that_o the_o church_n of_o england_n be_v a_o godly_a heap_n of_o god_n corn_n but_o withal_o we_o must_v confess_v we_o be_v full_a of_o chaff_n that_o be_v of_o profane_a &_o wicked_a hypocrite_n who_o heart_n and_o mind_n abound_v in_o sin_n and_o rebellion_n and_o many_o of_o our_o best_a professor_n be_v also_o too_o full_a of_o chaff_n that_o be_v of_o corruption_n and_o do_v give_v themselves_o too_o much_o liberty_n in_o many_o sin_n but_o alas_o the_o pure_a wheat_n how_o thin_a be_v it_o scatter_v how_o hard_o to_o find_v a_o man_n at_o least_o a_o family_n which_o dedicate_v themselves_o to_o the_o lord_n in_o holy_a and_o sincere_a obedience_n and_o labour_n to_o make_v conscience_n of_o all_o sin_n now_o therefore_o see_v we_o be_v god_n corn_n field_n and_o we_o have_v some_o pure_a wheat_n among_o much_o chaff_n therefore_o god_n will_v winnow_v we_o to_o find_v out_o the_o corn_n if_o he_o have_v but_o one_o corn_n of_o wheat_n in_o a_o handful_n of_o chaff_n but_o one_o good_a man_n of_o many_o he_o will_v stir_v all_o the_o heap_n for_o those_o few_o corn_n he_o will_v not_o care_v to_o blow_v all_o the_o chaff_n to_o hell_n to_o find_v out_o those_o few_o corn_n of_o wheat_n to_o lay_v they_o up_o in_o heaven_n so_o that_o out_o of_o all_o question_n england_n be_v so_o full_o of_o chaff_n must_v look_v to_o be_v winnow_v now_o for_o the_o first_o fan_n of_o his_o word_n it_o have_v be_v use_v in_o this_o land_n these_o five_o and_o thirty_o year_n and_o that_o as_o powerful_o and_o as_o plentiful_o as_o any_o where_o in_o the_o world_n and_o yet_o alas_o many_o be_v more_o godless_a more_o ignorant_a more_o profane_a than_o ever_o they_o be_v yea_o wickedness_n grow_v and_o the_o chaff_n increase_v above_o the_o wheat_n be_v sure_a therefore_o that_o god_n will_v bring_v his_o second_o fan_n upon_o we_o because_o we_o will_v not_o suffer_v the_o first_o and_o the_o mild_a and_o gentle_a fan_n of_o his_o word_n to_o try_v and_o corruption_n which_o we_o will_v not_o suffer_v the_o fan_n of_o god_n word_n to_o blow_v from_o us._n the_o first_o have_v so_o long_o blow_v in_o vain_a that_o the_o second_o must_v needs_o come_v upon_o we_o &_o it_o have_v already_o begin_v to_o blow_v three_o or_o four_o blast_n have_v blow_v over_o we_o famine_n pestilence_n earthquake_n fire_n water_n wind_n these_o have_v so_o blow_v some_o of_o we_o that_o they_o have_v take_v away_o a_o great_a number_n of_o us._n for_o we_o that_o remain_v this_o only_a remain_v that_o we_o week_n strengthen_v ourselves_o by_o grace_n to_o be_v able_a to_o stand_v against_o the_o next_o blast_n for_o come_v it_o will_v &_o when_o it_o come_v no_o wealth_n nor_o worldly_a thing_n can_v enable_v we_o to_o endure_v it_o only_a faith_n &_o repentance_n &_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n will_v stand_v at_o that_o day_n now_o therefore_o in_o that_o so_o fearful_a a_o fan_a abide_v we_o see_v it_o be_v so_o near_o as_o appear_v by_o the_o the_o sinfulness_n of_o his_o people_n his_o own_o he_o free_o lip_n confess_v in_o these_o word_n i_o be_o a_o man_n of_o pollute_a lip_n that_o be_v i_o be_o a_o miserable_a and_o sinful_a man_n and_o therefore_o i_o fear_v and_o tremble_v to_o stand_v in_o god_n presence_n nay_o i_o dare_v not_o look_v upon_o the_o lord_n for_o my_o sin_n but_o it_o may_v be_v demand_v how_o can_v the_o man_n be_v a_o very_a sea_n of_o iniquity_n &_o which_o always_o appear_v the_o more_o the_o near_a a_o man_n come_v to_o god_n and_o therefore_o do_v now_o most_o apparent_o discover_v itself_o in_o the_o prophet_n when_o he_o be_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o lord_n himself_o second_o he_o complain_v of_o some_o actual_a sin_n of_o his_o life_n and_o it_o be_v more_o likely_a of_o some_o sin_n of_o omission_n call_n then_o of_o commission_n for_o we_o find_v not_o that_o the_o prophet_n be_v ever_o touch_v with_o any_o great_a sin_n &_o where_o we_o know_v it_o not_o we_o be_v in_o charity_n not_o to_o imagine_v it_o so_o that_o it_o be_v most_o probable_a he_o complain_v of_o some_o small_a fault_n or_o negligence_n in_o his_o ministry_n as_o not_o preach_v to_o the_o people_n at_o some_o time_n when_o he_o ought_v or_o not_o preach_v so_o willing_o or_o cheerful_o as_o he_o shall_v or_o desire_v to_o leave_v preach_v because_o the_o people_n be_v stubborn_a &_o disobedient_a or_o some_o impatience_n in_o his_o ministry_n when_o the_o people_n be_v rebellious_a and_o resist_v his_o doctrine_n which_o passion_n may_v the_o rather_o vex_v he_o as_o we_o read_v it_o do_v jeremy_n the_o jew_n be_v so_o stubborn_a &_o stifnecked_a a_o people_n or_o it_o may_v be_v some_o want_n of_o zeal_n or_o forwardness_n these_o or_o some_o such_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o his_o fear_n and_o the_o conscience_n of_o these_o make_v he_o here_o cry_v out_o that_o he_o can_v stand_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n where_o we_o learn_v first_o what_o a_o tender_a conscience_n conscience_n godly_a minister_n must_v have_v above_o all_o man_n namely_o that_o they_o must_v make_v conscience_n not_o of_o the_o great_a and_o gross_a sin_n only_o but_o even_o of_o the_o low_a &_o least_o sin_n and_o he_o must_v endeavour_n in_o his_o call_n not_o only_o to_o be_v clear_a of_o great_a crime_n but_o as_o far_o as_o may_v be_v to_o be_v free_a from_o the_o least_o appearance_n of_o evil_a and_o from_o the_o least_o negligence_n in_o his_o place_n for_o a_o small_a faultin_n other_o man_n be_v great_a in_o they_o and_o that_o which_o may_v be_v some_o way_n pardonable_a in_o other_o man_n be_v no_o way_n in_o they_o they_o must_v therefore_o watch_v over_o themselves_o most_o careful_o sin_n and_o take_v heed_n to_o all_o their_o way_n &_o for_o this_o end_n be_v it_o that_o a_o minister_n in_o godly_a wisdom_n must_v often_o deprive_v himself_o even_o of_o many_o thing_n which_o it_o may_v be_v lawful_o he_o may_v use_v lest_o his_o liberty_n be_v be_v it_o that_o a_o minister_n can_v be_v too_o careful_a in_o his_o call_n in_o his_o word_n diet_n company_n recreation_n apparel_n gestures_z and_o in_o his_o whole_a carriage_n because_o little_a sin_n be_v so_o great_a in_o they_o especial_o private_o minister_n must_v here_o learn_v the_o apostle_n lesson_n to_o be_v instant_a in_o season_n and_o out_o of_o season_n to_o preach_v and_o exhort_v to_o comfort_v and_o rebuke_v public_o and_o private_o to_o good_a to_o bad_a when_o it_o be_v well_o take_v when_o it_o be_v ill_o take_v when_o they_o willing_o receive_v it_o and_o when_o they_o stubborn_o resist_v it_o when_o they_o commend_v he_o and_o reward_v he_o and_o when_o they_o rail_v at_o he_o and_o persecute_v he_o for_o it_o thus_o must_v he_o be_v diligent_a in_o season_n and_o out_o of_o season_n for_o the_o least_o negligence_n in_o his_o duty_n or_o omit_v the_o least_o opportunity_n of_o do_v good_a will_v when_o god_n visit_v his_o conscience_n be_v a_o burden_n and_o vexation_n to_o he_o as_o it_o be_v here_o to_o the_o prophet_n and_o furthermore_o if_o these_o small_a sin_n humble_v thus_o afflict_v the_o prophet_n then_o alas_o what_o be_v to_o be_v think_v of_o those_o minister_n who_o make_v no_o conscience_n of_o foul_a and_o scandalous_a sin_n how_o shall_v simony_n incontinency_n usury_n inhospitality_n covetousness_n ignorance_n idleness_n careless_a nonresidencie_n how_o shall_v these_o i_o say_v and_o other_o like_o grievous_a crime_n oppress_v &_o burden_n the_o soul_n when_o as_o the_o small_a sin_n do_v so_o affright_v this_o of_o and_o yet_o they_o be_v not_o touch_v sure_o these_o man_n be_v not_o of_o so_o tender_a conscience_n as_o the_o prophet_n be_v &_o either_o the_o prophet_n here_o be_v much_o more_o nice_a than_o need_v or_o else_o these_o man_n will_v prove_v to_o be_v in_o a_o miserable_a estate_n last_o let_v minister_n of_o care_n and_o conscience_n be_v here_o comfort_v in_o the_o example_n do_v of_o the_o prophet_n who_o be_v there_o but_o may_v find_v imperfection_n and_o blemish_n in_o himself_o which_o will_v often_o make_v he_o cry_v out_o woe_n be_v i_o but_o let_v not_o that_o discomfort_n they_o but_o rather_o rejoice_v that_o they_o can_v see_v their_o own_o weakness_n as_o the_o prophet_n do_v here_o if_o they_o have_v cause_n to_o exclaim_v against_o themselves_o they_o be_v not_o alone_o it_o be_v this_o and_o all_o other_o holy_a prophet_n case_n before_o they_o in_o have_v imperfection_n in_o themselves_o they_o be_v no_o more_o miserable_a than_o the_o prophet_n be_v but_o let_v they_o labour_n to_o be_v as_o bless_v in_o see_v &_o complain_v of_o themselves_o as_o he_o be_v and_o let_v every_o minister_v assure_v himself_o that_o the_o more_o he_o make_v conscience_n even_o of_o the_o least_o sin_n of_o all_o the_o more_o he_o resemble_v the_o ancient_a holy_a prophet_n &_o the_o more_o likely_a be_v he_o to_o work_v effectual_o in_o his_o ministry_n for_o his_o duty_n be_v to_o work_v in_o his_o people_n a_o conscience_n not_o of_o great_a sin_n only_o but_o even_o of_o all_o but_o how_o can_v he_o do_v that_o in_o they_o if_o he_o have_v not_o his_o people_n wherein_o let_v we_o first_o of_o all_o observe_v the_o connexion_n and_o dependence_n of_o these_o two_o cause_n one_o upon_o another_o for_o as_o they_o be_v both_o joint_o the_o cause_n of_o his_o fear_n so_o one_o of_o they_o be_v in_o a_o sort_n the_o cause_n of_o another_o he_o fear_v because_o of_o his_o own_o and_o his_o people_n sin_n and_o because_o he_o see_v the_o three_o god_n be_v near_a unto_o we_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o his_o ordinance_n as_o his_o word_n and_o ordinance_n sacrament_n and_o public_a service_n in_o the_o congregation_n four_o there_o be_v a_o day_n most_o apparent_a and_o sensible_a presence_n of_o god_n which_o shall_v be_v at_o the_o last_o judgement_n when_o all_o man_n shall_v stand_v before_o he_o in_o his_o immediate_a presence_n to_o receive_v their_o judgement_n now_o all_o these_o presence_n of_o god_n be_v hateful_a to_o a_o wicked_a these_o man_n for_o the_o first_o a_o wicked_a man_n by_o his_o good_a will_v never_o think_v of_o god_n and_o if_o sometime_o a_o thought_n of_o god_n like_o lightning_n flash_v in_o his_o mind_n present_o he_o god_n quench_v it_o as_o be_v a_o most_o unwelcome_a and_o burdensome_a thought_n unto_o he_o therefore_o say_v david_n the_o wicked_a be_v so_o proud_a he_o care_v not_o for_o god_n neither_o 4._o be_v god_n in_o all_o his_o thought_n nay_o god_n himself_o be_v so_o little_a thought_n on_o by_o they_o that_o they_o will_v willing_o think_v of_o nothing_o that_o may_v bring_v god_n into_o their_o thought_n as_o namely_o god_n great_a work_n of_o his_o wonderful_a judgement_n of_o who_o the_o same_o prophet_n say_v in_o the_o same_o place_n thy_o judgement_n be_v far_o above_o out_o of_o his_o sight_n as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v 5._o he_o labour_v to_o set_v they_o far_o from_o the_o eye_n of_o his_o mind_n that_o he_o may_v never_o have_v occasion_n to_o think_v of_o they_o nor_o on_o god_n by_o they_o that_o this_o be_v true_a for_o his_o thought_n '_o i_o have_v endeavour_v thus_o to_o prove_v by_o god_n own_o testimony_n because_o thought_n can_v be_v discern_v by_o majesty_n man_n but_o alas_o for_o the_o second_o that_o be_v for_o his_o word_n that_o be_v too_o apparent_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o all_o man_n for_o observe_v it_o and_o you_o shall_v never_o see_v a_o wicked_a man_n by_o his_o good_a will_v have_v god_n in_o his_o mouth_n unless_o it_o be_v to_o abuse_v his_o name_n by_o swear_v or_o blasphemy_n nor_o willing_o do_v he_o hear_v any_o other_o man_n talk_v or_o discourse_v large_o of_o god_n or_o of_o his_o greatness_n and_o his_o justice_n but_o such_o talk_n be_v tedious_a &_o cumbersome_a unto_o he_o and_o if_o he_o can_v break_v it_o off_o with_o other_o discourse_n than_o he_o sit_v as_o mute_a as_o they_o never_o come_v to_o the_o church_n nor_o receive_v oft_o than_o the_o law_n lay_v upon_o they_o but_o further_a than_o that_o as_o the_o psalmist_n say_v they_o never_o call_v upon_o god_n but_o as_o judgement_n for_o the_o last_o that_o they_o fear_v and_o abhor_v above_o all_o they_o wish_v in_o their_o hart_n it_o may_v never_o be_v and_o therefore_o s._n paul_n make_v it_o a_o token_n of_o a_o true_a believer_n and_o a_o holy_a man_n to_o love_v and_o look_v for_o the_o appear_v of_o jesus_n christ_n whereupon_o it_o follow_v 8._o that_o even_o so_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n of_o a_o wicked_a man_n to_o fear_v the_o last_o judgement_n &_o to_o wish_v it_o may_v never_o be_v and_o when_o it_o come_v indeed_o &_o they_o see_v they_o can_v escape_v it_o what_o they_o do_v hateful_a be_v god_n prsence_n to_o a_o sinful_a man_n beside_o these_o there_o be_v another_o way_n whereby_o god_n show_v his_o presence_n endure_v and_o that_o be_v by_o extraordinary_a revelation_n of_o his_o glory_n immediate_o which_o be_v usual_a in_o the_o old_a testament_n as_o here_o to_o the_o prophet_n but_o now_o be_v not_o to_o be_v expect_v but_o how_o terrible_a that_o be_v to_o the_o sinful_a nature_n of_o man_n appear_v in_o this_o place_n for_o if_o the_o prophet_n a_o most_o holy_a man_n who_o conscience_n accuse_v he_o but_o of_o a_o few_o and_o small_a sin_n yet_o thus_o cry_v out_o amaze_v &_o affright_v at_o the_o revelation_n of_o some_o part_n of_o god_n glory_n alas_o how_o will_v they_o be_v terrify_v with_o it_o
who_o conscience_n be_v burden_v with_o great_a and_o grievous_a sin_n &_o that_o without_o repentance_n thus_o we_o see_v the_o ground_n of_o his_o reason_n how_o true_a it_o be_v that_o a_o man_n look_v about_o he_o chamber_n afore_o he_o come_v there_o therefore_o if_o god_n rebuke_v moses_n for_o step_v too_o hasty_o towards_o the_o bush_n where_o his_o presence_n be_v and_o say_v come_v not_o too_o near_o for_o â—_o the_o place_n where_o thoustande_v be_v holy_a ground_n then_o how_o will_v god_n rebuke_v and_o check_v the_o conscience_n of_o such_o carnal_a man_n as_o careless_o &_o carnal_o rush_v into_o the_o pulpit_n and_o to_o god_n holy_a table_n where_o god_n be_v present_a in_o a_o far_o more_o excellent_a manner_n than_o he_o be_v in_o the_o bush_n and_o if_o they_o be_v so_o to_o be_v blame_v who_o preparation_n enter_v into_o this_o call_n without_o fear_n and_o reverence_n then_o how_o much_o more_o faulty_a be_v they_o who_o be_v minister_n dare_v venture_v to_o preach_v or_o minister_v the_o holy_a sacrament_n without_o holy_a and_o private_a preparation_n &_o sanctification_n of_o themselves_o but_o rush_v upon_o they_o as_o upon_o common_a &_o profane_a action_n whereas_o god_n be_v present_a there_o in_o a_o most_o holy_a and_o glorious_a manner_n these_o man_n sure_o will_v say_v the_o prophet_n here_o be_v of_o too_o nice_a a_o conscience_n but_o fearful_o and_o terrible_o shall_v god_n appear_v at_o last_o unto_o such_o man_n as_o care_v not_o how_o they_o appear_v in_o his_o holy_a presence_n second_o this_o show_v the_o reason_n of_o the_o practice_n of_o all_o christian_a church_n sermon_n who_o use_v to_o pray_v before_o the_o sermon_n &_o after_o namely_o not_o for_o decorum_n only_o &_o to_o grace_v the_o action_n but_o to_o sanctify_v and_o to_o humble_v ourselves_o because_o than_o we_o come_v before_o god_n presence_n they_o therefore_o do_v not_o think_v reverent_o enough_o of_o god_n and_o his_o presence_n who_o do_v by_o their_o practice_n in_o any_o sort_n make_v way_n to_o the_o contrary_n three_o we_o may_v here_o learn_v the_o pitiful_a sinner_n case_n of_o those_o minister_n who_o be_v so_o presumptuous_a as_o to_o exercise_v that_o holy_a function_n &_o yet_o remain_v 〈◊〉_d their_o sin_n without_o repentance_n what_o do_v these_o man_n they_o approach_v to_o the_o burn_a bush_n with_o their_o shoe_n on_o their_o foot_n that_o be_v into_o god_n presence_n in_o their_o sin_n what_o shall_v come_v of_o it_o in_o the_o end_n sure_o that_o burn_a fire_n shall_v consume_v they_o the_o least_o sin_n &_o small_a negligence_n affright_v this_o holy_a prophet_n when_o he_o shall_v go_v into_o god_n presence_n but_o these_o man_n 16._o dare_v come_v into_o the_o sanctuary_n of_o god_n yea_o dare_v take_v god_n word_n in_o their_o mouth_n be_v and_o yet_o hate_v to_o be_v reform_v and_o do_v cast_v the_o glorious_a word_n of_o god_n behind_o their_o back_n which_o they_o preach_v to_o other_o with_o their_o mouth_n these_o man_n may_v wonder_v at_o this_o holy_a prophet_n niceness_n or_o else_o all_o the_o world_n may_v wonder_v at_o their_o profaneness_n a_o little_a pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n fear_v he_o to_o come_v into_o god_n presence_n but_o these_o dare_v do_v it_o with_o eye_n ear_n lip_n foot_n hand_n hart_n and_o all_o pollute_a their_o eye_n pollute_v with_o careless_a look_v at_o all_o vanity_n their_o ear_n with_o hear_v and_o their_o lip_n with_o speak_v wanton_a &_o wicked_a talk_n their_o foot_n with_o run_v into_o wicked_a company_n their_o hand_n with_o practise_v and_o their_o heart_n with_o devise_v and_o consent_v fruitless_a to_o all_o wickedness_n this_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o the_o labour_n of_o such_o man_n be_v almost_o unprofitable_a because_o they_o dare_v come_v into_o god_n presence_n in_o their_o sin_n in_o many_o place_n of_o our_o land_n there_o be_v by_o god_n blessing_n much_o teach_n yet_o there_o be_v little_a reformation_n in_o the_o life_n of_o the_o most_o but_o contrariwise_o some_o fall_n to_o atheism_n some_o to_o papism_n some_o into_o foul_a sin_n not_o to_o be_v name_v among_o christian_o where_o be_v the_o cause_n sure_o not_o in_o the_o good_a gospel_n nor_o in_o our_o doctrine_n nor_o in_o the_o teach_n of_o it_o but_o one_o very_o principal_a cause_n be_v many_o minister_n come_v into_o god_n presence_n unsanctified_a &_o in_o their_o sin_n not_o care_v how_o loose_o they_o live_v in_o the_o face_n of_o their_o people_n and_o therefore_o god_n in_o justice_n though_o he_o instant_o smite_v not_o they_o with_o visible_a vengeance_n for_o their_o presumption_n yet_o he_o smite_v the_o judgement_n people_n with_o spiritual_a blindness_n that_o they_o regard_v not_o their_o doctrine_n but_o look_v at_o their_o life_n and_o do_v rather_o follow_v the_o profaneness_n of_o the_o one_o than_o the_o holiness_n of_o the_o other_o minister_n be_v such_o in_o who_o god_n will_v be_v sanctify_v therefore_o because_o they_o do_v not_o so_o but_o dishonour_v he_o by_o come_v into_o his_o presence_n in_o their_o sin_n therefore_o he_o can_v abide_v they_o nor_o give_v any_o blessing_n to_o their_o labour_n all_o minister_n therefore_o as_o they_o will_v see_v any_o fruit_n of_o their_o ministry_n let_v they_o first_o sanctify_v themselves_o &_o cleanse_v their_o heart_n by_o repentance_n afore_o they_o presume_v to_o stand_v up_o to_o rebuke_v sin_n in_o other_o else_o let_v they_o not_o think_v that_o life_n their_o golden_a word_n shall_v do_v so_o much_o good_a as_o their_o leaden_a life_n shall_v do_v hurt_v and_o they_o may_v happen_v to_o confirm_v man_n that_o already_o be_v convert_v but_o hardly_o shall_v any_o such_o man_n convert_v any_o soul_n from_o popery_n or_o profaneness_n and_o it_o be_v a_o vain_a conceit_n for_o man_n to_o imagine_v there_o be_v any_o force_n in_o eloquence_n or_o humane_a learning_n to_o overthrow_v that_o sin_n in_o other_o which_o rule_v and_o reign_v in_o themselves_o our_o church_n and_o all_o reform_a church_n may_v make_v use_n of_o this_o doctrine_n for_o it_o be_v the_o glory_n of_o a_o church_n to_o have_v their_o doctrine_n powerful_a &_o effectual_a for_o the_o win_n of_o soul_n therefore_o it_o concern_v they_o to_o take_v order_n as_o well_o that_o their_o minister_n be_v godly_a man_n as_o good_a scholar_n &_o their_o life_n inoffensive_a as_o well_o as_o their_o doctrine_n sound_n or_o else_o they_o will_v find_v in_o woeful_a experience_n that_o they_o pull_v down_o as_o much_o with_o the_o one_o hand_n as_o they_o build_v up_o with_o the_o other_o but_o most_o near_o this_o doctrine_n touch_v minister_n themselves_o who_o must_v know_v their_o case_n be_v most_o fearful_a of_o all_o man_n if_o they_o come_v into_o god_n presence_n in_o their_o profaneness_n for_o as_o no_o man_n be_v more_o honourable_a than_o a_o learned_a and_o holy_a minister_n so_o none_o more_o contemptible_a in_o this_o world_n none_o more_o miserable_a for_o that_o to_o come_v than_o he_o that_o by_o his_o loose_a &_o lewd_a life_n do_v scandalize_v his_o doctrine_n and_o let_v he_o assure_v himself_o that_o for_o his_o presumption_n in_o rush_v into_o god_n presence_n in_o his_o sin_n he_o shall_v in_o this_o world_n be_v cast_v out_o as_o unsavoury_a salt_n 13._o and_o tread_v down_o of_o man_n with_o the_o foot_n of_o contempt_n and_o in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v he_o shall_v above_o all_o man_n cry_v out_o in_o most_o extreme_a torment_n of_o conscience_n wâ—_n be_v i_o that_o my_o eye_n must_v see_v the_o king_n and_o lord_n of_o host_n and_o so_o because_o he_o will_v not_o in_o this_o world_n come_v into_o god_n presence_n in_o sanctification_n and_o holiness_n he_o shall_v therefore_o in_o fear_n and_o horror_n be_v hale_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n glory_n at_o the_o last_o day_n there_o to_o receive_v the_o just_a sentence_n of_o his_o condemnation_n last_o all_o painful_a and_o godly_a minister_n may_v receive_v comfort_n not_o to_o be_v duty_n discourage_v or_o drive_v from_o god_n presence_n because_o of_o their_o corruption_n or_o infirmity_n for_o we_o see_v it_o be_v the_o prophet_n case_n but_o let_v they_o still_o approach_v in_o fear_n and_o reverence_n and_o be_v
so_o far_o from_o be_v drive_v from_o their_o duty_n because_o they_o be_v sinful_a man_n dare_v not_o come_v into_o god_n presence_n without_o much_o fear_n as_o let_v they_o contrariwise_o be_v assure_v that_o the_o more_o they_o tremble_v at_o god_n presence_n here_o the_o less_o shall_v they_o fear_v it_o at_o the_o last_o day_n and_o when_o profane_a and_o ungodly_a man_n who_o in_o this_o world_n fear_v not_o to_o stand_v in_o god_n presence_n in_o their_o horrible_a sin_n shall_v cry_v to_o the_o mountain_n fall_v upon_o we_o and_o hill_n cover_v we_o and_o hide_v we_o from_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n then_o such_o minister_n as_o in_o this_o world_n in_o fear_n and_o tremble_a and_o always_o in_o repentance_n do_v approach_v into_o god_n presence_n shall_v then_o look_v up_o and_o lift_v up_o their_o head_n &_o shall_v say_v to_o the_o holy_a angel_n &_o all_o the_o power_n of_o heaven_n help_v we_o and_o hasten_v we_o to_o come_v into_o the_o glorious_a presence_n of_o our_o god_n and_o saviour_n and_o thus_o we_o see_v the_o manisold_a use_n of_o this_o doctrine_n to_o our_o church_n and_o ministry_n papist_n second_o in_o asmuch_o as_o here_o the_o prophet_n in_o a_o conscience_n of_o his_o corruption_n fear_v and_o cry_v out_o at_o the_o least_o apparition_n of_o god_n glory_n the_o vanity_n and_o false_a deal_n of_o the_o collusion_n church_n of_o rome_n be_v here_o discover_v in_o who_o legend_n &_o story_n of_o their_o saint_n nothing_o be_v more_o common_a than_o apparition_n from_o heaven_n of_o saint_n depart_v of_o glorious_a angel_n of_o the_o virgin_n mary_n and_o that_o so_o familiar_o as_o sometime_o she_o sing_v with_o they_o in_o their_o cell_n kiss_v some_o of_o they_o and_o let_v they_o suck_v her_o breast_n nay_o of_o god_n himself_o and_o especial_o of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n jesus_n who_o they_o say_v appear_v i_o know_v not_o how_o oft_o to_o one_o man_n namely_o to_o saint_n francis_n and_o appear_v as_o he_o be_v crucify_v with_o his_o wound_n and_o imprint_v those_o wound_n of_o he_o in_o francis_n his_o body_n which_o they_o say_v he_o bear_v all_o his_o life_n and_o that_o they_o bleed_v whensoever_o he_o it_o be_v not_o in_o judgement_n but_o in_o mercy_n unto_o they_o it_o be_v therefore_o the_o duty_n of_o all_o man_n both_o to_o acknowledge_v this_o mercy_n of_o god_n in_o due_a thankfulness_n and_o withal_o to_o remember_v when_o they_o see_v infirmity_n in_o minister_n that_o they_o be_v but_o man_n and_o that_o if_o they_o have_v not_o the_o ministry_n of_o man_n how_o hard_o it_o will_v go_v with_o they_o consider_v that_o the_o least_o measure_n of_o god_n own_o presence_n can_v be_v endure_v by_o any_o man_n 2._o inasmuch_o as_o god_n presence_n be_v so_o glorious_a sacrament_n in_o itself_o and_o fearful_a to_o our_o nature_n all_o man_n be_v teach_v to_o prepare_v themselves_o by_o holy_a prayer_n by_o humisiation_n and_o confession_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o unworthiness_n afore_o they_o come_v to_o god_n word_n or_o sacrament_n for_o they_o come_v at_o that_o time_n into_o god_n presence_n they_o therefore_o be_v not_o to_o come_v in_o their_o security_n nor_o in_o their_o ordinary_a sin_n unrepented_a of_o lest_o god_n strike_v their_o conscience_n with_o a_o sense_n of_o his_o fearful_a displeasure_n &_o make_v they_o cry_v out_o upon_o far_o great_a cause_n than_o here_o the_o propet_v do_v three_o and_o last_o we_o learn_v here_o the_o different_a nature_n and_o property_n of_o presence_n sin_n and_o holiness_n sin_n even_o the_o least_o sin_n nay_o a_o very_a sinfulness_n of_o nature_n make_v a_o man_n afraid_a of_o god_n presence_n that_o sin_n unrepented_a of_o do_v so_o appear_v in_o adam_n who_o as_o in_o his_o integrity_n he_o speak_v &_o converse_v even_o in_o a_o familiar_a sort_n with_o god_n so_o no_o soon_o have_v he_o finned_a but_o he_o run_v from_o god_n and_o hide_v himself_o &_o that_o even_o the_o least_o sin_n not_o repent_v of_o do_v so_o also_o appear_v in_o this_o prophet_n who_o be_v a_o holy_a man_n yet_o his_o conscience_n be_v privy_a to_o itself_o of_o some_o small_a omission_n or_o negligence_n in_o his_o call_n he_o cry_v out_o he_o be_v undo_v because_o he_o see_v the_o lord_n of_o host_n but_o contrariwise_o the_o state_n of_o perfect_a presence_n holiness_n &_o the_o want_n
apply_v their_o doctrine_n to_o their_o audience_n in_o such_o manner_n as_o the_o circumstance_n of_o place_n time_n or_o person_n do_v require_v some_o minister_n come_v to_o a_o ignorant_a and_o unhumbled_a people_n and_o teach_v they_o the_o gospel_n which_o never_o know_v the_o law_n here_o the_o fiery_a coal_n be_v use_v but_o the_o lip_n be_v not_o touch_v that_o be_v good_a doctrine_n teach_v but_o not_o well_o apply_v for_o that_o the_o law_n shall_v first_o be_v lay_v to_o their_o conscience_n other_o beat_v all_o upon_o the_o law_n when_o it_o may_v be_v their_o hearer_n be_v a_o people_n sufficient_o cast_v down_o and_o have_v more_o need_n to_o be_v raise_v up_o with_o the_o sweet_a comfort_n of_o the_o gospel_n other_o use_v to_o lay_v open_a the_o nakedness_n of_o the_o court_n in_o the_o country_n and_o to_o reprove_v the_o fault_n of_o prince_n and_o great_a magistrate_n before_o the_o common_a people_n who_o have_v more_o need_n of_o the_o catechism_n other_o bring_v the_o catechism_n or_o point_n of_o ordinary_a instruction_n into_o the_o court_n where_o the_o duty_n of_o king_n and_o councillor_n shall_v be_v teach_v in_o all_o plainness_n and_o sincerity_n other_o bring_v their_o new_a opinion_n or_o controversall_a point_n unto_o popular_a audience_n which_o indeed_o be_v fit_a for_o the_o school_n other_o busy_a themselves_o about_o ceremony_n when_o the_o substance_n be_v in_o danger_n to_o be_v lose_v all_o these_o have_v it_o may_v be_v the_o coal_n of_o fire_n but_o it_o be_v misapply_v and_o not_o apply_v to_o the_o pollute_a lip_n let_v all_o minister_n therefore_o learn_v this_o point_n of_o wisdom_n of_o the_o angel_n to_o apply_v the_o medicine_n of_o their_o doctrine_n to_o the_o time_n person_n and_o place_n which_o be_v infect_v so_o shall_v they_o be_v sure_a not_o to_o take_v pain_n in_o vain_a and_o thus_o much_o of_o the_o circumstance_n of_o his_o consolation_n it_o follow_v in_o the_o text_n loe_o thy_o iniquity_n shall_v be_v take_v away_o and_o sin_n thy_o sin_n shall_v be_v purge_v after_o the_o circumstance_n follow_v the_o ground_n and_o matter_n of_o his_o consolation_n and_o that_o be_v the_o forgiveness_n of_o his_o sin_n where_o first_o let_v we_o mark_v how_o it_o and_o the_o instrument_n be_v annex_v together_o loe_o together_o say_v the_o angel_n this_o coal_n haâ—h_v touch_v tay_n lip_n and_o thy_o iniquity_n shall_v be_v forgive_v and_o thy_o sin_n purge_v as_o though_o he_o have_v be_v cleanse_v by_o the_o coal_n where_o we_o may_v note_v how_o great_o god_n magnify_v the_o mean_n which_o himself_o ordain_v even_o true_a remission_n and_o salvation_n to_o the_o right_n and_o holy_a use_v of_o they_o though_o it_o come_v not_o from_o they_o but_o from_o his_o own_o mercy_n and_o power_n of_o his_o ordinance_n it_o be_v therefore_o no_o marvel_n though_o god_n sanctify_v the_o child_n by_o the_o ministry_n of_o water_n in_o baptism_n and_o feed_v our_o soul_n not_o in_o the_o lord_n supper_n by_o feed_v our_o body_n with_o bread_n and_o wine_n and_o no_o marvel_n though_o the_o careless_a neglect_n of_o either_o of_o they_o be_v damnation_n to_o he_o that_o despise_v they_o see_v they_o be_v god_n instrument_n ordain_v by_o he_o to_o convey_v his_o grace_n unto_o we_o and_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o we_o be_v to_o know_v that_o remission_n or_o salvation_n be_v no_o more_o tie_v to_o the_o very_a element_n or_o the_o action_n than_o here_o the_o prophet_n forgiveness_n be_v to_o the_o coal_n of_o fire_n but_o the_o main_a point_n be_v that_o for_o the_o prophet_n consolation_n the_o angel_n tell_v he_o his_o iniquity_n shall_v be_v take_v away_o and_o his_o sin_n purge_v as_o thereby_o he_o have_v say_v thy_o sin_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o thy_o fear_n therefore_o that_o thy_o fear_n may_v be_v take_v away_o thy_o sin_n shall_v be_v forgive_v where_o we_o learn_v that_o as_o few_o come_v by_o sin_n so_o conscience_n learn_v the_o true_a way_n of_o comfort_v trouble_v and_o distress_a conscience_n namely_o first_o to_o draw_v he_o unto_o a_o sight_n of_o some_o particular_a sin_n then_o to_o summon_v he_o into_o god_n presence_n and_o there_o to_o arraign_v he_o for_o those_o sin_n until_o the_o view_n of_o the_o foulness_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n justice_n have_v sufficient_o humble_v he_o and_o then_o to_o labour_v to_o persuade_v his_o conscience_n upon_o good_a ground_n of_o the_o pardon_n of_o those_o sin_n by_o christ_n jesus_n this_o be_v the_o way_n that_o god_n use_v and_o devise_v this_o be_v the_o sure_a way_n that_o can_v fail_v some_o think_v that_o all_o trouble_n of_o mind_n be_v nothing_o but_o melancholy_a and_o therefore_o psalm_n think_v nothing_o needs_o but_o physic_n and_o outward_a comfort_n but_o he_o that_o consider_v in_o what_o case_n the_o prophet_n here_o be_v or_o david_n when_o he_o make_v the_o 6._o the_o 32._o or_o the_o 51._o psalm_n will_v be_v of_o another_o mind_n and_o will_v find_v that_o nothing_o can_v proper_o trouble_v the_o mind_n but_o sin_n therefore_o as_o the_o wise_a physician_n in_o his_o cure_n first_o search_v out_o the_o cause_n and_o then_o endeavour_n to_o take_v it_o away_o so_o the_o good_a physician_n of_o the_o soul_n must_v first_o of_o all_o search_n into_o the_o cause_n of_o his_o sickness_n that_o be_v his_o sin_n and_o must_v take_v they_o away_o which_o if_o they_o do_v not_o than_o all_o their_o labour_n be_v lose_v for_o all_o the_o company_n music_n recreation_n wine_n diet_n nay_o all_o worldly_a comfort_n &_o delight_n if_o it_o be_v the_o advancement_n to_o a_o kingdom_n can_v so_o much_o comfort_v the_o distress_a soul_n of_o a_o sinner_n as_o this_o voice_n of_o a_o minister_n speak_v from_o god_n upon_o good_a ground_n thy_o sin_n be_v forgive_v thou_o now_o to_o lay_v down_o what_o be_v those_o true_a and_o good_a ground_n whereupon_o a_o minister_n may_v conscience_n safe_o and_o comfortable_o pronounce_v pardon_n of_o sin_n to_o a_o sinner_n belong_v proper_o to_o another_o place_n in_o the_o next_o place_n let_v we_o here_o observe_v repent_v how_o the_o lord_n afore_o he_o renew_v the_o prophet_n commission_n or_o send_v he_o to_o preach_v to_o the_o people_n first_o humble_v he_o for_o his_o sin_n and_o then_o upon_o his_o repentance_n give_v he_o pardon_v teach_v we_o that_o no_o minister_n be_v well_o qualify_v to_o the_o holy_a duty_n of_o the_o ministry_n unless_o he_o have_v true_o repent_v of_o his_o sin_n and_o have_v obtain_v pardon_n and_o mercy_n in_o the_o messiah_n minister_n labour_n for_o qualification_n but_o the_o true_a minister_n of_o god_n will_v labour_v for_o this_o qualification_n above_o all_o other_o for_o doubtless_o he_o shall_v pronounce_v most_o powerful_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n to_o other_o to_o who_o conscience_n god_n have_v pronounce_v pardon_n of_o his_o own_o in_o the_o last_o place_n let_v we_o observe_v how_o the_o prophet_n be_v to_o be_v comfort_v before_o they_o he_o go_v this_o new_a embassage_n the_o lord_n be_v so_o careful_a for_o he_o that_o rather_o than_o he_o be_v not_o comfort_v if_o there_o be_v no_o man_n to_o do_v it_o a_o angel_n shall_v be_v send_v to_o be_v his_o comforter_n &_o if_o there_o be_v not_o another_o prophet_n to_o do_v it_o a_o angel_n shall_v pronounce_v unto_o he_o the_o pardon_n of_o his_o sin_n let_v this_o be_v a_o
some_o for_o tradesman_n some_o for_o man_n some_o for_o woman_n but_o repentance_n be_v for_o all_o without_o which_o it_o may_v be_v say_v of_o all_o and_o every_o one_o of_o age_n not_o one_o except_v no_o repentance_n no_o salvation_n these_o sermon_n be_v in_o my_o hand_n and_o not_o deliver_v to_o i_o from_o hand_n to_o hand_n but_o take_v with_o this_o hand_n of_o i_o from_o his_o god_n church_n of_o who_o treasure_n upon_o earth_n i_o make_v no_o question_n but_o they_o be_v a_o part_n and_o i_o hearty_o desire_v you_o my_o godly_a friend_n &_o all_o other_o faithful_a christian_n to_o solicit_v the_o lord_n in_o prayer_n for_o i_o that_o i_o may_v faithful_o discharge_v myself_o of_o that_o great_a charge_n which_o in_o this_o respect_n lie_v upon_o i_o and_o that_o his_o grace_n and_o blessing_n may_v be_v on_o i_o and_o all_o other_o who_o be_v to_o be_v employ_v in_o this_o service_n wherein_o have_v the_o lord_n so_o please_v we_o can_v hearty_o have_v wish_v never_o to_o have_v be_v employ_v but_o that_o his_o life_n may_v have_v ease_v we_o of_o the_o labour_n and_o that_o as_o i_o begin_v with_o this_o so_o i_o or_o some_o other_o better_a able_a for_o he_o who_o be_v the_o author_n hereof_o who_o mouth_n speak_v it_o from_o the_o feel_n of_o his_o soul_n &_o who_o soul_n be_v now_o bind_v up_o in_o the_o bundle_n of_o life_n i_o know_v and_o can_v in_o good_a conscience_n conceal_v the_o great_a delight_n you_o have_v always_o have_v in_o the_o read_n of_o his_o book_n the_o reverend_a opinion_n you_o have_v of_o he_o live_v and_o how_o heavy_o and_o passionate_o you_o take_v his_o death_n and_o departure_n therefore_o to_o cheer_v you_o up_o in_o want_n of_o he_o i_o send_v you_o here_o this_o little_a book_n his_o own_o child_n beget_v in_o his_o life_n time_n but_o bear_v after_o his_o death_n observe_v it_o well_o and_o you_o shall_v find_v it_o not_o unlike_o the_o father_n yea_o you_o shall_v discern_v in_o it_o the_o father_n spirit_n and_o it_o doubt_v not_o but_o to_o find_v entertainment_n with_o they_o of_o who_o the_o father_n be_v so_o well_o respect_v and_o for_o myself_o i_o spare_v to_o rehearse_v what_o interest_n you_o have_v in_o i_o &_o all_o my_o labour_n it_o be_v no_o more_o than_o you_o worthy_o deserve_v and_o shall_v have_v in_o i_o for_o ever_o you_o be_v the_o fair_a flower_n in_o this_o success_n of_o my_o labour_n in_o other_o i_o shall_v then_o never_o have_v cause_n to_o say_v with_o the_o prophet_n i_o have_v labour_v in_o vain_a &_o spend_v my_o strength_n in_o vain_a but_o my_o judgement_n be_v with_o the_o lord_n &_o my_o work_n with_o my_o god_n and_o if_o i_o know_v you_o not_o to_o be_v such_o as_o take_v more_o delight_n in_o do_v well_o then_o in_o hear_v of_o it_o i_o will_v prove_v at_o large_a what_o i_o have_v speak_v of_o you_o yet_o give_v i_o leave_v to_o say_v that_o which_o without_o open_a wrong_n i_o may_v not_o conceal_v that_o beside_o your_o rare_a knowledge_n and_o godly_a zeal_n to_o religion_n and_o other_o duty_n of_o the_o first_o table_n to_o god_n himself_o your_o charity_n &_o pity_n to_o the_o needy_a distress_a christian_n at_o home_o and_o abroad_o your_o merciful_a deal_n with_o they_o who_o be_v in_o your_o power_n your_o benevolence_n to_o learning_n and_o namely_o to_o some_o in_o the_o university_n do_v all_o proclaim_v to_o the_o world_n those_o your_o due_a praise_n which_o i_o well_o know_v your_o modesty_n do_v spare_v once_o to_o name_n neither_o will_v i_o have_v say_v thus_o much_o be_v it_o not_o for_o this_o cold_a and_o barren_a age_n wherein_o we_o live_v that_o so_o when_o our_o preach_n can_v move_v yet_o your_o godly_a example_n may_v stir_v up_o pardon_v i_o therefore_o i_o pray_v you_o and_o think_v it_o no_o wrong_n to_o you_o which_o be_v a_o benefit_n to_o god_n church_n but_o go_v forward_o in_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o lord_n your_o god_n &_o hold_v on_o in_o that_o happy_a 24._o course_n you_o have_v begin_v be_v faithful_a unto_o the_o end_n the_o lord_n will_v give_v you_o the_o crown_n of_o life_n faithful_a be_v he_o which_o have_v promise_v who_o will_v also_o do_v it_o proceed_v good_a sir_n to_o honour_v learning_n in_o yourself_o and_o other_o and_o religion_n especial_o which_o be_v the_o principal_a learning_n and_o proceed_v both_o of_o you_o to_o practice_v religion_n in_o your_o own_o person_n and_o in_o your_o family_n hold_v on_o to_o shine_v before_o your_o family_n and_o among_o the_o people_n where_o you_o dwell_v in_o zeal_n and_o holiness_n hold_v on_o hereby_o still_o to_o shame_v popery_n to_o stop_v your_o enemy_n mouth_n and_o to_o honour_v that_o holy_a religion_n which_o you_o profess_v to_o gain_v comfort_n of_o good_a conscience_n to_o yourselves_o &_o assurance_n of_o eternal_a reward_n and_o last_o to_o encourage_v i_o in_o those_o painful_a duty_n which_o lie_v upon_o i_o for_o i_o open_o profess_v that_o your_o religious_a zeal_n and_o love_n of_o the_o truth_n with_o many_o other_o good_a help_n be_v principal_a encouragement_n in_o my_o ministry_n &_o especial_a motive_n unto_o i_o to_o undertake_v the_o charge_n of_o publication_n of_o so_o many_o of_o the_o work_n of_o this_o holy_a man_n decease_v as_o may_v not_o in_o better_a manner_n be_v do_v by_o other_o but_o i_o keep_v you_o too_o long_o from_o this_o holy_a exhortation_n follow_v i_o therefore_o send_v you_o to_o it_o &_o it_o to_o you_o and_o from_o you_o to_o the_o church_n of_o god_n for_o i_o dare_v not_o make_v it_o to_o be_v private_o you_o and_o i_o wherein_o the_o whole_a church_n have_v interest_n as_o well_o as_o we_o it_o be_v preach_v in_o the_o field_n but_o it_o be_v worthy_a to_o be_v admit_v into_o our_o heart_n home_o as_o good_a corn_n deserve_v and_o as_o it_o be_v god_n corn_n so_o in_o you_o i_o desire_v all_o holy_a christian_n to_o lay_v it_o up_o in_o god_n garner_n that_o be_v in_o their_o heart_n and_o soul_n and_o thus_o commit_v this_o little_a volume_n to_o your_o read_n the_o matter_n
chaff_n they_o shall_v fly_v away_o with_o the_o wind_n of_o god_n justice_n of_o all_o these_o point_n in_o order_n for_o the_o first_o the_o holy_a ghost_n say_v search_v yourselves_o the_o word_n be_v common_o read_v thus_o gather_v yourselves_o which_o though_o it_o be_v good_a for_o that_o in_o repentance_n a_o man_n gather_v himself_o and_o all_o his_o wit_n together_o which_o afore_o be_v veil_n before_o his_o face_n so_o that_o he_o see_v nothing_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o the_o curse_n due_a for_o sin_n hell_n and_o damnation_n seek_v to_o devour_v he_o he_o see_v they_o not_o although_o live_v always_o in_o sin_n he_o walk_v in_o the_o very_a jaw_n of_o hell_n itself_o and_o because_o he_o see_v not_o this_o fearful_a danger_n therefore_o he_o refuse_v no_o sin_n at_o repentance_n and_o the_o first_o step_n into_o grace_n this_o doctrine_n teach_v we_o what_o faith_n and_o repentance_n be_v general_a in_o the_o world_n all_o man_n say_v they_o believe_v and_o have_v repent_v long_o ago_o but_o try_v it_o well_o and_o we_o shall_v find_v in_o the_o body_n of_o our_o nation_n but_o a_o lip_n faith_n and_o a_o sip_n repentance_n for_o even_o when_o they_o but_o a_o good_a man_n look_v homeward_o &_o judge_v himself_o and_o in_o judge_v condemn_v himself_o far_o above_o other_o man_n and_o that_o because_o by_o search_v into_o his_o own_o heart_n and_o way_n he_o know_v that_o by_o himself_o which_o he_o know_v not_o by_o any_o man_n in_o the_o world_n beside_o so_o then_o we_o must_v search_v not_o other_o man_n but_o ourselves_o our_o own_o heart_n and_o our_o own_o life_n be_v our_o charge_n and_o burden_n the_o life_n of_o other_o man_n concern_v we_o not_o be_v private_a man_n further_o they_o either_o to_o follow_v they_o be_v good_a or_o take_v heed_n of_o they_o be_v evil_a but_o to_o search_v or_o to_o be_v inquisitive_a into_o they_o be_v no_o duty_n command_v we_o but_o rather_o a_o foul_a &_o a_o base_a vice_n forbid_v of_o god_n indeed_o magistrate_n in_o their_o people_n pastor_n in_o their_o congregation_n and_o householders_n in_o their_o family_n be_v to_o search_v but_o they_o can_v search_v only_o for_o criminal_a cause_n or_o open_a actual_a sin_n but_o this_o search_n must_v be_v of_o our_o heart_n which_o no_o man_n can_v search_v but_o ourselves_o only_o few_o man_n have_v a_o calling_n to_o inquire_v into_o other_o man_n life_n but_o every_o man_n have_v a_o calling_n to_o search_v into_o himself_o but_o alas_o man_n do_v far_o otherwise_o they_o suffer_v themselves_o to_o rot_v in_o their_o own_o sin_n and_o erect_v a_o inquisition_n over_o other_o man_n life_n &_o it_o be_v to_o be_v see_v in_o daily_a experience_n that_o those_o man_n who_o be_v the_o great_a searcher_n and_o pryer_n into_o other_o man_n be_v the_o neglecter_n and_o forgetter_n of_o themselves_o and_o contrariwise_o they_o who_o do_v narrow_o search_v themselves_o and_o their_o own_o way_n and_o look_v into_o the_o corner_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n do_v find_v so_o much_o work_v to_o do_v with_o themselves_o that_o they_o little_o busy_v themselves_o with_o other_o man_n and_o thus_o much_o may_v suffice_v for_o that_o point_n it_o follow_v o_o nation_n not_o worthy_a to_o be_v belove_v the_o three_o point_n who_o must_v search_v the_o jew_n who_o be_v here_o term_v a_o nation_n not_o worthy_a to_o be_v belove_v &_o yet_o for_o all_o that_o they_o be_v bid_v to_o search_v themselves_o that_o so_o upon_o their_o repentance_n they_o may_v be_v belove_v where_o we_o may_v see_v the_o unspeakable_a love_n of_o god_n and_o his_o wonderful_a mercy_n offer_v grace_n unto_o such_o man_n as_o be_v altogether_o unworthy_a of_o it_o god_n child_n be_v by_o nature_n like_o other_o man_n and_o god_n find_v nothing_o in_o they_o why_o to_o respect_v they_o above_o other_o but_o even_o of_o his_o own_o mercy_n make_v they_o worthy_a who_o of_o themselves_o be_v not_o therefore_o how_o worthy_a be_v that_o god_n to_o have_v all_o the_o love_n of_o our_o heart_n who_o love_v we_o when_o we_o be_v not_o worthy_a to_o be_v belove_v but_o let_v we_o examine_v more_o particular_o why_o god_n do_v call_v the_o jew_n a_o nation_n not_o worthy_a to_o be_v belove_v i_o answer_v god_n have_v bless_v they_o above_o other_o nation_n he_o give_v they_o his_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o thereby_o make_v they_o his_o people_n &_o commit_v to_o their_o trust_n his_o holy_a word_n and_o oracle_n but_o 2._o he_o deal_v not_o so_o with_o other_o nation_n neither_o have_v the_o heathen_a knowledge_n of_o his_o law_n beside_o all_o this_o they_o have_v a_o better_a 20._o land_n than_o other_o about_o they_o it_o flow_v with_o milk_n and_o honey_n that_o be_v with_o all_o commodity_n &_o delight_n and_o though_o their_o country_n be_v but_o little_a yet_o themselves_o so_o populous_a and_o so_o powerful_a that_o while_o they_o please_v god_n no_o enemy_n dare_v set_v upon_o they_o thus_o for_o soul_n and_o body_n they_o be_v every_o way_n a_o nation_n bless_v of_o god_n a_o people_n belove_v of_o god_n above_o all_o other_o now_o how_o do_v this_o people_n thus_o
be_v a_o man_n of_o the_o most_o tender_a conscience_n hitherto_o have_v the_o prophet_n complain_v general_o of_o his_o pollution_n particular_o he_o exclaim_v against_o the_o pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n but_o why_o will_v lip_n some_o say_v complain_v he_o of_o the_o pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n rather_o than_o of_o his_o heart_n or_o his_o hand_n or_o any_o other_o part_n of_o he_o be_v they_o not_o all_o pollute_v yes_o all_o in_o some_o measure_n and_o be_v not_o he_o grieve_v at_o they_o all_o yes_o assure_o we_o must_v grant_v that_o also_o but_o the_o reason_n be_v he_o be_v a_o prophet_n his_o duty_n be_v to_o use_v his_o tongue_n the_o practice_n of_o his_o call_n consist_v tongue_n in_o the_o use_n of_o his_o tongue_n for_o a_o minister_n be_v a_o interpeter_n as_o he_o be_v call_v job_n 33._o 23._o that_o be_v the_o people_n to_o god_n by_o prayer_n and_o god_n to_o the_o people_n by_o preach_v he_o be_v god_n mouth_n and_o the_o people_n mouth_n so_o that_o the_o tongue_n of_o a_o minister_n be_v that_o part_n of_o his_o body_n which_o be_v to_o be_v use_v as_o a_o principal_a instrument_n of_o god_n glory_n and_o more_o to_o the_o set_v forth_o of_o his_o honour_n then_o any_o other_o now_o every_o man_n be_v to_o be_v try_v what_o he_o be_v by_o his_o call_n rather_o than_o by_o any_o other_o accidental_a or_o collateral_a course_n therefore_o the_o honour_n or_o dishonour_n of_o a_o minister_n be_v the_o use_n or_o the_o abuse_n of_o his_o tongue_n and_o his_o comfort_n or_o discomfort_n be_v the_o well_o use_v or_o not_o use_v of_o it_o the_o prophet_n therefore_o here_o affright_v at_o god_n prefence_n conscience_n and_o therefore_o retire_v into_o himself_o present_o his_o conscience_n check_n he_o for_o his_o most_o proper_a sin_n nam_o for_o some_o fault_n or_o negligence_n in_o his_o ministry_n which_o be_v the_o proper_a sin_n of_o that_o call_n and_o therefore_o be_v it_o that_o he_o exclaim_v against_o the_o pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n out_o of_o which_o practice_n of_o his_o we_o may_v learn_v false_a first_o the_o vanity_n of_o the_o papist_n who_o magnify_v the_o merit_n of_o holy_a man_n work_n for_o if_o this_o holy_a prophet_n a_o man_n true_o justify_v &_o extraordinary_o sanctify_v yet_o dare_v not_o stand_v before_o god_n in_o this_o little_a appearance_n of_o his_o glory_n notwithstanding_o all_o his_o zeal_n and_o courage_n and_o conscience_n and_o pain_n and_o suffering_n in_o his_o function_n but_o be_v cast_v down_o so_o far_o from_o a_o conceit_n of_o his_o own_o worth_n that_o he_o cry_v out_o woe_n be_v i_o i_o be_o undo_v how_o then_o can_v we_o who_o be_v no_o better_o but_o much_o worse_a than_o he_o stand_v before_o god_n in_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n in_o the_o great_a appear_v of_o his_o infinite_a justice_n and_o glory_n rather_o doubtless_o as_o here_o the_o small_a pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n and_o negligence_n in_o his_o call_n drive_v he_o out_o of_o all_o conceit_n of_o merit_n when_o once_o he_o come_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n so_o the_o due_a consideration_n of_o our_o so_o many_o and_o foul_a pollution_n above_o he_o shall_v beat_v down_o all_o proud_a conceit_n of_o our_o own_o goodness_n when_o we_o appear_v before_o god._n it_o be_v therefore_o to_o be_v fear_v that_o the_o papist_n who_o thus_o magnify_v their_o own_o merit_n do_v seldom_o or_o never_o enter_v into_o earnest_a consideration_n of_o their_o own_o infirmity_n do_v seldom_o persent_a themselves_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n majesty_n for_o if_o they_o do_v then_o doubtless_o the_o least_o sight_n of_o their_o least_o pollution_n will_v make_v they_o far_o from_o ever_o think_v of_o their_o own_o merit_n supererogation_n they_o also_o tell_v we_o of_o work_n of_o supererogation_n but_o it_o seem_v here_o this_o holy_a prophet_n have_v none_o of_o they_o and_o they_o teach_v a_o man_n may_v in_o this_o life_n life_n perfect_o fulfil_v the_o law_n but_o who_o can_v do_v it_o iâ—_n not_o minister_n and_o what_o minister_n if_o not_o extraordinary_a prophet_n and_o yet_o isaiah_n the_o first_o and_o chief_a of_o they_o exclaim_v here_o in_o pitiful_a manner_n against_o his_o pollution_n doubtless_o if_o the_o papist_n will_v cease_v flatter_v themselves_o and_o not_o examine_v their_o conscience_n by_o their_o own_o please_a corruption_n but_o present_v themselves_o in_o the_o face_n and_o presence_n of_o god_n majesty_n they_o will_v be_v far_o from_o these_o conceit_n all_o in_o the_o next_o place_n whereas_o the_o prophet_n complain_v of_o the_o pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n as_o of_o the_o peculiar_a sin_n of_o his_o place_n minister_n be_v here_o teach_v to_o avoid_v that_o sin_n above_o all_o other_o and_o to_o labour_v in_o that_o duty_n above_o any_o other_o for_o the_o do_n of_o it_o be_v his_o most_o comfort_n the_o want_n of_o it_o be_v his_o most_o vexation_n his_o tongue_n be_v the_o instrument_n give_v he_o to_o honour_n god_n if_o he_o use_v it_o well_o it_o yield_v he_o comfort_n more_o than_o any_o other_o duty_n but_o if_o he_o use_v not_o or_o abuse_v his_o tongue_n the_o pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n will_v be_v the_o heavy_a burden_n of_o all_o they_o therefore_o be_v great_o deceive_v who_o think_v a_o minister_n to_o discharge_v sufficient_o want_n his_o duty_n though_o he_o preach_v not_o if_o he_o keep_v good_a hospitality_n and_o make_v peace_n among_o his_o neighbour_n and_o perform_v other_o work_n of_o charatie_n and_o good_a life_n for_o if_o a_o minister_n have_v not_o this_o virtue_n he_o have_v none_o if_o he_o preach_v not_o if_o he_o abuse_v his_o lip_n or_o if_o he_o open_v they_o not_o he_o have_v no_o conscience_n nor_o can_v have_v any_o comfort_n for_o that_o be_v the_o principal_a duty_n of_o a_o minister_n though_o all_o the_o other_o be_v require_v to_o make_v he_o complete_a the_o want_n of_o they_o may_v condemn_v he_o before_o man_n but_o it_o be_v the_o pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n which_o present_o check_n he_o before_o god_n as_o we_o see_v here_o in_o this_o holy_a prophet_n the_o conclusion_n than_o be_v to_o every_o minister_n that_o if_o he_o have_v all_o the_o virtue_n and_o good_a property_n that_o can_v commend_v a_o man_n in_o the_o world_n yet_o if_o his_o lip_n be_v pollute_v either_o by_o not_o preach_v or_o by_o negligent_a idle_a or_o careless_a preach_n this_o pollution_n will_v so_o stain_v his_o conscience_n and_o so_o burden_n he_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n that_o the_o time_n will_v come_v notwithstanding_o all_o his_o other_o good_a quality_n he_o will_v cry_v out_o in_o far_o more_o pitiful_a manner_n they_o here_o the_o prophet_n do_v woe_n be_v 〈◊〉_d i_o be_o undoâ—â—_n because_o i_o be_o a_o â—an_v of_o pollute_a lip_n it_o follow_v and_o i_o dwell_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o people_n of_o pollute_a pollution_n lip_n the_o prophet_n not_o only_o complain_v of_o his_o own_o pollution_n but_o of_o his_o people_n own_o also_o among_o who_o he_o live_v and_o this_o he_o do_v for_o these_o cause_n first_o to_o teach_v we_o that_o it_o be_v the_o minister_n duty_n to_o confess_v not_o only_o his_o own_o sin_n but_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n &_o to_o complain_v of_o they_o to_o god_n for_o as_o he_o be_v the_o people_n interpretar_n to_o god_n he_o must_v not_o think_v it_o enough_o to_o put_v up_o their_o petition_n to_o unfold_v their_o want_n &_o crave_v relief_n for_o they_o at_o god_n hand_n but_o he_o must_v further_o take_v knowledge_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n and_o make_v both_o public_a and_o private_a confession_n of_o they_o to_o god_n and_o the_o more_o particular_o he_o can_v do_v this_o the_o better_a and_o this_o he_o be_v to_o do_v both_o sin_n for_o the_o people_n good_a and_o for_o his_o own_o also_o because_o it_o can_v be_v but_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n be_v in_o some_o sort_n he_o for_o this_o be_v the_o peculiar_a danger_n of_o the_o magistrate_n and_o minister_n â—â—â—ling_v that_o general_o the_o sin_n of_o their_o people_n be_v they_o i_o mean_v that_o they_o be_v accessary_a to_o the_o sin_n of_o their_o people_n either_o by_o provoke_v they_o by_o their_o evil_a example_n or_o by_o not_o reprove_v or_o not_o hinder_v or_o suffer_v or_o wink_v or_o cover_v &_o conceal_v or_o not_o punish_v they_o or_o not_o careful_o enough_o use_v mean_n to_o prevent_v they_o by_o all_o which_o mean_n and_o many_o more_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o people_n sin_n be_v the_o minister_n by_o communication_n so_o that_o as_o well_o for_o his_o own_o sake_n as_o they_o he_o be_v to_o confess_v to_o god_n their_o sin_n as_o well_o as_o his_o own_o now_o if_o a_o minister_n must_v
to_o live_v there_o and_o send_v out_o other_o man_n and_o give_v testimony_n and_o letter_n of_o commendation_n themselves_o to_o other_o man_n but_o themselves_o stir_v not_o when_o question_n be_v make_v who_o shall_v go_v to_o such_o a_o place_n or_o who_o shall_v be_v send_v to_o such_o a_o parish_n they_o say_v not_o here_o be_o i_o but_o either_o it_o be_v too_o little_a a_o live_n or_o too_o great_a a_o charge_n or_o ill_o seat_v or_o some_o fault_n it_o have_v that_o they_o will_v not_o be_v send_v to_o it_o but_o will_v answer_v god_n and_o his_o church_n there_o be_v such_o a_o man_n and_o give_v he_o letter_n of_o testimony_n or_o commendation_n and_o so_o all_o be_v well_o but_o for_o themslue_n they_o live_v too_o sweet_a and_o easy_a life_n willing_o to_o undertake_v the_o contempt_n and_o burden_n of_o the_o ministry_n let_v such_o man_n therefore_o learn_v when_o god_n &_o his_o church_n give_v they_o a_o calling_n to_o answer_v with_o the_o prophet_n here_o be_o i_o send_v i_o and_o let_v all_o such_o as_o be_v student_n of_o ministry_n divinity_n in_o the_o university_n mark_v here_o the_o prophet_n answer_n not_o i_o will_v be_v ready_a but_o here_o i_o be_o why_o take_v he_o no_o long_a time_n because_o he_o be_v now_o sufficient_o qualify_v where_o let_v they_o learn_v not_o to_o linger_v and_o lie_v rot_v too_o long_o in_o their_o specidative_a course_n but_o when_o they_o be_v competent_o furnish_v with_o learning_n and_o other_o quality_n befit_v that_o call_n let_v they_o show_v themselves_o willing_a and_o ready_a to_o yield_v their_o service_n to_o the_o church_n when_o they_o shall_v be_v call_v for_o as_o a_o apple_n may_v as_o well_o soon_o hang_v too_o long_o on_o the_o tree_n as_o be_v pull_v too_o soon_o and_o both_o make_v it_o unfit_a for_o use_v so_o many_o man_n as_o well_o stay_v too_o long_o as_o go_v out_o too_o soon_o and_o both_o way_n be_v make_v unprofitable_a or_o at_o least_o less_o profitable_a in_o the_o church_n and_o to_o conclude_v this_o second_o point_n it_o be_v not_o unworthy_a to_o be_v note_v that_o the_o prophet_n say_v not_o here_o i_o be_o and_o i_o send_v run_v on_o my_o own_o head_n but_z send_v i_o he_o will_n the_o lord_n to_o send_v he_o then_o where_o be_v they_o who_o dare_v brag_v of_o their_o private_a motion_n and_o will_v run_v when_o they_o be_v not_o send_v the_o prophet_n may_v have_v say_v oh_o word_n now_o i_o feel_v a_o motion_n from_o the_o spirit_n therefore_o i_o will_v go_v and_o preach_v but_o he_o stay_v till_o he_o be_v send_v in_o express_a term_n let_v no_o man_n therefore_o presume_v to_o press_v into_o this_o function_n till_o he_o be_v full_o resolve_v in_o his_o conscience_n that_o god_n and_o his_o church_n have_v say_v unto_o he_o go_v and_o though_o a_o man_n be_v never_o so_o well_o qualify_v with_o all_o manner_n of_o sufficiency_n send_v yet_o let_v he_o sit_v still_o and_o stay_v god_n leisure_n and_o let_v he_o say_v here_o i_o be_o send_v i_o and_o so_o rest_v content_v until_o he_o be_v send_v if_o any_o man_n say_v it_o be_v unfit_a that_o a_o man_n shall_v say_v so_o of_o himself_o i_o answer_v let_v he_o not_o say_v so_o in_o word_n but_o in_o deed_n let_v he_o therefore_o make_v proof_n of_o himself_o and_o give_v the_o church_n trial_n of_o his_o gift_n upon_o which_o experience_n of_o his_o gift_n if_o he_o be_v find_v sufficient_a that_o practice_n of_o he_o be_v all_o one_o and_o much_o more_o than_o if_o he_o have_v say_v here_o i_o be_o send_v i_o thus_o we_o see_v the_o prophet_n will_v not_o stir_v till_o he_o be_v send_v and_o therefore_o in_o the_o next_o word_n he_o be_v bid_v to_o go_v and_o he_o say_v go_v and_o speak_v unto_o this_o people_n here_o be_v the_o three_o and_o last_o point_n receive_v namely_o the_o essential_a word_n of_o his_o commission_n wherein_o after_o god_n have_v seek_v for_o one_o to_o go_v and_o the_o prophet_n have_v present_v himself_o and_o offer_v his_o service_n god_n both_o give_v he_o leave_v to_o go_v and_o further_o do_v furnish_v he_o with_o authority_n both_o to_o go_v and_o speak_v commission_n the_o extraordinary_a prophet_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n or_o the_o apostle_n which_o be_v the_o extraordinary_a cause_n minister_n of_o the_o new_a who_o always_o have_v their_o warrant_n with_o the_o when_o they_o go_v and_o if_o any_o man_n ask_v why_o be_v it_o necessary_a they_o shall_v have_v so_o i_o answer_v the_o reason_n be_v many_o first_o all_o prophet_n and_o minister_n be_v god_n deputy_n and_o commissioner_n it_o king_n be_v therefore_o reason_n that_o they_o have_v authority_n from_o their_o lord_n and_o master_n second_o their_o word_n nor_o deed_n bear_v no_o credit_n nor_o have_v any_o power_n in_o they_o unless_o they_o be_v speak_v by_o virtue_n protection_n of_o a_o commission_n nor_o have_v their_o labour_n any_o blessing_n unless_o god_n give_v it_o three_o these_o person_n have_v no_o protection_n nor_o safety_n unless_o they_o be_v god_n ambassador_n and_o how_o be_v they_o so_o unless_o they_o be_v call_v and_o send_v by_o god_n and_o have_v authority_n give_v of_o god_n for_o these_o cause_n no_o man_n be_v to_o thrust_v himself_o into_o the_o ministry_n without_o a_o call_n from_o god_n and_o therefore_o no_o marvel_n though_o those_o heaven_n for_o ordinary_o heaven_n there_o be_v none_o such_o and_o the_o popish_a church_n do_v but_o deceive_v themselves_o and_o cozen_v the_o world_n who_o tell_v we_o of_o so_o many_o apparition_n that_o happen_v to_o their_o monk_n and_o friar_n for_o now_o ordinary_o god_n speak_v in_o another_o manner_n to_o his_o church_n for_o in_o general_n duty_n god_n speak_v to_o we_o out_o of_o his_o word_n and_o holy_a scripture_n and_o in_o particular_a word_n and_o personal_a duty_n where_o the_o word_n in_o plain_a term_n serve_v not_o he_o speak_v to_o a_o man_n by_o his_o own_o conscience_n and_o by_o the_o voice_n of_o his_o church_n out_o of_o his_o word_n god_n show_v thou_o the_o dignity_n and_o excellency_n of_o this_o call_n 18._o to_o be_v a_o minister_n of_o the_o word_n namely_o they_o be_v his_o messenger_n and_o ambassador_n etc._n etc._n that_o so_o he_o may_v win_v they_o to_o love_n and_o affect_v it_o and_o again_o the_o necessicitie_n of_o it_o that_o it_o teach_v the_o way_n to_o salvation_n that_o without_o it_o ordinary_o god_n church_n be_v not_o gather_v nor_o man_n soul_n save_v that_o this_o may_v stir_v thou_o gift_n up_o to_o undertake_v the_o burden_n this_o be_v general_a but_o now_o particular_o for_o thyself_o will_v thou_o know_v whether_o god_n will_v have_v thou_o to_o go_v or_o no_o than_o thou_o must_v ask_v thy_o
