say_v to_o be_v weak_a through_o the_o flesh_n or_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o impetuosity_n and_o violence_n of_o man_n fleshly_a appetite_n rom._n 8._o 3._o nor_o be_v there_o any_o express_a mention_n in_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n of_o any_o necessity_n of_o purity_n of_o heart_n this_o be_v only_o represent_v by_o the_o divers_a legal_a wash_n and_o other_o rite_n the_o mortification_n of_o corrupt_a affection_n be_v signify_v by_o the_o cut_n off_o the_o foreskin_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o great_a substantial_a duty_n be_v veil_v under_o dark_a shadow_n so_o that_o a_o man_n may_v be_v very_o punctual_o observant_a of_o this_o law_n according_a to_o the_o mere_a literal_a sense_n thereof_o and_o yet_o his_o soul_n remain_v perfect_o under_o the_o power_n of_o sinful_a affection_n and_o the_o learned_a mr._n chillingworth_n in_o his_o sermon_n on_o gal._n 5._o 5._o say_v thus_o even_o of_o the_o moral_a duty_n of_o the_o two_o table_n as_o they_o be_v part_n of_o the_o moysaicall_a jewish_a law_n viz._n that_o they_o require_v only_o a_o external_a obedience_n and_o conformity_n to_o the_o affirmative_a precept_n thereof_o and_o a_o abstain_v from_o a_o outward_a practice_n of_o the_o negative_a they_o do_v not_o reach_v unto_o the_o conscience_n no_o more_o than_o the_o national_a law_n of_o other_o kingdom_n do_v so_o that_o for_o example_n when_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n forbid_v adultery_n upon_o pain_n of_o death_n he_o that_o shall_v in_o his_o heart_n lust_n after_o a_o woman_n can_v not_o be_v account_v a_o transgressor_n of_o moses_n his_o law_n neither_o be_v he_o liable_a to_o the_o punishment_n therein_o specify_v whereas_o the_o gospel_n require_v not_o only_o a_o outward_a and_o as_o i_o may_v say_v corporal_a obedience_n to_o god_n commandment_n but_o also_o a_o inward_a sanctification_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o conscience_n upon_o the_o same_o penalty_n of_o everlasting_a damnation_n with_o the_o former_a and_o what_o be_v now_o say_v proceed_v he_o of_o the_o moral_a precept_n as_o they_o be_v part_n of_o moses_n his_o law_n by_o the_o same_o proportion_n likewise_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v of_o the_o judicial_a and_o as_o for_o the_o promise_v of_o this_o law_n they_o be_v only_o of_o temporal_a good_a thing_n and_o therefore_o the_o gospel_n be_v call_v by_o the_o author_n to_o the_o hebrew_n the_o bring_n in_o of_o a_o better_a hope_n chap._n 7._o 19_o and_o be_v say_v to_o be_v establish_v upon_o better_a promise_n chap._n 8._o 6._o it_o be_v confess_v that_o promise_n of_o heavenly_a thing_n be_v contain_v in_o those_o of_o earthly_a as_o some_o of_o the_o latter_a be_v type_n of_o the_o former_a particular_o the_o land_n of_o canaan_n of_o the_o eternal_a rest_n in_o heaven_n and_o the_o promise_n of_o good_a thing_n in_o the_o general_n have_v those_o of_o the_o other_o life_n imply_v in_o they_o but_o there_o be_v not_o the_o least_o express_a mention_n in_o this_o law_n of_o any_o life_n after_o this_o i_o do_v not_o say_v in_o any_o part_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n but_o in_o this_o law_n now_o then_o see_v it_o abound_v with_o temporal_a promise_n and_o none_o but_o such_o be_v in_o express_a term_n contain_v therein_o it_o be_v no_o wonder_n if_o it_o become_v a_o occasion_n to_o the_o sensual_a jew_n of_o their_o be_v the_o more_o eager_a and_o vehement_a in_o prosecute_a the_o profit_n honour_n and_o pleasure_n of_o this_o life_n as_o it_o be_v of_o their_o be_v the_o more_o mercenary_a in_o their_o obedience_n the_o like_a may_v be_v say_v of_o the_o threaten_n of_o this_o law_n they_o be_v all_o so_o express_v as_o if_o they_o be_v only_o of_o present_a temporal_a evil_n and_o the_o jew_n for_o the_o most_o part_n look_v no_o far_a than_o the_o outward_a letter_n of_o these_o threaten_n it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v expect_v that_o they_o shall_v be_v excite_v by_o they_o to_o obey_v from_o any_o high_a motive_n than_o the_o mere_a fear_n of_o such_o evil_n as_o those_o that_o do_v not_o look_v beyond_o the_o letter_n of_o the_o promise_n be_v obedient_a only_o from_o the_o hope_n of_o some_o sensual_a present_a good_a and_o by_o this_o mean_n especial_o do_v this_o law_n gender_n to_o bondage_n as_o we_o read_v it_o do_v gal._n 4._o 24._o the_o terrible_a manner_n in_o which_o the_o law_n be_v give_v and_o the_o threaten_n of_o present_a death_n or_o other_o temporal_a calamity_n upon_o the_o transgression_n thereof_o do_v occasion_n that_o slavish_a sear_n which_o the_o apostle_n call_v the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n in_o those_o word_n you_o have_v not_o receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n again_o to_o fear_v rom._n 8._o 5._o god_n deal_v with_o the_o jew_n as_o it_o be_v most_o fit_a to_o deal_v with_o such_o a_o carnal_a such_o a_o stiff-necked_a stubborn_a and_o disingenuous_a people_n who_o will_v not_o be_v wrought_v upon_o and_o overcome_v by_o love_n to_o himself_o or_o a_o sense_n of_o the_o loveliness_n of_o virtue_n and_o true_a goodness_n nor_o regard_v any_o law_n but_o such_o as_o be_v enforce_v with_o severe_a present_a penalty_n or_o promise_n of_o sensual_a good_a thing_n which_o obedience_n of_o they_o be_v most_o true_o and_o proper_o the_o obedience_n of_o slave_n a_o servile_a and_o mercenary_a obedience_n so_o that_o this_o law_n have_v be_v abuse_v by_o the_o jew_n to_o the_o so_o much_o the_o more_o captivate_v they_o to_o their_o fleshly_a lust_n for_o this_o reason_n chief_o be_v it_o lay_v aside_o namely_o because_o the_o liberty_n which_o consist_v in_o a_o through_o compliance_n with_o the_o rule_n of_o righteousness_n the_o obligation_n of_o this_o law_n will_v have_v great_o obstruct_v the_o promote_a of_o and_o the_o thing_n express_o require_v in_o this_o law_n be_v such_o as_o have_v no_o internal_a goodness_n in_o they_o be_v weak_a and_o beggarly_a element_n as_o the_o apostle_n call_v they_o gal._n 4._o 9_o the_o imposition_n of_o many_o such_o must_v needs_o be_v apt_a to_o call_v away_o man_n mind_n and_o affection_n from_o those_o that_o be_v essential_o and_o immutable_o good_a while_o the_o spiritual_a meaning_n of_o those_o injunction_n be_v either_o not_o understand_v or_o not_o attend_v to_o and_o that_o it_o have_v this_o effect_n upon_o the_o generality_n of_o the_o jew_n by_o this_o mean_n be_v a_o case_n too_o plain_a to_o need_v to_o be_v prove_v and_o though_o the_o great_a substantial_a duty_n which_o be_v in_o their_o own_o nature_n good_a and_o necessary_a and_o of_o eternal_a obligation_n be_v inculcate_v upon_o they_o by_o all_o their_o prophet_n as_o well_o as_o teach_v by_o natural_a light_n such_o as_o do_v justice_n love_v mercy_n walk_v humble_o with_o god_n and_o the_o like_a yet_o they_o general_o be_v so_o sottish_a as_o to_o think_v that_o he_o value_v sacrifice_n and_o the_o other_o ceremonial_a and_o external_n performance_n of_o the_o law_n so_o much_o above_o such_o duty_n nay_o though_o he_o have_v express_o also_o declare_v the_o quite_o contrary_a as_o that_o their_o exact_a and_o diligent_a observation_n of_o those_o will_v make_v expiation_n for_o their_o remissness_n in_o these_o and_o full_o satisfy_v for_o gross_a immorality_n they_o trust_v in_o lie_a word_n say_v 4._o the_o temple_n of_o the_o lord_n the_o temple_n of_o the_o lord_n the_o temple_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v these_o imply_v that_o their_o continual_a attendance_n on_o the_o service_n there_o perform_v according_a to_o the_o prescription_n of_o the_o law_n will_v effectual_o secure_v they_o from_o divine_a vengeance_n although_o they_o refuse_v to_o amend_v their_o way_n and_o be_v never_o so_o immoral_a in_o their_o practice_n and_o their_o constant_a trade_n in_o sacrifice_n in_o ritual_n and_o ceremonial_a thing_n occasion_v their_o have_v but_o very_o little_a sense_n of_o thing_n moral_o good_a so_o that_o that_o distinction_n be_v almost_o lose_v among_o they_o of_o thing_n positive_o and_o moral_o so_o or_o thing_n good_a only_o because_o command_v and_o thing_n command_v because_o good_a their_o be_v so_o intent_n upon_o a_o many_o little_a thing_n cause_v they_o to_o sleight_n and_o overlook_v the_o great_a one_o as_o our_o saviour_n tell_v the_o pharisee_n luke_n 11._o 42._o you_o tithe_v mint_n and_o rue_n and_o all_o manner_n of_o herb_n and_o pass_v over_o judgement_n and_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o mat._n 23._o 23._o you_o pay_v this_fw-mi of_o mint_n and_o anise_v and_o cummin_n and_o have_v omit_v the_o weighty_a matter_n of_o the_o law_n judgement_n mercy_n and_o faith_n and_o their_o omit_v these_o thing_n be_v too_o plain_a a_o argument_n alone_o though_o there_o be_v other_o proof_n of_o it_o of_o their_o have_v scarce_o any_o notion_n of_o thing_n absolute_o immutable_o and_o essential_o good_a and_o evil_a which_o be_v occasion_v as_o i_o say_v by_o their_o
evil_a from_o a_o overpower_a sense_n of_o the_o becomingness_n and_o excellency_n of_o the_o one_o and_o the_o vileness_n and_o odiousness_n of_o the_o other_o be_v the_o very_a perfection_n of_o liberty_n and_o this_o be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v impossible_a to_o be_v obtain_v by_o creature_n or_o by_o ourselves_o that_o by_o the_o help_n of_o god_n grace_n it_o be_v in_o a_o large_a measure_n even_o in_o this_o life_n attainable_a i_o mean_v such_o a_o sense_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a as_o shall_v certain_o determine_v we_o to_o good_a and_o against_o evil_n in_o most_o of_o the_o instance_n of_o each_o there_o be_v some_o immorality_n and_o wicked_a action_n that_o they_o who_o have_v attain_v to_o but_o very_o mean_a and_o ordinary_a degree_n of_o goodness_n can_v persuade_v themselves_o so_o much_o as_o to_o endeavour_v to_o reconcile_v their_o mind_n to_o nay_o there_o be_v some_o that_o no_o man_n can_v easy_o be_v suppose_v able_a to_o consent_v to_o but_o a_o extraordinary_o deprave_v and_o wicked_a wretch_n let_v the_o motive_n that_o be_v use_v to_o persuade_v he_o be_v what_o they_o will_n such_o as_o blaspheme_v of_o god_n contrive_v the_o murder_n of_o our_o parent_n or_o of_o a_o most_o oblige_a friend_n torture_v of_o innocent_a babe_n and_o the_o like_a horrid_a villainy_n sure_o then_o a_o man_n be_v capable_a of_o such_o a_o vivid_n sense_n of_o the_o hatefulness_n of_o sin_n in_o general_n as_o will_v while_o it_o last_v render_v it_o impossible_a for_o he_o to_o will_v deliberate_o to_o commit_v any_o know_a sin_n whatsoever_o it_o be_v confess_v that_o we_o can_v hope_v to_o get_v past_o all_o danger_n of_o sudden_a surprisal_n so_o long_o as_o we_o inhabit_v these_o body_n and_o remain_v in_o our_o present_a unhappy_a circumstance_n but_o i_o say_v so_o powerful_a a_o sense_n of_o the_o infinite_a unrighteousness_n disingenuity_n unreasonableness_n folly_n and_o madness_n of_o oppose_v the_o holy_a will_n of_o our_o great_a creator_n and_o bless_a redeemer_n may_v by_o the_o divine_a assistance_n be_v acquire_v even_o on_o this_o side_n heaven_n as_o shall_v determine_v we_o effectual_o against_o all_o deliberate_a and_o wilful_a violation_n of_o the_o divine_a law_n for_o this_o we_o have_v the_o authority_n of_o a_o great_a apostle_n s._n john_n say_v in_o his_o 1_o epist._n 3._o 9_o whosoever_o be_v bear_v of_o god_n do_v not_o commit_v sin_n for_o his_o seed_n remain_v in_o he_o neither_o can_v he_o sin_n because_o he_o be_v bear_v of_o god_n he_o here_o affirm_v not_o only_o that_o those_o who_o have_v attain_v to_o extraordinary_a measure_n of_o goodness_n can_v sin_n that_o be_v can_v will_v to_o sin_n deliberate_o but_o likewise_o that_o no_o regenerate_v or_o true_o good_a man_n can_v he_o can_v thus_o sin_n because_o he_o be_v bear_v of_o god_n because_o he_o be_v a_o child_n of_o god_n by_o the_o inward_a renew_n of_o his_o holy_a spirit_n and_o because_o his_o seed_n remain_v in_o he_o that_o be_v the_o divine_a seed_n which_o divine_a seed_n i_o take_v to_o be_v the_o same_o thing_n with_o the_o several_a time_n mention_v quick_a powerful_a and_o pungent_a sense_n of_o the_o horrid_a nature_n and_o most_o dreadful_a effect_n and_o consequent_n of_o wilful_a sin_v it_o be_v more_o than_o moral_o impossible_a that_o while_o this_o sense_n abide_v in_o its_o strength_n and_o vigour_n the_o good_a man_n shall_v lapse_v into_o such_o sin_n have_v we_o not_o such_o a_o sense_n of_o the_o vileness_n of_o some_o action_n as_o to_o say_v frequent_o i_o can_v not_o for_o all_o the_o world_n find_v in_o my_o heart_n that_o be_v in_o my_o will_n to_o do_v so_o or_o so_o and_o if_o we_o have_v the_o same_o sense_n of_o all_o sin_n which_o it_o be_v unreasonable_a not_o to_o have_v consider_v they_o as_o sin_n or_o transgression_n of_o the_o everlasting_a rule_n of_o righteousness_n for_o consider_v they_o under_o that_o notion_n all_o sin_n be_v alike_o i_o say_v have_v we_o the_o same_o sense_n of_o all_o sin_n we_o shall_v as_o true_o say_v concern_v each_o i_o can_v find_v in_o my_o heart_n i_o can_v will_v to_o consent_v unto_o it_o chap._n xii_o which_o treat_v of_o one_o branch_n of_o the_o first_o inference_n from_o the_o argument_n of_o the_o second_o section_n that_o in_o freedom_n from_o the_o dominion_n of_o corrupt_a affection_n do_v that_o liberty_n principal_o or_o rather_o whole_o consist_v which_o christ_n have_v purchase_v for_o we_o namely_o that_o several_a notion_n of_o christian_a liberty_n which_o have_v too_o much_o prevail_v be_v false_a and_o of_o dangerous_a consequence_n the_o first_o of_o which_o be_v that_o which_o make_v it_o to_o consist_v whole_o or_o in_o part_n in_o freedom_n from_o the_o obligation_n of_o the_o moral_a law_n certain_a text_n urge_v by_o the_o antinomian_o in_o favour_n of_o it_o vindicate_v from_o the_o sense_n they_o put_v upon_o they_o and_o the_o extreme_a wildness_n and_o wickedness_n of_o it_o expose_v in_o five_o particular_n we_o proceed_v now_o to_o the_o inference_n from_o the_o latter_a argument_n viz._n that_o in_o freedom_n from_o the_o dominion_n of_o corrupt_a affection_n and_o all_o the_o sad_a consequent_n thereof_o our_o christian_a liberty_n do_v eminent_o consist_v and_o whole_o too_o the_o liberty_n which_o christ_n have_v purchase_v for_o we_o gentile_n and_o first_o we_o infer_v from_o hence_o that_o several_a notion_n of_o christian_a liberty_n that_o have_v too_o much_o prevail_v be_v false_a and_o of_o dangerous_a consequence_n we_o will_v speak_v to_o first_o that_o which_o make_v it_o to_o consist_v in_o freedom_n from_o the_o obligation_n of_o the_o moral_a law_n second_o that_o which_o make_v it_o to_o consist_v in_o freedom_n from_o those_o law_n of_o man_n which_o enjoin_v or_o forbid_v indifferent_a thing_n three_o that_o which_o make_v liberty_n of_o conscience_n a_o branch_n of_o christian_a liberty_n first_o for_o that_o notion_n of_o christian_a liberty_n which_o make_v it_o to_o consist_v either_o whole_o or_o in_o part_n in_o freedom_n from_o the_o obligation_n of_o the_o moral_a law_n this_o be_v extreme_o wild_a and_o wicked_a as_o will_v appear_v from_o what_o have_v be_v discourse_v it_o be_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o antinomian_o and_o they_o produce_v in_o favour_n of_o it_o all_o those_o text_n wherein_o we_o be_v say_v to_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o law_n as_o particular_o rom._n 7._o 6._o now_o we_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o law_n that_o be_v dead_a wherein_o we_o be_v hold_v etc._n etc._n gal._n 2._o 19_o i_o through_o the_o law_n be_o dead_a to_o the_o law_n etc._n etc._n rom._n 6._o 14._o you_o be_v not_o under_o the_o law_n but_o under_o under_o the_o law_n etc._n etc._n to_o this_o it_o be_v answer_v that_o there_o be_v indeed_o many_o text_n which_o assert_v our_o be_v free_v from_o the_o law_n but_o the_o question_n be_v what_o law_n they_o mean_a or_o rather_o it_o be_v out_o of_o question_n that_o they_o mean_v not_o the_o moral_a law_n for_o there_o be_v no_o need_n of_o do_v more_o than_o read_v throughout_o the_o forementioned_a verse_n to_o satisfy_v we_o that_o the_o apostle_n understand_v in_o each_o of_o they_o nothing_o less_o than_o that_o law_n nay_o we_o need_v do_v no_o more_o to_o be_v assure_v that_o he_o abominate_v this_o notion_n of_o christian_a liberty_n for_o whereas_o he_o say_v rom._n 7._o 6._o now_o we_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o law_n that_o be_v dead_a wherein_o we_o be_v hold_v it_o follow_v that_o we_o shall_v serve_v in_o newness_n of_o spirit_n and_o not_o in_o the_o oldness_n of_o the_o letter_n that_o be_v that_o we_o shall_v no_o long_o be_v mere_o external_o he_o be_v so_o that_o i_o may_v live_v unto_o god_n or_o be_v in_o all_o thing_n conform_v to_o the_o rule_n of_o righteousness_n and_o goodness_n which_o he_o have_v prescribe_v all_o which_o be_v comprehend_v in_o the_o moral_a law_n again_o whereas_o he_o tell_v the_o roman_n chap._n 6._o 14._o you_o be_v not_o under_o the_o law_n but_o under_o grace_n this_o come_v in_o as_o a_o proof_n of_o what_o he_o say_v immediate_o before_o in_o the_o same_o verse_n viz._n sin_n shall_v not_o have_v dominion_n over_o you_o last_o in_o say_v gal._n 4._o 5._o that_o christ_n be_v make_v of_o a_o woman_n make_v under_o the_o law_n to_o redeem_v they_o that_o be_v under_o the_o law_n he_o give_v this_o in_o
we_o find_v concern_v obedience_n to_o king_n and_o the_o high_a power_n s._n peter_n say_v 1_o epist._n 2._o 13._o submit_v yourselves_o to_o every_o ordinance_n of_o man_n for_o the_o lord_n sake_n
