it_o imply_v our_o first_o turn_v from_o sin_n to_o god_n be_v but_o the_o entrance_n upon_o or_o beginning_n of_o that_o course_n and_o how_o foolish_a be_v they_o that_o think_v to_o run_v their_o race_n in_o a_o instant_n to_o begin_v their_o course_n and_o finish_v it_o at_o once_o 2._o it_o be_v a_o reckon_n upon_o time_n which_o they_o can_v command_v man_n may_v with_o job_n chap._n 29.2_o wish_v that_o they_o be_v as_o in_o the_o month_n past_a but_o they_o can_v make_v themselves_o be_v so_o and_o so_o likewise_o they_o may_v wish_v time_n back_o but_o can_v bring_v it_o back_o or_o can_v be_v and_o that_o grace_n be_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n and_o if_o he_o do_v not_o give_v it_o man_n can_v have_v it_o and_o if_o he_o will_v not_o give_v it_o who_o can_v force_v he_o to_o do_v it_o they_o that_o will_v command_v god_n grace_n must_v command_v god_n himself_o and_o they_o that_o defer_v their_o repentance_n till_o they_o die_v must_v suppose_v either_o that_o they_o can_v work_v it_o in_o themselves_o which_o have_v already_o be_v disprove_v or_o that_o god_n will_v be_v at_o their_o beck_n to_o do_v it_o for_o they_o which_o need_v no_o disprove_v 4._o it_o be_v a_o think_v to_o do_v the_o work_v best_o when_o they_o have_v make_v it_o most_o difficult_a and_o painful_a though_o as_o be_v before_o say_v god_n can_v by_o his_o power_n in_o a_o instant_n remove_v all_o obstruction_n and_o work_v repentance_n in_o the_o most_o obdurate_a sinner_n yet_o in_o his_o ordinary_a method_n he_o work_v gradual_o and_o in_o the_o way_n of_o mean_n man_n attendance_n upon_o ordinance_n seek_v and_o labour_v after_o repentance_n etc._n etc._n and_o man_n have_v no_o reason_n to_o expect_v that_o god_n shall_v disuse_n his_o wont_a manner_n of_o work_v to_o gratify_v their_o sloth_n and_o loiter_v now_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o long_a man_n live_v in_o sin_n the_o more_o their_o heart_n will_v cleave_v to_o it_o and_o be_v harden_v in_o it_o and_o then_o the_o more_o loath_a they_o will_v be_v to_o be_v divorce_v from_o it_o and_o the_o more_o averse_a to_o the_o use_n of_o those_o mean_n whereby_o such_o a_o separation_n may_v be_v effect_v the_o more_o sweetness_n they_o have_v taste_v in_o sin_n the_o more_o bitter_a will_v the_o very_a thought_n of_o repentance_n be_v strong_a affection_n to_o their_o lust_n will_v make_v prayer_n cold_a and_o endeavour_n faint_v against_o they_o hence_o we_o see_v god_n handle_v old_a stubborn_a sinner_n more_o rough_o when_o he_o reduce_v they_o for_o the_o most_o part_n than_o other_o upon_o who_o he_o work_v more_o early_o indeed_o their_o case_n require_v it_o they_o need_v more_o of_o the_o lord_n terror_n 2_o cor._n 5.11_o to_o drive_v they_o off_o from_o sin_n more_o law-thunder_n to_o awaken_v their_o conscience_n and_o rouse_v they_o out_o of_o their_o security_n and_o more_o severe_a mean_n to_o humble_a and_o break_v they_o to_o embitter_v sin_n to_o they_o and_o make_v they_o hearty_o willing_a to_o forsake_v it_o what_o pang_n and_o torture_n horror_n of_o conscience_n soul-convulsion_n do_v foolish_a sinner_n procure_v to_o themselves_o by_o their_o linger_a and_o delay_v which_o have_v they_o be_v more_o quick_a and_o speedy_a in_o their_o work_n may_v have_v be_v prevent_v at_o least_o very_a much_o mitigate_v use_v two_o for_o exhortation_n let_v sinner_n take_v heed_n of_o defer_v their_o repentance_n at_o all_o much_o more_o of_o put_v it_o off_o to_o the_o end_n of_o their_o life_n consider_v 1._o can_v you_o have_v the_o face_n to_o put_v god_n off_o with_o the_o worst_a you_o can_v give_v he_o and_o the_o least_o too_o of_o your_o time_n and_o strength_n and_o service_n when_o he_o call_v for_o the_o best_a and_o deserve_v all_o have_v god_n give_v you_o a_o life_n of_o many_o year_n and_o can_v you_o afford_v he_o only_o the_o service_n of_o a_o few_o day_n it_o may_v be_v hour_n it_o may_v be_v minute_n nay_o it_o may_v be_v none_o at_o all_o be_v it_o fair_a ingenuous_a reasonable_a to_o give_v the_o devil_n your_o strength_n and_o god_n your_o weakness_n to_o give_v the_o devil_n and_o your_o lust_n your_o health_n and_o god_n your_o sickness_n to_o serve_v sin_n with_o your_o might_n and_o vigour_n and_o god_n with_o your_o distemper_n and_o infirmity_n not_o

exact_a rule_n of_o justice_n why_o else_o shall_v it_o be_v more_o tolerable_a for_o some_o sinner_n than_o other_o as_o grace_n and_o mercy_n will_v distribute_v the_o reward_n to_o the_o saint_n so_o justice_n punishment_n to_o the_o wicked_a so_o that_o nothing_o will_v be_v add_v above_o what_o be_v due_a and_o nothing_o abate_v of_o what_o be_v due_a not_o one_o stripe_n inflict_v nor_o one_o diminish_v of_o what_o justice_n shall_v determine_v by_o he_o action_n be_v weigh_v say_v hannah_n in_o her_o song_n 1_o sam._n 2.3_o bad_a action_n as_o well_o as_o good_a and_o the_o sodom_n or_o the_o sodomite_n and_o than_o it_o comprehend_v gomorrah_n which_o be_v often_o mention_v with_o it_o as_o isai_n 1.9_o matth._n 10.15_o etc._n etc._n and_o admah_n and_o zeboim_n and_o bela_n also_o may_v be_v mean_v by_o the_o land_n of_o sodom_n and_o the_o city_n of_o the_o plain_a gen._n 19.25_o and_o the_o other_o city_n be_v call_v capernaum_n which_o signify_v in_o hebrew_a a_o field_n of_o consolation_n or_o a_o pleasant_a field_n as_o sodom_n have_v its_o name_n from_o a_o word_n that_o denote_v secrecy_n or_o coetus_fw-la consultantium_fw-la gen._n 49.6_o but_o i_o shall_v not_o criticise_v upon_o name_n 2._o local_a sodom_n be_v on_o the_o east_n of_o canaan_n in_o the_o plain_a of_o jordan_n which_o lot_n choose_v at_o his_o part_n from_o abraham_n and_o he_o v._o 10._o but_o capernaum_n be_v on_o the_o north_n or_o northwest_n of_o the_o land_n of_o judah_n 3._o moral_a both_o be_v sinful_a city_n but_o their_o sin_n of_o a_o distinct_a kind_n the_o sin_n of_o sodom_n be_v sin_n against_o the_o law_n more_o direct_o and_o against_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n and_o of_o the_o high_a scandal_n but_o capernaum_n sin_n be_v more_o against_o the_o new_a light_n of_o the_o gospel_n break_v forth_o upon_o they_o from_o christ_n ministry_n and_o the_o mighty_a work_n whereby_o his_o doctrine_n be_v confirm_v among_o they_o now_o christ_n consider_v both_o these_o city_n and_o the_o sin_n of_o both_o gives_z the_o decision_n in_o the_o text_n that_o it_o will_v be_v more_o tolerable_a for_o the_o land_n of_o sodom_n than_o capernaum_n in_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n and_o may_v not_o this_o seem_v strange_a and_o amaze_a sodom_n be_v a_o city_n that_o be_v wicked_a to_o a_o prodigy_n and_o to_o a_o proverb_n it_o be_v say_v gen._n 13.13_o that_o the_o man_n of_o sodom_n be_v sinner_n and_o wicked_a before_o the_o lord_n exceed_o and_o impudence_n in_o sin_n be_v call_v a_o declare_v their_o sin_n like_o sodom_n isai_n 3.9_o and_o they_o be_v to_o i_o like_o sodom_n say_v god_n speak_v of_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o jew_n jer._n 23.14_o and_o wicked_a ruler_n be_v call_v ruler_n of_o sodom_n isai_n 1.10_o whereupon_o lot_n be_v above_o what_o sodom_n have_v have_v christ_n himself_o the_o son_n of_o god_n present_a preach_v and_o do_v many_o wonderful_a work_n in_o it_o which_o sodom_n never_o have_v many_o thing_n be_v record_v in_o the_o evangelist_n about_o this_o capernaum_n and_o its_o privilege_n above_o most_o city_n it_o be_v say_v that_o christ_n dwell_v here_o matth._n 4.13_o here_o he_o heal_v the_o centurion_n servant_n by_o a_o word_n from_o his_o mouth_n matth._n 8._o here_o he_o heal_v peter_n wife_n mother_n and_o many_o that_o be_v sick_a and_o possess_v of_o devil_n ibid._n and_o here_o he_o heal_v the_o paralytic_a man_n let_v down_o through_o the_o tile_n of_o the_o house_n mark_n 2.1_o 2_o 3_o etc._n etc._n and_o here_o he_o cast_v out_o the_o unclean_a spirit_n by_o a_o rebuke_n from_o his_o mouth_n mark_v 1.24_o here_o he_o wrought_v the_o miracle_n of_o the_o tribute-money_n take_v out_o of_o the_o mouth_n of_o a_o fish_n matth._n 17._o here_o he_o enter_v the_o synagogue_n propose_v we_o shall_v consider_v these_o two_o city_n as_o type_n and_o example_n of_o two_o sort_n of_o sinner_n for_o so_o it_o may_v be_v suppose_v our_o saviour_n intend_v they_o sodom_n as_o a_o type_n of_o the_o heathen_a and_o all_o that_o wickedness_n find_v among_o they_o who_o have_v not_o hear_v of_o christ_n and_o salvation_n by_o he_o and_o capernaum_n a_o type_n of_o those_o sinner_n who_o live_v under_o the_o gospel_n and_o have_v have_v christ_n preach_v to_o they_o and_o present_a among_o they_o by_o his_o word_n and_o ordinance_n and_o so_o i_o come_v to_o the_o last_o note_n which_o will_v full_o answer_v to_o the_o case_n propose_v that_o the_o worst_a of_o the_o heathen_a who_o never_o have_v christ_n preach_v to_o they_o note_v 6_o and_o salvation_n offer_v by_o he_o shall_v fare_v better_o in_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n than_o those_o that_o continue_v impenitent_a under_o the_o gospel_n a_o tremendous_a doctrine_n sodom_n be_v here_o instanced_a in_o by_o the_o most_o notorious_a sinner_n among_o all_o the_o heathen_n worse_o than_o tire_n and_o sidon_n before_o mention_v or_o any_o heathen_a city_n and_o yet_o shall_v fare_v better_o than_o capernaum_n though_o none_o of_o sodom_n sin_n be_v charge_v by_o our_o saviour_n upon_o it_o but_o they_o repent_v not_o under_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n and_o salvation_n because_o they_o repent_v not_o say_v the_o text_n this_o be_v their_o sin_n q._n but_o what_o be_v this_o impenitency_n under_o the_o gospel_n a._n 1._o it_o be_v not_o all_o hardness_n of_o heart_n that_o be_v impenitency_n repentance_n but_o his_o doctrine_n 2._o though_o we_o see_v not_o christ_n miracle_n wrought_v before_o our_o eye_n yet_o we_o hâ—â—e_v they_o record_v by_o the_o four_o evangelist_n and_o by_o such_o as_o be_v either_o eye-witness_n or_o write_v by_o a_o infallible_a spirit_n or_o rather_o both_o and_o if_o we_o believe_v the_o gospel_n we_o believe_v what_o be_v there_o record_v and_o faith_n be_v the_o evidence_n of_o thing_n not_o see_v and_o will_v make_v their_o impression_n upon_o the_o heart_n as_o if_o see_v with_o the_o eye_n 3._o of_o those_o many_o thousand_o both_o of_o jew_n and_o gentile_n that_o be_v bring_v to_o repentance_n by_o the_o gospel_n in_o the_o primitive_a time_n not_o one_o of_o a_o hundred_o or_o of_o a_o thousand_o do_v either_o see_v christ_n in_o the_o flesh_n hear_v he_o preach_v or_o see_v he_o work_v any_o miracle_n 4._o of_o those_o many_o thousand_o that_o do_v see_v he_o and_o his_o work_n and_o hear_v he_o preach_v when_o he_o be_v upon_o earth_n not_o one_o of_o a_o hundred_o be_v bring_v to_o repentance_n thereby_o vid._n john_n 12.37_o and_o be_v any_o sure_a in_o these_o day_n have_v they_o then_o live_v they_o shall_v not_o
