shall first set forth 10 ¶ On the south-side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their armies and the captain of the children of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur 11 And his host and those that were numbred thereof were fourty and six thousand and five hundred 12 And those which pitch by him shall be the tribe of Simâ—on and the captain of the children of Simeon shall be Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai 13 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fifty and â—ine thousand and three hundred 14 Then the tribe of Gad and the captain of the sons of Gad shall be Eliasaph the son of Reuel 15 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty and five thousand and six hundred and fifty 16 All that were numbred in the camp of Reuben were an hundred thousand and fifty and one thousand and four hundred and fifty throughout their armies and they shall set forth in the second rank 17 ¶ Then the tabernacle of the congregation shall set forward with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camp as they encamp so shall they set forward every man in his place by their standards 18 ¶ On the west-side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their armies and the captain of the sons of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud 19 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty thousand and five hundred 20 And by him shall be the tribe of Manasseh and the captain of the children of Manasseh shall be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur 21 And his host and those that were numbred of them were thirty and two thousand and two hundred 22 Then the tribe of Benjamin and the captain of the sons of Benjamin shall be Abidan the son of Gideoni 23 And his host and those that were numbred of them were thirty and five thousand and four hundred 24 All that were numbred of the camp of Ephraim were an hundred thousand and eight thousand and an hundred throughout their armies and they shall go forward in the third rank 25 ¶ The standard of the camp of Dan shall be on the north-side by their armies and the captain of the children of Dan shall be Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai 26 And his host and those that were numbred of them were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred 27 And those that encamp by him shall be the tribe of Asher and the captain of the children of Asher shall be Pagiel the son of Ocran 28 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty and one thousand and five hundred 29 Then the tribe of Naphtali and the captain of the children of Naphtali shall be Ahira the son of Enan 30 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fifty and three thousand and four hundred 31 All they that were numbred in the camp of Dan were an hundred thousand and fifty and seven thousand and six hundred they shall go hindmost with their standards 32 ¶ These are those which were numbred of the children of Israel by the house of their fathers all those that were numbred of the camps throughout their hosts were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty 33 But the Levites were not numbred among the children of Israel as the LORD commanded Moses 34 And the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses so they pitched by their standards and so they set forward every one after their families according to the house of their fathers CHAP. III. 1 The sons of Aaron 5 The Levites are given to the priests for the service of the tabernacleâ— 11 in stead of the first-born 14 The Levites are numbred by their families 21 The families number and charge of the Gershonites 27 of the Koâ—athites 33 of the Merarites 38 The place and charge of Moses and Aaron 40 The first-born are freed by the Levites 44 The overplus are redeemed THese also are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that the LORD spake with Moses in mount Sinai 2 And these are the names of the sons of Aaron Nadab the * Exod. 6.23 first-born and Abihu Eleazar and Ithamar 3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron the priests which were anointed †Heb. whose hand be filled whom he consecrated to minister in the priests office 4 * Lev. 10.1 Ch. 26.61 1 Chr. 24.2 And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD when they offered strange fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai and they had no children and Eleazar and Ithamar ministred in the priests office in the sight of Aaron their father 5 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 6 Bring the tribe of Levi near and present them before Aaron the priest that they may minister unto him 7 And they shall keep his charge and the charge of the whole congregation before the tabernacle of the congregation to do the service of the tabernacle 8 And they shall keep all the instruments of the tabernacle of the congregation and the charge of the children of Israel to do the service of the tabernacle 9 And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons they are wholly given unto him out of the children of Israel 10 And thou shalt appoint Aaron and his sons and they shall wait on their priests office and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death 11 ¶ And the LORD spake unte Moses saying 12 And I behold I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel in stead of all the first-born that openeth the matrice among the children of Israel therefore the Levites shall be mine 13 Because all the first-born are mine * Exod. 13.2 Lev. 27.26 Chap. 8.16 Luk. 2.23 for on the day that I smote all the first born in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto me all the first-born in Israel both man and beast mine they shall be I am the LORD 14 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai saying 15 Number the children of Levi after the house of their fathers by their families every male from a moneth old and upward shalt thou number them 16 And Moses numbred them according to the †Heb. mouth word of the LORD as he was commanded 17 * Gen. 46.11 Exod. 6.16 Ch. 26.57 1 Chro. 6.1 And these were the sons of Levi by their names Gershon and Kohath and Merari 18 And these are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families Libni and Shimei 19 And the sons of Kohath by their families Amram and Izehar Hebron and Uzziel 20 And the sons of Merari by their families Mahli and Mushi these are the families of the Levites according to the house of their fathers 21 Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites and the family
turned himself and went out from Pharaoh 7 And Pharaohs servants said unto him How long shall this man be a snare unto us Let the men go that they may serve the LORD their God Knowest thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed 8 And Moses and Aaron were brought again unto Pharaoh and he said unto them Go serve the LORD your God but †Heb. who and who c. who are they that shall go 9 And Moses said We will go with our young and with our old with our sons and with our daughters with our flocks and with our herds will we go for we must hold a feast unto the LORD 10 And he said unto them Let the LORD be so with you as I will let you go and your little ones look to it for evil is before you 11 Not so go now ye that are men and serve the LORD for that you did desire And they were driven out from Pharaohs presence 12 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Stretch out thine hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts that they may come up upon the land of Egypt and eat every herb of the land even all that the hail hath left 13 And Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt and the LORD brought an east-wind upon the land all that day and all that night and when it was morning the east-wind brought the locusts 14 And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt and rested in all the coasts of Egypt very grievous were they before them there were no such locusts as they neither after them shall be such 15 For they covered the face of the whole earth so that the land was darkned and they did eat every herb of the land and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left and there remained not any green thing in the trees or in the herbs of the field through all the land of Egypt 16 ¶ Then Pharaoh †Heb. hastned to call called for Moses and Aaron in haste and he he said I have sinned against the LORD your God and against you 17 Now therefore forgive I pray thee my sin onely this once and intreat the LORD your God that he may take away from me this death onely 18 And he went out from Pharaoh and intreated the LORD 19 And the LORD turned a mighty strong west-wind which took away the locusts and †Heb. fastned cast them into the Red sea there remained not one locust in all the coasts of Egypt 20 But the LORD hardned Pharaohs heart so that he would not let the children of Israel go 21 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Stretch out thine hand toward heaven that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt †Heb. that one may feel darkness even darkness which may be felt 22 And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days 23 They saw not one another neither rose any from his place for three days * Wisd 18.1 but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings 24 ¶ And Pharaoh called unto Moses and said Go ye serve the LORD onely let your flocks and your herds be stayed let your little ones also go with you 25 And Moses said Thou must give †Heb. into our hands us also sacrifices and burnt-offerings that we may sacrifice unto the LORD our God 26 Our cattel also shall go with us there shall not an hoof be left behinde for thereof must we take to serve the LORD our God and we know not with what we must serve the LORD until we come thither 27 ¶ But the LORD hardned Pharaohs heart and he would not let them go 28 And Pharaoh said unto him Get thee from me take heed to thy self see my face no more for in that day thou seest my face thou shalt die 29 And Moses said Thou hast spoken well I will see thy face again no more CHAP. XI 1 Gods message to the Israelites to borrow jewels of their neighbours 4 Moses threatneth Pharaoh with the death of the first-born ANd the LORD said unto Moses Yet will I bring one plague more upon Pharaph and upon Egypt afterwards he will let you go hence when he shall let you go he shall surely thrust you out hence altogether 2 Speak now in the ears of the people and let every man borrow of his neighbour and every woman of her neighbour * Chap. â— 22 and 12 35. jewels of silver and jewels of gold 3 And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians Moreover the man * Eccluâ— 45.1 Moses was very great in the land of Egypt in the sight of Pharaohs servants and in the sight of the people 4 And Moses said Thus saith the LORD * Chap. 12.29 About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt 5 And all the first-born in the land of Egypt shall die from the first-born of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne even unto the first-born of the maid servant that is behinde the mill and all the first-born of beasts 6 And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt such as there was none like it nor shall be like it any more 7 But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue against man or beast that ye may know how that the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel 8 And all these thy servants shall come down unto me and bow down themselves unto me saying Get thee out and all the people †Heb. that is at thy feet that follow thee and after that I will go out and he went out from Pharaoh in †Heb. heat of anger a great anger 9 And the LORD said unto Moses Pharaoh shall not hearken unto you that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt 10 And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh and the LORD hardned Pharaohs heart so that he would not let the children of Israel go out of his land CHAP. XII 1 The beginning of the year is changed 3 The pass-over is instituted 11 The rice of the pass-over 15Vnleavened bread 29 The first-born are slain 31 The Israelites are driven out of the land 37 They come to Succoth 43 The ordinance of the pass-over ANd the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt saying 2 This moneth shall be unto you the beginning of moneths it shall be the first moneth of the year to you 3 ¶ Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel saying In the tenth day of this moneth they shall take to them every man a ‖ Or kid lamb according to the house of their fathers a lamb for an house 4 And if the hoâ—â—hold be too little for the lamb let him his neighbour next unto his
him that †Heb. doeth sinneth through ignorance both for him that is born amongst the children of Israel and for the stranger that sojourneth among them 30 ¶ But the soul that doeth ought †Heb. with an high hand presumptuously whether he be born in the land or a stranger the same reproacheth the LORD and that soul shall be cut off from among his people 31 Because he hath despised the word of the LORD and hath broken his commandment that soul shall utterly be cut off his iniquity shall be upon him 32 ¶ And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness they found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath-day 33 And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron and unto all the congregation 34 And they put him * Lev. 24.12 in ward because it was not declared what should be done to him 35 And the LORD said unto Moses The man shall be surely put to death all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp 36 And all the congregation brought him without the camp and stoned him with stones and he died as the LORD commanded Moses 37 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 38 Speak unto the children of Israel and bid * Deut. 22.12 Mat. 23.5 them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue 39 And it shall be unto you for a fringe that ye may look upon it and remember all the commandments of the LORD and do them and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes after which ye use to go a whoring 40 That ye may remember and do all my commandments and be holy unto your God 41 I am the LORD your God which brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God I am the LORD your God CHAP. It is much for you Ye take too much upon you seeing all the congregation are holy everyone of them and the LORD is among them wherefore then lift you up your selves above the congregation of the LORD 4 And when Moses heard it he fell upon his face 5 And he spake unto Korah and unto all his company saying Even to morrow the LORD will shew who are his and who is holy and will cause him to come near unto him even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to come near unto him 6 This do take you censers Korah and all his company 7 And put fire therein and put incense in them before the LORD to morrow and it shall be that the man whom the LORD doth choose he shall be holy ye take too much upon you ye sons of Levi. 8 And Moses said unto Korah Hear I pray you ye sons of Levi 9 Seemeth it but a small thing unto you that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them 10 And he hath brought thee near to him and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee and seek ye the priesthood also 11 For which cause both thou and all thy company are gathered together against the LORD and what is Aaron that ye murmure against him 12 ¶ And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab which said We will not come up 13 Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land that floweth with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness except thou make thy self altogether a prince over us 14 Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land that floweth with milk and honey or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards wilt thou †Heb. here out put out the eyes of these men we will not come up 15 And Moses was very wroth and said unto the LORD * Gen. 4 4. Respect not thou their offering I have not taken one ass from them neither have I hurt one of them 16 And Moses said unto Korah Be thou and all thy company before the LORD thou and they and Aaron to morrow 17 And take every man his censer and put incense in them and bring ye before the LORD every man his censer two hundred and fifty censers thou also and Aaron each of you his censer 18 And they took every man his censer and put fire in them and said incense thereon and stood in the door of the tabernacle of the congregation with Moses and Aaron 19 And Korah gathered all the congregation against them unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the congregation 20 And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron saying 21 Separate your selves from among this congregation that I may consume them in a moment 22 And they fell upon their faces and said O God the God of the spirits of all flesh shall one man sin and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation 23 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 24 Speak unto the congregation saying Get you up from about the taberlacle of Korah Dathan and Abiram 25 And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram and the elders of Israel followed him 26 And he spake unto the congregation saying Depart I pray you from the tents of these wicked men and touch nothing of theirs lest ye be consumed in all their sins 27 So they gat up from the tabernacle of Korah Dathan and Abiram on every side and Dathan and Abiram came out and stood in the door of their tents and their wives and their sons and their little children 28 And Moses said Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works for I have not done them of mine own minde 29 If these men die †Heb. as every man dieth the common death of all men or if they be visited after the visitation of all men then

The tabernacle his tent and his covering his taches and his boards his bars his pillars and his sockets 12 The ark and the staves thereof with the mercy-seat and the vail of the covering 13 The table and his staves and all his vessels and the shew-bread 14 The candlestick also for the light and his furniture and his lamps with the oyl for the light 15 * Chap. 30.1 And the incense-altar and his staves and the anointing oyl and the sweet incense and the hanging for the door at the entring in of the tabernacle 16 * Chap. 27.1 The altar of burnt-offering with his brasen grate his staves and all his vessels the laver and his foot 17 The hangings of the court his pillars and their sockets and the hanging for the door of the court 18 The pins of the tabernacle the pins of the court and their cords 19 The clothes of service to do service in the holy place the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments of his sons to minister in the priests office 20 ¶ And all the congregation of the children of Israel departed from the presence of Moses 21 And they came every one whose heart stirred him up and every one whom his spirit made willing and they brought the LORDS offering to the work of the tabernacle of the congregation and for all his service and for the holy garments 22 And they came both men and women as many as were willing-hearted and brought bracelets and ear-rings and rings and tablets all jewels of gold and every man that offered offered an offering of gold unto the LORD 23 And every man with whom was found blue and purple and scarlet and fine linen and goats hair and red skins of rams and badgers skins brought them 24 Every one that did offer an offering of silver and brass brought the LORDS offering and every man with whom was found shittim-wood for any work of the service brought it 25 And all the women that were wise-hearted did spin with their hands and brought that which they had spun both of blue and of purple and of scarlet and of fine linen 26 And all the women whose heart stirred them up in wisdom spun goats hair 27 And the rulers brought onyx-stones and stones to be set for the ephod and for the breast-plate 28 And * Chap 30.23 spice and oyl for the light and for the anointing oyl and for the sweet incense 29 The children of Israel brought a willing offering unto the LORD every man and woman whose heart made them willing to bring for all manner of work which the LORD had commanded to be made by the hand of Moses 30 ¶ And Moses said unto the children of Israel See * Chap. 31.2 the LORD hath called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri the son of Hur of the tribe of Judah 31 And he hath filled him with the spirit of God in wisdom in understanding and in knowledge and in all manner of workmanship 32 And to devise curious works to work in gold and in silver and in brass 33 And in the cutting of stones to set them and in carving of wood to make any manner of cunning work 34 And he hath put in his heart that he may teach both he and Aholiab the son of Ahisamach of the tribe of Dan. 35 Them hath he filled with wisdom of heart to work all manner of work of the engraver and of the cunning workman and of the embroiderer in blue and in purple in scarlet and in fine linen and of the weaver even of them that do any work and of those that devise cunning work CHAP. XXXVI 1 The offerings are delivered to the workmen 5 The liberality of the people is restrained 8 The curtains of cherubims 14 The curtains of goats hair 19 The covering of skins 20 The boards with their sockets 31 The bars 35 The vail 37 The hanging for the door THen wrought Bezaleel and Aholiab and every wise-hearted man in whom the LORD put wisdom and understanding to know how to work all manner of work for the service of the sanctuary according to all that the LORD had commanded 2 And Moses called Bezaleel and Aholiab and every wise-hearted man in whose heart the LORD had put wisdom even every one whose heart stirred him up to come unto the work to do it 3 And they received of Moses all the offering which the children of Israel had brought for the work of the service of the sanctuary to make it withal And they brought yet unto him free-offerings every morning 4 And all the wise men that wrought all the work of the sanctuary came every man from his work which they made 5 ¶ And they spake unto Moses saying The people bring much more then enough for the service of the work which the LORD commanded to make 6 And Moses gave commandment and they caused it to be proclaimed throughout the camp saying Let neither man nor woman make any more work for the offering of the sanctuary so the people were restrained from bringing 7 For the stuff they had was sufficient for all the work to make it and too much 8 ¶ * Chap. 26.3 4. And every wise-hearted man among them that wrought the work of the tabernacle made ten curtains of fine twined
in water and be unclean until the even 17 And every garment and every skin whereon is the seed of copulation shall be washed with water and be unclean until the even 18 The woman also with whom man shall lie with seed of copulation they shall both bathe themselves in water and be unclean until the even 19 ¶ And if a woman have an issue and her issue in her flesh be bloud she shall be †Heb. in her separation put apart seven days and whosoever toucheth her shall be unclean until the even 20 And every thing that she lieth upon in her separation shall be unclean every thing also that she sitteth upon shall be unclean 21 And whosoever toucheth her bed shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water and be unclean until the even 22 And whosoever toucheth any thing that she sat upon shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water and be unclean until the even 23 And if it be on her bed or on any thing whereon she sitteth when he toucheth it he shall be unclean until the even 24 And if any man lie with her at all and her flowers be upon him he shall be unclean seven days and all the bed whereon he lieth shall be unclean 25 And if a woman have an issue of her bloud many days out of the time of her separation or if it run beyond the time of her separation all the days of the issue of her uncleanness shall be as the days of her separation she shall be unclean 26 Every bed whereon she lieth all the days of her issue shall be unto her as the bed of her separation and whatsoever she sitteth upon shall be unclean as the uncleanness of her separation 27 And whosoever toucheth those things shall be unclean and shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water be unclean until the even 28 But if she be cleansed of her issue then she shall number to her self seven days and after that she shall be clean 29 And on the eighth day she shall take unto her two turtles or two young pigeons and bring them unto the priest to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation 30 And the priest shall offer the one for a sin-offering and the other for a burnt-offering and the priest shall make an atonement for her before the LORD for the issue of her uncleanness 31 Thus shall ye separate the children of Israel from their uncleanness that they die not in their uncleanness when they defile my tabernacle that is among them 32 This is the law of him that hath an issue and of him whose seed goeth from him and is defiled therewith 33 And of her that is sick of her flowers and of him that hath an issue of the man and of the woman and of him that lieth with her which is unclean CHAP. XVI 1 How the high priest must enter into the hâ—ly place 11 The sin-offering for himself 15 The sin-offering for the people 20 The scape-goat 29 The yearly feast of the expâ—ations ANd the LORD spake unto Moses after * Chap. 10.2 the death of the two sons of Aaron when they offered before the LORD and died 2 And the LORD said unto Moses Speak unto Aaron thy brother that he * Ex. 30.10 Hebr. 9.7 come not at all times into the holy place within the vail before the mercy-seat which is upon the ark that he die not for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy-seat 3 Thus shall Aaron come into the holy place with a young bullock for a sin-offering and a ram for a burnt-offering 4 He shall put on the holy linen coat and he shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh and shall be girded with the linen girdle and with the linen mitre shall he be attired these are holy garments therefore shall he wash his flesh in water and so put them on 5 And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel two kids of the goats for a sin offering and one ram for a burnt-offering 6 And Aaron shall offer his bullock of the sin-offering which is for himself and * Hebr. 9.7 make an atonement for himself and for his house 7 And he shall take the two goats and present them before the LORD at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation 8 And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats one lot for the LORD and the other lot for the †Heb. Azazâ—l scape-goat 9 And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the LORDS lot †Heb. went up fell and offer him for a sin-offering 10 But the goat on which the lot fell to be the scape-goat shall be presented alive before the LORD to make an atonement with him and to let him go for a scape-goat into the wilderness 11 And Aaron shall bring the bullock of the sin offering which is for himself and shall make an atonement for himself and for his house and shall kill the bullock of the sin-offering which is for himself 12 And he shall take a censer-full of burning coals of fire from off the altar before the LORD and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small and bring it within the vail 13 And he shall put the incense upon the fire before the LORD that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy-seat that is upon the testimony that he die not 14 And * Hebr. â— 13 10.4 he shall take of the bloud of the bullock and * Cha. 4. â— sprinkle it with his finger upon the mercy seat east-ward and before the mercy-seat shall he sprinkle of the bloud with his finger seven times 15 ¶ Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering that is for the people and bring his bloud within the vail and do with that bloud as he did with the bloud of the bullock and sprinkle it upon the mercy-seat and before the mercy seat 16 And he shall make an atonement for the holy place because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel and because of their transgressions in all their sins and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation that †Heb. dwelleth remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness 17 * Luk. 1 1â— And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goeth in to make an atonement in the holy place until he come out and have made an atonement for himself and for his houshold and for all the congregation of Israel 18 And he shall go out unto the altar that is before the LORD and make an atonement for it and shall take of the bloud of the bullock of the bloud of the goat put it upon the horns of the altar round about 19 And he shall sprinkle of the bloud upon it with his finger seven times and cleanse it and hallow it from the uncleanness of the children of Israel

of the Shimites these are the families of the Gershonites 22 Those that were numbred of them according to the number of all the males from a moneth old and upward even those that were numbred of them were seven thousand and five hundred 23 The families of the Gershonites shall pitch behinde the tabernacle west-ward 24 And the chief of the house of the father of the Gershonites shall be Eliasaph the son of Lael 25 And the charge of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation shall be the tabernacle and the tent the covering thereof and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation 26 And the hangings of the court and the curtain for the door of the court which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about and the cords of it for all the service thereof 27 ¶ And of Kohath was the family of the Amramites and the family of the Izeharites and the family of the Hebronites and the family of the Uzzielites these are the families of the Kohathites 28 In the number of all the males from a moneth old and uâ—ward were eight thousand six hundred keeping the charge of the sanctâ—ary 29 The families of the sons of Kohath shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle south-ward 30 And the chief of the house of the father of the families of the Kohathites shall be Elizaphan the son of Uzziel 31 And their charge shall be the ark and the table and the candlestick and the altars and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith they minister and the hanging and all the service thereof 32 And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be chief over the chief of the Levites and have the oversight of them that keep the charge of the sanctuary 33 ¶ Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites and the family of the Mushites these are the families of Merari 34 And those that were numbred of them according to the number of all the males from a moneth old and upward were six thousand and two hundred 35 And the chief of the house of the father of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail these shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle north-ward 36 And †Heb. the office of the charge under the custody and charge of the sons of Merari shall be the boards of the tabernacle and the bars thereof and the pillars thereof and the sockets thereof and all the vessels thereof and all that serveth thereto 37 And the pillars of the court round about and their sockets and their pins and their cords 38 ¶ But those that encamp before the tabernacle toward the east even before the tabernacle of the congregation east-ward shall be Moses and Aaron and his sons keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Israel and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death 39 All that were numbred of the Levites which Moses and Aaron numbred at the commandment of the LORD throughout their families all the males from a moneth old and upward were twenty and two thousand 40 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Number all the first-born of the males of the children of Israel from a moneth old and upward and take the number of their names 41 And thou shalt take the Levites for me I am the LORD in stead of all the first-born among the children of Israel and the cattel of the Levites instead of all the firstlings among the cattel of the children of Israel 42 And Moses numbred as the LORD commanded him all the first-born among the children of Israel 43 And all the first-born males by the number of names from a moneth old and upward of those that were numbred of them were twenty and two thousand two hundred and threescore and thirteen 44 And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 45 Take the Levites in stead of all the first-born among the children of Israel and the cattel of the Levites in stead of their cattel and the Levites shall be mine I am the LORD 46 And for those that are to be redeemed of the two hundred and threescore and thirteen of the first-born of the children of Israel which are more then the Levites 47 Thou shalt even take five shekels a piece by the poll after the shekel of the sanctuary shalt thou take them * Exod. 30.13 Lev. 27.25 Ch. 18.16 Ezek. 45.12 the shekel is twenty gerahs 48 And thou shalt give the money wherewith the odd number of them is to be redeemed unto Aaron and to his sons 49 And Moses took the redemption-money of them that were over and above them that were redeemed by the Levites 50 Of the first-born of the children of Israel took he the money a thousand three hundred and threescore and five shekels after the shekel of the sanctuary 51 And Moses gave the money of them that were redeemed unto Aaron and to his sons according to the word of the LORD as the LORD commanded Moses CHAP. Ez 44.28 I am thy part and thine inheritance among the children of Israel 21 And behold I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance for their service which they serve even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation 22 Neither must the children of Israel henceforth come nigh the tabernacle of the congregation * Heb. to die lest they bear sin †and die 23 But the Levites shall do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation and they shall bear their iniquity It shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations that among the children of Israel they have no inheritance 24 But the tithes of the children of Israel which they offer as an heave-offering unto the LORD I have given to the Levites to inherit therefore I have said unto them Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance 25 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 26 Thus speak unto the Levites and say unto them When ye take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance then ye shall offer up an heave-offering of it for the LORD even a tenth part of the tithe 27 And this your heave-offering shall be reckoned unto you as though it were the corn of the threshing-floor and as the fulness of the wine-press 28 Thus you also shall offer an heave-offering unto the LORD of all your tithes which ye receive of the children of Israel and ye shall give thereof the LORDs heave-offering to Aaron the priest 29 Out of all your gifts ye shall offer every heave-offering of the LORD of all the †Heb. sat best thereof even the hallowed part thereof out of it 30 Therefore thou shalt say unto them When ye have heaved the best thereof from it then it shall be counted unto the Levites as the increase of the threshing-floor and as the encrease of the wine press 31 And ye shall eat it in every place ye and your housholds for it is your reward for your service in the tabernacle of the congregation 32 And ye shall bear no sin by reason of it when ye have heaved from it the best of it neither shall ye pollute the holy things of the children of Israel lest ye die CHAP. XIX 1 The water of separation made of the ashes of a red heifr 11 The law for the use of it in purification of the unclean ANd the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron saying 2 This is the ordinance of the law which the LORD hath commanded saying Speak unto the children of Israel that they bring thee a red heifer without spot wherein is no blemish and upon which never came yoke 3 And ye shall give her unto Eleazar the priest that he may bring her * Heb. 13.11 forth without the camp and one shall slay her before his face 4 And Eleazar the priest shall take of her bloud with his finger and * Heb. 9.13 sprinkle of her bloud directly before the tabernacle of the congregation seven times 5 And one shall burn the heifet in his sight * Ex. 29.14 Levit. 4.11 12. her skin and her flesh and her bloud with her dung shall he burn 6 And the priest shall take cedar-wood and hyssop and scarlet and cast it into the midst of the burning of the heifer 7 Then the priest shall wash his clothes and he shall bathe his flesh in water and afterward he shall come into the camp and the priest shall be unclean until the even 8 And he that burneth her shall wash his clothes in water and bathe his flesh in water and shall be unclean until the even 9 And a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer and lay them up without
thee to honour 38 And Balaam said unto Balak Lo I am come unto thee have I now any power at all to say any thing the word that God putteth in my mouth that shall I speak 39 And Balaam went with Balak and they came unto ‖ Or a city of streets .. XXIII 1 13 28 Balaks sacrifice 7 18 Balaams parable ANd Balaam said unto Balak Build me here seven altars and prepare me here seven oxen and seven rams 2 And Balak did as Balaam had spoken and Balak and Balaam offered on every altar a bullock and a ram 3 And Balaam said unto Balak Stand by thy burnt-offering and I will go peradventure the LORD will come to meet me and whatsoever he sheweth me I will tell thee And ‖ Or he went solitary he went to an high place 4 And God met Balaam and he said unto him I have prepared seven altars and I have offered upon every altar a bullock and a ram 5 And the LORD put a word in Balaams mouth and said Return unto Balak and thus thou shalt speak 6 And he returned unto him and â—o he stood by his burnt-sacrifice he and all the princes of Moab 7 And he took up his parable and said Balak the king of Moab hath brought me from Aram out of the mountains of the east saying Come curse me Jacob and come defie Israel 8 How shall I curse whom God hath not cursed or how shall I defie whom the LORD hath not defied 9 For from the top of the rocks I see him and from the hils I behold him lo the people shall dwell alone and shall not be reckoned among the nations 10 Who can count the dust of Jacob and the number of the fourth part of Israel Let †Heb. my soul or my life me die the death of the righteous and let my last end be like his 11 And Balak said unto Balaam What hast thou done unto me I took thee to curse mine enemies and behold thou hast blessed them altogether 12 And he answered and said Must I not take heed to speak that which the LORD hath put in my mouth 13 And Balak said unto him Come I pray thee with me unto another place from whence thou mayest see them thou shalt see but the utmost part of them and shalt not see them all and curse me them from thence 14 ¶ And he brought him into the field of Zophim to the top of ‖ Or the hill Pis-gah and built seven altars and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar 15 And he said unto Balak Stand here by thy burnt-offering while I meet the LORD yonder 16 And the LORD met Balaam and * Chap. 22.35 put a word in his mouth and said Go again unto Balak and say thus 17 And when he came to him behold he stood by his burnt-offering and the princes of Moab with him And Balak said unto him What hath the LORD spoken 18 And he took up his parable and said Rise up Balak and hear hearken unto me thou son of Zippor 19 God is not a man that he should lie neither the son of man that he should repent hath he said and shall he not do it or hath he spoken and shall he not make it good 20 Behold I have received commandment to bless and he hath blessed and I cannot reverse it 21 He hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob neither hath he seen perversness in Israel the LORD his God is with him and the shout of a king is among them 22 * Chap. 24.8 God brought them out of Egypt he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn 23 Surely there is no enchantment ‖ Or in against Jacob neither is there any divination against Israel according to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel What hath God wrought 24 Behold the people shall rise up as a great lion and lift up himself as a young lion he shall not lie down until he eat of the prey and drink the bloud of the slain 25 ¶ And Balak said unto Balaam Neither curse them at all nor bless them at all 26 But Balaam answered and said unto Balak Told not I thee saying All that the LORD speaketh that I must do 27 ¶ And Balak said unto Balaam Come I pray thee I will bring thee unto another place peradventure it will please God that thou mayest curse me them from thence 28 And Balak brought Balaam unto the top of Peor that looketh toward Jeshimon 29 And Balaam said unto Balak Build me here seven altars and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams 30 And Balak did as Balaam had said and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar CHAP. XXIV 1 Balaam leaving divinations prophesieth the happiness of Israel 10 Balak in anger dismisâ—eth him 15 He prophesieth of the Star of Jacob and the destruction of some nations ANd when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel he went not as at * Chap. 23.3 15. other times †Heb. to the meeting of enchantments to seek for enchantments but he set his face toward the wilderness 2 And Balaam lift up his eyes and he saw Israel abiding in his tents according to their tribes and the spirit of God came upon him 3 * Chap. 23.7 18. And he took up his parable and said Balaam the son of Beor hath said and the man †Heb. who had his eyes shut but now open whose eyes are open hath said 4 He hath said which heard the words of God which saw the vision of the Almighty falling into a trance but having his eyes open 5 How goodly are thy tents O Jacob and thy tabernacles O Israel 6 As the valleys are they spread forth as gardens by the rivers side as the trees of sign aloes which the LORD hath planted and as cedar-trees beside the waters 7 He shall pour the water out of his buckets and his seed shall be in many waters and his king shall be higher then Agag and his kingdom shall be exalted 8 * Chap. 23.22 God brought him forth out of Egypt he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn he shall eat up the nations his enemies and shall break their bones and pierce them through with his arrows 9 * Gen. 49.9 He couched he lay down as a lion and as a great lion who shall stir him up Blessed is he that blesseth thee and cursed is he that curseth thee 10 ¶ And Balaks anger was kindled against Balaam and he smote his hands together and Balak said unto Balaam I called thee to curse mine enemies and behold thou

therefore wrote this song the same day and taught it the children of Israel 23 And he gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge and said * Jos 1.6 Be strong and of a good courage for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I sware unto them and I will be with thee 24 ¶ And it came to pass when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book until they were finished 25 That Moses commanded the Levites which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD saying 26 Take this book of the law and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God that it may be there for a witness against thee 27 For I know thy rebellion and thy stiff neck behold while I am yet alive with you this day ye have been rebellious against the LORD and how much more after my death 28 Gather unto me all the elders of your tribes and your officers that I may speak these words in their ears and call heaven and earth to record against them 29 For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt your selves and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you and evil will befal you in the latter days because ye will do evil in the sight of the LORD to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands 30 And Moses spake in the ears of all the congregation of Israel the words of this song until they were ended CHAP. XXXII 1 Moses song which setteth forth Gods mercy and vengeance 46 He exhorteth them to set their hearts upon it 48 God sendeth him up to mount Nebo to see the land and die GIve ear O ye heavens and I will speak and hear O earth the words of my mouth 2 My doctrine shall drop as the rain my speech shall distil as the dew as the small rain upon the tender herb and as the showers upon the grass 3 Because I will publish the name of the LORD ascribe ye greatness unto our God 4 He is the Rock his work is perfect for all his ways are judgement a God of truth and without iniquity just and right is he 5 †Heb. he hath corrupted to himself They have corrupted themselves ‖ Or that they are not his children that is their blot their spot is not the spot of his children they are a perverse and crooked generation 6 Do ye thus requite the LORD O foolish people and unwise is not he thy father that hath bought thee hath he not made thee and established thee 7 ¶ Remember the days of old consider the years of †Heb. generation and generation many generations ask thy father and he will shew thee thy elders and they will tell thee 8 When the most high divided to the nations their inheritance when he separated the sons of Adam he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel 9 For the LORDs portion is his people Jacob is the †Heb. cord lot of his inheritance 10 He found him in a desert land and in the waste howling wilderness he ‖ Or compassed him about led him about he instructed him he kept him as the apple of his eye 11 As an eagle stirreth up her nest fluttereth over her young spreadeth abroad her wings taketh them beareth them on her wings 12 So the LORD alone did lead him and there was no strange god with him 13 He made him ride on the high places of the earth that he might eat the increase of the fields and he made him to suck honey out of the rock and oyl out of the flinty rock 14 Butter of kine and milk of sheep with fat of lambs and rams of the breed of Bashan and goats with the fat of kidneys of wheat and thou didst drink the pure bloud of the grape 15 ¶ But Jeshurun waxed fat and kicked thou art waxen fat thou art grown thick thou art covered with fatness then he forsook God which made him lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation 16 They provoked him to jealousie with strange gods with abominations provoked they him to anger 17 They sacrificed unto devils ‖ Or which were not God not to God to gods whom they knew not to new gods that came newly up whom your fathers feared not 18 Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful and hast forgotten God that formed thee 19 And when the LORD saw it he ‖ Or despised abhorred them because of the provoking of his sons and of his daughters 20 And he said I will hide my face from them I will see what their end shall be for they are a very froward generation children in whom is no faith 21 They have moved me to jealousie with that which is not god they have provoked me to anger with their vanities and * Rom. 10.19 I will move them to jealousie with those which are not a people I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation 22 For a fire is kindled in my anger and ‖ Or hath burned shall burn unto the lowest hell and ‖ Or hath consumed shall consume the earth with her increase and set on fire the foundations of the mountains 23 I will heap mischiefs upon them I will spend mine arrows upon them 24 They shall be burnt with hunger and devoured with †Heb. burning â—oals burning heat and wâ—th bitter destruction I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them with the poyson of serpents of the dust 25 The sword without and terrour †Heb. from the chambers within shall †Heb. bereave destroy both the young man and the virgin the suckling also with the man of gray hairs 26 I said I would scatter them into corners I would make the remembrance of them to cease from among men 27 Were it not that I feared the wrath of the enemy lest their adversaries should behave themselves strangely and lest they should say ‖ Or Our high hand and not the LORD hath done all this Our hand is high and the LORD hath not done all this 28 For they are a nation void of counsel neither is there any understanding in them 29 O that they were wise that they understood this that they would consider their latter end 30 How should * Jos 23.10 one chase a thousand and two put ten thousand to flight except their Rock had sold them and the LORD had shut them up 31 For their rock is not as our Rock even our enemies themselves being judges 32 For their vine ‖ Or is worse then the vine of Sodom c. is of the vine of Sodom and of the fields of Gomorrah their grapes are grapes of gall their clusters are bitter 33 Their wine is the poyson of dragons and the cruel venome of asps 34 Is not this laid up in store with
†Heb. ciâ—led seated and he came with the heads of the people he executed the justice of the LORD and his judgements with Israel 22 ¶ And of Dan he said Dan is a lions whelp he shall leap from Bashan 23 ¶ And of Naphtali he said O Naphtali satisfied with favour full with the blessing of the LORD possess thou the west and the south 24 ¶ And of Asher he said Let Asher be blessed with children let him be acceptable to his brethren and let him dip his foot in oyl 25 ‖ Or under thy shoes shall be iron Thy shoes shall be iron and brass and as thy days so shall thy strength be 26 ¶ There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun who rideth upon the heaven in thy help and in his excellency on the skie 27 The eternal God is thy refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee and shall say Destroy them 28 * Jer. 23.6 Israel then shall dwell in safety alone the fountain of Jacob shall be upon a land of corn and wine also his heaven shall drop down dew 29 Happy art thou O Israel who is like unto thee O people saved by the LORD the shield of thy help and who is the sword of thy excellency and thine enemies ‖ Or shall be subdued shall be found liars unto thee and thou shalt tread upon their high places CHAP. I. 1 The Lord appointeth Joshua to succeed Moses 3 The borders of the promised land 5.9 God promiseth to asist Joshua 8 He giveth him instructions 10 He prepareth the people to pass over Jordan 12 Joshua putteth the two tribes and half in mind of their promise to Moses 15 They promise him fealty NOw after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun Moses * Deut. 1.38 minister saying 2 Moses my servant is dead now therefore arise go over this Jordan thou and all this people unto the land which I do give to them even to the children of Israel 3 * Deut. 11.24 Ch. 14.9 Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon that have I given unto you as I said unto Moses 4 From the wilderness and this Lehanon even unto the great river the river Euphrates all the land of the Hittites and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun shall be your coast 5 There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life as I was with Moses so I will be with thee * Heb. 13.5 I will not sail thee nor forsake thee 6 * Deut. 31.23 Be strong and of a good courage for ‖ Or thou shalt cause thâ—â— people to inherit the land c. unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land which I sware unto their fathers to give them 7 Onely be thou strong and very couragious that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law which Moses my servant commanded thee * Deu. 5.32 28.14 turn not from it to the right hand or to the left that thou mayest ‖ Or do wisely prosper withersoever thou goest 8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth but thou shalt meditate therein day and night that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous and then thou shalt ‖ Or do wisely have good success 9 Have not I commanded thee Be strong and of a good courage be not afraid neither be thou dismayed for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest 10 ¶ Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people saying 11 Pass through the host and command the people saying prepare you victuals for within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan to go in to possess the land which the LORD your God giveth you to possess it 12 ¶ And to the Reubenites and to the Gadites and to half the tribe of Manasseh spake Joshua saying 13 Remember * Numb 32.20 the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you saying The LORD your God hath given you rest and hath given you this land 14 Your wives your little ones and your cattel shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side Jordan but ye shall pass before your brethren †Heb. marshalled by five armed all the mighty men of valour and help them 15 Until the LORD have given your brethren rest as he hath given you and they also have possessed the land which the LORD your God giveth them then ye shall return unto the land of your possession and enjoy it
for them that be escaped of Benjamin that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel 18 Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters for the children of Israel have sworn saying Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin 19 Then they said Behold there is a feast of the LORD in Shiloh †Heb. from year to year yearly in a place which is on the north side of Beth-el ‖ Or towards the sun-rising on the east-side ‖ Or Or. on of the high-way that goeth up from Beth-el to Shechem and on the south of Lebonah 20 Therefore they commanded the children of Benjamin saying Go and lie in wait in the vineyards 21 And see and behold if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances then come ye out of the vineyards and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh and go to the land of Benjamin 22 And it shall be when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to complain that we will say unto them ‖ Or Gratifie us in thim be favourable unto them for our sakes because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war for ye did not give unto them at this time that you should be guilty 23 And the children of Benjamin did so and took them wives according to their number of them that danced whom they caught and they went and returned unto their inheritance and repaired the cities and dwelt in them 24 And the children of Israel departed thence at that time every man to his tribe and to his family and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance 25 * Chap. 17.6 18.1 19.1 In those days there was no king in Israel every man did that which was right in his own eyes ¶ The book of RUTH CHAP. I. 1 Elimelech driven by famine into Moab dieth there 4 Mahlon and Chilion having married wives of Moab die also 6 Naomi returning homeward 8 dissuadeth her two daughters in law from going with her 14 Orpah leaveth her but Ruth with great constancy accompanieth her 19 They two come to Beth-lehem where they are gladly received NOw it came to pass in the days when the judges †Heb. judged ruled that there was a famine in the land and a certain man of Beth-lehem-judah went to sojourn in the countrey of Moab he and his wife and his two sons 2 And the name of the man was Elimelech and the name of his wife Naomi and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion Ephrathites of Beth-lehem-judah and they came into the countrey of Moab and †Heb. were continued there 3 And Elimelech Naomi's husband died and she was left and her two sons 4 And they took them wives of the women of Moab the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth and they dwelled there about ten years 5 And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband 6 ¶ Then she arose with her daughters in law that she might return from the countrey of Meab for she had heard in the countrey of Moab how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread 7 Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was and her two daughters in law with her and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah 8 And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law Go return each to her mothers house the LORD deal kindly with you as ye have dealt with the dead and with me 9 The LORD grant you that you may finde rest each of you in the house of her husband Then she kissed them and they lift up their voice and wept 10 And they said unto her Surely we will return with thee unto thy people 11 And Naomi said Turn again my daughters why will ye go with me are there yet any mo sons in my womb that they may be your husbands 12 Turn again my daughters go your way for I am too old to have an husband if I should say I have hope ‖ Or if I were with an bushand if I should have a husband also to night and should also bear sons 13 Would ye †Heb. hope tarry for them till they were grown would ye stay for them from having husbands nay my daughters for †Heb. I have much bitterness it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD is gone out against me 14 And they lift up their voice and wept again and Orpah kissed her mother in law but Ruth clave unto her 15 And she said Behold thy sister in law is gone back unto her people and unto her gods return thou after thy sister in law 16 And Ruth said ‖ Or Be not against me Intreat me not to leave thee or to return from following after thee for whither thou goest I will go and where thou lodgest I will lodge thy people shall be my people and thy God my God 17 Where thou diest will I die and there will I be buried the LORD do so to me and more also if ought but death part thee and me 18 When she saw that she †Heb. strengthned her self was stedfastly minded to go with her then she left speaking unto her 19 ¶ So they two went until they came to Beth-lehem And it came to pass when they were come to Beth-lehem that all the city was moved about them and they said Is this Naomi 20 And she said unto them Call me not ‖ That is pleasant Naomi call me ‖ That is bitter Mara for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me 21 I went out full and the LORD hath brought me home again empty why then call ye me Naomi seeing the LORD hath testified against me and the Almighty hath afflicted me 22 So Naomi returned and Ruth the Moabitess her daughter in law with her which returned out of the countrey of Moab and they came to Beth-lehem in the beginning of barley-harvest CHAP. II. 1 Ruth gleaneth in the fields of Boaz. 4 Boaz taking knowledge of her 8 sheweth her great favour 18 That which she got she carrieth to Naomi ANd Naomi had a kinsman of her husbands a mighty man of wealth of the family of Elimelech and his name was Boaz. 2 And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi Let me now go to the field and glean ears of corn after him in whose sight I shall finde grace And she said unto her Go my daughter 3 And she went and came and gleaned in the field after the reapers and her †Heb. hap hapned hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto ‖ Called Mat. 1.5 Boaz. Boaz who was of the kindred of Elimelech 4 ¶ And behold Boaz came from Beth-lehem and said unto the reapers The LORD be with you and they answered him the LORD
and he smote the javelin into the wall and David fled and escaped that night 11 Saul also sent messengers unto Davids house to watch him and to slay him in the morning and Michal Davids wife told him saying If thou save not thy life to night to morrow thou shalt be slain 12 ¶ So Michal let David down through a window and he went and fled and escaped 13 And Michal tooke an image and laid it in the bed and put a pillow of goats hair for his bolster and covered it with a cloth 14 And when Saul sent messengers to take David she said He is sick 15 And Saul sent the messengers again to see David saying Bring him up to me in the bed that I may slay him 16 And when the messengers were come in behold there was an image in the bed with a pillow of goats hair for his bolster 17 And Saul said unto Michal why hast thou deceived me so and sent away mine enemy that he is escaped And Michal answered Saul He said unto me Let me go why should I kill thee 18 ¶ So David fled and escaped and came to Samuel to Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him and he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth 19 And it was told Saul saying Behold David is at Naioth in Ramah 20 And Saul sent messengers to take David and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying Samuel standing as appointed over them the spirit of God was upon the messengers of Saul and they also prophesied 21 And when it was told Saul he sent other messengers and they prophesied likewise and Saul sent messengers again the third time and they prophesied also 22 Then went the also to Ramah and came to a great well that is in Sechu and he asked and said Where are Samuel and David And one said Behold they be at Naioth in Ramah 23 And he went thither to Naioth in Ramah and the spirit of God was upon him also and he went on and prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah 24 And he stript off his clothes also and prophesied before Samuel in like manner and †Heb. fell lay down naked all that day and all that nigh Wherefore they say * Chap. 10.11 Is Saul also among the prophets CHAP. XX. 1 David consulteth with Jonathan for his safety 11 Jonathan and David renew their covenant by oath 18 Jonathans token to David 24 Saul missing David seeketh to kill Jonathan 35 Jonathan lovingly taketh his leave of David ANd David fled from Naioth in Ramah and came and said before Jonathan What have I done what is mine iniquity and what is my sin before thy father that he seeketh my life 2 And he said unto him God forbid thou shalt not die behold my father will do nothing either great or small but that he will †Heb. uncover mine ear shew it me and why should my father hide this thing from me it is not so 3 And David sware moreover and said Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes and he saith Let not Jonathan know this lest he be grieved but truly as the LORD liveth and as thy soul liveth there is but a step between me and death 4 Then said Jonathan unto David ‖ Or Say what is thy minde and I will do c. Whatsoever thy soul †Heb. speaketh or thinketh desireth I will even do it for thee 5 And David said unto Jonathan Behold to morrow is the new-moon and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat but let me go that I may hide my self in the field unto the third day at even 6 If thy father at all miss me then say David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Beth-lehem his city for there is a yearly ‖ Or feast sacrifice there for all the family 7 If he say thus It is well thy servant shall have peace but if he be very wroth then be sure that evil is determined by him 8 Therefore thou shalt deal kindly with thy servant for * Chap. 18.3 23 18. thou hast brought thy servant into a covenant of the LORD with thee notwithstanding if there be in me iniquity slay me thy self for why shouldest thou bring me to thy father 9 And Jonathan said Far be it from thee for if I knew certainly that evil were determined by my father to come upon thee then would not I tell it thee 10 Then said David to Jonathan Who shall tell me or what if thy father answer thee roughly 11 ¶ And Jonathan said unto David Come and let us go out into the field And they went out both of them into the field 12 And Jonathan said unto David O LORD God of Israel when I have †Heb. searched sounded my father about to morrow any time or the third day and behold if there be good toward David and I then send not unto thee and †Heb. uncover thine ear shew it thee 13 The LORD do so and much more to Jonathan but if it please my father to do thee evil then I will shew it thee and send thee away that thou mayest go in peace and the LORD be with thee as he hath been with my father 14 And thou shalt not onely while yet I live shew me the kindness of the LORD that I die not 15 But alâ—o thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever no not when the LORD hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth 16 So Jonathan †Heb. out made a covenant with the house of David saying Let the LORD even require it at the hand of Davids enemies 17 And Jonathan caused David to swear again ‖ Or by his love towards him because he loved him for he loved him as he loved his own soul 18 Then Jonathan said to David To morrow is the new-moon and thou shalt be missed because thy seat will be †Heb. missed empty 19 And when thou hast stayed three days then thou shalt go down ‖ Or diligently †Heb. greatly quickly and come to the place where thou didst hide thy self †Heb. in the day of the business when the business was in hand and shalt remain by the stone ‖ Or that sheweth the way Ezel 20 And I will shoot three arrows on the side thereof as though I shot at a mark 21 And behold I will send a lad saying Go finde out the arrows If I expresly say unto the lad Behold the arrows are on this side of thee take them then come thou for there is peace to thee and †Heb. not any thing no hurt as the LORD liveth 22 But if I say thus unto the young man Behold the arrows are beyond thee go thy way for the LORD hath sent thee away 23 And as touching the matter which
all the evil that befel thee from thy youth until now 8 Then the king rose and sat in the gate And they told unto all the people saying Behold the king doth sit in the gate and all the people came before the king for Israel had fled every man to his tent 9 ¶ And all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israel saying The king saved us out of the hand of our enemies and he delivered us out of the hand of the Philistines and now he is fled out of the land for Absalom 10 And Absalom whom we anointed over us is dead in battel now therefore why †Heb. are ye silent speak ye not a word of bringing the king back 11 ¶ And king David sent to Zadok and to Absathar the priests saying Speak unto the elders of Judah saying Why are ye the last to bring the king back to his house seeing the speech of all Israel is come to the king even to his house 12 Ye are my brethren ye are my bones and my flesh wherefore then are ye the last to bring back the king 13 And say ye to Amasa Art thou not of my bone and of my flesh God do so to me and more also if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the room of Joab 14 And he bowed the heart of all the men of Judah even as the heart of one man so that they sent this word unto the king Return thou and all thy servants 15 So the king returned and came to Jordan and Judah came to Gilgal to go to meet the king to conduct the king over Jordan 16 ¶ And * 1 Kin. 2.8 Shimei the son of Gera a Benjamite which was of Bahurim hasted and came down with the men of Judah to meet king David 17 And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him and * Chap. 16.1 Ziba the servant of the house of Saul and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him and they went over Jordan before the king 18 And there went over a ferry-boat to carry over the kings houshold and to do †Heb. the good in his eyes what he thought good And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king as he was come over Jordan 19 And said unto the king Let not my lord impute iniquity unto me neither do thou remember * Chap. 16.5 that which thy servant did perversly the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem that the king should take â—t to his heart 20 For thy servant doth know that I have sinned therefore behold I am come the first this day of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king 21 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said Shall not Shimei be put to death for this because he cursed the LORDs anointed 22 And David said What have I to do with you ye sons of Zeruiah that ye should this day be adversaries unto me shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel 23 Therefore the king said unto Shimei Thou shalt not die And the king sware unto him 24 ¶ And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king and had neither dressed his feet nor trimmed his beard nor washed his clothes from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace 25 And it came to pass when he was come to Jerusalem to meet the king that the king said unto him Wherefore wentest not thou with me Mephibosheth 26 And he answered My lord O king my servant deceived me for thy servant said I will saddle me an ass that I may ride thereon and go to the king because thy servant is lame 27 And * Chap. 16.3 he hath slandred thy servant unto my lord the king but my lord the king is as an angel of God do therefore what is good in thine eyes 28 For all of my fathers house were but †Heb. men of death dead men before my lord the king yet didst thou set thy servant among them that did eat at thine own table what right therefore have I yet to cry any more unto the king 29 And the king said unto him Why speakest thou any more of thy matters I have said Thou and Ziba divide the land 30 And Mephibosheth said unto the king Yea let him take all forasmuch as my lord the king is come again in peace unto his own house 31 ¶ And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim went over Jordan with the king to conduct him over Jordan 32 Now Barzillai was a very aged man even fourscore years old and * Chap. 17.27 he had provided the king of sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim for he was a very great man 33 And the king said unto Barzillai Come thou over with me and I will seed thee with me in Jerusalem 34 And Barzillai said unto the king †Heb. How many days are the years of my life How long have I to live that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem 35 I am this day fourscore years old and can I discern between good evil can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink can I hear any more the voice of singing-men and singing-women wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king 36 Thy servant will go a little way over Jordan with the king and why should the king recompense it me with such a reward 37 Let thy servant I pray thee turn back again that I may die in mine own city and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother but behold thy servant Chimham let him go over with my lord the king and do to him what shall seem good unto thee 38 And the king answered Chimham shall go over with me and I will do to him that which shall seem good unto thee and whatsoever thou shalt †Heb. choose require of me that will I do for thee 39 And all the people went over Jordan and when the king was come over the king kissed Barzillai and blessed him and he returned unto his own place 40 Then the king went on to Gilgal and Chimham went on with him and all the people of Judah conducted the king and also half the people of Israel 41 ¶ And behold all the men of Israel came to the king and said unto the king Why have our brethren the men of Judah stoln thee away and have brought the king and his houshold and all Davids men with him over Jordan 42 And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel Because the king is near of kin to us wherefore then beye angry for this matter have we eaten at all of the kings cost or hath he given us any gift 43 And the men
mountain or into some valley And he said Ye shall not send 17 And when they urged him till he was ashamed he said Send They sent therefore fifty men and they sought three days but found him not 18 And when they came again to him for he tarried at Jericho he said unto them Did I not say unto you Go not 19 ¶ And the men of the city said unto Elisha Behold I pray thee the situation of this city is pleasant as my lord seeth but the water is naught and the ground †Heb. causing to miscarry barren 20 And he said Bring me a new cruse and put salt therein And they brought it to him 21 And he went forth unto the spring of the waters and cast the salt in there and said Thus saith the LORD I have healed these waters there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land 22 So the waters were healed unto this day according to the saying of Elisha which he spake 23 ¶ And he went up from thence unto Beth-el and as he was going up by the way there came forth little children out of the city and mocked him and said unto him Go up thou bald-head go up thou bald-head 24 And he turned back and looked on them and cursed them in the name of the LORD and there came forth two she-bears out of the wood and tare fourty and two children of them 25 And he went from thence to mount Carmel and from thence he returned to Samaria CHAP. III. 1 Jehorams reign 4 Mesha rebelleth 6 Jehoram with Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom being distressed for want of water by Elisha obtaineth water and promise of victory 21 The Moabites deceived by the colour of the water coming to spoil are overcome 26 The king of Moah by sacrificing the king of Edoms son raiseth the siege NOw Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah and reigned twelve years 2 And he wrought evil in the sight of the LORD but not like his father and like his mother for he put away the †Heb. statue image of Baal that his father had made 3 Nevertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat which made Israel to sin he departed not therefrom 4 ¶ And Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-master and rendred unto the king of Israel an hundred thousand lambs and an hundred thousand rams with the wool 5 But it came to pass when * Chap 1.1 Ahab was dead that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel 6 ¶ And king Jehoram went out of Samaria the same time and numbred all Israel 7 And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah saying The king of Moab hath rebelled against me wilt thou go with me against Moab to battel And he said I will go up * 1 Kings 22.4 I am as thou art my people as thy people and my horses as thy horses 8 And he said Which way shall we go up And he answered The way through the wilderness of Edom. 9 So the king of Israel went and the king of Judah and the king of Edom and they fetcht a compass of seven days journey and there was no water for the host and for the cattel †Heb. at their feet that followed them 10 And the king of Israel said Alas that the LORD hath called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab 11 But Jehoshaphat said Is there not here a prophet of the LORD that we may enquire of the LORD by him And one of the king of Israels servants answered and said Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat which poured water on the hands of Elijah 12 And Jehoshaphat said The word of the LORD is with him So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him 13 And Elisha said unto the king of Israel What have I to do with thee get thee to the prophets of thy father and to the prophets of thy mother And the king of Israel said unto him Nay for the LORD hath called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab 14 And Elisha said As the LORD of hosts liveth before whom I stand surely were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah I would not look toward thee nor see thee 15 But now bring me a minstrel And it came to pass when the minstrel played that the hand of the LORD came upon him 16 And he said Thus saith the LORD Make this valley full of ditches 17 For thus saith the LORD Ye shall not see wind neither shall ye see rain yet that valley shall be filled with water that ye may drink both ye and your cattel and your beasts 18 And this is but a light thing in the sight of the LORD he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand 19 And ye shall smite every fenced city and every choice city and shall fell every good tree and stop all wells of water and †Heb. grieve mar every good piece of land with stones 20 And it came to pass in the morning when the meat-offering was offered that behold there came water by the way of Edom and the countrey was filled with water 21 ¶ And when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come up to fight against them they †Heb. were cried together gathered all that were able to †Heb. gird himself with a girdle put on armour and upward and stood in the border 22 And they rose up early in the morning and the sun shone upon the water and the Moabites saw the water on the other side as red as bloud 23 And they said This is bloud the kings are surely †Heb. destroyed slain and they have smitten one another now therefore Moab to the spoil 24 And when they came to the camp of Israel the Israelites rose up and smote the Moabites so that they fled before them but ‖ Or they smote in it even smiting they went forward smiting the Moabites even in their countrey 25 And they beat down the cities and on every good piece of land cast every man his stone and filled it and they stopped all the wells of water and felled all the good trees †Heb. until he left the stones thereof in Kirharaseth onely in Kir-haraseth left they the stones thereof howbeit the slingers went about it and smote it 26 ¶ And when the king of Moab saw that the battel was too sore for him he took with him seven hundred men that drew swords to break through even unto the king of Edom but they could not 27 Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead and offered him for a burnt-offering upon the wall and there was great indignation against Israel and they departed
of Aaron the priests which were in the fields of the suburbs of their cities in every several city the men that were expressed by name to give portions to all the males among the priests and to all that were reckoned by genealogies among the Levites 20 ¶ And thus did Hezekiah throughout all Judah and wrought that which was goâ—d and right and truth before the LORD his God 21 And in every work that he began in the service of the house of God and in the law and in the commandments to seek his God he did it with all his heart and prospered CHAP XXXII 1 Sennackerib invadinâ— Judah Hezekiah fortifieth himself and encourageth his people 9 Against the blasphemies of Sennacherib by message and letters Hezekiah and Isaiah pray 21 An angel destroyeth the bost of the Assâ—rians to the glory of Hezekiah 24 Hezekiah praying in his sickness God giveth him a signe of recovery 25 He waxing proud is humbled by God 27 His wealth and works 21 His errour in the embassare of Babylon 32 He dying Manasseh succeedeth him AFter * 2 Kin. 18.13 c. Isa 36.1 c. these things and the establishment thereof Sennacherib king of Assyria came and entred into Judah and encamped against the fenced cities and thought †Heb. to break them up to win them for himself 2 And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come and that †Heb. his face was to war he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem 3 He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city and they did help him 4 So there was gathered much people together who stopt all the fountains and the brook that †Heb. overflowed ran through the midst of the sand saying Why should the kings of Assyria come and finde much water 5 Also he strengthned himself built up all the wall that was broker and raise it up to the towers and another wall without repaired Millo in the city of David made ‖ Or swords or weapons darts and shields in abundance 6 And he set captains of war over the people and gathered them together to him in the street of the gate of the city and †Heb. spake to their heart spake comfortably to them saying 7 Be strong and couragious be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria nor for all the multitude that is with him for there be nâ—â— with us then with him 8 With him is an * Jer. 17.5 arm of flesh but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battels And the people †Heb. lâ—aned rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah 9 ¶ * 2 Kin. 18.17 After this did Sennacherib king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem but he himself laid siege against Lachish and all his †Heb. dominion power with him unto Hezekiah king of Judah and unto all Judah that were at Jerusalem saying 10 Thus saith Sennacherib king of Assyria Whereon do ye trust that ye abide ‖ Or in the strong hold in the siege in Jerusalem 11 Doth not Hezekiah perswade you to give over your selves to die by famine and by thirst saying The LORD our God shall deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria 12 Hath not the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars and commanded Judah and Jerusalem saying Ye shall worship before one altar and burn inâ—ense upon it 13 Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of other lands were the gods of the nations of those lands any ways able to deliver their lands out of mine hand 14 Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed that could deliver his people out of mine hand that your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand 15 Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive you not perswade you on this manner neither yâ—t beleeve him for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand and out of the hand of my fathers how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand 16 And his servants spake yet more against the LORD God and against his servant Hezekiah 17 He wrote also letters to rail on the LORD God of Israel and to speak against him saying As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of mine hand so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand 18 Then they cried with a loud voice in the Jews speech unto the people of Jerusalem that were on the wall to affright them and to trouble them that they might take the city 19 And they spake against the God of Jerusalem as against the gods of the people of the earth which weÌ„re the work of the hands of man 20 And for this cause Hezekiah the king and the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz prayed and cried to heaven 21 ¶ * 2 Kin. 19.35 c. And the LORD sent an angel which cut off all the mighty men of valour and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria so he returned with shame of face to his own land And when he was come into the house of his god they that came forth of his own bowels †Heb. made him fall slew him there with the sword 22 Thus the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria and from the hand of all other and guided them on every side 23 And many brought gifts unto the LORD to Jerusalem and †Heb. precious things presents to Hezekiah king of Judah so that he was magnified in the sight of all nations from thenceforth 24 ¶ * 2 Kin. 20.1 Isa 38.1 In those days Hezekiah was sick to the death and prayed unto the LORD and he spake unto him and he ‖ Or wrought a miracle for him gave him a signe 25 But Hezekiah rendred not again according to the benefit done unto him for his heart was lifted up therefore there was wrath upon him and upon Judah and Jerusalem 26 Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for †Heb. the lifting up the pride of his heart both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem so that the wrath of the LORD came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah 27 ¶ And Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honour and he made himself treasuries for silver and for gold and for precious stones and for spices and for shields and for all manner of †Heb. instrumâ—nts of desire pleasant jewels 28 Store-houses also for the increase of corn and wine and oyl and stalls for all manner of beasts and cotes for flocks 29 Moreover he provided him cities and possessions of flocks and
yet would I not know my soul I would despise my life 22 This is one thing therefore I said it he destroyeth the perfect and the wicked 23 If the scourge slay suddenly he will laugh at the trial of the innocent 24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked he covereth the â—â—ces of the judges thereof if not where and who is he 25 Now my days are swifter then a post they flee away they see no good 26 They are passed away as the †Heb. ships of desire ‖ Or ships of Ebeh swift ships as the eagle that hâ—â—teth to the prey 27 If I say I will forget my complaint I will leave off my heaviness and comfoâ—t my self 28 I am afraid of all my sorrows I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent 29 If I be wicked why then labour I in vain 30 If I wash my self with snow-water and make my hands never so clean 31 Yet shalt thou plunge me in the ditch and mine own clothes shall ‖ Or make me to be abhâ—rred abhor me 32 For he is not a man as I am that I should answer him and we should come together in judgement 33 Neither is there †Heb. one that should argue any ‖ Or â—mpire days man betwixt us that might lay his hand upon us both 34 Let him take his rod away from me let not his fear terrifie me 35 Then would I speak and not fear him †Heb. but I am not so with my self but it is not so with me CHAP. X. 1 Job taking liberty of complaint expostulateth with God about his afflictions IS He complaineth of life and craveth a little ease before death MY soul is ‖ Or cut off while I live weary of my life I will leave my complaint upon my self I will speak in the bitterness of my soul 2 I will say unto God Do not condemn me shew me wherefore thou contendest with me 3 Is it good unto thee that thou shouldest oppress that thou shouldest despise †Heb. the labour of thine hands the work of thine hands and shine upon the counsel of the wicked 4 Hast thou eyes of flesh or seest thou as man seeth 5 Are thy days as the days of man are thy years as mans days 6 That thou enquirest after mine iniquity and searchest after my sin 7 †Heb. It is upon thy knowledge Thou knowest that I am not wicked and there is none that can deliver out of thine hand 8 Thine hands †Heb. took pains about have made me and fashioned me together round about yet thou dost destroy me 9 Remember I beseech thee that thou hast made me as the clay and wilt thou bring me into dust again 10 * Psal 139.14 15 16. Heb. sons of the people common people 24 Nevertheless the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah that they should not give him into the hand of the people to put him to death CHAP. XXVII 1Vnder the type of bonds and yokes be prophesieth the subduing of the neighbour kings unto Nehuchadnezzar 8 He exhorteth them to yield and not to beleeve the false prophets 12 The like he doth to Zedekiah 19 He foretelleth the remnant of the vessels shall be carried to Babylon and there continue until the day of visitation IN the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah came this word unto Jeremiah from the LORD saying 2 Thus saith the LORD to me Make thee bonds and yokes and put them upon thy neck 3 And send them to the king of Edom and to the king of Moab and to the king of the Ammonites and to the king of Tyrus and to the king of Zidon by the hand of the messengers which come to Jerusalem unto Zedekiah king of Judah 4 And command them ‖ Or concerning their masters saying to say unto their masters Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Thus shall ye say unto your masters 5 I have made the earth the man and the beast that are upon the ground by my great power and by my outstretched arm and * Dan. 4.17 25. have given it unto whom it seemed meet unto me 6 And now have I given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon * Ch. 25.9 43.10 my servant and the beasts of the field have I given him also to serve him 7 And all nations shall serve him and his son and his sons son until the very time of his land come and then many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of him 8 And it shall come to pass that the nation and kingdom which will not serve the same Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon and that will not put their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon that nation will I punish saith the LORD with the sword and with the famine and with the pestilence until I have consumed them by his hand 9 Therefore hearken not ye to your prophets nor to your diviners nor to your †Heb. deâ—ams dreamers nor to your enchanters nor to your sorcerers which speak unto you saying Ye shall not serve the king of Babylon 10 For they prophesie a lie unto you to remove you far from your land and that I should drive you out and ye should perish 11 But the nations that bring their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him those will I let remain still in their own land saith the LORD and they shall till it and dwell therein 12 ¶ I spake also to Zedekiah king of Judah according to all these words saying Bring your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him and his people and live 13 Why will ye die thou and thy people by the sword by the famine and by the pestilence as the LORD hath spoken against the nation that will not serve the king of Babylon 14 Therefore hearken not unto the words of the prophets that speak unto you saying Ye shall not serve the king of Babylon for they prophesie * Ch. 14.14 and 23.21 and 27.8 a lie unto you 15 For I have not sent them saith the LORD yet they prophesie †Heb. in a lie or lyingly a lie in my name that I might drive you out and that ye might perish ye and the prophets that prophesie unto you 16 Also I spake to the priests and to all this people saying Thus saith the LORD Hearken not to the words of your prophets that prophesie unto you saying Behold the vessels of the LORDS house shall now shortly be brought again from Babylon for they prophesie a lie unto you 17 Hearken not unto them serve the king of Babylon and live wherefore should this city be laid waste 18 But if they be prophets and if the word of the LORD be with them let them now make intercession to the LORD of hosts that the vessels which are lest in the house of the LORD and in the house of the king of Judah and at Jerusalem go not to Babylon 19 ¶ For thus saith the LORD of hosts concerning the pillars and concerning the sea and concerning the bases and concerning the residue of the vessels that remain in this city 20 Which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took not when he carried away * 2 Kin. 24.14 15. captive Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah from Jerusalem to Babylon and all the nobles of Judah and Jerusalem 21 Yea thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel concerning the vessels that remain in the house of the LORD and in the house of the king of Judah and of Jerusalem 22 They shall be * 2 Kim 25.13 2 Chr. 36.18 carried to Babylon and there shall they be until the day that I * 2 Chr. 36.22 Ch. 29.10 visit them saith the LORD then will I bring them up and restore them to this place CHAP. XXVIII 1 Hananiah prophesieth falsly the return of the vessels and of Jeconiah 5 Jeremiah wishing it to be true sheweth that the event will declare who are true prophets 10 Hananiah breaketh Jeremiahs yoke 12 Jeremiah telleth of an iron yoke 15 and foretelleth Hananiahs death ANd it came to pass the same year in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah in the fourth year and in the fifth moneth that Hananiah the son of Azur the prophet which was of Gibeon spake unto me in the house of the LORD in the presence of the priests and of all the people saying 2 Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts the God of Israel saying I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon 3 Within †Heb. two years of days two full years will I bring again into this place all the vessels of the LORDs house that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this Place and carried them to Babylon 4 And I will bring again to this place Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah with all the †Heb. captivity captives of Judah that went into Babylon saith the LORD for I will break the yoke of the king of Babalon 5 ¶ Then the prophet Jeremiah said unto the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and in the presence of all the people that stood in the house of the LORD 6 Even the prophet Jeremiah said Amen The LORD do so the LORD perform thy words which thou hast prophesied to bring again the vessels of the LORDS house and all that is carried away captive from Babylon into this place 7 Nevertheless hear thou now this word that I speak in thine ears and in the ears of all the people 8 The prophets that have
had made that the prison 16 ¶ When Jeremiah was entred into the dungeon and into the ‖ Or 〈◊〉 cabins and Jeremiah had remained there many days 17 Then Zedekiah the king sent and took him out and the king asked him secretly in his house and said Is there any word from the LORD And Jeremiah said There is for said he thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon 18 Moreover Jeremiah said unto king Zedekiah What have I offended against thee or against thy servants or against this people that ye have put me in prison 19 Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you saying The king of Babylon shall not come against you nor against this land 20 Therefore hear now I pray thee O my lord the king †Heb. let my supplication fall let my supplication I pray thee be accepted before thee that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe lest I die there 21 Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers street until all the bread in the city were spent Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison CHAP. XXXVIII 1 Jeremiah by a false suggestion is put into the dungeon of Malebiah 7 Ebed meleab by suit getteth him some enlargement 14Vpon secret conference be counselleth the king by yeelding to save his life 24 By the kings instructions be concealeth the conference from the princes THen Shephatiah the son of Mattan and Gedasiah the son of Pashur and Jucal the son of Shelemiah and Pashur the son of Maichiah heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken unto all the people saying 2 Thus saith the LORD * Chap. 21.9 He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword by the famine and by the pestilence but he that goeth forth to the Caldeans shall live for he shall have his life for a prey and shall live 3 Thus saith the LORD This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylons army which shall take it 4 Therefore the Princes said unto the king We beseech thee let this man be put to death for thus he weakneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city and the hands of all the people in speaking such words unto them for this man seeketh not the †Heb. peace welfare of this people but the hurt 5 Then Zedekiah the king said Behold he is in your hand for the king is not be that can do any thing against you 6 Then took they Jeremiah and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son ‖ Or of the king of Hammelech that was in the court of the prison and they let down Jeremiah with cords And in the dungeon there was no water but mire So Jeremiah sunk in the mire 7 ¶ Now when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian one of the eunuchs which was in the kings house heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin 8 Ebed-melech went forth out of the kings house and spake to the king saying 9 My lord the king these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet whom they have cast into the dungeon and †Heb. be will die he is like to die for hunger in the place where he is for there is no more bread in the city 10 Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethioplan saying Take from hence thirty men †Heb. in thin◠hand with thee and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon before he die 11 So Ebed-melech took the men with him and went into the house of the king under the treasury and took thence old cast clouts and old rotten rags and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah 12 And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah Put now these old cast clouts and rotten rags under thine arm-holes under the cords And Jeremiah did so 13 So they drew up Jeremiah with cords and took him up out of the dungeon and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison 14 ¶ Then Zedekiah the king sent and took Jeremiah the prophet unto him into the ‖ Or principal third entry that is in the house of the LORD and the king said unto Jeremiah I will ask thee a thing hide nothing from me 15 Then Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah If I declare it unto thee wilt thou not surely put me to death and if I give thee counsel wilt thou not hearken unto me 16 So Zedekiah the king sware secretly unto Jeremiah saying As the LORD liveth that made us this soul I will not put thee to death neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life 17 Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah Thus saith the LORD the God of hosts the God of Israel If thou wilt assuredly go forth unto the king of Babylons princes then thy soul shall live and this city shall not be burnt with fire and thou shalt live and thine house 18 But if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylons princes then shall this city be given into the hand of the Caldeans and they shall burn it with fire and thou shalt not escape out of their hand 19 And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah I am afraid of the Jews that are faln to the Caldeans lest they deliver me into their hand and they mock me 20 But Jeremiah said They shall not deliver thee obey I beseech thee the voice of the LORD which I speak unto thee so it shall be well unto thee and thy soul shall live 21 But if thou refuse to go forth this is the word that the LORD hath shewed me 22 And behold all the women that are left in the king of Judahs house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylons princes and those women shall say †Heb. Men of thy peace Thy friends have set thee on and have prevailed against thee thy feet are sunk in the mire and they are turned away back 23 So they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Caldeans and thou shalt not escape out of their hand but shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon and †Heb. thou shalt burn c thou shalt cause this city to be burnt with fire 24 ¶ Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah Let no man know of these words and thou shalt not die 25 But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee and they come unto thee and say unto thee Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king hide it not from us and we will not put thee to death also what the king said unto thee 26 Then thou shalt say unto them I presented my supplication before the king that he would
thy wisdom By thy great wisdom and by thy traffick hast thou increased thy riches and thine heart is lifted up because of the riches 6 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD Because thou hast set thine heart as the heart of God 7 Behold therefore I will bring strangers upon thee the terrible of the nations and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of thy wisdom and they shall defile thy brightness 8 They shall bring thee down to the pit and thou shalt die the deaths of them that are slain in the midst of the seas 9 Wilt thou yet say before him that slayeth thee I am God but thou shalt be a man and no God in the hand of him that ‖ Or. â—â—undeth slayeth thee 10 Thou shalt die the deaths of the uncircumcised by the hand of strangers for I have spoken it saith the Lord GOD. 11 ¶ Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me saying 12 Son of man take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus and say unto him Thus saith the Lord GOD Thou sealest up the sum full of wisdom and perfect in beauty 13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God every precious stone was thy covering the ‖ Or ruby sardius topaz and the diamond the ‖ Or â—hrâ—solite beryl the onyx and the jasper the sapphire the ‖ Or thrysoprase emerald and the carbuncle and gold the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created 14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth and I have set thee so thou wast upon the holy mountain of God thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire 15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created till iniquity was found in thee 16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence and thou hast sinned therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God and I will destroy thee O covering cherub from the midst of the stones of fire 17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness I will cast thee to the ground I will lay thee before kings that they may behold thee 18 Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities by the iniquity of thy traffick therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee it shall devour thee and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee 19 All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee thou shalt be †Heb. terrours a terrour and never shalt thou be any more 20 ¶ Again the word of the LORD came unto me saying 21 Son of man set thy face against Zidon and prophesie against it 22 And say Thus saith the Lord GOD Behold I am against thee O Zidon and I will be glorified in the midst of thee and they shall know that I am the LORD when I shall have executed judgements in her and shall be sanctified in her 23 For I will send into her pestilence and bloud into her streets and the wounded shall be judged in the midst of her by the sword upon her on every side and they shall know that I am the LORD 24 ¶ And there shall be no more a pricking brier unto the house of Israel nor any grieving thorn of all that are round about them that despised them and they shall know that I am the Lord GOD. 25 Thus saith the Lord GOD When I shall have gathered the house of Israel from the people among whom they are scattered and shall be sanctified in them in the sight of the heathen then shall they dwell in their land that I have given to my servant Jacob. 26 And they shall dwell ‖ Or with confidence safely therein and shall build houses and plant vineyards yea they shall dwell with confidence when I have executed judgements upon all those that ‖ Or sâ—â—tâ— despise them round about them and they shall know that I am the LORD their God CHAP. XXIX 1 The judgement of Pharaoh for his treachery to Israel 8 The desolation of Egypt 13 The restauration thereof after fourty years 17 Egypt the reward of Nebuchadrezzar 21 Israel shall be restored IN the tenth year in the tenth moneth in the twelfth day of the moneth the word of the LORD came unto me saying 2 Son or man set thy face against Pharaoh king of Egypt and prophesie against him and against all Egypt 3 Speak and say Thus saith the Lord GOD Behold I am against thee Pharaoh king of Egypt the great * Psal 74.13 14. Isa 2â— 1 51.9 dragon that lieth in the midst of his rivers which hath said My river is mine own and I have made it for my self 4 But I will put hooks in thy chaws and I will cause the fish of thy rivers to stick unto thy scares and I will bring thee up out of the midst of thy rivers and all the fish of thy rivers shall stick unto thy scales 5 And I will leave thee thrown into the wilderness thee and all the fish of thy rivers thou shalt fall upon the †Heb. face of the field open fields thou shalt not be brought together nor gathered I have given thee for meat to the beasts of the field and to the fowls of the heaven 6 And all the inhabitants of Egypt shall know that I am the LORD because they have been a * 2 Kings 18.21 Isa 36.6 staff of reed to the house of Israel 7 When they took hold of thee by thy hand thou didst break and rent all their shoulder and when they leaned upon thee thou brakest and madest all their loyns to be at a stand 8 ¶ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD Behold I will bring a sword upon thee and cut off man and beast out of thee 9 And the land of Egypt shall be desolate and waste and they shall know that I am the LORD because he hath said The river is mine and I have made it 10 Behold therefore I am against thee and against thy rivers and I will make the land of Egypt †Heb. wastes oâ— waste utterly waste and desolate from the tower of †Heb. Seventh Syene even unto the border of Ethiopia 11 No foot of man shall pass through it nor foot of beast shall pass through it neither shall it be inhabited fourty years 12 And I will make the land of Egypt desolate in the midst of the countreys that are desolate and her cities among the cities that are laid waste shall be desolate fourty years and I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations and will disperse them through the countreys 13 ¶ Yet thus saith the Lord GOD At the * Isa 19.23 Jer. 46.26 end of fourty years
the truth witnessâ—th 24 O hear the prayer of thy servant and give ear to the petition of thy creature 25 For while I live I will speak and so long as I have understanding I will answer 26 O look not upon the sins of thy people but on them which serve thee in truth 27 Regard not the wicked inventions of the heathen but the desire of those that keep thy testimonies in afflictions 28 Think not upon those that have walked feignedly before thee but remember them which according to thy will have known thy fear 29 Let it not be thy will to destroy them which have lived like beasts but to look upon them that have clearly taught thy law 30 Take thou no indignation at them which are deemed worse then beasts but love them that alway put their trust in thy righteousness and glory 31 For we and our fathers ‖ Or are sick do languish of such diseases but because of us sinners thou shalt be called merciful 32 For if thou ‖ Or be willing hast a desire to have mercy upon us thou shalt be called merciful to us namely that have no works of righteousness 33 For the just which have many good works laid up with thee shall out of their own deeds receive reward 34 For what is man that thou shouldest take displeasure at him or what is a corruptible generation that thou shouldest be so bitter toward it 35 * 1 King 8.46 2 Chr. 6.36 For in truth there is no man among them that be born but he hath dealt wickedly and among the faithful there is none which hath not done amiss 36 For in this O Lord thy righteousness and thy goodness shall be declared if thou be merciful unto them which have not the ‖ Or substance confidence of good works 37 Then answered he me and said Some things hast thou spoken aright and according unto thy words it shall be 38 For indeed I will not think on the disposition of them which have sinned before death before judgement before destruction 39 But * Gen. 4.4 I will rejoyce over the disposition of the righteous and I will remember also their pilgrimage and the salvation and the reward that they shall have 40 Like as I have spoken now so shall it come to pass 41 For as the husbandman soweth much seed upon the ground and planteth many trees and yet the thing that is sown good in his season cometh not up neither doth all that is planted take root even so is it of them that are sown in the world they shall not all be saved 42 I answered then and said If I have found grace let me speak 43 Like as the husbandmans seed perisheth if it come not up and receive not thy rain in due season or if there come too much rain and corrupt it 44 Even so perisheth man also which is formed with thy hands and is called thine own image because thou art like unto him for whose sake thou hast made all things and likened him unto the husbandmans seed 45 Be not wroth with us but spare thy people and have mercy upon thine own inheritance for thou art merciful unto thy creature 46 Then answered he me and said Things present are for the present and things to come for such as be to come 47 For thou comest far short that thou shouldest be able to love my creature more then I but I have oft-times drawn nigh unto thee and unto it but never to the unrighteous 48 In this also thou art marvellous before the most High 49 In that thou hast humbled thy self as it becometh thee and hast not judged thy self worthy to be much glorified among the righteous 50 For many great miseries shall be done to them that in the latter time shall dwell in the world because they have walked in great pride 51 But understand thou for thy self and seek out the glory for such as be like thee 52 For unto you is paradise opened the tree of life is planted the time to come is prepared plenteousness is made ready a city is builded and rest is allowed yea perfect goodness and wisdom 53 The root of evil is sealed up from you weakness and the moth is hid from you and corruption is fled into ‖ Or the grave hell to be forgotten 54 Sorrows are passed and in the end is shewed the treasure of immortality 55 And therefore ask thou no more questions concerning the multitude of them that perish 56 For when they had taken liberty they despised the most High thought scorn of his law and forsook his ways 57 Moreover they have troden down his righteous 58 And * Ps 14. â— and 53.1 said in their heart that there is no God yea and that knowing they must die 59 For as the things aforesaid shall receive you so thirst and pain are prepared for them for it was not his will that men should come to nought 60 But they which be created have defiled the name of him that made them were unthankful unto him which prepared life for them 61 And therefore is my judgement now at hand 62 These things have I not shewed unto all men but unto thee and a few like thee Then answered I and said 63 Behold O Lord now hast thou shewed me the multitude of the wonders which thou wilt begin to do in the last times but at what time thou hast not shewed me CHAP. IX 7 Who shall be saved and who not 10 All the world is now corrupted 22 yet God doth save a few 33 He complaineth that those perish which keep Gods law 38 and seeth a woman lamenting in a field HE answered me then and said Measure thou the time diligently in it self and when thou seest part of the signs past which I have told thee before 2 Them shalt thou understand that it is the very same time wherein the Highest will begin to visit the world which he made 3 Therefore when there shall be seen * Matth. 14.7 earthquakes and uproars of the people in the world 4 Then shalt thou well understand that the most High spake of those things from the days that were before thee even from the beginning 5 For like as all that is made in the world hath a beginning and an end and the end is manifest 6 Even so the times also of the Highest have plain beginnings in wonders and powerful works and endings in effects and signs 7 And every one that shall be saved and shall be able to escape by his works and by saith whereby ye have beleeved 8 Shall be preserved from the said perils and shall see my salvation in my sand and within my borders for I have sanctified them for me from the beginning 9 Then ‖ Or. they shall marvel shall they be in pitiful case which now have abused my ways and they that have cast them away despitefully shall dwell in torments 10 For such as in their
life have received benefits and have not known me 11 And they that have lothed my law while they had yet liberty and when as yet place of repentance was open unto them understood not but despised it 12 The same must know it after death by pain 13 And therefore be thou not curious how the ungodly shall be punished and when but enquire how the righteous shall be saved whole the world is and for whom the world is created 14 Then answered I and said 15 I have said before and now do speak and will speak it also hereafter that there be many mo of them which perish then of them which shall be saved 16 Like as a wave is greater then a drop 17 And he answered me saying Like as the field is so is also the seed as the Howers be such are the colours also such as the workman is such also is the work and as the husbandman is himself so is his husbandry also for it was the time of the world 18 ‖ And now because the time of the world was come when I was preparing the world c. And now when I prepared the world which was not yet made even for them to dwell in that now live no man spake against me 19 For then every one obeyed ‖ but when the world was made both now and then the manners of every one created were corrupted by a never-failing harvest and a law unsearchable but now the manners of them which are created in this world that is made are corrupted by a perpetual seed and by a law which is unsearchable rid themselves 20 So I considered the world and behold there was peril because of the devices that were come into it 21 And I saw and spared it greatly and have kept me a ‖ Or grain grape of the cluster and a plant of a great people 22 Let the multitude perish then which was born in vain and let my ‖ Or grain grape be kept my plant for with great labour have I made it perfect 23 Nevertheless if thou wilt cease yet seven days mo but thou shalt not fast in them 24 But go into a field of flowers where no house is builded and eat onely the flowers of the field taste no flesh drink no wine but eat flowers onely 25 And pray unto the Highest continually then will I come and talk with thee 26 So I went my way into the field which is called Ardath like as he commanded me and there I sat amongst the flowers and did eat of the herds of the field and the meat of the same satisfied me 27 After seven days I sat upon the grass and my heart was vexed within me like as before 28 And I opened my mouth and began to talk before the most High and said 29 O Lord thou that shewest thy self unto us thou wast * Ex. 19.9 and 24.3 Deut. 4.12 shewed unto our fathers in the wilderness in a place where no man ‖ Or coâ—â—th treadeth in a barren place when they came out of Egypt 30 And thouspakest saying Hear me O Israel and mark my words thou seed of Jacob. 31 For behold I sow my law in you and it shall bring fruit in you and ye shall be honoured in it for ever 32 But our fathers which received the law kept it not and observed not thy ordinances and though the fruit of thy law did not perish neither could it for it was thine 33 Yet they that received it perished because they kept not the thing that was sown in them 34 And so it is a custom when the ground hath received seed or the sea a ship or any vessel meat or drink that that being perished wherein it was sown or cast into 35 That thing also which was sown or cast therein or received doth perish and remaineth not with us but with us it hath not hapned so 36 For we that have received the law perish by sin and our heart also which received it 37 Notwithstanding the law perisheth not but remaineth in his force 38 And when I spake these things in my heart I looked back with mine eyes and upon the right side I saw a woman and behold she mourned and wept with a loud voice and was much grieved in heart and her clother were rent and she had ashes upon her head 39 Then let I my thoughts go that I was in and turned me unto her 40 And said unto her Wherefore weepest thou why art thou so grieved in thy minde 41 And she said unto me Sir let me alone that I may bewail my lelf and add unto my sorrow for I am sore vexed in my minde and brought very low 42 And I said unto her What aileth thee tell me 43 She said unto me I thy servant have been barren and had no childe though I had an husband thirty years 44 And those thirty years I did nothing else day and night and every hour but make my prayer to the Highest 45 After thirty years God heard me thine hand-maid looked upon my misery considered my trouble and gave me a son and I was very glad of him so was my husband also and all my neighbours and we gave great honour unto the Almighty 46 And I nourished him with great travel 47 So when he grew up and came to the time that he should have a wife I made a feast CHAP. X. 1 He comforteth the woman in the field 17 She vanisheth away and a city appeareth in her place 40 The angel declareth these visions in the field ANd it so came to pass that when my son was entred into his wedding-chamber he fell down and died 2 Then we all overthrew the lights and all my ‖ Or countrey-men Lat. citizens neighbours rose up to comfort me so I took my rest unto the second day at night 3 And it came to pass when they had all left off to comfort me to the end I might be quiet then rose I up by night and fled and came hither into this field as thou seest 4 And I do now purpose not to return into the city but here to stay and neither to eat nor drink but continually to mourn and to fast until I die 5 Then left I the ‖ Or speeches meditations wherein I was and spake to to her in anger saying 6 Thou foolish woman above all other seest thou not our mourning and what hapneth unto us 7 How that Sion our mother is full of all heaviness and much humbled mourning very sore 8 And now seeing we all mourn and are sad for we are all in heaviness art thou grieved for one son 9 For ask the earth and she shall tell thee that it is she which ought to mourn for the fall of so many that grow upon her 10 For out of her came all at the first and out of her shall all others come and behold they walk almost all into destruction and a multitude of them is
a very fair woman and one that feared the Lord. 3 Her parents also were righteous and taught their daughter according to the law of Moses 4 Now Joacim was a great rich man and had a fair garden joyning unto his house and to him resorted the Jews because he was more honourable then all others 5 The same year were appointed two of the ancients of the people to be judges such as the Lord spake of that wickedness came from Babylon from ancient judges who seemed to govern the people 6 These kept much at Joacims house and all that had any suits in law came unto them 7 Now when the people departed away at noon Susanna went into her husbands garden to walk 8 And the two elders saw her going in every day and walking so that their lust was inflamed toward her 9 And they perverted their own minde and turned away their eyes that they might not look unto heaven nor remember just judgements 10 And albeit they both were wounded with her love yet durst not one shew another his grief 11 For they were ashamed to declare their lust that they desired to have to do with her 12 Yet they watched diligently from day to day to see her 13 And the one said to the other Let us now go home for it is dinner-time 14 So when they were gone out they parted the one from the other and turning back again they came to the same place and after they had asked one another the cause they acknowledged their lust then appointed they a time both together when they might finde her alone 15 And it fell out as they watched a fit time she went in †Gr. as yesterday and the day before as before with two maids onely and she was desirous to wash her self in the garden for it was hot 16 And there was no body there save the two elders that had hid themselves and watched her 17 Then she said to her maids Bring me oyl and washing-balls and shut the garden doors that I may wash me 18 And they did as she bade them and shut the garden-doors and went out themselves at ‖ Or side-doors privy doors to fetch the things that she had commanded them but they saw not the elders because they were hid 19 Now when the maids were gone forth the two elders rose up and ran unto her saying 20 Behold the garden-doors are shut that no man can see us and we are in love with thee therefore consent unto us and lie with us 21 If thou wilt not we will bear witness against thee that a young man was with thee and therefore thou didst send away thy maids from thee 22 Then Susanna sighed and said I am straighted on every side for if I do this thing it is death unto me and if I do it not I cannot escape your hands 23 It is better for me to fall into your hands and not to do it then to sin in the sight of the Lord. 24 With that Susanna cried with a loud voice and the two elders cried out against her 25 Then ran the one and opened the garden-door 26 So when the servants of the house heard the cry in the garden they rushed in at a privy door to see what was done unto her 27 But when the elders had declared their matter the servants were greatly ashamed for there was never such a report made of Susanna 28 And it came to pass the next day when the people were assembled to her husband Joacim the two elders came also full of mischievous imagination against Susanna to put her to death 29 And said before the people Send for Susanna the daughter of Chelcias Joacims wife and so they sent 30 So she came with her father and mother her children and all her kindred 31 Now Susanna was a very delicate woman and beauteous to behold 32 And these wicked men commanded to uncover her face for she was covered that they might be filled with her beauty 33 Therefore her friends and all that saw her wept 34 Then the two elders stood up in the mids of the people and said their hands upon her head 35 And she weeping looked up towards heaven for her heart trusted in the Lord. 36 And the elders said As we walked in the garden alone this woman came in with two maids and shut the garden doors and sent the maids away 37 Then a young man who there was hid came unto her and lay with her 38 Then we that stood in a corner of the garden seeing this wickedness ran unto them 39 And when we saw them together the man we could not hold for he was stronger then we and opened the door and leaped out 40 But having taken this woman we asked who the young man was but she would not tell us these things do we testifie 41 Then the assembly beleeve them as those that were the elders and judges of the people so they condemned her to death 42 Then Susanna cried out with a loud voice and said O everlasting God that knowest the secrets and knowest all things before they be 43 Thou knowest that they have born false witness against me and behold I must die whereas I never did such things as these men have maliciously invented against me 44 And the Lord heard her voice 45 Therefore when she was led to be put to death the Lord raised up the holy spirit of a young youth whose name was Daniel 46 Who cried with a loud voice I am clear from the bloud of this woman 47 Then all the people turned them towards him and said What mean those words that thou hast spoken 48 So he standing in the midst of them said Are ye such fools ye sons of Israel that without examination or knowledge of the truth ye have condemned a daughter of Israel 49 Return again to the place of judgement for they have born false witness against her 50 Wherefore all the people turned again in haste and the elders said unto him Come sit down among us and shew it us seeing God hath given thee the honour of an elder 51 Then said Daniel unto them Put these two aside one far from another and I will examine them 52 So when they were put asunder one from another he called one of them and said unto him O thou that art waxen old in wickedness now thy sins which thou hast committed aforetime are come to light 53 For thou hast pronounced false judgement and hast condemned the innocent and hast let the guilty go free albeit the Lord saith * Exod. 23.7 The innocent and righteous shalt thou not slay 54 Now then if thou hast seen her tell me Under what tree sawest thou them companying together Who answered Under a †Gr. lentiâ—k-trâ—â— mastick-tree 55 And Daniel said Very well thou hast lied against thine own head for even now the angel of God hath received the sentence of God to cut thee in two 56 So
he put him aside and commanded to bring the other and said unto him O thou seed of Chanaan and not of Juda beauty hath deceived thee and lust hath perverted thine heart 57 Thus have ye dealt with the daughters of Israel and they for fear companied with you but the daughter of Juda would not abide your wickedness 58 Now therefore tell me Under what tree didst thou take them companying together Who answered Under a ‖ Or kinde of oak holm-tree 59 Then said Daniel unto him Well thou hast also lied against thine own head for the angel of God waiteth with the sword to cut thee in two that he may destroy you 60 With that all the assembly cried out with a loud voice and praised God who saveth them that trust in him 61 And they rose against the two elders for Daniel had convctied them of false witness by their own mouth 62 And according to the law of Moses * Deut. 19.19 Prov. 19.5 they did unto them in such sort as they maliciously intended to do to their neighbour and they put them to death Thus the innocent bloud was saved the same day 63 Therefore Chelcias and his wife praised God for their daughter Susanna with Joacim her husband and all the kindred because there was no dishonesty found in her 64 From that day forth was Daniel had in great reputation in the sight of the people ¶ The history of the destruction of †Gr. Bels dragon Bel and the Dragon cut off from the end of DANIEL 19 The fraud of Bels priests is discovered by Daniel 27 and the dragon slain which was worshipped 33 Daniel is preserved in the lions â—en 42 The king doth acknowledge the God of Daniel and casteth his enemies into the same den ANd king Astyages was gathered to his fathers and Cyrus of Persia received his kingdom 2 And Daniel ‖ Or liveâ— with the king conversed with the king and was honoured above all his friends 3 Now the Babylonians had an idol called Bel. and there were spent upon him every day twelve great measures of fine flour and fourty sheep and six vessels of wine 4 And the king worshipped it and went daily to adore it but Daniel worshipped his own God And the king said unto him Why dost not thou worship Bel 5 Who answered and said Because I may not worship idols made with hands but the living God who hath created the heaven and the earth and hath sovereignty over all flesh 6 Then said the king unto him Thinkest thou not that Bel is a living god seest thou not how much he eateth and drinketh every day 7 Then Daniel smiled and said O king be not deceived for this is but clay within and brass without and did never * Ecclus 30.19 eat or drink any thing 8 So the king was wroth and called for his priests and said unto them If ye tell me not who this is that devoureth these expenses ye shall die 9 But if you can certifie me that Bel devoureth them then Daniel shall die for he hath spoken blasphemy against Bel. And Daniel said unto the king Let it be according to thy word 10 Now the priests of Bel were threescore and ten beside their wives and children and the king went with Daniel into the temple of Bel. 11 So Bels priests said Lo we go out but thou O king set on the meat and make ready the wine and shut the door fast and seal it with thine own signet 12 And to morrow when thou comest in if thou findest not that Bel hath eaten up all we will suffer death or else Daniel that speaketh falsly against us 13 And they little regarded it for under the table they had made a privy entrance whereby they entred in continually and consumed those things 14 So when they were gone forth the king set meats before Bel. Now Daniel had commanded his servants to bring ashes and those they strewed throughout all the temple in the presence of the king alone then went they out and shut the door and sealed it with the kings signet and so departed 15 Now in the night came the priests with their wives and children as they were wont to do and did eat and drink up all 16 In the morning betime the king arose and Daniel with him 17 And the king said Daniel are the seals whole And he said Yea O king they be whole 18 And assoon as he had opened the door the king looked upon the table and cried with a loud voice Great art thou O Bel and with thee is no deceit at all 19 Then laughed Daniel and held the king that he should not go in and said Behold now the pavement and mark well whose footsteps are these 20 And the king said I see the footsteps of men women and children And then the king was angry 21 And took the priests with their wives and children who shewed him the privy doors where they came in and consumed such things as were upon the table 22 Therefore the king slew them and delivered Bel into Daniels power who destroyed him and his temple 23 ‖ Some add this title Of the dragon And in that same place there was a great dragon which they of Babylon worshipped 24 And the king said unto Daniel Wilt thou also say that this is of brass so he liveth he eateth and drinketh thou canst not say that he is no living god therefore worship him 25 Then said Daniel unto the king I will worship the Lord my God for he is the living God 26 But give me leave O king and I shall slay this dragon without sword or staff The king said I give thee leave 27 Then Daniel took pitch and fat and hair and did seethe them together and made lumps thereof this he put in the dragons mouth and so the dragon burst in sunder and Daniel said ‖ Or Behold what you worship Lo These are the gods you worship 28 When they of Babylon heard that they took great indignation and conspired against the king saying The king is become a Jew and he hath destroyed Bel he hath slain the dragon and put the priests to death 29 So they came to the king and said Deliver us Daniel or else we will destroy thee and thine house 30 Now when the king saw that they pressed him sore being constrained he * Dan 6.16 delivered Daniel unto them 31 Who cast him into the lions den where he was six days 32 And in the den there were seven lions and they had given them every day ‖ Or two slaves two carcases and two sheep which then were not given to them to the intent they might devour Daniel 33 Now there was in Jewry a prophet called Habbacuc who had ‖ Or sod made pottage and had broken bread in a bowl and was going into the field for to bring it to the reapers 34 But the angel of the Lord said unto Habbacuc Go
which a little afore was full of fear and trouble when the almighty Lord appeared was filled with joy and gladness 31 Then straightways certain of Heliodorus friends prayed Onias that he would call upon the most High to grant him his life who lay ready to give up the ghost 32 So the high priest suspecting lest the king should misconceive that some treachery had been done to Heliodorus by the Jews offered a sacrifice for the health of the man 33 Now as the high priest was making an atonement the same young men in the same clothing appeared and stood beside Heliodorus saying Give Onias the high priest great thanks insomuch as for his sake the Lord hath granted thee life 34 And seeing that thou hast been scourged from heaven declare unto all men the mighty power of God and when they had spoken these words they appeared no more 35 So Heliodorus after he had offered sacrifice unto the Lord and made great vows unto him that had saved his life and saluted Onias returned with his host to the king 36 Then testified he to all men the works of the great God which he had seen with his eyes 37 And when the king asked Heliodorus who might be a fit man to be yet sent once again to Jerusalem he said 38 If thou hast any enemy or traitour send him thither and thou shalt receive him well scourged if he escape with his life for in that place no doubt there is an especial power of God 39 For he that dwelleth in heaven hath his eye on that place and defendeth it and he beateth and destroyeth them that come to hurt it 40 And the things concerning Heliodorus and the keeping of the treasury fell out on this sort CHAP. IV. 1 Simon slandereth Onias 7 Jason by corrupting the king obtaineth the office of the high priest 24 Menelaus getteth the same from Jason by the like corruption 34 Andronicus traiterously murdereth Onias 36 The king being informed thereof causeth Andronicus to be put to death 39 The wickedness of Lysimachus by the instigation of Menelaus THis Simon now of whom we spake afore having been a bewrayer of the money and of his countrey slandered Onias as if he had terrified Heliodorus and been the worker of these evils 2 Thus was he bold to call him a traitour that had deserved well of the city and tendred his own nation and was so zealous of the laws 3 But when their hatred went so far that by one of Simons â—â—ction murders were committed 4 Onias seeing the danger of this contention and that Apollonius as being the governour of Celosyria and Phenice did rage and increase Simons malice 5 He went to the king not to be an accuser of his countrey-men but seeking the good of all both publick and private 6 For he saw that it was impossible that the state should continue quiet and Simon leave his folly unless the king did look thereunto 7 But after the death of Seleucus when Antiochus called Epiphanes took the kingdom Jason the brother of Onias laboured underhand to be high priest 8 Promising unto the king by intercession three hundred and threescore talents of silver and of another revenue eighty talents 9 Besides this he promised to assigne an hundred and fifty more if he might have licence to set him up a place for exercise and for the training up of youth in the fashions of the heathen and to write them of Jerusalem by the name of Antiochians 10 Which when the king had granted and he had gotten into his hand the rule he forthwith brought his own nation to the Greekish fashion 11 And the royal priviledges granted of special favour to the Jews by the means of John the father of Eupolemus who went ambassadour to Rome for amity and aid he took away and putting down the governments which were according to the law he brought up new customs against the law 12 For he built gladly a place of exercise under the towre it self and brought the chief young men under his subjection and made them wear a hat 13 Now such was the height of Greek fashions and increase of heathenish manners through the exceeding profaneness of Jason that ungodly wretch and not high priest 14 That the priests had no courage to serve any more at the altar but despising the temple and neglecting the sacrifices hastned to be partakers of the unlawful allowance in the place of exercise after the game of ‖ Or the Discus which was a stone with an hole in the midst Discus called them forth 15 Not setting by the honours of their fathers but liking the glory of the Grecians best of all 16 By reason whereof sore calamity came upon them for they had them to be their enemies and avengers whose custom they followed so earnestly and unto whom they desired to be like in all things 17 For it is not a light thing to do wickedly against the laws of God but the time following shall declare these things 18 Now when the game that was used every fifth year was kept at Tyrus the king being present 19 This ungracious Jason sent †Gr. who were religious ambassadours special messengers from Jerusalem who were Antiochians to carry three hundred drachmes of silver to the sacrifice of Hercules which even the bearers thereof thought fit not to bestow upon the sacrifice because it was not convenient but to be reserved for other charges 20 This money then in regard of the sender was appointed to Herculeâ— sacrifice but because of the bearers thereof it was employed to the making of galleys 21 Now when Apollonius the son of Menestheus was sent into Egypt for the ‖ Or enthronizing coronation of king Ptolemeus Philometor Antiochus understanding him not to be well affected to his affairs provided for his own safety whereupon he came to Joppe and from thence to Jerusalem 22 Where he was honourably received of Jason and of the city and was brought in with torch-light and with great shoutings and so afterward went with his host unto Phenice 23 Three year afterward Jason sent Menelaus the aforesaid Simons brother to bear the money unto the king and to put him in minde of certain necessary matters 24 But he being brought to the presence of the king when he had magnified him for the glorious appearance of his power got the priesthood to himself offering more then Jason by three hundred talents of silver 25 So he came with the kings mandate bringing nothing worthy the high priesthood but having the fury of a cruel tyrant and the rage of a savage beast 26 Then Jason who had undermined his own brother being undermined by another was compelled to flee into the countrey of the Ammonites 27 So Menelaus got the principality but as for the money that he had promised unto the king he took no good order for it albeit Sostratus the ruler of the castle required it 28 For unto him appertained the gathering
And so they through mine hypocrisie and desire to live a little time and a moment longer should be deceived by me and I get a slain to mine old age and make it abominable 26 For though for the present time I should be delivered from the punishment of men yet should I not escape the hand of the Almighty neither alive nor dead 27 Wherefore now manfully changing this life I will shew my self such an one as mine age requireth 28 And leave a notable example to such as be young to die willingly and couragiously for the honourable and holy laws and when he had said these words immediately he went to the torment 29 They that led him changing the good will they bare him a little before into hatred because the foresaid speeches proceeded as they thought from ‖ Or madness or â—ridâ— a desparate minde 30 But when he was ready to die with stripes he groaned and said It is manifest unto the Lord that hath the holy knowledge that whereas I might have been delivered from death I now endure sore pains in body by being beaten but in soul am well content to suffer these things because I fear him 31 And thus this man died leaving his death for an example of a noble courage and a memorial of vertue not onely unto young men but unto all his nation CHAP. VII The constancy and cruel death of seven brethren and their mother in one day because they would not eat swines flesh at the kings commandment IT came to pass also that seven brethren with their mother were taken and compelled by the king against the law to taste swines flesh and were tormented with scourges and whips 2 But one of them that spake first said thus What wouldest thou ask or learn of us we are ready to die rather then to transgress the laws of our fathers 3 Then the king being in a rage commanded pans and caldrons to be made but. 4 Which forthwith being heared he commanded to cut out the tongue of him that spake first and to cut off the utmost parts of his body the rest of his brethren and his mother looking on 5 Now when he was thus maimed in all his members he commanded him being yet alive to be brought to the fire and to be fried in the pan and as the vapour of the pan was for a good space dispersed they exhorted one another with the mother to die manfully saying thus 6 The Lord God looketh upon us and in truth hath comfort in us as * Deu. 32.36 Moses in his song which witnessed to their faces declared saying And he shall be comforted in his servants 7 So when the first was dead after this manner they brought the second to make him a mocking-stock and when they had Pulled off the skin of his head with the hair they asked him Wilt thou eat before thou be punished throughout every member of thy body 8 But he answered in his own language and said No. Wherefore he also received the next torment in order as the former did 9 And when he was at the last gasp he said Thou like a fury takest us out of this present life but the King of the world shall raise us up who have died for his laws unto everlasting life 10 After him was the third made a mocking-stock and when he was required he put out his tongue and that right soon holding forth his hands manfully 11 And said couragiously These I had from heaven and for his laws I despise them and from him I hope to receive them again 12 Insomuch that the king and they that were with him marvelled at the young mans courage for that he nothing regarded the pains 13 Now when this man was dead also they tormented and mangled the fourth in like manner 14 So when he was ready to die he said thus It is good being put to death by men to look for hope from God to be raised up again by him as for thee thou shalt have no resurrection to life 15 Afterward they brought the fifth also and mangled him 16 Then looked he unto the king and said Thou hast power over men thou art corruptible thou doest what thou wilt yet think not that our nation is forsaken of God 17 But abide a while and behold his great power how he will torment thee and thy seed 18 After him also they brought the sixth who being ready to die said Be not deceived without cause for we suffer these things for our selves having sinned against our God therefore marvellous things are done unto us 19 But think not thou that takest in hand to strive against God that thou shalt escape unpunished 20 But the mother was marvellous above all and worthy of honourable memory for when she saw her seven sons slain within the space of one day she bare it with a good courage because of the hope that she had in the Lord. 21 Yea she exhorted every one of them in her own language filled with couragious spirits and stirring up her womanish thoughts with a manly stomach she said unto them 22 I cannot tell how you came into my womb for I neither gave you breath nor life neither was it I that formed the members of every one of you 23 But doubtless the Creatour of the world who formed the generation of man and found out the beginning of all things will also of his own mercy give you breath and life again as you now regard not your own selves for his laws sake 24 Now Antiochus thinking himself despised and suspecting it to be a reproachful speech whilest the youngest was yet alive did not onely exhort him by words but also assured him with oaths that he would make him both a rich and a happy man if he would turn from the laws of his fathers and that also he would take him for his friend and trust him with affairs 25 But when the young man would in no case hearken unto him the king called his mother and exhorted her that she would counsel the young man to save his life 26 And when he had exhorted her with many words she promised him that she would counsel her son 27 But she bowing her self towards him laughing the cruel tyrant to scorn spake in her countrey language on this manner O my son have pity upon me that bare thee nine moneths in my womb and gave thee such three years and nourished thee and brought thee up unto this age and endured the troubles of education 28 I beseech thee my son look upon the heaven and the earth and all that is therein and consider that God made them of things that were not and so was mankinde made likewise 29 Fear not this tormentour but being worthy of thy brethren take thy death that I may receive thee again in mercy with thy brethren 30 Whiles she was yet speaking these words the young man said Whom wait ye for I will not obey the kings

II. 1 The wise-men out of the east are directed to Christ by a star 11 They worship him and offer their presents 14 Joseph fleeth into Egypt with Jesus and his mother 16 Herod slayeth the children 20 Himself dieth 23 Christ is brought back again into Galilee to Nazareth Now when * Luke 1.6 7. Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king behold there came wise-men from the east to Jorusalem 2 Saying Where is he that is born King of the Jews for we have â—en his star in the east and are come to worship him 3 When Herod the king had heard these things he was troubled and all Jerusalem with him 4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together he demanded of them where Christ should be born 5 And they said unto him In Bethlehem of Judea for thus it is written by the prophet 6 * Mic. 5.2 Joh. 7.42 And thou Bethlehem in the land of Juda art not the least among the princes of Juda for out of thee shall come a Governour that shall ‖ Or seed rule my people Israel 7 Then Herod when he had privily called the wise-men enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said Go and search diligently for the young childe and when ye have found him bring me word again that I may come and worship him also 9 When they had heard the king they departed and so the star which they saw in the east went before them till it came and stood over where the young childe was 10 When they saw the star they rejoyced with exceeding great joy 11 ¶ And when they were come into the house they saw the young childe with Mary his mother and tell down and worshipped him and when they had opened their treasures they ‖ Or â—â—eed presented unto him gifts gold and frankincense and myrrh 12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod they departed into their own countrey another way 13 And when they were departed behold the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream saying Arise and take the young childe and his mother and flee into Egypt and be thou there until I bring thee word for Herod will seek the young childe to destroy him 14 When he arose he took the young childe and his mother by night and departed into Egypt 15 And was there until the death of Herod that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet saying * Hos 1â— â— Out of Egypt have I called my son 16 ¶ Then Herod when he saw that he was mocked of the wise-men was exceeding wroth and sent forth and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem and in all the coasts thereof from two years old and under according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise-men 17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by * Jer. 31.15 Jeremy the prophet saying 18 In Rama was there a voice heard lamentation and weeping and great mourning Rachel weeping for her children and
him his disciples and saith unto them Verily I say unto you that this poor widow hath cast more in then all they which have cast into the treasury 44 For all they did cast in of their abundance but she of her want did cast in all that she had even all her living CHAP. XIII 1 Christ foretelleth the destruction of the temple 9 the persecutions for the gospel 10 that the gospel must be preached to all nations 14 that great calamities shall happen to the Jews 24 and the manner of his coming to judgement 32 The hour whereof being known to none every man is to watch and pray that we be not found unprovided when he cometh to eath one particularly by death ANd * Mat. 24. ◠as he went out of the temple one of his disciples saith unto him Master see what manner of stones and what buildings are hero 2 And Jesus answering said unto him Seest thou these great buildings there shall not be left one stone upon another that shall not be thrown down 3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately 4 * Mat. 24.3 Tell us when shall these things be and what shall be the signe when all these things shall be fulfilled 5 And Jesus answering them began to say Take heed lest any man deceive you 6 For many shall come in my name saying I am Christ and shall deceive many 7 And when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars be ye not troubled for such things must needs be but the end shall not be yet 8 For nation shall rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom and there shall be earth-quakes in divers places and there shall be famines and troubles these are the beginnings of ‖ The word in the original importeth the pains of a woman in travail sorrows 9 ¶ But take heed to your selves for they shall deliver you up to councils and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten and ye shall be brought before rulers kings for my sake for a testimony against them 10 And the gospel must first be published among all nations 11 * Mat. 10.19 But when they shall lead you and deliver you up take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak neither do ye premeditate but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour that speak ye for it is not ye that speak but the holy Ghost 12 Now the brother shall betray the brother to death and the father the son and children shall rise up against their parents and shall cause them to be put to death 13 And ye shall be hated of all men for my names sake but he that shall endure unto the end the same shall be saved 14 ¶ * Mat. 24.15 But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation spoken of by Damel the prophet standing where it ought not let him that readeth understand then let them that be in Judea flee to the mountains 15 And let him that is on the house-top not go down into the house neither enter therein to take any thing out of his house 16 And let him that is in the field not turn back again for to take up his garment 17 But wo to them that are with childe and to them that give suck in those days 18 And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter 19 For in those days shall be affliction such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time neither shall be 20 And except that the Lord had shortned those days no flesh should be saved but for the elects sake whom he hath chosen he hath shortned the days 21 * Mat. 24.23 And then if any man shall say to you Lo here is Christ or lo he is there beleeve him not 22 For false Christs and false prophets shall rise and shall shew signs and wonders to seduce if it were possible even the elect 23 But take ye heed behold I have foretold you all things 24 ¶ * Mat. 24.29 But in those days after that tribulation the sun shall be darkned and the moon shall not give her sight 25 And the stars of heaven shall fall and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken 26 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory 27 And then shall he send his angels and shall gather together his elect from the four winds from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven 28 Now learn a parable of the fig-tree When her branch is yet tender and putteth sorth leaves ye know that summer is near 29 So ye in like manner When ye shall see these things come to pass know that it is nigh even at the doors 30 Verily I say unto you that this generation shall not pass till all these things be done 31 Heaven and earth shall pass away but my words shall not pass away 32 ¶ But of that day and that hour knoweth no man no not the angels which are in heaven neither the Son but the Father 33 * Mat. 24.42 Take ye heed watch and pray for ye know not when the time is 34 For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey who lest his house and gave authority to his servants and to every man his work and commanded the porter to watch 35 Watch ye therefore for ye know not when the master of the house cometh at even or at midnight or at the cock-crowing or in the morning 36 Lest coming suddenly he finde you sleeping 37 And what I say unto you I say unto all Watch. CHAP. XIV 1 A conspiracy against Christ 3 Precious ointment is poured on his head by a woman 10 Judas selleth his Master for money 12 Christ himself foretelieth how he shall be betrared of one of his disciples 22 after the pass-over prepared and eaten instituteth his supper 26 declareth aforehand the flight of all his disciples and Peters denial 43 Judas betrayeth him with a kiss 46 He is apprehended in the garden 55 falsly accused and impiously condemned of the Jews council 65 shamefully abused by them 66 and thrice denied of Peter AFter * Mat. 26.2 two days was the feast of the pass-over and of unleavened bread and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft and put him to death 2 But they said Not on the feast day lest there be an uproar of the people 3 ¶ * Mat. 26.6 And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper as he sat at meat there came a woman having an alabaster-box of ointment of ‖ Or part nard or liquid nard spikenard very precious and she brake the box and poured it on his head 4 And there were some that had indignation within themselves and said Why was this waste of the
turn again to thee saying I repent thou shalt forgive him 5 And the apostles said unto the Lord Increase our faith 6 * Matth. 1â— â—0 And the Lord said If ye had faith as a grain of mustard-seed ye might say unto this sycamine-tree Be thou plucked up by the root and be thou planted in the sea and it should obey you 7 But which of you having a servant plowing or feeding cattle will lay unto him by and by when he is come from the field Go and sit down to meat 8 And will not rather say unto him Make ready wherewith I may sup and gird thy self and serve me till I have eaten and drunken and afterward thou shalt eat and drink 9 Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him I trow not 10 So likewise ye when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you say We are unprofitable servants we have done that which was our duty to do 11 ¶ And it came to pass as he went to Jerusalem that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee 12 And as he entred into a certain village there met him ten men that were lepers which stood afar off 13 And they lifted up their voices and said Jesus Master have mercy on us 14 And when he saw them he said unto them * Levit 14.2 Go shew your selves unto the priests And it came to pass that as they went they were cleansed 15 And one of them when he saw that he was healed turned back and with a loud voice glorified God 16 And fell down on his face at his feet giving him thanks and he was a Samaritan 17 And Jesus answering said Were there not ten cleansed but where are the nine 18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God save this stranger 19 And he said unto him Arise go thy way thy faith hath made thee whole 20 ¶ And when he was demanded of the Pharisees when the kingdom of God should come he answered them and said The kingdom of God cometh not ‖ Or with outward soew with observation 21 Neither shall they say Lo here or lo there for behold the kingdom of God is ‖ Or among you within you 22 And he said unto his disciples The days will come when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man and ye shall not see it 23 * Matth. 24.23 And they shall say to you See here or see there go not after them nor follow them 24 For as the lightning that lightneth out of the one part under heaven shineth unto the other part under heaven so shall also the Son of man be in his day 25 But first must he suffer many things and be rejected of this generation 26 * Gen. 7. And as it was in the days of Noe so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man 27 They did eat they drank they married wives they were given in marriage until the day that Noe entred into the ark and the floud came and destroyed them all 28 * Gen. 19. Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot they did eat they drank they bought they sold they planted they builded 29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all 30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed 31 In that day he which shall be upon the house-top and his stull in the house let him not come down to take it away and he that is in the field let him likewise not return back 32 * Gen. 19. â—6 Remember Lots wife 33 * Matth. 16.25 Whosoever shall seek to save his lise shall lose it and whosoever shall lofe his life shall preserve it 34 * Matth. 24.40 I tell you in that night there shall be two men in one bed the one shall be taken and the other shall be left 35 Two women shall be grinding together the one shall be taken and the other left 36 ‖ This 35 verse is wanting in most of the Greek Copies Two men shall be in the field the one shall be taken and the other left 37 And they answered and said unto him * Matth. 24.28 Where Lord And he said unto them Wheresoever the body is thither will the eagles be gathered together CHAP. XVIII 3 Of the importunate widow 9 Of the Pharisee and the publican 15 Children brought to Christ 18 A ruler that would follow Christ but is bindred by his riches 28 The reward of them that leave all for his sake 31 He foresheweth â—is death 35 and restoreth a blinde man to his sight ANd he spake a parable unto them to this end that men onght * 1 Thes 5.17 always to pray and not to saint 2 Saying There was in a city a judge which feared not God neither regarded man 3 And there was a widow in that city and she came unto him saying Avenge me of mine adversary 4 And he would not for a while but afterward he said within himself Though I fear not God nor regard man 5 Yet because this widow troubleth me I will avenge her lest by her continual coming the weary me 6 And the Lord said Hear what the unjust judge saith 7 And shall not God avenge his own elect which cry day and night unto him though he bear long with them 8 I tell you that he will avenge them speedily Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh shall he finde faith on the earth 9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves ‖ Or as being righteous that they were righteous and despised others 10 Two men went up into the temple to pray the one a Pharisee and the other a publican 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself God I thank thee that I am not as other men are extortioners unjust adulterers or even as this publican 12 I fast twice in the week I give tithes of all that I possess 13 And the publican standing afar off would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven but smote upon his breast saying God be merciful to me a sinner 14 I tell you this man went down to his house justified rather then the other * Matth. 23.12 for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted 15 And they brought unto him also infants that he would touch them but when his disciples saw it they rebuked them 16 But Jesus called them unto him and said Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not for of such is the kingdom of God 17 Verily I say unto you Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little childe shall in no wise enter therein 18 * Matth. 19. â—â— And a certain ruler
asked him saying Good Master what shall I do to inherit eternal life 19 And Jesus said unto him Why callest thou me good none is good save one that is God 20 Thou knowest the commandments Do not commit adultery Do not kill Do not steal Do not bear false witness Honour thy father and thy mother 21 And he said All these have I kept from my youth up 22 Now when Jesus heard these things he said unto him Yet lackest thou one thing Sell all that thou hast and distribute unto the poor and thou shalt have treasure in heaven and come follow me 23 And when he heard this he was very sorrowful for he was very rich 24 And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful he said How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through a needles eye then for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God 26 And they that heard it said Who then can be saved 27 And he said The things which are impossible with men are possible with God 28 * Matth. 19.27 Then Peter said Lo we have left all and followed thee 29 And he said unto them Verily I say unto you there is no man that hath lest house or parents or brethren or wife or children for the kingdom of Gods sake 30 Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time and in the world to come life everlasting 31 ¶ * Matth. 20.17 Then he took unto him the twelve and said unto them Behold we go up to Jerusalem and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished 32 For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles and shall be mocked and spitefully entreated and spitted on 33 And they shall scourge him and put him to death and the third day he shall rise again 34 And they understood none of these things and this saying was hid from them neither knew they the things which were spoken 35 ¶ * Matth 20.29 And it came to pass that as he was come nigh unto Jericho a certain blinde man lat by the way-side begging 36 And hearing the multitude pass by he asked what it meant 37 And they told him that Jesus of Nazareth passeth by 38 And he cried saying Jesus thou son of David have mercy on me 39 And they which went before rebuked him that he should hold his peace but he cried so much the more Thou son of David have mercy on me 40 And Jesus stood and commanded him to be brought unto him and when he was come near he asked him 41 Saying What wilt thou that I shall do unto thee And he said Lord that I may receive my sight 42 And Jesus said unto him Receive thy sight thy faith hath saved thee 43 And immediately he received his sight and followed him glorifying God and all the people when they saw it gave praise unto God CHAP. XIX 1 Of Zacheus a publican 11 The ten pieces of money 28 Christ rideth into Jerusalem with triumph 41 weepeth over it 45 driveth the buyers and sellers out of the temple 47 teaching daily in it The rulers would have destroyed him but for fear of the people ANd Jesus entred and passed through Jericho 2 And behold there was a man named Zacheus which was the chief among the publicans and he was rich 3 And he sought to see Jesus who he was and could not for the preass because he was little of stature 4 And he ran before and climbed up into a sycomore-tree to see him for he was to pass that way 5 And when Jesus came to the place he looked up and saw him and said unto him Zacheus make haste and come down for to day I must abide at thy house 6 And he made haste and came down and received him joyfully 7 And when they saw it they all murmured saying That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner 8 And Zacheus stood and said unto the Lord behold Lord the half of my goods I give to the poor and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation I restore him four-fold 9 And Jesus said unto him This day is salvation come to this house forsomuch as he also is the son of Abraham 10 * Matth. 18.11 For the son of man is come to seek to save that which was lost 11 And as they heard these things he added and spake a parable because he was nigh to Jerusalem and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear 12 * Matth. 25.14 He said therefore A certain noble man went into a far countrey to receive for himself a kingdom and to return 13 And he called his ten servants and delivered them ten ‖ Mina here translated a pound is twelve ounces and an half which according to five shillings the ounce is three pounds two shillings six pence pounds and said unto them Occupy till I come 14 But his citizens hated him and sent a message after him saying We will not have this man to reign over us 15 And it came to pass that when he was returned having received the kingdom then he commanded these servants to be called unto him to whom he had given the money that he might know how much every man had gained by trading 16 Then came the first saying Lord thy pound hath gained ten pounds 17 And he said unto him Well thou good servant because thou hast been faithful in a very little have thou authority over ten cities 18 And the second came saying Lord thy pound hath gained five pounds 19 And he said likewise to him Be thou also over five cities 20 And another came saying Lord behold here is thy pound which I have kept laid up in a napkin 21 For I feared thee because thou art an austere man thou takest up that thou layedst not down and reapest that thou didst not sow 22 And he saith unto him Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee thou wicked servant Thou knewest that I was an austere man taking up that I laid not down and reaping that I did not sow 23 Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury 24 And he said unto them that stood by Take from him the pound and give it to him that hath ten pounds 25 And they said unto him Lord he hath ten pounds 26 For I say unto you * Matth. 13.12 That unto every one which hath shall be given and from him that hath not even that he hath shall be taken away from him 27 But those mine enemies which would not that I should reign over them bring hither and slay them before me 28 ¶ And when he had thus spoken he went before ascending up to Jerusalem 29 * Matth. 21.1 And it came to pass when
fields * Mat. 9.37 for they are white already to harvest 36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages and gathereth fruit unto life eternal that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoyce together 37 And herein is that saying true One soweth another reapeth 38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour other men laboured and ye are entred into their labours 39 ¶ And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman which testified He told me all that ever I did 40 So when the Samaritans were come unto him they besought him that he would tarry with them and he abode there two days 41 And many mo believed because of his own word 42 And said unto the woman Now we believe not because of thy saying for we have heard him our selves and know that this is indeed the Christ the Saviour of the world 43 ¶ * Mat. 13.57 Now after two days he departed thence went into Galilee 44 For Jesus himself testified that a prophet hath no honour in his own countrey 45 Then when he was come into Galilee the Galileans received him having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast for they also went unto the feast 46 So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee * Chap. 2.1 where he made the water wine And there was a certain ‖ Or courtier or ruler noble man whose son was sick at Capernaum 47 When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judea into Galilee he went unto him and besought him that he would come down and heal his son for he was at the point of death 48 Then said Jesus unto him Except ye see signs and wonders ye will not beleeve 49 The noble man saith unto him Sir come down ere my childe die 50 Jesus saith unto him Go thy way thy son liveth And the man beleeved the word that Jesus had spoken unto him he went his way 51 And as he was now going down his servants met him and told him saying Thy son liveth 52 Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend and they said unto him Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him 53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour in the which Jesua said unto him Thy son liveth himself beleeved his whole house 54 This is again the second miracle that Jesus did when he was come out of Judea into Galilee CHAP. V. 1 Jesus on the sabbath daâ— cureth him that was diseased eight and thirty years 10 The Jews therefore cavilâ— and persecute him for it 17 He answereth for himself and reproveth them shewing by the testimony of his Father 32 of John 36 of his works 39 and of the scriptures who he is AFter * Levit. 23.2 Deut. 16. this there was a feast of the Jews Jesus went up to Jerusalem 2 Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep ‖ Or gate market a pool which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda having five porches 3 In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk of blinde halt withered waiting for the moving of the water 4 For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool and troubled the water whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepred in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had 5 And a certain man was there which had an infirmity thirty eight years 6 When Jesus saw him lie and knew that he had been now a long time in that case he saith unto him Wilt thou be made whole 7 The impotent man answered him Sir I have no man when the water is troubled to put me into the pool but while I am coming another steppeth down before me 8 Jesus saith unto him Rise take up thy bed and walk 9 And immediately the man was made whole and took up his bed and walked and on the same day was the sabbath 10 ¶ The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured It is the sabbath-day * Jet 17.22 it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed 11 He answered them He that made me whole the same said unto me Take up thy bed and walk 12 Then asked they him What man is that which said unto thee Take up thy bed and walk 13 And he that was healed wist not who it was for Jesus had conveyed himself away ‖ Or from the multitude that was a multitude being in that place 14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple and said unto him Behold thou art made whole sin no more left a worse thing come unto thee 15 The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus which had made him whole 16 And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus and sought to slay him because he had done these things on the sabbath-day 17 ¶ But Jesus answered them My Father worketh hitherto and I work 18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him because he not onely had broken the sabbath but said also that God was his Father making himself equal with God 19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them Verily verily I say unto you The Son can do nothing of himself but what he seeth the Father do for what things soever he doeth these also doeth the Son likewise 20 For the Father loveth the Son and sheweth him all things that himself doeth and he will shew him greater works then these that ye may marvel 21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead and quickneth them even so the Son quickneth whom he will 22 For the Father judgeth no man but hath committed all judgement unto the Son 23 That all men should honour the Son even as they honour the Father He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him 24 Verily verily I say unto you He that heareth my word and beleeveth on him that sent me hath everlasting life and shall not come into condemnation but is passed from death unto life 25 Verily verily I say unto you The hour is coming and now is when the dead shall hear the voyce of the Son of God and they that hear shall live 26 For as the Father hath life in himself so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself 27 And hath given him authority to execute judgement also because he is the Son of man 28 Marvel not at this for the hour is coming in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voyce 29 And shall come forth * Mat. 25. â—6 they that have done good unto the resurrection of life and they that have done evil unto the resurrection of dammation 30 I can of mine own self do nothing as I hear I judge and my judgement is just because I seek not mine own will but the will of the Father which hath sent me 31 * Cha. 8.14 If I bear
stone me 33 The Jews answered him saying For a good work we stone thee not but for blasphemy and because that thou being a man makest thy self God 34 Jesus answered them * Psal 8â— 6 Is it not written in your law I said Ye are gods 35 If he called them gods unto whom the word of God came and the scripture cannot be broken 36 Say ye of him whom the Father hath sanctified and sent into the world Thou blasphemest because I said I am the Son of God 37 If I do not the works of my Father beleeve me not 38 But if I do though ye beleeve not me beleeve the works that ye may know and beleeve that the Father is in me and I in him 39 Therefore they sought again to take him but he escaped out of their hand 40 And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized and there he abode 41 And many reforted unto him and said John did no miracle but all things that John spake of this man were true 42 And many beleeved on him there CHAP. XI 1 Christ raiseth Lazarus four days buried 4â— Many Jews beleeve 47 The bâ—â—h priests and Pharisees gather a council against Christ 49 Caiaphas prophesieth 54 Jesus hid himself 55 At the pass-over they enquire after him and lay wait for him NOw a certain man was sick named Lazarus of Bethany the town of Mary and her sister Martha 2 * Mat. 26.7 It was that Mary which anoâ—nted the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair whose brother Lazarus was sick 3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him saying Lord behold he whom thou lovest is sick 4 When Jesus heard that he said This sickness is not unto death but for the glory of God that the Son of God might be glorified thereby 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus 6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick he abode two days still in the same place where he was 7 Then after that saith he to his disciples Let us go into Judea again 8 His disciples say unto him Master the Jews of late sought to stone thee and goest thou thither again 9 Jesus answered Are there not twelve hours in the day If any man walk in the day he stumbleth not because he seeth the light of this world 10 But if a man walk in the night he stumbleth because there is no light in him 11 These things said he and after that he saith unto them Our friend Lazarus sleepeth but I go that I may awake him out of sleep 12 Then said his disciples Lord if he sleep he shall do well 13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep 14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly Lazarus is dead 15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there to the intent ye may beleeve nevertheless let us go unto him 16 Then said Thomas which is called Didymus unto his fellow-disciples Let us also go that we may die with him 17 Then when Jesus came he sound that he had lien in the grave four days already 18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem ‖ That is about two miles about fifteen furlongs off 19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary to comfort them concerning their brother 20 Then Martha assoon as she heard that Jesus was coming went and met him but Mary sat still in the house 21 Then said Martha unto Jesus Lord if thou hadst been here my brother had not died 22 But I know that even now whatsoever thou wilt ask of God God will give it thee 23 Jesus saith unto her Thy brother shall rise again 24 Martha saith unto him * Luk. 14.14 Chap. 5.29 I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day 25 Jesus said unto her I am the resurrection and the * Ch. â— 35 life he that beleeveth in me tâ—ough he were dead yet shall he live 26 And whosoever liveth and beleeveth in me shall never die Beleevest thou this 27 She saith unto him Yea Lord I beleeve that thou art the Christ the Son of God which should come into the world 28 And when she had so said she went her way and called Mary her sister secretly saying The Master is come and calleth for thee 29 Assoon as she heard that she arose quickly and came unto him 30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town but was in that place where Martha met him 31 The Jews then which were with her in the house and comforted her when they saw Mary that she rose up hastily and went out followed her saving She goeth unto the grave to weep there 32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was and saw him she fell down at his feet saying unto him Lord if thou hadst been here my brother had not died 33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping and the Jews also weeping which came with her he groaned in the spirit and †Gr. be troubled himself was troubled 34 And said Where have ye laid him They say unto him Lord come and see 35 Jâ—sus wept 36 Then said the Jews Behold how he loved him 37 And some of them said Could not this man * Chap. 9.6 which opened the eyes of the blinde have caused that even this man should not have died 38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave It was a cave and a stone lay upon it 39 Jesus said Take ye away the stone Martha the sister of him that was dead saith unto him Lord by this time he stinketh for he hath been dead four days 40 Jesus saith unto her Said I not unto thee that if thou wouldest beleeve thou shouldest see the glory of God 41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was said And Jesus list up his eyes and said Father I thank thee that thou hast heard me 42 And I knew that thou hearest me always but because of the people which stand by I said it that they may beleeve that thou hast sent me 43 And when he thus had spoken he cried with a loud voice Lazarus come forth 44 And he that was dead came sorth bound hand and foot with grave-clothes and his face was bound about with a napkin Jesus saith unto them Loose him and let him go 45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary and had seen the things which Jesus did beleeved on him 46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees and told them what things Jesus had done 47 ¶ Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council and said What do we for this man doeth many miracles 48 If we let him thus alone all men will beleeve on him and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation 49 And one of them named Caiaphas being the high
law The Jews therefore said unto him It is not lawful for us to put any man to death 32 * Mat. 20.19 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which he spake signifying what death he should die 33 * Mat. 27.11 Then Pilate entred into the judgement-hall again and called Jesus and said unto him Art thou the king of the Jews 34 Jesus answered him Sayest thou this thing of thy self or did others tell it thee of me 35 Pilate answered Am I a Jew Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me What hast thou done 36 Jesus answered My kingdom is not of this world if my kingdom were of this world then would my servants fight that I should not be delivered to the Jews but now is my kingdom not from hence 37 Pilate therefore said unto him Art thou a king then Jesus answered Thou sayest that I am a king To this end was I born and for this cause came I into the world that I should bear witness unto the truth Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice 38 Pilate saith unto him What is truth And when he had said this he went out again unto the Jews and saith unto them I finde in him no fault at all 39 * Mat. 27.15 But ye have a custom that I should release unto you one at the pass-over will ye therefore that I release unto you the king of the Jews 40 * Act. 3.14 Then cried they all again saying Plot this man but Barabbas Now Barabbas was a robber CHAP. XIX 1 Christ is scourged crowned with thorns and beaten 4 Pilate is desirous to release him but being overcome with the outrage of the Jews he delivered him to be crucified 23 They cast lots for his garments 26 He commendeth his mother to John 28 He dieth 31 His side is pierced 38 He is buried by Joseth and Nicodemus THen * Mat. 27.26 Pilate therefore took Jesus and scourged him 2 And the souldiers platted a crown of thorns and put it on his head and they put on him a purple robe 3 And said Hail king of the Jews and they smote him with their hands 4 Pilate therefore went forth again and saith unto them Behold I bring him forth to you that ye may know that I finde no fault in him 5 Then came Jesus forth wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe And Pilate saith vnto them Behold the man 6 When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him they cried out saying Crucifie him crucifie him Pilate saith unto them Take ye him and crucifie him for I finde no fault in him 7 The Jews answered him We have a law and by our law he ought to die because he made himself the Son of God 8 ¶ When Pilate therefore heard that saying he was the more afraid 9 And went again into the judgement-hall and saith unto Jesus Whence art thou but Jesus gave him no answer 10 Then saith Pilate unto him Speakest thou not unto me knowest thou not that I have power to crucifie thee and have power to release thee 11 Jesus answered Thou couldest have no power at all against me except it were given thee from above therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin 12 And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him but the Jews cried out saying If thou let this man go thou art not Cesars friend whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Cesar 13 ¶ When Pilate therefore heard that saying he brought Jesus forth and sat down in the judgement-seat in a place that is called the Pavement but in the Hebrew Gabbatha 14 And it was the preparation of the pass-over and about the sixth hour and he saith unto the Jews Behold your king 15 But they cried out Away with him away with him crucifie him Pilate saith unto them Shall I crucifie your king The chief priests answered We have no king but Cesar 16 * Mat. 27.31 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified And they took Jesus and led him away 17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a scull which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha 18 Where they crucified him and two other with him on either side one and Jesus in the midst 19 ¶ And Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross And the writing was JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS 20 This title then read many of the Jews for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city and it was written in Hebrew and Greek and Latine 21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate Write not The king of the Jews but that he said I am king of the Jews 22 Pilate answered What I have written I have written 23 ¶ * Mat. 27.35 Then the souldiers when they had crucified Jesus took his garments and made four parts to every souldier a part and also his coat now the coat was without seam ‖ Or wrought woven from the top throughout 24 They said therefore among themselves Let us not rend it but cast lots for it whose it shall be that the scripture might be fulfilled which saith * Ps 22.18 They parted my raiment among them and for my vesture they did cast lots These things therefore the souldiers did 25 ¶ Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother and his mothers sister Mary the wife of ‖ Or Clopas Cleophas and Mary Magdalene 26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother and the disciple standing by whom he loved he saith unto his mother Woman behold thy son 27 Then saith he to the disciple Behold thy mother And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home 28 ¶ After this Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished * Psa 69.21 that the scripture might be fulfilled saith I thirst 29 Now there was set a vessel full of vineger and they filled a spunge with vineger and put it upon hyssop and put it to his mouth 30 When Jesus therefore had received the vineger he said It is finished and he bowed his head and gave up the ghost 31 The Jews therefore because it was the preparation that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath-day for that sabbath-day was an high day besought Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away 32 Then came the souldiers and brake the legs of the first and of the other which was crucified with him 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was dead already they brake not his legs 34 But one of the souldiers with a spear pierced his side and forthwith came there out bloud and water 35 And he that saw it bare record and his record is true and he knoweth that he saith true that ye might beleeve 36 For these things were done * Ex. 12.46 Num.
Peter heard that it was the Lord he girt his fishers coat unto him for he was naked and did cast himself into the sea 8 And the other disciples came in a little ship for they were not far from land but as it were two hundred cubits dragging the net with fishes 9 Assoon then as they were come to land they saw a fire of coals there and fish laid thereon and bread 10 Jesus saith unto them Bring of the fish which ye have now caught 11 Simon Peter went up and drew the net to land full of great fishes an hundred and fifty and three and for all there were so many yet was not the net broken 12 Jesus saith unto them Come and dine And none of the disciples durst ask him Who art thou knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus then cometh and taketh bread and giveth them and fish likewise 14 This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples after that he was risen from the dead 15 ¶ So when they had dined Jesus saith to Simon Peter Simon son of Jonas lovest thou me more then these He saith unto him Yea Lord thou knowest that I love thee He saith unto him Feed my lambs 16 He saith to him again the second time Simon son of Jonas lovest thou me He saith unto him Yea Lord thou knowest that I love thee He saith unto him Feed my sheep 17 He saith unto him the third time Simon son of Jonas lovest thou me Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time Lovest thou me And he said unto him Lord thou knowest all things thou knowest that I love thee Jesus saith unto him Feed my sheep 18 Verily verily I say unto thee when thou wast young thou girdedst thy self and walkedst whither thou wouldest but when thou shalt be old thou shalt stretch forth thy hands and another shall gird thee and carry thee whither thou wouldest not 19 This spake he signifying by what death he should glorifie God And when he had spoken this he saith unto him Follow me 20 Then Peterturning about seeth the disciple * Chap. 13.23 20.2 whom Jesus loved following which also leaned on his breast at supper and said Lord which is he that betrayeth thee 21 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus Lord and what shall this man do 22 Jesus saith unto him If I will that he tarry till I come what is that to thee Follow thou me 23 Then went this saying abroad among the brethren that that disciple should not die yet Jesus said not unto him He shall not die but If I will that he tarry till I come what is that to thee 24 This is the disciple which testifieth of these things and wrote these things and we know that his testimony is true 25 * Chaâ— 20.30 And there are also many other things which Jesus did the which if they should be written every one I suppose that even the world it self could not contain the books that should be written Amen ¶ The ACTS of the Apostles CHAP. I. Christ preparing his apostles to the bebolding of his ascension gathereth them together into the mount Olivet commandeth them to expect in Jerusalem the sending down of the boly Ghost promiseth after few days to send it by vertue whereof they should be witnesses unto him even to the utmost parts of the earth 9 After his ascension they are warned by two angels to depart and to set their minds upon his second coming 12 They accordingly return and giving themselves to prayer choose Matthias aposile in the place of Judas THe former treatise have I made O Theophilus of all that Jesus began both to do and teach 2 Until the day in which he was taken up after that he through the holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen 3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs being seen of them fourty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God 4 And ‖ Or â—â—ting together with them being assembled together with them commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem but wait for the promise of the Father * Luk. 24.49 which saith heâ— ye have heard of me 5 * Mat. 3.11 For John truly baptized with water but ye shall be baptized with the holy Ghost not many days hence 6 When they therefore were come together they asked of him saying Lord wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel 7 And he said unto them It is not for you to know the times or the seasons which the Father hath put in his own power 8 * Chap. 2.1 But ye shall receive ‖ Or the power of the holy Ghost coming upon you power after that the holy Ghost is come upon you and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and in Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth 9 * Luk. 24.51 And when he had spoken these things while they beheld he was taken up and a cloud received him out of their sight 10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up behold two men stood by them in white apparel 11 Which also said Ye men of Galilee why stand ye gazing up into heaven this same Jesus which is taken up from you into heaven shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven 12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Oliver which is from Jerusalem a sabbath-days journey 13 And when they were come in they went up into an upper room where abode both Peter and James and John and Andrew Philip and Thomas Bartholomew and Matthew James the son of Alpheus and Simon Zelotes and Judas the brother of â—ames 14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus and with his brethren 15 ¶ And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples and said the number of the names together were about an hundred and twenty 16 Men and brethren This scripture must needs have been fulfilled * Psal 41.9 which the holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas which was guide to them that took Jesus 17 For he was numbred with us had obtained part of this ministery 18 * Mat. 27. â— Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity and falling headlong he burst asunder in the midst and all his bowels gushed out 19 And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue Aceldama that is to say The field of bloud 20 For it is written in the book of psalms * Ps 69.23 Let his habitation be desolate and set no man dwell therein and * Ps 109.8 His ‖ Or office or charge bishoprick let

II. 1 The apostles filled with the holy Ghost and speaking divers lauguages art admired by some and derided by others 14 Whom Peter disproving and shewing that the apostles spake by the power of the holy Ghost that Jesus was rison from the deal astended into heaven had poured down the same holy Ghost and was the Mesâ—â—as a man known to them to be approved of God by his miraeles wonders and signs and is toruâ—ified without his determinate counsel and Jore knowledâ—e 37 he baptizeth a great number that were converted 41 who afterwards devoutly and charitably converse together the apostles working many miracles and God daily increasing his church ANd when the day of Pentecost was fully come they were all with one accord in one place 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind and it filled all the house where they were sitting 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire and it sat upon each of them 4 And they were all silled with the holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance 5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews devout men out of every nation under heaven 6 Now †Gr. when this voice was mads when this was noised abroad the multitude came together and were ‖ Or troubled in minde consounded because that every man heard them speak in his own language 7 And they were all amazed and marvelled saying one to another Behold are not all these which speak Galileans 8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue wherein we were born 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and the dwellers in Mesupotamia and in Judea and Cappadocia in Pontus and Asia 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia in Egypt and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene and strangers of Rome Jews and proselytes 11 Cretes and Arabians we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God 12 And they were all amazed and were in doubt saying one to another What meaneth this 13 Others mocking said These men are full of new wine 14 ¶ But Peterstanding up with the eleven lift up his voice and said unto them Ye men of Judea and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem be this known unto you and hearken to my words 15 For these are not drunken as ye suppose seeing it is but the third hour of the day 16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel 17 * Isa 44.3 Joel 2.28 And it shall come to pass in the fast days saith God I will pour out of my spirit upon all flesh and your sons and your daughters shall prophesie and your young men shall see visions and your old men shall dream dreams 18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my spirit and they shall prophesie 19 And I will shew wonders in heaven above and signs in the earth beneath bloud and sire and vapour of smoke 20 * Joel 2.31 The sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into bloud before that great and notable day of the Lord come 21 And it shall come to pass that * Rom. 10.13 whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved 22 Ye men of Israel hear these words Jesus of Nazareth a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs which God did by him in the midst of you as ye your selves also know 23 Him being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God ye have taken and by wicked hands have crucified and slain 24 Whom God hath raised up having loosed the pains of death because it was not possible that he should be holden of it 25 For David sâ—eaketh concerning him * Psal 16.8 I foresaw the Lord always before my face for he is on my right hand that I should not be moved 26 Therefore did my heart rejoyce and my tongue was glad moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope 27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell neither wilt thou suffer thine holy one to see corruption 28 Thou hast made known to me the ways of life thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance 29 Men and brethren ‖ Or I may let me freely speak unto you * 1 King 2.10 of the patriarch David that he is both dead and buried and his sepulchre is with us unto this day 30 Therefore being a prophet * Psal 132.11 and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his loyns according to the flesh he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne 31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ * Psal 16.10 that his soul was not left in hell neither his flesh did see corruption 32 This Jesus hath God raised up whereof we all are witnesses 33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted and having received of the Father the promise of the holy Ghost he hath shed forth this which ye now see and hear 34 For David is not ascended into the heavens but he saith himself * Psal 110.1 The LORD said unto my Lord Sit thou on my right hand 35 Until I makethy foes thy footstool 36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God hath made that same Jesus whom ye have crucified both Lord Christ 37 ¶ Now when they heard this they were pricked in their heart and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles Men and brethren what shall we do 38 Then Peter said unto them Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the holy Ghost 39 For the promise is unto you and to your children and to all that are afar off even as many as the Lord our God shall call 40 And with many other words did he testifie and exhort saying Save your selves from this untoward generation 41 ¶ Then they that gladly received his word were baptized and the same day there were added unto them about
kill the prisoners lest any of them should swim out and escape 43 But the centurion willing to save Paul kept them from their purpose and commanded that they which could swim should cast themselves first into the sea and get to land 44 And the rest some on boards and some on broken pieces of the ship And so it came to pass that they escaped all safe to land CHAP. XXVIII 1 Paul after his shipwrack is kindly entertained of the Barbarians 3 The viper on his hand hurteth him not 8 He healeth many diseases in the island 11 They depart towards Rome 17 He declareth to the Jews the cause of his coming 24 After his preaching some were perswaded and some beleeved not 30 Yet he preacheth there two years ANd when they were escaped then they knew that the island was called Melita 2 And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness for they kindled a fire and received us every one because of the present rain and because of the cold 3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire there came a viper out of the heat and fastned on his hand 4 And when the Barbarians law the venemous beast hang on his hand they said among themselves No doubt this man is a murderer whom though he hath escaped the sea yet vengeance suffereth not to live 5 And he shook off the beast into the fire and felt no harm 6 Howbeit they looked when he should have swoln or faln down dead suddenly but after they had looked a great while and saw no harm come to him they changed their minds and said that he was a God 7 In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island whose name was Publius who received us and lodged us three days courteously 8 And it came to pass that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloudy flux to whom Paul entred in and prayed and laid his hands on him and healed him 9 So when this was done others also which had diseases in the island came and were healed 10 Who also honoured us with many honours and when we departed they laded us with such things as were necessary 11 And after three moneths we departed in a ship of Alexandria which had wintred in the isle whose signe was Castor and Pollux 12 And landing at Syracuse we tarried there three days 13 And from thence we set a compass and came to Rhegium and after one day the south-wind blew and we came the next day to Puteoâ—â— 14 Where we found brethren and were desired to tarry with them seven days and so we went toward Rome 15 And from thence when the brethren heard of us they came to meet us as far as Appii-forum and the Three taverns whom when Paul saw he thanked God and took courage 16 And when we came to Rome the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a souldier that kept him 17 And it came to pass that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together And when they were come together he said unto them Men and brethren though I have committed nothing against the people or customs of our fathers yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans 18 Who when they had examined me would have let me go because there was no cause of death in me 19 But when the Jews spake against it I was constrained to appeal unto Cesar not that I had ought to accuse my nation of 20 For this cause therefore have I called for you to see you and to speak with you because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain 21 And they said unto him We neither received letters out of Judea concerning thee neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee 22 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest for as concerning this sect we know that every where it is spoken against 23 And when they had appointed him a day there came many to him into his lodging to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God perswading them concerning Jesus both out of the law of Moses and out of the prophets from morning till evening 24 And some beleeved the things which were spoken and some beleeved not 25 And when they agreed not among themselves they departed after that Paul had spoken one word Well spake the holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers 26 Saying * Isa 6.9 Mat. 13.14 Mar. 4.12 Luk. 8.10 Joh. 12.40 Rom. 11.8 Go unto this people and say Hearing ye shall hear and shall not understand and seeing ye shall see and not perceive 27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross and their ears are dull of hearing and their eyes have they closed lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and should be converted and I should heal them 28 Be it known therefore unto you that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles and that they will hear it 29 And when he had said these words the Jews departed and had great reasoning among themselves 30 And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house and received all that came in unto him 31 Preaching the kingdom of God and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence no man forbidding him ¶ The epistle of PAUL the Apostle to the ROMANS CHAP. I. 1 Paul commendeth his calling to the Romans 9 and his desire to come to them 16 What his gospel is and the righteousness which it sheweth 18 God is angry with all manner of sin 21 What were the sins of the Gentiles PAul a servant of Jesus Christ called to be an apostle * Act. 13.2 separated unto the gospel of God 2 Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures 3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh 4 And †Or. determined declared to be the Son of God with power according to the spirit of holiness by the resurrection from the dead 5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship ‖ Or to the obedience of faith for obedience to the faith among all nations for his name 6 Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ 7 To all that be in Rome beloved of God called to be saints Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ 8 First I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world 9 For God is my witness whom I serve ‖ Or in my spirit with my spirit in the Gospel of his Son that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers
them that perish 16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death to the other the savour of life unto life and who is sufficient for these things 17 For we are not as many which ‖ Or deal deceitfully with * Chap. 4.2 corrupt the word of God but as of sincerity but as of God in the sight of God speak we in Christ CHAP. III. 1 Lest their false teachers should charge him with vain-glory he sheweth the faith and graces of the Corinthians to be a sufficient commendation of his ministery 6 Whereupon entring a comparison between the ministers of the law and of the gospel 12 he proveth that his ministery is so far the more excellent as the gospel of life and liberty is more glorious then the law of condemnation DO we begin again to commend our selves or need we as some others epistles of commendation to you or letters of commendation from you 2 Ye are our epistle written in our hearts known read of all men 3 For as much as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministred by us written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God not in tables of stone but in fleshly tables of the heart 4 And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward 5 Not that we are sufficient of our selves to think any thing as of our selves but our sufficiency is of God 6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament not of the letter but of the spirit for the letter killeth but the spirit ‖ Or quickneth giveth life 7 But if the ministration of death written and engraven in stones was glorious so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance which glory was to be done away 8 How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious 9 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory 10 For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect by reason of the glory that excelleth 11 For if that which is done away was glorious much more that which remaineth is glorious 12 Seeing then that we have such hope we use great ‖ Or boldness plainness of speech 13 And not as Moses * Exod. 34.33 which put a vail over his face that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished 14 But their mindes were blinded for until this day remaineth the same vail untâ—ken away in the reading of the old testament which vail is done away in Christ 15 But even unto this day when Moses is read the vail is upon their heart 16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord the vail shall be taken away 17 Now the Lord is that Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty 18 But we all with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord are changed into the same image from glory to glory even as ‖ Or of the Lord the Spirit by the Spirit of the Lord. CHAP. IV. 1 He declareth how he hath used all sincerity and faithful diligence in preaching the â—ospel 7 and how the troubles and persecutions which be daily endureth for the same did redound to the praise of Gods power 12 to the benefit of the church 16 and to the apostle's own eternal glory THerefore seeing we have this ministery as we have received mercy we faint not 2 But have renounced the hidden things of †Or. shâ—me dishonesty not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully but by manifestation of the truth commending our selves to every mans conscience in the sight of God 3 But if our gospel be hid it is hid to them that are lost 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which beleeve not lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ who is the image of God should shine unto them 5 For we preach not our selves but Christ Jesus the Lord and our selves your servants for Jesus sake 6 For God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness hath shined in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ 7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels that the excellency of the power may be of God and not of us 8 We are troubled on every side yet not distressed we are perplexed but ‖ Or not altogether without help or means not in despair 9 Persecuted but not forsaken cast down but not destroyed 10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body 11 For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus sake that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh 12 So then death worketh in us but life in you 13 We having the same spirit of faith according as it is written * Psal 11â— 10 I beleeved and therefore have I spoken we also beleeve and therefore speak 14 Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus and shall present us with you 15 For all things are for your sakes that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God 16 For which cause we faint not but though our outward man perish yet the inward man is renewed day by day 17 For our light affliction which is but for a moment worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory 18 While we look not at the things which are seen but at the things which are not seen for the things which are seen are temporal but the things which are not seen are eternal CHAP. V. 1 That in his assured hope of immortal glory 9 and in expâ—ctance of it and of the general judgement he laboureth to keep a good conscirence 12 not that he may herein boast of himself 14 but as one that having received life from Christ endeavoureth to live as a new creature to Christ onely 18 and by his ministery of reconciliation to reconcile others also in Christ to God FOr we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved we have a building of God an house not made with hands eternal in the heavens 2 For in this we groan earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven 3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked 4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan being burdened not for that we would be unclothed but clothed upon that mortality might be swallowed up of life 5 Now he that hath wrought us for the self same thing is God who also hath given unto us the earnest of
tabernacle which is called the holiest of all 4 Which had the golden censer and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold wherein was * Ex. 16.34 the golden pot that had manna and * Num. 17.16 Aâ—rons rod that budded and * Deut. 10.5 1 King 8.9 〈◊〉 Chr. 5.10 the tables of the covenant 5 And * Ex. 25.22 over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercy-seat of which we cannot now speak particularly 6 Now when these things were thus ordained the priests went always into the first tabernacle accomplishing the service of God 7 But into the second went the high priest alone * Ex. 30.10 â—ev 16. 〈◊〉 once every year not without bloud which he offered for himself and for the errours of the people 8 The holy Ghost this signifying that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest while as the first tabernacle was yet standing 9 Which was a sigure for the time then present in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices that could not make him that did the service perfect as pertaining to the conscience 10 Which stood onely in meats and drinks and divers washings and carnal ‖ Or vitor ceremonies ordinances imposed on them until the time of reformation 11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come by a greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands that is to say not of this building 12 Neither by the bloud of goats and calves but by his own bloud he entred in once into the holy place having obtained eternal redemption fâ—r us 13 For it * Lev. 1â— 14 the bloud of bulls and of goats and * 1 Num. 19.17 c. the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh 14 How much more shall the bloud of Christ who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without ‖ Or fault spot to God purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God 15 And for this cause he is the Mediatour of the new testament that by means of death for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance 16 For where a testament is there must also of necessity ‖ Or be brought in be the death of the testatour 17 For a testament is of force after men are dead otherwise it is of no strength at all whilest the testatour liveth 18 Whereupon neither the first testament was ‖ Or purified dedicated without bloud 19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law he took the bloud of calves and of goats with water and ‖ Or purple scarlet wooll and hyssop and sprinkled both the book and all the people 20 Saying * Eâ— 24.8 This is the bloud of the testament which God hath enjoyned unto you 21 Moreover he sprinkled likewise with bloud both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministery 22 And almost all things are by the law purged with bloud and without shedding of bloud is no remission 23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices then these 24 For Christ is not entred into the holy places made with hands which are the figures of the true but into heaven it self now * 1 Joh. 2.1 to appear in the presence of God for us 25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often as the high priest entreth into the holy place every year with bloud of others 26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself 27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die but after this the judgement 28 So * 1 Pet. 3.18 Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation CHAP. X. 1 The weakness of the law-sacrifices 10 The sacrifice of Christs body once offered 14 for ever hath taken away sins 19 An exhortation to hold fast the faith with patience and thanksgiving FOr the law having a shadow of good things to come and not the very image of the things can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins 3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year 4 For it is not possible that the bloud of bulls and of goats should take away sins 5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world he saith * Psal 10.6 c. Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not but a body ‖ Or thou â—â—st fitted me hast thou prepared me 6 In burnt-offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure 7 Then said I Lo I come In the volume of the book it is written of me to do thy will O God 8 Above when he said Sacrifice and offering and barnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not neither hadst pleasure therein which are offered by the law 9 Then said he Lo I come to do thy will O God He taketh away the first that he may establish the second 10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all 11 And every priest standeth daily ministring and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices which can never take away sins 12 But this man after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever sat down on the right hand of God 13 From henceforth expecting * Psal 11â— 1. 1 Cor. 15.25 Chap. 1.13 till his enemies be made his footstool 14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified 15 Whereof the holy Ghost also is a witness to us for after that he had said before 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days saith the Lord I will * Jer. 31.33 put my laws into their hearts and in their minds will I write them 17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more 18 Now where remission of these is there is no more offering for sin 19 Having therefore brethren ‖ Or liberty boldness to enter into the holiest by the bloud of Jesus 20 By a new and living way which he hath ‖ Or new mâ—dâ— consecrated for us through the vail that is to say his flesh 21 And having an high priest over the house of God 22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and

IX 1 Jeremiah lamenteth the Jews for their manifold sins 9 and for their judgement 12 Disobedience is the cause of their bitter calamity 17 He exhorteth to mourn for their destruct on 22 and to trust not in themselves but in God 25 He threatneth both Jews and Gentiles †Heb. Who will give my head c. Take ye heed every one of his ‖ Or friend neighbour and trust ye not in any brother for every brother will utterly supplant and every neighbour will walk with slanders 5 And they will ‖ Or mock deceive every one his neighbour and will not speak the truth they have taught their tongue to speak lies and weary themselves to commit iniquity 6 Thine habitation is in the midst of deceit through deceit they refuse to know me saith the LORD 7 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts Behold I will melt them and try them for how shall I do for the daughter of my people 8 Their tongue is as an arrow shot out it speaketh * Psal 12.2 120.3 deceit one speaketh * Psal 28.3 peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth but †Heb. in the midst of him in heart he layeth ‖ Or wait for him his wait 9 ¶ * Chap. 5.9 29. Shall I not visit them for these things saith the LORD shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this 10 For the mountains will I take up a weeping and wailing and for the ‖ Or pastures habitations of the wilderness a lamentation because they are ‖ Or desolate burnt up so that none can pass through them neither can men hear the voice of the cattel †Heb. from the fowl even to c. both the fowl of the heavens and the breast are fled they are gone 11 And I will make Jerusalem heaps and * Chap. 10.22 a den of dragons and I will make the cities of Judah †Heb. desolation desolate without an inhabitant 12 ¶ Who is the wise man that may understand this and who is be to whom the mouth of the LORD hath spoken that he may declare it for what the land perisheth and is burnt up like a wilderness that none passeth through 13 And the LORD saith Because they have forsaken my law which I set before them and have not obeyed my voice neither walked therein 14 But have walked after the ‖ Or stubbornness imagination of their own heart and after Baalim which their fathers taught them 15 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Behold I will feed them even this people * Chap. 8.14 23.15 with wormwood and give them water of gall to drink 16 I will * Levit. 26.33 scatter them also among the heathen whom neither they nor their fathers have known and I will send a sword after them till I have consumed them 17 ¶ Thus saith the LORD of hosts Consider ye and call for the mourning-women that they may come and send for cunning women that they may come 18 And let them make haste and take up a wailing for us that our eyes may run down with tears and our eye-lids gush out with waters 19 For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion How are we spoiled we are greatly confounded because we have forsaken the land because our dwellings have cast us out 20 Yet hear the word of the LORD O ye women and let your ear receive the word of his mouth and teach your daughters wailing and every one her neighbour lamentation 21 For death is come up into our
windows and is entred into our palaces to cut off the children from without and the young men from the streets 22 Speak Thus saith the LORD Ever the carcases of men shall fall as dung upon the open field and as the handful after the harvest-man and none shall gather them 23 ¶ Thus saith the LORD Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom neither let the mighty man glory in his might let not the rich man glory in his riches 24 But * 1 Cor. 1.21 2 Cor. 10.17 let him that glorieth glory in this that he understandeth and knoweth me that I am the LORD which exercise loving kindness judgement and righteousness in the earth for in these things I delight saith the LORD 25 ¶ Behold the days come saith the LORD that I will †Heb. visit upon punish all them which are circumcised with the uncircumcised 26 Egypt and Judah and Edom and the children of Ammon and Moab and all that are †Heb. cut off into corners or having the corners of their hair polled in the * Chap. 25.23 utmost corners that dwell in the wilderness for all these nations are uncircumcised and all the house of Israel are * Rom. 2.28 29. uncircumcised in the heart CHAP. X. 1 The unequal comparison of God and idols 17 The prophet exhorteth to flee from the calamity to come 19 He lamenteth the spoil of the tabernacle by foolish pastours 23 He maketh an bumble supplication HEar ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you O house of Israel 2 Thus saith the LORD Learn not the way of the heathen and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven for the heathen are dismayed at them 3 For the †Heb. statutes or ordinances are vanity customs of the people are vain for one cutteth a tree out of the forest the work of the hands of the workman with the ax 4 They deck it with silver and with gold they fasten it with nails and with hammers that it move not 5 They are upright as the palm-tree * Ps 15.5 but speak not they must needs be * Isa 45.1 7. born because they cannot go be not afraid of them for * Isa 41.13 they cannot do evil neither also is it in them to do good 6 Forasmuch as there is none * Psal 86.1 10. like unto thee O LORD thou art great and thy name is great in might 7 * Rev. 15.4 Who would not fear thee O king of nations for ‖ Or it liketh thee to thee doth it appertain forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations and in all their kingdoms there is none like unto thee 8 But they are †Heb. in one or at once altogether * Isa 41 2â— Hab. 2.18 Zec. 10.2 brutish and foolish the stock is a doctrine of vanities 9 Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz the work of the work man and of the hands of the founder blue and purple is their clothing they are all the work of cunning men 10 But the LORD is the †Heb.
