holy_a duty_n that_o they_o may_v be_v strong_a to_o suffer_v affliction_n and_o to_o resist_v temptation_n therefore_o though_o god_n sometime_o in_o his_o wise_a dispensation_n suffer_v they_o to_o be_v hinder_v yet_o not_o withstand_v this_o be_v a_o thing_n that_o be_v both_o attainable_a and_o that_o they_o ought_v to_o labour_v for_o and_o never_o give_v their_o heart_n rest_n till_o they_o attain_v to_o it_o i_o say_v we_o ought_v to_o labour_v for_o it_o for_o the_o soul_n be_v never_o in_o such_o a_o frame_n as_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v but_o when_o it_o have_v get_v some_o assurance_n conscience_n spirit_n by_o conviction_n open_v to_o we_o what_o we_o be_v in_o ourselves_o he_o open_v our_o sin_n and_o the_o danger_n and_o soulnesse_n of_o our_o sin_n whereupon_o our_o conscience_n be_v terrify_v and_o affright_v therefore_o this_o good_a conscience_n whereby_o we_o be_v convince_v of_o our_o estate_n by_o nature_n in_o itself_o it_o be_v a_o good_a conscience_n pacify_v that_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o the_o apostle_n in_o the_o latter_a part_n of_o their_o epistle_n they_o press_v conscience_n of_o good_a duty_n when_o they_o have_v teach_v christian_n before_o and_o establish_v they_o in_o christ_n because_o all_o duty_n issue_v from_o faith_n if_o they_o come_v not_o thence_o they_o be_v nothing_o if_o there_o be_v first_o faith_n in_o christ_n he_o look_v if_o the_o conscience_n answer_n god_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o opposition_n and_o rebellion_n my_o flesh_n and_o blood_n say_v thus_o my_o sin_n be_v great_a and_o satan_n lay_v it_o hard_o to_o my_o charge_n yet_o trouble_n notwithstanding_o because_o god_n have_v promise_v and_o command_v i_o cast_v myself_o upon_o god_n let_v we_o ask_v our_o own_o heart_n and_o conscience_n measure_n our_o embrace_n be_v lovely_a and_o full_a of_o joy_n and_o delight_n therefore_o let_v we_o labour_n to_o grow_v in_o knowledge_n in_o supernatural_a spiritual_a knowledge_n and_o that_o our_o persuasion_n may_v be_v strong_a every_o day_n more_o and_o more_o for_o answerable_a to_o that_o our_o affection_n will_v grow_v and_o will_v be_v carry_v to_o the_o thing_n discover_v and_o and_o join_v with_o it_o a_o enquiry_n upon_o the_o soul_n be_v these_o thing_n so_o do_v i_o know_v these_o thing_n and_o be_o i_o persuade_v of_o these_o thing_n that_o they_o be_v so_o how_o be_v my_o disposition_n answerable_a then_o be_o i_o so_o affect_v as_o i_o shall_v be_v be_v my_o love_n so_o hot_a and_o my_o joy_n so_o work_v and_o spirit_o and_o quick_a as_o it_o shall_v or_o no_o and_o hereupon_o take_v occasion_n to_o stir_v up_o ourselves_o and_o to_o check_v our_o own_o soul_n alas_o that_o i_o shall_v have_v such_o thing_n discover_v and_o that_o i_o shall_v see_v such_o thing_n in_o such_o a_o strong_a persuasion_n in_o the_o book_n of_o god_n and_o profess_v myself_o to_o be_v persuade_v of_o these_o thing_n and_o yet_o be_v so_o dead_a at_o all_o time_n and_o if_o we_o find_v our_o affection_n any_o thing_n work_v that_o we_o be_v dispose_v to_o embrace_v these_o thing_n than_o we_o can_v but_o be_v in_o a_o excellent_a temper_n and_o bless_v god_n that_o have_v a_o thousand_o time_n more_o abundance_n than_o we_o have_v and_o that_o our_o soul_n that_o be_v more_o large_a and_o more_o excellent_a they_o be_v not_o make_v for_o these_o thing_n but_o for_o better_a and_o what_o use_n we_o shall_v have_v of_o better_a thing_n when_o these_o fail_n the_o soul_n be_v immortal_a and_o eternal_a this_o will_v make_v we_o let_v go_v earthly_a thing_n in_o our_o affection_n and_o hold_v they_o in_o their_o place_n in_o a_o secondary_a place_n as_o thing_n serviceable_a in_o the_o way_n to_o heaven_n and_o not_o to_o grasp_v they_o in_o our_o time_n he_o shall_v not_o be_v so_o affect_v with_o good_a thing_n though_o ordinary_o he_o comfort_v himself_o with_o the_o best_a thing_n and_o so_o he_o do_v afterward_o when_o he_o have_v give_v his_o grief_n and_o his_o present_a affection_n some_o liberty_n there_o be_v a_o love_n of_o intention_n &_o of_o value_v a_o man_n may_v be_v deceive_v that_o way_n a_o man_n value_v his_o child_n more_o than_o a_o strange_a that_o he_o entertain_v yet_o for_o the_o present_a he_o may_v give_v a_o stranger_n better_a look_n and_o better_a entertainment_n though_o he_o set_v moâ—…_n value_n on_o his_o child_n or_o his_o dear_a friend_n that_o 〈◊〉_d have_v secure_v himself_o of_o yet_o he_o will_v not_o show_v such_o countenance_n to_o they_o as_o to_o a_o stranger_n on_o the_o sudden_a so_o it_o be_v here_o god_n child_n their_o constant_a joy_n be_v in_o the_o best_a thing_n and_o they_o be_v judicious_o carry_v to_o the_o best_a thing_n but_o on_o the_o sudden_a there_o may_v be_v a_o entertain_n of_o some_o other_o thing_n and_o perhaps_o not_o unlawful_a neither_o perhaps_o it_o may_v be_v sinful_a to_o humble_a god_n child_n but_o that_o be_v but_o but_o on_o the_o sudden_a his_o course_n be_v to_o carry_v his_o affection_n above_o all_o earthly_a thing_n again_o in_o another_o case_n god_n child_n be_v deceive_v this_o way_n sometime_o for_o they_o think_v they_o have_v no_o affection_n when_o they_o have_v affection_n how_o be_v that_o see_v in_o case_n of_o opposition_n let_v god_n and_o christ_n and_o heavenly_a thing_n be_v oppose_v and_o you_o shall_v see_v then_o that_o they_o have_v affection_n those_o that_o for_o want_n of_o stir_v up_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o they_o or_o for_o want_v of_o good_a mean_n or_o by_o indisposition_n of_o body_n seem_v to_o be_v dull_a in_o their_o affection_n let_v religion_n be_v disgrace_v or_o oppose_v any_o way_n and_o you_o shall_v find_v then_o their_o affection_n deep_a in_o their_o heart_n to_o heavenly_a thing_n but_o they_o appear_v not_o before_o because_o there_o be_v no_o opposition_n these_o and_o such_o like_a thought_n we_o may_v have_v to_o content_v the_o soul_n that_o be_v and_o state_n and_o condition_n they_o be_v stranger_n and_o pilgrim_n the_o discovery_n of_o it_o they_o confess_v they_o be_v so_o and_o this_o confession_n be_v double_a their_o confession_n be_v either_o verbal_a as_o jacob_n confess_v when_o he_o come_v before_o pharaoh_n few_o and_o evil_a have_v the_o day_n of_o the_o life_n of_o my_o pilgrimage_n be_v say_v old_a jacob_n or_o it_o be_v say_v that_o such_o course_n do_v dead_a and_o dull_v they_o and_o make_v they_o forget_v religion_n that_o such_o company_n be_v not_o safe_a to_o keep_v i_o find_v myself_o the_o worse_a by_o it_o why_o shall_v i_o venture_v upon_o any_o thing_n that_o may_v stop_v and_o hinder_v or_o cool_v and_o dead_a i_o in_o my_o way_n to_o heaven_n if_o a_o man_n be_v wise_a he_o will_v consider_v of_o thing_n as_o they_o help_v or_o hinder_v he_o to_o that_o as_o for_o sin_n whereof_o we_o be_v convict_v it_o be_v the_o apostle_n counsel_n heb._n 12._o he_o put_v it_o sin_n out_o of_o all_o question_n we_o must_v cast_v off_o all_o that_o burden_n that_o press_v down_o etc._n etc._n a_o traveller_n will_v not_o have_v a_o burden_n upon_o he_o the_o sin_n that_o hang_v so_o fast_o on_o we_o must_v labour_v to_o mortify_v to_o kill_v our_o lust_n and_o corruption_n more_o and_o more_o and_o never_o leave_v till_o we_o have_v cast_v they_o off_o these_o thing_n be_v undeniable_a i_o speak_v before_o of_o thing_n in_o themselves_o indifferent_a and_o to_o other_o man_n in_o different_a if_o they_o have_v a_o large_a measure_n of_o wisdom_n but_o for_o corruption_n and_o sin_n they_o fight_v against_o the_o soul_n they_o fasten_v we_o to_o the_o world_n therefore_o above_o all_o thing_n we_o must_v cast_v off_o they_o as_o saint_n peter_n say_v excellent_o in_o 1_o pet._n 2._o i_o beseech_v you_o brethren_n as_o pilgrim_n and_o 2._o stranger_n abstain_v from_o fleshly_a lust_n which_o fight_v against_o your_o soul_n insinuate_v that_o pilgrim_n and_o stranger_n shall_v altogether_o abstain_v from_o lust_n from_o the_o cherish_n of_o carnal_a lust_n for_o these_o fight_n against_o the_o soul_n they_o fight_v against_o the_o comfort_n of_o the_o soul_n against_o the_o we_o in_o particular_a yet_o with_o a_o secret_a conceal_n of_o it_o not_o to_o entangle_v the_o conscience_n of_o other_o man_n who_o perhaps_o may_v use_v those_o thing_n with_o less_o hindrance_n than_o we_o do_v a_o wise_a christian_a will_v be_v wary_a in_o that_o kind_n if_o he_o find_v the_o thing_n of_o the_o world_n to_o hinder_v he_o he_o will_v not_o have_v his_o heart_n eat_v up_o drive_v they_o homeward_o in_o all_o confusion_n in_o the_o world_n faith_n teach_v a_o man_n to_o stand_v as_o a_o man_n upon_o a_o rock_n immovable_a because_o he_o be_v a_o stranger_n if_o any_o
