explication_n and_o proof_n it_o be_v even_o of_o itself_o evident_a to_o be_v so_o indeed_o for_o see_v god_n himself_o have_v rend_v the_o veil_n and_o that_o also_o even_o from_o the_o top_n to_o the_o bottom_n what_o reason_n or_o authority_n can_v any_o man_n have_v to_o go_v about_o to_o sow_v it_o again_o and_o much_o less_o can_v any_o have_v any_o find_a reason_n or_o lawful_a authority_n to_o hang_v up_o another_o veil_n in_o stead_n of_o it_o this_o have_v be_v lay_v open_o more_o at_o large_a in_o the_o interpretation_n and_o therefore_o we_o will_v not_o stay_v any_o long_o upon_o it_o at_o this_o time_n question_n but_o be_v there_o no_o other_o duty_n require_v answer_n insomuch_o as_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n both_o the_o kingdom_n of_o grace_n and_o also_o the_o kingdom_n of_o glory_n be_v lay_v more_o open_a unto_o we_o by_o our_o saviour_n christ_n then_o ever_o it_o be_v under_o the_o law_n as_o the_o rend_n of_o the_o veil_n give_v to_o understand_v we_o ought_v therefore_o to_o be_v so_o much_o the_o more_o careful_a not_o only_o to_o make_v our_o entrance_n into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o grace_n but_o also_o to_o continue_v and_o faith_n even_o to_o the_o heavenly_a throne_n of_o god_n grace_n if_o we_o shall_v rush_v immediate_o to_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o god_n without_o faith_n in_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o death_n &_o without_o humiliation_n in_o cast_v down_o of_o ourselves_o we_o may_v just_o look_v for_o the_o repulse_n yea_o for_o a_o mighty_a fall_n as_o a_o just_a punishment_n of_o such_o our_o inordinate_a presumption_n and_o pride_n the_o only_a lawful_a and_o allow_a mediator_n for_o we_o unto_o god_n be_v our_o saviour_n christ_n and_o if_o we_o will_v needs_o have_v a_o mediator_n for_o we_o unto_o our_o saviour_n himself_o be_v now_o in_o heaven_n what_o other_o can_v we_o have_v or_o any_o way_n look_v for_o than_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n in_o that_o he_o have_v thereby_o already_o make_v request_n for_o we_o unto_o god_n in_o the_o day_n of_o his_o humiliation_n here_o upon_o earth_n and_o namely_o in_o the_o time_n of_o his_o most_o bitter_a suffering_n upon_o the_o cross_n that_o be_v to_o say_v we_o neither_o can_v have_v neither_o may_v we_o look_v for_o any_o other_o mediator_n to_o christ_n than_o christ_n humble_v to_o christ_n exalt_v if_o we_o will_v with_o the_o papist_n look_v after_o any_o other_o mediator_n or_o any_o other_o mediation_n to_o god_n for_o we_o we_o shall_v with_o they_o vain_o and_o foolish_o deceive_v our_o own_o self_n and_o herein_o i_o beseech_v you_o let_v every_o one_o of_o we_o labour_n so_o strengthen_v our_o faith_n because_o doubtless_o the_o want_n of_o faith_n in_o this_o point_n have_v bring_v most_o gross_a idolatry_n into_o the_o church_n of_o god_n for_o who_o have_v learn_v to_o behold_v our_o saviour_n a_o everlasting_a and_o perpetual_a mediator_n for_o he_o at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o god_n by_o the_o eye_n of_o his_o faith_n will_v be_v so_o base_a mind_v as_o to_o set_v up_o a_o dead_a and_o dumb_a idol_n or_o once_o vouchsafe_v to_o cast_v a_o eye_n towards_o it_o be_v set_v up_o and_o fasten_v to_o the_o wall_n before_o he_o by_o any_o other_o moreover_o as_o touch_v our_o own_o prayer_n or_o any_o other_o duty_n and_o service_n that_o we_o can_v any_o way_n perform_v we_o must_v take_v religious_a heed_n that_o we_o do_v not_o trust_v to_o any_o godliness_n or_o devotion_n that_o we_o imagine_v and_o persuade_v ourselves_o to_o be_v therein_o but_o rather_o evermore_o to_o humble_v ourselves_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o the_o imperfection_n thereof_o and_o look_v what_o grace_n and_o godliness_n there_o be_v in_o any_o and_o namely_o the_o grace_n of_o prayer_n it_o be_v our_o duty_n to_o acknowledge_v that_o it_o be_v not_o of_o ourselves_o but_o of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n neither_o be_v we_o to_o think_v that_o any_o prayer_n which_o we_o make_v be_v hear_v nor_o any_o other_o duty_n accept_v for_o any_o worthiness_n of_o we_o but_o because_o the_o holy_a ghost_n raise_v up_o sigh_n and_o groan_n in_o we_o and_o make_v request_n for_o we_o unto_o god_n together_o with_o our_o saviour_n christ_n rom._n 8.26.27_o and_o revel_v 8.3.4_o and_o even_o this_o that_o we_o have_v the_o grace_n to_o offer_v up_o our_o prayer_n unto_o god_n it_o be_v a_o fruit_n of_o our_o saviour_n heavenly_a intercession_n for_o us._n and_o the_o same_o grace_n also_o of_o our_o care_n to_o make_v our_o prayer_n to_o god_n in_o the_o name_n of_o our_o saviour_n here_o from_o earth_n it_o may_v be_v a_o good_a proof_n unto_o we_o that_o our_o saviour_n be_v a_o intercessor_n in_o heaven_n for_o us._n but_o our_o manifold_a fail_n both_o in_o prayer_n and_o in_o all_o other_o duty_n ought_v just_o to_o cause_v we_o unfeigned_o to_o acknowledge_v ourselves_o even_o when_o we_o be_v at_o the_o best_a to_o be_v but_o unprofitable_a servant_n luk._n 17._o verse_n 10._o and_o commandment_n three_o obedience_n and_o submission_n to_o those_o that_o rule_n over_o the_o rest_n in_o his_o name_n both_o civil_a magistrate_n and_o church_n governor_n yea_o all_o good_a pleasure_n of_o god_n and_o as_o may_v be_v most_o comfortable_a to_o such_o as_o belong_v unto_o he_o far_o ought_v our_o heart_n to_o be_v from_o mind_v &_o our_o hand_n from_o do_v that_o amen_n and_o thus_o we_o do_v see_v how_o large_a a_o field_n as_o it_o be_v our_o saviour_n christ_n have_v to_o hold_v out_o a_o good_a long_a walk_n with_o his_o two_o disciple_n and_o what_o a_o large_a fruit_n they_o reap_v from_o that_o care_n which_o they_o themselves_o have_v to_o talk_v and_o confer_v together_o to_o the_o end_n that_o as_o well_o as_o they_o can_v one_o may_v help_v another_o against_o the_o doubt_n of_o their_o faith_n and_o against_o the_o heavy_a sorrow_n and_o grief_n of_o their_o heart_n for_o behold_v our_o saviour_n of_o his_o most_o tender_a compassion_n step_v in_o and_o break_v off_o this_o their_o heaviness_n and_o give_v they_o a_o clear_a direction_n to_o the_o chase_v away_o of_o every_o scruple_n out_o of_o their_o mind_n from_o the_o warrant_n the_o better_n of_o our_o knowledge_n and_o faith_n in_o our_o saviour_n christ_n to_o the_o quiet_v of_o our_o mind_n in_o the_o peace_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n before_o god_n in_o the_o comfortable_a assurance_n of_o our_o salvation_n above_o all_o other_o thing_n and_o then_o assure_o we_o shall_v find_v our_o saviour_n in_o due_a time_n to_o be_v as_o gracious_a to_o we_o as_o he_o be_v unto_o they_o while_o he_o shall_v find_v we_o walk_v in_o his_o way_n but_o all_o this_o while_n as_o the_o evangelist_n give_v we_o to_o understand_v our_o saviour_n have_v not_o yet_o make_v himself_o know_v to_o these_o his_o disciple_n how_o then_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o immediate_o uâ—on_v this_o holy_a discourse_n of_o his_o be_v end_v he_o make_v as_o if_o he_o will_v have_v present_o depart_v from_o they_o &_o not_o to_o have_v make_v himself_o know_v to_o they_o at_o all_o for_o so_o it_o follow_v in_o our_o text_n verse_n 28._o they_o draw_v near_o unto_o the_o town_n answer_n it_o may_v be_v think_v that_o he_o do_v so_o for_o two_o cause_n first_o to_o let_v we_o to_o understand_v that_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v of_o itself_o a_o sufficient_a stay_n to_o our_o faith_n and_o therefore_o that_o these_o his_o disciple_n ought_v to_o have_v rest_v full_o satisfy_v albeit_o our_o saviour_n have_v not_o make_v himself_o bodily_a know_v unto_o they_o to_o explication_n explication_n nothing_o let_v indeed_o why_o we_o may_v not_o think_v so_o herein_o therefore_o let_v we_o reverendly_a observe_v the_o singular_a wisdom_n and_o most_o tender_a love_n of_o our_o saviour_n towards_o these_o his_o disciple_n and_o in_o they_o to_o we_o and_o all_o other_o of_o his_o people_n whosoever_o will_v yield_v to_o be_v disciple_n &_o scholar_n unto_o he_o as_o for_o that_o which_o some_o make_v question_n of_o how_o it_o may_v agree_v with_o the_o perfect_a simplicity_n &_o truth_n of_o our_o saviour_n deal_n that_o he_o shall_v pretend_v to_o depart_v from_o his_o disciple_n before_o he_o have_v make_v himself_o know_v to_o they_o when_o he_o come_v to_o they_o with_o a_o purpose_n to_o make_v himself_o know_v before_o he_o will_v depart_v from_o they_o it_o may_v easy_o be_v answer_v from_o that_o which_o have_v be_v say_v already_o and_o beside_o we_o may_v well_o think_v that_o our_o saviour_n do_v not_o so_o light_o offer_v to_o depart_v but_o that_o it_o may_v well_o stand_v with_o his_o purpose_n to_o depart_v indeed_o if_o his_o disciple_n have_v not_o earnest_o entreat_v he_o to_o stay_v with_o they_o though_o he_o have_v in_o the_o evening_n or_o the_o next_o day_n come_v to_o they_o again_o so_o we_o read_v that_o the_o holy_a angel_n refuse_v to_o go_v with_o lot_n into_o his_o house_n until_o lot_n be_v very_o earnest_a with_o they_o for_o as_o the_o text_n say_v gen_n 19.2.3_o they_o say_v we_o will_v abide_v in_o the_o street_n all_o night_n yet_o when_o lot_n press_v upon_o they_o earnest_o they_o turn_v unto_o he_o &_o come_v to_o his_o house_n &_o abode_n with_o he_o moreover_o when_o we_o do_v not_o blame_v joseph_n but_o rather_o marvel_v at_o his_o wisdom_n in_o that_o he_o do_v not_o by_o &_o by_o make_v himself_o know_v to_o his_o unkind_a brethren_n what_o reason_n have_v we_o why_o we_o shall_v not_o conceive_v most_o honourable_o of_o the_o course_n of_o our_o saviour_n deal_n in_o the_o present_a case_n simplicity_n &_o uprightness_n do_v not_o take_v away_o godly_a policy_n and_o discretion_n from_o the_o action_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n or_o his_o servant_n they_o must_v both_o go_v as_o it_o be_v hand_n in_o hand_n together_o simplicity_n without_o godly_a wisdom_n be_v in_o many_o case_n no_o better_o then_o mere_a folly_n like_v as_o wisdom_n or_o policy_n without_o godly_a simplicity_n &_o uprightness_n of_o heart_n both_o towards_o god_n &_o his_o people_n it_o do_v easy_o degenerate_a into_o extreme_a craft_n &_o devilish_a subtlety_n and_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n himself_o give_v his_o precept_n in_o most_o excellent_a wisdom_n be_v wise_a as_o serpent_n and_o simple_a as_o dove_n but_o enough_o of_o this_o upon_o the_o present_a occasion_n for_o it_o may_v seem_v a_o dishonour_n to_o our_o saviour_n that_o we_o shall_v be_v much_o in_o this_o point_n as_o though_o his_o deal_n be_v such_o as_o that_o it_o need_v any_o long_a or_o great_a labour_a defence_n question_n to_o come_v therefore_o to_o the_o issue_n of_o the_o matter_n how_o do_v our_o saviour_n christ_n make_v himself_o know_v to_o these_o his_o two_o disciple_n at_o the_o last_o answer_n ch_z 24._o the_o evangelist_n show_v we_o how_o he_o do_v it_o in_o the_o 30_o &_o 31._o verse_n as_o it_o follow_v thus_o in_o the_o text_n 30._o and_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o as_o he_o sit_v at_o table_n with_o they_o he_o take_v the_o bread_n and_o give_v thanks_n and_o break_v it_o and_o give_v it_o to_o they_o 31._o then_o say_v the_o evangelist_n their_o eye_n be_v open_v and_o they_o know_v he_o but_o he_o be_v take_v out_o of_o their_o sight_n explication_n explication_n in_o these_o word_n we_o have_v not_o only_o the_o gracious_a manifestation_n of_o our_o saviour_n record_v but_o also_o his_o miraculous_a departure_n let_v we_o therefore_o consider_v of_o either_o of_o they_o in_o the_o manifestation_n of_o our_o saviour_n we_o be_v to_o observe_v two_o thing_n first_o the_o action_n of_o our_o saviour_n whereby_o he_o make_v himself_o know_v second_o the_o open_n of_o the_o disciple_n eye_n and_o both_o these_o concur_v and_o meet_v together_o so_o that_o they_o know_v both_o by_o their_o sight_n and_o also_o by_o their_o hear_n that_o it_o be_v very_o our_o saviour_n that_o be_v then_o with_o they_o and_o who_o have_v all_o the_o while_n in_o their_o journey_n talk_v with_o they_o before_o but_o let_v we_o stand_v to_o consider_v a_o little_a of_o these_o thing_n from_o the_o word_n of_o the_o text_n and_o first_o of_o the_o action_n of_o our_o saviour_n question_n what_o be_v that_o answer_n the_o action_n whereby_o our_o saviour_n make_v himself_o know_v be_v no_o doubt_n principal_o his_o most_o reverend_a thanksgiving_n which_o he_o give_v unto_o god_n in_o break_v of_o bread_n when_o they_o sit_v down_o to_o supper_n proof_n explication_n &_o proof_n no_o doubt_v it_o be_v so_o for_o so_o do_v the_o disciple_n themselves_o acknowledge_v as_o we_o read_v in_o the_o 35._o verse_n of_o the_o chapter_n they_o tell_v the_o rest_n of_o the_o disciple_n say_v the_o evangelist_n how_o he_o be_v know_v of_o they_o in_o break_v of_o bread_n that_o be_v when_o he_o break_v bread_n not_o by_o the_o break_n of_o bread_n itself_o but_o by_o that_o principal_a action_n of_o thanksgiving_n which_o our_o saviour_n
death_n yea_o either_o everlasting_a life_n or_o eternal_a death_n both_o of_o the_o body_n &_o soul_n be_v thus_o set_v before_o we_o in_o the_o gospel_n even_o before_o we_o here_o present_a as_o well_o as_o before_o any_o other_o to_o who_o the_o gospel_n have_v in_o any_o place_n be_v at_o any_o time_n send_v by_o the_o holy_a providence_n of_o god_n let_v we_o therefore_o i_o beseech_v &_o admonish_v you_o in_o the_o lord_n that_o you_o be_v most_o careful_a to_o make_v good_a use_n of_o these_o most_o grave_a and_o weighty_a word_n of_o our_o saviour_n which_o be_v as_o we_o see_v a_o part_n of_o one_o of_o the_o very_a last_o speech_n which_o he_o speak_v to_o his_o apostle_n for_o assure_o by_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o word_n of_o christ_n i_o may_v &_o do_v stand_v bind_v to_o affirm_v &_o pronounce_v unto_o you_o both_o concern_v myself_o &_o every_o of_o you_o that_o if_o we_o will_v true_o believe_v the_o gospel_n which_o be_v the_o gospel_n of_o salvation_n preach_v unto_o we_o we_o shall_v certain_o be_v save_v yea_o even_o as_o certain_o as_o god_n be_v both_o tâ—â—e_n aâ—d_v faithful_a and_o also_o able_a and_o willing_a to_o do_v it_o but_o if_o any_o of_o we_o or_o all_o of_o we_o shall_v not_o believe_v and_o so_o continue_v &_o die_v in_o our_o unbelief_n it_o be_v of_o like_a certainty_n that_o we_o shall_v undoubted_o be_v damn_v even_o because_o the_o gospel_n be_v send_v unto_o we_o we_o have_v not_o believe_v it_o that_o we_o may_v repent_v and_o be_v save_v not_o that_o the_o gospel_n do_v in_o the_o own_o nature_n work_v any_o other_o effect_n then_o salvation_n as_o have_v be_v declare_v not_o long_o since_o but_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o unbelief_n &_o contrary_a disposition_n of_o those_o that_o do_v hear_v it_o as_o it_o be_v evident_a john_n 3.17_o god_n send_v not_o his_o son_n into_o the_o world_n that_o he_o shall_v condemn_v the_o world_n but_o that_o the_o world_n through_o he_o may_v be_v save_v he_o that_o believe_v in_o he_o shall_v not_o be_v condemn_v but_o he_o that_o believe_v not_o be_v condemn_v already_o because_o he_o believe_v not_o in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o only_o beget_v son_n of_o god_n now_o therefore_o touch_v these_o word_n of_o our_o saviour_n they_o may_v notable_o serve_v to_o these_o three_o or_o four_o excellent_a end_n first_o to_o encourage_v all_o faithful_a minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n even_o to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n that_o their_o labour_n in_o the_o preach_n of_o it_o shall_v not_o be_v in_o vain_a but_o shall_v still_o have_v mighty_a effect_n according_a to_o the_o end_n whereunto_o god_n have_v appoint_v it_o yea_o like_a effect_n touch_v conversion_n of_o soul_n to_o those_o which_o be_v speak_v of_o by_o our_o saviour_n to_o the_o encouragement_n of_o his_o apostle_n for_o the_o time_n of_o their_o ministry_n in_o the_o first_o publish_v of_o it_o though_o to_o the_o encouragement_n of_o these_o indeed_o for_o the_o sound_n as_o it_o be_v and_o plant_v of_o church_n and_o to_o the_o rest_n for_o the_o water_v of_o their_o plant_n and_o for_o the_o raise_n up_o of_o the_o building_n from_o that_o foundation_n which_o they_o have_v lay_v second_o these_o word_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v of_o excellent_a use_n sweet_o to_o allure_v and_o draw_v the_o mind_n of_o all_o the_o elect_a child_n of_o god_n to_o a_o most_o willing_a &_o careful_a harken_v and_o attend_v to_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o unto_o that_o which_o god_n have_v appoint_v to_o be_v the_o instrument_n of_o his_o divine_a power_n to_o their_o most_o bless_a &_o endless_a salvation_n in_o that_o they_o believe_v the_o same_o to_o the_o which_o end_n also_o just_o may_v the_o most_o fearful_a threaten_n of_o eternal_a condemnation_n to_o all_o unbeliever_n be_v as_o a_o spur_n to_o the_o child_n of_o god_n to_o chase_v away_o all_o dulness_n and_o drowsiness_n or_o negligence_n in_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o move_v every_o true_a believer_n to_o these_o duty_n follow_v first_o to_o make_v little_a account_n of_o this_o transitory_a life_n or_o of_o any_o or_o all_o the_o vain_a profit_n pleasure_n and_o honour_n thereof_o in_o comparison_n of_o it_o second_o the_o faith_n and_o assurance_n of_o everlasting_a life_n be_v likewise_o most_o effectual_a to_o move_v all_o christian_n that_o have_v already_o make_v a_o entrance_n into_o it_o with_o all_o holy_a care_n and_o good_a conscience_n to_o cherish_v the_o beginning_n thereof_o and_o to_o walk_v on_o forward_o in_o the_o right_a way_n which_o lead_v to_o the_o full_a fruition_n of_o it_o and_o thereafter_o to_o bend_v all_o counsel_n study_n and_o desire_n as_o to_o the_o only_a true_a scope_n and_o mark_v to_o be_v aim_v at_o in_o the_o whole_a course_n of_o our_o natural_a life_n so_o that_o god_n may_v have_v the_o whole_a praise_n and_o glory_n of_o all_o three_o it_o imbolden_v the_o faithful_a servant_n of_o god_n to_o make_v little_a account_n of_o all_o the_o bitter_a affliction_n of_o this_o life_n so_o as_o they_o may_v by_o any_o mean_n attain_v to_o this_o everlasting_a life_n and_o the_o most_o pure_a and_o bless_a joy_n thereof_o four_o it_o have_v singular_a force_n spiritual_o to_o enamour_v the_o heart_n of_o all_o true_a believer_n with_o a_o most_o earnest_a desire_n and_o long_v after_o it_o and_o therewithal_o after_o the_o restore_n of_o all_o thing_n which_o god_n have_v purpose_v at_o that_o time_n to_o restore_v that_o the_o same_o our_o god_n may_v then_o be_v all_o in_o all_o five_o see_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o preach_v thereof_o be_v the_o principal_a mean_n to_o bring_v we_o to_o the_o knowledge_n faith_n and_o spiritual_a possession_n of_o the_o beginning_n and_o as_o it_o be_v first_o fruit_n of_o this_o so_o unspeakable_a and_o incomprehensible_a a_o benefit_n and_o inheritance_n purchase_v for_o we_o by_o our_o saviour_n christ_n it_o can_v be_v but_o it_o must_v mighty_o provoke_v all_o true_a christian_n to_o love_v this_o word_n of_o god_n and_o the_o preach_a and_o preacher_n of_o it_o but_o chief_o our_o saviour_n himself_o who_o be_v preach_v unto_o they_o and_o who_o have_v give_v himself_o for_o we_o all_o with_o most_o hearty_a love_n and_o zealous_a affection_n final_o insomuch_o as_o we_o can_v sufficient_o praise_v and_o glorify_v god_n for_o this_o inestimable_a benefit_n in_o the_o short_a race_n of_o this_o our_o natural_a life_n therefore_o it_o be_v our_o duty_n to_o purpose_n and_o desire_v most_o earnest_o not_o only_o to_o glorify_v his_o name_n while_o we_o live_v here_o but_o also_o even_o for_o the_o same_o cause_n chief_o to_o desire_v to_o live_v for_o ever_o to_o the_o end_n we_o may_v praise_v and_o glorify_v he_o with_o all_o his_o saint_n for_o this_o inestimable_a benefit_n world_n without_o end_n proof_n explication_n &_o proof_n it_o can_v be_v deny_v but_o that_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v so_o yea_o very_o the_o true_a faith_n and_o persuasion_n of_o the_o inheritance_n of_o everlasting_a life_n can_v but_o work_v all_o these_o gracious_a and_o bless_a effect_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o all_o true_a christian_n and_o first_o of_o all_o as_o touch_v the_o first_o effect_n and_o that_o also_o with_o very_o good_a reason_n why_o it_o shall_v be_v so_o what_o may_v we_o think_v these_o earthly_a and_o vanish_v riches_n to_o be_v but_o only_o a_o shadow_n of_o riches_n in_o comparison_n of_o the_o durable_a treasure_n of_o heavenly_a and_o eternal_a happiness_n what_o be_v all_o carnal_a pleasure_n which_o flit_v in_o a_o moment_n &_o be_v so_o much_o the_o soon_o at_o a_o end_n by_o how_o much_o they_o be_v more_o vehement_a what_o be_v they_o i_o say_v be_v compare_v with_o this_o most_o pure_a and_o spiritual_a joy_n which_o abide_v in_o all_o holy_a perfection_n for_o ever_o what_o be_v all_o earthly_a honour_n and_o all_o worldly_a ensign_n
