o ease_v sloth_n and_o pleasure_n and_o make_v as_o much_o as_o they_o can_v of_o a_o short_a life_n these_o be_v the_o people_n in_o isa_n 22._o 13_o 14._o and_o behold_v joy_n and_o gladness_n slay_v ox_n and_o kill_a sheep_n eat_v flesh_n and_o drink_v wine_n let_v we_o eat_v and_o drink_v for_o to_o morrow_n we_o shall_v die_v and_o this_o thing_n be_v reveal_v in_o my_o ear_n by_o the_o lord_n of_o host_n sure_o this_o iniquity_n shall_v not_o be_v purge_v from_o you_o till_o you_o die_v office_n of_o a_o surety_n be_v and_o then_o why_o christ_n be_v say_v to_o be_v surety_n of_o a_o better_a covenant_n as_o he_o be_v the_o priest_n of_o god_n and_o confirm_v by_o his_o oath_n first_o for_o the_o surety_n you_o know_v he_o be_v a_o person_n that_o engage_v himself_o for_o another_o prov._n 6._o 1._o my_o son_n if_o thou_o be_v surety_n for_o a_o friend_n if_o thou_o have_v strike_v hand_n with_o a_o stranger_n etc._n etc._n how_o be_v that_o it_o may_v be_v a_o stranger_n he_o come_v and_o challenge_v a_o debt_n of_o your_o friend_n and_o your_o friend_n he_o carry_v it_o very_o friendly_a with_o you_o to_o have_v you_o engage_v with_o the_o stranger_n for_o his_o debt_n and_o strike_v hand_n with_o he_o and_o to_o become_v surety_n for_o your_o friend_n in_o this_o sense_n christ_n be_v call_v our_o surety_n because_o it_o be_v the_o office_n of_o the_o priest_n to_o stand_v between_o god_n and_o man_n and_o to_o offer_v up_o satisfaction_n by_o way_n of_o sacrifice_n either_o typical_a or_o real_a thus_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n in_o this_o respect_n be_v call_v our_o surety_n why_o because_o he_o undertake_v for_o we_o to_o god_n and_o for_o god_n to_o we_o again_o he_o undertake_v to_o satisfy_v the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o what_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n why_o the_o will_n of_o god_n be_v to_o fulfil_v all_o righteousness_n that_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n jesus_n christ_n as_o our_o surety_n have_v fulfil_v all_o righteousness_n rom._n 5._o 19_o for_o as_o by_o one_o man_n disobedience_n many_o be_v make_v sinner_n so_o by_o the_o obedience_n of_o one_o shall_v many_o be_v make_v righteous_a so_o 2_o cor._n 5._o 21._o for_o he_o have_v make_v himself_o to_o be_v sin_n for_o we_o that_o know_v no_o sin_n that_o we_o may_v be_v make_v the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n in_o he_o and_o thus_o as_o our_o surety_n he_o have_v fulfil_v all_o righteousness_n for_o we_o and_o then_o as_o the_o surety_n of_o the_o covenant_n so_o he_o do_v confirm_v all_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n in_o the_o covenant_n to_o we_o he_o engage_v for_o the_o promise_n hence_o you_o have_v that_o in_o 2_o cor._n 1._o 20._o for_o all_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n in_o he_o be_v yea_o and_o in_o he_o amen_o so_o that_o we_o look_v to_o our_o surety_n to_o fulfil_v all_o thing_n for_o we_o and_o we_o look_v to_o our_o surety_n that_o we_o have_v the_o covenant_n and_o promise_v make_v good_a to_o we_o for_o all_o the_o promise_n be_v in_o he_o yea_o and_o in_o he_o amen_o but_o say_v the_o apostle_n he_o be_v make_v a_o surety_n of_o a_o better_a covenant_n or_o a_o better_a testament_n for_o the_o word_n be_v render_v both_o way_n sometime_o a_o covenant_n sometime_o a_o testament_n but_o how_o be_v christ_n surety_n of_o a_o better_a covenant_n i_o answer_v not_o better_a in_o respect_n of_o the_o matter_n of_o it_o or_o the_o substance_n of_o it_o for_o god_n in_o that_o covenant_n do_v make_v himself_o over_o to_o his_o people_n to_o be_v their_o god_n and_o all_o believer_n be_v save_v by_o faith_n as_o we_o be_v it_o be_v not_o better_a in_o respect_n of_o the_o matter_n of_o it_o but_o better_a in_o a_o threefold_a respect_n 1._o better_o in_o respect_n of_o a_o clear_a and_o full_a manifestation_n to_o god_n in_o the_o covenant_n the_o covenant_n before_o we_o be_v under_o a_o veil_n therefore_o say_v the_o apostle_n eph._n 3._o 4_o 5._o whereby_o when_o you_o read_v you_o may_v understand_v the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o mystery_n of_o christ_n which_o in_o other_o age_n be_v not_o make_v know_v unto_o the_o son_n of_o man_n as_o it_o be_v now_o reveal_v 2._o better_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o confirmation_n of_o it_o heb._n 9_o 15_o 16._o for_o this_o cause_n speak_v of_o with_o the_o gospel_n and_o so_o be_v make_v a_o surety_n of_o a_o better_a covenant_n than_o the_o levitical_a priesthood_n to_o come_v to_o some_o application_n if_o this_o be_v so_o that_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n be_v make_v surety_n of_o a_o better_a testament_n then_o stand_v here_o and_o see_v the_o great_a and_o endless_a love_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n 1._o the_o greatness_n of_o his_o love_n for_o you_o know_v that_o it_o be_v a_o good_a evidence_n of_o a_o man_n love_n and_o kindness_n when_o he_o will_v be_v a_o surety_n for_o one_o that_o he_o think_v can_v pay_v the_o debt_n but_o if_o a_o man_n will_v be_v surety_n for_o one_o that_o be_v in_o debt_n and_o know_v that_o he_o must_v pay_v the_o debt_n if_o he_o be_v surety_n this_o be_v still_o great_a love_n but_o yet_o far_o if_o a_o man_n will_v be_v surety_n for_o a_o man_n that_o be_v condemn_v to_o die_v and_o engage_v his_o life_n for_o he_o this_o be_v love_n beyond_o all_o love_n this_o be_v the_o case_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n to_o take_v man_n nature_n suffer_v himself_o to_o be_v under_o the_o curse_n and_o suffer_v himself_o to_o be_v put_v to_o death_n oh_o the_o great_a mercy_n and_o unspeakable_a love_n and_o grace_n of_o christ_n great_a love_n have_v no_o man_n than_o this_o that_o a_o man_n lie_v down_o his_o life_n for_o his_o friend_n but_o than_o second_o here_o you_o may_v see_v his_o endless_a love_n because_o he_o undertake_v to_o be_v our_o surety_n for_o ever_o you_o have_v many_o a_o man_n in_o a_o sit_v of_o love_n or_o kindness_n will_v be_v draw_v in_o to_o be_v a_o surety_n but_o will_v repent_v of_o it_o and_o will_v get_v out_o of_o it_o as_o soon_o as_o he_o can_v and_o will_v never_o come_v into_o it_o again_o but_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n he_o engage_v to_o be_v a_o everlasting_a surety_n for_o we_o what_o then_o remain_v but_o that_o every_o one_o that_o understand_v these_o thing_n shall_v look_v to_o jesus_n christ_n here_o be_v a_o special_a prop_n for_o our_o faith_n as_o you_o have_v it_o in_o the_o verse_n before_o christ_n bring_v in_o a_o better_a hope_n than_o be_v before_o he_o be_v a_o surety_n of_o a_o better_a covenant_n therefore_o when_o fear_n arise_v in_o you_o about_o your_o sin_n remember_v that_o you_o have_v a_o
and_o man_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o he_o to_o be_v hold_v of_o death_n three_o christ_n death_n be_v but_o to_o do_v the_o great_a part_n of_o his_o priestly_a office_n and_o to_o pass_v from_o one_o to_o another_o so_o the_o word_n signify_v and_o therefore_o our_o translator_n put_v it_o so_o in_o your_o margin_n he_o have_v a_o priesthood_n that_o pass_v not_o from_o one_o person_n to_o another_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n his_o great_a highpriesthood_n pass_v not_o from_o one_o to_o another_o and_o there_o be_v these_o three_o reason_n for_o it_o first_o because_o he_o be_v all-sufficient_a to_o finish_v the_o work_n of_o our_o redemption_n he_o be_v almighty_a and_o therefore_o in_o psal_n 89._o which_o be_v a_o prophecy_n of_o christ_n under_o david_n as_o his_o type_n in_o the_o 19_o ver_fw-la then_o thou_o speak_v in_o vision_n to_o the_o holy_a one_o and_o say_v i_o have_v lay_v help_n upon_o one_o that_o be_v mighty_a i_o have_v exalt_v our_o hope_n the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o that_o he_o be_v our_o hope_n of_o glory_n and_o oh_o what_o a_o mercy_n and_o blessing_n it_o be_v that_o our_o hope_n be_v not_o in_o man_n who_o breath_n be_v in_o his_o nostril_n but_o in_o the_o eternal_a son_n of_o god_n in_o he_o who_o continue_v for_o ever_o look_v into_o the_o world_n and_o there_o you_o will_v find_v abundance_n that_o live_v in_o their_o worldly_a hope_n but_o where_o be_v their_o hope_n build_v but_o common_o upon_o man_n who_o breath_n be_v in_o their_o nostril_n when_o their_o friend_n die_v their_o hope_n die_v but_o
