pertain_v to_o the_o preach_v of_o the_o word_n for_o such_o sing_n in_o which_o there_o be_v a_o wonderful_a sweetness_n of_o thing_n and_o of_o concord_n the_o holy_a spirit_n work_v by_o they_o do_v stir_v up_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o mind_n and_o drive_v away_o the_o idle_a wander_a and_o wicked_a cogitation_n as_o also_o the_o perturbation_n and_o sorrow_n of_o the_o heart_n that_o the_o hearer_n may_v with_o a_o more_o settle_a and_o appease_v mind_n be_v present_a at_o the_o sermon_n second_o by_o read_v of_o some_o chapter_n of_o the_o bible_n until_o the_o company_n be_v assemble_v note_v therein_o first_o the_o sum_n and_o principal_a point_n of_o the_o chapter_n second_o the_o distribution_n and_o part_n of_o it_o three_o the_o chief_a doctrine_n that_o be_v to_o eternal_a salvation_n and_o so_o glorify_v god_n both_o here_o and_o for_o ever_o it_o be_v needful_a that_o in_o he_o be_v destroy_v the_o kingdom_n of_o satan_n which_o he_o get_v by_o the_o fall_n contrary_a a_o edify_n and_o practise_v of_o faith_n and_o all_o virtue_n four_o that_o we_o may_v flee_v incredulity_n and_o vice_n and_o give_v ourselves_o to_o the_o study_n of_o faith_n and_o virtue_n it_o be_v require_v that_o we_o hate_v and_o detest_v they_o and_o love_n and_o embrace_v these_o and_o therefore_o the_o drift_n of_o all_o sermon_n be_v that_o the_o mind_n and_o heart_n take_v a_o taste_n of_o that_o i_o may_v therefore_o give_v a_o right_a farewell_n to_o this_o point_n the_o drift_n of_o all_o man_n prayer_n be_v to_o be_v so_o ground_v on_o the_o unmoveable_a rock_n of_o faith_n that_o there_o be_v no_o haesitation_n in_o he_o that_o pray_v but_o that_o he_o assure_o trust_v by_o christ_n to_o obtain_v the_o good_a thing_n he_o demand_v which_o assurance_n must_v be_v derive_v from_o these_o 3._o reason_n which_o be_v so_o strong_a against_o all_o the_o incursion_n of_o sin_n passion_n and_o all_o temptation_n and_o so_o able_a to_o affect_v the_o heart_n as_o that_o they_o can_v move_v even_o the_o stone_n 1_o reason_n god_n albeit_o he_o have_v not_o provide_v for_o man_n help_n neither_o the_o incarnation_n passion_n and_o death_n of_o his_o the_o fire_n as_o often_o as_o nothing_o hinder_v it_o burn_v and_o consume_v all_o that_o be_v put_v upon_o it_o sure_o nor_o will_v god_n so_o long_o as_o nothing_o with-stands_a he_o but_o have_v chief_a end_n in_o this_o sacrament_n but_o if_o it_o proceed_v from_o a_o impatient_a desire_n and_o violent_a love_n that_o content_v not_o itself_o in_o any_o but_o in_o the_o lord_n if_o there_o be_v purity_n of_o life_n the_o gift_n of_o prayer_n a_o evident_a profit_n by_o the_o communion_n the_o edification_n of_o other_o and_o no_o scandal_n give_v to_o other_o which_o do_v persuade_v we_o that_o these_o desire_n proceed_v from_o god_n he_o may_v then_o very_o well_o use_v it_o more_o often_o so_o that_o he_o live_v in_o such_o sort_n as_o he_o may_v be_v a_o example_n to_o other_o but_o howsoever_o either_o of_o these_o sort_n receive_v it_o let_v they_o ever_o have_v that_o of_o chrysostome_n in_o mind_n who_o shall_v we_o make_v most_o account_n of_o those_o who_o once_o or_o those_o who_o often_o or_o those_o who_o seldom_o receive_v it_o neither_o those_o who_o once_o nor_o those_o who_o often_o nor_o those_o who_o seldom_o but_o those_o that_o take_v it_o with_o a_o clean_a heart_n a_o clean_a conscience_n and_o a_o life_n unreprovable_a now_o there_o be_v two_o sort_n of_o disposition_n and_o preparation_n to_o be_v use_v in_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n the_o first_o be_v as_o it_o be_v a_o far_o off_o and_o that_o be_v no_o other_o but_o a_o holy_a life_n free_a from_o vice_n distraction_n and_o foul_a crime_n which_o do_v defile_v a_o man_n and_o make_v he_o odious_a in_o god_n sight_n for_o the_o more_o humble_a in_o heart_n pure_a in_o mind_n fervent_a in_o love_n and_o holy_a in_o life_n thou_o be_v the_o more_o worthy_o shall_v thou_o receive_v this_o sacrament_n 2._o 2._o tim._n 2._o therefore_o be_v we_o advise_v to_o cleanse_v ourselves_o from_o all_o sin_n that_o we_o may_v be_v vessel_n sanctify_v unto_o honour_n and_o ready_a unto_o of_o preparation_n be_v to_o be_v perform_v for_o a_o week_n or_o some_o such_o fit_a time_n before_o our_o receive_n of_o it_o in_o which_o time_n a_o full_a survey_n without_o partiality_n be_v take_v of_o a_o man_n life_n we_o may_v so_o give_v ourselves_o to_o prayer_n fast_v repentance_n and_o other_o holy_a duty_n that_o we_o rid_v from_o we_o the_o burden_n of_o our_o accuse_a sin_n and_o be_v furnish_v with_o faith_n hope_n love_n and_o all_o the_o troop_n of_o save_v grace_n to_o the_o end_n we_o may_v in_o some_o competent_a measure_n approach_v that_o heavenly_a banquet_n and_o to_o conclude_v with_o the_o same_o or_o more_o diligence_n which_o when_o thou_o see_v a_o woman_n paint_v and_o trim_a herself_o that_o she_o may_v appear_v to_o be_v beautiful_a to_o man_n must_v thou_o deeke_v wash_v purify_v and_o paint_v thyself_o and_o thy_o soul_n with_o inward_a grace_n that_o thou_o may_v be_v true_o beautiful_a in_o the_o eye_n of_o thy_o love_a god_n and_o if_o after_o thou_o have_v live_v a_o holy_a life_n and_o for_o some_o time_n before_o the_o communion_n also_o prepare_v thyself_o and_o that_o day_n wherein_o thou_o receive_v the_o communion_n exercise_v thyself_o in_o repentance_n and_o holy_a desire_n and_o shall_v for_o all_o this_o find_v no_o sensible_a devotion_n but_o rather_o a_o dryness_n yet_o cast_v not_o down_o thyself_o nor_o withdraw_v thyself_o from_o the_o sacrament_n for_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n work_v diverse_o in_o those_o that_o serve_v he_o the_o effect_n of_o his_o grace_n nor_o must_v any_o man_n search_v out_o the_o secret_n of_o god_n for_o they_o be_v unsearchable_a and_o past_a find_v out_o therefore_o the_o indevoute_a ought_v not_o to_o be_v drive_v from_o the_o sacrament_n whilst_o he_o live_v preparation_n but_o even_o the_o defect_n of_o give_v of_o thanks_n may_v much_o hinder_v the_o fruit_n thereof_o for_o shall_v we_o receive_v all_o those_o infinite_a benefit_n of_o his_o passion_n and_o pass_v by_o he_o unsaluted_a he_o come_v to_o hear_v our_o petition_n and_o help_v our_o misery_n and_o shall_v we_o ask_v nothing_o of_o he_o he_o enter_v most_o love_o into_o the_o inner_a chamber_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o shall_v we_o give_v he_o no_o thanks_n lest_o we_o fall_v into_o so_o great_a ingratitude_n and_o loose_v such_o a_o opportunity_n of_o profit_v sit_v like_o good_a magdalene_n at_o the_o foot_n of_o thy_o lord_n and_o saviour_n hear_v diligent_o his_o word_n he_o will_v vouchsafe_v to_o teach_v thou_o something_o speak_v to_o he_o be_v confound_v at_o thy_o own_o vility_n and_o nakedness_n and_o beg_v pardon_n for_o thy_o small_a and_o remiss_a disposition_n offer_v up_o to_o he_o thy_o body_n and_o all_o that_o belong_v unto_o thou_o a_o holy_a lyve_a and_o acceptable_a sacrifice_n lay_v open_a thy_o misery_n and_o necessity_n desire_v his_o grace_n and_o all_o the_o good_a mean_n that_o may_v further_o thou_o thereunto_o and_o exercise_v thyself_o
