transgress_v the_o law_n of_o god_n but_o sin_n that_o dwell_v in_o he_o rom._n 7.17_o and_o the_o apostle_n st._n john_n affirm_v that_o they_o who_o be_v bear_v of_o god_n sin_v not_o 1_o john_n 3.9_o and_o that_o they_o who_o be_v in_o christ_n sin_v not_o and_o that_o whosoever_o sin_v be_v of_o the_o devil_n verse_n 6_o and_o 8._o not_o that_o god_n child_n be_v exempt_v from_o all_o sin_n but_o because_o they_o sin_v not_o with_o the_o full_a consent_n and_o swinge_v of_o the●_n will_v and_o when_o they_o do_v fall_v their_o heart_n be_v defend_v with_o the_o breastplate_n of_o after_o he_o be_v endue_v with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o truth_n and_o have_v this_o godly_a endeavour_n of_o serve_v god_n he_o not_o withstand_v fell_a grievous_o many_o time_n and_o be_v wound_v often_o with_o satan_n dart_n but_o his_o wound_n be_v not_o mortal_a neither_o do_v they_o pierce_v the_o heart_n because_o he_o be_v arm_v with_o the_o breast_n plate_n of_o righteousness_n come_v we_o now_o to_o a_o three_o part_n of_o our_o christian_a armour_n which_o be_v this_o that_o we_o have_v our_o foot_n shod_a with_o the_o preparation_n of_o the_o gospel_n of_o peace_n that_o be_v we_o must_v be_v entertain_v with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o gospel_n of_o peace_n for_o it_o be_v therefore_o call_v the_o gospel_n of_o peace_n because_o it_o bring_v peace_n to_o our_o soul_n not_o only_o as_o it_o be_v the_o embassage_n of_o god_n whereby_o we_o be_v reconcile_v unto_o god_n have_v peace_n with_o he_o from_o the_o assurance_n whereof_o we_o have_v peace_n of_o conscience_n but_o also_o because_o if_o we_o be_v arm_v therewith_o we_o shall_v obtain_v a_o final_a victory_n over_o our_o spiritual_a enemy_n after_o which_o shall_v follow_v everlasting_a peace_n which_o shall_v not_o so_o much_o as_o ●e_v disturb_v with_o the_o attempt_n of_o any_o enemy_n it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a that_o we_o know_v and_o believe_v th●●_n gospel_n of_o peace_n unl●sse_v we_o be_v always_o prepare_v to_o make_v confession_n and_o profession_n thereof_o though_o thereby_o we_o incur_v worloly_a shame_n loss_n affliction_n and_o persecution_n and_o this_o the_o apostle_n signify_v by_o tell_v we_o that_o our_o foot_n must_v be_v shod_a with_o the_o preparation_n of_o the_o gospel_n of_o peace_n that_o be_v as_o those_o who_o be_v well_o shod_a be_v ready_a to_o go_v through_o rough_a and_o unpleasant_a way_n so_o those_o that_o be_v endue_v with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o gospel_n must_v always_o be_v in_o readiness_n to_o make_v profession_n thereof_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o affliction_n and_o persecution_n for_o as_o with_o the_o heart_n man_n believe_v unto_o righteousness_n so_o with_o the_o mouth_n he_o must_v confess_v unto_o salvation_n rom._n 10.10_o but_o now_o if_o we_o lie_v aside_o this_o armour_n we_o shall_v be_v as_o unfit_a to_o travel_v in_o the_o afflict_a way_n which_o lead_v to_o god_n kingdom_n as_o those_o soldier_n who_o be_v barefoot_n be_v fit_a to_o march_v through_o way_n that_o be_v full_a of_o brier_n and_o thorn_n we_o come_v now_o to_o the_o four_o piece_n of_o christian_a armour_n which_o the_o apostle_n exhort_v we_o to_o put_v on_o which_o be_v the_o shield_n of_o faith_n which_o part_n above_o all_o other_o part_n be_v most_o necessary_a because_o how_o weak_a soever_o we_o be_v in_o ourselves_o it_o do_v defend_v and_o protect_v we_o against_o all_o temptation_n of_o satan_n for_o he_o that_o put_v on_o faith_n put_v on_o jesus_n christ_n also_o it_o be_v a_o property_n inseparable_a of_o faith_n to_o apply_v unto_o we_o christ_n jesus_n and_o all_o his_o benefit_n that_o be_v his_o merit_n and_o righteousness_n and_o everlasting_a life_n itself_o let_v we_o therefore_o take_v unto_o we_o the_o shield_n of_o faith_n that_o we_o may_v also_o put_v on_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n as_o the_o apostle_n exhort_v we_o rom._n 13.14_o for_o have_v he_o we_o shall_v want_v nothing_o which_o may_v either_o defend_v ourselves_o or_o offend_v our_o enemy_n the_o lord_n himself_o will_v be_v our_o shield_n and_o buckler_n and_o therefore_o it_o will_v be_v impossible_a for_o our_o foe_n to_o prevail_v against_o we_o again_o let_v we_o further_o consider_v the_o virtue_n and_o necessity_n of_o this_o shield_n of_o faith_n the_o virtue_n whereof_o appear_v by_o its_o repel_v the_o fiery_a dart_n of_o satan_n the_o apostle_n say_v that_o thereby_o we_o may_v quench_v his_o fiery_a dart_n allude_v to_o the_o custom_n of_o soldier_n in_o ancient_a time_n who_o malicious_o poison_v their_o dart_n whereby_o the_o body_n of_o those_o that_o they_o wound_v be_v so_o inflame_v that_o they_o can_v hardly_o be_v cure_v or_o ease_v of_o their_o rage_a and_o burn_a pain_n and_o such_o dart_n be_v all_o satan_n temptation_n whereby_o we_o be_v wound_v with_o sin_n for_o if_o they_o be_v not_o repel_v and_o quench_v with_o the_o shield_n of_o faith_n they_o will_v in_o flame_n our_o lust_n to_o sin_n and_o one_o sin_n will_v inflame_v our_o heart_n to_o another_o till_o there_o be_v kindle_v in_o we_o a_o world_n of_o wickedness_n this_o we_o may_v see_v in_o the_o example_n of_o david_n who_o after_o that_o he_o give_v himself_o to_o idleness_n and_o sloth_n and_o so_o be_v pierce_v with_o one_o of_o satan_n fiery_a dart_n it_o present_o inflame_v his_o heart_n to_o commit_v adultery_n and_o have_v give_v place_n to_o that_o he_o be_v provoke_v to_o murder_v therefore_o it_o behove_v we_o to_o take_v unto_o we_o the_o shield_n of_o faith_n whereby_o we_o may_v quench_v these_o fiery_a dart_n but_o why_o do_v the_o apostle_n use_v this_o unproper_a speech_n see_v the_o shield_n of_o faith_n do_v not_o quench_v but_o repel_v the_o dart_n that_o beat_v upon_o it_o i_o answer_v partly_o to_o show_v the_o nature_n of_o our_o enemy_n temptation_n namely_o that_o they_o be_v f●ery_o mortal_a rage_a and_o pernicious_a and_o partly_o to_o set_v forth_o a_o double_a virtue_n of_o faith_n for_o first_o thereby_o we_o repel_v and_o beat_v back_o his_o temptation_n and_o so_o resist_v he_o steadfast_a in_o the_o ●aith_n 1_o pet._n
