but_o in_o this_o point_n we_o differ_v from_o they_o so_o far_o as_o they_o differ_v from_o the_o truth_n which_o difference_n i_o conceive_v to_o be_v neither_o so_o great_a as_o some_o man_n nor_o yet_o so_o little_a as_o other_o some_o man_n will_v make_v it_o they_o teach_v that_o humane_a law_n especial_o the_o ecclesiastical_a bind_v the_o conscience_n of_o man_n not_o only_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o obedience_n but_o also_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o thing_n themselves_o command_v and_o that_o by_o their_o own_o direct_a immediate_a and_o proper_a virtue_n in_o which_o doctrine_n of_o they_o 3._o thing_n be_v to_o be_v mislike_v first_o that_o they_o give_v a_o pre-eminence_n to_o the_o ecclesiastical_a law_n above_o the_o secular_a in_o this_o power_n of_o bind_v we_o may_v see_v it_o in_o they_o and_o in_o these_o objector_n how_o man_n will_v run_v into_o extremity_n beyond_o all_o reason_n when_o they_o give_v themselves_o to_o be_v lead_v by_o corrupt_a respect_n as_o he_o say_v of_o himself_o and_o his_o fellow-philosopher_n 17._o scurror_n ego_fw-la ipse_fw-la mihi_fw-la populo_fw-la tu_fw-la so_o it_o be_v here_o they_o of_o rome_n carry_v with_o a_o wretched_a desire_n to_o exalt_v the_o papacy_n and_o indeed_o the_o whole_a clergy_n as_o much_o as_o they_o may_v and_o to_o avile_v the_o secular_a power_n as_o much_o as_o they_o dare_v they_o therefore_o ascribe_v this_o power_n over_o the_o conscience_n to_o the_o ecclesiastical_a law_n especial_o but_o do_v not_o show_v themselves_o all_o out_o so_o zealous_a for_o the_o secular_a we_o at_o home_n on_o the_o contrary_a out_o of_o a_o appetite_n they_o have_v to_o bring_v in_o a_o new_a platform_n of_o discipline_n into_o the_o church_n and_o for_o that_o purpose_n to_o present_v the_o establish_a government_n unto_o the_o eye_n and_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o people_n in_o as_o deform_v a_o shape_n as_o they_o can_v quarrel_v the_o ecclesiastical_a law_n especial_o for_o tyrannize_v over_o the_o consciscience_n but_o do_v not_o show_v themselves_o so_o much_o aggrieve_v at_o the_o secular_a whereas_o the_o very_a truth_n be_v whatsoever_o advantage_n the_o secular_a power_n may_v have_v above_o the_o ecclesiastical_a or_o the_o ecclesiastical_a above_o the_o secular_a in_o other_o respect_n yet_o as_o to_o the_o power_n of_o bind_v the_o conscience_n all_o humane_a law_n in_o general_n be_v of_o like_a reason_n and_o stand_v upon_o equal_a term_n it_o be_v to_o be_v mislike_v second_o in_o the_o romish_a doctrine_n that_o they_o subject_n the_o conscience_n to_o the_o thing_n themselves_o also_o and_o not_o only_o tie_v
it_o to_o the_o obedience_n whereby_o they_o assume_v unto_o themselves_o interpretatiuè_fw-la the_o power_n of_o alter_v the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n by_o remove_v of_o their_o indifferency_n and_o induce_v a_o necessity_n for_o so_o long_o as_o they_o remain_v indifferent_a it_o be_v certain_a they_o can_v bind_v and_o three_o and_o principal_o it_o be_v to_o be_v mislike_v in_o they_o conscience_n indeed_o to_o obedience_n but_o it_o be_v by_o consequent_a and_o by_o virtue_n of_o a_o former_a divine_a law_n command_v we_o in_o all_o lawful_a thing_n to_o obey_v the_o superior_a power_n but_o whether_o mediate_o or_o immediate_o may_v some_o say_v whether_o direct_o or_o by_o consequent_a whether_o by_o its_o own_o or_o by_o a_o borrow_a virtue_n what_o be_v it_o material_a to_o be_v argue_v so_o long_o as_o the_o same_o effect_n will_v follow_v and_o that_o as_o entire_o to_o all_o intent_n and_o purpose_n the_o one_o way_n as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o as_o if_o a_o debt_n be_v alike_o recoverable_a it_o skill_v not_o much_o whether_o it_o be_v due_a upon_o the_o original_a bond_n or_o upon_o a_o assignment_n if_o they_o may_v be_v sure_a to_o be_v obey_v the_o high_a power_n be_v satisfy_v let_v scholar_n wrangle_v about_o word_n and_o distinction_n so_o they_o have_v the_o thing_n it_o be_v all_o they_o look_v after_o this_o objection_n be_v in_o part_n true_a and_o for_o that_o reason_n the_o difference_n in_o this_o controversy_n be_v not_o altogether_o of_o so_o great_a consequence_n as_o they_o have_v seem_v to_o some_o yet_o they_o that_o think_v the_o difference_n either_o to_o be_v none_o at_o all_o or_o not_o of_o considerable_a moment_n judge_v not_o aright_o for_o albeit_o it_o be_v all_o one_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o governor_n whence_o the_o obligation_n of_o conscience_n spring_v so_o long_o as_o they_o be_v conscionable_o obey_v as_o be_v true_o allege_v yet_o unto_o inferior_n who_o be_v bind_v in_o conscience_n to_o yield_v obedience_n it_o be_v not_o all_o one_o but_o it_o much_o concern_v they_o to_o understand_v whence_o that_o obligation_n arise_v in_o respect_n of_o this_o very_a point_n whereof_o we_o now_o speak_v of_o christian_a liberty_n and_o for_o two_o weighty_a and_o important_a consideration_n for_o first_o if_o the_o obligation_n spring_n as_o they_o will_v have_v it_o from_o the_o constitution_n itself_o by_o the_o proper_a and_o immediate_a virtue_n thereof_o then_o the_o conscience_n of_o the_o subject_n be_v tie_v to_o obey_v the_o constitution_n in_o the_o rigour_n of_o where_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v free_a but_o if_o on_o the_o other_o side_n which_o be_v the_o truth_n the_o constitution_n of_o the_o magistrate_n bind_v the_o conscience_n of_o the_o subject_n not_o immediate_o and_o by_o its_o own_o virtue_n but_o by_o consequent_a only_o and_o by_o virtue_n of_o that_o law_n of_o god_n which_o command_v all_o man_n to_o obey_v their_o superior_n in_o lawful_a thing_n then_o be_v there_o a_o liberty_n leave_v to_o the_o subject_n in_o case_n extraordinary_a and_o of_o some_o press_a necessity_n not_o otherwise_o well_o to_o be_v avoid_v to_o do_v otherwise_o sometime_o than_o the_o constitution_n require_v and_o he_o may_v so_o do_v with_o a_o free_a conscience_n so_o long_o as_o he_o be_v sure_a of_o these_o two_o thing_n first_o that_o he_o be_v drive_v thereunto_o by_o a_o true_a and_o real_a and_o not_o by_o a_o pretend_a necessity_n only_o and_o second_o that_o in_o the_o manner_n of_o do_v he_o use_v such_o godly_a discretion_n as_o neither_o to_o show_v the_o least_o contempt_n of_o the_o law_n in_o himself_o nor_o to_o give_v ill_a example_n to_o other_o to_o despise_v government_n or_o governor_n and_o this_o first_o difference_n be_v material_a and_o so_o be_v the_o second_o also_o if_o not_o much_o more_o which_o be_v this_o if_o the_o magistrate_n constitution_n do_v bind_v the_o conscience_n virtute_fw-la propria_fw-la and_o immediate_o then_o shall_v the_o conscience_n of_o the_o subject_n be_v bind_v to_o obey_v the_o constitution_n of_o the_o magistrate_n ex_fw-la intuitu_fw-la praecepti_fw-la upon_o the_o bare_a knowledge_n and_o by_o the_o bare_a warrant_n thereof_o without_o far_a enquiry_n and_o consequent_o shall_v be_v bind_v to_o obey_v as_o well_o in_o unlawful_a thing_n as_o lawful_a which_o consequence_n though_o they_o that_o teach_v otherwise_o will_v not_o admit_v yet_o in_o truth_n they_o can_v avoid_v for_o the_o proper_a and_o immediate_a cause_n be_v suppose_v be_v bind_v to_o obey_v the_o law_n of_o the_o magistrate_n in_o lawful_a thing_n and_o not_o as_o well_o in_o unlawful_a thing_n the_o true_a reason_n of_o it_o be_v well_o know_v to_o be_v this_o even_o because_o god_n have_v command_v we_o to_o obey_v in_o lawful_a thing_n but_o not_o in_o unlawful_a but_o for_o they_o to_o assign_v this_o reason_n be_v evident_o to_o overthrow_v their_o own_o tenent_n because_o it_o evident_o derive_v the_o bond_n of_o conscience_n from_o a_o high_a power_n than_o that_o of_o the_o magistrate_n even_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n and_o so_o the_o apostle_n indeed_o do_v both_o of_o they_o derive_v it_o s._n paul_n in_o rom._n 13._o man_n must_v 6._o be_v subject_a to_o the_o high_a power_n why_o because_o the_o power_n be_v command_v of_o god_n and_o that_o for_o conscience_n sake_n too_o why_o because_o the_o magistrate_n be_v the_o minister_n of_o god_n neither_o may_v they_o be_v resist_v and_o why_o because_o to_o resist_v they_o be_v to_o resist_v the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n that_o be_v s._n paul_n doctrine_n and_o s._n peter_n accord_v with_o he_o 2.13_o submit_v yourselves_o say_v he_o to_o every_o ordinance_n of_o man_n what_o for_o the_o man_n sake_n or_o for_o the_o ordinance_n sake_n no_o but_o propter_fw-la dominum_fw-la for_o the_o lord_n sake_n vers_fw-la 13._o and_o all_o this_o may_v very_o well_o stand_v quite_o out_o of_o their_o allegiance_n there_o be_v sundry_a other_o thing_n which_o i_o be_o force_v to_o pass_v by_o very_o needful_a to_o be_v right_o understand_v and_o very_o useful_a for_o the_o resolution_n of_o many_o case_n of_o conscience_n which_o may_v arise_v from_o the_o joint_a consideration_n of_o these_o two_o point_n of_o christian_a obedience_n and_o of_o christian_a liberty_n for_o the_o wind_a of_o ourselves_o out_o of_o which_o perplexity_n when_o they_o may_v concern_v we_o i_o know_v not_o how_o to_o commend_v both_o to_o my_o own_o practice_n and_o you_o a_o short_a and_o full_a rule_n of_o direction_n than_o to_o follow_v the_o clew_n of_o this_o text_n wherein_o the_o apostle_n have_v set_v just_a bound_n both_o to_o our_o obedience_n and_o liberty_n bound_n to_o our_o obedience_n that_o we_o obey_v so_o far_o as_o we_o may_v without_o prejudice_n to_o our_o christian_a liberty_n in_o all_o our_o act_n of_o obedience_n to_o our_o superior_n
