XX. 1 Of him that giveth of his seed to Molech 4 Of him that favoureth such an one 6 Of going to wizards 7 Of sanctification 9 Of him that curseth his parents 10 Of adultery 11 14 17 19 Of incest 13 Of Sodomy 15 Of bestiality 18 Of uncleanness 22 Obedience is required with holiness 27 Wizards must be put to death ANd the LORD spake unto Moses saying 2 * Chap. 18.21 Again thou shalt say to the children of Israel Whosoever he be of the children of Israel or of the strangers that sojourn in Israel that giveth any of his see● unto Molech he shall surely be put to death the people of the land shall stone him with stones 3 And I will set my face against that man and will cut him off from among his people because he hath given of his seed unto Molech to defile my sanctuary and to profane my holy name 4 And if the people of the land do any ways hide their eyes from the man when he giveth of his seed unto Molech and kill him not 5 Then I will set my face against that man and against his family and will cut him off and all that go a whoring after him to commit whoredom with Molech from among their people 6 ¶ And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits and after wizards to go a whoring after them I will even set my face against that soul and will cut him off from among his people 7 ¶ * Chap. 11.44 19.2 1 Pet. 1.16 Sanctifie your selves therefore and be ye holy for I am the LORD your God 8 And ye shall keep my statutes and do them I am the LORD which sanctifie you 9 ¶ * Ex. 21.17 Prov. 20.20 Mat. 15.4 For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death he hath cursed his father or his mother his bloud shall be upon him 10 ¶ And * Deut. 22.22 Joh. 8.4 5. the man that committeth adultery with another mans wife even be that committeth adultery with his neighbours wife the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death 11 * Chap. 18.8 And the man that lieth with his fathers wife hath uncovered his fathers nakedness both of them shall surely be put to death their bloud shall be upon them 12 And if a man lie with his daughter in law both of them shall surely be put to death they have wrought confusion their bloud shall be upon them 13 * Chap. 18.22 If a man also lie with mankinde as he lieth with a woman both of them have committed an abomination they shall surely be put to death their bloud shall be upon them 14 And if a man take a wife her mother it is wickedness they shall be burnt with fire both he and they that there be no wickedness among you 15 * Chap. 18.23 And if a man lie with a beast he shall surely be put to death and ye shall slay the beast 16 And if a woman approach unto any beast and lie down thereto thou shalt kill the woman and the beast they shall surely be put to death their bloud shall be upon them 17 * Chap. 18.9 And if a man shall take his sister his fathers daughter or his mothers daughter and see her nakedness and she see his nakedness it is a wicked thing and they shall be cut off in the sight of their people he hath uncovered his sisters nakedness he shall bear his iniquity 18 * Chap. 18 19. nor of thy fathers sister for he uncovereth his near kin they shall bear their iniquity 20 And if a man shall lie with his uncles wife he hath uncovered his uncles nakedness they shall bear their sin they shall die childless 21 And if a man shall take his brothers wife ●t is † Heb. a separation an unclean thing he hath uncovered his brothers nakedness they shall be childless 22 ¶ Ye shall therefore keep all my * Chap. 18.26 statutes and all my judgements and do them that the land whither I bring you to dwell therein * Chap. 18.25 spue you not out 23 And ye shall not walk in the manners of the nation which I cast out before you for they committed all these things and * Deut. 9.5 therefore I abhorred them 24 But I have said unto you Ye shall inherit their land I will give it unto you to possess it a land that floweth with milk and honey I am the LORD your God which have separated you from other people 25 * Chap. 11.2 Deut. 14.4 Ye shall therefore put difference between clean beasts and unclean between unclean fowls and clean and ye shall not make your souls abominable by beast or by fowl or by any manner of living thing that ‖ Or moveth creepeth on the ground which I have separated from you as unclean 26 And ye shall be holy unto me * Vers 7. Chap. 19.2 1 Pet. ● 16 for I the LORD am holy and have severed you from other people that ye should be mine 27 ¶ * Deut. 18.11 1 Sam. 28.7 A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit or that is a wizard shall surely be put to death they shall stone them with stones their bloud s●all be upon them CHAP. XXI 1 Of the priests mourning 6 Of their h●liness 8 Of their estimation 7 13 Of their marriages 16 The priests that have blemishes must not mini●ter in the sanctuary ANd the LORD said unto Moses Speak unto the priests the sons of Aaron and say unto them There shall none be defiled for the dead among his people 2 But for his kin that is near unto him that is for his mother and for his father and for his son and for his daughter and for his brother 3 And for his sister a virgin that is nigh unto him which hath had no husband for her may he be defiled 4 But ‖ Or being an husband among his people be shall not defile himself for his wife c. he shall not defile himself being a chief man among his people to profane himself 5 * Chap. 19.27 They shall not make baldness upon their head neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard nor make any cuttings in their flesh 6 They shall be holy unto their God and not profane the name of their God for the offerings of the LORD made by fire and the bread of their God they do offer therefore they shall be holy 7 They shall not take a wife that is a whore or profane neither shall they take a woman put away from her husband for he is holy unto his God 8 Thou shalt sanctifie him therefore for he offereth the bread of thy God he shall be holy unto thee for I the LORD which sanctifie you am holy 9 ¶ And the daughter of any priest if she profane her self by playing the whore she profaneth her father she shall be burnt with fire 10 And he that is the high priest among his brethren upon whose head the anointing oyl was poured and that is consecrated to put on the garments shall not uncover his head nor rend his clothes 11 Neither shall he go in to any dead body nor defile himself for his father or for his mother 12 Neither shall he go out of the sanctuary nor profane the sanctuary of his God for the crown of the anointing oyl of his God is upon him I am the LORD 13 And he shall take a wife in her virgin●ty 14 A widow or a divorced woman or profane or an harlot these shall he not take but he shall take a virgin of his own people to wife 15 Neither shall he profane his seed among his people for I the LORD do sanctifie him 16 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 17 Speak unto Aaron saying Whosoever he be of thy seed in their generations that hath any blemish let him not approach to offer the ‖ Or food bread of his God 18 For whatsoever man he be that hath a blemish he shall not approach a blinde man or a lame or he that hath a flat nose or any thing * Chap. 22.23 superfluous 19 Or a man that is broken-footed or broken-handed 20 Or crook-backt or ‖ Or too slender a dwarf or that hath a blemish in his eye or be scurvy or scabbed or hath his stones broken 21 No man that hath a blemish of the seed of Aaron the priest shall come nigh to offer the offerings of the LORD made by fire he hath a blemish he shall not come nigh to offer the bread of his God 22 He shall eat the bread of his God both of the most holy and of the holy 23 Onely he shall not go in unto the vail nor come nigh unto the altar because he hath a blemish that he profane not my sanctuarie● for I the LORD do sanctifie them 24 And Moses told it unto Aaron and to his sons and unto all the children of Israel CHAP. XXII 1 The priests in their uncleanness must abstain from the holy things 6 How they shall be cleansed 10 Who of the priests house may eat of the holy things 17 The sacrifices must be without blemish 26 The age of the sacrifice 29 The law of eating the sacrifice of thanksgiving ANd the LORD spake unto Moses saying 2 Speak unto Aaron and to his sons that they separate themselves from the holy things of the children of Israel and that they profane not my holy name in those things which they hallow unto me I am the LORD 3 Say unto them Whosoever he be of all your seed among your generations that goeth unto the holy things which the children of Israel hallow unto the LORD having his uncleanness upon him that soul shall be cut off from my presence I am the LORD 4 What man soever of the seed of Aaron is a leper or hath * Chap. 15.2 a † Heb. running of the reins running issue he shall not eat of the holy things until he be clean And whoso toucheth any thing that is unclean by the dead or a man whose seed goeth from him 5 Or whosoever toucheth any creeping thing whereby he may be made unclean or a man of whom he may take uncleanness whatsoever uncleanness he hath 6 The soul which hath touched any such shall be unclean until even and shall not eat of the holy things unless he wash his flesh with water

Mat. 5.38 he hath done so shall it be done unto him 20 Breach for breach eye for eye tooth for tooth as he hath caused a blemish in a man so shall it be done to him again 21 And he that killeth a beast he shall restore it and he that killeth a man he shall be put to death 22 Ye shall have * Ex. 12.49 one manner of law as well for the stranger as for one of your own countrey for I am the LORD your God 23 ¶ And Moses spake unto the children of Israel that they should bring forth him that had cursed out of the camp and stone him with stones and the children of Israel did a● the LORD commanded Moses CHAP. XXV 1 The sabbath of the seventh year 8 The jubile in the fiftieth year 14 Of Oppression 18 A blessing of obedience 23 The redemption of land 29 of houses 35 Compassion of the poor 39 The usage of bond-men 47 〈◊〉 redempt●on of servants ANd the LORD spake unto Moses in mount Sinai saying 2 Speak unto the children of Israel and say unto them When ye come into the land which I give you then shall the land † Heb. rest keep * Ex. 23.10 a sabbath unto the LORD 3 Six years thou shalt sowe thy field and six years thou shalt prune thy vineyard and gather in the fruit thereof 4 But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land a sabbath for the LORD thou shalt neither sowe thy field nor prune thy vineyard 5 That which groweth of it own accord of thy harvest thou shalt not reap neither gather the grapes † Heb. of thy se●aration of thy vine undressed for it is a year of rest unto the land 6 And the sabbath of the land shall be meat for you for thee and for thy servant and for thy maid and for thy hired servant and for thy stranger that sojourneth with thee 7 And for thy cattel and for the beast that are in thy land shall all the increase thereof be meat 8 ¶ And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee seven times seven years and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be unto thee fourty and nine years 9 Then shalt thou cause the trumpet † Heb. loud of sound of the jubile to sound on the tenth day of the seventh moneth in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land 10 And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof it shall be a jubile unto you and ye shall return every man unto his possession and ye shall return every man unto his family 11 A jubile shall that fiftieth year be unto you ye shall not sowe neither reap that which groweth of it self in it nor gather the grapes in it of thy vine undressed 12 For it is the jubile it shall be holy unto you ye shall eat the increase thereof out of the field 13 In the year of this jubile ye shall return every man unto his possession 14 And if thou sell ought unto thy neighbour or buyest ought of thy neighbours hand ye shall not oppress one another 15 According to the number of years after the jubile thou shalt buy of thy neighbour and according unto the number of years of the fruits he shall sell unto thee 16 According to the multitude of years thou shalt increase the price thereof and according to the fewness of years thou shalt diminish the price of it for according to the number of the years of the fruits doth he sell unto thee 17 Ye shall not therefore oppress one another but thou shalt fear thy God For I am the LORD your God 18 ¶ Wherefore ye shall do my statutes and keep my judgements and do them and ye shall dwell in the land in safety 19 And the land shall yeeld her fruit and ye shall eat your fill and dwell therein in safety 20 And if ye shall say What shall we eat the seventh year behold we shall not sowe nor gather in our increase 21 Then I will command my blessing upon you in the sixth year and it shall bring forth fruit for three years 22 And ye shall sowe the eighth year and eat yet of old fruit until the ninth year until her fruits come in ye shall eat of the old store 23 ¶ The land shall not be sold ‖ Or to be quite cut off † Heb. for cutting off for ever for the land is mine for ye are strangers and sojourners with me 24 And in all the land of your possession ye shall grant a redemption for the land 25 ¶ If thy brother be waxen poor and hath sold away some of his possession and if any of his kin come to redeem it then shall he redeem that which his brother sold 26 And if the man have none to redeem it and † Heb. his hand hath attained and found sufficiency himself be able to redeem it 27 Then let him count the years of the sale thereof and restore the overplus unto the man to whom he sold it that he may return unto his possession 28 But if he be not able to restore it to him then that which is sold shall remain in the hand of him that hath bought it until the year of jubile and in the jubile it shall go out and he shall return unto his possession 29 And if a man sell a dwelling-house in a walled city then he may redeem it within a whole year after it is sold within a ●ull year may he redeem it 30 And if it be not redemed within the space of a full year then the house that is in the walled city shall be established for ever to him that bought it throughout his generations it shall not go out in the jubile 31 But the houses of
shall first set forth 10 ¶ On the south-side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their armies and the captain of the children of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur 11 And his host and those that were numbred thereof were fourty and six thousand and five hundred 12 And those which pitch by him shall be the tribe of Sim●on and the captain of the children of Simeon shall be Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai 13 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fifty and ●ine thousand and three hundred 14 Then the tribe of Gad and the captain of the sons of Gad shall be Eliasaph the son of Reuel 15 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty and five thousand and six hundred and fifty 16 All that were numbred in the camp of Reuben were an hundred thousand and fifty and one thousand and four hundred and fifty throughout their armies and they shall set forth in the second rank 17 ¶ Then the tabernacle of the congregation shall set forward with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camp as they encamp so shall they set forward every man in his place by their standards 18 ¶ On the west-side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their armies and the captain of the sons of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud 19 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty thousand and five hundred 20 And by him shall be the tribe of Manasseh and the captain of the children of Manasseh shall be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur 21 And his host and those that were numbred of them were thirty and two thousand and two hundred 22 Then the tribe of Benjamin and the captain of the sons of Benjamin shall be Abidan the son of Gideoni 23 And his host and those that were numbred of them were thirty and five thousand and four hundred 24 All that were numbred of the camp of Ephraim were an hundred thousand and eight thousand and an hundred throughout their armies and they shall go forward in the third rank 25 ¶ The standard of the camp of Dan shall be on the north-side by their armies and the captain of the children of Dan shall be Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai 26 And his host and those that were numbred of them were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred 27 And those that encamp by him shall be the tribe of Asher and the captain of the children of Asher shall be Pagiel the son of Ocran 28 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty and one thousand and five hundred 29 Then the tribe of Naphtali and the captain of the children of Naphtali shall be Ahira the son of Enan 30 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fifty and three thousand and four hundred 31 All they that were numbred in the camp of Dan were an hundred thousand and fifty and seven thousand and six hundred they shall go hindmost with their standards 32 ¶ These are those which were numbred of the children of Israel by the house of their fathers all those that were numbred of the camps throughout their hosts were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty 33 But the Levites were not numbred among the children of Israel as the LORD commanded Moses 34 And the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses so they pitched by their standards and so they set forward every one after their families according to the house of their fathers CHAP. III. 1 The sons of Aaron 5 The Levites are given to the priests for the service of the tabernacle● 11 in stead of the first-born 14 The Levites are numbred by their families 21 The families number and charge of the Gershonites 27 of the Ko●athites 33 of the Merarites 38 The place and charge of Moses and Aaron 40 The first-born are freed by the Levites 44 The overplus are redeemed THese also are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that the LORD spake with Moses in mount Sinai 2 And these are the names of the sons of Aaron Nadab the * Exod. 6.23 first-born and Abihu Eleazar and Ithamar 3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron the priests which were anointed † Heb. whose hand be filled whom he consecrated to minister in the priests office 4 * Lev. 10.1 Ch. 26.61 1 Chr. 24.2 And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD when they offered strange fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai and they had no children and Eleazar and Ithamar ministred in the priests office in the sight of Aaron their father 5 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 6 Bring the tribe of Levi near and present them before Aaron the priest that they may minister unto him 7 And they shall keep his charge and the charge of the whole congregation before the tabernacle of the congregation to do the service of the tabernacle 8 And they shall keep all the instruments of the tabernacle of the congregation and the charge of the children of Israel to do the service of the tabernacle 9 And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons they are wholly given unto him out of the children of Israel 10 And thou shalt appoint Aaron and his sons and they shall wait on their priests office and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death 11 ¶ And the LORD spake unte Moses saying 12 And I behold I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel in stead of all the first-born that openeth the matrice among the children of Israel therefore the Levites shall be mine 13 Because all the first-born are mine * Exod. 13.2 Lev. 27.26 Chap. 8.16 Luk. 2.23 for on the day that I smote all the first born in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto me all the first-born in Israel both man and beast mine they shall be I am the LORD 14 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai saying 15 Number the children of Levi after the house of their fathers by their families every male from a moneth old and upward shalt thou number them 16 And Moses numbred them according to the † Heb. mouth word of the LORD as he was commanded 17 * Gen. 46.11 Exod. 6.16 Ch. 26.57 1 Chro. 6.1 And these were the sons of Levi by their names Gershon and Kohath and Merari 18 And these are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families Libni and Shimei 19 And the sons of Kohath by their families Amram and Izehar Hebron and Uzziel 20 And the sons of Merari by their families Mahli and Mushi these are the families of the Levites according to the house of their fathers 21 Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites and the family
of the Shimites these are the families of the Gershonites 22 Those that were numbred of them according to the number of all the males from a moneth old and upward even those that were numbred of them were seven thousand and five hundred 23 The families of the Gershonites shall pitch behinde the tabernacle west-ward 24 And the chief of the house of the father of the Gershonites shall be Eliasaph the son of Lael 25 And the charge of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation shall be the tabernacle and the tent the covering thereof and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation 26 And the hangings of the court and the curtain for the door of the court which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about and the cords of it for all the service thereof 27 ¶ And of Kohath was the family of the Amramites and the family of the Izeharites and the family of the Hebronites and the family of the Uzzielites these are the families of the Kohathites 28 In the number of all the males from a moneth old and u●ward were eight thousand six hundred keeping the charge of the sanct●ary 29 The families of the sons of Kohath shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle south-ward 30 And the chief of the house of the father of the families of the Kohathites shall be Elizaphan the son of Uzziel 31 And their charge shall be the ark and the table and the candlestick and the altars and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith they minister and the hanging and all the service thereof 32 And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be chief over the chief of the Levites and have the oversight of them that keep the charge of the sanctuary 33 ¶ Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites and the family of the Mushites these are the families of Merari 34 And those that were numbred of them according to the number of all the males from a moneth old and upward were six thousand and two hundred 35 And the chief of the house of the father of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail these shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle north-ward 36 And † Heb. the office of the charge under the custody and charge of the sons of Merari shall be the boards of the tabernacle and the bars thereof and the pillars thereof and the sockets thereof and all the vessels thereof and all that serveth thereto 37 And the pillars of the court round about and their sockets and their pins and their cords 38 ¶ But those that encamp before the tabernacle toward the east even before the tabernacle of the congregation east-ward shall be Moses and Aaron and his sons keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Israel and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death 39 All that were numbred of the Levites which Moses and Aaron numbred at the commandment of the LORD throughout their families all the males from a moneth old and upward were twenty and two thousand 40 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Number all the first-born of the males of the children of Israel from a moneth old and upward and take the number of their names 41 And thou shalt take the Levites for me I am the LORD in stead of all the first-born among the children of Israel and the cattel of the Levites instead of all the firstlings among the cattel of the children of Israel 42 And Moses numbred as the LORD commanded him all the first-born among the children of Israel 43 And all the first-born males by the number of names from a moneth old and upward of those that were numbred of them were twenty and two thousand two hundred and threescore and thirteen 44 And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 45 Take the Levites in stead of all the first-born among the children of Israel and the cattel of the Levites in stead of their cattel and the Levites shall be mine I am the LORD 46 And for those that are to be redeemed of the two hundred and threescore and thirteen of the first-born of the children of Israel which are more then the Levites 47 Thou shalt even take five shekels a piece by the poll after the shekel of the sanctuary shalt thou take them * Exod. 30.13 Lev. 27.25 Ch. 18.16 Ezek. 45.12 the shekel is twenty gerahs 48 And thou shalt give the money wherewith the odd number of them is to be redeemed unto Aaron and to his sons 49 And Moses took the redemption-money of them that were over and above them that were redeemed by the Levites 50 Of the first-born of the children of Israel took he the money a thousand three hundred and threescore and five shekels after the shekel of the sanctuary 51 And Moses gave the money of them that were redeemed unto Aaron and to his sons according to the word of the LORD as the LORD commanded Moses CHAP. IV. 1 The age and time of the Levites service 4 The carriage of the Kohathites when the priests have taken down the tabernacle 16 The charge of Eleazar 17 The office of the priests 21 The carriage of the Gershonites 29 The carriage of the Merarites 34 The number of the Kohathites 38 of the Gershonites 42 and of the Merarites ANd the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron saying 2 Take the sum of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi after their families by the house of their fathers 3 From thirty years old upward even until fifty years old all that enter into the host to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation 4 This shall be the service of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation about the most holy things 5 ¶ And when the camp setteth forward Aaron shall come and his sons and they shall take down the covering vail and cover the ark of testimony with it 6 And shall put thereon the covering of badgers skins and shall spread over it a cloth wholly of blue and shall put in the staves thereof 7 And upon the * Ex. 25.30 table of shew-bread they shall spread a cloth of blue and put thereon the dishes and the spoons and the bowls and covers to ‖ Or pour out withal cover withal and the continual bread shall be thereon 8 And they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet and cover the same with a covering of badgers skins and shall put in the staves thereof 9 And they shall take a cloth of blue and cover the * Exod. 25.31 candlestick of the light * Exod. 25.37 38. and his lamps and his tongs and his snuff-dishes and all the oyl-vessels thereof wherewith they m●nister unto it 10 And they shall put it and all the vessels thereof within a covering of badgers skins and shall put it upon a bar 11 And

XXXV 1 Eight and fourty cities for the Levites with their subur●s and measure thereof 6 Six of them are to be cities of refuge 9 The laws of murder 31 No satisfaction for murder ANd the LORD spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho saying 2 * Josh 21. ● Command the children of Israel that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in and ye shall give also unto the Levites suburbs for the cities round about them 3 And the cities shall they have to dwell in and the suburbs of them shall be for their cattel and for their goods and for all their beasts 4 And the suburbs of the cities which ye shall give unto the Levites shall reach from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits round about 5 And ye shall measure from without the city on the east-side two thousand cubits and on the south-side two thousand cubits and on the west side two thousand cubits and on the north-side two thousand cubits and the city shall be that the slayer may flee thither which killeth any person † Heb. by errour at unawares 12 And they shall be unto you cities for refuge from the avenger that the man-slayer die not until he stand before the congregation in judgement 13 And of these cities which ye shall give six cities shall ye have for refuge 14 Ye shall give three cities on this side Jordan and three cities shall ye give in the land of Canaan which shall be cities of refuge 15 These six cities shall be a refuge both for the children of Israel and for the stranger and for the sojourner among them that every one that killeth any person unawares may flee thither 16 * Exod. 21.14 And if he smite him with an instrument of iron so that he die he is a murderer the murderer shall surely be put to death 17 And if he smite him † Heb. with a stone of the band with throwing a stone wherewith he may die and he die he is a murderer the murderer shall surely be put to death 18 Or if he smite him with an hand-weapon of wood wherewith he may die and he die he is a murderer the murderer shall surely be put to death 19 The revenger of bloud himself shall slay the murderer when he meeteth him he shall slay him 20 But * Deut. 19.11 if he thrust him of hatred or hurl at him by laying of wait that he die 21 Or in enmity smite him with his hand that he die he that smote him shall surely be put to death for he is a murderer the revenger of bloud shall slay the murderer when he meeteth him 22 But if he thrust him suddenly * Exod. 21. ●3 without enmity or have cast upon him any thing without laying of wait 23 Or with any stone wherewith a man may die seeing him not and cast it upon him that he die and was not his enemy neither sought his harm 24 Then the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the revenger of bloud according to these judgements 25 And the congregation shall deliver the slayer out of the hand of the revenger of bloud and the congregation shall restore him to the city of his refuge wither he was fled and he shall abide in it unto the death of the high priest which was anointed with the holy oyl 26 But if the slayer shall at any time come without the border of the city of his refuge whether he was fled 27 And the revenger of bloud finde him without the borders of the city of his refuge and the revenger of bloud kill the slayer † Heb. no bloud shall be to him he shall not be guilty of bloud 28 Because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest but after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of his possession 29 So these things shall be for a statute of judgement unto you throughout your generations in all your dwellings 30 Whoso killeth any person the murderer shall be put to death by the * III. 1 Lest their false teachers should charge him with vain-glory he sheweth the faith and graces of the Corinthians to be a sufficient commendation of his ministery 6 Whereupon entring a comparison between the ministers of the law and of the gospel 12 he proveth that his ministery is so far the more excellent as the gospel of life and liberty is more glorious then the law of condemnation DO we begin again to commend our selves or need we as some others epistles of commendation to you or letters of commendation from you 2 Ye are our epistle written in our hearts known read of all men 3 For as much as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministred by us written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God not in tables of stone but in fleshly tables of the heart 4 And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward 5 Not that we are sufficient of our selves to think any thing as of our selves but our sufficiency is of God 6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament not of the letter but of the spirit for the letter killeth but the spirit ‖ Or quickneth giveth life 7 But if the ministration of death written and engraven in stones was glorious so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance which glory was to be done away 8 How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious 9 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory 10 For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect by reason of the glory that excelleth 11 For if that which is done away was glorious much more that which remaineth is glorious 12 Seeing then that we have such hope we use great ‖ Or boldness plainness of speech 13 And not as Moses * Exod. 34.33 which put a vail over his face that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished 14 But their mindes were blinded for until this day remaineth the same vail unt●ken away in the reading of the old testament which vail is done away in Christ 15 But even unto this day when Moses is read the vail is upon their heart 16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord the vail shall be taken away 17 Now the Lord is that Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty 18 But we all with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord are changed into the same image from glory to glory even as ‖ Or of the Lord the Spirit by the Spirit of the Lord. CHAP. IV. 1 He declareth how he hath used all sincerity and faithful diligence in preaching the ●ospel 7 and how the troubles and persecutions which be daily endureth for the same did redound to the praise of Gods power 12 to the benefit of the church 16 and to the apostle's own eternal glory THerefore seeing we have this ministery as we have received mercy we faint not 2 But have renounced the hidden things of † Or. sh●me dishonesty not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully but by manifestation of the truth commending our selves to every mans conscience in the sight of God 3 But if our gospel be hid it is hid to them that are lost 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which beleeve not lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ who is the image of God should shine unto them 5 For we preach not our selves but Christ Jesus the Lord and our selves your servants for Jesus sake 6 For God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness hath shined in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ 7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels that the excellency of the power may be of God and not of us 8 We are troubled on every side yet not distressed we are perplexed but ‖ Or not altogether without help or means not in despair 9 Persecuted but not forsaken cast down but not destroyed 10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body 11 For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus sake that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh 12 So then death worketh in us but life in you 13 We having the same spirit of faith according as it is written * Psal 11● 10 I beleeved and therefore have I spoken we also beleeve and therefore speak 14 Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus and shall present us with you 15 For all things are for your sakes that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God 16 For which cause we faint not but though our outward man perish yet the inward man is renewed day by day 17 For our light affliction which is but for a moment worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory 18 While we look not at the things which are seen but at the things which are not seen for the things which are seen are temporal but the things which are not seen are eternal CHAP. V. 1 That in his assured hope of immortal glory 9 and in exp●ctance of it and of the general judgement he laboureth to keep a good conscirence 12 not that he may herein boast of himself 14 but as one that having received life from Christ endeavoureth to live as a new creature to Christ onely 18 and by his ministery of reconciliation to reconcile others also in Christ to God FOr we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved we have a building of God an house not made with hands eternal in the heavens 2 For in this we groan earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven 3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked 4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan being burdened not for that we would be unclothed but clothed upon that mortality might be swallowed up of life 5 Now he that hath wrought us for the self same thing is God who also hath given unto us the earnest of
