GReat and manifold were the blessings most dread Sovereign which Almighty God the Father of all mercies bestowed upon us the people of England when first he sent Your Majesties Royal Person to rule and reign over us For whereas it was the expectation of many who wished not well unto our Sion that upon the setting of that bright Occidental Star Qu. Elizabeth of most happy memory some thick and palpable clouds of darkness would so have overshadowed this land that men should have been in doubt which way they were to walk and that it should hardly be known who was to direct the unsettled State the appearance of Your Majesty as of the Sun in his strength instantly dispelled those supposed and surmised mists and gave unto all that were well affected exceeding cause of comfort especially when we beheld the Government established in Your Highness and Your hopeful Seed by an undoubted Title and this also accompanted with peace and tranquility at home and abroad But amongst all our joys there was no one that more filled our hearts then the blessed continuance of the Preaching of Gods sacred Word amongst us which is that inestimable treasure which excelleth all the riches of the earth because the fruit thereof extendeth it self not onely to the time spent in this transitory world but directeth and disposeth men unto that eternal happiness which is above in heaven Then not to suffer this to fall to the ground but rather to take it up and to continue it in that state wherein the famous Predecessour of Your Highness did leave it nay to go forward with the confidence and resolution of a man in maintaining the truth of Christ and propagating it far and near is that which hath so bound and firmly knit the hearts of all Your Majesties loyal and religious people unto You that Your very name is precious among them their eye doth behold You with comfort and they bless You in their hearts as that sanctified Person who under God is the immediate Authour of their true happiness And this their contentment doth not diminish or decay but every day increaseth and taketh strength when they observe that the zeal of Your Majesty toward the house of God doth not flack or go backward but is more and more kindled manifesting it self abroad in the furthest parts of Christendom by writing in defence of the Truth which hath given such a blow unto that man of sin as will not be healed and every day at home by religious and learned discourse by frequenting the house of God by hearing the Word preached by cherishing the Teachers thereof by caring for the Church as a most tender and loving nursing Father There are infinite Arguments of this right Christian and religious affection in Your Majesty but none is more forcible to declare it to others then the vehement and perpetuated desire of the accomplishing and publishing of this work which now with all humility we present unto Your Majesty For when Your Highness had once out of deep judgement apprehended how convenient it was that out of the original sacred Tongues together with comparing of the Labours both in our own and other foreign Languages of many worthy men who went before us there should be one more exact Translation of the holy Scriptures into the English tongue Your Majesty did never desist to urge and to excite those to whom it was commended that the Work might be hastned and that the business might be expedited in so decent a manner as a matter of such importance might justly require And now at last by the mercy of God and the continuance of our Labours it being brought unto such a conclusion as that we have great hope the Church of England shall reap good fruit thereby we hold it our duty to offer it to Your Majesty not onely as to our King and Sovereign but as to the principal Mover and Authour of the Work Humbly craving of Your most sacred Majesty that since things of this quality have ever been subject to the censures of ill-meaning and discontented persons it may receive approbation and patronage from so learned and judicious a Prince as Your Highness is whose allowance and acceptance of our Labors shall more honour and encourage us then all the calumniations and hard interpretations of other men shall dismay us So that if on the one side we shall be traduced by Popish persons at home or abroad who therefore will malign us because we are poor instruments to make Gods holy Truth to be yet more and more known unto the people whom they desire still to keep in ignorance and darkness or if on the other side we shall be maligned by self-conceited brethren who run their own ways and give liking unto nothing but what is framed by themselves and hammered on their anvile we may rest secure supported within by the truth and innocency of a good conscience having walked the ways of simplicity and integrity as before the Lord And sustained without by the powerfull protection of Your Majesties Grace and Favour which will ever give countenance to honest and Christian endeavours against bitter censures and uncharitable imputations The Lord of heaven and earth bless Your Majesty with many and happy days that as his heavenly hand hath enriched Your Highness with many singular and extraordinary graces so You may be the wonder of the world in this latter age for happiness and true LXXXV 1 The psalmist out of the experience of former mercies prayeth for the continuance thereof 8 He promiseth to wait thereon out of confidence of Gods goodness ¶ To the chief musician A psalm ‖ Or of for the sons of Korah LORD thou hast been ‖ Or well pleased favourable unto thy land thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob. 2 * Psal 32.1 Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people thou hast covered all their sin Selah 3 Thou hast taken away all thy wrath ‖ Or thou hast turned thine anger from waxing hot thou hast turned thy self from the fierceness of thine anger 4 Turn us O God of our salvation and cause thine anger towards us to cease 5 Wilt thou be angry with us for ever wilt thou draw out thine anger to all generations 6 Wilt thou not revive us again that thy people may rejoyce in thee 7 Shew us thy mercy O LORD and grant us thy salvation 8 I will hear what God the LORD will speak for he will speak peace unto his people and to his saints but let them not turn again to folly 9 Surely his salvation is nigh them that fear him that glory may dwell in our land 10 Mercy and truth are met together righteousness and peace have kissed each other 11 Truth shall spring out of the earth and righteousness shall look down from heaven 12 Yea the LORD shall give that which is good and our land shall yeeld her increase 13 Righteousness shall go before him and shall set us in the way of his steps PSAL. XIII 1 Keep not company with the proud or a michtier then thy self 15 Like will to like 21 The difference between the rich and the poor 25 A mans bea rt will change his countenance HE that toucheth pitch shall be defiled therewith and * Deu. 7.2 he that hath fellowship with a proud man shall be like unto him 2. Burden not thyself abovethy power while thou livest and have no fellowship with one that is mightier and richer then thy self For how agree the kettle and the earthen pot together † Gr. this shall smite against it and be broken for if the one besmitten against the other it shall be broken 3 The rich man hath done wrong and yet he threatneth withal the poor is wronged and he must intreat also 4 If thou be for his profit he will use thee but if thou have nothing he will forsake thee 5 If thou have any thing he will live with thee yea he will make thee bare and will not be sorry for it 6 If he have need of thee he will deceive thee and smile upon thee and put thee in hope he will speak thee fair and say What wantest thou 7 And he will shame thee by his meats until he have drawn thee dry twice or thrice and at the last he will laugh thee to scorn afterward when he seeth thee he will forsake thee and shake his head at thee 8 Beware that thou be not deceived and brought down † Or by thy sonplicity in thy jollity 9 If thou he invited of a mighty man withdraw thy self and so much the more will he invite thee 10 Press thou not upon him lest thou be put back stand not far off lest thou be forgotten 11 ‖ Or forbear not Affect not to be made equal unto him in talk ‖ Or but. and beleeve not his many words for with much communication will he tempt thee and smiling upon thee will get out thy secrets 12 But cruelly he will lay up thy words and will not spare to do thee hurt and to put thee in prison 13 Observe take good heed for thou walkest in peril of thy overthrowing when thou hearest these things awake in thy sleep 14 Love the Lord all thy life and call upon him for thy salvation 15 Every beast loveth his like and every man loveth his neighbour 16 All flesh consorteth according to kinde and a man will cleave to his like 17 What fellowship hath the wolf with the lamb so the sinner with the godly 18 What agreement is there between the hyena and a dog and what peace between the rich and the poor 19 As the wilde ass is the lions prey in the wilderness so the rich eat up the poor 20 As the proud hate humility so doth the rich abhor the poor 21 A rich man beginning to fall is held up of his friends but 〈◊〉 poor man being down is thrust also away by his friends 22 When a rich man is faln he hath many helpers he speaketh things not to bespoken and yet men justifie him the poor man slipt and yet they rebuked him too he spake wisely and could have no place 23 When a rich man speaketh every man holdeth his tongue and look what he saith they extoll it to the clouds but if the poor man speak they say What fellow is this and if he stumble they will help to overthrow him 24 Riches are good unto him that hath no sin and poverty is evil in the mouth of the ungodly 25 The heart of a man changeth his countenance whether it be for good or evil and a merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance 26 A cheerful countenance is a token of a heart that is in prosperity and the finding out of parables is a wer isom labour of the minde CHAP. XIV 1 A good conscience maketh men happy 5 The niggard doeth good to none 13 But do thou good 20 Men are happy that draw near to wisdom * Ch. 19.16 25.8 Jam. 3.2 BLessed is the man that hath not slipt with his mouth and is not pricked with the ‖ Or sorrow multitude of sins 2 Blessed is he whose conscience hath not condemned him and who is not faln from his hope in the Lord. 3 Riches are not comely for a niggard and what should an envious man do with money 4 He that gathereth by defrauding his own soul gathereth for others that shall spend his goods riotously 5 He that is evil to himself to whom will he be good he shall not take pleasure in his goods 6 There is none worse then he that envieth himself and this is a recompence of his wickedness 7 And if he doeth good he doeth it unwillingly and at the last he will declare his wickedness 8 The envious man hath a wicked eye he turneth away his sace and despiseth men 9 A * Prov. 27. ●● covetous mans eye is not satisfied with his portion and the iniquity of the wicked drieth up his soul 10 A wicked eye envieth his bread and he is a niggard at his table 11 My son according to thy ability do good to thy self and give the Lord his due offering 12 Remember that death will not be long in coming and that the covenant of the grave is not shewed unto thee 13 * Tob. 4.7 Luk. 14 1● Do good unto thy friend before thou die and according to thy ability stretch out thy hand and give to him 14 Defraud not thy self of † Or the feast-day the good day and let not the part of a good desire overpass thee 15 Shalt thou not leave thy travels unto another and thy labour to be divided by lot 16 Give and take and sanctifie thy soul for there is no seeking of dainties in the grave 17 * Isa 40.6 Jam. 1.10.1 Pet. 1.24 All flesh waxeth old as a garment for the covenant from the beginning is Thou shalt die the death 18 As of the green leaves on a thick tree some fall and some grow so is the generation of flesh and bloud one cometh to an end and another is born 19 Every work rotteth and consumeth away and the worker thereof shall go withal 20 * Psal 1.2 Blessed is the man that doth meditate good things in wisdom and that reasoneth of holy things by his understanding 21 He that considereth her ways in his heart shall also have understanding in her secrets 22 Go after her as one that traceth and lie in wait in her ways 23 He that prieth in at her windows shall also hearken at her doors 24 He that doth lodge near her house shall also fasten a ‖ Or stake pin in her walls 25 He shall pitch his tent nigh unto her and shall lodge in a lodging where good things are 26 He shall set his children under her shelter and shall lodge under her branches 27 By her he shall be covered from heat and in her glory shall he dwell CHAP.
21.19 I had rather dwell with a lion and a dragon then to keep house with a wicked woman 17 The wickedness of a woman changeth her face and darkeneth her countenance ‖ Or like a bea● like sackcloth 18 Her husband shall sit among his neighbours and when he heareth it shall sigh bitterly 19 All wickedness is but little to the wickedness of a woman let the portion of a sinner fall upon her 20 As the climbing of a sandy way is to the feet of the aged so is a wife * Or scolding full of words to a quiet man 21 * 2 Sam. 11.2 Ch. 42 1● Stumble not at the beauty of a woman and desire her not for pleasure 22 A woman if she maintain her husband is full of anger impudency and much reproach 23 A wicked woman abateth the courage maketh an heavi● countenance and a wounded heart a woman that will not comfort her husband in distress maketh weak hands and feeble knees 24 Of * Gen ● ● 1 Tim. 2.14 the woman came the beginning of sin and through her we all die 25 Give the water no passage neither a wicked woman liberty to gad abroad 26 If she go not as thou wouldest have her cut her off from thy flesh and give her a bill of divorce and let her go CHAP. XXVI 1 A good wife 4 and a good conscience do glad men 6 A wicked wife is a fearful thing 13 Of good and bad wives 28 Of three things that are grievous 29 Merehants and buksters are not without sin BLessed is the man that hath a vertuous wife for the number of his days shall be double 2 A vertuous woman rejoyceth her husband and he shall fulfil the years of his life in peace 3 A good wife is a good portion which shall be given in the portion of them that fear the Lord. 4 Whether a man be rich or poor if he have a good heart toward the Lord he shall at all times rejoyce with a cheerful countenance 5 There be three things that mine heart feareth and for the fourth I was sore afraid † Gr. an evil report the slander of a city the gathering together of an unruly multitude and a false accusation all these are worse then death 6 But a grief of heart sorrow is a woman that is jealous over another woman a scourge of the tongue which communicateth with all 7 An evil wife is ‖ Or a yoke of o●en a yoke shaken to and fro he that hath hold of her is as though he held a scorpion 8 A drunken woman and a gadder abroad causeth great anger and she will not cover her own shame 9 The whoredom of a woman may be known in her haughty looks and eye-lids 10 * Chap. 42.11 If thy daughter be shameless keep her in straitly lest she abuse herself through overmuch liberty 11 Watch over an impudent eye and marvel not if she trespass against thee 12 She will open her mouth as a thirsty traveller when he hath found a fountain and drink of every water near her by every ‖ Or stake hedge will she sit down and open her quiver against ever● arrow 13 The grace of a wife delighteth her husband and her discretion will fat his bones 14 A silent and loving woman is a gift of the Lord and there is nothing so much worth as a minde well instructed 15 A shamefac●d and faithful woman is a double grace and her continent minde cannot be valued 16 As the sun when it ariseth † Gr. in the highest places of the Lord. in the high heaven so is the beauty of a good wife in the ‖ Or ornament ordering of her house 17 As the clear light is upon the holy candlestick so is the beauty of the face ‖ Or in constant age in ripe age 18 As the golden pillars are upon the sockets of silver so are the ‖ Or comely fair feet with a constant ‖ Or breast heart 19 My son keep the flower of thine age sound and give not thy strength to strangers 20 When thou hast gotten a fruitful possession through all the field sowe it with thine own seed trusting in the goodness of thy stock 21 So thy race which thou leavest shall be magnified having the confidence of their good descent 22 An harlot shall be accounted as ‖ Or a swin● spittle but a married woman is a towre against death to her husband 23 A wicked woman is given as a portion to a wicked man but a godly woman is given to him that feareth the Lord. 24 A dishonest woman contemneth shame but an honest woman will reverence her husband 25 A shameless woman shall be counted as a dog but she that is shamefac'd will fear the Lord. 26 A woman that honoureth her husband shall be judged wise of all but she that dishonoureth him in her pride-shall be counted ungodly of all 27 A loud-crying woman and a scold shall be sought out to drive away the enemies 28 There be two things that grieve my heart and the third maketh me angry a man of war that suffereth poverty and men of understanding that are not set by and one that returneth from righteousness to sin the Lord prepareth such an one for the sword 29 A merchant shall hardly keep himself from doing wrong and an huckster shall not be freed from sin CHAP. XXVII 1 Of sins in selling and buying 7 Our speech will tell what is in us 16 A friend is lest by discovering his secrets 25 He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it MAny * Prov. 28.21 have sinned for ‖ Or a thing indifferent a small matter and he that * Pro. 23.4 1 Tim. 6.9 seeketh for abundance will turn his eyes away 2 As a nail sticketh fast between the joynings of the stones so doth sin stick close between buying and selling 3 Unless a man hold himself diligently in the fear of the Lord his house shall soon be overthrown 4 As when one sifteth with a sieve the refuse remaineth so the filth of man in his ‖ Or thought talk 5 * Prov. 27.21 The furnace proveth the potters vessels so the trial of man is in his reasoning 6 * Mat. 7.17 The fruit declareth if the tree have been dressed so is the utterance of a conceit in the heart of man 7 Praise no man before thou hearest him speak for this is the trial of men 8 If thou followest righteousness thou shalt obtain her and put her on as a glorious long robe 9 The birds will resort unto their like so will truth return unto them that practise in her 10 As the lion lieth in wait for the prey so sin for them that work iniquity 11 The discourse of a godly man is always with wisdom but a fool changeth as the moon 12 If thou be among the ●ndiscreet observe the time but be continually among men of
that light being led by the hand of them that were with me I came into Damascus 12 And one Ananias a devout man according to the law having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there 13 Came unto me and stood and said unto me Brother Saul receive thy sight And the same hour I looked up upon him 14 And he said The God of our fathers hath chosen thee that thou shouldest know his will and see that just one and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth 15 For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard 16 And now why tarriest thou arise and be baptized and wash away thy sins calling on the name of the Lord. 17 And it came to pass that when I was come again to Jerusalem even while I prayed in the temple I was in a trance 18 And saw him laying unto me Make haste and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me 19 And I said Lord they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that beleeved on thee 20 * Chap. 7.58 And when the bloud of thy martyr Stephen was shed I also was standing by and consenting unto his death and kept the raiment of them that slew him 21 And he said unto me Depart for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles 22 And they gave him audience unto this word and then lift up their voices and said Away with such a fellow from the earth for it is not sit that he should live 23 And as they cried out and cast off their clothes and threw dust into the air 24 The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle and bade that he should be examined by scourging that he might know wherefore they cried so against him 25 And as they bound him with thongs Paul said unto the centurion that stood by Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman and uncondemned 26 When the centurion heard that he went and told the chief captain saying Take heed what thou doest for this man is a Roman 27 Then the chief captain came and said unto him Tell me art thou a Roman He said Yea. 28 And the chief captain answered With a great sum obtained I this freedom And Paul said But I was free-born 29 Then straightway they departed from him which should have ‖ Or tortured him examined him and the chief captain also was afraid after he knew that he was a Roman and because he had bound him 30 On the morrow because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews he loosed him from his hands and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear and brought Paul down and set him before them CHAP. XXIII 3 As Paul pleadeth his cause 2 Ananias commandeth them to smite him 7 Dissension among his accusers 11 God encourageth him 14 The Jews laying wait for Paul 20 is declared unto the chief captain 27 He sendeth him to Felix the governour ANd Paul earnestly beholding the council said Men and brethren I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day 2 And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth 3 Then said Paul unto him God shall smite thee thou whited wall for fittest thou to judge me after the law and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law 4 And they that stood by said Revilest thou Gods high priest 5 Then said Paul I wilt not brethren that he was the high priest For it is written * Exod. 22.28 Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people 6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees he cried out in the council Men and brethren * Phil. 3.5 I am a Pharisee the son of a Pharisee * Ch. 24.21 of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question 7 And when he had so said There arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees and the multitude was divided 8 * Mat. 22.23 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection neither angel nor spirit but the Pharisees confess both 9 And there arose a great cry and the scripes that were of the Pharisees part arose and strove saying We finde no evil in this man but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him let us not fight against God 10 And when there arose a great dissension the chief captain fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them commanded the souldiers to go down and to take him by force from among them and to bring him into the castle 11 And the night following the Lord stood by him and said Be of good cheer Paul for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem so must thou bear witness also at Rome 12 And when it was day certain of the Jews banded together and bound themselves ‖ Or with an oath of execration under a curse saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul 13 And they were more then fourty which had made this conspiracy 14 And they came to the chief priests and elders and said We have bound our selves under a great curse that we will eat nothing till we have slain Paul 15 Now therefore ye with the council signifie to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to morrow as though ye would enquire something more perfectly concerning him and we or ever he come near are ready to kill him 16 And when Pauls sisters son heard of their lying in wait he went and entred into the castle and told Paul 17 Then Paul called one of the centurions unto him and said Bring this young man unto the chief captain for he hath a certain thing to tell him 18 So he took him and brought him to the chief captain and said Paul the prisoner called me unto him and prayed me to bring this young man unto thee who hath something to say unto thee 19 Then the chief captain took him by the hand and went with him aside privately and asked him What is that thou hast to tell me 20 And he said the Jews have agreed to desire thee that thou wouldest bring down Paul to morrow into the council as though they would enquire somewhat of him more perfectly 21 But do not thou yeeld unto them for there lie in wait for him of them mo then fourty men which have bound themselves with an oath that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him and now are they ready looking for a promise from thee 22 So the chief captain then let the young man depart and charged him See thou tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me 23 And he called unto him two centurions saying Make ready two hundred souldiers
For * Wis 63. there is no power but of God the powers that be are ‖ Or ordered ordained of God 2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power resisteth the ordinance of God and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation 3 For rulers are not a terrour to good works but to the evil Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power do that which is good and thou shalt have praise of the same 4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good But if thou do that which is evil be afraid for he beareth not the sword in vain for he is the minister of God a revenger to execute wrath upon him the doeth evil 5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject not onely for wrath but also for conscience sake 6 For for this cause pay you tribute also for they are Gods ministers attending continually upon this very thing 7 * Mat. 22.21 Render therefore to all their dues tribute to whom tribute is due custom to whom custom fear to whom fear honour to whom honour 8 Owe no man any thing but to love one another for he that ●oveth another hath fulfilled the law 9 For this * Ex. 20. Thou shalt not commit adultery Thou shalt not kill thou shalt not steal Thou shalt not bear false witness Thou shalt not covet if there be any other commandment it is briefly comprehended in this saying namely * Lev. 19.18 Mat. 22 39 Gal. 5.14 Jam. 2.8 Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thy self 10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour therefore love is the fulfilling of the law 11 And that knowing the time that now it is high time to awake out of sleep for now is our salvation nearer then when we beleeved 12 The night is far spent the day is at hand let us therefore cast off the works of darkness and let us put on the armour of light 13 Let us walk ‖ Or decently honestly as in the day * Lu. 21.34 not in rioting and drunkenness not in chambering and wantonness not in strife and envying 14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ and * Gal. 5.16 1 Pet. 2.12 make not provision for the flesh to fulfil the lusts thereof CHAP. XV. 1 The strong must hear with the weak 2 We may not please our selves 3 for Christ did not so 7 but receive one the other as Christ did us all 8 both Jews 9 and Gentiles 15 Paul excuseth his writing 28 and promiseth to see them 30 and requesteth their prayers WE then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak and not to please our selves 2 Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification 3 For even Christ pleased not himself but as it is written * Psal 69.9 The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me 4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope 5 * 1 Cor. 1.10 Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be like-minded one towards another ‖ Or after the example of according to Christ Jesus 6 That ye may with one minde and one mouth glorifie God even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ 7 Wherefore receive ye one another as Christ also received us to
the Spirit 6 Therefore we are always confident knowing that whilest we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord 7 For we walk by faith not by sight 8 We are confident I say and willing rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. 9 Wherefore we ‖ Or endeavour labour that whether present or absent we may be accepted of him 10 * Rom. 14.10 For we must all appear before the judgement seat of Christ that every one may receive the things done in his body according to that he hath done whether it be good or bad 11 Knowing therefore the terrour of the Lord we perswade men but we are made manifest unto God and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences 12 For we commend not our selves again unto you but give you occasion to glory on our behalf that you may have somewhat to answer them which glory † Gr. in the face in appearance and not in heart 13 For whether we be besides our selves it is to God or whether we be sober it is for your cause 14 For the love of Christ constraineth us because we thus judge that if one died for all then were all dead 15 And that he died for all that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves but unto him which died for them and rose again 16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh yea though we have known Christ after the flesh yet now henceforth know we him no more 17 Therefore if any man be in Christ ‖ Or let him be he is a new creature * Isa 43.19 Rev. 21.5 old things are past away behold all things are become new 18 And all things are of God who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ and hath given to us the ministery of reconciliation 19 To wit that God was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself not imputing their trespasses unto them and hath † Gr. put in us committed unto us the word of reconciliation 20 Now then we are ambassadours for Christ as though God did beseech you by us we pray you in Christs stead be ye reconciled to God 21 For he hath made him to be sin for us who knew no sin that we might be made the righteousness of God in him CHAP. VI. That he hath approved himself a faithful minister of Christ both by his exhortations 3 and by integrity of life 4 and by patient enduving all kinds of affliction and disgraces for the gospel 10 Of which he speaketh the more boldly amongst them because his heart is open to them 13 and he expecteth the like affection from them again 14 exhorting to flee the society and pollution of idolaters as being themselves temples of the living God WE then as workers together with him beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain 2 For he saith * Isa 49.8 I have heard thee in a time accepted and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee behold now is the accepted time behold now is the day of salvation 3 * 1 Cor. 10.32 Giving no offence in any thing that the ministery be not blamed 4 But in all things † Gr. commending approving our selves as the ministers of God in much patience in afflictions in necessities in distresses 5 In stripes in imprisonments ‖ Or ●n tossings ●o and fro in tumults in labours in watchings in fastings 6 By pureness by knowledge by long-suffering by kindness by the holy Ghost by love unfeigned 7 By the word of truth by the power of God by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left 8 By honour and dishonour by evil report and good report as deceivers and yet true 9 As unknown and yet well known as dying and behold we live as chastened and not killed 10 As sorrowful yet alway rejoycing as poor yet making many rich as having nothing and yet possessing all things 11 O ye Corinthians our mouth is open unto you our heart is enlarged 12 Ye are not straitned in us but ye are straitned in your own bowels 13 Now for a recompence in the same I speak as unto my children be ye also enlarged 14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbeleevers for what fellow●hip hath righteousness with unrighteousness and what communion hath light with darkness 15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial or what part hath he that beleeveth with an infidel 16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols for * 1 Cor. 3.16 ye are the temple of the living God as God hath said * Levit. 26.12 I will dwell in them and walk in them and I will be their God and they shall be my people 17 * Isa 52.11 Wherefore come out from among them and be ye separate saith the Lord and touch not the unclean thing and I will receive you 18 * Jer. 31.1 And will be a father unto you and ye shall be my sons and daughters saith the Lord Almighty CHAP. VII 1 He proceedeth in exhorting them to purity of life 2 and to bear him like affection as he doth to them 3 Whereof lest he might seem to doubt he declareth what comfort he took in his afflictions by the report which Titus gave of their godly sorrow which his former epistle had wrought in th●m 13 and of their loving kindness and obedience towards Titus answerable to his former boastings of them HAving therefore these promises dearly beloved let us cleanse our selves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit perfecting holiness in the fear of God 2 Receive us we have wronged no man we have corrupted no man we have defrauded no man 3 I speak not this to condemn you for I have said before that you are in our hearts to die and live with you 4 Great is my boldness of speech toward you great is my glorying of you I am filled with comfort I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation 5 For when we were come into Macedonia our flesh had no rest but we were troubled on every side without were fightings within were fears 6 Nevertheless God that comforteth those that are cast down comforted us by the coming of Titus 7 And not by his coming onely but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you when he told us your earnest desire your mourning your fervent minde toward me so that I rejoyced the more 8 For though I made you sorry with a letter I do not repent though I did repent for I perceive that the same epistle made you sorry though it were but for a season 9 Now I rejoyce not that you were made sorry but that ye sorrowed to repentance for ye were made sorry ‖ Or according to God after a godly manner that you might receive damage by us in nothing 10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance
of other mens sins keep thy self pure 23 Drink no longer water but use a little wine for thy stomachs sake and thine often infirmities 24 Some mens sins are open before-hand going before to judgement and some men they follow after 25 Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand and they that are otherwise cannot be hid CHAP. VI. 1 Of the duty of servants 3 Not to have fellowship with new-fangled teachers 6 Godliness is great gain and love of money the root of all evil 11 What Timothy is to flee and what to follow 17 and whereof to admonish the rich 20 To keep the purity of true doctrine and to avoid profane janglings LEt as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed 2 And they that have beleeving masters let them not despise them because they are brethren but rather do them service because they are ‖ Or beleeving faithful and beloved partakers of the benefit These things teach and exhort 3 If any man teach otherwise and consent not to wholesom words even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ and to the doctrine which is according to godliness 4 He is ‖ Or a fool proud knowing nothing but if doting about questions strifes of words whereof cometh envy strife railings evil surmisings 5 ‖ Or sick Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth supposing that gain is godliness from such withdraw thy self 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain 7 For we brought nothing into this world and it is certain we can carry nothing out 8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content 9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare and into many foolish and hurtful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil which while some coveted after they have ‖ Or been seduced erred from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows 11 But thou O man of God flee these things and follow after righteousness godliness faith love patience meekness 12 Fight the good fight of faith lay hold on eternal life whereunto thou art also called and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses 13 I give thee charge in the sight of God who quickneth all things and before Christ Jesus who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good ‖ Or profession confession 14 That thou keep this commandment without spot unrebukeable until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ 15 Which in his times he shall shew who is the blessed and onely Potentate * Rev. 1● 4 19.16 the King of kings and Lord of lords 16 Who onely hath immortality dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto * John 1.18 1 John 4 12. whom no man hath seen nor can see to whom be honour and power everlasting Amen 17 Charge them that are rich in this world that they be not high-minded nor trust in † Gr. uncertainty of riches uncertain riches but in the living God who giveth us richly all things to enjoy 18 That they do good that they be rich in good works ready to distribute ‖ Or sociable willing to communicate 19 * Matth. 6.20 Luke 12.32 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come that they may lay hold on eternal life 20 O Timothy keep that which is committed to thy trust avoiding profane and vain babblings and oppositions of science falsly so called 21 Which some professing have erred concerning the faith Grace be with thee Amen ¶ The first to Timothy was written from Laodicea which is the chiefest city of Phrygia Paca●iana ¶ The second epistle of PAUL the Apostle to TIMOTHY CHAP. I. Pauls love to Timothy and the unfeigned faith which was in Timothy himself his mother and grandmother 6 He is exhorted to stir up the gift of God which was in him 8 to be stedfast and patient in persecution 13 and to persist in the form and truth of that doctrine which he had learned of him 15 Phygellus and Hermogenes and such like are noted and Onesiphorus is highly commended PAul an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus 2 To Timothy my dearly beloved son● Grace mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 3 I thank God whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day 4 Greatly dearing to see thee being mindful of thy tears that I may be filled with joy 5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois and thy mother Eunice and I am perswaded that in thee also 6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God which is in thee by the putting on of my hands 7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound minde 8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord nor of me his prisoner but he thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God 9 Who hath saved us and called us with an holy calling * Tit. 3.3 not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace which was given us in Christ Jesus * Eph. 1.4 Tit. 1.2 before the world began 10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ who hath abolished death and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel 11 * 1 Tim. 2.7 Whereunto I am appointed a preacher and an apostle and a teacher of the Gentiles 12 For the which cause I also suffer these things nevertheless I am not ashamed for I know whom I have ‖ Or trusted beleeved and I am perswaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day 13 Hold fast the form of sound words which thou hast heard of me in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus 14 That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the holy Ghost which dwelleth in us 15 This thou knowest that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes 16 The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus for he oft refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chain 17 But when he was in Rome he sought me out very diligently and found me 18 The Lord grant unto him that he may finde mercy of the Lord in that day And in how many things he ministred unto me at Ephesus thou knowest very well CHAP. II. 1 He is exhorted again to constaney and
tabernacle which is called the holiest of all 4 Which had the golden censer and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold wherein was * Ex. 16.34 the golden pot that had manna and * Num. 17.16 A●rons rod that budded and * Deut. 10.5 1 King 8.9 〈◊〉 Chr. 5.10 the tables of the covenant 5 And * Ex. 25.22 over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercy-seat of which we cannot now speak particularly 6 Now when these things were thus ordained the priests went always into the first tabernacle accomplishing the service of God 7 But into the second went the high priest alone * Ex. 30.10 ●ev 16. 〈◊〉 once every year not without bloud which he offered for himself and for the errours of the people 8 The holy Ghost this signifying that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest while as the first tabernacle was yet standing 9 Which was a sigure for the time then present in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices that could not make him that did the service perfect as pertaining to the conscience 10 Which stood onely in meats and drinks and divers washings and carnal ‖ Or vitor ceremonies ordinances imposed on them until the time of reformation 11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come by a greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands that is to say not of this building 12 Neither by the bloud of goats and calves but by his own bloud he entred in once into the holy place having obtained eternal redemption f●r us 13 For it * Lev. 1● 14 the bloud of bulls and of goats and * 1 Num. 19.17 c. the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh 14 How much more shall the bloud of Christ who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without ‖ Or fault spot to God purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God 15 And for this cause he is the Mediatour of the new testament that by means of death for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance 16 For where a testament is there must also of necessity ‖ Or be brought in be the death of the testatour 17 For a testament is of force after men are dead otherwise it is of no strength at all whilest the testatour liveth 18 Whereupon neither the first testament was ‖ Or purified dedicated without bloud 19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law he took the bloud of calves and of goats with water and ‖ Or purple scarlet wooll and hyssop and sprinkled both the book and all the people 20 Saying * E● 24.8 This is the bloud of the testament which God hath enjoyned unto you 21 Moreover he sprinkled likewise with bloud both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministery 22 And almost all things are by the law purged with bloud and without shedding of bloud is no remission 23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices then these 24 For Christ is not entred into the holy places made with hands which are the figures of the true but into heaven it self now * 1 Joh. 2.1 to appear in the presence of God for us 25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often as the high priest entreth into the holy place every year with bloud of others 26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself 27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die but after this the judgement 28 So * 1 Pet. 3.18 Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation CHAP. X. 1 The weakness of the law-sacrifices 10 The sacrifice of Christs body once offered 14 for ever hath taken away sins 19 An exhortation to hold fast the faith with patience and thanksgiving FOr the law having a shadow of good things to come and not the very image of the things can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins 3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year 4 For it is not possible that the bloud of bulls and of goats should take away sins 5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world he saith * Psal 10.6 c. Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not but a body ‖ Or thou ●●st fitted me hast thou prepared me 6 In burnt-offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure 7 Then said I Lo I come In the volume of the book it is written of me to do thy will O God 8 Above when he said Sacrifice and offering and barnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not neither hadst pleasure therein which are offered by the law 9 Then said he Lo I come to do thy will O God He taketh away the first that he may establish the second 10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all 11 And every priest standeth daily ministring and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices which can never take away sins 12 But this man after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever sat down on the right hand of God 13 From henceforth expecting * Psal 11● 1. 1 Cor. 15.25 Chap. 1.13 till his enemies be made his footstool 14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified 15 Whereof the holy Ghost also is a witness to us for after that he had said before 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days saith the Lord I will * Jer. 31.33 put my laws into their hearts and in their minds will I write them 17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more 18 Now where remission of these is there is no more offering for sin 19 Having therefore brethren ‖ Or liberty boldness to enter into the holiest by the bloud of Jesus 20 By a new and living way which he hath ‖ Or new m●d● consecrated for us through the vail that is to say his flesh 21 And having an high priest over the house of God 22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and
them that are in bonds as bound with them and them which suffer adversity as being your selves also in the body 4 Marriage is honourable in all and the bed undefiled but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge 5 Let your conversation be without covetousness and be content with such things as ye have for he hath said * Deut. 31.8 Josh 1.5 I will never leave thee nor forsake thee 6 So that we may boldly say * Psal 56.4 11. and 118.6 The Lord is my hesper and I will not fear what man shall do unto me 7 Remember them which ‖ Or are the guides have the rule over you who have spoken unto you the word of God whose faith follow considering the end of their conversation 8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday and to day and for ever 9 Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines for it is a good thing that the heart be established with gracy not with meats which have not profited them that have been occupied therein 10 We have an altar whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tab●rna●le 11 For * Levit. 14.11.12 and 6.30 and 16.27 the bodies of those beasts whose bloud is brought into the sanetuary by the high priest for sin are burnt without the camp 12 Wherefore Jesus also that he might sanct he the people with his own bloud suffered without the gate 13 Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp bearing his reproach 14 * Mic 2.10 For here have we no continuing city but we seek one to come 15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually that is * Hos 14.2 the fruit of our lips † Gr. confessing to Pais 〈◊〉 .18 giving thanks to his name 16 But to do good and to communicate forget not for * 1 Thes 5.12 with such sacrifices God is well pleased 17 * Obey them that ‖ Or guide have the rule over you submit your selves for they watch for your souls as they that must give account that they may do it with joy and not with grief for that is unprofitable for you 18 Pray for us for we trust we have a good conscience in all things willing to live honestly 19 But I beseech you the rather to do this that I may be restored to you the sooner 20 Now the God of peace that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus that great shepherd of the sheep through the bloud of the everlasting ‖ Or testament covenant 21 Make you perfect in every good work to do his will ‖ Or doing working in you that which is well-pleasing in his sight through Jesus Christ to whom be glory for ever and ever Amen 22 And I beseech you brethren suffer the word of exhortation for I have written a letter unto you in few words 23 Know ye that our brother Timothy is set at liberty with whom if he come shortly I will see you 24 Salute all them that have the rule over you and all the saints They of Italy salute you 25 Grace be with you all Amen ¶ Written to the Hebrews from Italy by Timothy ¶ The general epistle of S. JAMES CHAP. 1. We are to rejoyce under the cross 5 to ask patience of God 13 and in our trials not to impute our weakness or sins unto him 19 but rather to bearken to the word to meditate in it and to do thereafter 26 otherwise men may seem but never be truly religious JAmes a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad greeting 2 My brethren count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations 3 * Rom. 5.3 Knowing this that the trying of your faith worketh patience 4 But let patience have her perfect work that ye may be perfect and entire wanting nothing 5 If any of you lack wisdom * Matth. 7.7 let him ask of God that giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not and it shall be given him 6 But let him ask in faith nothing wavering for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed 7 For let not that man think the he shall receive any thing of the Lord. 8 A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways 9 Let the brother of low degree ‖ Or glory rejoyce in that he is exalted 10 But the rich in that he is made low because * Isa 40.6 1 Pet. 1.24 as the flower of the grass he shall pass away 11 For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat but it withereth the grass and the flower thereof falleth and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways 12 * Job 5.17 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation for when he is tried he shall receive the crown of life which the Lord hath promised to them that love him 13 Let no man say when he is tempted I am tempted of God for God cannot be tempted with ‖ Or evils evil neither tempteth he any man 14 But every man is tempted when he is drawn away of his own lust and enticed 15 Then when lust hath conceived it bringeth forth sin and sin when it is finished bringeth sorth death 16 Do not err my beloved brethren 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and cometh down from the Father of lights with whom is no variableness neither shadow of turning 18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth that we should be a kinde of first-fruits of his cratures 19 Wherefore my beloved brethren let every man be swift to hear * Prov. 17.27 slow to speak slow to wrath 20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God 21 Wherefore say apart all filthiness and super sluity of naughtiness and receive with meekness the engrafted word which is able to save your souls 22 But * Matth. 7.21 Rum 2.13 be ye doers of the word and not hearers onely deceiving your own selves 23 For if any be a hearer of the word and not a doer he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass 24 For he beholdeth himself and goeth his way and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was 25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty and continueth therein he being not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work this man shall be blessed in his ‖ Or doing deed 26 If any man among you seem to be religious and bridleth not his tongue but deceiveth his own heart this mans religion is vain 27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction and to keep himself unspotted from the world CHAP. II. It is not agreeable to Christian profession to regard
not seen ye love in whom though now ye see him not yet beleeving ye rejoyce with joy unspeakable and full of glory 9 Receiving the end of your faith even the salvation of your souls 10 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you 11 Searching what or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signifie when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glory that should follow 12 Unto whom it was revealed that not unto themselves but unto us they did minister the things which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the holy Ghost sent down from heaven which things the angels desire to look into 13 Wherefore gird up the loyns of your minde be sober and hope † Gr. perfectly to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ 14 As obedient children not fashioning your selves according to the former lusts in your ignorance 15 But as he which hath called you is holy so be ye holy in all manner of conversation 16 Because it is written * Lev. 11.44 19.2 20.7 Be ye holy for I am holy 17 And if ye call on the Father * Deu. 10.17 Rom. 2.11 who without respect of persons judgeth according to every mans work pass the time of your sojourning here in fear 18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things as silver and gold from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers 19 But with the precious bloud of Christ as of a Lamb without blemish and without spot 20 * Rom. 16.25 Col. 1.26 1 Tim. 1.10 Tit. 1.2 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world but was manifest in these last times for you 21 Who by him do beleeve in God that raised him up from the dead and gave him glory that your faith and hope might be in God 22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned * Rom. 12.10 Ch. 2.17 love of the brethren see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently 23 Being born again not of corruptible seed but of incorruptible by the word of God which liveth and abideth for ever 24 ‖ Or for that For * Isa 40.6 Jam. 2.10 all flesh is as grass and all the glory of man as the flower of grass The grass withereth and the flower thereof salleth away 25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you CHAP.
