ostentation_n and_o comparison_n of_o learning_n set_v aside_o as_o shall_v give_v they_o small_a advantage_n of_o boast_v and_o shall_v be_v both_o more_o please_v to_o god_n and_o more_o for_o the_o comfort_v the_o heart_n of_o he_o who_o list_v to_o be_v direct_v by_o it_o than_o popery_n can_v afford_v and_o withal_o a_o direction_n that_o have_v not_o only_o be_v shape_v out_o after_o the_o rule_n of_o the_o scripture_n but_o also_o such_o as_o have_v be_v and_o be_v practise_v and_o follow_v so_o far_o forth_o as_o of_o sinful_a flesh_n may_v be_v look_v for_o both_o of_o minister_n and_o people_n and_o approve_v of_o those_o who_o have_v excel_v &_o go_v before_o many_o in_o both_o and_o although_o i_o deny_v not_o but_o that_o many_o thing_n may_v have_v be_v far_o better_a set_v down_o and_o express_v than_o i_o be_o able_a to_o do_v yet_o that_o none_o think_v i_o to_o have_v take_v in_o hand_n a_o matter_n above_o my_o reach_n and_o wherein_o i_o have_v no_o skill_n thus_o much_o i_o say_v that_o for_o these_o twenty_o year_n and_o more_o i_o have_v aim_v at_o this_o in_o my_o read_n preach_v and_o live_v and_o in_o the_o observe_n of_o myself_o and_o the_o example_n of_o other_o what_o communion_n and_o near_a acquaintance_n there_o may_v be_v betwixt_o god_n and_o a_o christian_a what_o hold_n may_v be_v lay_v on_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n what_o strength_n may_v be_v get_v against_o sin_n what_o freedom_n and_o liberty_n we_o may_v have_v by_o faith_n what_o setlednes_n and_o constancy_n in_o a_o godly_a life_n what_o comfort_n and_o rejoice_v the_o child_n of_o god_n by_o his_o free_a grant_n may_v have_v even_o in_o this_o life_n and_o that_o both_o sound_n and_o constant_a
understand_v or_o to_o practice_v for_o although_o many_o shall_v have_v no_o need_n of_o this_o direct_n of_o they_o to_o read_v it_o with_o profit_n because_o they_o can_v easy_o direct_v themselves_o when_o they_o once_o know_v the_o general_a part_n and_o argument_n of_o it_o as_o before_o be_v mention_v yet_o because_o my_o desire_n herein_o be_v as_o well_o to_o help_v and_o benefit_v the_o plain_a and_o simple_a such_o as_o many_o of_o they_o be_v among_o who_o i_o have_v preach_v the_o same_o as_o well_o as_o to_o bring_v the_o wise_a and_o more_o learned_a sort_n acquaint_v with_o the_o practice_n of_o it_o therefore_o i_o know_v they_o shall_v have_v need_n thereof_o now_o when_o they_o shall_v understand_v it_o in_o some_o good_a sort_n let_v they_o weigh_v and_o consider_v how_o far_o forth_o they_o have_v have_v use_n of_o it_o heretofore_o as_o whether_o they_o have_v according_a to_o the_o first_o part_n of_o this_o book_n by_o the_o ministry_n of_o any_o sound_a preacher_n of_o the_o gospel_n attain_v to_o the_o assurance_n of_o their_o salvation_n and_o of_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o their_o sin_n wherein_o if_o any_o will_v take_v it_o as_o grant_v though_o false_o as_o they_o be_v most_o ready_a to_o do_v so_o who_o have_v lest_o feel_v the_o burden_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o therefore_o be_v indeed_o further_a off_o from_o it_o herein_o i_o say_v if_o any_o will_v needs_o deceive_v themselves_o i_o can_v help_v it_o but_o they_o be_v like_a to_o read_v the_o rest_n with_o less_o fruit_n and_o comfort_n and_o to_o go_v without_o the_o use_n of_o it_o in_o their_o life_n whatsoever_o they_o hope_v for_o and_o therefore_o such_o i_o advise_v to_o take_v most_o pain_n in_o the_o first_o part_n i_o mean_v in_o the_o doctrine_n of_o it_o and_o read_v other_o treatise_n concern_v the_o matter_n as_o master_n mores_n and_o other_o catechism_n and_o master_n perkins_n work_v namely_o his_o book_n entitle_v the_o grain_n of_o mustard_n seed_n and_o to_o raise_v all_o the_o doubt_n they_o can_v to_o any_o experience_a teacher_n or_o brother_n and_o to_o look_v for_o and_o see_v those_o thing_n work_v upon_o they_o which_o be_v teach_v there_o both_o the_o doctrine_n of_o humiliation_n and_o also_o of_o justification_n and_o deliverance_n if_o this_o be_v attain_v let_v they_o consider_v for_o the_o better_a assure_v themselves_o hereof_o that_o they_o can_v but_o affect_v love_n embrace_v and_o delight_n in_o the_o doctrine_n of_o sanctification_n and_o repentance_n from_o dead_a work_n i_o mean_v they_o shall_v desire_v to_o practice_v the_o godly_a and_o christian_n life_n when_o they_o see_v that_o it_o be_v the_o commandment_n of_o he_o who_o love_v they_o most_o dear_o and_o what_o it_o be_v and_o wherein_o it_o consist_v which_o be_v the_o sum_n of_o the_o second_o treatise_n of_o this_o book_n and_o to_o this_o end_n let_v they_o read_v and_o by_o mark_v seek_v as_o such_o who_o will_v find_v that_o they_o may_v see_v what_o sin_n there_o be_v in_o they_o which_o they_o be_v not_o willing_a nor_o desirous_a to_o forsake_v if_o there_o be_v any_o or_o among_o duty_n general_o appertain_v to_o all_o or_o particular_o touch_v themselves_o which_o they_o can_v submit_v themselves_o unto_o if_o there_o be_v either_o of_o these_o find_v in_o they_o as_o that_o they_o can_v leave_v nor_o be_v bring_v to_o renounce_v some_o particular_a sin_n nor_o obtain_v of_o themselves_o to_o be_v subject_a to_o some_o special_a duty_n as_o think_v it_o too_o strict_a as_o thus_o it_o may_v be_v with_o many_o and_o no_o doubt_n be_v such_o must_v know_v that_o it_o be_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o scripture_n that_o all_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n be_v have_v in_o account_n of_o we_o 5.18_o and_o conscience_n make_v of_o one_o as_o well_o as_o of_o another_o which_o if_o they_o see_v and_o acknowledge_v according_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n they_o can_v but_o submit_v themselves_o thereunto_o if_o they_o have_v right_o embrace_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o former_a treatise_n that_o as_o in_o judgement_n and_o knowledge_n they_o yield_v so_o their_o heart_n and_o affection_n may_v go_v with_o the_o same_o and_o so_o do_v god_n will_v work_v in_o they_o by_o little_a and_o little_a seek_v it_o by_o prayer_n of_o faith_n even_o as_o he_o wrought_v the_o like_a in_o they_o before_o and_o weaken_v such_o rebelliousnes_n in_o their_o heart_n already_o if_o therefore_o the_o teachable_a and_o christian_n reader_n be_v thus_o far_o wrought_v upon_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o he_o thus_o favour_n approve_v and_o give_v over_o himself_o to_o be_v make_v true_o repentant_a which_o be_v that_o that_o be_v require_v in_o the_o second_o treatise_n of_o this_o book_n then_o be_v he_o fit_a to_o occupy_v himself_o about_o and_o to_o be_v conversant_a in_o the_o three_o and_o four_o part_n of_o it_o that_o be_v to_o say_v in_o the_o doctrine_n which_o require_v a_o daily_a walk_n in_o a_o christian_a course_n by_o the_o use_n of_o such_o help_n as_o be_v appoint_v of_o god_n for_o that_o purpose_n and_o some_o of_o they_o also_o daily_o as_o in_o the_o proper_a place_n shall_v appear_v for_o every_o true_a christian_a be_v to_o know_v that_o the_o religion_n and_o worship_n of_o god_n must_v be_v in_o use_n and_o practice_v among_o the_o imbracer_n of_o it_o as_o well_o one_o day_n as_o another_o but_o how_o shall_v any_o be_v able_a to_o keep_v his_o heart_n in_o frame_n and_o reform_v his_o life_n daily_o by_o the_o mean_n which_o god_n have_v appoint_v as_o in_o the_o three_o and_o four_o part_n of_o this_o book_n be_v require_v except_o he_o be_v first_o a_o like_a and_o a_o allower_n of_o all_o know_a point_n of_o duty_n and_o do_v hearty_o renounce_v all_o evil_a as_o be_v require_v in_o the_o second_o part_n which_o be_v do_v let_v he_o look_v to_o grow_v daily_o more_o strong_a in_o faith_n whereby_o he_o may_v hold_v and_o keep_v fast_o the_o certainty_n of_o god_n favour_n daily_o and_o constant_o and_o not_o as_o too_o many_o and_o yet_o the_o people_n of_o god_n do_v who_o be_v not_o acquaint_v with_o this_o that_o their_o confidence_n shall_v be_v maintain_v daily_o or_o a_o good_a conscience_n in_o their_o particular_a action_n regard_v and_o that_o on_o one_o day_n as_o another_o but_o think_v it_o enough_o at_o sometime_o to_o have_v this_o care_n neither_o let_v any_o look_v to_o repel_v this_o as_o too_o strict_a under_o pretence_n of_o weighty_a affair_n and_o their_o own_o infirmity_n for_o this_o be_v but_o the_o delusion_n of_o the_o devil_n as_o shall_v be_v show_v who_o will_v easy_o persuade_v it_o to_o be_v more_o than_o need_v this_o be_v that_o which_o must_v be_v learn_v out_o of_o the_o three_o and_o four_o part_n and_o when_o this_o be_v understand_v approve_a consent_v unto_o and_o aim_v at_o the_o five_o part_n of_o the_o book_n shall_v be_v clear_a and_o easy_a to_o understand_v and_o what_o use_n he_o shall_v make_v of_o it_o namely_o of_o the_o let_v and_o hindrance_n which_o the_o devil_n raise_v up_o to_o hold_v he_o back_o from_o this_o course_n of_o life_n and_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o same_o of_o the_o which_o some_o i_o will_v set_v down_o and_o help_v he_o the_o better_a to_o know_v many_o other_o thereby_o and_o he_o that_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o direct_v his_o life_n and_o take_v heed_n to_o his_o way_n as_o he_o shall_v by_o god_n word_n be_v teach_v shall_v break_v through_o many_o of_o the_o let_v which_o yet_o shall_v strong_o hold_v back_o and_o hinder_v other_o man_n as_o the_o five_o part_n will_v show_v and_o if_o he_o be_v for_o a_o season_n withdraw_v from_o a_o godly_a course_n yet_o he_o shall_v there_o find_v help_n and_o remedy_n to_o recover_v again_o and_o little_a ease_n otherwise_o and_o if_o there_o be_v any_o difficulty_n in_o conform_v a_o man_n self_n after_o this_o forementioned_a doctrine_n as_o i_o deny_v not_o but_o the_o flesh_n will_v find_v many_o yet_o against_o they_o all_o let_v he_o proceed_v and_o read_v with_o good_a regard_n the_o six_o treatise_n wherein_o be_v set_v down_o the_o manifold_a and_o goodly_a prerogative_n and_o privilege_n which_o god_n have_v bequeath_v to_o his_o people_n to_o hearten_v they_o on_o and_o encourage_v they_o to_o godliness_n and_o to_o make_v the_o christian_n life_n easy_a and_o he_o shall_v see_v great_a light_n and_o find_v exceed_a force_n therein_o to_o stir_v he_o up_o to_o go_v forward_o mighty_o against_o all_o faint_a and_o then_o he_o shall_v not_o be_v move_v for_o all_o the_o objection_n cavil_n and_o fleshly_a reason_n which_o he_o shall_v read_v in_o the_o seven_o part_n for_o the_o comfort_n and_o experience_n which_o he_o shall_v partly_o enjoy_v
and_o to_o think_v that_o as_o the_o gift_n of_o faith_n be_v most_o excellent_a so_o there_o can_v be_v too_o great_a help_n yield_v to_o the_o weak_a in_o direct_v they_o to_o come_v by_o it_o concern_v the_o first_o therefore_o although_o i_o have_v by_o sundry_a token_n show_v who_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n and_o how_o every_o faithful_a christian_a may_v judge_v of_o himself_o hereby_o yet_o for_o want_v of_o experience_n and_o by_o vehemency_n of_o temptation_n they_o can_v so_o bold_o and_o confident_o rest_n and_o stay_v themselves_o by_o general_a doctrine_n nor_o apply_v it_o to_o themselves_o those_o i_o mean_v which_o be_v weak_a christian_n yet_o such_o as_o have_v attain_v communion_n with_o their_o brethren_n in_o faith_n and_o godliness_n therefore_o though_o the_o aforemention_v property_n of_o true_a believer_n may_v be_v clear_o see_v and_o discern_v to_o be_v in_o they_o and_o they_o themselves_o also_o will_v confess_v that_o they_o have_v be_v stay_v save_o in_o temptation_n and_o that_o some_o of_o they_o oftentimes_o have_v find_v singular_a comfort_n in_o christ_n and_o desire_n much_o to_o be_v with_o he_o yet_o soon_o they_o be_v drive_v from_o their_o hold_n and_o cause_v to_o suspect_v their_o comfort_n to_o be_v a_o vain_a fancy_n and_o so_o fall_v into_o much_o fear_n and_o doubt_v that_o they_o be_v none_o of_o the_o lord_n they_o must_v know_v therefore_o that_o see_v there_o be_v no_o shadow_n of_o changeablenes_n with_o god_n that_o it_o be_v their_o own_o weakness_n so_o to_o think_v as_o the_o prophet_n confess_v of_o himself_o in_o the_o like_a case_n 77.13_o after_o he_o have_v long_o wrestle_v and_o strive_v with_o that_o temptation_n for_o he_o that_o have_v be_v assure_o persuade_v of_o god_n love_n towards_o he_o at_o any_o time_n in_o his_o whole_a life_n ought_v not_o to_o cast_v away_o his_o confidence_n after_o 10.35_o nor_o suffer_v himself_o to_o be_v deprive_v of_o it_o be_v his_o chief_a treasure_n faith_n but_o though_o this_o may_v be_v a_o stay_n to_o a_o weak_a conscience_n who_o be_v sometime_o afflict_a in_o this_o sort_n yet_o i_o say_v further_o that_o see_v he_o can_v be_v satisfy_v till_o his_o doubtfulness_n which_o by_o all_o his_o might_n he_o seek_v to_o subdue_v be_v remove_v and_o his_o soul_n set_v at_o liberty_n again_o by_o some_o new_a light_n in_o god_n promise_n therefore_o he_o be_v to_o be_v persuade_v that_o he_o labour_v after_o and_o groan_v to_o rest_v his_o weary_a and_o heavy_a heart_n on_o these_o he_o can_v miscarry_v nor_o be_v forsake_v of_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o low_a depth_n of_o his_o distress_n faith_n for_o some_o one_o or_o other_o testimony_n and_o property_n of_o the_o new_a birth_n shall_v ever_o be_v find_v in_o he_o although_o he_o always_o feel_v it_o not_o neither_o perceive_v it_o himself_o whereby_o it_o shall_v be_v manifest_a that_o he_o live_v to_o god_n the_o life_n of_o god_n even_o as_o hear_v breathe_a move_a feel_a and_o such_o like_a be_v infallible_a token_n of_o life_n in_o the_o body_n which_o by_o many_o likelihood_n appear_v to_o be_v dead_a and_o if_o to_o his_o own_o judgement_n it_o seem_v that_o all_o hope_n be_v cut_v off_o through_o the_o rage_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o strength_n of_o the_o temptation_n yet_o it_o be_v as_o if_o a_o man_n be_v sudden_o strike_v down_o to_o the_o ground_n with_o some_o violent_a blow_n and_o amaze_v who_o yet_o afterward_o recover_v himself_o again_o so_o that_o even_o he_o which_o feel_v not_o that_o he_o have_v faith_n and_o life_n be_v not_o yet_o without_o it_o see_v he_o be_v not_o without_o that_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o always_o deny_v it_o although_o indeed_o he_o have_v need_n of_o especial_a and_o strong_a comfort_n and_o this_o be_v my_o answer_n but_o if_o this_o be_v not_o enough_o but_o thou_o will_v marvel_v why_o god_n do_v thus_o deal_v with_o thou_o and_o suffer_v thou_o to_o fall_v to_o such_o depth_n of_o doubt_v sorrow_n and_o fear_v although_o he_o love_v thou_o yea_o and_o that_o after_o thou_o have_v feel_v such_o comfort_n to_o thy_o conscience_n i_o must_v make_v my_o answer_n more_o full_a and_o large_a for_o the_o further_o satisfy_v of_o thou_o herein_o i_o say_v therefore_o although_o this_o be_v by_o the_o wise_a providence_n of_o god_n that_o many_o of_o his_o true_o beget_v child_n who_o therefore_o have_v have_v sound_a comfort_n in_o christ_n do_v fall_v sometime_o and_o that_o very_o dangerous_o and_o do_v great_o waver_v and_o doubt_v oftentimes_o and_o so_o become_v uncomfortable_a which_o the_o lord_n dispose_v lest_o by_o their_o sudden_a change_n from_o so_o damnable_a and_o uncomfortable_a a_o estate_n to_o so_o happy_a and_o joyful_a they_o shall_v be_v lift_v up_o and_o conceit_v and_o so_o become_v secure_a and_o presumptuous_a the_o forerunner_n and_o cause_n of_o a_o fearful_a fall_n yet_o this_o be_v certain_a it_o ought_v not_o thus_o to_o be_v on_o our_o part_n for_o it_o be_v as_o i_o have_v say_v before_o a_o weakness_n which_o must_v be_v withstand_v and_o overcome_v for_o the_o attain_n whereto_o the_o occasion_n of_o this_o doubt_n in_o he_o who_o have_v once_o believe_v must_v be_v search_v out_o and_o so_o remove_v which_o ordinary_o be_v our_o own_o infirmity_n neglect_v of_o duty_n and_o sleightnes_n in_o the_o manner_n of_o perform_v the_o same_o or_o some_o particular_a sin_n also_o pronenes_n to_o sin_n a_o nourish_a of_o the_o same_o and_o strength_n of_o it_o or_o long_o lie_v therein_o whereupon_o the_o tender_a conscience_n fear_v that_o his_o former_a comfort_n be_v but_o deceitful_a and_o vain_a and_o so_o doubt_v of_o his_o own_o estate_n for_o the_o right_n remove_v hereof_o this_o be_v due_o to_o be_v consider_v that_o as_o the_o root_n of_o our_o comfort_n in_o christ_n be_v not_o the_o strength_n of_o our_o christian_a life_n faith_n so_o the_o weakness_n herein_o ought_v not_o to_o breed_v doubt_v of_o our_o salvation_n by_o christ_n but_o for_o as_o much_o as_o all_o our_o comfort_n stand_v in_o this_o that_o god_n who_o justify_v the_o ungodly_a have_v free_o give_v his_o son_n and_o in_o he_o be_v reconcile_v to_o we_o who_o so_o hearty_o desire_v his_o favour_n have_v be_v his_o enemy_n and_o have_v by_o his_o gospel_n call_v we_o and_o by_o his_o spirit_n wrought_v in_o our_o heart_n a_o sure_a persuasion_n hereof_o whereby_o we_o which_o be_v dead_a in_o sin_n be_v make_v alive_a to_o god_n &_o so_o be_v new_o bear_v and_o therefore_o begin_v to_o be_v change_v first_o in_o affection_n and_o then_o in_o conversation_n by_o little_a and_o little_a therefore_o if_o we_o have_v this_o assurance_n of_o our_o new_a birth_n though_o there_o be_v in_o we_o much_o weakness_n of_o the_o spiritual_a life_n yet_o we_o ought_v not_o to_o doubt_v whether_o we_o be_v god_n child_n see_v he_o that_o be_v new_o bear_v can_v never_o die_v but_o rather_o we_o be_v to_o remember_v first_o we_o be_v but_o child_n faith_n and_o therefore_o weak_a second_o we_o be_v very_o subject_a to_o many_o spiritual_a disease_n some_o such_o as_o take_v away_o sense_n of_o life_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v seek_v to_o be_v cure_v and_o not_o despair_v of_o life_n because_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o no_o such_o can_v perish_v so_o that_o if_o we_o see_v that_o we_o have_v turn_v our_o heart_n from_o our_o christian_n course_n &_o offend_a god_n or_o which_o be_v more_o if_o we_o have_v suffer_v ourselves_o to_o be_v seduce_v any_o manner_n of_o way_n we_o must_v not_o despair_v or_o doubt_v of_o the_o safety_n of_o the_o whole_a person_n when_o any_o one_o part_n or_o member_n be_v distemper_v and_o ill_o at_o ease_n but_o cure_v it_o simile_n and_o labour_n to_o restore_v that_o to_o health_n again_o as_o if_o it_o be_v thy_o heart_n thy_o eye_n thy_o hand_n or_o any_o other_o part_n which_o have_v offend_v resort_v thou_o to_o the_o physician_n christ_n jesus_n make_v thy_o complaint_n that_o thou_o be_v heavy_a and_o will_v feign_v return_n again_o from_o whence_o thou_o be_v fall_v and_o be_v confident_a for_o his_o own_o promise_n sake_n who_o call_v with_o stretch_v out_o arm_n say_v return_v thou_o which_o wander_v 11.28_o and_o thou_o who_o will_v find_v ease_n and_o comfort_n come_v unto_o i_o and_o i_o will_v refresh_v thou_o believe_v in_o i_o and_o i_o will_v satisfy_v thou_o in_o that_o which_o thou_o hungre_v for_o now_o if_o they_o who_o have_v fall_v and_o offend_v god_n may_v turn_v home_o again_o to_o their_o first_o husband_n with_o good_a welcome_n shall_v not_o they_o much_o more_o be_v belove_v of_o he_o and_o therefore_o comfort_v by_o he_o who_o have_v not_o provoke_v he_o but_o be_v only_o hold_v down_o through_o fear_n
lest_o conceit_n of_o they_o and_o find_v not_o the_o least_o part_n of_o our_o nature_n to_o incline_v to_o they_o though_o otherwise_o we_o complain_v of_o great_a frailty_n as_o to_o have_v thought_n to_o blaspheme_v god_n to_o be_v tempt_v to_o lay_v violent_a hand_n on_o other_o not_o move_v thereto_o by_o any_o hate_n or_o malice_n or_o to_o devour_v ourselves_o to_o despair_v and_o distrust_n of_o god_n mercy_n and_o grace_n all_o which_o sin_n with_o such_o other_o the_o party_n have_v never_o have_v delight_n in_o when_o he_o be_v yet_o overtake_v with_o some_o other_o sin_n by_o the_o which_o i_o purpose_v to_o speak_v of_o to_o no_o further_a end_n but_o for_o the_o help_n of_o such_o as_o be_v sometime_o deceive_v and_o so_o oppress_v after_o the_o same_o manner_n here_o be_v no_o fit_a place_n to_o satisfy_v they_o who_o will_v be_v glad_a to_o know_v more_o of_o this_o matter_n to_o proceed_v therefore_o and_o so_o to_o draw_v to_o a_o end_n herein_o as_o armour_n from_o they_o object_n whereby_o before_o they_o have_v resist_v he_o he_o hold_v they_o at_o this_o vantage_n that_o every_o thing_n which_o be_v before_o they_o be_v make_v matter_n to_o increase_v their_o distress_a estate_n and_o therefore_o if_o they_o see_v a_o knife_n all_o their_o thought_n be_v to_o destroy_v themselves_o if_o they_o go_v by_o water_n they_o be_v vehement_o persuade_v to_o drown_v themselves_o and_o so_o be_v they_o tempt_v to_o strangle_v themselves_o if_o either_o the_o place_n give_v they_o any_o occasion_n or_o the_o instrument_n wherewith_o they_o another_o but_o discouragement_n on_o everyside_n for_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v attribute_v to_o satan_n or_o any_o want_n of_o subtlety_n readiness_n to_o hurt_n ableness_n malice_n and_o cruelty_n that_o either_o the_o one_o sort_n be_v at_o all_o preserve_v or_o the_o other_o more_o free_v from_o the_o like_a measure_n of_o languish_v and_o fear_n or_o which_o be_v the_o senseless_a sickness_n and_o disease_n of_o this_o age_n and_o far_o more_o dangerous_a from_o bold_a security_n and_o presumption_n but_o as_o i_o have_v say_v the_o lord_n keep_v of_o they_o both_o neither_o be_v it_o any_o marvel_n to_o we_o though_o it_o be_v not_o mark_v of_o the_o unbeliever_n because_o the_o lord_n have_v his_o eye_n ever_o upon_o his_o beloved_a one_o as_o david_n speak_v psalm_n 41.12_o that_o he_o may_v see_v that_o no_o hurt_n befall_v they_o even_o as_o a_o mother_n have_v her_o eye_n always_o on_o the_o young_a child_n which_o begin_v to_o go_v that_o it_o get_v no_o knock_n but_o now_o to_o conclude_v you_o will_v ask_v what_o remedy_n be_v to_o be_v use_v against_o such_o sore_a assault_n first_o i_o say_v that_o see_v their_o conscience_n bear_v they_o witness_v how_o much_o these_o temptation_n be_v repugnant_a to_o their_o desire_n and_o like_n and_o chief_o raise_v and_o procure_v by_o satan_n in_o they_o who_o abuse_v their_o simplicity_n therefore_o there_o be_v no_o cause_n why_o they_o shall_v be_v so_o discourage_v temptation_n and_o out_o of_o heart_n although_o he_o have_v hale_v and_o violent_o carry_v they_o to_o such_o misery_n as_o though_o they_o have_v take_v glory_n in_o offend_a god_n this_o i_o say_v let_v they_o mark_v as_o soon_o as_o they_o be_v fit_a to_o hear_v it_o and_o the_o rather_o they_o be_v to_o count_v they_o to_o proceed_v from_o he_o than_o from_o themselves_o because_o they_o be_v such_o as_o be_v altogether_o contrary_a to_o their_o former_a conversation_n and_o to_o nature_n itself_o and_o such_o as_o have_v no_o enforcement_n nor_o enticement_n but_o from_o he_o remedy_n they_o be_v further_a to_o consider_v how_o much_o it_o do_v displease_v god_n that_o they_o be_v remove_v from_o their_o faith_n and_o give_v place_n to_o the_o spirit_n of_o error_n and_o therefore_o they_o shall_v gather_v more_o godly_a boldness_n and_o confidence_n in_o he_o on_o the_o one_o side_n and_o more_o strength_n against_o satan_n on_o the_o other_o side_n for_o if_o god_n call_v and_o incourage_v we_o to_o trust_v and_o believe_v in_o he_o and_o we_o stand_v in_o need_n thereof_o will_v most_o glad_o as_o we_o will_v all_o say_v in_o such_o a_o case_n embrace_v his_o promise_n make_v in_o christ_n jesus_n who_o be_v he_o which_o shall_v hinder_v we_o if_o the_o lord_n will_v justify_v and_o clear_v we_o who_o shall_v condemn_v we_o neither_o let_v they_o after_o all_o this_o be_v still_o object_v that_o they_o feel_v small_a strength_n of_o faith_n and_o hope_n as_o many_o of_o god_n dear_a child_n do_v for_o thereby_o the_o enemy_n may_v take_v great_a encouragement_n to_o their_o own_o disadvantage_n for_o what_o if_o they_o feel_v not_o the_o sweet_a taste_n thereof_o mercy_n which_o sometime_o they_o feel_v shall_v they_o judge_v therefore_o themselves_o to_o be_v utter_o bereave_v thereof_o if_o the_o soul_n be_v now_o sick_a and_o taste_v not_o the_o sweet_a meat_n of_o consolation_n which_o it_o be_v wont_a be_v it_o therefore_o always_o so_o will_v they_o measure_v themselves_o by_o that_o which_o they_o present_o feel_v when_o the_o soul_n have_v lose_v her_o taste_n or_o rather_o by_o the_o time_n past_a as_o the_o
prophet_n by_o his_o example_n teach_v they_o in_o the_o like_a case_n while_o it_o stand_v free_a from_o the_o disease_n of_o temptation_n when_o they_o find_v comfort_n in_o the_o spirit_n through_o a_o acceptable_a measure_n of_o faith_n faith_n further_o the_o trial_n of_o their_o faith_n be_v likewise_o to_o be_v take_v by_o those_o fruit_n which_o be_v evident_a to_o the_o eye_n of_o other_o who_o can_v judge_v more_o sincere_o than_o the_o afflict_a themselves_o who_o understanding_n be_v much_o alter_v by_o satan_n terror_n and_o here_o as_o in_o fit_a place_n i_o allege_v the_o strong_a faith_n of_o the_o woman_n of_o canaan_n when_o christ_n seem_v to_o give_v she_o the_o repulse_n utter_o yet_o she_o will_v not_o be_v move_v from_o her_o faith_n when_o fiery_a dart_n be_v thrust_v into_o she_o three_o or_o four_o one_o after_o another_o the_o same_o i_o say_v to_o other_o their_o objection_n of_o like_a sort_n as_o i_o have_v say_v to_o these_o as_o when_o they_o reason_n thus_o against_o themselves_o that_o they_o do_v not_o live_v as_o god_n child_n do_v nor_o so_o holy_o as_o god_n require_v and_o therefore_o they_o can_v have_v such_o comfort_n as_o they_o have_v what_o then_o be_v they_o reprobate_n have_v they_o no_o grace_n because_o they_o want_v that_o which_o they_o will_v have_v ought_v they_o not_o to_o consider_v faith_n that_o they_o be_v the_o lord_n plant_n take_v not_o their_o full_a perfection_n at_o once_o but_o according_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o a_o plant_n require_v a_o daily_o water_v and_o dress_v whereby_o in_o the_o end_n they_o attain_v to_o a_o full_a growth_n in_o christ_n oh_o but_o they_o feel_v not_o the_o testimony_n of_o god_n spirit_n which_o may_v assure_v they_o i_o answer_v neither_o do_v any_o of_o god_n child_n at_o all_o time_n feel_v it_o but_o that_o they_o may_v see_v their_o own_o frailty_n god_n do_v as_o it_o be_v hide_v himself_o sometime_o for_o a_o season_n as_o the_o mother_n do_v from_o the_o child_n to_o try_v the_o affection_n of_o it_o to_o she_o that_o they_o may_v with_o more_o earnest_n desire_v mourn_v for_o god_n wont_a grace_n and_o when_o they_o have_v obtain_v it_o again_o may_v with_o more_o joyfulness_n of_o heart_n praise_v he_o and_o yet_o god_n do_v not_o withhold_v comfort_n from_o he_o many_o time_n 33.12_o when_o they_o walk_v heavy_o who_o if_o they_o can_v give_v credit_n unto_o he_o may_v assure_v themselves_o that_o they_o may_v live_v in_o safety_n under_o his_o protection_n all_o the_o day_n long_o but_o their_o own_o frailty_n and_o the_o vehemency_n of_o the_o temptation_n which_o oppress_v they_o persuasion_n diminish_v the_o feel_n thereof_o but_o patience_n and_o constancy_n with_o a_o resolute_a mind_n to_o bear_v god_n trial_n of_o his_o hand_n because_o they_o be_v not_o destitute_a of_o faith_n as_o i_o have_v prove_v whereby_o they_o apprehend_v christ_n though_o weak_a and_o which_o have_v bring_v unto_o they_o much_o comfort_n in_o time_n past_a though_o for_o a_o season_n the_o lord_n work_v all_o for_o their_o good_a it_o seem_v to_o they_o far_o otherwise_o and_o of_o the_o former_a point_n of_o this_o second_o head_n or_o general_a part_n of_o this_o treatise_n that_o be_v how_o the_o weak_a of_o god_n people_n be_v to_o be_v uphold_v in_o vehement_a temptation_n thus_o much_o be_v say_v chap._n 9_o the_o difference_n of_o believer_n from_o they_o that_o be_v none_o now_o follow_v the_o second_o point_n wherein_o for_o the_o clear_a manifestation_n of_o that_o which_o have_v be_v say_v i_o must_v now_o discern_v from_o the_o former_a sort_n such_o as_o have_v great_a show_n of_o faithful_a one_o and_o believer_n and_o yet_o be_v nothing_o less_o and_o show_v that_o the_o weak_a christian_n of_o who_o i_o have_v speak_v may_v see_v their_o estate_n apparent_o different_a from_o they_o who_o yet_o come_v near_o of_o other_o unto_o believer_n and_o then_o answer_v some_o doubt_n which_o i_o know_v do_v stick_v in_o the_o mind_n of_o diverse_a about_o this_o matter_n and_o first_o whereas_o some_o may_v marvel_v that_o i_o in_o the_o describe_v of_o god_n child_n have_v not_o rest_v in_o these_o as_o infallible_a mark_n thereof_o namely_o 1._o sorrow_n for_o their_o misery_n 2._o confession_n of_o their_o sin_n to_o god_n 3._o fear_n of_o his_o displeasure_n for_o the_o same_o and_o 4._o desire_v some_o kind_n of_o amendment_n of_o life_n see_v they_o be_v also_o in_o they_o who_o be_v effectual_o call_v of_o god_n i_o answer_v i_o have_v follow_v the_o scripture_n herein_o and_o that_o i_o have_v in_o show_v who_o be_v the_o lord_n make_v mention_n rather_o of_o those_o grace_n of_o god_n which_o be_v proper_o belong_v to_o the_o faithful_a then_o of_o they_o which_o may_v be_v in_o hypocrite_n and_o hollow_a heart_a professor_n see_v we_o find_v both_o by_o scripture_n and_o experience_n that_o these_o forename_a affection_n and_o many_o good_a and_o commendable_a virtue_n as_o they_o seem_v to_o be_v may_v have_v place_n in_o those_o which_o do_v not_o appertain_v to_o god_n election_n for_o a_o man_n may_v be_v much_o burden_a with_o the_o weight_n of_o his_o sin_n his_o conscience_n terrify_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n 21.27_o he_o may_v be_v pensive_a afterward_o for_o his_o sin_n commit_v and_o wish_v it_o be_v undo_v afraid_a for_o the_o punishment_n and_o may_v promise_v amendment_n and_o walk_v heavy_o and_o express_v it_o by_o outward_a sign_n and_o yet_o not_o release_v nor_o set_v free_a from_o that_o which_o he_o fear_v so_o the_o same_o person_n by_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n may_v find_v joy_n and_o delight_n in_o the_o glorious_a tiding_n which_o it_o bring_v and_o take_v sensible_a pleasure_n in_o the_o exercise_n of_o religion_n 13.20_o he_o may_v have_v a_o taste_n of_o the_o life_n to_o come_v as_o balam_n he_o may_v reverence_v and_o fear_v the_o minister_n of_o god_n as_o only_o they_o have_v piece_n and_o fragment_n of_o many_o good_a point_n but_o rare_o it_o shall_v be_v find_v that_o one_o christian_a among_o many_o grow_v to_o see_v this_o which_o i_o now_o to_o set_v upon_o repentance_n and_o a_o godly_a life_n how_o to_o begin_v and_o how_o to_o proceed_v therein_o but_o be_v off_o and_o on_o now_o forward_o then_o backward_o and_o scarce_o at_o any_o time_n settle_v and_o stay_v the_o which_o although_o it_o be_v so_o in_o great_a part_n through_o their_o own_o weakness_n yet_o be_v it_o also_o in_o respect_n of_o their_o ignorance_n i_o speak_v of_o the_o better_a sort_n of_o people_n and_o such_o as_o have_v receive_v the_o first_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n whereas_o if_o they_o be_v persuade_v that_o they_o ought_v to_o make_v conscience_n of_o all_o sound_a doctrine_n that_o they_o hear_v and_o to_o give_v assent_n to_o every_o part_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o submit_v themselves_o thereto_o promise_n threat_n and_o commandment_n they_o shall_v hold_v more_o firm_o the_o persuasion_n of_o their_o salvation_n and_o also_o be_v better_o prepare_v how_o to_o fly_v evil_a and_o how_o to_o do_v duty_n and_o how_o to_o trust_v god_n in_o all_o kind_n of_o his_o promise_n therefore_o it_o be_v say_v to_o the_o hebrews_n 4.2_o to_o we_o be_v the_o gospel_n preach_v as_o also_o unto_o they_o but_o the_o of_o forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o of_o other_o grace_n how_o gross_o do_v the_o devil_n bewitch_v we_o by_o what_o mean_v soever_o he_o do_v it_o whether_o by_o keep_v we_o ignorant_a of_o this_o truth_n or_o otherwise_o busy_v and_o occupy_v we_o in_o the_o world_n that_o we_o think_v not_o of_o it_o nor_o at_o all_o look_n after_o it_o or_o whether_o we_o be_v hold_v from_o it_o any_o be_v better_o settle_v neither_o do_v many_o of_o they_o grow_v to_o see_v that_o their_o life_n be_v a_o continual_a and_o daily_a conflict_n with_o sin_n and_o distrust_n neither_o be_v they_o acquaint_v with_o the_o subtle_a sleight_n of_o the_o devil_n how_o covert_o he_o bring_v to_o pass_v that_o they_o forget_v they_o be_v purge_v from_o their_o sin_n and_o therefore_o lead_v after_o other_o deceitful_a allurement_n in_o the_o world_n i_o speak_v it_o for_o that_o i_o see_v how_o hardly_o they_o can_v be_v hold_v in_o the_o daily_a strengthen_n and_o nourish_v of_o their_o faith_n who_o yet_o have_v true_o though_o weak_o taste_v how_o sweet_a it_o be_v and_o christ_n thereby_o through_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o no_o marvel_n if_o they_o can_v be_v bring_v as_o some_o other_o be_v and_o yet_o they_o but_o weak_a also_o to_o set_v their_o delight_n therein_o as_o in_o the_o best_a treasure_n and_o for_o that_o so_o few_o be_v to_o be_v find_v who_o have_v have_v comfort_n by_o it_o twenty_o or_o thirty_o year_n ago_o when_o they_o first_o hear_v of_o it_o and_o receive_v it_o or_o in_o late_a year_n as_o many_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v doubt_v have_v also_o have_v for_o i_o dare_v not_o be_v so_o uncharitable_a as_o to_o judge_v otherwise_o of_o they_o for_o that_o such_o i_o say_v who_o have_v enjoy_v much_o comfort_n by_o it_o do_v not_o now_o nor_o have_v since_o that_o enjoy_v the_o same_o still_o what_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o it_o be_v it_o any_o other_o than_o this_o that_o for_o sundry_a year_n pass_v and_o now_o also_o they_o have_v so_o slight_a fruit_n of_o it_o that_o satan_n have_v steal_v away_o their_o heart_n after_o the_o love_n of_o present_a thing_n every_o one_o his_o way_n and_o cause_v they_o to_o lose_v that_o high_a estimation_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o once_o they_o have_v of_o it_o though_o they_o still_o commend_v it_o they_o not_o wise_a enough_o in_o the_o mean_a while_n to_o observe_v how_o they_o be_v deceive_v &_o blindfolded_a by_o he_o nor_o once_o to_o miss_v or_o complain_v of_o their_o loss_n while_o they_o may_v live_v at_o ease_n &_o prosper_v on_o earth_n in_o the_o mean_a while_n and_o that_o it_o have_v be_v thus_o with_o many_o &_o therefore_o also_o be_v so_o with_o other_o still_o hereby_o it_o have_v appear_v that_o at_o their_o death_n they_o recover_v their_o decay_a faith_n &_o sundry_a have_v more_o deep_o descend_v into_o themselves_o then_o of_o late_a before_o they_o have_v do_v and_o have_v call_v to_o remembrance_n the_o season_n in_o which_o they_o have_v rejoice_v through_o their_o faith_n in_o another_o manner_n then_o in_o their_o latter_a day_n much_o bewail_v also_o the_o loss_n of_o so_o great_a a_o benefit_n as_o they_o by_o the_o decay_n of_o affliction_n or_o in_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n but_o if_o they_o can_v see_v the_o bountifulness_n of_o god_n love_v towards_o they_o how_o unwoorthy_a soever_o they_o seem_v in_o their_o own_o eye_n they_o shall_v not_o go_v so_o long_o heavy_a and_o disquiet_v suffer_v the_o enemy_n to_o oppress_v they_o and_o as_o though_o there_o be_v no_o hope_n for_o they_o in_o their_o god_n but_o yet_o i_o say_v this_o on_o the_o other_o side_n oh_o that_o some_o do_v not_o look_v too_o hasty_o to_o be_v receive_v into_o favour_n and_o use_v mean_n too_o slight_o for_o the_o same_o yea_o i_o say_v again_o oh_o that_o some_o do_v not_o too_o profane_o or_o blockish_o and_o ceremonious_o seek_v to_o god_n and_o return_v to_o he_o in_o holownesse_n of_o heart_n which_o manner_n of_o abase_v themselves_o do_v hold_v they_o in_o a_o worse_a case_n than_o the_o other_o and_o thus_o to_o draw_v to_o a_o end_n of_o this_o matter_n i_o trust_v it_o do_v appear_v what_o a_o singular_a privilege_n this_o be_v that_o the_o lord_n grant_v free_a access_n to_o those_o who_o after_o their_o conversion_n have_v sin_v any_o way_n against_o their_o conscience_n to_o bewail_v their_o sin_n before_o he_o and_o to_o be_v persuade_v of_o forgiveness_n of_o the_o same_o which_o be_v know_v of_o they_o they_o need_v not_o hold_v back_o from_o he_o as_o many_o of_o his_o dear_a child_n for_o a_o long_a time_n have_v do_v but_o come_v home_o again_o and_o that_o early_o see_v god_n who_o have_v smite_v they_o will_v heal_v they_o and_o he_o 34.7_o who_o have_v call_v himself_o a_o god_n of_o great_a compassion_n and_o mercy_n will_v have_v his_o poor_a people_n to_o feel_v and_o enjoy_v it_o the_o same_o i_o say_v likewise_o of_o dulness_n idleness_n unprofitable_a barrenness_n of_o lord_n will_v be_v that_o they_o shall_v believe_v that_o he_o will_v give_v they_o strength_n to_o weaken_v they_o as_o well_o as_o forgive_v they_o and_o that_o they_o shall_v thereby_o be_v encourage_v to_o shake_v they_o off_o and_o break_v out_o of_o they_o which_o if_o they_o be_v persuade_v that_o they_o may_v do_v will_v encourage_v they_o more_o hearty_o to_o resist_v and_o stop_v they_o chap._n 7._o of_o the_o five_o privilege_n namely_o the_o gracious_a help_n by_o which_o he_o have_v grant_v they_o to_o grow_v in_o faith_n and_o godliness_n all_o this_o that_o have_v be_v say_v of_o these_o four_o privilege_n last_o mention_v will_v be_v grant_v in_o general_a to_o be_v true_a i_o doubt_v not_o for_o all_o professor_n be_v literal_a and_o speculative_a christian_n they_o say_v and_o do_v not_o but_o when_o this_o doctrine_n shall_v be_v bring_v to_o use_v of_o they_o in_o particular_n and_o when_o they_o be_v to_o be_v press_v with_o the_o practice_n of_o it_o than_o many_o will_v answer_v they_o hope_v that_o it_o do_v not_o appertain_v to_o they_o neither_o be_v they_o able_a they_o say_v thus_o to_o hold_v steadfast_o the_o certainty_n of_o god_n favour_v by_o faith_n and_o to_o subdue_v and_o overcome_v their_o sin_n to_o lead_v a_o godly_a life_n nor_o to_o rise_v up_o again_o when_o they_o have_v fall_v dangerous_o thereby_o show_v that_o they_o do_v not_o look_v to_o be_v lead_v by_o the_o word_n in_o their_o action_n but_o i_o go_v not_o about_o to_o persuade_v such_o that_o they_o have_v any_o part_n in_o these_o privilege_n and_o they_o may_v speak_v with_o good_a reason_n object_v thus_o of_o all_o other_o as_o well_o as_o of_o themselves_o if_o god_n have_v not_o appoint_v and_o teach_v they_o by_o what_o help_n and_o mean_n they_o may_v do_v this_o but_o therefore_o we_o be_v to_o know_v that_o god_n have_v bestow_v this_o privilege_n upon_o his_o child_n over_o and_o beside_o the_o former_a that_o by_o such_o mean_n and_o help_v as_o he_o have_v acquaint_v they_o with_o he_o and_o teach_v they_o to_o use_v they_o may_v be_v able_a to_o enjoy_v the_o foresay_a liberty_n which_o without_o they_o and_o by_o their_o own_o strength_n they_o can_v not_o so_o much_o as_o go_v about_o and_o to_o prevail_v so_o far_o by_o enjoy_v they_o that_o they_o may_v find_v their_o life_n more_o sweet_a and_o comfortable_a than_o other_o can_v in_o what_o estate_n or_o condition_n soever_o if_o they_o have_v not_o their_o part_n in_o they_o and_o that_o it_o may_v be_v see_v that_o these_o help_n be_v privilege_n as_o i_o have_v say_v behold_v it_o brief_o in_o the_o particular_a help_n and_o especial_o such_o be_v to_o be_v use_v daily_o prayer_n as_o for_o example_n what_o a_o benefit_n be_v it_o that_o by_o prayer_n we_o may_v come_v unto_o our_o god_n for_o whatsoever_o we_o have_v need_n of_o that_o be_v good_a for_o we_o and_o may_v obtain_v it_o that_o we_o may_v come_v
power_n of_o the_o devil_n which_o may_v hinder_v they_o from_o it_o but_o all_o believer_n may_v and_o aught_o to_o know_v that_o they_o shall_v have_v eternal_a life_n 5.9_o as_o saint_n john_n
