shall first set forth 10 ¶ On the south-side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their armies and the captain of the children of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur 11 And his host and those that were numbred thereof were fourty and six thousand and five hundred 12 And those which pitch by him shall be the tribe of Simâ—on and the captain of the children of Simeon shall be Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai 13 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fifty and â—ine thousand and three hundred 14 Then the tribe of Gad and the captain of the sons of Gad shall be Eliasaph the son of Reuel 15 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty and five thousand and six hundred and fifty 16 All that were numbred in the camp of Reuben were an hundred thousand and fifty and one thousand and four hundred and fifty throughout their armies and they shall set forth in the second rank 17 ¶ Then the tabernacle of the congregation shall set forward with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camp as they encamp so shall they set forward every man in his place by their standards 18 ¶ On the west-side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their armies and the captain of the sons of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud 19 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty thousand and five hundred 20 And by him shall be the tribe of Manasseh and the captain of the children of Manasseh shall be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur 21 And his host and those that were numbred of them were thirty and two thousand and two hundred 22 Then the tribe of Benjamin and the captain of the sons of Benjamin shall be Abidan the son of Gideoni 23 And his host and those that were numbred of them were thirty and five thousand and four hundred 24 All that were numbred of the camp of Ephraim were an hundred thousand and eight thousand and an hundred throughout their armies and they shall go forward in the third rank 25 ¶ The standard of the camp of Dan shall be on the north-side by their armies and the captain of the children of Dan shall be Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai 26 And his host and those that were numbred of them were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred 27 And those that encamp by him shall be the tribe of Asher and the captain of the children of Asher shall be Pagiel the son of Ocran 28 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty and one thousand and five hundred 29 Then the tribe of Naphtali and the captain of the children of Naphtali shall be Ahira the son of Enan 30 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fifty and three thousand and four hundred 31 All they that were numbred in the camp of Dan were an hundred thousand and fifty and seven thousand and six hundred they shall go hindmost with their standards 32 ¶ These are those which were numbred of the children of Israel by the house of their fathers all those that were numbred of the camps throughout their hosts were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty 33 But the Levites were not numbred among the children of Israel as the LORD commanded Moses 34 And the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses so they pitched by their standards and so they set forward every one after their families according to the house of their fathers CHAP. III. 1 Jehorams reign 4 Mesha rebelleth 6 Jehoram with Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom being distressed for want of water by Elisha obtaineth water and promise of victory 21 The Moabites deceived by the colour of the water coming to spoil are overcome 26 The king of Moah by sacrificing the king of Edoms son raiseth the siege NOw Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah and reigned twelve years 2 And he wrought evil in the sight of the LORD but not like his father and like his mother for he put away the †Heb. statue image of Baal that his father had made 3 Nevertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat which made Israel to sin he departed not therefrom 4 ¶ And Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-master and rendred unto the king of Israel an hundred thousand lambs and an hundred thousand rams with the wool 5 But it came to pass when * Chap 1.1 Ahab was dead that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel 6 ¶ And king Jehoram went out of Samaria the same time and numbred all Israel 7 And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah saying The king of Moab hath rebelled against me wilt thou go with me against Moab to battel And he said I will go up * 1 Kings 22.4 I am as thou art my people as thy people and my horses as thy horses 8 And he said Which way shall we go up And he answered The way through the wilderness of Edom. 9 So the king of Israel went and the king of Judah and the king of Edom and they fetcht a compass of seven days journey and there was no water for the host and for the cattel †Heb. at their feet that followed them 10 And the king of Israel said Alas that the LORD hath called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab 11 But Jehoshaphat said Is there not here a prophet of the LORD that we may enquire of the LORD by him And one of the king of Israels servants answered and said Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat which poured water on the hands of Elijah 12 And Jehoshaphat said The word of the LORD is with him So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him 13 And Elisha said unto the king of Israel What have I to do with thee get thee to the prophets of thy father and to the prophets of thy mother And the king of Israel said unto him Nay for the LORD hath called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab 14 And Elisha said As the LORD of hosts liveth before whom I stand surely were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah I would not look toward thee nor see thee 15 But now bring me a minstrel And it came to pass when the minstrel played that the hand of the LORD came upon him 16 And he said Thus saith the LORD Make this valley full of ditches 17 For thus saith the LORD Ye shall not see wind neither shall ye see rain yet that valley shall be filled with water that ye may drink both ye and your cattel and your beasts 18 And this is but a light thing in the sight of the LORD he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand 19 And ye shall smite every fenced city and every choice city and shall fell every good tree and stop all wells of water and †Heb. grieve mar every good piece of land with stones 20 And it came to pass in the morning when the meat-offering was offered that behold there came water by the way of Edom and the countrey was filled with water 21 ¶ And when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come up to fight against them they †Heb. were cried together gathered all that were able to †Heb. gird himself with a girdle put on armour and upward and stood in the border 22 And they rose up early in the morning and the sun shone upon the water and the Moabites saw the water on the other side as red as bloud 23 And they said This is bloud the kings are surely †Heb. destroyed slain and they have smitten one another now therefore Moab to the spoil 24 And when they came to the camp of Israel the Israelites rose up and smote the Moabites so that they fled before them but ‖ Or they smote in it even smiting they went forward smiting the Moabites even in their countrey 25 And they beat down the cities and on every good piece of land cast every man his stone and filled it and they stopped all the wells of water and felled all the good trees †Heb. until he left the stones thereof in Kirharaseth onely in Kir-haraseth left they the stones thereof howbeit the slingers went about it and smote it 26 ¶ And when the king of Moab saw that the battel was too sore for him he took with him seven hundred men that drew swords to break through even unto the king of Edom but they could not 27 Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead and offered him for a burnt-offering upon the wall and there was great indignation against Israel and they departed

Wisdom of JESVS the son of SIRACH or ECCLESIASTICUS A prologue made by an uncertain Author Some reser this prologue to Athanasius because it is found in his Synopsis THis Jesus was the son of Sirach and grandchilde to Jesus of the same name with him this man therefore lived in the latter times after the people had been led away captive and called home again and almost after all he prophets Now his grandfather Jesus as he himself witnesseth was a man of great diligence and wisdom among the Hebrews who did not onely gather the grave and short sentences of wise men that had been before him but himself also uttered some of his own full of much understanding and wisdom When as therefore the first Jesus died leaving this book almost ‖ Or collected perfected Sirach his son receiving it after him left it to his own son Jesus who having gotten it into his hands compiled it all orderly into one volume and called it Wisdom intituling it both by his own name his fathers name and his grandfathers alluring the hearer by the very name of Wisdom to have a greater love to the study of this book It containeth therefore wise sayings dark sentences and parables and certain particular ancient godly stories of men that pleased God also his prayer and song moreover what benefits God had vouchsafed his people and what plagues he had heaped upon their enemies This Jesus did imitate XXIV 1 Wickedness goeth often unpunished 17 There is a secret judgement for the wicked WHy seeing times are not hidden from the Almighty do they that know him not see his days 2 Some remove the * Deut. 1â— 14. 27.17 land-marks they violently take away flocks and ‖ Or feed them feed thereof 3 They drive away the ass of the father-less they take the widows ox for a pledge 4 They turn the needy out of the way the poor of the earth hide themselves together 5 Behold as wilde asses in the desert go they forth to their work rising betimes for a prey the wilderness yeeldeth food for them and for their children 6 They reap every one his †Heb. mingled corn or dredge corn in the field and †Heb. the wicked cather the vintage they gather the vintage of the wicked 7 They cause the naked to lodge without clothing that they have no covering in the cold 8 They are wet with the showers of the mountains and embrace the rock for want of a shelter 9 They pluck the fatherless from the breast and take a pledge of the poor 10 They cause him to go naked without clothing and they take away the sheaf from the hungry 11 Which make oyl within their walls and tread their wine-presses and suffer thirst 12 Men groan from out of the city and the soul of the wounded crieth out yet God layeth not folly to them 13 They are of those that rebel against the light they know not the ways thereof nor abide in the paths thereof 14 The murderer rising with the light killeth the poor and needy and in the night is as a thief 15 The eye also of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight saying No eye shall see me and †Heb. setteth his face insecret disguiseth his face 16 In the dark they dig through houses which they had marked for themselves in the day-time they know not the light 17 For the morning is to them even as the shadow of death if one know them they are in the terrours of the shadow of death 18 He is swift as their waters their portion is cursed in the earth he beholdeth not the way of the vineyards 19 Drought and heat †Heb. violently take consume the snow-waters so doth the grave those which have sinned 20 The womb shall forget him the worm shall feed sweetly on him he shall be no more remembred and wickedness shall be broken as a tree 21 He evil entreateth the barren that beareth not and doeth not good to the widow 22 He draweth also the mighty with his power he riseth up ‖ Or be trusteth not his own life and no man is sure of life 23 Though it be given him to be in safety whereon he resteth yet his eyes are upon their ways 24 They are exalted for a little while but †Heb. are not are gone and brought low they are †Heb. closed up taken out of the way as all other and cut off as the tops of the ears of corn 25 And if it be not so now who will make me a liar and make my speech nothing worth CHAP. XXV Bildad sheweth that man cannot be justified before God THen answered Bildad the Shuhite and said 2 Dominion and fear are with him he maketh peace in his high places 3 Is there any number of his armies and upon whom doth not his light arise 4 * Ch. 4.17 c. 15.14 c. XXVI 1 Job reproving the unebar table spirit of Bildad 5 acknowledgeth the power of God to be infinite and unsearchable BUt Job answered and said 2 How hast thou helped him that is without power how savest thou the arm that hath no strength 3 How hast thou counselled him that hath no wisdom and how hast thou plentifully declared the thing as it is 4 To whom hast thou uttered words and whose spirit came from thee 5 Dead things are formed from under the waters ‖ Or with the inhabitants and the inhabitants thereof 6 * Prov. 15.11 Hell is naked before him and destruction hath no covering 7 He stretcheth out the north over the empty place and hangeth the eatch upon nothing 8 He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds and the cloud is not rent under them 9 He holdeth back the face of his throne spreadeth his cloud upon it 10 He hath compassed the waters with pounds †Heb. until the eâ—â— of theâ—â— with darkness until the day and night come to an end 11 The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his reproof 12 He divideth the sea with his power and by his understanding he smiteth through †Heb. pride the proud 13 By hâ—s spirit he hath garnished the heavens his hand hath formed the crooked serpent 14 Lo these are parts of his ways but how little a portion is heard of him but the thunder of his power who can understand CHAP. XXVII 1 Joâ— protesieth his sincerity 8 The hypocrite is without hope 11 The blesings which the wicked have are turned into curses MOreover Job †Heb. added to take up continued his parable and said 2 As God liveth who hath taken away my judgement and the Almighty who hath †Heb. maâ—e my soul bitter vexed my soul 3 All the while my breath is in mâ— and ‖ That is the â—râ—ath which God gave him the spirit of God is in my nostrils 4 My lips shall not speak wickedness nor my tongue utter deceit 5 God forbid that I should justifie you till I die I will not remove my integrity from me 6 My righteousness I hold fast and will not let it go my heart shall not reproach me †Heb. from my days so long as I live 7 Let mine enemy be as the wicked and he that riseth up against me as the unrighteous 8 * Matth. 16.26 For what is the hope of the hypocrite though he hath

XXVIII 1 There is a knowledge of natural things 12 But wisdom is an excellent gift of God SUrely there is ‖ Or a mine a vein for the silver and a place for gold where they finde it 2 Iron is taken out of the ‖ Or â—â—â—st earth and brass is molten out of the stone 3 He setteth an end to darkness and searcheth out all perfection the stones of darkness and the shadow of death 4 The floud breaketh out from the inhabitant even the waters forgotten of the foot they are dried up they are gone away from men 5 As for the earth out of it cometh bread and under it is turned up as it were fire 6 The stones of it are the place of sapphires it hath ‖ Or â—eld-oâ—e dust of gold 7 There is a path which no fowl knoweth and which the vultures eye hath not seen 8 The lions whelps have not troden it nor the fierce lion passed by it 9 He putteth forth his hand upon the ‖ Or sâ—inâ— rock he overturneth the mountains by the roots 10 He cutteth out rivers among the rocks and his eye seeth every precious thing 11 He bindeth the flouds †Heb. from weeping from overflowing and the thing that is hid bringeth he forth to light 12 But where shall wisdom be found and where is the place of understanding 13 Man knoweth not the price thereof neither is it found in the land of the living 14 * Rom. 11.33 34. XI 1 Directions for charity 7 Death in life 9 and the day of judgement in the days of youth are to be thought on CAst thy bread †Heb. upon the face of the waters upon the waters for thou shalt finde it after * Deu. 15.10 Pr. 19.17 Mat. 10.42 many days 2 Give a portion to seven and also to eight for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth 3 If the clouds be full of rain they empty themselves upon the earth and if the tree fall toward the south or toward the north in the place where the tree falleth there it shall be 4 He that observeth the wind shall not sowe and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap 5 As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with childe even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all 6 In the morning sowe thy seed and in the evening withhold not thine hand for thou knowest not whether †Heb. shall be right shall prosper either this or that or whether they both shall be alike good 7 ¶ Truly the light is sweet and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun 8 But if a man live many years and rejoyce in them all yet let him remember the days of darkness for they shall be many All that cometh is vanity 9 ¶ Rejoyce O young man in thy youth and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth and walk in the ways of thy heart and in the sight of thine eyes but know thou that for all these things God will bring thee into judgement 10 Therefore remove ‖ Or anger sorrow from thy heart and put away evil from thy flesh for childhood and youth are vanity CHAP. V. 1 A lamentation for Israel 4 An exhortation to repentance 21 God rejecteth their hypocritical service HEar ye this word which I take up against you even a lamentation O house of Israel 2 The virgin of Israel is faln she shall no more rise she is forsaken upon her land there is none to raise her up 3 For thus saith the Lord GOD The city that went out by a thousand shall leave an hundred and that which went forth by an hundred shall leave ten to the house of Israel 4 ¶ For thus saith the LORD unto the house of Israel Seek ye me and ye shall live 5 But seek not * Chap. 4.4 Beht-el nor enter into Gilgal and pass not to Beer-sheba for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity and Beth-el shall come to nought 6 Seek the LORD and ye shall live lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph and devour it and there be none to quench it in Beth-el 7 Ye who turn judgement to wormwood and leave off righteousness in the earth 8 Seek him that maketh the * Job â— â— and 38. â—â— seven stars and Orion and turneth the shadow of death into the morning and maketh the day dark with night that * Chap. 9.6 calleth for the waters of the sea and poureth them out upon the face of the earth the LORD is his name 9 That strengthneth the †Heb. spoil spoiled against the strong so that the spoiled shall come against the fortress 10 They hate him that rebuketh in the gate and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly 11 Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor and ye take from him burdens of wheat * Zeph. 1.13 ye have built houses of hewn stone but ye shall not dwell in them ye have planted †Heb. vineyards of desire pleasant vineyards but ye shall not drink wine of them 12 For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins they afflict the just they take ‖ Or a ransom a bribe and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right 13 Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time for it is an evil time 14 Seek good and not evil that ye may live and so the LORD the God of hosts shall be with you as ye have spoken 15 * Ps 34.14 97.10 Rom. 12.9 Hate the evil and love the good and establish judgement in the gate it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph 16 Therefore the LORD the God of hosts the Lord saith thus Wailing shall be in all streets and they shall say in all the high-ways Alas alas and they shall call the husbandman to mourning and such as are skilful of lamentation to wailing 17 And in all vineyards shall be wailing for I will pass through thee saith the LORD 18 * Isa 5.19 Jer. 30.7 Joel 2.2 Zeph. 1.15 Wo unto you that desire the day of the LORD to what end is it for you the day of the LORD is darkness and not light 19 As if a man did flee from a lion and a bear met him or went into the house and leaned his hand on the wall and a serpent hit him 20 Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness and not light even very dark and no brightness in it 21 ¶ * Isa 1.11 Jer. 6.20 I hate I despise your feast-days and I will not ‖
they shall be given you to be consumed 13 And I am coming before Holofernes the chief captain of your army to declare words of truth and I will shew him a way whereby he shall go and win all the hill-countrey without losing the body or life of any one of his men 14 Now when the men heard her words and beheld her countenance they wondred greatly at her beauty and said unto her 15 Thou hast saved thy life in that thou hast hasted to come down to the presence of our lord now therefore come to his tent and some of us shall conduct thee until they have delivered thee to his hands 16 And when thou standest before him be not afraid in thine heart but shew unto him according to thy word and he will entreat thee well 17 Then they chose out of them an hundred men ‖ Or and they prepared a â—hariet for her to accompany her and her maid and they brought her to the tent of Holofernes 18 Then was there a concourse throughout all the camp for her coming was noised among the tents and they came about her as she stood without the tent of Holofernes till they told him of her 19 And they wondred at her beauty and admired the children of Israel because of her and every one said to his neighbour Who would despise this people that have among them such women surely it is not good that one man of them be left who being let go might deceive the whole earth 20 And they that lay near Holofernes went out and all his servants and they brought her into the tent 21 Now Holofernes rested upon his bed under a canopie which was woven with purple and gold and emeralds and precious stones 22 So they shewed him of her and he came out before his tent with silver lamps going before him 23 And when Judith was come before him and his servants they all marvelled at the beauty of her countenance and she fell down upon her face and did reverence unto him and his servants took her up CHAP. XI 3 Holofernes asketh Judith the cause of her coming 6 She telleth him how and when he may prevail 20 He is much pleased with her wisdom and beauty THen said Holofernes unto her Woman be of good comfort fear not in thine heart for I never hurt any that was willing to serve Nabuchodonosor the king of all the earth 2 Now therefore if thy people that dwelleth in the mountains had not set light by me I would not have lifted up my spear against them but they have done these things to themselves 3 But now tell me wherefore thou art fled from them and art come unto us for thou art come for safeguard be of good comfort thou shalt live this night and hereafter 4 For none shall hurt thee but entreat thee well as they do the servants of king Nabuchodonosor my lord 5 Then Judith said unto him Receive the words of thy servant and suffer thine hand-maid to speak in thy presence and I will declare no lie to my lord this night 6 And if thou wilt follow the words of thine hand-maid God will bring the thing perfectly to pass by thee and my lord shall not fail of his purposes 7 As Nabuchodonosor king of all the earth liveth and as his power liveth who hath sent thee for the upholding of every living thing for not onely men shall serve him by thee but also the beasts of the field and the cattle and the fowls of the air shall live by thy power under Nabuchodonosor and all his house 8 For we have heard of thy wisdom and thy policies and it is reported in all the earth that thou onely art ‖ Or in savour excellent in all the kingdom and mighty in knowledge and wonderful in feats of war 9 Now as concerning the matter which Achior did speak in thy council we have heard his words for the men of Bethulia ‖ Or gat him saved him and he declared unto them all that he had spoken unto thee 10 Therefore O lord and governour reject not his word but lay it up in thine heart for it is true for our nation shall not be punished neither can the sword prevail against them except they sin against their God 11 And now that my lord be not defeated and frustrate of his purpose even death is now faln upon them and their sin hath overtaken them wherewith they will provoke their God to anger whensoever they shall do that which is not fit to be done 12 For their victuals fail them and all their water is scant and they have determined to lay hands upon their cattel and purposed to consume all those things that God hath forbidden them to eat by his laws 13 And are resolved to spend the first-fruits of the corn and the tenths of wine and oyl which they had sanctified and reserved for the priests that serve in Jerusalem before the â—ace of our God the which things it is not lawful for any of the people so much as to touch with their hands 14 For they have sent some to Jerusalem because they also that dwell there have done the like to bring them a license from the senate 15 Now when they shall bring them word they will forthwith do it and they shall be given thee to be destroyed the same day 16 Wherefore I thine hand-maid knowing all this am fled from their presence and God hath sent me to work things with thee whereat all the earth shall be astonished and whosoever shall hear it 17 For thy servant is religious and serveth the God of heaven day and night now therefore my lord I will remain with thee and thy servant will go out by night into the valley and I will pray unto God and he will tell me when they have committed their sins 18 And I will come and shew it unto thee then thou shalt go forth with all thine army and there shall be none of them that shall resist thee 19 And I will lead thee through the midst of Judea until thou come before Jerusalem and I will set thy throne in the midst thereof and thou shalt drive them as sheep that have no shepherd and a dog shall not so much as ‖ Or. bark open his mouth at thee for ‖ Or. these things have I spoken these things were told me according to my foreknowledge and they were declared unto me and I am sent to tell thee 20 Then her words pleased Holofernes and all his servants and they marvelled at her wisdom and said 21 There is not such a woman from one end of the earth to the other both for beauty of face and wisdom of words 22 Likewise Holofernes said unto her God hath done well to send thee before the people that strength might be in our hands and destruction upon them that lightly regard my lord 23 And now thou art both beautiful in thy countenance and witty in thy
