of_o discontentment_n and_o discomfort_n both_o in_o life_n and_o in_o death_n if_o either_o promotion_n fall_v not_o upon_o they_o according_a to_o their_o desire_n or_o if_o cross_n fall_v upon_o they_o otherwise_o then_o they_o desire_v than_o they_o grow_v malcontented_n they_o care_v not_o to_o live_v and_o yet_o they_o joy_v not_o in_o death_n such_o be_v they_o that_o mind_n earthly_a thing_n but_o mind_n not_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n let_v we_o seek_v to_o be_v at_o peace_n with_o god_n let_v we_o trust_v perfect_o in_o christ_n jesus_n let_v we_o keep_v a_o good_a conscience_n in_o all_o thing_n and_o this_o shall_v make_v both_o life_n and_o death_n comfortable_a unto_o us._n lecture_n xviii_o philip_n i._o verse_n 21._o and_o whether_o to_o live_v in_o the_o flesh_n be_v it_o be_v better_a that_o he_o choose_v life_n verse_n 24._o so_o that_o the_o strait_n be_v hard_a whether_o for_o his_o own_o great_a good_n he_o be_v now_o to_o choose_v death_n or_o for_o their_o great_a good_n he_o be_v to_o choose_v long_a life_n the_o word_n where_o the_o doubt_n be_v move_v be_v diverse_o read_v but_o they_o bear_v well_o this_o read_n i_o follow_v it_o as_o both_o best_a open_v the_o apostle_n meaning_n and_o best_a sort_v with_o that_o which_o follow_v the_o doubt_n be_v whether_o to_o live_v in_o the_o flesh_n or_o in_o the_o body_n be_v profitable_a for_o he_o and_o what_o to_o choose_v life_n or_o death_n but_o be_v in_o a_o wonderful_a strait_n between_o the_o two_o be_v in_o his_o case_n in_o prison_n a_o man_n will_v have_v think_v this_o choice_n shall_v not_o be_v gain_v unto_o christ_n but_o this_o i_o say_v that_o even_o in_o case_n of_o his_o salvation_n and_o they_o for_o the_o love_n of_o his_o people_n he_o shall_v oftentimes_o be_v perplex_v how_o soon_o to_o wish_v his_o salvation_n by_o his_o dissolution_n because_o howsoever_o his_o present_a comfort_n may_v be_v gain_v by_o his_o present_a dissolution_n yet_o their_o salvation_n may_v be_v further_v by_o his_o long_a continuance_n in_o the_o body_n a_o point_n which_o do_v not_o overmuch_o perplex_v many_o pastor_n in_o our_o day_n for_o too_o many_o such_o there_o be_v as_o neither_o care_v for_o their_o own_o salvation_n nor_o for_o their_o people_n look_v only_o to_o fleece_v they_o but_o never_o care_v else_o what_o become_v of_o they_o which_o of_o death_n he_o may_v have_v desire_v life_n yet_o even_o than_o which_o way_n so_o ever_o he_o look_v to_o life_n or_o death_n such_o joy_n and_o comfort_n he_o see_v in_o both_o as_o that_o neither_o the_o grief_n of_o life_n make_v he_o to_o wish_v death_n nor_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n make_v he_o to_o wish_v life_n and_o where_o be_v the_o reason_n though_o his_o case_n many_o way_n be_v hard_a yet_o be_v he_o at_o peace_n with_o god_n through_o jesus_n christ_n his_o lord_n he_o be_v strong_a in_o the_o faith_n of_o christ_n jesus_n who_o god_n set_v forth_o to_o be_v a_o reconciliation_n through_o faith_n in_o his_o blood_n and_o he_o have_v the_o testimony_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n that_o in_o all_o simplicity_n and_o godly_a pureness_n he_o have_v his_o conversation_n in_o the_o world_n and_o therefore_o neâ—ther_o for_o the_o grief_n of_o life_n nor_o for_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n wish_v he_o the_o one_o or_o the_o other_o but_o as_o either_o may_v make_v more_o for_o god_n glory_n he_o be_v indifferent_a unto_o either_o far_o otherwise_o it_o be_v with_o many_o in_o our_o day_n who_o see_v no_o thing_n but_o matter_n of_o discontentment_n and_o discomfort_n both_o in_o life_n and_o in_o death_n for_o so_o it_o be_v with_o many_o of_o we_o that_o if_o either_o promotion_n fall_v not_o upon_o we_o according_a to_o our_o desire_n or_o if_o cross_n fall_v upon_o we_o otherwise_o then_o we_o desire_v than_o we_o grow_v male_a content_v we_o take_v no_o joy_n in_o our_o life_n and_o sometime_o we_o hasten_v our_o own_o death_n and_o again_o many_o of_o we_o if_o any_o way_n we_o be_v summon_v unto_o death_n by_o sickness_n by_o the_o sword_n by_o the_o pestilence_n or_o any_o other_o way_n we_o so_o shrug_v and_o shrink_v for_o fear_n of_o death_n that_o like_a unto_o nabal_n if_o we_o surmise_v any_o danger_n of_o death_n by_o and_o by_o our_o heart_n faint_a and_o die_v within_o we_o 25.37_o 1_o sam._n 25.37_o and_o we_o become_v like_o stone_n no_o comfort_n or_o contentment_n a_o great_a many_o of_o we_o find_v either_o in_o death_n or_o in_o life_n but_o what_o through_o grief_n of_o the_o one_o and_o fear_v of_o the_o other_o we_o be_v often_o out_o of_o love_n with_o the_o one_o and_o with_o the_o other_o and_o the_o reason_n be_v plain_a for_o it_o be_v because_o we_o be_v not_o at_o peace_n with_o god_n nor_o have_v the_o mystery_n of_o faith_n in_o a_o good_a conscience_n we_o feel_v no_o comfort_n in_o our_o god_n through_o our_o reconciliation_n by_o jesus_n christ_n we_o want_v a_o sound_n and_o a_o lively_a faith_n whereby_o we_o shall_v take_v hold_n of_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n make_v in_o christ_n jesus_n and_o a_o bad_a conscience_n so_o trouble_v we_o that_o all_o be_v disquiet_v within_o us._n and_o therefore_o we_o find_v no_o comfort_n or_o contentment_n in_o life_n or_o in_o death_n but_o discomfort_n and_o discontentment_n in_o both_o will_v we_o then_o find_v comfort_n and_o contentment_n in_o both_o whatsoever_o our_o state_n outward_o be_v let_v we_o labour_n to_o be_v at_o peace_n with_o god_n let_v we_o trust_v perfect_o in_o christ_n jesus_n &_o let_v we_o keep_v a_o good_a conscience_n in_o all_o thing_n and_o this_o shall_v make_v both_o life_n and_o death_n comfortable_a unto_o we_o whatsoever_o our_o outward_a estate_n be_v both_o life_n and_o death_n shall_v be_v comfortable_a unto_o we_o if_o we_o have_v peace_n with_o god_n and_o faith_n and_o a_o good_a conscience_n and_o let_v this_o suffice_v to_o be_v observe_v from_o the_o doubt_n which_o the_o apostle_n move_v where_o he_o profess_v that_o he_o know_v not_o what_o to_o choose_v life_n or_o death_n and_o why_o know_v he_o not_o what_o to_o choose_v life_n or_o death_n the_o reason_n hereof_o in_o the_o word_n follow_v be_v say_v to_o be_v because_o on_o both_o side_n there_o be_v such_o reason_n on_o the_o one_o side_n to_o choose_v life_n and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n to_o choose_v death_n that_o he_o be_v in_o a_o wonderful_a strait_n on_o both_o side_n for_o say_v he_o i_o be_o great_o in_o doubt_n or_o i_o be_o in_o a_o wonderful_a strait_n on_o both_o side_n on_o the_o one_o side_n desire_v to_o be_v loose_v from_o the_o prison_n of_o this_o body_n or_o to_o depart_v out_o of_o the_o earthly_a house_n of_o this_o tabernacle_n for_o so_o the_o word_n may_v be_v take_v active_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d or_o passive_o and_o to_o be_v with_o christ_n where_o he_o sit_v at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o god_n which_o say_v he_o be_v best_a of_o all_o viz_o for_o i_o nevertheless_o on_o the_o other_o side_n know_v that_o for_o i_o to_o abide_v in_o the_o flesh_n and_o to_o live_v long_o in_o the_o body_n be_v more_o needful_a for_o you_o that_o you_o may_v enjoy_v the_o fruit_n of_o my_o ministry_n the_o former_a reason_n concern_v himself_o and_o his_o own_o good_a the_o latter_a concern_v the_o philippian_n and_o
become_v the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n whence_o you_o see_v that_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v hypocritical_a or_o frame_v after_o man_n like_n for_o the_o time_n to_o please_v they_o but_o to_o be_v lead_v in_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o lord_n to_o please_v he_o but_o how_o may_v we_o so_o order_v our_o conversation_n that_o it_o may_v be_v such_o as_o become_v the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n that_o the_o apostle_n now_o show_v in_o the_o next_o place_n as_o namely_o if_o we_o continue_v in_o one_o spirit_n if_o we_o sight_n together_o in_o one_o mind_n through_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o gospel_n &_o if_o we_o fear_v our_o adversary_n in_o nothing_o if_o we_o continue_v in_o one_o spirit_n that_o be_v if_o we_o stand_v fast_o and_o abide_v constant_a in_o one_o truth_n of_o christ_n by_o one_o spirit_n wherinto_o we_o be_v all_o baptize_v whence_o i_o observe_v one_o special_a part_n of_o a_o conversation_n agreeable_a to_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n and_o that_o be_v constant_a abide_n in_o the_o truth_n if_o we_o stand_v fast_o and_o abide_v constant_a in_o the_o truth_n this_o be_v one_o note_n that_o our_o conversation_n be_v such_o as_o become_v the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n thing_n submit_v our_o judgement_n unto_o other_o among_o the_o prophet_n and_o preacher_n of_o the_o word_n this_o be_v to_o be_v wish_v that_o in_o the_o practice_n of_o this_o lesson_n we_o will_v about_o they_o what_o peace_n or_o quietness_n can_v we_o have_v in_o our_o mind_n and_o conscience_n the_o peace_n of_o our_o mind_n and_o conscience_n indeed_o consist_v in_o our_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n through_o christ_n in_o our_o justification_n by_o faith_n in_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n as_o the_o apostle_n witness_v in_o the_o place_n before_o allege_v where_o he_o say_v that_o thing_n be_v not_o precise_o the_o cause_n of_o our_o peace_n of_o conscience_n but_o our_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n yet_o we_o see_v the_o promise_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o this_o have_v seize_v upon_o you_o and_o stir_v up_o every_o good_a grace_n of_o god_n in_o you_o quench_v not_o the_o spirit_n that_o be_v within_o you_o but_o strive_v to_o grow_v up_o in_o grace_n and_o not_o from_o want_n of_o good_a will_n towards_o he_o but_o from_o want_n of_o opportunity_n to_o send_v unto_o he_o that_o which_o they_o desire_v whence_o i_o observe_v this_o lesson_n for_o we_o that_o we_o be_v not_o always_o sharp_o to_o censure_v the_o languish_a of_o our_o brethren_n in_o faith_n love_n or_o other_o virtue_n but_o rather_o charitable_o to_o judge_v of_o they_o and_o so_o much_o as_o in_o a_o good_a conscience_n we_o may_v to_o salve_v and_o excuse_v they_o by_o a_o kind_n and_o favourable_a interpretation_n not_o the_o best_a but_o they_o have_v their_o infirmity_n through_o which_o sometime_o they_o so_o fall_v that_o they_o seem_v almost_o to_o be_v dead_a as_o already_o we_o have_v hear_v both_o omit_v to_o do_v such_o thing_n as_o they_o shall_v do_v and_o commit_v such_o thing_n as_o they_o shall_v not_o do_v but_o many_o cause_n there_o may_v be_v of_o such_o fail_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o christian_a duty_n a_o defect_n there_o may_v be_v of_o zeal_n yet_o proceed_v rather_o from_o fear_n of_o disturb_v the_o peace_n of_o the_o church_n then_o from_o want_n of_o inflame_a desire_n to_o see_v the_o house_n of_o the_o lord_n wall_n &_o roof_n build_v up_o in_o perfect_a beauty_n a_o defect_n there_o may_v be_v of_o charity_n yet_o proceed_v rather_o from_o want_n of_o opportunity_n then_o from_o want_n of_o will_n to_o perform_v that_o duty_n and_o so_o in_o other_o thing_n cause_n sometime_o may_v be_v presume_v to_o be_v of_o such_o and_o such_o fault_n which_o may_v excuse_v the_o fault_n and_o therefore_o we_o be_v charitable_o to_o judge_v of_o the_o fault_n of_o our_o brethren_n and_o rather_o in_o charity_n presume_v of_o that_o excuse_n for_o they_o which_o may_v be_v allege_v then_o by_o sharp_a censure_n to_o condemn_v they_o who_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o condemn_v where_o yet_o we_o must_v have_v these_o caveat_n first_o that_o we_o deny_v not_o that_o to_o be_v evil_a which_o be_v evil_a that_o to_o be_v sin_n which_o be_v sin_n as_o they_o do_v that_o deny_v abraham_n to_o have_v lie_v when_o he_o say_v of_o sarah_n she_o be_v my_o sister_n that_o deny_v joseph_n to_o have_v swear_v when_o so_o often_o he_o protest_v unto_o his_o brethren_n by_o the_o life_n of_o pharaoh_n that_o deny_v peter_n to_o have_v sin_v at_o the_o least_o mortal_o when_o paul_n withstand_v he_o to_o his_o face_n and_o they_o likewise_o that_o say_v of_o pride_n it_o be_v cleanliness_n of_o covetousness_n it_o be_v thrift_n of_o deceit_n and_o fraud_n it_o be_v wisdom_n of_o hypocrisy_n it_o be_v courteous_a humanity_n of_o lascivious_a wantonness_n it_o be_v requisite_a cheerfulness_n and_o the_o like_a for_o this_o be_v not_o charitable_o to_o bear_v with_o a_o fault_n charity_n be_v as_o not_o suspicious_a so_o not_o foolish_a to_o deny_v that_o to_o be_v evil_a which_o be_v evil_a neither_o be_v it_o to_o excuse_v but_o only_o by_o a_o lie_n the_o second_o caveat_n be_v that_o we_o do_v not_o far_o excuse_v the_o fault_n and_o infirmity_n of_o any_o then_o in_o a_o good_a conscience_n we_o may_v for_o if_o through_o favour_n or_o affection_n or_o how_o else_o soever_o we_o do_v so_o what_o good_a soever_o we_o shall_v do_v thereby_o unto_o other_o sure_o we_o shall_v do_v great_a wrong_n unto_o our_o own_o soul_n and_o howsoever_o haply_o we_o brook_v it_o for_o a_o time_n too_o too_o light_a and_o slight_a term_n pass_v over_o notorious_a and_o gross_a fault_n for_o a_o generation_n of_o man_n there_o be_v that_o to_o the_o end_n forsooth_o that_o they_o may_v seem_v charitable_a in_o their_o judgement_n towards_o their_o brethren_n speak_v good_a of_o that_o which_o plain_o be_v evil_a and_o interpret_v that_o unto_o the_o best_a which_o in_o plain_a evidence_n be_v sinful_a and_o wicked_a what_o must_v charity_n be_v a_o fool_n as_o she_o be_v not_o suspicious_a so_o she_o be_v not_o foolish_a as_o she_o will_v not_o easy_o think_v the_o worst_a so_o she_o will_v not_o suffer_v herself_o to_o be_v abuse_v for_o if_o when_o a_o man_n shall_v be_v present_a at_o the_o sermon_n he_o be_v ordinary_o bowl_v or_o card_v or_o drink_v must_v i_o in_o charity_n think_v that_o he_o have_v necessary_a occasion_n of_o absence_n or_o when_o a_o man_n willing_o and_o witting_o run_v himself_o upon_o the_o rock_n by_o break_v the_o wholesome_a law_n of_o god_n or_o of_o man_n be_o i_o uncharitable_a if_o i_o interpret_v not_o his_o action_n unto_o the_o best_a nay_o rather_o he_o misdeem_v of_o charity_n that_o so_o think_v and_o this_o will_v common_o if_o it_o be_v mark_v fall_v out_o to_o be_v true_a that_o he_o that_o so_o urge_v a_o charitable_a judgement_n touch_v such_o thing_n and_o such_o man_n as_o offend_v these_o and_o the_o like_a way_n will_v be_v most_o uncharitable_a in_o his_o judgement_n touch_v the_o best_a man_n and_o the_o best_a thing_n as_o therefore_o we_o be_v not_o too_o sharp_o to_o censure_v the_o fall_v of_o our_o brethren_n lest_o we_o offend_v against_o the_o rule_n of_o charity_n so_o let_v we_o take_v heed_n lest_o upon_o a_o foolish_a conceit_n of_o charity_n we_o think_v well_o of_o that_o which_o indeed_o be_v evil_a and_o soothe_v they_o up_o in_o their_o sin_n who_o sin_n be_v to_o be_v reprove_v as_o the_o preacher_n say_v 7.18.19_o eccl._n 7.18.19_o be_v not_o thou_o just_a overmuch_o and_o again_o be_v not_o thou_o wicked_a overmuch_o so_o i_o say_v let_v we_o not_o too_o sharp_o censure_v the_o fault_n of_o our_o brethren_n and_o again_o let_v we_o not_o too_o light_o pass_v fault_n let_v we_o not_o condemn_v where_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o condemn_v and_o again_o let_v we_o not_o acquit_v where_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o acquit_v three_o here_o be_v to_o be_v reprove_v and_o condemn_v such_o as_o to_o excuse_v the_o fault_n and_o offence_n of_o other_o say_v and_o do_v more_o than_o in_o a_o good_a conscience_n they_o may_v for_o as_o i_o be_o not_o always_o to_o condemn_v those_o man_n that_o do_v such_o thing_n as_o wicked_a and_o ungodly_a man_n nor_o yet_o to_o acquit_v all_o those_o that_o do_v such_o thing_n as_o good_a and_o godly_a man_n so_o neither_o be_o i_o to_o excuse_v one_o sort_n or_o other_o further_o than_o in_o a_o good_a conscience_n i_o may_v charity_n must_v rule_v i_o to_o excuse_v as_o i_o may_v affection_n may_v not_o over-rule_v i_o to_o excuse_v more_o than_o i_o shall_v albeit_o therefore_o to_o excuse_v the_o fault_n of_o man_n may_v seem_v a_o very_a charitable_a fault_n yet_o if_o in_o any_o respect_n we_o do_v therein_o more_o than_o in_o a_o good_a conscience_n we_o may_v our_o fault_n be_v inexcusable_a and_o our_o judgement_n sleep_v not_o let_v we_o therefore_o go_v so_o far_o in_o the_o excuse_n of_o our_o brethren_n fault_n as_o in_o a_o good_a conscience_n we_o may_v but_o no_o further_o let_v we_o be_v ready_a to_o make_v the_o best_a of_o thing_n we_o may_v but_o let_v we_o ever_o remember_v to_o hold_v faith_n and_o a_o good_a conscience_n and_o let_v this_o suffice_v to_o be_v note_v from_o the_o several_a point_n in_o these_o word_n i_o speak_v not_o etc._n etc._n the_o apostle_n have_v signify_v in_o the_o former_a verse_n his_o great_a rejoice_v in_o the_o lord_n for_o the_o philippian_n care_v over_o he_o now_o signify_v his_o rejoice_a to_o be_v not_o so_o much_o for_o the_o present_a gift_n they_o send_v he_o because_o therewith_o his_o want_n be_v supply_v as_o for_o their_o sake_n even_o for_o the_o fruit_n which_o shall_v redound_v thence_o unto_o they_o which_o he_o do_v from_o the_o eleven_o to_o the_o eighteen_o verse_n first_o therefore_o to_o meet_v with_o the_o suspicion_n of_o a_o covetous_a or_o a_o abject_a mind_n he_o deni_v that_o he_o rejoice_v so_o great_o for_o the_o gift_n because_o by_o it_o his_o want_n be_v supply_v and_o yield_v a_o reason_n thereof_o even_o because_o he_o have_v learned_a to_o be_v content_a with_o know_v that_o poverty_n and_o riches_n even_o both_o these_o be_v from_o the_o lord_n who_o make_v poor_a and_o make_v rich_a and_o that_o all_o thing_n work_v together_o for_o the_o best_a unto_o those_o that_o love_n and_o fear_v the_o lord_n and_o therefore_o they_o hang_v not_o down_o their_o head_n nor_o be_v casten_z down_o through_o heaviness_n they_o murmur_v not_o at_o the_o lord_n nor_o break_v out_o into_o impatience_n but_o patient_o depend_v upon_o that_o god_n that_o command_v the_o raven_n to_o feed_v his_o prophet_n elias_n and_o that_o feed_v the_o young_a raven_n that_o through_o their_o want_n povertie_n or_o riches_n be_v no_o certain_a argument_n of_o the_o love_n or_o of_o the_o hatred_n of_o god_n towards_o any_o both_o be_v mercy_n and_o blessing_n of_o the_o lord_n unto_o the_o godly_a and_o both_o be_v plague_n and_o snare_n unto_o the_o wicked_a by_o poverty_n and_o want_v the_o godly_a be_v oftentimes_o try_v to_o see_v whether_o they_o will_v blaspheme_v god_n to_o his_o face_n whether_o they_o will_v murmur_v against_o the_o lord_n whether_o they_o can_v be_v content_a as_o to_o receive_v good_a at_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n so_o to_o receive_v evil_a whether_o in_o time_n of_o adversity_n they_o will_v go_v away_o from_o the_o lord_n by_o riches_n likewise_o the_o godly_a be_v often_o try_v to_o see_v whether_o they_o will_v thereby_o grow_v proud_a and_o forget_v the_o lord_n whether_o they_o will_v as_o good_a steward_n use_v they_o to_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o name_n and_o the_o good_a of_o their_o brethren_n whether_o they_o will_v bear_v themselves_o as_o enrich_v by_o he_o and_o make_v he_o their_o chief_a treasure_n both_o these_o i_o say_v be_v trial_n unto_o the_o godly_a that_o the_o trial_n of_o their_o faith_n may_v be_v find_v to_o their_o praise_n and_o honour_n and_o glory_n at_o the_o appear_v of_o christ_n jesus_n again_o poverty_n be_v often_o lay_v upon_o the_o wicked_a for_o a_o
