XCI Conteyning a short discourse of the Eclipse of the Moone and of the quarters of the yeere with other necessarie Rules for the better vnderstanding of the Almanacke going before wherin are Rules for the finding the planetarie hower very easely and pleasantly as also the rising and setting of the Sunne any day throughout the yeere referred with the other to the same Meridian By I. L. agree with one voyce that CHRIST our sauiour was conceyued at the Sunnes entraunce into Aries and borne vpon the shortest day when the Sunne entred into Capricorne wherefore to set Christmas vpon the shortest day and draw the Kalender backe in proportion thereunto me thought was very expedient and the rather because of all in generall a reformation long tyme hath been desired and a fruition of the Feastes vpon their ancient times For consideryng that the immoueable Feastes ought to keepe the same dayes they vsed to do in euery Moneth before it of necessitie followeth that they must be kept at other tymes in respect of the motions of the Sunne then for many yeeres they haue done As for Easter and the moueable Feastes which folowe the course of the Moone they were by Constant. magnus once corrected but ignorance of obseruation in continuance of tyme hath bred great errour sithens in so much as many yeeres they misse their due tymes a moneth at least and therefore of late haue had a seconde Reformation which although it be very truely performed for Easter and it append●nces yet the Monethes not reuocated to the true degrees of the Sunne deserued a new annimaduersion And therefore friende P. L. I haue not attempted this as a newe fangle and louer of ●ouelties the which I haue alwayes hated but as a furtherer of the trueth which I alway haue loued Vale et mecum fruere 4. To the Reader IT was my chaunce curteous Reader this last Lent to be in company of dyuers as well Worshipfull as Learned amongst whom vpon occasion of talke geuen grew sundry argumentes about the true keeping of Ea●ter and therevpon as vpon an adiunct and thing appendant 〈…〉 about the reformyng of the 〈◊〉 some maynteyning the old some the Romish Kalender corrected by Gregorie and some impugning them both as not brought to their due and ancient Periodes Which Conference bad awhyle pro et con and apparent manifestation of the trueth shewed for a thirde correction to be required the conclusion was an intreatie of me who had borne a part amongst them that at my conuenient leasure I woulde attempt the same agaynst the next yeere consideryng that of this yeere then was welnigh a quarter spent which motion made by suche as I coulde not well denie and partly that the trueth myght appeare I willingly haue attempted Beholde therefore a thyrde correction both true and exacte wherein as in the last none of the immoueable Feastes are altered from their dayes of the monethes they were placed in the olde Kalender So Easter is appoynted to the next Sunday followyng the first full Moone after the Sunnes entraunce into Aries and the moueable Feastes in proportion to it and euery expect satisfied The which with all other happines I wysh thee hartely to enioy Vale. 24. Aprilis 1590. Elections IT is good to Purge the Moone being in the watri trigon vz. in Cancer Scorpio or Pisces In Cancer by Electuaries in Scorpio by Potions in Pisces by Pilles And yf neede be in Libra and Aquarius which are indifferent for any Purging medicine The tymes of the yeere fittest are the Spring and Haruest the worst Sommer and Winter the one for it exceding colde the other for excessiue heate For letting of Blood There are two tymes the one of necessitie the other by election The fyrst is to be vsed out of hand or els great peryll of death may ensue to the partie as in the Plurisies and Squinansies The latter is to be chosen after the motion of the Moone through the .xii. signes in this sort Let the Phlegmatike be let blood the Moone being in Aries except in the head Let the Phlegmatike be let blood the Moone being in Sagittari except in the thighes and hippes Let the Melancholik be let blood the Moone being in Libra in the first 15 degrees except in the buttockes Let the Melancholik be let blood the Moone being in Aquarius except in the legges Let the Chollerike be let blood the Moone being in Cancer except in the brest Let the Chollerike be let blood the Moone being in Scorpio except in the priuities Let the Chollerike be let blood the Moone being in Pisces except in the feete The Sanguine in any of these Minution is prohibited in Leo for that it is the house of the Sunne who is alwayes repugnant to the Moone in nature Also it is prohibited in Gemini for that commonly the minution is by some Ueines in the armes and handes and no man ought to touche that member with Iron which the Moone then gouerneth Furthermore it is good from the change to the fyrst quarter for youth from the fyrst quarter to the full for youth and m●ddle age from the
full to the last quarter for myddle age and olde age from the last quarter to the change for olde age only according to the verse Luna vetus veteres iuuenes noualuna requirit The Moone in age the ancient sort Their veynes may open best The younger sort tyll Moone be newe Must let their veynes haue rest Last the age of the partie to be let blood is much to be considered for none before .xiiii. or after .lxx. yeeres ought to be let blood the first for slendernes of the veynes the later for debilitie of nature vnles the olde men be fleshy full of blood and strong For Bathing The Moone in Libra or Pisces for clenlynes The Moone in Aries Leo or Sagittarius for grosse bodyes The Moone in Cancer Scorpio or Pisces for dry bodyes For sweatyng vse the same consideration which is in bathing Cut heare the Moone in Libra Sagittarius Aquarius or Pisces and in the encrease Sow S●edes which you woulde haue to yeelde fruite the same yeere the Moone being in moueable signes as Aries Cancer Libra or Capricorne it wyll be best when she is in Virgo Capricorne or Cancer if she be increasing in number The like is to be sayd of Pisces But to plant Trees for continuance let it be whylest she is in Taurus Leo or Aquarius Fell Tymber from S. Barnabies day in Iune tyll the first Kalendes of Ianuarie in the wane of the Moone Fell fire wood that the stocke may soone spring from the change to the first quarter To remooue Graffes or young Trees at the last quarter of the Moone Good to gelde or libbe Cattle in Sagittarius Capricornus or Pisces the Moone encreasing Of the Eclipse of the Moone THe Moone this yeere shal be Eclipsed the .xx. day of December at .iii. of the clocke in the morning and almost a quarter she being then in her proper mantion Cancer almost corporally conioyned with the malignant planet Saturne and within two degrees of her Dragons head in the seconde house the house of substaunce and riches which what it may presage I leaue it to others to discusse My meanyng is not to vse long and tedious discoursing in a matter not very necessary and familiar to euery one consideryng the yeerely passions which happen to these great lyghtes and therefore with prayer to God to auert the euyll threatned thereby I cease for this poynt The beginning of the foure Quarters of this yeere And fyrst of the Spring The Spring taketh his commencement and beginning the .xi. day of March at two of the clocke .l. minutes after noone at such tyme as the Sunne entreth into the first scruple of Aries making the day and nyght then equall and the aeqinoctium vernum whereby I gather that the yeere is lyke to proue indifferent fruiteful and temperate neither subiect to many stormes nor shewers neyther hindered by too exceeding drought so that there is no want penurie or scarcitie by Gods permission to be feared Of the Sommer THe Sommer beginneth the .xii. day of Iune at .xi. of the clocke and .xxxviii. scruples in the forenoone when the Sunne entreth into the fyrst minute of Cancer making his solstitium estiuum longest day and returneth againe Southward from whence he came This season wyll proue something remisse in heate Of the Autumne THe Autumne commenceth the .xiii. day of September at .xi. of the clocke .xiii. minutes at nyght the Sunne entring the first scruple of Libra the aequinoctiall signe and now hastning towarde the Winter tropicke describeth an equalitie betwixt nyght and day This quarter wyll proue something colder then the nature thereof requireth and more moyst then vsuall The Winter WInter beginneth the .xii. day of December this yeere at iiii of the clocke .xiv. minutes after noone at the Sunnes first touching of the first scruple of Capricorne his solltitium brumale and winter Tropicke making the shortest day and longest nyght and endeth at the Sunnes entrance into Aries next folowyng This quarter wylbe very colde and kindly To know Sunne rising and setting TUrne to the day of the moneth you desire to know and if it be the .i. the v.x.xv.xx.xxv or .xxx. you may from your day looke towardes your right hand in a right line and so vnder their titles finde them but yf it be none of these dayes then you must note what the difference is in minutes betweene the next day which is precisely put downe before your day and also the next so set downe which foloweth and thereof take such part or from your day abate such part as the dayes encrease or decrease proportionally wherein yf you borrow or reiect a minute or two to make euen your accompt it forceth not greatly As for example I desire to know the Sunnes rysing and setting the .iii. of Ianuarie agaynst which day I finde no numbers at all wherfore according to my rule I must looke for some day precedent noted as here the first is and lykewyse for some day followyng as is the .v. which done I seeke the difference and fynde it .iiii. and that I must vse proportionall substraction for that the numbers decrease and therefore I say yf the first day the Sunne rise at viii of the clocke and .iiii. minutes that the .ii. it shal rise at .viii. and .iii. min. and the .iii. at .viii. and .ii. minutes and so my demande satisfied Here you see that euery day looseth iust one minute and that the difference falleth out meete with the dayes notwithstandyng that it had beene a minute more or lesse as for example .iii. or .v. you might haue accompted .iii. or v.iiii at your pleasure without any great errour and so haue made the difference match to the number of dayes To finde the planetarie or artificiall houre vpon the day SEe how many howers your houre of the clocke is from Sunrysing and multiplie these houres by .60 and diuide them by the quantitie of your artificiall hower agreeable to the day and the quotient sheweth how many artificiall howers and minutes of an other artificiall hower if there be any annexed be past wherefore adde one to the number of howers found that is the hower required Example I would know the first of Ianuarie what Planet reigned at .iii. of the clocke in the after noone I therefore abate .viii. of the clocke iiii minutes which is the Sunne ryse from .xv. howers .0 min for so is iii. of the clocke to be reckoned that is to say the after noone howers are to be added to x●i and then Sunrysing to be abated and so there remayneth .vi howers .lvi. which are vi houres .lvi. minutes Now the howers brought to minutes by multiplication of .60 are 360. vnto which adde .56 the minutes which are besides your howers and so wyll the Sunne amount to .416 which diuided by .39 minutes and .20 secondes for so you must vnderstande the quantitie of the artificiall hower to be set downe in min. and secondes yeeldeth the tenth hower whereby you may conclude that the tenth Planet that is to say ☽ by course reckoned from the planet of the day is the planet which then hath finished his course and that the planet that is next in order folowyng hath begunne his course and then reigneth for that hower and ●yme Adde therfore one vnitie to your number .10 found and enter the table folowyng and so shall you finde Saturne reigning If you finde in the quotient howers and minutes they shewe so many howers past and so many minutes more of another artificiall hower next folowyng yea of that hower which your vnitie added and the rest altogeather sheweth Note as often as you cannot diuide your distance brought into minutes by the planetarie hower reduced to secondes you must multiple it agayne by .60 and so bryng it into secondes as in the last example is done Furthermore yf your day proposed haue neyther numbers of Sunne rising nor quantitie of planetarie hower you must do for both as you were taught to do for the Sunne rising and then proceede with your rule last rehearsed The Table seruing to finde the planetarie hower vpon the day where the first colume conteyning the figures 1. 2. 3. 4. and so to .12 standeth for the number of howers the next colume for Sunday the thyrde for Munday c. To know the planetarie hower for the nyght ABate the quantite of your planetarie hower of that day from 120. minutes and the remayne sheweth the quantitie of the artificiall hower for the nyght which founde proceede as for the day adding your howers after midnight to .12 and so taking your distaunce betweene Sunne sette and your howers by abatyng the hower and minute of sunne sette from your tyme proposed coun●yng sunne sette the beginning of the first planetarie hower for the nyght and so successiuely as this Table sheweth The Table for the nyght where the lyke columes are referred to the lyke dayes of the weeke as before To know at what hower of the clocke such a Planet reigneth BUt yf you desire to knowe at what hower of the clocke such a Planette beginneth his reigne then multiply the quantitie of the planetarie hower by one lesse then the number of the planetarie hower whether it be .1 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.7.8.9 10. 11. 12. or any number vnder .13 because there are but .12 howers for the day and so many for the nyght and diuide the product by 60. yf the diuidente be minuts or els by .3600 if secondes and the quotient sheweth your desire if any thing remaine they are minutes besides the howers of the clocke which howers and minutes founde in the quotient adde to sunryse yf it be for the day or to Sunset yf for the night and so haue you your purpose Example For the same day aboue rehearsed I woulde knowe when the .4 planet that is ♄ reigned Wherefore I multiplie .39 min. 20. secondes by .3 and diuide by .3600 and thereof commeth .2 howers of the clocke .20 minutes and .20 secondes which added to .8 howers and .4 minutes being sunryse bringeth .10 of the clocke .24 minutes and 20. secondes when the .4 Planet began his reigne FINIS
