It is much for you Ye take too much upon you seeing all the congregation are holy everyone of them and the LORD is among them wherefore then lift you up your selves above the congregation of the LORD 4 And when Moses heard it he fell upon his face 5 And he spake unto Korah and unto all his company saying Even to morrow the LORD will shew who are his and who is holy and will cause him to come near unto him even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to come near unto him 6 This do take you censers Korah and all his company 7 And put fire therein and put incense in them before the LORD to morrow and it shall be that the man whom the LORD doth choose he shall be holy ye take too much upon you ye sons of Levi. 8 And Moses said unto Korah Hear I pray you ye sons of Levi 9 Seemeth it but a small thing unto you that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them 10 And he hath brought thee near to him and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee and seek ye the priesthood also 11 For which cause both thou and all thy company are gathered together against the LORD and what is Aaron that ye murmure against him 12 ¶ And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab which said We will not come up 13 Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land that floweth with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness except thou make thy self altogether a prince over us 14 Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land that floweth with milk and honey or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards wilt thou †Heb. here out put out the eyes of these men we will not come up 15 And Moses was very wroth and said unto the LORD * Gen. 4 4. Respect not thou their offering I have not taken one ass from them neither have I hurt one of them 16 And Moses said unto Korah Be thou and all thy company before the LORD thou and they and Aaron to morrow 17 And take every man his censer and put incense in them and bring ye before the LORD every man his censer two hundred and fifty censers thou also and Aaron each of you his censer 18 And they took every man his censer and put fire in them and said incense thereon and stood in the door of the tabernacle of the congregation with Moses and Aaron 19 And Korah gathered all the congregation against them unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the congregation 20 And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron saying 21 Separate your selves from among this congregation that I may consume them in a moment 22 And they fell upon their faces and said O God the God of the spirits of all flesh shall one man sin and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation 23 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 24 Speak unto the congregation saying Get you up from about the taberlacle of Korah Dathan and Abiram 25 And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram and the elders of Israel followed him 26 And he spake unto the congregation saying Depart I pray you from the tents of these wicked men and touch nothing of theirs lest ye be consumed in all their sins 27 So they gat up from the tabernacle of Korah Dathan and Abiram on every side and Dathan and Abiram came out and stood in the door of their tents and their wives and their sons and their little children 28 And Moses said Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works for I have not done them of mine own minde 29 If these men die †Heb. as every man dieth the common death of all men or if they be visited after the visitation of all men then
of the Shimites these are the families of the Gershonites 22 Those that were numbred of them according to the number of all the males from a moneth old and upward even those that were numbred of them were seven thousand and five hundred 23 The families of the Gershonites shall pitch behinde the tabernacle west-ward 24 And the chief of the house of the father of the Gershonites shall be Eliasaph the son of Lael 25 And the charge of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation shall be the tabernacle and the tent the covering thereof and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation 26 And the hangings of the court and the curtain for the door of the court which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about and the cords of it for all the service thereof 27 ¶ And of Kohath was the family of the Amramites and the family of the Izeharites and the family of the Hebronites and the family of the Uzzielites these are the families of the Kohathites 28 In the number of all the males from a moneth old and uâ—ward were eight thousand six hundred keeping the charge of the sanctâ—ary 29 The families of the sons of Kohath shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle south-ward 30 And the chief of the house of the father of the families of the Kohathites shall be Elizaphan the son of Uzziel 31 And their charge shall be the ark and the table and the candlestick and the altars and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith they minister and the hanging and all the service thereof 32 And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be chief over the chief of the Levites and have the oversight of them that keep the charge of the sanctuary 33 ¶ Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites and the family of the Mushites these are the families of Merari 34 And those that were numbred of them according to the number of all the males from a moneth old and upward were six thousand and two hundred 35 And the chief of the house of the father of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail these shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle north-ward 36 And †Heb. the office of the charge under the custody and charge of the sons of Merari shall be the boards of the tabernacle and the bars thereof and the pillars thereof and the sockets thereof and all the vessels thereof and all that serveth thereto 37 And the pillars of the court round about and their sockets and their pins and their cords 38 ¶ But those that encamp before the tabernacle toward the east even before the tabernacle of the congregation east-ward shall be Moses and Aaron and his sons keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Israel and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death 39 All that were numbred of the Levites which Moses and Aaron numbred at the commandment of the LORD throughout their families all the males from a moneth old and upward were twenty and two thousand 40 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Number all the first-born of the males of the children of Israel from a moneth old and upward and take the number of their names 41 And thou shalt take the Levites for me I am the LORD in stead of all the first-born among the children of Israel and the cattel of the Levites instead of all the firstlings among the cattel of the children of Israel 42 And Moses numbred as the LORD commanded him all the first-born among the children of Israel 43 And all the first-born males by the number of names from a moneth old and upward of those that were numbred of them were twenty and two thousand two hundred and threescore and thirteen 44 And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 45 Take the Levites in stead of all the first-born among the children of Israel and the cattel of the Levites in stead of their cattel and the Levites shall be mine I am the LORD 46 And for those that are to be redeemed of the two hundred and threescore and thirteen of the first-born of the children of Israel which are more then the Levites 47 Thou shalt even take five shekels a piece by the poll after the shekel of the sanctuary shalt thou take them * Exod. 30.13 Lev. 27.25 Ch. 18.16 Ezek. 45.12 the shekel is twenty gerahs 48 And thou shalt give the money wherewith the odd number of them is to be redeemed unto Aaron and to his sons 49 And Moses took the redemption-money of them that were over and above them that were redeemed by the Levites 50 Of the first-born of the children of Israel took he the money a thousand three hundred and threescore and five shekels after the shekel of the sanctuary 51 And Moses gave the money of them that were redeemed unto Aaron and to his sons according to the word of the LORD as the LORD commanded Moses CHAP. Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar. 2 And the LORD appeared unto him and said Go not down into Egypt dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of 3 Sojourn in this land and I will be with thee and will bless thee for unto thee and unto thy seed * Chap. 13.15 15.18 I will give all these countreys and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father 4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven and will give unto thy seed all these countreys and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be * Chap. 12.3 22.18 blessed 5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge my commandments my statutes and my laws 6 ¶ And Isaac dwelt in Gerar. 7 And the men of the place asked him of his wife and he said She in my sister for he feared to say She is my wife lest said he the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah because she was â—air to look upon 8 And it came to pass when he had been there a long time that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window and saw and behold Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife 9 And Abimelech called Isaac and said Behold of a surety she is thy wife and how saidst thou She is my sister And Isaac said unto him Because I said Lest I die for her 10 And Abimelech said What is this thou hast done unto us one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us 11 And Abimelech charged all his people saying He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death 12 Then Isaac sowed in that land and †Heb. found received in the same year an hundred fold and the LORD blessed him 13 And the man waxed great and †Heb. went going went forward and grew until he became very great 14 For he had possession of flocks and possession of herds and great store of ‖ Or husbandry servants And the Philistines envied him 15 For all the wells which his fathers servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father the Philistines had stopped them and filled them with earth 16 And Abimelech said unto Isaac Go from us for thou art much mightier then we 17 ¶ And Isaac departed thence and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar and dwelt there 18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them 19 And Isaacs servants digged in the valley and found there a well of †Heb. livng springing water 20 And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaacs herdmen saying The water is ours and he called the name of the well ‖ That is contention Esek because they strove with him 21 And they digged another well and strove for that also and he called the name of it ‖ That is â—â—tred Sitnah 22 And he removed from thence and digged another well and for that they strove not and he called the name of it ‖ That is room Rehoboth and he said For now the LORD hath made room for us and we shall be fruitful in the land 23 And he went up from thence to Beer-sheba 24 And the LORD appeared unto him the same night and said I am the God of Abraham thy father fear not for I am with thee and will bless thee and multiply thy seed for my servant Abrahams sake 25 And he builded an altar there and called upon the name of the LORD and pitched his tent there there Isaacs servants digged a well 26 ¶ Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar and Ahuzzath one of his friends and Phichol the chief captain of his army 27 And Isaac said unto them Wherefore come ye to me seeing ye hate me and have sent me away from you 28 And they said †Heb. Seeing we saw We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee and we said Let there be now an oath betwixt us even betwixt us and thee and let us make a covenant with thee 29 †Heb. if thou shalt c. turned himself and went out from Pharaoh 7 And Pharaohs servants said unto him How long shall this man be a snare unto us Let the men go that they may serve the LORD their God Knowest thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed 8 And Moses and Aaron were brought again unto Pharaoh and he said unto them Go serve the LORD your God but †Heb. who and who c. who are they that shall go 9 And Moses said We will go with our young and with our old with our sons and with our daughters with our flocks and with our herds will we go for we must hold a feast unto the LORD 10 And he said unto them Let the LORD be so with you as I will let you go and your little ones look to it for evil is before you 11 Not so go now ye that are men and serve the LORD for that you did desire And they were driven out from Pharaohs presence 12 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Stretch out thine hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts that they may come up upon the land of Egypt and eat every herb of the land even all that the hail hath left 13 And Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt and the LORD brought an east-wind upon the land all that day and all that night and when it was morning the east-wind brought the locusts 14 And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt and rested in all the coasts of Egypt very grievous were they before them there were no such locusts as they neither after them shall be such 15 For they covered the face of the whole earth so that the land was darkned and they did eat every herb of the land and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left and there remained not any green thing in the trees or in the herbs of the field through all the land of Egypt 16 ¶ Then Pharaoh †Heb. hastned to call called for Moses and Aaron in haste and he he said I have sinned against the LORD your God and against you 17 Now therefore forgive I pray thee my sin onely this once and intreat the LORD your God that he may take away from me this death onely 18 And he went out from Pharaoh and intreated the LORD 19 And the LORD turned a mighty strong west-wind which took away the locusts and †Heb. fastned cast them into the Red sea there remained not one locust in all the coasts of Egypt 20 But the LORD hardned Pharaohs heart so that he would not let the children of Israel go 21 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Stretch out thine hand toward heaven that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt †Heb. that one may feel darkness even darkness which may be felt 22 And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days 23 They saw not one another neither rose any from his place for three days * Wisd 18.1 but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings 24 ¶ And Pharaoh called unto Moses and said Go ye serve the LORD onely let your flocks and your herds be stayed let your little ones also go with you 25 And Moses said Thou must give †Heb. into our hands us also sacrifices and burnt-offerings that we may sacrifice unto the LORD our God 26 Our cattel also shall go with us there shall not an hoof be left behinde for thereof must we take to serve the LORD our God and we know not with what we must serve the LORD until we come thither 27 ¶ But the LORD hardned Pharaohs heart and he would not let them go 28 And Pharaoh said unto him Get thee from me take heed to thy self see my face no more for in that day thou seest my face thou shalt die 29 And Moses said Thou hast spoken well I will see thy face again no more CHAP. XI 1 Gods message to the Israelites to borrow jewels of their neighbours 4 Moses threatneth Pharaoh with the death of the first-born ANd the LORD said unto Moses Yet will I bring one plague more upon Pharaph and upon Egypt afterwards he will let you go hence when he shall let you go he shall surely thrust you out hence altogether 2 Speak now in the ears of the people and let every man borrow of his neighbour and every woman of her neighbour * Chap. â— 22 and 12 35. jewels of silver and jewels of gold 3 And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians Moreover the man * Eccluâ— 45.1 Moses was very great in the land of Egypt in the sight of Pharaohs servants and in the sight of the people 4 And Moses said Thus saith the LORD * Chap. 12.29 About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt 5 And all the first-born in the land of Egypt shall die from the first-born of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne even unto the first-born of the maid servant that is behinde the mill and all the first-born of beasts 6 And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt such as there was none like it nor shall be like it any more 7 But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue against man or beast that ye may know how that the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel 8 And all these thy servants shall come down unto me and bow down themselves unto me saying Get thee out and all the people †Heb. that is at thy feet that follow thee and after that I will go out and he went out from Pharaoh in †Heb. heat of anger a great anger 9 And the LORD said unto Moses Pharaoh shall not hearken unto you that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt 10 And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh and the LORD hardned Pharaohs heart so that he would not let the children of Israel go out of his land CHAP. XII 1 The beginning of the year is changed 3 The pass-over is instituted 11 The rice of the pass-over 15Vnleavened bread 29 The first-born are slain 31 The Israelites are driven out of the land 37 They come to Succoth 43 The ordinance of the pass-over ANd the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt saying 2 This moneth shall be unto you the beginning of moneths it shall be the first moneth of the year to you 3 ¶ Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel saying In the tenth day of this moneth they shall take to them every man a ‖ Or kid lamb according to the house of their fathers a lamb for an house 4 And if the hoâ—â—hold be too little for the lamb let him his neighbour next unto his

shall first set forth 10 ¶ On the south-side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their armies and the captain of the children of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur 11 And his host and those that were numbred thereof were fourty and six thousand and five hundred 12 And those which pitch by him shall be the tribe of Simâ—on and the captain of the children of Simeon shall be Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai 13 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fifty and â—ine thousand and three hundred 14 Then the tribe of Gad and the captain of the sons of Gad shall be Eliasaph the son of Reuel 15 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty and five thousand and six hundred and fifty 16 All that were numbred in the camp of Reuben were an hundred thousand and fifty and one thousand and four hundred and fifty throughout their armies and they shall set forth in the second rank 17 ¶ Then the tabernacle of the congregation shall set forward with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camp as they encamp so shall they set forward every man in his place by their standards 18 ¶ On the west-side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their armies and the captain of the sons of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud 19 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty thousand and five hundred 20 And by him shall be the tribe of Manasseh and the captain of the children of Manasseh shall be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur 21 And his host and those that were numbred of them were thirty and two thousand and two hundred 22 Then the tribe of Benjamin and the captain of the sons of Benjamin shall be Abidan the son of Gideoni 23 And his host and those that were numbred of them were thirty and five thousand and four hundred 24 All that were numbred of the camp of Ephraim were an hundred thousand and eight thousand and an hundred throughout their armies and they shall go forward in the third rank 25 ¶ The standard of the camp of Dan shall be on the north-side by their armies and the captain of the children of Dan shall be Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai 26 And his host and those that were numbred of them were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred 27 And those that encamp by him shall be the tribe of Asher and the captain of the children of Asher shall be Pagiel the son of Ocran 28 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty and one thousand and five hundred 29 Then the tribe of Naphtali and the captain of the children of Naphtali shall be Ahira the son of Enan 30 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fifty and three thousand and four hundred 31 All they that were numbred in the camp of Dan were an hundred thousand and fifty and seven thousand and six hundred they shall go hindmost with their standards 32 ¶ These are those which were numbred of the children of Israel by the house of their fathers all those that were numbred of the camps throughout their hosts were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty 33 But the Levites were not numbred among the children of Israel as the LORD commanded Moses 34 And the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses so they pitched by their standards and so they set forward every one after their families according to the house of their fathers CHAP. XXXV 1 Eight and fourty cities for the Levites with their suburâ—s and measure thereof 6 Six of them are to be cities of refuge 9 The laws of murder 31 No satisfaction for murder ANd the LORD spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho saying 2 * Josh 21. â— Command the children of Israel that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in and ye shall give also unto the Levites suburbs for the cities round about them 3 And the cities shall they have to dwell in and the suburbs of them shall be for their cattel and for their goods and for all their beasts 4 And the suburbs of the cities which ye shall give unto the Levites shall reach from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits round about 5 And ye shall measure from the land of Canaan which shall be cities of refuge 15 These six cities shall be a refuge both for the children of Israel and for the stranger and for the sojourner among them that every one that killeth any person unawares may flee thither 16 * Exod. 21.14 And if he smite him with an instrument of iron so that he die he is a murderer the murderer shall surely be put to death 17 And if he smite him †Heb. with a stone of the band with throwing a stone wherewith he may die and he die he is a murderer the murderer shall surely be put to death 18 Or if he smite him with an hand-weapon of wood wherewith he may die and he die he is a murderer the murderer shall surely be put to death 19 The revenger of bloud himself shall slay the murderer when he meeteth him he shall slay him 20 But * with any stone wherewith a man may die seeing him not and cast it upon him that he die and was not his enemy neither sought his harm 24 Then the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the revenger of bloud according to these judgements 25 And the congregation shall deliver the slayer out of the hand of the revenger of bloud and the congregation shall restore him to the city of his refuge wither he was fled and he shall abide in it unto the death of the high priest which was anointed with the holy oyl 26 But if the slayer shall at any time come without the border of the city of his refuge whether he was fled 27 And the revenger of bloud finde him without the borders of the city of his refuge and the revenger of bloud kill the slayer †Heb. no bloud shall be to him he shall not be guilty of bloud 28 Because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest but after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of his possession 29 So these things shall be for a statute of judgement unto you throughout your generations in all your dwellings 30 Whoso killeth any person the murderer shall be put to death by the * XXI 1 The expiation of an uncertain murder 10 The usage of a captive taken to wife 15 The first-born is not to be â—â—inherited upon private affection 18 A stubborn son is to be stoned to death 22 The maâ—â—factor must not hang all night on a tree IF one be found slain in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it lying in the field it be not known who hath slain him 2 Then thy elders and thy judges shall come forth and they shall measure unto the cities which are found about him that is slain 3 And it shall be that the city which is next unto the slain man even the elders of that city shall take an heifer which hath not been wrought with and which hath not drawn in the yoke 4 And the elders of that city shall bring down the heifer unto a rough valley which is neither eared nor sown and shall strike off the the heifers neck there in the valley 5 And the priests the sons of Levi shall come near for them the LORD thy God hath chosen to minister unto him and to bless in the name of the LORD and by their †Heb. mouth word shall every controversie and every stroke be tried 6 And all the elders of that city that are next unto the slain man shall wash their hands over the heifer that is beheaded in the valley 7 And they shall answer and say Our hands have not shed this bloud neither have our eyes seen it 8 Be merciful O LORD unto thy people Israel whom thou hast redeemed and lay not innocent bloud †Heb. in the midst unto thy people of Israels charge And the bloud shall be forgiven them 9 So shalt thou put away the guilt of innocent bloud from among you when thou shalt do that which is right in the sight of the LORD 10 ¶ When thou goest forth to war against thine enemies and the LORD thy God hath delivered them into thine hands and thou hast taken them captive 11 And seed among the captives a beautiful woman and hast a desire unto her that thou wouldest have her to thy wife 12 Then thou shalt bring her home to thine house and she shall shave her head and ‖ Or suffer to gâ—â—n †Heb. make or dress pare her nails 13 And she shall put the raiment of her captivity from off her and shâ—â—â— remain in thine house and bewail her father and her mother a full moneth and after that thou shalt go in unto her and be her husband and she shall be thy wise 14 And it shall be if thou have no delight in her then thou shalt let her

CXVIII 1 An exhortation to praise God for his mercy 5 The psalmist by his experience sheweth how good it is to trust in God 19Vnder the type of the psalmist the coming of Christ in his kingdom is expressed O * 1 Chr. 16.8 Ps 106.1 107.1 136.1 Give thanks unto the LORD for he is good because his mercy endureth for ever 2 Let Israel now say that his mercy endureth for ever 3 Let the house of Aaron now say that his mercy endureth for ever 4 Let them now that fear the LORD say that his mercy endureth for ever 5 I called upon the LORD †Heb. out of distress in distress the LORD answered me and set me in a large place 6 * Ps 56.4 11. darkness and his name shall be covered with darkness 5 Moreover he hath not seen the sun nor known any thing this hath more rest then the other 6 ¶ Yea though he live a thousand years twice told yet hath he seen no good do not all go to one place 7 All the labour of man is for his mouth and yet the †Heb. soul appetite is not filled 8 For what hath the wise more then the fool what hath the poor that knoweth to walk before the living 9 ¶ Better is the sight of the eyes †Heb. then the walking of the soul then the wandring of the desire this is also vanity and vexatioâ— of spirit 10 That which hath been is named already and it is known that it is man neither may he contend with him that is mightier then he 11 ¶ Seeing there be many things that increase vanity what is man the better 12 For who knoweth what is good for man in this life †Heb. the number of the days of the life of his vanity all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as * Ps 144.4 a shadow for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun CHAP. VII 1 Remedies against vanity are a good name 2 mortification 7 patients 11 wisdom 23 The difficulty of wisdom A * Prov. 25.30 22.1 Good name is better then precious ointment and the day of death then the day of ones birth 2 ¶ It is better to go to the house of mourning then to go to the house of feasting for that is the end of all men and the living will lay it to his heart 3 ‖ Or Anger Sorrow is better then laughter for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better 4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth 5 * Prov. 13.18 15.31.32 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise then for a man to hear the song of fools 6 For as the †Heb. sound crackling of thorns under a pot so is the laughter of the fool this also is vanity 7 ¶ Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad * Deut. 16.19 and a gift destroyeth the heart 8 Better is the end of a thing then the beginning thereof and the patient in spirit is better then the proud in spirit 9 * Prov. 14.17 16.32 Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry for anger resteth in the bosom of fools 10 Say not thou What is the cause that the former days were better then these for thou dost not enquire †Heb. out of wisdom wisely concerning this 11 ¶ Wisdom ‖ Or as good at an inheritance yea better too is good with an inheritance and by it there is profit to them that see the sun 12 For wisdom is a †Heb. shadow defence and money is a defence but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom giveth life to them that have it 13 Consider the work of God for * Ch. 1.15 who can make that straight which he hath made crooked 14 In the day of prosperity be joyful but in the day of adversity consider God also hath †Heb. made set the one over against the other to the end that man should finde nothing after him 15 All things have I seen in the days of my vanity there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness 16 Be not righteous overmuch neither make thyself over-wise why shouldest thou †Heb. be desolate destroy thy self 17 Be not overmuch wicked neither be thou foolish why shouldest thou die †Heb. not in thy time before thy time 18 It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this yea also from this withdraw not thine hand for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all 19 * Prov. 21.22 24.5 Chap. 9.16 Wisdom strengthneth the wise more then ten mighty men which are in the city 20 * 1 King 8 46. XI 1 Directions for charity 7 Death in life 9 and the day of judgement in the days of youth are to be thought on CAst thy bread †Heb. upon the face of the waters upon the waters for thou shalt finde it after * Deu. 15.10 Pr. 19.17 Mat. 10.42 many days 2 Give a portion to seven and also to eight for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth 3 If the clouds be full of rain they empty themselves upon the earth and if the tree fall toward the south or toward the north in the place where the tree falleth there it shall be 4 He that observeth the wind shall not sowe and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap 5 As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with childe even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all 6 In the morning sowe thy seed and in the evening withhold not thine hand for thou knowest not whether †Heb. shall be right shall prosper either this or that or whether they both shall be alike good 7 ¶ Truly the light is sweet and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun 8 But if a man live many years and rejoyce in them all yet let him remember the days of darkness for they shall be many All that cometh is vanity 9 ¶ Rejoyce O young man in thy youth and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth and walk in the ways of thy heart and in the sight of thine eyes but know thou that for all these things God will bring thee into judgement 10 Therefore remove ‖ Or anger sorrow from thy heart and put away evil from thy flesh for childhood and youth are vanity CHAP. XII 1 The Creatour is to be remembred in due time 8 The preachers care to edifie 13 The fear of God is the chief antidote of vanity * Pr. 22.6 REmember now thy Creatour in the days of thy youth while the evil days come not nor the years draw nigh when thou shalt say I have no pleasure in them 2 While the sun or the light or the moon or the stars be not darkned not the clouds return after the rain 3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble and the strong men shall bow themselves and ‖ Or the grinders fail because they grinde little the grinders cease because they are few and those that look out of the windows be darkned 4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets when the sound of the grinding is low and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird and all the daughters of musick shall be brought sow 5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high and fears shall be in the way and the almond-tree shall flourish and the grashopper shall be a burden and desire shall fail because man goeth to his long home and the mourners go about the streets 6 Or ever the â—ilver cord be loosed or the golden bowl be broken or the pitcher be broken at the fountain or the wheel broken at the cistern 7 * Gen. 3.19 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it 8 ¶ * Ch. 1.2 Vanity of vanities saith the preacher all is vanity 9 And ‖ Or the more wise the preacher was c. moreover because the preacher was wise he still taught the people knowledge yea he gave good heed and sought out and * 1 Kin. 4.32 set in order many proverbs 10 The preacher sought to finde out †Heb. words of delight acceptable words and that which was written was upright even words of truth 11 The words of the wise are as goads and as nails fastned by the masters of assemblies which are given from one shepherd 12 And further by these my son be admonished of making many books there is no end and much ‖ Or reading study is a weariness of the flesh 13 ¶ ‖ Or The end of the matter even all that hath-been heard is Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter Fear God and keep his commandments for this is the whole duty of man 14 For * Ro. 2.16 14.20 2 Cor. â— 10 God shall bring every work into judgement with every secret thing whether it be good or whether it be evil ¶ The SONG of SOLOMON CHAP. Now Daniel had commanded his servants to bring ashes and those they strewed throughout all the temple in the presence of the king alone then went they out and shut the door and sealed it with the kings signet and so departed 15 Now in the night came the priests with their wives and children as they were wont to do and did eat and drink up all 16 In the morning betime the king arose and Daniel with him 17 And the king said Daniel are the seals whole And he said Yea O king they be whole 18 And assoon as he had opened the door the king looked upon the table and cried with a loud voice Great art thou O Bel and with thee is no deceit at all 19 Then laughed Daniel and held the king that he should not go in and said Behold now the pavement and mark well whose footsteps are these 20 And the king said I see the footsteps of men women and children And then the king was angry 21 And took the priests with their wives and children who shewed him the privy doors where they came in and consumed such things as were upon the table 22 Therefore the king slew them and delivered Bel into Daniels power who destroyed him and his temple 23 ‖ Some add this title Of the dragon And in that same place there was a great dragon which they of Babylon worshipped 24 And the king said unto Daniel Wilt thou also say that this is of brass so he liveth he eateth and drinketh thou canst not say that he is no living god therefore worship him 25 Then said Daniel unto the king I will worship the Lord my God for he is the living God 26 But give me leave O king and I shall slay this dragon without sword or staff The king said I give thee leave 27 Then Daniel took pitch and fat and hair and did seethe them together and made lumps thereof this he put in the dragons mouth and so the dragon burst in sunder and Daniel said ‖ Or Behold what you worship Lo These are the gods you worship 28 When they of Babylon heard that they took great indignation and conspired against the king saying The king is become a Jew and he hath destroyed Bel he hath slain the dragon and put the priests to death 29 So they came to the king and said Deliver us Daniel or else we will destroy thee and thine house 30 Now when the king saw that they pressed him sore being constrained he * Dan 6.16 delivered Daniel unto them 31 Who cast him into the lions den where he was six days 32 And in the den there were seven lions and they had given them every day ‖ Or two slaves two carcases and two sheep which then were not given to them to the intent they might devour Daniel 33 Now there was in Jewry a prophet called Habbacuc who had ‖ Or sod made pottage and had broken bread in a bowl and was going into the field for to bring it to the reapers 34 But the angel of the Lord said unto Habbacuc Go
of the shew-bread and the pouring vessels and the vials and the censers of gold and the veil and the crowns and the golden ornaments that were before the temple ‖ Or he pilled all things all which he pulled off 23 He took also the silver and the gold and the †Gr. desirable precious vessels also he took the hidden treasures which he found 24 And when he had taken all away he went into his own land having made a great massacre and spoken very proudly 25 Therefore there was great mourning in Israel in every place where they were 26 So that the princes and elders mourned the virgins and young men were made feeble and the beauty of women was changed 27 Every bridegroom took up lamentation and she that sat in the marriage-chamber was in heaviness 28 The land also was moved for the inhabitants thereof and all the house of Jacob was covered with confusion 29 And after two years fully expired the king sent his chief collectour of tribute unto the cities of Juda who came unto Jerusalem with a great multitude 30 And spake peaceable words unto them but all was deceit for when they had given him credence he fell suddenly upon the city and smote it very sore and destroyed much people of Israel 31 And when he had taken the spoils of the city he set it on fire and pulled down the houses and walls thereof on every side 32 But the women and children took they captive and possessed the cattel 33 Then builded they the city of David with a great and strong wall and with mighty towres and made it a strong hold for them 34 And they put therein a sinful nation wicked men and fortified themselves therein 35 They stored it also with armour and victuals and when they had gathered together the spoils of Jerusalem they laid them up there and so they became a sore snare 36 For it was a place to lie in wait against the sanctuary and an evil adversary to Israel 37 Thus they shed innocent bloud on every side of the sanctuary and defiled it 38 Insomuch that the inhabitants of Jerusalem fled because of them whereupon the city was made an habitation of strangers and became strange to those that were born in her and her own children left her 39 Her sanctuary was laid waste like a wilderness her feasts were turned into mourning her sabbaths into reproach her honour into contempt 40 As had been her glory so was her dishonour increased and her excellency was turned into mourning 41 Moreover king Antiochus wrote to his whole kingdom that all should be one people 42 And every one should leave his laws so all the heathen agreed according to the commandment of the king 43 Yea many also of the Israelites consented to his religion and sacrificed unto idols and profaned the sabbath 44 For the king had sent letters by messengers unto Jerusalem and the cities of Juda that they should follow ‖ Or the laws and rites of the strangers of the land the strange laws of the land 45 And forbid burnt-offerings and sacrifice and drink-offerings in the temple and that they should profane the sabbaths and festival days 46 And pollute the sanctuary and holy people 47 Set up altars and groves and chappels of idols and sacrifice swines flesh and unclean beasts 48 That they should also leave their children uncircumcised and make their souls abominable with all manner of uncleanness and profanation 49 To the end they might forget the law and change all the ordinances 50 And whosoever would not do according to the commandment of the king he said he should die 51 In the self-same manner wrote he to his whole kingdom and appointed overseers over all the people commanding the cities of Juda to sacrifice city by city 52 Then many of the people were gathered unto them to wit every one that forsook the law and so they committed evils in the land 53 ‖ Or And they made Israel hide themselves in holes in every place of succour And drove the Israelites into secret places even wheresoever they could flee for succour 54 Now the fifteenth day of the moneth Casleu in the hundred fourty and fifth year they set up the abomination of desolation upon the altar and builded idol-altars throughout the cities of Juda on every side 55 And burnt incense at the doors of their houses and in the streets 56 And when they had rent in pieces the books of the law which they found they burnt them with fire 57 And wheresoever was found with any the book of the testament or if any consented to the law †Gr. the kings commandment put him to death the kings commandment was that they should put him to death 58 Thus did they by their authority unto the Israelites every moneth to as many as were found in the cities 59 Now the five and twentieth day of the moneth they did sacrifice upon the idol-altar which was upon the altar of God 60 At which time according to the commandment they put to death certain women †Gr. that had circumcised their children that had caused their children to be circumcised 61 And they hanged the infants about their necks and rifled their houses and slew them that had circumcised them 62 Howbeit many in Israel were fully resolved and confirmed in themselves not to eat any unclean thing 63 Wherefore they chose rather to die that they might not be defiled with meats and that they might not profane the holy covenant so then they died 64 And there was very great wrath upon Israel CHAP. II. 6 Mattathias lamenteth the case of Jerusalem 24 He slayeth a Jew that did sacrifice to idols in his presence and the kings messenger also 34 He and his are assailed on the sabbath and make no resistance 50 He dieth and instrutieth his sons 66 and maketh their brother Judas Maccabeus general IN those days ‖ Or Mattathias the son of John c. arose from Jerusalem or out of Jerusalem arose Mattathias the son of John the son of Simeon a priest of the sons of Joarib from Jerusalem and dwelt in Modin 2 And he had five sons Joannan ‖ Or who was called and so aflterward in the rest called ‖ Gaddis Caddis 3 Simon called Thassi 4 Judas who was called Maccabeus 5 Eleazar called ‖ Or Avaron or Abaron Avaran and Jonathan whose surname was Apphus 6 And when he saw the blasphemies that were committed in Juda and Jerusalem 7 He said Wo is me wherefore was I born to see this misery of my people and of the holy city and to dwell there when it was delivered into the hand of the enemy and the sanctuary into the hand of strangers 8 Her temple is become as a man without glory 9 Her glorious vessels are carried away into captivity her infants are slain in the streets her young men with the sword of the enemy 10 What nation
and with profane hands pulling down the things that were dedicated by other kings to the augmentation and glory and honour of the place he gave them away 17 And so haughty was Antiochus in minde that he considered not that the Lord was angry for a while for the sins of them that dwelt in the city and therefore his eye was not upon the place 18 For had they not been formerly wrapped in many sins this man assoon as he had come had forthwith been scourged and put back from his presumption as Heliodorus was whom Seleucus the king sent to view the treasury 19 Nevertheless God did not choose the people for the places sake but the place for the peoples sake 20 And therefore the place it self that was partaker with them of the adversity that hapned to the nation did afterward communicate in the benefits sent from the Lord and as it was forsaken in the wrath of the Almighty so again the great Lord being reconciled it was set up with all glory 21 So when Antiochus had carried out of the temple a thousand and eight hundred talents he departed in all haste unto Antiochia weening in his pride to make the land navigable and the sea passable by foot such was the haughtiness of his minde 22 And he left governours to vâ—x the nation at Jerusalem Philip for his countrey a Phrygian and for manners more barbarous then he that set him there 23 And at Garizim Andronicus and besides Menelaus who worse then all the rest bare an heavy hand over the citizens having a malicious minde against his countreymen the Jews 24 He sent also that detestable ring-leader Apollonius with an army of two twenty thousand commanding him to slay all those that were in their best age and to sell the women and the younger sort 25 Who coming to Jerusalem and pretending pâ—â—â—â— dâ—â—â—orbear till the holy-day of the sabbath when taking the Jews keeping holy-day he commanded his men to arm themselves 26 And so he slew all them that were gone to the celebrating of the sabbath and running through the city with weapons â—lâ—w great multitudes 27 But Judas Maccabeus †Gr who was the tenth with nine others or thereabout withdrew himself into the wilderness and lived in the mountains after the manner of beasts with his company who fed on herbs continually lest they should be partakers of the pollution CHAP. VI. 1 The Jews are compelled to leave the law of God 4 The temple is defiled 8 Cruelty upon the people and the nomâ— 12 〈◊〉 exhorâ—â— ion 〈◊〉 bear affliction by the example of the valiaâ—â—â—ouâ—aâ—e of E. 〈◊〉 cruelly tâ—rtured NOt long after this the king sent an old man of ‖ Antioâ—b the Laune interpreters Athens to compel the Jews to depart from the laws of their fathers and not to live after the laws of God 2 And to pollute also the temple in Jerusalem and to call it the temple of Jupiter Olympius and that in Garizun of Jupiter the defender of strangers ‖ Out of Joseph 1.12 cap. 7. or as they werâ— as they did desire that dwelt in the place 3 The coming in of this mischief was sore and grievous to the people 4 For the temple was filled with not and revelling by the Gentiles who dallied with harlots and had to do with women within the circuit of the holy places and besides that brought in things that were not lawful 5 The altar also was filled with profane things which the law forbiddeth 6 Neither was it lawful for a man to keep sabbath-days or ancient feasts or to profess himself at all to be a Jew 7 And in the day of the kings birth every moneth they were brought by bitter constraint to eat of the sacrifices and when the feast of Bacchus was kept the Jews were compelled to go in procession to Bacchus carrying ivie 8 Moreover there went out a decree to the neighbour cities of the †Gr Grecians heathen by the suggestion of Ptolemee against the Jews that they should observe the same fashions be partakers of their sacrifices 9 And whoso would not conform themselves to the manners of the Gentiles should be put to death Then might a man have seen the present misery 10 For there were two women brought who had circumcised their children whom when they had openly led round about the city the babes hanging at their breasts they cast them down headlong from the wall 11 And others that had run together into caves near by to keep the sabbath-day secretly being discovered to Philip were all burnt together because they made a conscience to help themselves for the honour of the most sacred day 12 Now I beseech those that read this book that they be not discouraged for these calamities but that they judge those punishments not to be for destruction but for a chastning of our nation 13 For it is a token of his great goodness when wicked doers are not suffered any long time but forthwith punished 14 For not as with other nations whom the Lord patiently forbeareth to punish till they be come to the fulness of their sins so dealeth he with us 15 Lest that being come to the height of sin afterwards he should take vengeance of us 16 And therefore he never withdraweth his mercy from us And though he punish with adversity yet doth he never forsake his people 17 But let this that we have spoken be for a warning unto us And now will we come to the declaring of the matter in few words 18 Eleazar one of the principal scribes an aged man and of a well-savoured countenance was constrained to open his mouth and to eat swines flesh 19 But he choosing rather to die gloriously then to live stained with such an abomination spirit it forth and came of his own accord to the torment 20 As it behoved them to come that are resolute to stand out against such things as are not lawful for love of life to be tasted 21 But they that had the charge of that wicked feast for the old acquaintance they had with the man taking him aside besought him to bring flesh of his own provision such as was lawful for him to use and make as if he did eat of the flesh taken from the sacrifice commanded by the king 22 That in so doing he might he delivered from death and for the old friendship with them finde favour 23 But he began to consider discreetly and as became his age and the excellency of his ancient years and the honour of his gray head whereunto he was come and his most honest education from a childe or rather the holy law made and given by God therefore he answered accordingly and willed them straightways to send him to the grave 24 For it becometh not our age said he in any wise to dissemble whereby many young persons might think that Eleazar being fourscore years old and ten were now gone to a strange religion 25

I will go before you into Galilee 33 Peter answered and said unto him Though all men shall be offended because of thee yet will I never be offended 34 Jesus said unto him * John 1â— 38 Verily I say unto thee that this night before the cock crow thou shalt deny me thrice 35 Peter said unto him Though I should die with thee yet will I not dâ—ny thee Likewise also said all the disciples 36 * Mark 14.32 Luk. 22.39 Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane and saith unto the disciples Sit ye here while I go and pray yonder 37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee and began to be sorrowful and very heavy 38 Then saith he unto them My soul is exceeding sorrowful even unto death tarry ye here and watch with me 39 And he went a little farther and fell on his face and prayed saying O my Father if it be possible let this cup pass from me nevertheless not as I will but as thou wilt 40 And he cometh unto the disciples and findeth them asleep and saith unto Peter What could ye not watch with me one hour 41 Watch and pray that ye enter not into temptation the spirit indeed is willing but the flesh is weak 42 He went away again the second time and prayed saying O my Father if this cup may not pass away from me except I drink it thy will be done 43 And he came and found them asleep again for their eyes were heavy 44 And he left them and went away again and prayed the third time saying the same words 45 Then cometh he to his disciples and saith unto them Sleep on now and take your rest behold the hour is at hand and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners 46 Rise let us be going behold he is at hand that doth betray me 47 ¶ And * Mark 1â— 43. And he cometh and findeth them sleeping and saith unto Peter Simon sleepest thou couldst not thou watch one hour 38 Watch ye and pray lest ye enter into temptation the spirit truly is ready but the flesh is weak 39 And again he went away and prayed and spake the same words 40 And when he returned he found them asleep again for their eyes were heavy neither wist they what to answer him 41 And he cometh the third time and saith unto them Sleep on now and take your rest it is enough the hour is come behold the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners 42 Rise up let us go lo he that betrayeth me is at hand 43 ¶ * Mat. 26.47 And immediately while he yet spake cometh Judas one of the twelve and with him a great multitude with swords and staves from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders 44 And he that betrayed him had given them a token saying Whomsoever I shall kiss that same is he take him and head him away safely 45 And assoon as he was come he goeth straightway to him and saith Master master and kissed him 46 ¶ And they laid their hands on him and took him 47 And one of them that stood by drew a sword and smote a servant of the high priest and cut off his ear 48 And Jesus answered and said unto them Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and with staves to take me 49 I was daily with you in the temple teaching and ye took me not but the scriptures must be fulfilled 50 And they all forsook him and fled 51 And there followed him a certain young man having a linen cloth cast about his naked body and the young men laid hold on him 52 And he left the linen cloth and sled from them naked 53 ¶ * Mat. 25. â—7 And they led Jesus away to the high priest and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes 54 And Peter followed him afar off even into the palace of the high priest and he sat with the servants and warmed himself at the fire 55 * Mat. 26.19 And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death and found none 56 For many bare false witness against him but their witness agreed not together 57 And there arose certain and bare false witness against him saying 58 We heard him say I will destroy this temple that is made with hands and within three days I will build another made without hands 59 But neither
priests house And Peter followed afar off 55 * Matth. 26.69 And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall and were set down together Peter sat down among them 56 But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire and earnestly looked upon him and said This man was also with him 57 And he denied him saying Woman I know him not 58 And after a little while another saw him and said Thou art also of them And Peter said Man I am not 59 And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed saying Of a truth this fellox also was with him for he is a Galilean 60 And Peter said Man I know not what thou sayest And immediately while he yet spake the cock crew 61 And the Lord turned and looked upon Peter and Peter remembred the word of the Lord how he had said unto him Before the cock crow thou shalt deny me thrice 62 And Peter went out and wept bitterly 63 ¶ And the men that held Jesus mocked him and smote him 64 And when they had blindfolded him they stroke him on the face and asked him saying Prophesie who is it that smote thee 65 And many other things blasphemously spake they against him 66 ¶ * Mat. 27.1 And assoon as it was day the elders of the people the chief priests and the scribes came together and led him into their council 67 Saying Art thou the Christ tell us And he said unto them If I tell you you will not beleeve 68 And it I also ask you you will not answer me nor let me go 69 Hereafter shall the Son of man tit on the right hand of the power of God 70 Then said they all Art thou then the Son of God And he said unto them * Mark 14. â—1 Ye say that I am 71 And they said What need we any further witness for we our selves have heard of his own mouth CHAP. XXIII 1 Jesus is accused before Pilate and sent to Herod 8 Herod mocketh him 12 Herod and Pilate are made friends 18 Barabbas is desired of the people and is loosed by Pilate and Jesus is given to be crucifie i. 27 He telleth the women that lament him the destruction of Jerusalem 34 prayeth for his enemies 39 Two evil-doers are crue fieâ— with him 46 His death 50 His burial ANd the whole multitude of them arose and led him unto Pilate 2 And they began to accuse him saying We found this fellow perverting the nation and forbidding to give tribute to Cesar saying that he himself is Christ a king 3 * Mat. 27. â—1 And Pilate asked him saying Art thou the king of the Jews and he answered him and said Thou sayest it 4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people I finde no fault in this man 5 And they were the more fierce saying He stirreth up the people teaching throughout all Jury beginning from Galilee to this place 6 When Pilate heard of Galilee he asked whether the man were a Galilean 7 And assoon as he knew that he belonged unto Herods jurisdiction he sent him to Herod who himself was also at Jerusalem at that time 8 ¶ And when Herod saw Jesus he was exceeding glad for he was desirous to see him of a long season because he had heard many things of him and he hoped to have seen some miracle dome by him 9 Then he questioned with him in many words but he answered him nothing 10 And the chief priests scribes stood vehemently accused him 11 And Herod with his men of war set him at nought and mocked him and arayed him in a gorgeous robe and sent him again to Pilate 12 ¶ And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together for before they were at emnmity between themselves 13 ¶ * Mat. 27. â—3 And Pilate when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people 14 Said unto them Ye have brought this man unto me as one that perverteth the people and behold I have examined him before you have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him 15 No nor yet Herod for I sent you to him and lo nothing worthy of death is done unto him 16 I will therefore chastise him and release him 17 For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast 18 And they cried out all at once saying Away with this man and release unto us Barabbas 19 Who for a certain sedition made in the city and for murder was cast in prison 20 Pilate therefore willing to release jesus spake again to them 21 But they cried saying Crucifie him crucifie him 22 And he said unto them the third time Why what evil hath he done I have found no cause of death in him I will therefore chastise him and let him go 23 And they were instant with loud voices requiring that he might be crucified and the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed 24 And Pilate ‖ Or assented gave sentence that it should be as they required 25 And he released unto them him that for sedition murder was cast into prison whom they had desired but he delivered Jesus to their-will 26 * Mat. 27.32 And as they led him away they laid hold upon one Simon a Cyrenian coming out of the countrey and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus 27 ¶ And there followed him a great company of people and of women which also bewailed and lamented him 28 But Jesus turning unto them said Daughters of Jerusalem weep not for me but weep for your selves and for your children 29 For behold the days are coming in the which they shall say Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bare and the paps which never gave suck 30 * Isâ— 2.19 â—â—os 1â— 8 Rev. 6.16 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains Fall on us and to the hills Cover us 31 * 1 Pet. 4.17 For if they do these things in a green tree what shall be done in the dry 32 * Mat. 27.38 And there were also two other malefactours led with him to be put to death 33 And when they were come to the place which is called ‖ Or the place of a â—â—ull Calvarie there they crucified him and the malefactours one on the right hand and the other on the left 34 ¶ Then said Jesus Father forgive them for they know not what they do And they parted his raiment and cast lots 35 And the people stood beholding and the rulers also with them derided him saying He saved others let him save himself if he be Chriâ—t the chosen of God 36 And the souldiers also mocked him coming to him and offering him vineger 37 And saying If thou be the king of the Jews save thy self 38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of

VIII 1 At the opening of the seventh seal 2 seven angels had seven trumpets given them 6 Four of them sound their trumpets and great plagues follow 3 Another angel putteth incense to the prayers of the saints on the golden altar ANd when he had opened the seventh seal there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour 2 And I saw the seven angels which stood before God and to them were given seven trumpets 3 And another angel came and stood at the alter having a golden censer and there was given unto him much incense that he should ‖ Or add it to the prayâ—â—â— offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne 4 And the smoke of the incense which came with the prayers of the saints ascended up before God out of the angels hand 5 And the angel took the censer and filled it with fire of the altar and cast it into the earth and there were voices and thundrings and lightnings and an earthquake 6 And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound 7 The first angel sounded and there followed hail and fire mingled with bloud and they were cast upon the earth and the third part of trees was burnt up and all green grass was burnt up 8 And the second angel sounded and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea and the third part of the sea became bloud 9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea and had life died and the third part of the ships were destroyed 10 And the third angel sounded and there fell a great star from heaven burning as it were a lamp and it fell upon the third part of the rivers and upon the fountains of waters 11 And the name of the star is called Woormwood and the third part of the waters became woormwood and many men died of the waters because they were made bitter 12 And the fourth angel sounded and the third part of the sun was smitten and the third part of the moon and the third part of the stars so as the third part of them was darkned and the day shone not for a third part of it and the night likewise 13 And I behold and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven saying with a loud voice Wo wo wo to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels which are yet to sound CHAP. IX 1 At the sounding of the fifth angel a star falleth from heaven to whom is given the key of the bottomless pit 2 He openeth the pit and there come forth locusts like scorpions 12 The first wo past 13 The sixth trumpet soundeth 14 Four angels are let loose that were bound ANd the fifth angel sounded and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit 2 And he opened the bottomless pit and there arose a smoke out of the pit as the smoke of a great furnace and the sun and the air were darkned by reason of the smoke of the pit 3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth and unto them was given power as the sâ—orpions of the earth have power 4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth neither any green thing neither any tree but onely those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads 5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them but that they should be tormented five moneths and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion when he striketh a man 6 And in those days * Isa 2 1â— Chap. 6.16 shall men seek death and shall not finde it and shall desire to die and death shall flee from them 7 And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battel and on their heads were as it were crowns like Gold and their faces were as the faces of men 8 And they had hair as the hair of women and their teeth were as the teeth of lions 9 And they had breastplates as it were breastplates of iron and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battel 10 And they had tails like unto scorpions and there were stings in their tails and their power was to hurt men five moneths 11 And they had a king over them which is the angel of the bottomless pit whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon but in the Greek tongue hath his name ‖ That is to say a destroyer Apollyon 12 One wo is past and behold there come two woes more hereafter 13 And the sixth angel sounded and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God 14 Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates 15 And the four angels were loosed which were prepared ‖ Or at for an hour and a day and a moneth and a year for to slay the third part of men 16 And the number of the army of the hors-men were two hundred thousand thousand and I heard the number of them 17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision and them that sat on them having breast-plates of fire and of jacinct and brimstone and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone 18 By these three was the third part of men killed by the fire and by the smoke and by the brimstone which issued out of their mouths 19 For their power is in their mouth and in their tails for their tails were like unto serpents and had heads and with them they do hurt 20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands that they should not worship devils * Psal 115.4 and 135. â—5 and idols of gold and silver and brass and stone and of wood which neither can see nor hear nor walk 21 Neither repented they of their murders nor of their sorceries nor of their fornication nor of their thefts CHAP. X. A mighty strong angel appeareth with a book open in his hand 6 He sweareth by him that liveth for ever that there shall be no more time 9 John is commanded to take and eat the book ANd I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven clothed with a cloud and a rainbowe was upon his head and his face was as it were the sun and his feet as pillars of fire 2 And he had in his hand a little book open and he set his right foot upon the sea and his left foot on the earth 3 And cried with a loud voice as when a lion
And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth * Ezek. 3â— 2 39.1 Gog and Magog to gather them together to battel the number of whom is as the sand of the sea 9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth and compassed the camp of the saints about and the beloved city and fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them 10 And the devil that deceived thâ—m was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever 11 And I saw a great white throne and him that sat on it from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away and there was found no place for them 12 And I saw the dead small and great stand before God * Dan. 7.10 and the books were opened and another * Chap. 3.5 book was opened which is the book of life and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books according to their works 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it and death and ‖ Or the grave hell delivered up the dead which were in them and they were judged every man according to their works 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire This is the second death 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire CHAP. XXI 1 A new heaven and a new earth 10 The heavenly Jerusalem with a full description thereof 23 She needeth no sun the glory of God is her light 24 The kings of the earth bring their riches unto her ANd * Isa 65.17 2 Pet. 3.13 I saw a new heaven and a new earth for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away and there was no more sea 2 And I John saw the holy city new Jerusalem coming down from God out of heaven prepared as a bride adorned for her husband 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying Behold the tabernacle of God is with men and he will dwell with them and they shall be his people and God himself shall be with them and be their God 4 * Chap. 7.17 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes and there shall be no more death neither sorrow nor crying neither shall there be any more pain for the former things are passed away 5 And he that sat upon the throne said * Isa 43.19 2 Cor. 5.17 Behold I make all things new And he said unto me Write for these words are true and faithful 6 And he said unto me It is done * Chap. 1.8 22.13 I am Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end * Isa 55.1 I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely 7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things and I will be his God and he shall be my son 8 But the fearful and unbeleeving and the abominable and murderers and whoremongers and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone which is the second death 9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues and talked with me saying Come hither I will shew thee the bride the Lambs wife 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain and shewed me that great city the holy Jerusalem descending out of heaven from God 11 Having the glory of God and her light was like unto a stone most precious even like a jasper stone clear as crystal 12 And had a wall great and high and had twelve gates and at the gates twelve angels and names written thereon which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel 13 On the east three gates on the north three gates on the south three gates and on the west three gates 14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. 15 And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city and the gates thereof and the wall thereof 16 And the city lieth four-square and the length is as large as the breadth and he measured the city with the reed twelve thousand furlongs the length and the breadth and the height of it are equal 17 And he measured the wall thereof an hundred and fourty and four cubits according to the measure of a man that is of the angel 18 And the building of the wall of it was of jasper and the city was pure gold like unto clear glass 19 And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones The first foundation was jasper the second sapphire the third a chalcedony the fourth an emerald 20 The fifth sardonyx the sixth sardius the seventh chrysolite the eighth beryl the ninth a topaz the tenth a chrysoprasus the eleventh a jacinct the twelfth an amethyst 21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls every several gate was of one pearl and the street of the city was pure gold as it were transparent glass 22 And I saw no temple therein for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it 23 * Isa 60 â—â— And the city had no need of the sun neither of the moon to shine in it for the glory of God did lighten it and the Lamb is the light thereof 24 * Isa 60. â— And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it 25 * Isa 60.11 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day for there shall be no night there 26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it 27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth neither whatsoever worketh abomination or maketh a lie but they which are written in the Lambs * Phil. 4.3 Chap. 3.5 and 20.12 book of life CHAP. XXII 1 The river of the water of life 2 The tree of life 5 The light of the city of God is himself 9 The angel will not be worshipped 18 Nothing may be added to the word of God nor taken therefrom ANd he shewed me a pure river of water of life clear as erystal proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the midst of the street of it and of either side of the river was there the tree of life which bare twelve manner of fruits and yeelded her fruit every moneth and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations 3 And there shall be no more curse but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it and his servants shall serve him 4 And they shall see his face and his name shall be in their foreheads 5 * Chap. 2â— 23 And there shall be no night there and they need no candle neither light of the sun for the Lord God giveth them light and they shall reign for ever and ever 6 And he said unto me These sayings are faithful and true And the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done 7 Behold I come quickly blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophesie of this book 8 And I John saw these things and heard them And when I had heard and seen I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things 9 Then saith he unto me * Chap. 19.10 See thou do it not for I am thy fellow-servant and of thy brethren the prophets and of them which keep the sayings of this book worship God 10 And he saith unto me Seal not the sayings of the prophesie of this book for the time is at hand 11 He that is unjust let him be unjust still and he which is filthy let him be filthy still and he that is righteous let him be righteous still and he that is holy let him be holy still 12 And behold I come quickly and my reward is with me * Rom. 2.6 to give every man according as his work shall be 13 I am Alpha and Omega * Isa 41.4 and 44.6 Chap. 1.8 and 21.6 the beginning and the end the first and the last 14 Blessed are they that do his commandments that they may have right to the tree of life and may enter in through the gates into the city 15 For without are dogs and sorcerers and whoremongers and murderers and idolaters and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie 16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testifie unto you these things in the churches I am the root and the offspring of David and the bright and morning star 17 And the Spirit and the Bride say Come And let him that heareth say Come * Isa 55.1 And let him that is athirst come And whosoever will let him take the water of life freely 18 For I testifie unto every man that heareth the words of the prophesie of this book * Deut. 4.2 Prov. 30 6. If any man shall add unto these things God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophesie God shall take away his part out of the book of life and out of the holy city and from the things which are written in this book 20 He which testifieth these things saith Surely I come quickly Amen Even so Come Lord Jesus 21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all Amen FINIS

XXII 1 Of humanity toward brethren 5 The sex is to be distinguished by apparel 6 The dam is not to be taken with her young ones 8 The house must have battlements 9 Confusion is to be avoided 12 Fringes upon the vesture 13 The punishment of him that slandereth his wife 20 22 Of adultery 25 Of rape 28 and of fornication 30 Incest THou * Exod. 23.4 shalt not see thy brothers ox or his sheâ—p go astray and hide thy selt from them thou shalt in any case bring them again unto thy brother 2 And it thy brother be not nigh unto thee or if thou know him not then thou shalt bring it unto thine own house and it shall be with thee until thy brother seek after it and thou shalt restore it to him again 3 In like manner shalt thou do with his ass so shalt thou do with his raiment and with all lost things of thy brothers which he hath lost and thou hast found shalt thou do likewise thou mayest not hide thy self 4 ¶ Thou shalt not see thy brothers ass or his ox fall down by the way and hide thy self from them thou shalt surely help him to lâ—â—t them up again 5 ¶ The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man neither shall a man put on a womans garment for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God 6 ¶ If a birds nest chance to be before thee in the way in any tree or on the ground whether they be young ones or eggs and the dam sitting upon the young or upon the eggs thou shalt not take the dam with the young 7 But thou shalt in any wise let the dam go take the young to thee that it may be well with thee and that thou mayest prolong thy days 8 ¶ When thou buildest a new house then thou shalt make a battlement for thy roof that thou bring not bloud upon thine house if any man fall from thence 9 ¶ Thou shalt not sowethy vineyard with divers seeds lest the †Heb. fulness of thy seed fuit of thy seed which thou hast sown and the fruit of thy vineyard be defiled 10 ¶ Thou shalt not plow with an ox and ass together 11 ¶ * Lev. 19.19 Thou shalt not wear a garment of divers sorts as of woollen and linen together 12 ¶ Thou shalt make thee * Num 15.38 fringes upon the four †Heb. wings quarters of thy vesture wherewith thou coverest thy self 13 ¶ If any man take a wife and go â—n unto her and hate her 14 And give occasion of speech against her and bring up an evil name upon her and say I took this woman and when I came to her I found her not a maid 15 Then shall the father of the damsel and her mother take and bring forth the tokens of the damsels virginity unto the elders of the city in the gate 16 And the damsels father shall say unto the elders I gave my daughter unto this man to wife and he hateth her 17 And lo he hath given occasions of speech against her saying I found not thy daughter a maid and yet these are the tokens of my daughters virginity and they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city 18 And the elders of that city shall take that man and chastise him 19 And they shall amerce him in an hundred shekels of silver and give them unto the father of the damsel because he hath brought up an evil name upon a virgin of Israel and she shall be his wife he may not put her away all his days 20 But if this thing be true and the tokens of virginity be not found for the damsel 21 Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her fathers house and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die because she hath wrought folly in Israel to play the whore in her fathers house so shalt thou put evil away from among you 22 ¶ * Levit. 20.10 If a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband then they shall both of them die both the man that lay with the woman and the woman so shalt thou put away evil from Israel 23 ¶ If a damsel that is a virgin be betrothed unto an husband and a man finde hâ—r in the city and lie with her 24 Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city and ye shall stone them with stones that they die the damsel because she cried not being in the city and the man because he hath humbled his neighbours wife so thou shalt put away evil from among you 25 ¶ But if a man finde a betrothed damsel in the field and the mâ—n ‖ Or take strong hold of her force her and he with her then the man onely that lay with her shall die 26 But unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death
