presbiterian_o in_o scotland_n he_o have_v meet_v with_o as_o little_a mercy_n from_o his_o brethren_n in_o ireland_n as_o the_o record_n of_o the_o diocese_n of_o connor_n can_v testify_v his_o three_o exception_n to_o these_o gentleman_n letter_n be_v to_o these_o word_n in_o it_o viz._n so_o far_o be_v they_o in_o scotland_n from_o exercise_v severity_n against_o man_n for_o be_v episcopal_a in_o their_o judgement_n that_o a_o great_a part_n of_o the_o minister_n of_o that_o kingdom_n who_o enjoy_v not_o only_o the_o protection_n of_o the_o government_n but_o the_o free_a their_o continuance_n in_o their_o parish_n than_o that_o they_o take_v the_o say_a oath_n of_o allegiance_n and_o assurance_n and_o that_o they_o behave_v themselves_o worthy_o in_o doctrine_n life_n and_o conversation_n as_o appear_v by_o the_o act_n of_o parliament_n past_o july_n 16._o 1695._o before_o the_o d._n can_v answer_v this_o he_o throw_v himself_o into_o a_o paraxism_n of_o astonishment_n at_o those_o who_o pretend_v to_o be_v more_o than_o ordinary_a strict_a and_o holy_a minister_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o the_o most_o faithful_a servant_n of_o the_o god_n of_o truth_n that_o they_o can_v allow_v themselves_o the_o liberty_n of_o wilful_o misrepresent_v the_o most_o notorious_a matter_n of_o fact_n and_o the_o plain_a state_n of_o public_a affair_n and_o flat_o contrary_a to_o truth_n and_o the_o mind_n of_o the_o writer_n of_o which_o he_o offer_v to_o prove_v the_o v._o scandalous_o guilty_a but_o have_v he_o right_o pitch_v on_o the_o guilty_a and_o as_o true_o confess_v his_o own_o fault_n as_o he_o false_o accuse_v the_o v._o he_o may_v have_v deserve_v compassion_n to_o cry_v out_o against_o those_o sin_n in_o other_o which_o we_o nourish_v in_o our_o own_o bosom_n be_v hypocrisy_n but_o in_o answer_n to_o these_o word_n he_o first_o concede_v a_o matter_n of_o fact_n viz._n that_o the_o episcopal_a clergy_n in_o scotland_n have_v enjoy_v the_o free_a exercise_n of_o their_o religion_n and_o quiet_a possession_n of_o their_o parish_n etc._n etc._n which_o indeed_o many_o in_o the_o north_n yet_o do_v but_o say_v he_o 1._o these_o instance_n be_v but_o seem_a favour_n 2._o they_o be_v produce_v as_o argument_n of_o the_o moderation_n of_o the_o presbyterian_a government_n whereas_o they_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o effect_n of_o the_o weakness_n of_o the_o party_n a._n if_o the_o protection_n of_o the_o government_n in_o the_o free_a and_o public_a exercise_n of_o religion_n with_o the_o legal_o same_o but_o 2._o he_o may_v have_v own_a they_o real_a favour_n have_v he_o consider_v on_o who_o they_o be_v confer_v even_o the_o abetter_n of_o viscount_n dundee_n rebellion_n for_o by_o his_o silence_n to_o the_o three_o paragraph_n of_o that_o letter_n viz._n that_o at_o the_o abetter_n of_o viscount_n dundee_n rebellion_n be_v or_o pretend_v to_o be_v of_o the_o episcopal_a persuasion_n as_o have_v also_o all_o those_o that_o have_v make_v any_o public_a commotion_n in_o that_o kingdom_n since_o this_o happy_a revolution_n he_o tacit_o confess_v the_o truth_n thereof_o but_o three_o that_o these_o favour_n be_v the_o effect_n only_o of_o the_o presbyterian_a party_n weakness_n will_v not_o be_v so_o easy_o believe_v by_o consider_v man_n for_o why_o shall_v the_o party_n be_v able_a to_o destroy_v the_o root_n the_o bishop_n and_o their_o prelacy_n and_o yet_o not_o be_v able_a to_o lop_n off_o the_o branch_n be_v improbable_a these_o sure_a who_o can_v extirpate_v prelacy_n in_o the_o north_n have_v power_n to_o drive_v out_o curacy_n there_o too_o but_o to_o make_v it_o evident_a that_o it_o be_v not_o the_o effect_n of_o weakness_n but_o their_o moderation_n they_o have_v now_o drive_v out_o all_o that_o rebellious_a brood_n who_o have_v contemn_v the_o king_n clemency_n and_o church_n moderation_n yet_o far_o have_v the_o church_n of_o that_o kingdom_n be_v weak_a the_o state_n be_v not_o but_o can_v easy_o extirpate_v they_o for_o he_o be_v mighty_o mistake_v of_o scotland_n if_o he_o think_v that_o many_o of_o that_o people_n will_v be_v martyr_n for_o prelacy_n that_o the_o episcopal_a party_n in_o the_o north_n be_v a_o formidable_a party_n and_o therefore_o keep_v it_o depend_v on_o the_o credit_n of_o his_o informer_n for_o be_v they_o such_o as_o he_o say_v they_o be_v neither_o stout_a nor_o kind_a in_o suffer_v their_o reverend_a father_n to_o be_v lay_v aside_o why_o may_v not_o the_o child_n who_o be_v able_a to_o secure_v themselves_o be_v so_o formidable_a be_v willing_a also_o to_o defend_v and_o continue_v their_o father_n yet_o his_o reason_n to_o prove_v they_o a_o formidable_a party_n viz._n that_o part_n of_o scotland_n on_o the_o north_n of_o tay_n be_v know_v to_o be_v little_o less_o than_o the_o half_a of_o the_o kingdom_n be_v not_o very_o formidable_a for_o if_o the_o highland_n and_o isle_n of_o scotland_n be_v comprehend_v in_o this_o his_o geography_n may_v hold_v good_a but_o his_o reason_n be_v lame_a for_o he_o will_v have_v little_a credit_n of_o many_o of_o the_o episcopal_a highlander_n who_o possess_v more_o land_n than_o religion_n and_o that_o the_o episcopal_a party_n there_o be_v eleven_o to_o one_o depend_v on_o the_o veracity_n of_o his_o informer_n who_o we_o see_v be_v no_o friend_n to_o his_o reputation_n and_o will_v at_o last_o cause_n he_o to_o turn_v bankrupt_a of_o it_o if_o he_o continue_v to_o give_v such_o left-handed_a news-monger_n such_o credit_n for_o deduce_v from_o the_o number_n papist_n the_o most_o of_o who_o be_v in_o the_o north_n he_o must_v abate_v of_o the_o proportion_n for_o in_o the_o shire_n of_o sutherland_n stranaver_n ross_n and_o murray_n there_o may_v be_v and_o have_v be_v a_o force_n which_o be_v a_o terror_n to_o its_o enemy_n raise_v to_o defend_v the_o settlement_n of_o state_n and_o church_n beside_o all_o this_o considerable_a number_n be_v in_o every_o part_n of_o that_o country_n and_o these_o as_o strict_a as_o any_o in_o scotland_n by_o which_o we_o see_v he_o be_v little_a acquaint_v with_o the_o state_n of_o that_o part_n of_o the_o kingdom_n these_o favour_n than_o werenot_v the_o effect_n of_o weakness_n but_o the_o genuine_a supple_a fruit_n of_o the_o clemency_n and_o moderation_n of_o that_o church_n which_o by_o long_a experience_n of_o the_o evil_a of_o oppression_n which_o be_v apt_a to_o make_v wise_a man_n mad_a be_v resolve_v upon_o it_o as_o the_o sure_a method_n to_o secure_v themselves_o and_o indeed_o their_o moderation_n be_v that_o which_o now_o be_v become_v most_o formidable_a to_o their_o wise_a enemy_n and_o the_o true_a cause_n why_o not_o the_o same_o moderation_n but_o distinct_a course_n be_v take_v with_o the_o episcopal_a clergy_n in_o the_o north_n and_o in_o the_o west_n be_v because_o the_o minister_n in_o the_o north_n be_v general_o man_n of_o better_a learning_n and_o life_n and_o less_o concern_v in_o these_o cruelty_n and_o oppression_n by_o which_o the_o west_n be_v harass_v and_o so_o have_v do_v less_o harm_n be_v more_o favour_v while_o those_o in_o the_o west_n meet_v with_o adonibezek_n reward_n now_o from_o all_o this_o let_v the_o reader_n judge_n if_o the_o d._n have_v just_a cause_n for_o his_o so_o rash_a judge_v the_o vindicator_n his_o 2._o reason_n to_o prove_v the_o v._o scandalous_o guilty_a of_o disingenuity_n and_o represent_v thing_n contrary_a to_o truth_n and_o his_o certain_a knowledge_n be_v that_o there_o be_v no_o act_n of_o parliament_n in_o favour_n of_o the_o episcopal_a clergy_n save_v that_o of_o july_n 16._o 1695._o and_o therefore_o leave_v it_o to_o the_o reader_n to_o judge_v what_o sort_n of_o usage_n
