there_o be_v of_o it_o how_o the_o trouble_a conscience_n of_o the_o godly_a differ_v from_o the_o trouble_a conscience_n of_o the_o wicked_a the_o misery_n of_o a_o trouble_a conscience_n and_o what_o a_o deal_n of_o mischief_n it_o do_v one_o especial_o in_o affliction_n now_o i_o shall_v leave_v this_o point_n but_o that_o there_o be_v sundry_a question_n to_o be_v answer_v about_o it_o i._o suppose_v a_o man_n be_v rid_v of_o this_o trouble_n and_o have_v peace_n of_o conscience_n how_o shall_v he_o maintain_v it_o and_o keep_v out_o trouble_v from_o it_o ii_o whether_o and_o how_o the_o peace_n of_o our_o conscience_n depend_v upon_o our_o care_n and_o obedience_n iii_o what_o manner_n of_o obedience_n it_o be_v that_o peace_n of_o conscience_n do_v depend_v on_o iv._o if_o a_o man_n have_v no_o peace_n but_o only_o a_o burden_a conscience_n what_o must_v such_o a_o man_n do_v to_o be_v free_v from_o it_o and_o to_o attein_v true_a peace_n i._o question_n how_o a_o man_n may_v keep_v peace_n of_o conscience_n i_o begin_v with_o the_o first_o suppose_v a_o man_n have_v peace_n of_o conscience_n what_o must_v he_o do_v to_o keep_v and_o maintain_v it_o i_o answer_v first_o we_o must_v labour_v to_o prevent_v trouble_n of_o conscience_n by_o take_v heed_n that_o we_o do_v nothing_o contrary_a to_o conscience_n we_o must_v not_o be_v draw_v by_o friendship_n or_o credit_n or_o the_o love_n of_o any_o lust_n to_o do_v that_o which_o conscience_n forbid_v nothing_o shall_v be_v so_o dear_a unto_o we_o as_o the_o peace_n of_o conscience_n nothing_o for_o the_o love_n of_o it_o shall_v make_v we_o do_v aught_o against_o our_o conscience_n how_o miserable_a be_v those_o comfort_n delight_n satisfaction_n which_o we_o get_v to_o ourselves_o in_o such_o course_n as_o our_o own_o heart_n do_v condemn_v however_o they_o seem_v comfort_n for_o a_o while_n and_o contentment_n for_o a_o while_n and_o delight_n for_o a_o while_n yet_o at_o last_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o miserable_a comfort_n be_v they_o all_o nothing_o that_o we_o get_v in_o any_o evil_a way_n will_v cheer_v and_o comfort_v we_o in_o a_o time_n of_o need_n what_o say_v francis_n spira_n at_o the_o time_n of_o his_o death_n when_o see_v his_o wife_n and_o child_n about_o he_o and_o think_v on_o the_o good_n and_o estate_n which_o he_o have_v get_v for_o they_o by_o deny_v the_o truth_n which_o he_o have_v before_o maintain_v against_o the_o romish_a error_n he_o cry_v out_o in_o the_o horror_n of_o his_o conscience_n how_o terrible_a be_v the_o sight_n of_o these_o unto_o i_o however_o before_o they_o have_v be_v comfort_n to_o he_o yet_o now_o he_o can_v not_o endure_v the_o sight_n of_o they_o o_o think_v he_o i_o recant_v for_o your_o sake_n i_o yield_v to_o superstition_n and_o it_o be_v long_o of_o you_o therefore_o he_o abhor_v now_o the_o sight_n oâ—_n they_o wretched_a be_v he_o that_o allow_v himself_o in_o any_o course_n which_o his_o conscience_n find_v fault_n with_o it_o be_v a_o good_a rule_n the_o apostle_n give_v 14.22_o bless_a be_v he_o that_o condemn_v not_o himself_o in_o that_o which_o he_o allow_v that_o be_v bless_a be_v he_o that_o have_v not_o a_o condemn_a conscience_n that_o allow_v not_o himself_o in_o any_o course_n wherein_o his_o conscience_n do_v condemn_v he_o so_o that_o if_o we_o have_v peace_n of_o conscience_n and_o desire_v to_o maintain_v it_o let_v we_o never_o allow_v ourselves_o in_o any_o course_n that_o our_o conscience_n may_v condemn_v we_o in_o that_o be_v the_o first_o answer_n second_o if_o we_o will_v maintain_v our_o peace_n 2_o we_o must_v labour_v to_o have_v our_o heart_n ground_v in_o the_o assurance_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n alas_o it_o will_v fail_v we_o else_o and_o leave_v we_o in_o trouble_n and_o perplexity_n in_o time_n of_o great_a need_n observe_v how_o the_o apostle_n join_v love_n and_o peace_n together_o 2._o cor._n 13.11_o the_o god_n of_o love_n and_o peace_n be_v with_o you_o if_o he_o be_v the_o god_n of_o love_n to_o we_o it_o be_v sure_a enough_o he_o will_v be_v the_o god_n of_o peace_n also_o if_o we_o know_v once_o that_o god_n love_v we_o than_o we_o may_v set_v our_o heart_n at_o rest_n as_o long_o as_o we_o doubt_v of_o his_o love_n our_o conscience_n can_v never_o have_v true_a peace_n and_o therefore_o if_o we_o will_v maintain_v true_a peace_n of_o conscience_n let_v we_o labour_n to_o be_v assure_v of_o god_n love_n three_o we_o must_v use_v the_o exercise_n of_o faith_n in_o apply_v the_o blood_n of_o christ_n 3._o we_o must_v labour_v to_o purge_v and_o cleanse_v our_o conscience_n with_o it_o if_o we_o find_v that_o we_o have_v sin_v we_o must_v run_v present_o to_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n to_o wash_v away_o our_o sin_n we_o must_v not_o let_v the_o wound_n fester_v or_o exulcerate_v but_o present_o get_v it_o heal_v as_o there_o be_v a_o fountain_n of_o sin_n in_o we_o so_o there_o be_v a_o fountain_n of_o mercy_n in_o christ_n set_v open_a for_o judah_n and_o jerusalem_n 13.1_o and_o for_o every_o poor_a soul_n to_o wash_v in_o as_o we_o sin_v daily_o so_o he_o justify_v daily_o and_o thing_n please_v to_o god_n without_o the_o which_o we_o displease_v god_n for_o though_o god_n be_v please_v with_o his_o child_n always_o in_o christ_n yet_o he_o be_v not_o please_v that_o any_o conscience_n will_v say_v it_o thus_o much_o shall_v suffice_v for_o answer_v to_o the_o second_o question_n iii_o question_n what_o manner_n of_o obedience_n it_o be_v that_o peace_n of_o all_o the_o duty_n we_o go_v about_o if_o our_o conscience_n can_v say_v thus_o how_o can_v any_o peace_n depend_v upon_o obedience_n what_o obedience_n do_v you_o mean_v that_o peace_n of_o conscience_n depend_v upon_o i_o answer_v 1._o absolute_a perfection_n in_o obedience_n be_v not_o require_v unto_o evangelical_a peace_n for_o if_o it_o be_v no_o man_n can_v have_v peace_n no_o not_o paul_n nor_o abraham_n nor_o any_o of_o the_o holy_a of_o god_n child_n and_o therefore_o absolute_a perfection_n be_v not_o require_v if_o we_o say_v we_o have_v not_o sin_v we_o make_v christ_n a_o liar_n and_o his_o word_n be_v not_o in_o we_o 1._o john_n 1.10_o our_o conscience_n can_v still_o say_v we_o have_v sin_v and_o it_o can_v still_o say_v our_o obedience_n be_v imperfect_a a_o halt_a leg_n can_v never_o go_v perfect_o a_o jacob_n be_v call_v he_o that_o halt_v and_o every_o godly_a soul_n halt_v though_o he_o do_v not_o halt_v between_o two_o as_o wicked_a people_n do_v yet_o he_o halt_v in_o follow_v after_o god_n what_o purblind_a eye_n can_v see_v perfect_o or_o thick_a ear_n hear_v perfect_o he_o that_o have_v these_o imperfection_n of_o body_n can_v neither_o go_v nor_o see_v nor_o hear_v perfect_o so_o the_o best_a of_o god_n child_n have_v imperfection_n of_o heart_n and_o spirit_n and_o mind_n their_o faith_n be_v imperfect_a their_o love_n be_v imperfect_a and_o therefore_o their_o obedience_n must_v needs_o be_v imperfect_a but_o absolute_a perfection_n be_v not_o require_v to_o true_a peace_n of_o conscience_n and_o therefore_o this_o do_v not_o hinder_v it_o 2._o though_o absolute_a perfection_n be_v not_o require_v to_o peace_n yet_o such_o obedience_n be_v require_v as_o may_v be_v acceptable_a to_o god_n 5.9_o so_o say_v the_o apostle_n we_o labour_v that_o whether_o present_a or_o absent_a we_o may_v be_v accept_v of_o he_o such_o obedience_n we_o must_v show_v as_o may_v be_v accept_v of_o he_o or_o we_o can_v have_v true_a peace_n if_o our_o endeavour_n be_v not_o acceptable_a our_o conscience_n will_v quick_o hear_v of_o it_o and_o tell_v we_o so_o if_o we_o pray_v cold_o or_o hear_v unprofitable_o or_o live_v loose_o if_o we_o do_v not_o do_v that_o which_o be_v acceptable_a to_o god_n our_o conscience_n will_v soon_o complain_v nay_o though_o we_o do_v do_v the_o duty_n if_o we_o do_v not_o do_v they_o in_o a_o acceptable_a manner_n conscience_n will_v have_v matter_n against_o we_o still_o 3._o this_o acceptablenesse_n of_o obedience_n lie_v in_o this_o when_o our_o obedience_n be_v sincere_a universal_a and_o total_a and_o proceed_v from_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n jesus_n dwell_v in_o we_o the_o apostle_n give_v it_o this_o phrase_n when_o we_o walk_v not_o after_o the_o flesh_n but_o after_o the_o spirit_n rom._n 8.4_o that_o be_v our_o fulfil_n the_o law_n when_o christ_n have_v fulfil_v the_o law_n for_o we_o and_o make_v we_o sincere_o to_o walk_v by_o it_o not_o after_o the_o flesh_n but_o after_o the_o spirit_n when_o we_o do_v not_o favour_v ourselves_o in_o one_o lust_n nor_o suffer_v ourselves_o in_o any_o belove_a sin_n but_o whatever_o it_o be_v that_o be_v evil_a our_o conscience_n can_v say_v we_o true_o do_v hate_v it_o and_o labour_n to_o avoid_v it_o whatever_o it_o be_v that_o be_v command_v we_o be_v it_o never_o so_o contrary_a to_o our_o nature_n yet_o our_o conscience_n can_v say_v we_o sincere_o set_v ourselves_o to_o do_v it_o so_o walk_v not_o after_o the_o flesh_n but_o after_o the_o spirit_n this_o be_v sincerity_n of_o obedience_n and_o this_o be_v require_v unto_o peace_n 4._o this_o sincerity_n of_o obedience_n make_v we_o to_o bewail_v our_o very_a infirmity_n and_o to_o be_v humble_v for_o they_o not_o only_o to_o be_v humble_v for_o great_a sin_n but_o also_o to_o be_v humble_v for_o our_o infirmity_n if_o we_o be_v not_o sound_o humble_v for_o our_o very_a infirmity_n also_o they_o will_v hinder_v the_o peace_n of_o our_o conscience_n we_o can_v have_v no_o peace_n except_o our_o conscience_n can_v witness_v that_o our_o infirmity_n do_v humble_a we_o and_o drive_v we_o to_o christ_n and_o cause_n we_o to_o sue_v out_o a_o pardon_n if_o conscience_n have_v not_o a_o pardon_n seal_v for_o infirmity_n also_o it_o will_v not_o be_v at_o peace_n 17_o christ_n bear_v our_o very_a infirmity_n therefore_o we_o must_v be_v humble_v for_o they_o and_o go_v to_o he_o for_o pardon_n of_o they_o too_o or_o conscience_n will_v not_o be_v at_o peace_n thus_o i_o have_v answer_v also_o this_o daughter_n of_o my_o people_n slight_o say_v peace_n peace_n when_o there_o be_v no_o peace_n and_o so_o they_o do_v more_o hurt_n than_o good_a like_o a_o chirurgeon_n that_o skin_v the_o wound_n before_o he_o give_v search_v salve_n to_o kill_v the_o matter_n of_o it_o afterward_o it_o break_v out_o worse_o and_o it_o be_v a_o hundred_o to_o one_o but_o it_o will_v cost_v the_o patient_a his_o life_n so_o it_o be_v with_o many_o man_n a_o man_n can_v roar_v a_o little_a for_o his_o sin_n i_o have_v be_v a_o sinner_n and_o what_o shall_v i_o do_v i_o have_v be_v a_o beast_n etc._n sickness_n yea_o in_o death_n itself_o a_o good_a conscience_n than_o make_v we_o hold_v up_o our_o head_n when_o all_o the_o world_n shall_v be_v confound_v a_o good_a conscience_n will_v bear_v we_o who_o be_v thou_o that_o judge_v another_o that_o be_v there_o be_v but_o one_o supreme_a lawgiver_n to_o bind_v the_o conscience_n of_o man_n and_o that_o be_v god_n and_o the_o reason_n be_v give_v because_o it_o be_v god_n only_o who_o be_v able_a to_o save_v and_o to_o destroy_v as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v god_n only_o have_v power_n over_o life_n and_o death_n either_o to_o save_v a_o man_n for_o ever_o or_o destroy_v a_o man_n for_o ever_o and_o to_o judge_v a_o man_n according_a to_o all_o that_o he_o have_v do_v and_o therefore_o he_o only_o can_v make_v law_n to_o bind_v the_o conscience_n of_o man_n 2._o now_o the_o secondary_a or_o relative_a bond_n of_o conscience_n be_v when_z other_o who_o have_v authority_n from_o god_n bind_v conscience_n to_o this_o or_o that_o i_o call_v this_o a_o relative_a bond_n because_o it_o be_v only_o in_o relation_n to_o the_o authority_n of_o god_n for_o though_o man_n can_v challenge_v any_o do_n or_o omission_n contrary_a to_o their_o law_n to_o be_v sin_n yet_o if_o they_o have_v authority_n from_o god_n to_o command_v any_o thing_n than_o they_o become_v beam_n and_o part_n of_o god_n law_n and_o do_v by_o virtue_n of_o that_o bind_v a_o man_n conscience_n this_o relative_a bond_n of_o conscience_n be_v twofold_a first_o other_o man_n may_v bind_v our_o conscience_n as_o magistrate_n and_o master_n and_o parent_n who_o though_o they_o can_v bind_v conscience_n as_o they_o be_v man_n yet_o when_o they_o have_v authority_n from_o god_n their_o command_n have_v god_n seal_n upon_o they_o and_o do_v bind_v i_o say_v in_o relation_n to_o god_n law_n which_o bid_v we_o obey_v they_o rom._n 13.5_o you_o must_v needs_o be_v subject_n not_o only_o for_o wrath_n but_o also_o for_o conscience_n sake_n the_o
