of the Shimites these are the families of the Gershonites 22 Those that were numbred of them according to the number of all the males from a moneth old and upward even those that were numbred of them were seven thousand and five hundred 23 The families of the Gershonites shall pitch behinde the tabernacle west-ward 24 And the chief of the house of the father of the Gershonites shall be Eliasaph the son of Lael 25 And the charge of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation shall be the tabernacle and the tent the covering thereof and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation 26 And the hangings of the court and the curtain for the door of the court which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about and the cords of it for all the service thereof 27 ¶ And of Kohath was the family of the Amramites and the family of the Izeharites and the family of the Hebronites and the family of the Uzzielites these are the families of the Kohathites 28 In the number of all the males from a moneth old and u●ward were eight thousand six hundred keeping the charge of the sanct●ary 29 The families of the sons of Kohath shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle south-ward 30 And the chief of the house of the father of the families of the Kohathites shall be Elizaphan the son of Uzziel 31 And their charge shall be the ark and the table and the candlestick and the altars and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith they minister and the hanging and all the service thereof 32 And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be chief over the chief of the Levites and have the oversight of them that keep the charge of the sanctuary 33 ¶ Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites and the family of the Mushites these are the families of Merari 34 And those that were numbred of them according to the number of all the males from a moneth old and upward were six thousand and two hundred 35 And the chief of the house of the father of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail these shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle north-ward 36 And † Heb. the office of the charge under the custody and charge of the sons of Merari shall be the boards of the tabernacle and the bars thereof and the pillars thereof and the sockets thereof and all the vessels thereof and all that serveth thereto 37 And the pillars of the court round about and their sockets and their pins and their cords 38 ¶ But those that encamp before the tabernacle toward the east even before the tabernacle of the congregation east-ward shall be Moses and Aaron and his sons keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Israel and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death 39 All that were numbred of the Levites which Moses and Aaron numbred at the commandment of the LORD throughout their families all the males from a moneth old and upward were twenty and two thousand 40 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Number all the first-born of the males of the children of Israel from a moneth old and upward and take the number of their names 41 And thou shalt take the Levites for me I am the LORD in stead of all the first-born among the children of Israel and the cattel of the Levites instead of all the firstlings among the cattel of the children of Israel 42 And Moses numbred as the LORD commanded him all the first-born among the children of Israel 43 And all the first-born males by the number of names from a moneth old and upward of those that were numbred of them were twenty and two thousand two hundred and threescore and thirteen 44 And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 45 Take the Levites in stead of all the first-born among the children of Israel and the cattel of the Levites in stead of their cattel and the Levites shall be mine I am the LORD 46 And for those that are to be redeemed of the two hundred and threescore and thirteen of the first-born of the children of Israel which are more then the Levites 47 Thou shalt even take five shekels a piece by the poll after the shekel of the sanctuary shalt thou take them * Exod. 30.13 Lev. 27.25 Ch. 18.16 Ezek. 45.12 the shekel is twenty gerahs 48 And thou shalt give the money wherewith the odd number of them is to be redeemed unto Aaron and to his sons 49 And Moses took the redemption-money of them that were over and above them that were redeemed by the Levites 50 Of the first-born of the children of Israel took he the money a thousand three hundred and threescore and five shekels after the shekel of the sanctuary 51 And Moses gave the money of them that were redeemed unto Aaron and to his sons according to the word of the LORD as the LORD commanded Moses CHAP. XIII 1 Eupator invadeth Judea 15 Judas by night slayeth many 18 Eupators purpose is defeated 23 He maketh peace with Judas IN the hundred fourty and ninth year it was told Judas that Antiochus Eupator was coming with a great power into Judea 2 And with him Lysias his protectour and ruler of his affairs having either of them a Grecian power of footmen an hundred ten thousand and hors-men five thousand and three hundred and elephants two and twenty and three hundred chariots armed with hooks 3 Menelaus also joyned himself with them and with great dissimulation encouraged Antiochus not for the safeguard of the countrey but because he thought to have been made governour 4 But the King of kings moved Antiochus minde against this wicked wretch and Lysias informed the king that this man was the cause of all mischief so that the king commanded to bring him unto Berea and to put him to death as the manner is in that place 5 Now there was in that place a towre of fifty cubits high full of ashes and it had a round instrument which on every side hanged down into the ashes 6 And whosoever was condemned of sacriledge or had committed any other grievous crime there did all men thrust him unto death 7 Such a death it hapned that wicked man to die not having so much as burial in the earth and that most justly 8 For insomuch as he had committed many sins about the altar whose fire and ashes were holy he received his death in ashes 9 Now the king came with a barbarous and haughty minde to do far worse to the Jews then had been done in his fathers time 10 Which things when Judas perceived he commanded the multitude to call upon the Lord night and day that if ever at any other time he would now also help them being at the point to be put from their law from their countrey and from the holy temple 11 And that he would not suffer the people that ‖ Or bad bad a little respite had even now been but a little refreshed to be in subjection to the blasphemous nations 12 So when they had all done this together and besought the merciful Lord with weeping and fasting and lying flat upon the groud three days long Judas having exhorted them commanded they should be in a readiness 13 And Judas being apart with the elders determined before the kings host should enter into Judea and get the city to go forth and try the matter in fight by the help of the Lord. 14 So when he had committed all to the ‖ Or Lord. Creatour of the world and exhorted his souldiers to fight manfully even unto death for the laws the temple the city the countrey the common-wealth he camped by Modin 15 And having given the watch-word to them that were about him Victory is of God with the most valiant choice young men he went in into the kings tent by night slew in the camp about four thousand men and the chiefest of the elephants with all that were upon him 16 And at last they filled the camp with sear and tumult and departed with good success 17 This was done in the break of the day because the protection of the Lord did help him 18 Now when the king had taken a taste of the manliness of the Jews he went about to take the holds by policy 19 And marched towards Bethsura which was a strong hold of the Jews but he was put to flight failed and lost of his men 20 For Judas had conveyed unto them that were in it such things as were necessary 21 But Rhodochus who was in the Jews host disclosed the secrets to the enemies therefore he was sought out and when they had gotten him they put him in prison 22 The king treated with them in Bethsura the second time gave his hand took theirs departed sought with Judas was over come 23 Heard that Philip who was le●t over the affairs in Antioch ‖ Or rebelled was desperately bent confounded intreated the Jews submitted himself and sware to all equal conditions agreed with them and offered sacrifice honoured the temple and dealt kindly with the place 24 And accepted well of Maccabeus made him principal governour from Ptolemais unto the Gerrhenians 25 Came to Ptolemais the people there were grieved for the covenants for they stormed because they would make their covenants void 26 Lysias went up to the judgment-seat said as much as could be in defence of the cause perswaded pacified made them well affected returned to Antioch Thus it went touching the kings coming departing CHAP. XIV 6 Aleimus accuseth Judas 18 Nicanor maketh peace with Judas 39 He seeketh to take Bazis 46 who to escape his bands killeth himself AFter three years was Judas informed that Demetrius the son of Seleucus having entred by the haven of Tripolis with a great power and navy 2 Had taken the countrey and killed Antiochus and Lysias his protectour 3 Now one Alcimus who had been high priest and had defiled himself wilfully in the times of their mingling with the Gentiles seeing that by no means he could save himself nor have any more access to the holy altar 4 Came to king Demetrius in the hundred and one and fiftieth year presenting unto him a crown of gold and a palm and also of the boughs which were ‖ Or thought to be of the temple used solemnly in the temple so that day he held his peace 5 Howbeit having gotten opportunity to further his foolish enterprise and being called into counsel by Demetrius and asked how the Jews stood affected and what they intended he answered thereunto
priests house And Peter followed afar off 55 * Matth. 26.69 And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall and were set down together Peter sat down among them 56 But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire and earnestly looked upon him and said This man was also with him 57 And he denied him saying Woman I know him not 58 And after a little while another saw him and said Thou art also of them And Peter said Man I am not 59 And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed saying Of a truth this fellox also was with him for he is a Galilean 60 And Peter said Man I know not what thou sayest And immediately while he yet spake the cock crew 61 And the Lord turned and looked upon Peter and Peter remembred the word of the Lord how he had said unto him Before the cock crow thou shalt deny me thrice 62 And Peter went out and wept bitterly 63 ¶ And the men that held Jesus mocked him and smote him 64 And when they had blindfolded him they stroke him on the face and asked him saying Prophesie who is it that smote thee 65 And many other things blasphemously spake they against him 66 ¶ * Mat. 27.1 And assoon as it was day the elders of the people the chief priests and the scribes came together and led him into their council 67 Saying Art thou the Christ tell us And he said unto them If I tell you you will not beleeve 68 And it I also ask you you will not answer me nor let me go 69 Hereafter shall the Son of man tit on the right hand of the power of God 70 Then said they all Art thou then the Son of God And he said unto them * Mark 14. ●1 Ye say that I am 71 And they said What need we any further witness for we our selves have heard of his own mouth CHAP. XXIII 1 Jesus is accused before Pilate and sent to Herod 8 Herod mocketh him 12 Herod and Pilate are made friends 18 Barabbas is desired of the people and is loosed by Pilate and Jesus is given to be crucifie i. 27 He telleth the women that lament him the destruction of Jerusalem 34 prayeth for his enemies 39 Two evil-doers are crue fie● with him 46 His death 50 His burial ANd the whole multitude of them arose and led him unto Pilate 2 And they began to accuse him saying We found this fellow perverting the nation and forbidding to give tribute to Cesar saying that he himself is Christ a king 3 * Mat. 27. ●1 And Pilate asked him saying Art thou the king of the Jews and he answered him and said Thou sayest it 4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people I finde no fault in this man 5 And they were the more fierce saying He stirreth up the people teaching throughout all Jury beginning from Galilee to this place 6 When Pilate heard of Galilee he asked whether the man were a Galilean 7 And assoon as he knew that he belonged unto Herods jurisdiction he sent him to Herod who himself was also at Jerusalem at that time 8 ¶ And when Herod saw Jesus he was exceeding glad for he was desirous to see him of a long season because he had heard many things of him and he hoped to have seen some miracle dome by him 9 Then he questioned with him in many words but he answered him nothing 10 And the chief priests scribes stood vehemently accused him 11 And Herod with his men of war set him at nought and mocked him and arayed him in a gorgeous robe and sent him again to Pilate 12 ¶ And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together for before they were at emnmity between themselves 13 ¶ * Mat. 27. ●3 And Pilate when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people 14 Said unto them Ye have brought this man unto me as one that perverteth the people and behold I have examined him before you have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him 15 No nor yet Herod for I sent you to him and lo nothing worthy of death is done unto him 16 I will therefore chastise him and release him 17 For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast 18 And they cried out all at once saying Away with this man and release unto us Barabbas 19 Who for a certain sedition made in the city and for murder was cast in prison 20 Pilate therefore willing to release jesus spake again to them 21 But they cried saying Crucifie him crucifie him 22 And he said unto them the third time Why what evil hath he done I have found no cause of death in him I will therefore chastise him and let him go 23 And they were instant with loud voices requiring that he might be crucified and the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed 24 And Pilate ‖ Or assented gave sentence that it should be as they required 25 And he released unto them him that for sedition murder was cast into prison whom they had desired but he delivered Jesus to their-will 26 * Mat. 27.32 And as they led him away they laid hold upon one Simon a Cyrenian coming out of the countrey and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus 27 ¶ And there followed him a great company of people and of women which also bewailed and lamented him 28 But Jesus turning unto them said Daughters of Jerusalem weep not for me but weep for your selves and for your children 29 For behold the days are coming in the which they shall say Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bare and the paps which never gave suck 30 * Is● 2.19 ●●os 1● 8 Rev. 6.16 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains Fall on us and to the hills Cover us 31 * 1 Pet. 4.17 For if they do these things in a green tree what shall be done in the dry 32 * Mat. 27.38 And there were also two other malefactours led with him to be put to death 33 And when they were come to the place which is called ‖ Or the place of a ●●ull Calvarie there they crucified him and the malefactours one on the right hand and the other on the left 34 ¶ Then said Jesus Father forgive them for they know not what they do And they parted his raiment and cast lots 35 And the people stood beholding and the rulers also with them derided him saying He saved others let him save himself if he be Chri●t the chosen of God 36 And the souldiers also mocked him coming to him and offering him vineger 37 And saying If thou be the king of the Jews save thy self 38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of
stone me 33 The Jews answered him saying For a good work we stone thee not but for blasphemy and because that thou being a man makest thy self God 34 Jesus answered them * Psal 8● 6 Is it not written in your law I said Ye are gods 35 If he called them gods unto whom the word of God came and the scripture cannot be broken 36 Say ye of him whom the Father hath sanctified and sent into the world Thou blasphemest because I said I am the Son of God 37 If I do not the works of my Father beleeve me not 38 But if I do though ye beleeve not me beleeve the works that ye may know and beleeve that the Father is in me and I in him 39 Therefore they sought again to take him but he escaped out of their hand 40 And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized and there he abode 41 And many reforted unto him and said John did no miracle but all things that John spake of this man were true 42 And many beleeved on him there CHAP. XI 1 Christ raiseth Lazarus four days buried 4● Many Jews beleeve 47 The b●●h priests and Pharisees gather a council against Christ 49 Caiaphas prophesieth 54 Jesus hid himself 55 At the pass-over they enquire after him and lay wait for him NOw a certain man was sick named Lazarus of Bethany the town of Mary and her sister Martha 2 * Mat. 26.7 It was that Mary which ano●nted the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair whose brother Lazarus was sick 3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him saying Lord behold he whom thou lovest is sick 4 When Jesus heard that he said This sickness is not unto death but for the glory of God that the Son of God might be glorified thereby 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus 6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick he abode two days still in the same place where he was 7 Then after that saith he to his disciples Let us go into Judea again 8 His disciples say unto him Master the Jews of late sought to stone thee and goest thou thither again 9 Jesus answered Are there not twelve hours in the day If any man walk in the day he stumbleth not because he seeth the light of this world 10 But if a man walk in the night he stumbleth because there is no light in him 11 These things said he and after that he saith unto them Our friend Lazarus sleepeth but I go that I may awake him out of sleep 12 Then said his disciples Lord if he sleep he shall do well 13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep 14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly Lazarus is dead 15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there to the intent ye may beleeve nevertheless let us go unto him 16 Then said Thomas which is called Didymus unto his fellow-disciples Let us also go that we may die with him 17 Then when Jesus came he sound that he had lien in the grave four days already 18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem ‖ That is about two miles about fifteen furlongs off 19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary to comfort them concerning their brother 20 Then Martha assoon as she heard that Jesus was coming went and met him but Mary sat still in the house 21 Then said Martha unto Jesus Lord if thou hadst been here my brother had not died 22 But I know that even now whatsoever thou wilt ask of God God will give it thee 23 Jesus saith unto her Thy brother shall rise again 24 Martha saith unto him * Luk. 14.14 Chap. 5.29 I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day 25 Jesus said unto her I am the resurrection and the * Ch. ● 35 life he that beleeveth in me t●ough he were dead yet shall he live 26 And whosoever liveth and beleeveth in me shall never die Beleevest thou this 27 She saith unto him Yea Lord I beleeve that thou art the Christ the Son of God which should come into the world 28 And when she had so said she went her way and called Mary her sister secretly saying The Master is come and calleth for thee 29 Assoon as she heard that she arose quickly and came unto him 30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town but was in that place where Martha met him 31 The Jews then which were with her in the house and comforted her when they saw Mary that she rose up hastily and went out followed her saving She goeth unto the grave to weep there 32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was and saw him she fell down at his feet saying unto him Lord if thou hadst been here my brother had not died 33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping and the Jews also weeping which came with her he groaned in the spirit and † Gr. be troubled himself was troubled 34 And said Where have ye laid him They say unto him Lord come and see 35 J●sus wept 36 Then said the Jews Behold how he loved him 37 And some of them said Could not this man * Chap. 9.6 which opened the eyes of the blinde have caused that even this man should not have died 38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave It was a cave and a stone lay upon it 39 Jesus said Take ye away the stone Martha the sister of him that was dead saith unto him Lord by this time he stinketh for he hath been dead four days 40 Jesus saith unto her Said I not unto thee that if thou wouldest beleeve thou shouldest see the glory of God 41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was said And Jesus list up his eyes and said Father I thank thee that thou hast heard me 42 And I knew that thou hearest me always but because of the people which stand by I said it that they may beleeve that thou hast sent me 43 And when he thus had spoken he cried with a loud voice Lazarus come forth 44 And he that was dead came sorth bound hand and foot with grave-clothes and his face was bound about with a napkin Jesus saith unto them Loose him and let him go 45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary and had seen the things which Jesus did beleeved on him 46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees and told them what things Jesus had done 47 ¶ Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council and said What do we for this man doeth many miracles 48 If we let him thus alone all men will beleeve on him and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation 49 And one of them named Caiaphas being the high
the moneth Adar the fourteenth and fifteenth day of the same moneth with an assembly and joy and with gladness before God according to the generations for ever among his people CHAP. XI 2 The sock and quality of Mardocheus 6 He dreameth of two dragons coming forth to fight 10 and of a little fountain which became a great water IN the fourth year of the reign of Ptolomeus and Cleopatra Dositheus who said he was a priest and Levite and Ptolomeus his son brought this epistle of Phurim which they said was the same and that Lysimachus the son of Ptolomeus that was in Jerusalem had interpreted it 2 In the second year of the reign of Anaxerxes the great in the first day of the moneth Nisan Mardocheus the son of Jairus the son of Semei the son of Cisai of the tribe of Benjamin had a dream 3 Who was a Jew and dwelt in the city of Sula a great man being a servitour in the kings court 4 He was also one of the captives which Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon carried from Jerusalem with Jechonias king of Judea and this was his dream 5 Behold a noise of a tumult with thunder and earthquakes and uproar in the land 6 And behold two great dragons came forth ready to fight and their cry was great 7 And at their cry all nations were prepared to hattel that they might fight against the righteous people 8 And so a day of darkness and obscurity tribulation and anguish affliction and great uproar upon the earth 9 And the whole righteous nation was troubled fearing their own evils and were ready to perish 10 Then they cried unto God and upon their cry as it were from a little fountain was made a great floud even much water 11 The light and the sun rose up and the lowly were exalted and devoured the glorious 12 Now when Mardocheus who had seen this dream and what God had determined to do was awake he bare this dream in minde and until night by all means was desirous to know it CHAP. XII 2 The conspiracy of the two eunuchs is discovered by Mardocheus 5 for which he is entertained by the king and rewarded ANd Mardocheus took his rest in the court with Gabatha and Tharra the two eunuchs of the king and keepers of the palace 2 * Esth 2. ●1 6.2 And he heard their devices and searched out their purposes and learned that they were about to lay hands upon Artaxerxes the king and so he certified the king of them 3 Then the king examined the two eunuchs and after that they had confessed it they were strangled 4 And the king made a record of these things and Mardocheus also wrote thereof 5 So the king commanded Mardocheus to serve in the court and for this he rewarded him 6 Howbeit Aman the son of Amadathus the Agagite who was in great honour with the king sought to molest Mardocheus and his people because of the two eunuchs of the king CHAP. XIII 1 The copy of the kings letters to destroy the Jews 8 The prayer of Mardocheus for them THe copy of the letters was this Joseph Ant●● lib. 11. cap. 6. The great king Artaxerxes writeth these things to the princes and governours that are under him from India unto Ethiopia in an hundred and seven and twenty provinces 2 After that I became lord over many nations and had dominion over the whole world not lifted up with presumption of my authority but carrying my self alway with equity and mildness I purposed to settle my subjects continually in a quiet life and making my kingdom ‖ Or ●ildt peaceable and open for passage to the utmost coasts to renew peace which is desired of all men 3 Now when I asked my counsellours how this might be brought to pass Aman that excelled in wisdom among us and was approved for his constant good will and stedfast fidelity and had the honour of the second place in the kingdom 4 Declared unto us that in all nations throughout the world there was scattered a certain malicious people that had laws contrary to all nations and continually despised the commandments of kings so as the uniting of our kingdoms honourably intended by us cannot ‖ Or be settled go forward 5 Seeing then we understand that this people alone is continually in opposition unto all men differing in the strange manner of their laws and evil-affected to our state working all the mischief they can that our kingdom may not be firmly stablished 6 Therefore have we commanded that all they that are signified in writing unto you by Aman who is ordained over the affairs and is ‖ Or second from us next unto us shall all with their wives and children be utterly destroyed by the sword of their enemies without all mercy and pity the fourteenth day of the twelfth moneth Adar of this present year 7 That they who of old and now also are malicious may in one day with violence go into the grave and so ever hereafter cause our affairs to be well settled and without trouble 8 Then Mardocheus thought upon all the works of the Lord and made his prayer unto him 9 Saying O Lord Lord the King Almighty for the whole world is in thy power and if thou hast appointed to save Israel there is no man that can gainsay thee 10 For thou hast made heaven and earth and all the wondrous things under the heaven 11 Thou art Lord of all things and there is no man that can resist thee which art the Lord. 12 Thou knowest all things and thou knowest Lord that it was neither in contempt nor pride nor for any desire of glory that I did not how down to proud Aman. 13 For I could have been content with good will for the salvation of Israel to kiss the soles of his feet 14 But I did this that I might not prefer the glory of man above the glory of God neither will I worship any but thee O God neither will I do it in pride 15 And now O Lord God and King spare thy people for their eyes are upon us to bring us to nought yea they desire to destroy the inheritance that hath been thine from the beginning 16 Despise not the portion which thou hast delivered out of Egypt for thine own self 17 Hear my prayer and be merciful unto thine inheritance turn our sorrow into joy that we may live O Lord and praise thy name and ‖ Or ●●ut or stop not destroy not the mouths of them that praise thee O Lord. 18 All Israel in like manner cried most † Gr. mightily earnestly unto the Lord because their death was before their eyes CHAP. XIV 1 The prayer of queen Esther for her self and her people QUeen Esther also being in fear of death reforted unto the Lord 2 And laid away her glorious apparel and put on the garments of anguish and mourning and in stead of precious ointments she
covered her head with ashes and dung and she humbled her body greatly and all the places of her joy she fided with her torn hair 3 And she prayed unto the Lord God of Israel saying O my Lord thou onely art our King help me desolate woman which have no helper but thee 4 * 1 Sam. 〈◊〉 28.21 Job 13.14 Ps 119.109 For my danger is in mine hand 5 From my youth up I have heard in the tribe of my family that thou O Lord tookest Israel from among all people and our fathers from all their predecessours for a perpetual inheritance and thou hast performed whatsoever thou didst promise them 6 And now we have sinned before thee therefore hast thou given us into the hands of our enemies 7 Because we worshipped their gods O Lord thou artrighteous 8 Nevertheless it satisfieth them not that we are in bitter captivity but they have stricken hands with their idols 9 That they will abolish the thing that thou with thy mouth hast ordained and destroy thine inheritance and stop the mouth of them that praise thee and quench the glory of thy house and of thine altar 10 And open the mouths of the heathen to set forth the praises of the † Gr. vain things idols and to magnifie a fleshly king for ever 11 O Lord give not thy sceptre unto them that † Gr. be not be nothing and let them not laugh at our fall but turn their device upon themselves and make him an example that hath begun this against us 12 Remember O Lord make thy self known in time of our affliction and give me boldness O King of the ‖ Or gods nations and Lord of all power 13 Give me eloquent speech in my mouth before the lion turn his heart to hate him that fighteth against us that there may be an end of him and of all that are like-minded to him 14 But deliver us with thine hand and help me that am desolate and which have no other helper but thee 15 Thou knowest all things O Lord thou knowest that I hate the glory of the unrighteous and abhor the bed of the uncircumcised and of † Gr. every stranger all the heathen 16 Thou knowest my necessity for I abhor the signe of my † Gr. pride high estate which is upon mine head in the days wherein I shew my self and that I abhor it as a menstruous rag and that I wear it not when I am † Gr. quiet or private private by my self 17 And that thine hand-maid hath not eaten at Amans table and that I have not greatly esteemed the kings feast nor drunk the wine of the drink-offerings 18 Neither had thine hand maid any joy since the day † Gr. of my change that I was brought hither to this present but in thee O Lord God of Abraham 19 O thou mighty God above all hear the voice of the forlorn and deliver us out of the hands of the mischievous and deliver me out of my fear CHAP. XV. 6 Esther cometh into the kings presence 7 He looketh angerly and she fainteth 8 The king doth take her up and comfort her ANd upon the third day when she had ended her prayer she laid away her mourning garments and ●●t on her glorious apparel 2 And being gloriously adorned after she had called upon God who is the beholder and Saviour of all things she took two maids with her 3 And upon the one she leaned as carrying her self ‖ Or delicath daintily 4 And the other followed bearing up her train 5 And she was ‖ Or rose-coloured ruddy through the perfection of her beauty and her countenance was cheerful and ‖ Or as amiable or smiline very amiable but her heart was in anguish for fear 6 Then having passed through all the doors she stood before the king who sat upon his royal throne and was clothed with all his robes of majesty all glittering with gold and precious stones and he was very dreadful 7 Then lifting up his countenance that hone with majesty he looked very fiercely upon her and the queen fell down and was pale and fainted and bowed her self upon the head of the maid that went ‖ Or with her or by her before her 8 Then God changed the spirit of the king into mildness who † Gr. in an agony in a fear leaped from his throne and took her in his arms till she came to her self again and comforted her with loving words and said unto her 9 Esther what is the matter I am thy brother be of good cheer 10 Thou shalt not die though our commandment be ‖ Or as well thie● as mine general come near 11 And so he held up his golden sceptre and laid it upon her neck 12 And embraced her and said Speak unto me 13 Then she said unto him I saw thee my lord as an angel of God and my heart was troubled for fear of thy majesty 14 For wonderful art thou lord and thy countenance is full of grace 15 And as she was speaking ‖ Or she fell in a swoon she fell down for faintness 16 Then the king was troubled and all his servants comforted her CHAP. XVI 1 The letter of Artaxerxes 10 wherein be taxeth Aman 17 and revoketh the decree procured by Aman to destroy the Jews 22 and commandeth the day of their deliverance to be kept holy THe great king Artaxerxes unto the princes and governours of an hundred and seven and twenty provinces from India unto Ethiopia Joseph Ant. l. 11. c. 6. and unto all ‖ Or well-affected to our state our faithful subjects greeting 2 Many the more often they are honoured with the great bounty of † Gr. their benefactors their gracious princes the more proud they are waxen 3 And endeavour to hurt not our subjects onely but not being able to bear abundance do take in hand to practise also against those that do them good 4 And take not onely thankfulness away from among men but also lifted up with the glorious words of ‖ Or needy lewd persons ‖ Or that never casted prosperity that were never good they think to escape the justice of God that seeth all things and hateth evil 5 Oftentimes also fair speech ‖ Or of our friends put in trust to manage the affairs of those that are put in trust to manage their friends affairs hath caused many that are in authority to be partakers of innocent bloud and hath enwrapped them in remediless calamities 6 Beguiling with the falshood and deceit of their lewd disposition the innocency and goodness of princes 7 Now ye may see this as we have declared not so much by ancient histories as ye may if ye search what hath been wickedly done of late through the pestilent behaviour of them that are unworthily placed in authority 8 And we must take care for the time to come that our kingdom may be quiet and
