shall first set forth 10 ¶ On the south-side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their armies and the captain of the children of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur 11 And his host and those that were numbred thereof were fourty and six thousand and five hundred 12 And those which pitch by him shall be the tribe of Simâ—on and the captain of the children of Simeon shall be Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai 13 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fifty and â—ine thousand and three hundred 14 Then the tribe of Gad and the captain of the sons of Gad shall be Eliasaph the son of Reuel 15 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty and five thousand and six hundred and fifty 16 All that were numbred in the camp of Reuben were an hundred thousand and fifty and one thousand and four hundred and fifty throughout their armies and they shall set forth in the second rank 17 ¶ Then the tabernacle of the congregation shall set forward with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camp as they encamp so shall they set forward every man in his place by their standards 18 ¶ On the west-side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their armies and the captain of the sons of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud 19 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty thousand and five hundred 20 And by him shall be the tribe of Manasseh and the captain of the children of Manasseh shall be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur 21 And his host and those that were numbred of them were thirty and two thousand and two hundred 22 Then the tribe of Benjamin and the captain of the sons of Benjamin shall be Abidan the son of Gideoni 23 And his host and those that were numbred of them were thirty and five thousand and four hundred 24 All that were numbred of the camp of Ephraim were an hundred thousand and eight thousand and an hundred throughout their armies and they shall go forward in the third rank 25 ¶ The standard of the camp of Dan shall be on the north-side by their armies and the captain of the children of Dan shall be Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai 26 And his host and those that were numbred of them were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred 27 And those that encamp by him shall be the tribe of Asher and the captain of the children of Asher shall be Pagiel the son of Ocran 28 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty and one thousand and five hundred 29 Then the tribe of Naphtali and the captain of the children of Naphtali shall be Ahira the son of Enan 30 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fifty and three thousand and four hundred 31 All they that were numbred in the camp of Dan were an hundred thousand and fifty and seven thousand and six hundred they shall go hindmost with their standards 32 ¶ These are those which were numbred of the children of Israel by the house of their fathers all those that were numbred of the camps throughout their hosts were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty 33 But the Levites were not numbred among the children of Israel as the LORD commanded Moses 34 And the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses so they pitched by their standards and so they set forward every one after their families according to the house of their fathers CHAP. III. 1 The sons of Aaron 5 The Levites are given to the priests for the service of the tabernacleâ— 11 in stead of the first-born 14 The Levites are numbred by their families 21 The families number and charge of the Gershonites 27 of the Koâ—athites 33 of the Merarites 38 The place and charge of Moses and Aaron 40 The first-born are freed by the Levites 44 The overplus are redeemed THese also are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that the LORD spake with Moses in mount Sinai 2 And these are the names of the sons of Aaron Nadab the * Exod. 6.23 first-born and Abihu Eleazar and Ithamar 3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron the priests which were anointed †Heb. whose hand be filled whom he consecrated to minister in the priests office 4 * Lev. 10.1 Ch. 26.61 1 Chr. 24.2 And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD when they offered strange fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai and they had no children and Eleazar and Ithamar ministred in the priests office in the sight of Aaron their father 5 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 6 Bring the tribe of Levi near and present them before Aaron the priest that they may minister unto him 7 And they shall keep his charge and the charge of the whole congregation before the tabernacle of the congregation to do the service of the tabernacle 8 And they shall keep all the instruments of the tabernacle of the congregation and the charge of the children of Israel to do the service of the tabernacle 9 And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons they are wholly given unto him out of the children of Israel 10 And thou shalt appoint Aaron and his sons and they shall wait on their priests office and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death 11 ¶ And the LORD spake unte Moses saying 12 And I behold I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel in stead of all the first-born that openeth the matrice among the children of Israel therefore the Levites shall be mine 13 Because all the first-born are mine * Exod. 13.2 Lev. 27.26 Chap. 8.16 Luk. 2.23 for on the day that I smote all the first born in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto me all the first-born in Israel both man and beast mine they shall be I am the LORD 14 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai saying 15 Number the children of Levi after the house of their fathers by their families every male from a moneth old and upward shalt thou number them 16 And Moses numbred them according to the †Heb. mouth word of the LORD as he was commanded 17 * Gen. 46.11 Exod. 6.16 Ch. 26.57 1 Chro. 6.1 And these were the sons of Levi by their names Gershon and Kohath and Merari 18 And these are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families Libni and Shimei 19 And the sons of Kohath by their families Amram and Izehar Hebron and Uzziel 20 And the sons of Merari by their families Mahli and Mushi these are the families of the Levites according to the house of their fathers 21 Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites and the family
of the Shimites these are the families of the Gershonites 22 Those that were numbred of them according to the number of all the males from a moneth old and upward even those that were numbred of them were seven thousand and five hundred 23 The families of the Gershonites shall pitch behinde the tabernacle west-ward 24 And the chief of the house of the father of the Gershonites shall be Eliasaph the son of Lael 25 And the charge of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation shall be the tabernacle and the tent the covering thereof and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation 26 And the hangings of the court and the curtain for the door of the court which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about and the cords of it for all the service thereof 27 ¶ And of Kohath was the family of the Amramites and the family of the Izeharites and the family of the Hebronites and the family of the Uzzielites these are the families of the Kohathites 28 In the number of all the males from a moneth old and uâ—ward were eight thousand six hundred keeping the charge of the sanctâ—ary 29 The families of the sons of Kohath shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle south-ward 30 And the chief of the house of the father of the families of the Kohathites shall be Elizaphan the son of Uzziel 31 And their charge shall be the ark and the table and the candlestick and the altars and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith they minister and the hanging and all the service thereof 32 And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be chief over the chief of the Levites and have the oversight of them that keep the charge of the sanctuary 33 ¶ Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites and the family of the Mushites these are the families of Merari 34 And those that were numbred of them according to the number of all the males from a moneth old and upward were six thousand and two hundred 35 And the chief of the house of the father of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail these shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle north-ward 36 And †Heb. the office of the charge under the custody and charge of the sons of Merari shall be the boards of the tabernacle and the bars thereof and the pillars thereof and the sockets thereof and all the vessels thereof and all that serveth thereto 37 And the pillars of the court round about and their sockets and their pins and their cords 38 ¶ But those that encamp before the tabernacle toward the east even before the tabernacle of the congregation east-ward shall be Moses and Aaron and his sons keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Israel and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death 39 All that were numbred of the Levites which Moses and Aaron numbred at the commandment of the LORD throughout their families all the males from a moneth old and upward were twenty and two thousand 40 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Number all the first-born of the males of the children of Israel from a moneth old and upward and take the number of their names 41 And thou shalt take the Levites for me I am the LORD in stead of all the first-born among the children of Israel and the cattel of the Levites instead of all the firstlings among the cattel of the children of Israel 42 And Moses numbred as the LORD commanded him all the first-born among the children of Israel 43 And all the first-born males by the number of names from a moneth old and upward of those that were numbred of them were twenty and two thousand two hundred and threescore and thirteen 44 And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 45 Take the Levites in stead of all the first-born among the children of Israel and the cattel of the Levites in stead of their cattel and the Levites shall be mine I am the LORD 46 And for those that are to be redeemed of the two hundred and threescore and thirteen of the first-born of the children of Israel which are more then the Levites 47 Thou shalt even take five shekels a piece by the poll after the shekel of the sanctuary shalt thou take them * Exod. 30.13 Lev. 27.25 Ch. 18.16 Ezek. 45.12 the shekel is twenty gerahs 48 And thou shalt give the money wherewith the odd number of them is to be redeemed unto Aaron and to his sons 49 And Moses took the redemption-money of them that were over and above them that were redeemed by the Levites 50 Of the first-born of the children of Israel took he the money a thousand three hundred and threescore and five shekels after the shekel of the sanctuary 51 And Moses gave the money of them that were redeemed unto Aaron and to his sons according to the word of the LORD as the LORD commanded Moses CHAP. IV. 1 The age and time of the Levites service 4 The carriage of the Kohathites when the priests have taken down the tabernacle 16 The charge of Eleazar 17 The office of the priests 21 The carriage of the Gershonites 29 The carriage of the Merarites 34 The number of the Kohathites 38 of the Gershonites 42 and of the Merarites ANd the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron saying 2 Take the sum of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi after their families by the house of their fathers 3 From thirty years old upward even until fifty years old all that enter into the host to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation 4 This shall be the service of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation about the most holy things 5 ¶ And when the camp setteth forward Aaron shall come and his sons and they shall take down the covering vail and cover the ark of testimony with it 6 And shall put thereon the covering of badgers skins and shall spread over it a cloth wholly of blue and shall put in the staves thereof 7 And upon the * Ex. 25.30 table of shew-bread they shall spread a cloth of blue and put thereon the dishes and the spoons and the bowls and covers to ‖ Or pour out withal cover withal and the continual bread shall be thereon 8 And they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet and cover the same with a covering of badgers skins and shall put in the staves thereof 9 And they shall take a cloth of blue and cover the * Exod. 25.31 candlestick of the light * Exod. 25.37 38. and his lamps and his tongs and his snuff-dishes and all the oyl-vessels thereof wherewith they mâ—nister unto it 10 And they shall put it and all the vessels thereof within a covering of badgers skins and shall put it upon a bar 11 And
turned himself and went out from Pharaoh 7 And Pharaohs servants said unto him How long shall this man be a snare unto us Let the men go that they may serve the LORD their God Knowest thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed 8 And Moses and Aaron were brought again unto Pharaoh and he said unto them Go serve the LORD your God but †Heb. who and who c. who are they that shall go 9 And Moses said We will go with our young and with our old with our sons and with our daughters with our flocks and with our herds will we go for we must hold a feast unto the LORD 10 And he said unto them Let the LORD be so with you as I will let you go and your little ones look to it for evil is before you 11 Not so go now ye that are men and serve the LORD for that you did desire And they were driven out from Pharaohs presence 12 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Stretch out thine hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts that they may come up upon the land of Egypt and eat every herb of the land even all that the hail hath left 13 And Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt and the LORD brought an east-wind upon the land all that day and all that night and when it was morning the east-wind brought the locusts 14 And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt and rested in all the coasts of Egypt very grievous were they before them there were no such locusts as they neither after them shall be such 15 For they covered the face of the whole earth so that the land was darkned and they did eat every herb of the land and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left and there remained not any green thing in the trees or in the herbs of the field through all the land of Egypt 16 ¶ Then Pharaoh †Heb. hastned to call called for Moses and Aaron in haste and he he said I have sinned against the LORD your God and against you 17 Now therefore forgive I pray thee my sin onely this once and intreat the LORD your God that he may take away from me this death onely 18 And he went out from Pharaoh and intreated the LORD 19 And the LORD turned a mighty strong west-wind which took away the locusts and †Heb. fastned cast them into the Red sea there remained not one locust in all the coasts of Egypt 20 But the LORD hardned Pharaohs heart so that he would not let the children of Israel go 21 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Stretch out thine hand toward heaven that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt †Heb. that one may feel darkness even darkness which may be felt 22 And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days 23 They saw not one another neither rose any from his place for three days * Wisd 18.1 but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings 24 ¶ And Pharaoh called unto Moses and said Go ye serve the LORD onely let your flocks and your herds be stayed let your little ones also go with you 25 And Moses said Thou must give †Heb. into our hands us also sacrifices and burnt-offerings that we may sacrifice unto the LORD our God 26 Our cattel also shall go with us there shall not an hoof be left behinde for thereof must we take to serve the LORD our God and we know not with what we must serve the LORD until we come thither 27 ¶ But the LORD hardned Pharaohs heart and he would not let them go 28 And Pharaoh said unto him Get thee from me take heed to thy self see my face no more for in that day thou seest my face thou shalt die 29 And Moses said Thou hast spoken well I will see thy face again no more CHAP. XI 1 Gods message to the Israelites to borrow jewels of their neighbours 4 Moses threatneth Pharaoh with the death of the first-born ANd the LORD said unto Moses Yet will I bring one plague more upon Pharaph and upon Egypt afterwards he will let you go hence when he shall let you go he shall surely thrust you out hence altogether 2 Speak now in the ears of the people and let every man borrow of his neighbour and every woman of her neighbour * Chap. â— 22 and 12 35. jewels of silver and jewels of gold 3 And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians Moreover the man * Eccluâ— 45.1 Moses was very great in the land of Egypt in the sight of Pharaohs servants and in the sight of the people 4 And Moses said Thus saith the LORD * Chap. 12.29 About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt 5 And all the first-born in the land of Egypt shall die from the first-born of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne even unto the first-born of the maid servant that is behinde the mill and all the first-born of beasts 6 And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt such as there was none like it nor shall be like it any more 7 But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue against man or beast that ye may know how that the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel 8 And all these thy servants shall come down unto me and bow down themselves unto me saying Get thee out and all the people †Heb. that is at thy feet that follow thee and after that I will go out and he went out from Pharaoh in †Heb. heat of anger a great anger 9 And the LORD said unto Moses Pharaoh shall not hearken unto you that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt 10 And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh and the LORD hardned Pharaohs heart so that he would not let the children of Israel go out of his land CHAP. XII 1 The beginning of the year is changed 3 The pass-over is instituted 11 The rice of the pass-over 15Vnleavened bread 29 The first-born are slain 31 The Israelites are driven out of the land 37 They come to Succoth 43 The ordinance of the pass-over ANd the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt saying 2 This moneth shall be unto you the beginning of moneths it shall be the first moneth of the year to you 3 ¶ Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel saying In the tenth day of this moneth they shall take to them every man a ‖ Or kid lamb according to the house of their fathers a lamb for an house 4 And if the hoâ—â—hold be too little for the lamb let him his neighbour next unto his
him that †Heb. doeth sinneth through ignorance both for him that is born amongst the children of Israel and for the stranger that sojourneth among them 30 ¶ But the soul that doeth ought †Heb. with an high hand presumptuously whether he be born in the land or a stranger the same reproacheth the LORD and that soul shall be cut off from among his people 31 Because he hath despised the word of the LORD and hath broken his commandment that soul shall utterly be cut off his iniquity shall be upon him 32 ¶ And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness they found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath-day 33 And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron and unto all the congregation 34 And they put him * Lev. 24.12 in ward because it was not declared what should be done to him 35 And the LORD said unto Moses The man shall be surely put to death all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp 36 And all the congregation brought him without the camp and stoned him with stones and he died as the LORD commanded Moses 37 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 38 Speak unto the children of Israel and bid * Deut. 22.12 Mat. 23.5 them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue 39 And it shall be unto you for a fringe that ye may look upon it and remember all the commandments of the LORD and do them and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes after which ye use to go a whoring 40 That ye may remember and do all my commandments and be holy unto your God 41 I am the LORD your God which brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God I am the LORD your God CHAP. XVI 1 The rebellion of Korah Dathan and Abiram 23 Moses separateth the people from the rebels tents 31 The earth swalloweth up Korah and a fire consumeth others 36 The censers are reserved to holy use 41 Fourteen thousand and seven hundred are slain by a plague for murmuring against Moses and Aaron 46 Aaron by incense stayeth the plague NOw * Ch. 27.3 Ecclus 45.18 Jude 11. Korah the son of Izhar the son of Kohath the son of Levi and Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab and On the son of Peleth sons of Reuben took men 2 And they rose up before Moses with certain of the children of Israel two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly * Ch. 26.9 famous in the congregation men of renown 3 And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron and said unto them †Heb. It is much for you Ye take too much upon you seeing all the congregation are holy everyone of them and the LORD is among them wherefore then lift you up your selves above the congregation of the LORD 4 And when Moses heard it he fell upon his face 5 And he spake unto Korah and unto all his company saying Even to morrow the LORD will shew who are his and who is holy and will cause him to come near unto him even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to come near unto him 6 This do take you censers Korah and all his company 7 And put fire therein and put incense in them before the LORD to morrow and it shall be that the man whom the LORD doth choose he shall be holy ye take too much upon you ye sons of Levi. 8 And Moses said unto Korah Hear I pray you ye sons of Levi 9 Seemeth it but a small thing unto you that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them 10 And he hath brought thee near to him and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee and seek ye the priesthood also 11 For which cause both thou and all thy company are gathered together against the LORD and what is Aaron that ye murmure against him 12 ¶ And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab which said We will not come up 13 Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land that floweth with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness except thou make thy self altogether a prince over us 14 Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land that floweth with milk and honey or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards wilt thou †Heb. here out put out the eyes of these men we will not come up 15 And Moses was very wroth and said unto the LORD * Gen. 4 4. Respect not thou their offering I have not taken one ass from them neither have I hurt one of them 16 And Moses said unto Korah Be thou and all thy company before the LORD thou and they and Aaron to morrow 17 And take every man his censer and put incense in them and bring ye before the LORD every man his censer two hundred and fifty censers thou also and Aaron each of you his censer 18 And they took every man his censer and put fire in them and said incense thereon and stood in the door of the tabernacle of the congregation with Moses and Aaron 19 And Korah gathered all the congregation against them unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the congregation 20 And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron saying 21 Separate your selves from among this congregation that I may consume them in a moment 22 And they fell upon their faces and said O God the God of the spirits of all flesh shall one man sin and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation 23 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 24 Speak unto the congregation saying Get you up from about the taberlacle of Korah Dathan and Abiram 25 And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram and the elders of Israel followed him 26 And he spake unto the congregation saying Depart I pray you from the tents of these wicked men and touch nothing of theirs lest ye be consumed in all their sins 27 So they gat up from the tabernacle of Korah Dathan and Abiram on every side and Dathan and Abiram came out and stood in the door of their tents and their wives and their sons and their little children 28 And Moses said Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works for I have not done them of mine own minde 29 If these men die †Heb. as every man dieth the common death of all men or if they be visited after the visitation of all men then
have mercy upon him and to our God for †Heb. he will multiply to pardon he will abundantly pardon 8 ¶ For my thoughts are not your thoughts neither are your ways my ways saith the LORD 9 For as the heavens are higher then the earth so are my ways higher then your ways and my thoughts then your thoughts 10 For as the rain cometh down and the snow from heaven and returneth not thither but watereth the earth and maketh it bring forth and bud that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater 11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth it shall not return unto me void but it shall accomplish that which I please and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it 12 For ye shall go out with joy and be led forth with peace the mountains and the hills shall * Ch. 35. â— break forth before you into singing and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands 13 In stead of the thorn shall come up the fir-tree and in stead of the brier shall come up the myrtle-tree and it shall be to the LORD for a name for an everlasting signe that shall not be cut off CHAP. LVI 1 The prophet exhorteth to sanctification 3 He promiseth it shall be general without respect of persons 9 He inveigheth against blinde watchmen THus saith the LORD Keep ye ‖ Or equity judgement and do justice for my salvation is near to come and my righteousness to be revealed 2 Blessed is the man that doeth this and the son of man that layeth hold on it that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it and keepeth his hand from doing any evil 3 ¶ Neither let the son of the stranger that hath joyned himself to the LORD speak saying The LORD hath utterly separated me from his people neither let the eunuch say Behold I am a drie tree 4 For thus saith the LORD unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths and choose the things that please me and take hold of my covenant 5 Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better then of sons and of daughters I will give them an everlasting name that shall not be cut off 6 Also the sons of the stranger that joyn themselves to the LORD to serve him and to love the name of the LORD to be his servants every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it and taketh hold of my covenant 7 Even them will I * Ch. 2.2 bring to my holy mountain and make them joyful in my house of prayer their burnt-offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar for * Mat. 21.13 Mar. 11.17 Lu. 19.46 mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people 8 The Lord GOD which gathereth the outcasts of Israel saith Yet will I gather others to him †Heb. to his gathered besides those that are gathered unto him 9 ¶ All ye beasts of the field come to devour yea all ye beasts in the forest 10 His watchmen are blinde they are all ignorant they are all dumb dogs they cannot bark ‖ Or dreaming or talking in their sleep sleeping lying down loving to slumber 11 Yea they are †Heb. strong of appetite greedy dogs which †Heb. know not to be satisfied can never have enough and they are shepherds that cannot understand they all look to their own way every one for his gain from his quarter 12 Come ye say they I will fetch wine and we will fill our selves with strong drink and to morrow shall be as this day and much more abundant CHAP. LVII 1 The blessed death of the righteous 3 God reproveth the Jews for their whorish idolatry 13 He giveth evangelical promises to the penitent THE righteous perisheth and no man layeth it to heart and †Heb. men of kindness or godliness * Ps 12.1 Mic. 7.2 merciful men are taken away none considering that the righteous is taken away ‖ Or from that which is evil from the evil to come 2 He shall ‖ Or go in peace enter into peace they shall rest in their beds each one walking ‖ Or before him in his uprightness 3 ¶ But draw near hither ye sons of the sorceress the seed of the adulterer and the whore 4 Against whom do ye sport your selves against whom make ye a wide mouth and draw out the tongue are ye not children of transgression a seed or falshood 5 Enflaming your selves ‖ Or among the oaks with idols * 2 Kin. 16.4 under every green tree slaying the children in the valleys under the clifts of the rocks 6 Among the smooth stones of the stream is thy portion they they are thy lot even to them hast thou poured a drink-offering thou hast offered a meat-offering Should I receive comfort in these 7 Upon a lofty and high mountain hast thou set thy bed even thither wentest thou up to offer sacrifice 8 Behinde the doors also and the posts hast thou set up thy remembrance for thou hast discovered thy self to another then me and art gone up thou hast enlarged thy bed and ‖ Or hewed it for thy self larger then theirs made thee a covenant with them thou lovedst their bed ‖ Or thou providest room where thou sawest it 9 And ‖ Or thou respectedst the king thou wentest to the king with ointment and didst increase thy perfumes and didst send thy messengers far off and didst debase thy self even unto hell 10 Thou art wearied in the greatness of thy way yet saidst thou not There is no hope thou hast found the ‖ Or diving life of thine hand therefore thou wast not grieved 11 And of whom hast thou been afraid or feared that thou hast lied and hast not remembred me nor laid it to thy heart have not I held my peace even of old and thou fearest me not 12 I will declare thy righteousness and thy works for they shall not profit thee 13 ¶ When thou criest let thy companies deliver thee but the wind shall carry them all away vanity shall take them but he that putteth his trust in me shall posses the land and shall inherit my holy mountain 14 And shall say * Chap. â—0 3 〈◊〉 62.10 Cast ye up cast ye up prepare the way taken up the stumbling-block out of the way of my people 15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity whose name is Holy I dwell in the high and holy place with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit to revive the spirit of the humble and to revive the heart of the contrite ones 16 For I will not contend for ever neither will I be always wroth for the spirit should fail before me and the souls which I have made 17 For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth and smote him

XIX 1Vnder the type of breaking a potters vessel is foreshewed the desolation of the Jews for their sins THus saith the LORD Go and get a potters earthen bottle and take of the ancients of the people and of the ancients of the priests 2 And go forth unto the valley of the son of Hinnom which is by the entry of †Heb. the sun-gate the east-gate and proclaim there the words that I shall tell thee 3. And say Hear ye the word of the LORD O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Behold I will bring evil upon this place the which whosoever heareth his ears shall * 1 Sam. 3.11 tingle 4 Because they have forsaken me and have estranged this place and have burnt incense in it unto other gods whom neither they nor their fathers have known nor the kings of Judah and have filled this place with the bloud of innocents 5 They have built also the high places of Baal to burn their sons with fire for burnt-offerings unto Baal * Ch. 7.31 32. which I commanded not nor spake it neither came it into my minde 6 Therefore behold the days come saith the LORD that this place shall no more be called Tophet nor the valley of the son of Hinnom but the valley of slaughter 7 And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies and by the hands of them that seek their lives and their * Ch. 7.33 and 16.4 carcases will I give to be meat for the fowls of the heaven and for the beasts of the earth 8 And I will make this city * Ch. 18.16 and 49.13 and 50.13 desolate and an hissing every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof 9 And I will cause them to eat the * Lev. 26.29 Deu. 28.53 Lam. 4.10 flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend in the siege and straitness wherewith their enemies and they that seek their lives shall straiten them 10 Then shalt thou break the bottle in the sight of the men that go with thee 11 And shalt say unto them Thus saith the LORD of hosts Even so will I break this people and this city as one breaketh a potters vessel that cannot †Heb. be healed be made whose again and they shall * Ch. 7.32 bury them in Tophet till there be no place to bury 12 Thus will I do unto this place saith the LORD and to the inhabitants thereof and even make this city as Tophet 13 And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah shall be defiled as the place of Tophet because of all the houses upon whose * Ch. 32.29 roofs they have burnt incense unto all the host of heaven and have poured out drink-offerings unto other gods 14 Then came Jeremiah from Tophet whither the LORD had sent him to prophesie and he stood in the court of the LORDS house and said to all the people 15 Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Behold I will bring upon this city and upon all her towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it because they have hardned their necks that they might not hear my words CHAP. XX. 1 Pashur smiting Jeremiah receiveth a new name and a fearful doom 7 Jeremiah complaineth of contempt 10 of treachery 14 and of his birth NOw Pashur the son of * 1 Chr. 24.14 Immer the priest who was also chief governour in the house of the LORD heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things 2 Then Pashur smote Jeremiah the prophet and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin which was by the house of the LORD 3 And it came to pass on the morrow that Pashur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks Then said Jeremiah unto him The LORD hath not called thy name Pashur but ‖ That is Fear

Judah was carried away captive out of his own land 28 This is the people whom Nebuchadrezzar carried away captive in the seventh year three thousand Jews and three and twenty 29 In the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar he carried away captive from Jerusalem eight hundred thirty and two †Heb. souls persons 30 In the three and twentieth year of Nebuchadrezzar Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away captive of the Jews seven hundred fourty and five persons all the persons were four thousand and six hundred 31 ¶ And it came to pass in the seven and thirtieth year of the captivity of Jehosachin king of Judah in the twelfth moneth in the five and twentieth day of the moneth that Evil-merodach king of Babylon in the first year of his reign lilted up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah and brought him forth out of prison 32 And spake †Heb. good things with him kindly unto him and set his throne above the throne of the kings that were with him in Babylon 33 And changed his prison-garments and he did continually eat bread before him all the days of his life 34 And for his diet there was a continual diet given him of the king of Babylon †Heb. the matter of the day in his day every day a portion until the day of his death all the days of his life ¶ The LAMENTATIONS of JEREMIAH CHAP. 1. 1 The miserable estate of Jerusalem by reason of her sin 12 She complaineth of her grief 18 and confesseth Gods judgement to be righteous HOw doth the city sit solitary that was full of people how is she become as a widow she that was great among the nations and princess among the provinces how is she become tributary 2 She * Jer. 13.17 weepeth sore in the * Job 7.3 night and her tears are on her cheeks among all her lovers she hath none to comfort her all her friends have dealt treacherously with her they are become her enemies 3 Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction and †Heb. for the treateâ— of servitude because of great servitude she dwelleth among the heathen she findeth no rest all her persecutours overtook her between the straits 4 The ways of Zion do mourn because none come to the solemn feasts all her gates are desolate her priests sigh her virgins are afflicted and she is in bitterness 5 Her adversaries * Deu. 28.13 14. are the chief her enemies prosper for the LORD hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions her * Jer. 52.28 children are gone into captivity before the enemy 6 And from the daughter of Zion all her beauty is departed her princes are become like harts that finde no pasture and they are gone without strength before the pursuer 7 Jerusalem remembred in the days of her affliction and of her miseries all her ‖ Or desirable pleasant things that she had in the days of old when her people fell into the hand of the enemy and none did help her the adversaries saw her and did mock at her sabbaths 8 Jerusalem hath grievously sinned therefore she †Heb. is become 〈◊〉 removing or wandering is removed all that honoured her despise her because they have seen her nakedness yea she sigheth and turneth backward 9 Her filthiness is in her skirts she remembreth not her last end therefore she came down wonderfully she had no comforter O LORD behold my affliction for the enemy hath magnified himself 10 The adversary hath spread out his hand upon all her ‖ Or desirable pleasant things for she hath are wreathed and come up upon my neck he hath made my strength to fall the Lord hath delivered me into their hands from whom I am notable to rise up 15 The Lord hath troden under foot all my mighty men in the midst of me he hath called an assembly against me to crush my young men the Lord hath troden ‖ Or the wine-press of the viram c. the virgin the daughter of Judah as in a wine-press 16 For CHAP. XXIV 1Vnder the parable of a boâ—ling pot â—is shewed the irrevocable destruction of Jerusalem 15 By the signe of Ezekiel not mourning for the death of his wife 19 〈◊〉 shewed the calamity of the Jews to be beyond all sorrow AGain in the ninth year in the tenth moneth in the tenth day of the moneth the word of the LORD came unto me saying 2 Son of man write thee the name of the day even of this same day the king of Babylon set himself against Jerusalem this same day 3 And utter a parable unto the rebellious house and say unto them Thus saith the Lord GOD Set on a pot set it on and also pour water into it 4 Gather the pieces thereof into it even every good piece the thigh and the shoulder fill it with the choice bones 5 Take the choice of the flock and ‖ Or beaâ— burn also the bones under it and make it boyl well and let them seethe the bones of it therein 6 ¶ Wherefore thus saith the Lord GOD Wo to the bloudy city to the pot whose seum is therein and whose scum is not gone out of it bring it out piece by piece let no lot fall upon it 7 For her bloud is in the midst of her she set it upon the top of a rock she poured it not upon the ground to cover it with dust 8 That it might cause sury to come up to take vengeance I have set her bloud upon the top of a rock that it should not be covered 9 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD * Nah. 3.1 Hab. 2.12 Wo to the bloudy city I will even make the pile for fire great 10 Heap on wood kindle the fire consume the flesh and spice it well and let the bones be burnt 11 Then set it empty upon the coals thereof that the brass of it may be hot and may burn and that the filthiness of it may be molten in it that the scum of it may be consumed 12 She hath wearied her self with lies and her great scum went not forth out of her her scum shall be in the fire 13 In thy filthiness is lewdness because I have purged thee and thou wast not purged thou shalt not be purged from thy filthiness any more till I have caused my fury to rest upon thee 14 I the LORD have spoken it it shall come to pass and I will do it I will not go back neither will I spare neither will I repent according to thy ways and according to thy doings shall they judge thee saith the Lord GOD. 15 ¶ Also the word of the LORD came unto me saying 16 Son of man behold I take away from thee the desire of thine eyes with a stroke yet neither shalt thou mourn nor weep neither shall thy tears †Heb. 〈◊〉 run down 17 †Heb. le sileve Forbear to cry make no mourning for the dead binde the tire of thine head upon thee and put on thy shoes upon thy feet and cover not thy †Heb. upper lip and â—over 22. lips and eat not the bread of men 18 So I spake unto the people in the morning and at even my wife died and I did in the morning as I was commanded 19 ¶ And the people said unto me Wilt thou not tell us what these things are to us that thou doest so 20 Then I answered them The word of the LORD came unto me saying 21 Speak unto the house of Israel Thus saith the Lord GOD Behold I will profane my sanctuary the excellency of your strength the desire of your eyes and †Heb. the pitâ— of your soul that which your soul pitieth and your sons and your daughters whom ye have left shall fall by the sword 22 And ye shall do as I have done ye shall not cover your lips nor eat the bread of men 23 And your tires shall be upon your heads and your shoes upon your feet ye shall not mourn nor weep but ye shall pine away for your iniquities and mourn one towards another 24 Thus Ezekiel is unto you a signe according to all that he hath done shall ye do and when this cometh ye shall know that I am the Lord GOD. 25 Also thou son of man shall it not be in the day when I take from them their strength the joy of their glory the desire of their eyes and †Heb. the listing up of their sâ—ul that whereupon they set their minds their sons and their daughters 26 That he that escapeth in that day shall come unto thee to cause thee to hear it with thine ears 27 In that day shall thy mouth be opened to him which is escaped and thou shalt speak and be no more dumb and thou shalt be a signe unto them and they shall know that I am the LORD CHAP. XXV 1 Gods venâ—eance for their insolency against the Jews upon the Ammonites 8 upon Moah and Seir 12 upon Edom 15 and upon the Philistines THe word of the LORD came again unto me saying 2 Son of man set thy face * Jer. 49.1 c. against the Ammonites and prophesie against them 3 And say unto the Ammonites Hear the word of the Lord GOD Thus saith the Lord GOD Because thou saidst Aha against my sanctuary when it was profaned and against the land of Israel when it was desolate and against the house of Judah when they went into captivity 4 Behold therefore I will deliver thee to the †Heb. children men of the east for a possession and they shall set their palaces in thee and make their dwellings in thee they shall eat thy fruit and they shall drink thy milk 5 And I will make Rabbah a stable for camels and the Ammonites a couching-place for flocks and ye shall know that I am the LORD 6 For thus saith the Lord
killeth those that sought for him THen came up John from Gazara and told Simon his father what Cendebeus had done 2 Wherefore Simon called his two eldest sons Judas and John said unto them I my brethren and my fathers house have ever from our youth unto this day fought against the enemies of Israel things have prospered so well in our hands that we have delivered Israel oftentimes 3 But now I am old and ye by Gods mercy are of a sufficient age be ye in stead of me and my brother and go and fight for our nation and the help from heaven be with you 4 So he chose out of the countrey twenty thousand men of war with horsmen who went out against Cendebeus rested that night at Modin 5 And when as they rose in the morning and went into the plain behold a mighty great host both of footmen and hors-men came against them howbeit there was a water-brook betwixt them 6 So he and his people pitched over against them and when he saw that the people were afraid to go over the water-brook he went first over himself and then the men seeing him passed through after him 7 That done he divided his men and set the hors-men in the midst of the footmen for the enemies hors-men were very many 8 Then sounded they with the holy trumpets whereupon Cendebeus and his host were put to flight so that many of them were slain and the remnant gat them to the strong hold 9 At that time was Judas Johns brother wounded but John still followed after them until he came to Cedron which Cendebeus had built 10 ‖ Or Which when be bad set on fire they fled unto the towres in the fields of Azotus and there were slain c. So they fled even unto the towres in the fields of Azotus wherefore he burnt it with fire so that there were slain of them about two thousand men Afterward he returned into the land of Judea in peace 11 Moreover in the plain of Jericho was Ptolemeus the son of Abubus made captain and he had abundance of silver and gold 12 For he was the high priests son in law 13 Wherefore his heart being lifted up he thought to get the countrey to himself and thereupon consulted deceitfully against Simon and his sons to destroy them 14 Now Simon was visiting the cities that were in the countrey and taking care for the good ordering of them at which time he came down himself to Jericho with his sons Mattathias and Judas in the hundred threescore and seventh year in the eleventh moneth called Sabat 15 Where the son of Abubus receiving them deceitfully into a little hold called Ducus which he had built made them a great banquet howbeit he had hid men there 16 So when Simon and his sons had drunk largely Ptolemee and his men rose up and took their weapons and came upon Simon into the banqueting-place and slew him and his two sons and certain of his servants 17 In which doing he committed a great treachery and recompensed evil for good 18 Then Ptolemee wrote these things and sent to the king that he should send him an host to aid him and he would deliver him the countrey and cities 19 He sent others also to Gazara to kill John and unto the †Gr. captains of thousands tribunes he sent letters to come unto him that he might give them silver and gold and rewards 20 And others he sent to take Jerusalem and the mountain of the temple 21 Now one had run afore to Gazara and told John that his father brethren were slain quoth he Ptolemee hath sent to slay thee also 22 Hereof when he heard he was sore astonished So he laid hands on them that were come to destroy him and slew them for he knew that they sought to make him away 23 As concerning the rest of the acts of John and his wars and worthy deeds which he did and the building of the walls which he made and his doings 24 Behold these are written in the Chronicles of his priesthood from the time he was made high priest after his father ¶ The second Book of MACCABEES CHAP. I. 1 A letter of the Jews from Jerusalem to them of Egypt to thank God for the death of Antiochus 19 Of the fire that was bidden in the pit 24 The trayer of Neemias THe brethren the Jews that be at Jerusalem and in the land of Judea wish unto the brethren the Jews that are throughout Egypt health and peace 2 God be gracious unto you and remember his covenant that he made with Abraham Isaac and Jacob his faithful servants 3 And give you all an heart to serve him and to do his will with a good courage and a willing minde 4 And open your hearts in his law and commandments and send you peace 5 And hear your prayers and he at one with you and never forsake you in time of trouble 6 And now we be here praying for you 7 What time as Demetrius reigned in the hundred threescore and ninth year we the Jews wrote unto you in the extremity of trouble that came upon us in those years from the time that Jason and his company revolted from the holy land and kingdom 8 And burnt the porch and shed innocent bloud then we prayed unto the Lord and were heard we offered also sacrifices and fine flour and lighted the lamps and set forth the loaves 9 And now see that ye keep the feast of * Lev. 23. â—â— tabernacles in the moneth Casleu 10 In the hundred fourscore and eighth year the people that were at Jerusalem and in Judea and the council and Judas sent greeting and health unto Aristobulus king Ptolemeus master who was of the stock of the anointed priests and to the Jews that were in Egypt 11 Insomuch as God hath delivered us from great perils we thank him highly as having been in battel against a king 12 For he cast them out that fought within the holy city 13 For when the leader was come into Persia and the army with him that seemed invincible they were slain in the temple of Nanea by the deceit of Naneas priests 14 For Antiochus as though he would marry her came into the place and his friends that were with him to receive money in name of a dowry 15 Which when the priests of Nanea had set forth and he was entred with a small company into the compass of the temple they shut the temple as soon as Antiochus was come in 16 And opening a privie door of the roof they threw stones like thunderbolts and stroke down the captain hewed them in pieces smote off their heads and cast them to those that were without 17 Blessed be our God in all things who hath delivered up the ungodly 18 Therefore whereas we are now purposed to keep the purification of the temple upon the five and twentieth day of the moneth * Lev.

Maccabeus and his company the Lord guiding them recovered the temple and the city 2 But the altars which the heathen had built in the open street and also the chappels they pulled down 3 And having cleansed the temple they made another altar and striking stones they took fire out of them and offered a sacrifice after two years and set forth incense and lights and shew-bread 4 When that was done they fell flat down and besought the Lord that they might come no more into such troubles but if they sinned any more against him that he himself would chasten them with mercy and that they might not be delivered unto the blasphemous and barbarous nations 5 Now upon the same day that the strangers profaned the temple on the very same day it was cleansed again even the five and twentieth day of the same moneth which is Casseu 6 And they kept eight days with gladness as in the feast of the tabernacles remembring that not long afore they had held the feast of the tabernacles when as they wandred in the mountains and dens like beasts 7 Therefore they bare branches and fair boughs and palms also and sang psalms unto him that had given them good success in cleansing his place 8 They ordained also by a common statute and decree That every year those days should be kept of the whole nation of the Jews 9 And this was the end of Antiochus called Epiphanes 10 Now will we declare the acts of Antiochus Eupator who was the son of this wicked man gathering briefly the calamities of the wars 11 So when he was come to the crown he set one Lyâ—ias over the affairs of his realm and appointed him chief governour of Celosyria and Phenice 12 For Ptolemeus that was called Macron choosing rather to do justice unto the Jews for the wrong that had been done unto them endeavoured to continue peace with them 13 Whereupon being accused of the kings friends before Eupator and called traitour at every word because he had left Cyprus that Philometor had committed unto him and departed to Antiochus Epiphanes ‖ Or and not bearing his authority as it becometh a noble man and seeing that he was in no honourable place he was so discouraged that he poisoned himself and died 14 But when Gorgias was governour of the ‖ Or or strong places holds he hired souldiers and nourished was continually with the Jews 15 And there withal the Idumeans having gotten into their hands the most commodious holds kept the Jews occupied receiving those that were banished from Jerusalem they went about to nourish war 16 Then they that were with Maccabeus made supplication and besought God that he would be their helper and so they ran with violence upon the strong holds of the Idumeans 17 And assaulting them strongly they wan the holds and kept off all that fought upon the wall and slew all that fell into their hands and killed no fewer then twenty thousand 18 And because certain who were no less then nine thousand were fled together into two very strong castles having all manner of things convenient to sustain the siege 19 Maccabeus left Simon and Joseph and Zaccheus also and them that were with him who were enow to besiege them and departed himself unto those places which more needed his help 20 Now ‖ Or Simoâ—â— they that were with Simon being led with covetousness were perswaded for money through certain of those that were in the castle and took seventy thousand drachmes and let some of them escape 21 But when it was told Maccabeus what was done he called the governours of the people together and accused those men that they had sold their brethren for money let their enemies free to fight against them 22 So he slew those that were found traitours and immediately took the two castles 23 And having good success with his weapons in all things he took in hand he slew in the two holds more then twenty thousand 24 Now Timotheus whom the Jews had overcome before when he had gathered a great multitude of forein forces and horses out of Asia not a few came as though he would take Jury by force of arms 25 But when he drew near ‖ Or Maccabeus and they that were with him they that were with Maccabeus turned themselves to pray unto God and sprinkled earth upon their heads and girded their loyns with sack â—loth 26 And fell down at the foot of the altar and besought him to be merciful to them and to be * Deut. 28. an enemy to their enemies and an adversary to their adversaries as the law declareth 27 So after the prayer they took their weapons and went on further from the city and when they drew near to their enemies they kept by themselves 28 Now the sun being newly risen they joyned both together the one part having together with their vertue their refuge also unto the Lord for a ‖ Or warrant or surety pledge of their success and victory the other side making their rage leader of their battel 29 But when the battel waxed strong there appeared unto the enemies from heaven five comely men upon horses with bridles of gold and two of them led the Jews 30 And took Maccabeus betwixt them and covered him on every side with their weapons and kept him safe but shot arrows and lightnings against the enemies so that being confounded with blindness and full of trouble they were killed 31 And there were slain of footmen twenty thousand and five hundred and six hundred hors-men 32 As for Timotheus himself he fled into a very strong hold called Gazara where Chereas was governour 33 But they that were with Maccabeus laid siege against the fortress couragâ—ouâ—ly four days 34 And they that were within trusting to the strength of the place blasphemed exceedingly and uttered wicked words 35 Nevertheless upon the fifth day early twenty young men of Maccabeus company inflamed with anger because of the blasphemies assaulted the wall manly with a fierce courage killed all that they met withal 36 Others likewise ascending after them whiles they were busied with them that were within burnt the towres
fathers graves 40 Now under the coats of every one that was slain they found things consecrated to the idols of the Jamnites which is forbidden the Jews by * Deut. â—7 7 the law Then every man saw that this was the cause wherefore they were slain 41 All men therefore praising the Lord the righteous Judge who had opened the things that were hid 42 Betook themselves unto prayer and besought him that the sin committed might wholly be put out of remembrance Besides that noble Judas exhorted the people to keep themselves from sin forsomuch as they saw before their eyes the things that came to pass for the sins of those that were slain 43 And when he had made a gathering throughout the company to the sum of two thousand drachnies of silver he sent it to Jerusalem to offer a sin offering doing therein very well and honestly in that he was mindful of the resurrection 44 For if he had not hoped that they that were slain should have risen again it had been superfluous and vain to pray for the dead 45 And also in that he perceived that there was great favour said up for those that died godly It was an holy and good thought Whereupon he made a reconciliation for the dead that they might be delivered from sin CHAP. XIII 1 Eupator invadeth Judea 15 Judas by night slayeth many 18 Eupators purpose is defeated 23 He maketh peace with Judas IN the hundred fourty and ninth year it was told Judas that Antiochus Eupator was coming with a great power into Judea 2 And with him Lysias his protectour and ruler of his affairs having either of them a Grecian power of footmen an hundred ten thousand and hors-men five thousand and three hundred and elephants two and twenty and three hundred chariots armed with hooks 3 Menelaus also joyned himself with them and with great dissimulation encouraged Antiochus not for the safeguard of the countrey but because he thought to have been made governour 4 But the King of kings moved Antiochus minde against this wicked wretch and Lysias informed the king that this man was the cause of all mischief so that the king commanded to bring him unto Berea and to put him to death as the manner is in that place 5 Now there was in that place a towre of fifty cubits high full of ashes and it had a round instrument which on every side hanged down into the ashes 6 And whosoever was condemned of sacriledge or had committed any other grievous crime there did all men thrust him unto death 7 Such a death it hapned that wicked man to die not having so much as burial in the earth and that most justly 8 For insomuch as he had committed many sins about the altar whose fire and ashes were holy he received his death in ashes 9 Now the king came with a barbarous and haughty minde to do far worse to the Jews then had been done in his fathers time 10 Which things when Judas perceived he commanded the multitude to call upon the Lord night and day that if ever at any other time he would now also help them being at the point to be put from their law from their countrey and from the holy temple 11 And that he would not suffer the people that ‖ Or bad bad a little respite had even now been but a little refreshed to be in subjection to the blasphemous nations 12 So when they had all done this together and besought the merciful Lord with weeping and fasting and lying flat upon the groud three days long Judas having exhorted them commanded they should be in a readiness 13 And Judas being apart with the elders determined before the kings host should enter into Judea and get the city to go forth and try the matter in fight by the help of the Lord. 14 So when he had committed all to the ‖ Or Lord. Creatour of the world and exhorted his souldiers to fight manfully even unto death for the laws the temple the city the countrey the common-wealth he camped by Modin 15 And having given the watch-word to them that were about him Victory is of God with the most valiant choice young men he went in into the kings tent by night slew in the camp about four thousand men and the chiefest of the elephants with all that were upon him 16 And at last they filled the camp with sear and tumult and departed with good success 17 This was done in the break of the day because the protection of the Lord did help him 18 Now when the king had taken a taste of the manliness of the Jews he went about to take the holds by policy 19 And marched towards Bethsura which was a strong hold of the Jews but he was put to flight failed and lost of his men 20 For Judas had conveyed unto them that were in it such things as were necessary 21 But Rhodochus who was in the Jews host disclosed the secrets to the enemies therefore he was sought out and when they had gotten him they put him in prison 22 The king treated with them in Bethsura the second time gave his hand took theirs departed sought with Judas was over come 23 Heard that Philip who was leâ—t over the affairs in Antioch ‖ Or rebelled was desperately bent confounded intreated the Jews submitted himself and sware to all equal conditions agreed with them and offered sacrifice honoured the temple and dealt kindly with the place 24 And accepted well of Maccabeus made him principal governour from Ptolemais unto the Gerrhenians 25 Came to Ptolemais the people there were grieved for the covenants for they stormed because they would make their covenants void 26 Lysias went up to the judgment-seat said as much as could be in defence of the cause perswaded pacified made them well affected returned to Antioch Thus it went touching the kings coming departing CHAP. XIV 6 Aleimus accuseth Judas 18 Nicanor maketh peace with Judas 39 He seeketh to take Bazis 46 who to escape his bands killeth himself AFter three years was Judas informed that Demetrius the son of Seleucus having entred by the haven of Tripolis with a great power and navy 2 Had taken the countrey and killed Antiochus and Lysias his protectour 3 Now one Alcimus who had been high priest and had defiled himself wilfully in the times of their mingling with the Gentiles seeing that by no means he could save himself nor have any more access to the holy altar 4 Came to king Demetrius in the hundred and one and fiftieth year presenting unto him a crown of gold and a palm and also of the boughs which were ‖ Or thought to be of the temple used solemnly in the temple so that day he held his peace 5 Howbeit having gotten opportunity to further his foolish enterprise and being called into counsel by Demetrius and asked how the Jews stood affected and what they intended he answered thereunto
Is it lawful on the sabbath-days to do good or to do evil to save life or to destroy it 10 And looking round about upon them all he said unto the man Stretch forth thy hand And he did so and his hand was restored whole as the other 11 And they were filled with madness and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus 12 And it came to pass in those days that he went out into a mountain to sea-coast of Tyre and Sidon which came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases 18 And they that were vexed with unclean spirits they were healed 19 And the whole multitude sought to touch him for there went vertue out of him and healed them all 20 ¶ And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples and said * Matth. 5.3 Blessed be ye poor for yours is the kingdom of God 21 Blessed are ye that and digged deep and laid the foundation on a rock and when the floud arose the stream beat vehemently upon that house and could not shake it for it was founded upon a rock 49 But he that heareth and doeth not Is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth against which the stream did beat vehemently and immediately it fell and the ruine of that house was great CHAP. VII 1 Christ findeth a greater faith in the centurion a Gentile then in any of the Jews 10 healeth his servant being absent 11 raiseth from death the widows son at Nain 19 answereth Johns messengers with the declaration of his miracles 24 testifieth to the people what opinion he held of John 30 inveigheth against the Jews who with neither the manners of John nor of Jesus could he won 36 and sheweth by occasion of Mary Magdalene how he is a friend to sinners not to maintain them in sins but to forgive them their sins upon their faith and repentance NOw when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people * Matth. 8.5 he entred into Capernaum 2 And a certain centurions servant who was dear unto him was sick and ready to die 3 And when

II. 1 Christ turneth water into wine 12 departeth into Capernaum and to Jerusalem 14 where he purgeth the temple of buyers and sellers 19 He foretelleth his death and resurrection 23 Many beleeved because of his miracles but he would not trust himself with them ANd the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee and the mother of Jesus was there 2 And both Jesus was called and his disciples to the marriage 3 And when they wanted wine the mother of Jesus saith unto him They have no wine 4 Jesus saith unto her Woman what have I to do with thee mine hour is not yet come 5 His mother saith unto the servants Whatsoever he saith unto you do it 6 And there were set there six water-pots of stone after the manner of the purifying of the Jews containing two or three firkins apiece 7 Jesus saith unto them Fill the water-pots with water And they filled them up to the brim 8 And he saith unto them Draw out now and bear unto the governour of the feast And they bare it 9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine and knew not whence it was but the servants which drew the water knew the governour of the feast called the bridegroom 10 And saith unto him Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine and when men have well drunk then that which is worse but thou hast kept the good wine until now 11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee and manifested forth his glory and his disciples beleeved on him 12 ¶ After this he went down to Capernaum he and his mother and his brethren his disciples and they continued there not many days 13 ¶ And the Jews pass-over was at hand Jesus went up to Jerusalem 14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves and the changers of money sitting 15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords he drove them all out of the temple and the sheep and the oxen and poured out the changers money and overthrew the tables 16 And said unto them that sold doves Take these things hence make not my Fathers house an house of merchandise 17 And his disciples remembred that it was written * Psal 69.9 The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up 18 ¶ Then answered the Jews and said unto him what signe shewest thou unto us seeing that thou doest these things 19 Jesus answered and said unto them * Mat. 26.61 Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up 20 Then said the Jews Fourty and six years was this temple in building and wilt thou rear it up in three days 21 But he spake of the temple of his body 22 When therefore he was risen from the dead his disciples remembred that he had said this unto them and they beleeved the scripture and the word which Jesus had said 23 ¶ Now when he was in Jerusalem at the pass-over in the feast day many beleeved in his name when they saw the miracles which he did 24 But Jesus did not commit himself unto them because he knew all men 25 And needed not that any should testifie of man for he knew what was in man CHAP. III. 1 Christ teacheth Nicodemus the necessity of regeneration 14 of faith in his death 16 The great love of God towards the world 18 Contemnation for unbelief 23 The baptism witness and doctrine of John concerning Christ THere was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus a ruler of the Jews 2 The same came to Jesus by night and said unto him Rabbi we know that thou art a teacher come from God for no man can do these miracles that thou doest except God be with him 3 Jesus answered and said unto him Verily verily I say unto thee Except a man be born ‖ Or from above again he cannot see the kingdom of God 4 Nicodemus saith unto him How can a man be born when he is old can he enter the second time into his mothers womb be born 5 Jesus answered Verily verily I say unto thee Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee Ye must be born ‖ Or from above again 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth and thou hearest the sound thereof but canst not tell whence it cometh and whither it goeth so is every one that is born of the Spirit 9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him How can these things be 10 Jesus answered and said unto him Art thou a master of Israel and knowest not these things 11 Verily verily I say unto thee We speak that we do know and testifie that we have seen and ye receive not our witness 12 If I have told you earthly things and ye believe not how shall ye believe if I tell you of heavenly things 13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven but he that came down from heaven even the Son of man which is in heaven 14 ¶ * Numb 21.9 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness even so must the Son of man be lifted up 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have eternal life 16 ¶ * 1 John 4.9 For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life 17
from beneath I am from above ye are of this world I am not of this world 24 I said therefore unto you that ye shall die in your sins for if ye beleeve not that I am he ye shall die in your sins 25 Then said thâ—y unto him Who art thou And Jesus saith unto them Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning 26 I have many things to say and to judge of you but he that sent me is true and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him 27 They understood not that he spake to them of the Father 28 Then said â—esâ—â— unto them When ye haâ—e lift up the Son of man then shall ye know that I am he and that I do nothing of myself but as my Father hath taught me I speak these things 29 And he that sent me is with me the Father hath not left me alone for I do always those things that please him 30 As he sâ—ake these words many beleeved on him Then said Jesus to those Jews which beleeved on him If ye continue in my word then are ye my disciples indeed 32 And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free 33 ¶ They answered him We be Abrahams seed and were never in bondage to any man how sayest thou Ye shall be made free 34 Jesu answered them Verily verily I say unto you * Rom. 6.20 1 Pet. 2.19 Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin 35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever but the Son abideth ever 36 If the Son therefore shall make you free ye shall be free indeed 37 I know that ye are Abrahams seed but ye seek to kill me because my word hath no place in you 38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father and ye do that which ye have seen with your father 39 They answered and said unto him Abraham is our father Jesus saith unto them If ye were Abrahams children ye would do the works of Abraham 40 But now ye seek to kill me a man that hath told you the truth which I have heard of God this did not Abraham 41 Ye do the deeds of your father Then said they to him We be not born of fornication we have one Father even God 42 Jesus said unto them If God were your Father ye would love me for I proceeded forth and came from God neither came I of my self but he sent me 43 Why do ye not understand my speech even because ye cannot hear my word 44 * 1 John 3.8 Ye are of your father the devil and the lusts of your father ye will do he was a murderer from the beginning and abode not in the truth because there is no truth in him When he speaketh a lie he speaketh of his own for he is a liar and the father of it 45 And because I tell you the truth ye beleeve me not 46 Which of you convinceth me of sin And if I say the truth why do ye not beleeve me 47 * 1 John 4.6 He that is of God heareth Gods words ye therefore hear them not because ye are not of God 48 Then answered the Jews and said unto him Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan and hast a devil 49 Jesus answered I have not a devil but I honour my Father and ye do dishonour me 50 And I seek not mine own glory there is one that seeketh judgeth 51 Verily verily I say unto you If a man keep my saying he shall never see death 52 Then said the Jews unto him Now we know that thou hast a devil Abraham is dead and the prophets and thou sayest If a man keep my saying he shall never taste of death 53 Art thou greater then our father Abraham which is dead and the prophets are dead whom makest thou thy self 54 Jesus answered If I honour my self my honour is nothing it is my Father that honoureth me of whom ye say that he is your God 55 Yet ye have not known him but I know him and if I should say I know him not I shall be a liar like unto you but I know him and keep his saying 56 Your father Abraham rejoyced to see my day and he saw it and was glad 57 Then said the Jews unto him Thou art not yet fifty years old and hast thou seen Abraham 58 Jesus said unto them Verily verily I say unto you Before Abraham was I am 59 Then took they up stones to cast at him but Jesus hid himself went out of the temple going through the midst of them so passed by CHAP. IX 1 The man that was born blinde restored to sight 8 He is brought to the Pharisees 13 They are offended at it and excommunicate him 35 but he is received of Jesus and confesseth him 39 Who they are whom Christ enlightneth ANd as Jesus passed by he saw a man which was blinde from his birth 2 And his disciples asked him saying Master who did sin this man or his parents that he was born blinde 3 Jesus answered Neither hath this man sinned nor his parents but that the works of God should be made manifest in him 4 I must work the works of him that sent me while it is day the night cometh when no man can work 5 As long as I am in the world * Chap. 1.9 I am the light of the world 6 When he had thus spoken he spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle and he ‖ Or spread the clay upon the eyes of the blinde man anointed the eyes of the blinde man with the clay 7 And said unto him Go wash in the pool of Siloam which is by interpretation Sent. priest that same year said unto them Ye know nothing at all 50 * Chap. 18.14 Nor consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people and that the whole nation perish not 51 And this spake he not of himself but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation 52 And not for that nation onely but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad 53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death 54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews but went thence unto a countrey near to the wilderness into a city called Ephraim and there continued with his disciples 55 ¶ And the Jews pass-over was nigh at hand and many went out of the countrey up to Jerusalem before the pass-over to purifie themselves 56 Then sought they for Jesus and spake among themselves as they stood in the temple What think ye that he will not come to the feast 57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment that if any man knew where he were he should shew it that they might take him CHAP. XII 1 Jesus excuseth Mary anointing his feet 9 The people flock to see Lazarus 10 The hiâ—h priests consult to kill him 12 Christ rideth into Jerusalem 20 Greeks desire to see Jesus 23 He foretelleth his death 37 The Jews are generally blinded 42 yet many chief rulers beleeve but do not consess him 44 therefore Jesus calleth earnestly for confession of faith THen Jesus six days before the pass-over came to Bethany where Lazarus was which had been dead whom he raised from the dead 2 There they made him a supper and Martha served but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him 3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard very costly and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feâ—t with her hair and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment 4 Then saith one of his disciples Judas Iscariot Simons son which should betray him 5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence and given to the poor 6 This he said not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief and * Chap. 13.29 had the bag and bare what was put therein 7 Then said Jesus Let her alone against the day of my burying hath she kept this 8 For the poor always ye have with you but me ye have not always 9 Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there and they came not for Jesus sake onely but that they might see Lazarus also whom he had raised from the dead 10 ¶ But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death 11 Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away and beleeved on Jesus 12 ¶ * Mat. 21.8 On the next day much people that were come to the feast when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem 13 Took branches of palm-trees and went forth to meet him and cried Hosanna blessed is the king of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. 14 And Jesus when he had found a young ass sat thereon as it is written 15 * Zech. 9.9 Fear not daughter of Sion behold thy King cometh sitting on an asses colt 16 These things understood not his disciples at the first but when Jesus was glorified then remembred they that these things were written of him and that they had done these things unto him 17 The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave and raised him from the dead bare record 18 For this cause the people also met him for that they heard that he had done this miracle 19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing behold the world is gone after him 20 ¶ And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast 21 The same came therefore to Philip which was of Bethsaida of Galilee and desired him saying Sir we would see Jesus 22 Philip cometh and telleth Andrew and again Andrew and Philip told Jesus 23 ¶ And Jesus answered them saying The hour is come that the Son of man should be glorified 24 Verily verily I say unto you Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die it abideth alone but if it die it bringeth forth much fruit 25 * Mat. 10 39. XXV 2 The Jews accuse Paul before Festus 8 He answereth for himself 11 and appealeth unto Cesar 14 Afterwards Festus openeth his matter to king Agrippa 23 and â—e is brought forth 25 Festus cleareth him to have done nothing worthy of death NOw when Festus was come into the province after three days he ascended from Cesarea to Jerusalem 2 Then the high priest and the chief of the Jews enformed him against Paul and besought him 3 And desired favour against him that he would send for him to Jerusalem laying wait in the way to kill him 4 But Festus answered that Paul should be kept at Cesarea and that he himself would depart shortly thither 5 Let them therefore said he which among you are able go down with me and accuse this man it there be any wickedness in him 6 And when he had tarried among them ‖ Or as some copies read no more then eiâ—gt no ten days more then ten days he went down unto Cesarea and the next day sitting in the judgement-seat commanded Paul to be brought 7 And when he was come the Jews which came down from Jerusalem stood round about and said many and grievous complaints against Paul which they could not prove 8 While he answered for himself Neither against the law of the Jews neither against the temple nor yet against Cesar have I

XXVIII 1 Paul after his shipwrack is kindly entertained of the Barbarians 3 The viper on his hand hurteth him not 8 He healeth many diseases in the island 11 They depart towards Rome 17 He declareth to the Jews the cause of his coming 24 After his preaching some were perswaded and some beleeved not 30 Yet he preacheth there two years ANd when they were escaped then they knew that the island was called Melita 2 And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness for they kindled a fire and received us every one because of the present rain and because of the cold 3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire there came a viper out of the heat and fastned on his hand 4 And when the Barbarians law the venemous beast hang on his hand they said among themselves No doubt this man is a murderer whom though he hath escaped the sea yet vengeance suffereth not to live 5 And he shook off the beast into the fire and felt no harm 6 Howbeit they looked when he should have swoln or faln down dead suddenly but after they had looked a great while and saw no harm come to him they changed their minds and said that he was a God 7 In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island whose name was Publius who received us and lodged us three days courteously 8 And it came to pass that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloudy flux to whom Paul entred in and prayed and laid his hands on him and healed him 9 So when this was done others also which had diseases in the island came and were healed 10 Who also honoured us with many honours and when we departed they laded us with such things as were necessary 11 And after three moneths we departed in a ship of Alexandria which had wintred in the isle whose signe was Castor and Pollux 12 And landing at Syracuse we tarried there three days 13 And from thence we set a compass and came to Rhegium and after one day the south-wind blew and we came the next day to Puteoâ—â— 14 Where we found brethren and were desired to tarry with them seven days and so we went toward Rome 15 And from thence when the brethren heard of us they came to meet us as far as Appii-forum and the Three taverns whom when Paul saw he thanked God and took courage 16 And when we came to Rome the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a souldier that kept him 17 And it came to pass that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together And when they were come together he said unto them Men and brethren though I have committed nothing against the people or customs of our fathers yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans 18 Who when they had examined me would have let me go because there was no cause of death in me 19 But when the Jews spake against it I was constrained to appeal unto Cesar not that I had ought to accuse my nation of 20 For this cause therefore have I called for you to see you and to speak with you because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain 21 And they said unto him We neither received letters out of Judea concerning thee neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee 22 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest for as concerning this sect we know that every where it is spoken against 23 And when they had appointed him a day there came many to him into his lodging to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God perswading them concerning Jesus both out of the law of Moses and out of the prophets from morning till evening 24 And some beleeved the things which were spoken and some beleeved not 25 And when they agreed not among themselves they departed after that Paul had spoken one word Well spake the holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers 26 Saying * Isa 6.9 Mat. 13.14 Mar. 4.12 Luk. 8.10 Joh. 12.40 Rom. 11.8 Go unto this people and say Hearing ye shall hear and shall not understand and seeing ye shall see and not perceive 27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross and their ears are dull of hearing and their eyes have they closed lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and should be converted and I should heal them 28 Be it known therefore unto you that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles and that they will hear it 29 And when he had said these words the Jews departed and had great reasoning among themselves 30 And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house and received all that came in unto him 31 Preaching the kingdom of God and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence no man forbidding him ¶ The epistle of PAUL the Apostle to the ROMANS CHAP. I. 1 Paul commendeth his calling to the Romans 9 and his desire to come to them 16 What his gospel is and the righteousness which it sheweth 18 God is angry with all manner of sin 21 What were the sins of the Gentiles PAul a servant of Jesus Christ called to be an apostle * Act. 13.2 separated unto the gospel of God 2 Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures 3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh 4 And †Or. determined declared to be the Son of God with power according to the spirit of holiness by the resurrection from the dead 5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship ‖ Or to the obedience of faith for obedience to the faith among all nations for his name 6 Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ 7 To all that be in Rome beloved of God called to be saints Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ 8 First I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world 9 For God is my witness whom I serve ‖ Or in my spirit with my spirit in the Gospel of his Son that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers
10 Making request if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you 11 For I long to see you that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift to the end you may be established 12 That is that I may be comforted together ‖ Or in you with you by the mutual faith both of you and me 13 Now I would not have you ignorant brethren that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you but was let hitherto that I might have some fruit ‖ Or in you among you also even as among other Gentiles 14 I am debter both to the Greeks and to the Barbarians both to the wise and to the unwise 15 So as much as in me is I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that beleeveth to the Jew first and also to the Greek 17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith as it is written * Hâ—b 2.4 Gal. 3.11 Heb. 10.38 The just shall live by faith 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who hold the truth in unrighteousness 19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest ‖ Or to them in them for God hath shewed it unto them 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen being understood by the things that are made even his eternal power and Godhead ‖ Or that they may be so that they are without excuse 21 Because that when they knew God they glorified him not as God neither were thankful but became vain in their imaginations and their foolish heart was * Eph. 4.18 darkned 22 Professing themselves to be wise they became fools 23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible * Psal 106.10 God into an image made like to corruptible man and to birds and four-footed beasts and creeping things 24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts to dishonour their own bodies between themselves 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie and worshipped and served the creature more then the Creatour who is blessed for ever Amen 26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections For even their women did change thou natural use into thou which is against nature 27 And likewise also the men leaving the natural use of the woman burned in their lust one toward another men with men working that which is unseemly and receiving in themselves that recompence of their errour which was meet 28 And even as they did not like ‖ Or to acknowledge to retain God in their knowledge God gave them over to ‖ Or a minde â—â—id of judgement a reprobate minde to do those things which are not convenient 29 Being filled with all unrighteousness fornication wickedness covetousness maliciousness full of envy murder debate deceit malignity whisperers 30 Backbiters haters of God despiteful proud boasters inventers of evil things disobedient to parents 31 Without understanding covenant-breakers ‖ Or unsociable without natural affection implacable unmerciful 32 Who knowing the judgement of God that they which commit such things are worthy of death not onely do the same but ‖ Or â—sâ—â—t with them have pleasure in them that do them CHAP. II. 1 They that sin though they condemn it in others cannot excuse themselves 6 and much less escape the judgement of God 9 whether they be Jews or Gentiles 14 The Gentiles cannot escape 17 nor yet the Jews 25 whom their circumcision shall not profit if they keep not the law THerefore thou art inexcusable O man whosoever thou art that judgest * Mâ—l 7.2 for wherein thou judgest another thou condemnest thy self for thou that judgest doest the same things 2 But we are sure that the judgement of God is according to truth against them which commit such things 3 And thinkest thou this O man that judgest them which do such things doest the fame that thou shalt escape the judgement of God 4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and long-suffering not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance 5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart * Jam. 5.3 treasurest up unto thy self wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgement of God 6 * Psâ— 2.12 â—â—t 16.27 â—er 22 12. Who will tender to every man according to his deeds 7 To them who by patient continuance in well-doing seek for glory and honour and immortality eternal life 8 But unto them that are contentious and do not obey the truth but obey unrighteousness indignation and wrath 9 Tribulation and anguish upon every soul of man that doeth evil of the Jew first and also of the †Gr. Greek Gentile 10 But glory honour and peace to every man that worketh good to the Jew first and also to the †Gr. Greek Gentile 11 For * Deu. 10.17 2 Chr. 19.7 Job 34.19 Act. 10.34 Gal. 2.6 Eph. 6.9 Col. 3.25 1 Pet. 1.17 there is no respect of persons with God 12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law 13 For * Mat. 7.21 Jam. 1.22 not the hearers of the law are just before God but the doers of the law shall be justified 14 For when the Gentiles which have not the law do by nature the things contained in the law these having not the law are a law unto themselves 15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts ‖ Or the conscience witnessing with them their conscience also bearing witness and their thoughts ‖ Or between themselves the mean while accusing or else excusing one another 16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel 17 Behold thou art called a Jew and restest in the law and makest thy boast of God 18 And knowest his will and ‖ Or triast the things that differ approvest the things that are more excellent being instructed out of the law 19 And art confident that thou thy self art a guide of the blinde a light of them which are in darkness 20 An instructer of the foolish a teacher of babes which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law 21 Thou therefore which teachest another teachest thou not thy self thou that preachest a man should not steal dost thou steal 22 Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery dost thou commit adultery thou that abhorrelâ— idols dost thou commit sacriledge 23 Thou that makest thy boast of the law through breaking the law
the flesh to live after the flesh 13 For if ye live after the flesh ye shall die but if ye through the Spirit do mortifie the deeds of the body ye shall live 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God they are the sons of God 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear but ye have received the * Gal. 4.6 Spirit of adoption whereby we cry Abba Father 16 The Spirit it self beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God 17 And if children then heirs heirs of God and joynt heirs with Christ if so be that we suffer with him that we may be also glorified together 18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us 19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God 20 For the creature was made subject to vanity not willingly but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope 21 Because the creature it self also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God 22 For we know that ‖ Or every creature the whole creation groaneth and travelleth in pain together until now 23 And not only they but our selves also which have the first-fruits of the Spirit even we our selves groan within our selves waiting for the adoption to wit the * Luke 21.28 redemption of our body 24 For we are saved by hope But hope that is seen is not hope for what a man seeth why doth he yet hope for 25 But if we hope for that we see not then do we with patience wait for it 26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities for we know not what we should pray for as we ought but the Spirit it self maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the minde of the Spirit ‖ Or that because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God 28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God to them who are the called according to his purpose 29 For whom he did foreknow he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son that he might be the first-born among many brethren 30 Moreover whom he did predestinate them he also called and whom he called them he also justified and whom he justified them he also glorified 31 What shall we then say to these things If God be for us who can be against us 32 He that spared not his own Son but delivered him up for us all how shall he not with him also freely give us all things 33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of Gods elect It is God that justifieth 34 Who is he that condemneth It is Christ that died yea rather that is risen again who is even at the right hand of God who also maketh intercession for us 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ shall tribulation or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or peril or sword 36 As it is written * Psal 44.22 For thy sake we are killed all the day long we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter 37 Nay in all these things we are more then conquerers through him that loved us 38 For I am perswaded that neither death nor life nor angels nor principalities nor powers nor things present nor things to come 39 Nor height nor depth nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. CHAP. IX 1 Paul is sorry for the Jews 7 All the seed of Abraham were not the children of the promise 18 God hath mercy upon whom he will 21 The potter may do with his clay what he list 25 The calling of the Gentiles and rejecting of the Jews were foretold 32 The cause why so few Jews embraced the righteousness of faith I Say the truth in Christ I lie not my conscience also bearing me witness in the holy Ghost 2 That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart 3 For I could wish that myself were ‖ Or separated accursed from Christ for my brethren my kinsmen according to the flesh 4 Who are Israelites to whom pertaineth the adoption and the glory and the ‖ Or testaments covenants and the giving of the law and the service of God and the promises 5 Whose are the fathers and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came who is over all God blessed for ever Amen 6 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect For they are not all Israel which are of Israel 7 Neither because they are the seed of Abraham are they all children but in * Gen. 21.12 Isaac shall thy seed be called 8 That is They which are the children of the flesh these are not the children of God but * Gal. 4.28 the children of the promise are counted for the seed 9 For this is the word of promise * Gen 18.10 At this time will I come and Sara shall have a son 10 And not onely this but when Rebecca also had conceived by one even by our father Isaac 11 For the children being not yet born neither having done any good or evil that the purpose of God according to election might stand not of works but of him that calleth 12 It was said unto her The * Gen. 25.23 ‖ Or greater elder shall serve the ‖ Or lesser younger 13 As it is written * Mal. 1.2 3. Jacob have I loved but Esau have I hated 14 What shall we say then Is there unrighteousness with God God forbid 15 For he saith to Moses * Exod. 33.19 I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion 16 So then it is not of him that willeth nor of him that runneth but of God which sheweth mercy 17 For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh * Exod. 9.16 Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up that I might shew my power in thee and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth 18 Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy and whom he will he hardneth 19 Thou wilt say then unto me Why doth he yet finde fault For who hath resisted his will 20 Nay but O man who art thou that ‖ Or answerest again or disputest with God repliest against God * Isa 45.9 shall the thing formed say to him that formed it Why hast thou made me thus 21 Hath not the * Jer. 18.6 Wis 15.7 potter power over the clay of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour and another unto dishonour 22 What if God willing
a man take of you if a man exalt himself if a man smite you on the face 21 I speak as concerning reproach as though we had been weak howbeit wherein soever any is bold I speak foolishly I am bold also 22 Are they Hebrews * Phil. 3.5 so am I are they Israelâ—tâ—s so am I are they the seed of Abraham so am I 23 Are they ministers of Christ I speak as a fool I am more in labours more abundant in stripes above measure in prisons more frequent in deaths oft 24 Of the Jews five times received I * Deu. 25.3 fourty stripes save one 25 Thrice was I * Act. 16.22 beaten with rods * Act. 14.19 once was I stoned thrice I * Act. 27. suffered shipwrack a night and a day I have been in the deep 26 In journeying often in perils of waters in perils of robbers in perils by mine own countreymen in perils by the heathen in perils in the city in perils in the wilderness in perils in the sea in perils among false brethren 27 In weariness and painfulness in watchings often in hunger and thirst in fastings often in cold and nakedness 28 Besides those things that are without that which cometh upon me daily the care of all the churches 29 Who is weak and I am not weak who is offended I burn not 30 If I must needs glory I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities 31 The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ which is blessed for evermore knoweth that I lie not 32 * Act. 9.24 In Damascus the governour under Aretas the king kept the city of the Damascenes with a garison desirous to apprehend me 33 And through a window in a basket was I let down by the wall and escaped his hands CHAP. XII 1 For commending of his apostleship though he might glory of his wonderful revelations 9 yet he rather chooseth to glory of his infirmities 11 blaming them for forcing him to this vain boasting 14 He promiseth to come to them again but yet altogether in the affection of a father 20 although he feareth he shall to his grief finde many offenders and publick disorders there IT is not expedient for me doubtless to glory I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord. 2 I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago whether in the body I cannot tell or whether out of the body I cannot tell God knoweth such an one caught up to the third heaven 3 And I knew such a man whether in the body or out of the body I cannot tell God knoweth 4 How that he was caught up into paradise and heard unspeakable words which it is not ‖ Or. posâ—â—tâ—â—e lawful for a man to utter 5 Of such an one will I glory yet of my self I will not glory but in mine infirmities 6 For though I would desire to glory I shall not be a fool for I will say the truth but now I forbear lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be or that he heareth of me 7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations there was given to me a * See Ezek. 28.24 thorn in the flesh the messenger of Satan to buffet me lest I should be exalted above measure 8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice that it might depart from me 9 And he said unto me My grace is sufficient for thee for my strength is made perfect in weakness Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities that the power of Christ may rest upon me 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities in reproaches in necessities in persecutions in distresses for Christs sake for when I am weak then am I strong 11 I am become a fool in glorying ye have compelled me for I ought to have been commended of you for in nothing am I behinde the very chiefest apostles though I be nothing 12 Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience in signs and wonders and mighty deeds 13 For with is it wherein ye were inferiour to other Churches except it be that * Chap. 11.9 I my self was not burdensom to your forgive me this wrong 14 Behold the third time I am ready to come to you and I will not be burdensom to you for I seek not yours but you for the children ought not to lay up for the parents but the parents for the children 15 And I will very gladly spend and be spent for †Gr. your souls you though the more abundantly I love you the less I be loved 16 But be it so I did not burden you nevertheless being crafty I caught you with guile 17 Did I make a gain of you by any of them whom I sent unto you 18 I desired Titus with him I sent a brother did Titus make a gain of you walked we not in the same Spirit walked we not in the same steps 19 Again think you that we excuse our selves unto you we speak before God in Christ but we do all things dearly beloved for your edifying 20 For I fear lest when I come I shall not finde you such as I would and that I shall be found unto you such as ye would not lest there be debates envyings wraths strifes backbitings whisperings swellings tumults 21 And lest when I come again my God will humble me among you and that I shall bewail many which have sinned already and have not repented of the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness which they have committed CHAP. XIII 1 He threatneth severity and the power of his apostleship against obstinate sinners 5 and advising them to a trial of their faith 7 and to reformation of their sins before his coming 11 be concludeth his epistle with a general exhortation and a prayer THis is the third time I am coming to you * Deut. 19.15 In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established 2 I told you before and foretel you as if I were present the second time and being absent now I write to them which heretofore have finned and to all other that if I come again I will not spare 3 Since ye seek a proof of Christ speaking in me which to you-ward is not weak but is mighty in you 4 For though he was crucified through weakness yet he liveth by the power of God For we also are weak ‖ Or with him in him but we shall live with him by the power of God toward you 5 Examine your selves whether ye be in the faith prove your own selves know ye not your own selves how that Jesus Christ is in you except ye be reprobates 6 But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates 7 Now I pray to God that ye do no evil not that we should appear approved but that ye should do that which is
