be_v give_v and_o this_o may_v serve_v for_o answer_v unto_o this_o five_o question_n we_o come_v now_o unto_o a_o six_o question_n quest_n 6_o if_o the_o lord_n do_v give_v himself_o first_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o his_o grace_n this_o may_v then_o be_v a_o doubt_n and_o a_o question_n in_o a_o christian_a soul_n if_o god_n give_v himself_o before_o any_o blessing_n before_o any_o promise_n in_o order_n of_o nature_n though_o he_o give_v himself_o always_o in_o a_o promise_n or_o in_o a_o word_n that_o be_v equivalent_a to_o a_o promise_n as_o cant._n 5.9_o 16._o ch_z 6.1_o if_o we_o can_v claim_v any_o blessing_n from_o god_n at_o the_o first_o in_o any_o conditional_a promise_n therefore_o not_o by_o any_o condition_n in_o ourselves_o but_o as_o we_o receive_v all_o thing_n let_v we_o consider_v therefore_o and_o inquire_v to_o what_o use_n serve_v the_o law_n of_o god_n if_o god_n give_v himself_o first_o unto_o his_o people_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o his_o grace_n though_o the_o lord_n give_v himself_o free_o to_o the_o soul_n answ_n and_o his_o son_n and_o all_o the_o blessing_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n without_o respect_n unto_o any_o work_n of_o the_o law_n yet_o the_o law_n be_v of_o special_a and_o notable_a use_n unto_o all_o the_o son_n of_o man_n both_o unto_o they_o which_o be_v not_o yet_o bring_v home_o unto_o god_n by_o convert_v grace_n and_o also_o to_o those_o that_o be_v regenerate_v in_o jesus_n christ_n the_o apostle_n paul_n do_v observe_v that_o the_o question_n will_v arise_v upon_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o heinousness_n of_o sin_n upon_o their_o conscience_n and_o to_o set_v home_o the_o burden_n of_o their_o sin_n unto_o their_o soul_n thereby_o to_o drive_v they_o to_o feel_v their_o great_a need_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n who_o otherwise_o they_o shall_v for_o ever_o have_v despise_v thus_o the_o apostle_n answer_v in_o the_o place_n forename_a the_o the_o news_n of_o jesus_n christ_n beautiful_a and_o glad_a tiding_n and_o of_o this_o use_n be_v the_o law_n unto_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n before_o they_o come_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n 2._o but_o of_o what_o use_n be_v the_o law_n unto_o other_o man_n answ_n first_o in_o regard_n of_o disobedience_n it_o be_v of_o use_n unto_o they_o and_o 2._o the_o obedience_n most_o deboist_a and_o profane_a wretch_n more_o humble_v and_o ready_a to_o hearken_v to_o the_o voice_n of_o christ_n and_o soon_o convince_v of_o the_o necessity_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n than_o those_o that_o be_v but_o moral_o righteous_a by_o the_o law_n rom._n 9.30_o 31_o 32._o the_o gentile_n which_o follow_v not_o after_o righteousness_n have_v attain_v to_o righteousness_n even_o the_o righteousness_n which_o be_v of_o faith_n but_o israel_n which_o follow_v after_o the_o law_n of_o righteousness_n have_v not_o attain_v to_o the_o law_n of_o righteousness_n wherefore_o because_o they_o seek_v it_o not_o by_o faith_n but_o as_o it_o be_v by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n and_o chap._n 10.31_o they_o be_v ignorant_a of_o god_n excuse_n that_o so_o disobey_v it_o again_o the_o obedience_n of_o it_o and_o comfort_n in_o that_o obedience_n do_v harden_v the_o heart_n of_o other_o from_o jesus_n christ_n but_o what_o say_v holy_a spirit_n to_o strengthen_v they_o in_o the_o obedience_n of_o it_o and_o his_o grace_n to_o save_v they_o from_o the_o curse_n of_o it_o then_o christian_n be_v to_o know_v that_o they_o be_v bind_v to_o keep_v the_o law_n they_o lie_v under_o the_o authority_n of_o it_o and_o dare_v not_o pluck_v their_o neck_n from_o under_o that_o yoke_n now_o there_o be_v two_o effect_n spring_v from_o the_o subjection_n of_o god_n people_n to_o the_o commandment_n of_o the_o law_n 1._o as_o they_o take_v themselves_o bind_v to_o the_o obedience_n of_o it_o so_o they_o believe_v and_o many_o time_n by_o the_o same_o spirit_n of_o god_n whereby_o they_o be_v help_v to_o obey_v the_o commandment_n they_o do_v see_v the_o lord_n gracious_a approbation_n of_o they_o in_o their_o poor_a and_o weak_a endeavour_n for_o the_o lord_n know_v the_o way_n of_o the_o righteous_a that_o be_v acknowledge_v and_o approve_v it_o psal_n 1.6_o when_o the_o lord_n by_o his_o spirit_n bow_v the_o heart_n of_o far_o as_o any_o of_o these_o lie_v in_o our_o sanctification_n we_o ought_v to_o see_v that_o it_o be_v sanctification_n in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o than_o it_o be_v sanctification_n in_o jesus_n christ_n when_o the_o lord_n give_v we_o to_o look_v unto_o the_o lord_n jesus_n in_o it_o and_o to_o it_o in_o he_o and_o as_o we_o look_v for_o our_o holiness_n to_o be_v perfect_a in_o jesus_n christ_n so_o we_o look_v for_o continual_a supply_n of_o it_o from_o he_o and_o this_o it_o be_v to_o make_v christ_n our_o sanctification_n when_o as_o whatsoever_o gift_n the_o lord_n give_v we_o we_o go_v not_o forth_o in_o the_o strength_n of_o it_o but_o in_o the_o strength_n of_o jesus_n christ_n there_o may_v be_v a_o change_n in_o the_o soul_n which_o may_v spring_v from_o a_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n and_o may_v captivate_v our_o conscience_n unto_o the_o law_n that_o may_v restrain_v we_o from_o sin_n and_o constrain_v we_o unto_o duty_n but_o such_o holiness_n spring_v not_o from_o union_n with_o jesus_n christ_n for_o there_o may_v be_v a_o conscience_n of_o duty_n without_o sense_n of_o our_o need_n of_o jesus_n christ_n as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o israelite_n at_o mount_n sinai_n deut._n 5.27_o go_v thou_o near_o say_v they_o to_o moses_n and_o hear_v all_o that_o the_o lord_n our_o god_n shall_v say_v and_o speak_v thou_o unto_o we_o all_o that_o the_o lord_n our_o god_n shall_v speak_v unto_o thou_o and_o we_o will_v hear_v it_o and_o do_v it_o they_o have_v well_o say_v all_o that_o they_o have_v speak_v say_v the_o lord_n o_o that_o there_o be_v a_o heart_n in_o they_o that_o they_o will_v fear_v i_o and_o so_o forth_o this_o i_o say_v therefore_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n to_o be_v attend_v unto_o as_o ever_o you_o will_v make_v a_o right_a use_n of_o your_o holiness_n see_v that_o it_o be_v such_o as_o flow_v from_o jesus_n christ_n &_o that_o there_o be_v not_o only_o a_o heart_n awe_v with_o the_o law_n but_o wait_v upon_o jesus_n christ_n to_o be_v all_o in_o all_o in_o we_o and_o to_o we_o so_o shall_v we_o neither_o neglect_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n in_o we_o nor_o christ_n and_o his_o spirit_n but_o shall_v give_v their_o due_a honour_n unto_o all_o of_o they_o together_o 2._o this_o may_v also_o teach_v all_o christian_n not_o to_o trust_v upon_o the_o gift_n of_o their_o holiness_n though_o they_o do_v spring_n from_o the_o holy_a gbost_n himself_o though_o they_o be_v such_o as_o be_v unchangeable_a though_o they_o spring_v from_o jesus_n christ_n and_o knit_v your_o soul_n in_o union_n with_o he_o yet_o trust_v not_o in_o the_o gift_n themselves_o the_o lord_n lay_v it_o down_o as_o the_o apostasy_n of_o israel_n ezek._n 16.14_o 15._o thy_o renown_n go_v forth_o among_o the_o heathen_a for_o thy_o beauty_n for_o it_o be_v perfect_a through_o my_o comeliness_n which_o i_o have_v put_v upon_o thou_o say_v the_o lord_n god_n but_o thou_o do_v trust_v in_o thy_o own_o beauty_n and_o play_v the_o harlot_n etc._n etc._n trust_v not_o therefore_o in_o any_o of_o these_o but_o let_v all_o our_o confidence_n be_v in_o jesus_n christ_n not_o in_o any_o of_o the_o gift_n of_o his_o spirit_n whatsoever_o for_o a_o little_a further_o open_v of_o it_o 1._o trust_v not_o in_o any_o gift_n that_o you_o have_v receive_v for_o the_o performance_n of_o any_o duty_n for_o it_o be_v not_o the_o strong_a christian_a that_o be_v able_a to_o put_v forth_o a_o good_a thought_n 2_o cor._n 3.5_o but_o our_o sufficiency_n be_v of_o god_n he_o that_o abide_v in_o i_o and_o i_o in_o he_o the_o same_o obey_v and_o to_o they_o that_o disobey_v death_n and_o the_o curse_n but_o a_o christian_n look_v not_o for_o life_n by_o his_o obedience_n and_o that_o be_v plain_a psal_n 143.2_o enter_v not_o into_o judgement_n with_o thy_o servant_n for_o in_o thy_o sight_n shall_v no_o flesh_n live_v be_v justify_v so_o rom._n 3.20_o by_o the_o deed_n of_o the_o law_n there_o shall_v no_o flesh_n be_v know_v himself_o to_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n than_o he_o do_v not_o fear_v condemnation_n from_o his_o disobedience_n notable_a to_o this_o purpose_n be_v the_o confidence_n of_o david_n psal_n 49.5_o where_o the_o prophet_n call_v upon_o all_o people_n in_o the_o world_n to_o take_v notice_n of_o it_o both_o man_n of_o high_a degree_n and_o man_n of_o low_a degree_n
