why_o this_o control_v their_o profit_n how_o few_o will_v suffer_v or_o sit_v down_o with_o a_o wrong_n without_o repay_v though_o the_o scripture_n be_v most_o express_a o_o this_o touch_v they_o in_o their_o great_a idol_n their_o credit_n and_o for_o this_o same_o reason_n how_o many_o decline_v good_a duty_n not_o make_v their_o light_a shine_n before_o man_n he_o that_o be_v ashamed_a of_o i_o before_o man_n etc._n etc._n all_o this_o be_v against_o the_o rule_n then_o shall_v i_o not_o be_v ashamed_a when_o i_o have_v respect_n to_o all_o thy_o commandment_n 4._o he_o who_o obedience_n be_v sound_a make_v conscience_n not_o only_o of_o the_o do_v of_o a_o duty_n but_o also_o of_o the_o manner_n of_o the_o do_v of_o it_o and_o be_v humble_v for_o his_o fail_n in_o the_o manner_n as_o well_o as_o for_o the_o omission_n but_o the_o hypocrite_n so_o he_o do_v the_o duty_n he_o regard_v not_o the_o manner_n he_o care_v not_o for_o it_o so_o he_o pray_v hear_v read_v he_o rest_v there_o but_o care_v not_o to_o do_v all_o these_o with_o that_o reverence_n cheerfulness_n diligence_n humility_n sincerity_n which_o the_o lord_n require_v in_o the_o discharge_n of_o his_o worship_n he_o remember_v not_o the_o rule_n the_o way_n of_o a_o man_n seem_v good_a in_o his_o own_o eye_n but_o the_o lord_n ponder_v the_o heart_n but_o especial_o in_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o obedience_n we_o shall_v look_v to_o the_o motive_n and_o end_n of_o our_o obedience_n to_o that_o which_o put_v we_o on_o to_o do_v it_o and_o which_o we_o set_v before_o our_o eye_n that_o it_o be_v not_o a_o wrong_a motive_n but_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n yea_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o the_o end_n to_o please_v god_n and_o not_o ourselves_o or_o other_o but_o of_o this_o hereafter_o a_o second_o mark_v of_o faith_n be_v the_o love_n of_o god_n child_n by_o this_o we_o know_v that_o we_o be_v translate_v from_o death_n to_o life_n if_o we_o love_v the_o brethren_n and_o if_o it_o be_v a_o real_a love_n hereby_o we_o assure_v ourselves_o before_o he_o david_n say_v all_o his_o delight_n be_v this_o way_n this_o be_v a_o mark_n which_o have_v uphold_v many_o when_o they_o have_v be_v at_o a_o very_a low_a ebb_n and_o when_o other_o mark_n have_v not_o be_v sensible_a to_o they_o those_o who_o be_v true_o renew_v they_o have_v this_o wrought_v in_o their_o heart_n by_o god_n spirit_n a_o secret_a disposition_n to_o love_v goodness_n and_o those_o who_o be_v good_a a_o evident_a token_n they_o be_v in_o some_o measure_n so_o themselves_o for_o like_a love_v like_a so_o they_o love_v those_o who_o be_v holy_a and_o the_o more_o holy_a they_o love_v they_o the_o better_a they_o love_v they_o yea_o they_o more_o account_n of_o a_o spark_n of_o holiness_n than_o all_o other_o natural_a accomplishment_n whereas_o the_o wicked_a though_o they_o may_v carry_v a_o fair_a show_n to_o the_o godly_a yet_o indeed_o they_o hate_v they_o they_o be_v thorn_n in_o their_o eye_n now_o this_o mark_n shall_v be_v right_o consider_v lest_o any_o that_o have_v not_o interest_n shall_v deceive_v themselves_o and_o lie_v hold_v of_o it_o one_o may_v love_v some_o good_a man_n because_o they_o have_v be_v some_o way_n oblige_v to_o they_o but_o see_v if_o thou_o love_v all_o goodness_n and_o all_o good_a man_n yea_o those_o who_o thou_o never_o know_v but_o by_o report_n 2._o one_o may_v love_v good_a man_n because_o of_o their_o natural_a and_o moral_a endowment_n as_o kindness_n courtesy_n wisdom_n affability_n etc._n etc._n but_o look_v if_o thou_o love_v they_o for_o their_o piety_n and_o holiness_n look_v if_o thou_o love_v holiness_n where_o it_o want_v there_o natural_a and_o moral_a endowment_n and_o recommendation_n if_o thou_o love_v not_o only_o a_o wise_a good_a man_n but_o even_o also_o a_o simple_a good_a man_n not_o only_o a_o good_a man_n of_o some_o place_n and_o reputation_n in_o the_o world_n but_o even_o also_o a_o mean_a good_a man_n and_o the_o like_a yea_o look_v if_o thou_o love_v holiness_n &_o goodness_n not_o only_a when_o and_o where_o it_o be_v without_o the_o advantage_n of_o natural_a accomplishment_n but_o even_o also_o where_o it_o have_v great_a disadvantage_n in_o regard_n of_o these_o as_o when_o a_o man_n want_v that_o measure_n of_o natural_a wisdom_n that_o be_v requisite_a perhaps_o to_o have_v through_o the_o weakness_n of_o his_o mind_n and_o want_v that_o measure_n of_o affability_n and_o amiableness_n that_o be_v requisite_a through_o the_o natural_a temper_n of_o his_o body_n look_v i_o say_v if_o in_o such_o a_o case_n thou_o love_v his_o goodness_n piety_n and_o holiness_n and_o not_o take_v prejudice_n against_o it_o but_o be_v such_o a_o one_o who_o do_v love_v and_o honour_v they_o that_o fear_v the_o lord_n this_o mark_n in_o the_o psalm_n be_v set_v down_o somewhat_o different_o we_o must_v try_v ourselves_o by_o this_o it_o be_v true_a great_a man_n must_v have_v the_o outward_a respect_n their_o place_n speak_v honour_n to_o who_o honour_n but_o for_o the_o inward_a respect_n of_o the_o heart_n we_o shall_v see_v whether_o greatness_n or_o goodness_n carry_v it_o away_o certain_o those_o who_o have_v get_v their_o judgement_n rectify_v and_o renew_v to_o discern_v thing_n that_o differ_v or_o have_v their_o heart_n set_v upon_o the_o pursuit_n of_o grace_n will_v esteem_v more_o of_o it_o where_o it_o be_v then_o of_o all_o the_o greatness_n in_o the_o world_n a_o three_o mark_n be_v this_o faith_n purify_v the_o heart_n which_o may_v carry_v with_o it_o a_o double_a meaning_n to_o wit_n either_o this_o that_o whereas_o the_o hypocrite_n look_v only_o to_o the_o outward_a man_n but_o not_o to_o the_o hide_a man_n of_o the_o heart_n true_a faith_n it_o do_v far_o otherways_o for_o know_v that_o it_o have_v to_o do_v with_o the_o alseeing_a god_n the_o tryer_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o searcher_n of_o the_o reins_n he_o strive_v to_o keep_v clean_o his_o heart_n and_o to_o take_v heed_n to_o the_o thought_n of_o his_o heart_n aswell_o as_o to_o his_o outward_a action_n every_o one_o that_o have_v this_o hope_n purify_v himself_o but_o second_o this_o be_v not_o all_o faith_n purify_v the_o heart_n that_o be_v make_v a_o man_n not_o only_o make_v conscience_n of_o the_o thought_n and_o disposition_n of_o his_o heart_n to_o purify_v they_o but_o even_o also_o help_v he_o to_o purify_v it_o and_o purge_v it_o from_o the_o several_a corruption_n of_o it_o for_o through_o faith_n we_o get_v victory_n over_o all_o corruption_n this_o be_v our_o victory_n even_o our_o faith_n &_o by_o it_o we_o draw_v virtue_n from_o christ_n to_o cure_v our_o corruption_n so_o that_o faith_n by_o little_a and_o little_a purge_v the_o heart_n throughout_o obj._n o_o then_o i_o can_v have_v faith_n for_o i_o find_v my_o heart_n swarm_v with_o wicked_a and_o impure_a thought_n many_o great_a and_o gross_a corruption_n and_o some_o of_o they_o very_o strong_a and_o indeed_o predominant_a a._n 1._o that_o thy_o heart_n as_o thou_o think_v be_v so_o full_a of_o corruption_n be_v not_o that_o thy_o heart_n be_v more_o impure_a than_o other_o but_o that_o thou_o have_v a_o clear_a light_n and_o better_a sight_n of_o the_o corruption_n of_o thy_o own_o heart_n than_o other_o have_v thy_o heart_n be_v once_o more_o unclean_a when_o thou_o see_v it_o not_o '_o to_o be_v so_o now_o when_o thou_o see_v these_o small_a moat_n it_o be_v a_o token_n the_o sun_n of_o righteousness_n have_v shine_v upon_o thou_o 2._o that_o faith_n purify_v the_o heart_n must_v be_v right_o understand_v for_o the_o meaning_n be_v not_o that_o faith_n do_v altogether_o purge_v and_o free_a the_o heart_n from_o sin_n who_o can_v say_v his_o heart_n be_v clean_a but_o this_o faith_n put_v a_o clean_a purify_n disposition_n into_o the_o heart_n so_o that_o it_o either_o resist_v it_o or_o reject_v sin_n or_o work_v it_o out_o although_o there_o be_v much_o of_o the_o filthiness_n of_o sin_n yet_o it_o still_o fight_v against_o it_o gainstand_v it_o work_v it_o out_o even_o as_o clean_a liquor_n do_v every_o unclean_a thing_n honey_n for_o example_n or_o as_o oil_n will_v be_v uppermost_a or_o as_o wine_n above_o the_o dregs_o when_o faith_n be_v in_o the_o heart_n the_o heart_n will_v not_o harbour_v sin_n thus_o it_o be_v say_v if_o i_o regard_v iniquity_n in_o my_o heart_n if_o there_o be_v never_o so_o much_o sinfulness_n in_o the_o heart_n yet_o if_o thou_o will_v be_v quit_v of_o it_o dislike_v it_o loathe_v it_o cry_v
thou_o harbour_v some_o sin_n and_o will_v not_o submit_v thy_o neck_n to_o the_o yoke_n of_o some_o duty_n or_o other_o o_o than_o thy_o desire_n thy_o care_n thy_o waken_n thy_o wound_n have_v not_o be_v serious_a have_v not_o be_v deep_o enough_o to_o bruise_v out_o all_o corruption_n thou_o shall_v be_v ashamed_a and_o disappoint_v of_o the_o religion_n thou_o have_v because_o thou_o have_v not_o respect_n unto_o all_o god_n commandment_n he_o that_o offend_v in_o one_o be_v guilty_a of_o all_o thou_o regard_v iniquity_n in_o thy_o heart_n the_o lord_n will_v not_o hear_v thy_o prayer_n thou_o be_v but_o counterfeit_a coin_n for_o thou_o want_v the_o lord_n stamp_n and_o seal_v to_o wit_n to_o depart_v from_o iniquity_n even_o every_o iniquity_n thou_o give_v not_o all_o diligence_n to_o make_v thy_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a by_o well_o do_v even_o every_o sort_n of_o well_o do_v add_v to_o thy_o faith_n virtue_n etc._n etc._n which_o thou_o will_v do_v be_v thy_o desire_n and_o care_v but_o serious_a last_o be_v thy_o thought_n heart_n affection_n otherways_o take_v up_o all_o the_o day_n long_o and_o run_v more_o upon_o other_o thing_n then_o upon_o the_o pleal_n of_o god_n the_o make_n of_o thy_o own_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a the_o keep_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n and_o do_v thy_o contentment_n or_o discontentment_n thy_o grief_n and_o joy_n peace_n or_o unquietness_n arise_v from_o other_o ground_n at_o night_n then_o be_v sure_a some_o other_o thing_n go_v near_o thy_o heart_n then_o god_n or_o christ_n or_o thy_o own_o soul_n thy_o care_n be_v not_o serious_a thou_o fulfille_v not_o the_o rule_n thou_o seek_v not_o first_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n thou_o be_v not_o herein_o exercise_v always_o to_o keep_v a_o good_a conscience_n thou_o do_v not_o set_v the_o lord_n always_o before_o thou_o and_o so_o can_v not_o conclude_v that_o he_o be_v at_o thy_o right_a hand_n and_o so_o shall_v not_o be_v move_v mean_n of_o humiliation_n we_o have_v already_o speak_v of_o the_o general_a direction_n concern_v the_o work_n of_o god_n spirit_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o child_n how_o we_o ought_v to_o carry_v ourselves_o upon_o the_o discovery_n of_o the_o want_n or_o weakness_n of_o any_o grace_n or_o work_v of_o god_n spirit_n in_o our_o soul_n to_o wit_n not_o to_o give_v place_n to_o despair_v but_o first_o of_o all_o by_o earnest_n and_o frequent_a prayer_n to_o have_v our_o recourse_n to_o god_n who_o give_v liberal_o to_o all_o and_o upbraid_v none_o and_o who_o have_v promise_v not_o to_o deny_v his_o holy_a spirit_n to_o they_o that_o ask_v it_o now_o although_o this_o be_v a_o good_a and_o main_a way_n to_o obtain_v what_o we_o want_v yet_o we_o must_v not_o rest_v here_o but_z to_o prayer_n must_v join_v the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n or_o else_o we_o shall_v not_o speed_v pray_v we_o never_o so_o diligent_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v we_o put_v to_o our_o hand_n and_o therefore_o command_v we_o work_v out_o etc._n etc._n and_o to_o this_o we_o be_v command_v even_o to_o humble_v ourselves_o although_o it_o be_v the_o work_n of_o god_n spirit_n i_o tell_v you_o that_o a_o point_n very_o much_o to_o be_v take_v heed_n to_o be_v that_o in_o use_v the_o mean_n it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o use_v the_o mean_n in_o general_a the_o word_n and_o the_o sacrament_n but_o we_o shall_v consider_v the_o particular_a mean_n the_o fit_a and_o near_a mean_n to_o beget_v or_o strengthen_v such_o a_o grace_n and_o for_o want_v of_o this_o we_o may_v take_v very_o great_a pain_n in_o general_a and_o we_o shall_v hardly_o speed_v and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v see_v how_o far_o the_o work_n be_v proceed_v in_o etc._n etc._n and_o as_o what_o our_o want_n be_v and_o where_o the_o stop_n lie_v and_o then_o to_o pray_v and_o to_o use_n mean_v most_o diligent_o and_o to_o use_v the_o particular_a and_o near_a mean_n and_o therefore_o i_o think_v it_o most_o needful_a to_o lay_v out_o the_o near_a and_o most_o particular_a mean_n of_o this_o work_n of_o humiliation_n that_o so_o we_o use_v they_o the_o lord_n blessing_n and_o concur_v by_o his_o spirit_n those_o who_o have_v not_o find_v this_o humiliation_n at_o all_o as_o yet_o may_v have_v it_o wrought_v in_o they_o and_o such_o of_o we_o who_o have_v find_v it_o in_o some_o measure_n may_v get_v it_o increase_v and_o strengthen_v and_o so_o all_o of_o we_o may_v be_v teach_v how_o to_o give_v obedience_n unto_o this_o exhortation_n humble_v yourselves_o under_o the_o mighty_a hand_n of_o god_n i._o the_o first_o and_o indeed_o a_o main_a mean_a to_o work_v humiliation_n in_o we_o be_v serious_o to_o miditatâ—_n upon_o the_o law_n &_o the_o threaten_n thereof_o and_o to_o apply_v they_o to_o ourselves_o in_o mirror_n that_o only_o can_v let_v we_o see_v the_o foul_a spot_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o again_o to_o consider_v the_o threaten_n will_v bring_v we_o to_o humiliation_n while_o i_o be_v without_o the_o law_n i_o live_v but_o when_o the_o commandment_n come_v sin_n revive_v and_o i_o die_v will_v you_o then_o take_v a_o course_n to_o get_v this_o work_n of_o humiliation_n wrought_v first_o of_o all_o get_v the_o clear_a knowledge_n of_o god_n law_n and_o examine_v thyself_o by_o it_o lay_v the_o rule_n of_o the_o law_n to_o thy_o own_o heart_n and_o so_o see_v how_o great_a a_o transgressor_n thou_o be_v for_o want_n of_o this_o the_o most_o part_n of_o man_n and_o woman_n live_v in_o sin_n without_o know_v that_o they_o sin_n and_o so_o without_o either_o repentance_n or_o amendment_n which_o be_v both_o pitiful_a and_o dangerous_a pitiful_a in_o regard_n of_o the_o lord_n holy_a will_n dangerous_a to_o your_o own_o soul_n all_o will_v say_v they_o be_v great_a sinner_n but_o i_o fear_v they_o see_v not_o wherein_o and_o so_o can_v neither_o repent_v nor_o amend_v o_o but_o if_o thou_o will_v apply_v the_o law_n to_o thyself_o thou_o will_v see_v that_o thou_o have_v be_v and_o still_o be_v a_o exceed_a great_a transgressor_n consider_v the_o first_o command_n and_o see_v if_o thou_o do_v not_o sin_v exceed_o against_o it_o if_o thy_o heart_n do_v not_o whore_n and_o commit_v spiritual_a adultery_n with_o the_o creature_n delight_v and_o trust_v more_o in_o it_o then_o in_o the_o creator_n god_n bless_v for_o ever_o and_o thou_o shall_v find_v also_o that_o thou_o put_v thyself_o most_o frequent_o in_o god_n place_n make_v thyself_o the_o utmost_a end_n of_o all_o thy_o action_n which_o how_o horrible_a sin_n they_o be_v i_o leave_v to_o thyself_o to_o judge_v be_v not_o this_o last_o herod_n fault_n who_o the_o lord_n destroy_v consider_v the_o second_o command_n and_o thou_o shall_v see_v there_o be_v many_o point_n of_o god_n worship_n that_o thou_o i_o fear_v do_v altogether_o neglect_v as_o that_o of_o meditation_n and_o conference_n and_o that_o all_o of_o they_o be_v for_o the_o most_o part_n superficial_o and_o slight_o discharge_v by_o thou_o and_o that_o thou_o come_v within_o the_o compass_n of_o that_o curse_n woe_n be_v unto_o they_o that_o do_v the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n negligent_o consider_v the_o three_o command_n and_o not_o to_o speak_v of_o thy_o frequent_a profane_v of_o god_n name_n see_v what_o either_o thou_o have_v do_v or_o speak_v to_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n name_n notwithstanding_o it_o be_v the_o many_o thing_n that_o thou_o be_v make_v for_o look_v to_o the_o four_o command_v and_o see_v how_o thou_o have_v sanctify_v the_o sabbath_n in_o thy_o thought_n and_o discourse_n yea_o see_v if_o thou_o have_v not_o do_v in_o this_o point_n against_o thy_o light_n and_o even_o refuse_v to_o return_v and_o have_v hate_v to_o be_v reform_v choose_v rather_o to_o displease_v the_o immortal_a god_n then_o mortal_a man_n choose_v rather_o to_o follow_v thy_o own_o will_n than_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o that_o notwithstanding_o he_o have_v recommend_v it_o as_o a_o special_a point_n of_o his_o will_n unto_o thou_o and_o have_v bid_v thou_o remember_v to_o keep_v it_o holy_a consider_v the_o five_o command_v you_o that_o be_v superior_n whether_o you_o render_v to_o those_o that_o be_v under_o you_o that_o which_o be_v just_a and_o equal_a and_o you_o that_o be_v inferior_n if_o you_o give_v your_o superior_n that_o honour_n and_o respect_n in_o your_o heart_n
and_o obeye_v the_o voice_n of_o his_o servant_n and_o therefore_o not_o only_o may_v but_o shall_v trust_v in_o the_o lord_n isa_n 50.10_o thou_o hate_v not_o to_o be_v reform_v and_o therefore_o daily_a and_o nightly_a meditation_n upon_o the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o do_v all_o these_o duty_n by_o start_n and_o fit_n or_o superficial_o or_o not_o at_o all_o then_o certain_o no_o right_a humiliation_n no_o true_a grace_n yet_o in_o thy_o soul_n be_v earnest_a to_o labour_v for_o and_o to_o pray_v for_o that_o which_o thou_o want_v for_o it_o concern_v the_o damnation_n or_o salvation_n of_o thy_o soul_n thus_o far_o for_o these_o mark_n which_o be_v take_v from_o the_o antecedent_n of_o faith_n or_o those_o thing_n which_o go_v before_o faith_n at_o least_o in_o order_n experience_n which_o we_o have_v already_o do_v 2._o to_o try_v they_o by_o compare_v they_o with_o the_o case_n of_o the_o ungodly_a and_o wicked_a and_o so_o to_o try_v they_o by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o now_o we_o be_v to_o do_v wherein_o although_o some_o thing_n be_v coincident_a with_o thing_n speak_v before_o the_o labour_n will_v not_o be_v unprofitable_a i._o the_o first_o mark_n of_o right_a humiliation_n and_o of_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o that_o respect_n be_v this_o to_o wit_n namely_o the_o right_a sight_n of_o sin_n the_o spirit_n of_o god_n when_o he_o come_v first_o into_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o christian_a work_v by_o the_o law_n or_o commandment_n give_v unto_o a_o man_n another_o sight_n of_o sin_n than_o any_o natural_a man_n how_o qualify_v soever_o he_o be_v with_o humane_a literature_n and_o natural_a wisdom_n can_v have_v this_o be_v clear_o understand_v by_o the_o doctrine_n and_o in_o the_o person_n of_o st._n paul_n rom._n 7._o i_o be_v alive_a without_o the_o law_n once_o that_o be_v in_o a_o good_a conceit_n of_o myself_o and_o of_o my_o own_o righteousness_n but_o when_o the_o commandment_n come_v that_o be_v the_o spirit_n with_o the_o commandment_n or_o law_n for_o he_o have_v the_o commandment_n or_o law_n in_o the_o letter_n before_o sin_v revive_v and_o i_o die_v i_o see_v another_o sight_n of_o my_o sinfulness_n then_o before_o to_o speak_v more_o plain_o and_o particular_o of_o this_o note_n when_o the_o spirit_n come_v and_o work_v this_o sight_n of_o sinfulness_n in_o he_o it_o work_v this_o threefold_a sight_n in_o he_o 1._o a_o sight_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o particular_a corruption_n 2._o of_o his_o gracelessness_n and_o want_n 3._o of_o his_o unrighteousness_n and_o imperfection_n of_o his_o best_a action_n now_o all_o these_o be_v hide_v from_o the_o natural_a man_n as_o be_v clear_a by_o example_n 1._o of_o the_o nation_n of_o the_o jew_n who_o go_v about_o to_o establish_v their_o own_o righteousness_n 2._o of_o the_o papist_n who_o take_v upon_o they_o for_o want_v of_o this_o sight_n to_o fulfil_v the_o law_n to_o merit_v to_o supererrogate_v 3._o of_o our_o own_o ignorance_n who_o till_o the_o point_n of_o death_n can_v be_v bring_v to_o this_o sight_n of_o their_o own_o sinfulness_n but_o ever_o be_v justify_v themselves_o thank_v god_n they_o never_o wrong_v any_o instead_o of_o confess_v and_o humble_v so_o that_o this_o be_v clear_o the_o case_n of_o the_o natural_a man_n but_o to_o the_o particular_n 1._o the_o spirit_n give_v to_o a_o man_n a_o sight_n of_o his_o sinfulness_n and_o corruption_n when_o the_o commandment_n come_v sin_n revive_v that_o be_v there_o be_v a_o further_a sight_n of_o sin_n hence_o be_v it_o that_o 1._o they_o be_v out_o of_o conceit_n of_o themselves_o think_v themselves_o to_o be_v the_o chief_a of_o sinner_n 2._o that_o they_o complain_v so_o heavy_o of_o their_o own_o corruption_n who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o the_o body_n of_o death_n 3._o they_o feel_v the_o flesh_n lust_a against_o the_o spirit_n gal._n 5._o now_o the_o ungodly_a or_o natural_a man_n be_v not_o so_o for_o 1._o he_o have_v not_o so_o evil_a a_o conceit_n of_o himself_o as_o to_o think_v himself_o to_o be_v the_o chief_a of_o sinner_n or_o a_o great_a sinner_n but_o quite_o contrary_a i_o thank_v god_n i_o be_o not_o like_o that_o publican_n 2._o he_o be_v not_o sensible_a of_o his_o sinfulness_n whether_o of_o the_o body_n of_o death_n or_o of_o his_o actual_a sin_n flow_v therefrom_o but_o on_o the_o contrary_a he_o flatter_v sensible_a although_o it_o be_v secret_a further_o especial_o in_o the_o beginning_n of_o christianity_n it_o be_v not_o sensible_a for_o the_o understanding_n whereof_o consider_v that_o there_o be_v three_o sort_n of_o motive_n of_o obedience_n 1._o one_o altogether_o wrong_a have_v no_o eye_n to_o god_n so_o to_o eschew_v the_o ill_a opinion_n of_o man_n many_o do_v sundry_a good_a duty_n and_o become_v neighbour_n like_o in_o outward_a duty_n of_o outward_a obedience_n other_o to_o win_v the_o praise_n of_o man_n will_v go_v beyond_o their_o neighbour_n yea_o possible_o beyond_o good_a christian_n there_o be_v sundry_a other_o by-respect_n and_o many_o by-road_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o natural_a man_n and_o hypocrite_n the_o second_o sort_n of_o motive_n be_v that_o which_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o begin_v christian_n which_o be_v not_o altogether_o right_a and_o yet_o some_o way_n right_a as_o introductorie_n to_o right_n as_o have_v a_o eye_n to_o god_n and_o as_o join_v with_o some_o weak_a faith_n and_o some_o insensible_a love_n this_o be_v the_o motive_n of_o fear_n flow_v from_o the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n which_o have_v take_v a_o deep_a impression_n in_o they_o and_o their_o faith_n be_v but_o weak_a and_o stagger_a as_o yet_o prevail_v with_o they_o and_o be_v the_o most_o sensible_a motive_n that_o put_v they_o on_o they_o do_v because_o they_o dare_v not_o do_v otherwise_o because_o they_o fear_v god_n justice_n and_o have_v a_o waken_n in_o their_o own_o conscience_n and_o yet_o this_o be_v not_o altogether_o wrong_a for_o the_o respect_n aforesaid_a for_o why_o do_v the_o lord_n denounce_v so_o many_o threaten_n and_o judgement_n but_o for_o this_o and_o that_o all_o these_o shall_v have_v their_o own_o place_n with_o we_o yea_o why_o be_v our_o obedience_n so_o often_o waken_v up_o by_o rod_n cross_n and_o affliction_n if_o this_o sort_n of_o fear_n be_v altogether_o wrong_a but_o as_o faith_n and_o love_n grow_v strong_a by_o little_a and_o little_o they_o cast_v out_o fear_v and_o so_o come_v the_o three_o motive_n even_o that_o acceptable_a motive_n of_o love_n this_o be_v that_o which_o st._n john_n 1.4_o v._o 18._o have_v pâ—â—fect_a love_n cast_v out_o fear_n and_o again_o he_o that_o fear_v be_v not_o make_v perfect_a in_o love_n so_o that_o to_o work_v out_o of_o fear_n do_v not_o argue_v no_o love_n and_o so_o no_o faith_n but_o only_o that_o thou_o be_v not_o make_v perfect_a in_o love_n because_o of_o the_o weakness_n of_o thy_o faith_n labour_v then_o to_o strengthen_v thy_o faith_n that_o it_o may_v have_v more_o love_n for_o it_o flow_v from_o faith_n and_o be_v according_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o thy_o faith_n grow_v as_o faith_n grow_v and_o do_v not_o give_v place_n to_o that_o main_a policy_n of_o satan_n and_o ordinary_a and_o incident_a weakness_n of_o many_o christian_n to_o darken_v thy_o faith_n because_o thou_o find_v thy_o love_n weak_a but_o as_o for_o thou_o that_o either_o work_v not_o at_o all_o or_o if_o thou_o do_v any_o thing_n it_o arise_v from_o wrong_a motive_n and_o end_n from_o custom_n and_o not_o from_o conscience_n to_o please_v man_n and_o not_o to_o please_v god_n neither_o fear_v he_o nor_o love_v he_o thou_o have_v no_o faith_n and_o so_o be_v in_o a_o miserable_a condition_n a_o five_o mark_n and_o effect_n of_o faith_n be_v spiritual_a peace_n and_o joy_n for_o peace_n be_v justify_v by_o faith_n we_o have_v peace_n with_o god_n through_o jesus_n christ_n our_o lord_n for_o joy_n in_o who_o believe_v we_o rejoice_v with_o joy_n unspeakable_a and_o glorious_a and_o both_o together_o rom._n 15.13_o now_o the_o god_n of_o hope_n fill_v you_o with_o jâ—y_n and_o peace_n in_o believe_v q._n but_o have_v not_o the_o wicked_a and_o the_o natural_a man_n peace_n a._n true_a but_o it_o be_v far_o unlike_o the_o peace_n of_o the_o believer_n and_o of_o the_o godly_a and_o may_v be_v discern_v by_o sundry_a mark_n but_o clear_o and_o plain_o by_o these_o two_o 1._o the_o peace_n of_o the_o believer_n be_v after_o great_a unquietness_n and_o trouble_n and_o much_o hard_a war_n as_o we_o say_v ere_o he_o get_v unto_o it_o as_o we_o see_v in_o paul_n the_o jailor_n the_o convert_v in_o the_o act_n and_o these_o say_n come_v unto_o i_o all_o you_o that_o be_v weary_a and_o lade_v the_o whole_a need_v not_o the_o physician_n but_o they_o that_o be_v sick_a thus_o fare_v it_o with_o many_o yea_o in_o all_o there_o must_v be_v something_o of_o this_o kind_n else_o this_o peace_n and_o christ_n the_o prince_n of_o peace_n and_o purchaser_n of_o this_o peace_n can_v never_o be_v either_o sufficient_o seek_v to_o or_o prize_v but_o the_o natural_a man_n peace_n have_v be_v a_o continual_a peace_n a_o token_n that_o the_o strong_a man_n be_v not_o yet_o cast_v out_o for_o he_o will_v not_o be_v cast_v out_o without_o some_o sensible_a unquietness_n a_o token_n that_o the_o new_a birth_n have_v not_o be_v for_o it_o the_o lord_n mean_n this_o be_v a_o safe_a and_o a_o well_o ground_a peace_n but_o moreover_o for_o the_o further_o clear_v of_o this_o point_n take_v in_o the_o other_o difference_n between_o the_o natural_a man_n peace_n and_o the_o believer_n peace_n the_o natural_a man_n as_o he_o have_v always_o peace_n so_o he_o have_v altogether_o and_o in_o all_o respect_v peace_n but_o the_o believer_n be_v not_o so_o he_o have_v peace_n with_o god_n but_o not_o with_o the_o devil_n peace_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o guiltiness_n of_o sin_n i_o mean_v in_o regard_n of_o the_o main_a battle_n but_o want_v not_o skirmish_n which_o the_o wicked_a have_v not_o for_o he_o have_v a_o tender_a and_o so_o a_o combat_v conscience_n but_o have_v not_o peace_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o corruption_n of_o sin_n for_o the_o
much_o more_o precious_a then_o of_o gold_n that_o perish_v though_o it_o be_v try_v with_o the_o fire_n may_v be_v find_v to_o praise_v and_o honour_n and_o glory_n the_o sufficiency_n of_o a_o anchor_n be_v only_o know_v in_o a_o storm_n if_o it_o hold_v out_o in_o a_o great_a tempest_n even_o so_o be_v the_o sufficiency_n of_o the_o anchor_n of_o hope_n which_o flow_v from_o faith_n only_o best_a know_v by_o its_o hold_v out_o in_o the_o time_n of_o great_a adversity_n for_o at_o such_o a_o time_n as_o this_o the_o fleshly_a presumption_n of_o the_o hypocrite_n do_v fail_v he_o his_o prove_v to_o be_v but_o fantasy_n whereas_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o true_a believer_n though_o it_o be_v in_o such_o a_o case_n much_o weaken_v and_o overlayed_n yet_o it_o fail_v not_o altogether_o it_o may_v make_v a_o great_a halt_n but_o his_o faith_n do_v not_o fail_v he_o it_o stand_v out_o and_o carry_v he_o through_o the_o storm_n of_o adversity_n see_v then_o if_o thy_o faith_n have_v be_v a_o standing-out_a faith_n a_o carrying-through_a faith_n in_o the_o time_n of_o adversity_n if_o it_o do_v not_o make_v thou_o make_v haste_n that_o be_v put_v thou_o upon_o unlawful_a shift_n but_o that_o thou_o still_o do_v cleave_v to_o god_n and_o the_o mean_n that_o he_o have_v appoint_v that_o be_v the_o word_n and_o prayer_n do_v call_v upon_o god_n always_o never_o give_v over_o kingdom_n and_o will_n we_o may_v see_v by_o the_o acceptablenesse_n of_o solomon_n suit_n that_o he_o be_v far_o more_o ready_a to_o bestow_v the_o one_o than_o the_o other_o let_v these_o notable_a prop_n then_o uphold_v thy_o heart_n until_o the_o lord_n good_a time_n come_v of_o work_v these_o thing_n in_o thou_o seek_v earnest_o for_o the_o lord_n will_v be_v seek_v for_o these_o thing_n ezek._n 36._o and_o then_o wait_v the_o lord_n good_a time_n for_o by_o faith_n and_o patience_n we_o must_v inherit_v the_o promise_n do_v this_o and_o be_v not_o discourage_v i_o be_o glad_a how_o who_o keep_v covenant_n and_o mercy_n he_o style_v himself_o abundant_a in_o truth_n exod._n 34._o great_a be_v his_o faithfulness_n and_o love_n who_o keep_v truth_n for_o ever_o psal_n 46._o he_o promise_n be_v i_o sure_o that_o they_o belong_v unto_o i_o but_o alas_o what_o warrant_v have_v i_o for_o that_o a._n this_o be_v another_o of_o satan_n depth_n and_o fiery_a dart_n whereby_o many_o be_v hold_v back_o many_o hear_n of_o the_o pregnancy_n of_o the_o promise_n of_o forgiveness_n and_o how_o that_o there_o be_v forgiveness_n for_o great_a and_o many_o sin_n conceive_v some_o hope_n but_o still_o they_o fear_v that_o these_o precious_a promise_n belong_v not_o to_o they_o that_o the_o offer_n of_o reconciliation_n be_v not_o make_v to_o they_o and_o so_o stick_v in_o the_o application_n of_o the_o promise_n to_o themselves_o now_o a_o notable_a help_n for_o this_o be_v to_o consider_v in_o the_o second_o place_n the_o largeness_n the_o indefinitenesse_n and_o the_o extent_n of_o the_o promise_n for_o they_o be_v conceive_v in_o such_o general_a term_n that_o in_o effect_n there_o be_v leave_v room_n sufficient_a for_o every_o one_o to_o come_v to_o subscribe_v his_o name_n and_o to_o set_v to_o his_o seal_n that_o god_n be_v true_a by_o so_o do_v to_o honour_n god_n and_o save_v his_o own_o soul_n so_o that_o none_o be_v exclude_v to_o who_o the_o offer_n be_v make_v unless_o they_o exclude_v themselves_o and_o that_o it_o be_v through_o their_o own_o default_n the_o promise_n i_o say_v and_o offer_v of_o reconciliation_n be_v set_v down_o in_o very_o general_a term_n although_o man_n name_n be_v not_o set_v down_o which_o be_v needle_n god_n so_o love_v the_o world_n that_o whosoever_o believe_v etc._n etc._n behold_v the_o lamb_n of_o god_n that_o take_v away_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n behold_v i_o bring_v you_o tiding_n of_o great_a jâ—y_n to_o all_o people_n but_o above_o all_o press_v and_o notable_a be_v that_o place_n act_v 2.29_o even_o answer_v as_o it_o be_v your_o objection_n viz._n i_o know_v not_o that_o the_o promise_n belong_v to_o i_o yes_o say_v he_o to_o you_o and_o to_o your_o seed_n to_o all_o that_o be_v near_o and_o afar_o off_o and_o to_o as_o many_o as_o our_o god_n shall_v call_v even_o by_o his_o outward_a call_n for_o else_o the_o word_n be_v to_o no_o purpose_n and_o indeed_o be_v it_o otherwise_o with_o the_o lord_n we_o shall_v make_v he_o a_o mocker_n do_v he_o offer_v that_o to_o any_o which_o do_v not_o belong_v to_o they_o this_o generality_n of_o the_o offer_n be_v the_o very_a ground_n and_o warrant_v of_o faith_n and_o therefore_o shall_v be_v well_o look_v unto_o obj._n but_o the_o scripture_n be_v clear_a that_o all_o who_o be_v call_v shall_v not_o have_v the_o benefit_n of_o the_o promise_n for_o direct_o many_o be_v call_v and_o few_o be_v choose_v and_o why_o may_v not_o i_o be_v of_o the_o number_n of_o these_o a._n this_o show_v indeed_o that_o all_o shall_v not_o reap_v the_o benefit_n of_o the_o promise_n to_o wit_n through_o their_o own_o default_n but_o not_o that_o the_o promise_n and_o offer_n do_v not_o belong_v to_o they_o further_o thou_o make_v the_o wrong_a use_n of_o this_o sort_n of_o doctrine_n for_o it_o be_v set_v down_o in_o scripture_n not_o to_o feed_v thou_o in_o thy_o infidelity_n but_o to_o terrify_v thou_o from_o the_o same_o and_o to_o stir_v thou_o up_o to_o believe_v all_o this_o i_o will_v clear_v to_o you_o by_o a_o familiar_a similitude_n suppose_v a_o number_n of_o prisoner_n be_v imprison_v for_o some_o great_a crime_n there_o be_v a_o general_a proclamation_n and_o offer_n of_o liberty_n make_v unto_o they_o all_o who_o will_v before_o such_o a_o time_n make_v use_n of_o it_o from_o the_o free_a and_o gracious_a favour_n of_o their_o prince_n suppose_v likewise_o that_o it_o can_v be_v foresee_v and_o conjecture_v that_o for_o all_o this_o general_a and_o gracious_a offer_n that_o yet_o there_o will_v be_v sundry_a that_o will_v not_o make_v use_n of_o it_o some_o of_o they_o through_o aziâ—esse_n and_o sloth_n drink_v or_o play_v or_o sleep_v lose_v the_o opportunity_n 2._o other_o again_o despise_v it_o as_o think_v by_o their_o power_n &_o ability_n to_o get_v free_a when_o they_o please_v or_o lean_v to_o former_a merit_n or_o good_a service_n do_v which_o they_o think_v may_v well_o counterpoise_v any_o fault_n they_o have_v commit_v and_o 3._o other_o a_o thing_n to_o be_v take_v notice_n of_o quite_o contrary_a to_o the_o former_a through_o the_o conscience_n and_o greatness_n of_o their_o fault_n shall_v misdoubt_v and_o misbeleeve_v the_o truth_n of_o so_o gracious_a a_o offer_n suppose_v i_o say_v that_o all_o this_o can_v be_v foresee_v that_o all_o these_o sort_n of_o person_n upon_o several_a consideration_n shall_v loose_v the_o opportunity_n of_o the_o offer_n and_o that_o therefore_o for_o the_o further_a weal_n of_o the_o prisoner_n and_o the_o prevention_n of_o all_o this_o with_o the_o general_a proclamation_n a_o intimation_n be_v make_v to_o they_o that_o there_o will_v be_v such_o person_n among_o they_o that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v fair_o forewarn_v sly_a such_o impediment_n will_v we_o not_o in_o such_o a_o case_n think_v he_o a_o very_a foolish_a person_n who_o either_o will_v not_o accept_v of_o the_o proclamation_n in_o general_a because_o his_o name_n be_v not_o set_v down_o express_o or_o who_o because_o of_o the_o intimation_n make_v for_o his_o further_a weal_n and_o forewarn_v and_o avoid_v of_o such_o inconvenience_n will_v through_o their_o own_o default_n lose_v the_o opportunity_n of_o the_o offer_n will_v upon_o groundless_a suspicion_n conclude_v that_o he_o may_v be_v one_o of_o that_o number_n and_o so_o keep_v off_o and_o loose_v the_o benefit_n of_o the_o offer_n and_o so_o indeed_o make_v himself_o of_o that_o number_n whereas_o be_v fair_o forewarn_v he_o shall_v labour_v to_o beware_v of_o all_o these_o let_n that_o may_v hinder_v he_o from_o embrace_v the_o opportunity_n of_o the_o offer_n even_o so_o to_o apply_v this_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o scripture_n have_v make_v a_o gracious_a general_a proclamation_n and_o promise_v of_o our_o liberty_n from_o the_o prison_n and_o punishment_n of_o hell_n through_o the_o lord_n tender_a mercy_n and_o free_a grace_n in_o christ_n jesus_n and_o not_o only_o so_o but_o foreseeing_a that_o for_o all_o this_o gracious_a and_o general_a offer_n many_o will_v not_o reap_v and_o take_v the_o benefit_n of_o the_o offer_n some_o slip_n and_o neglect_v it_o be_v loath_a to_o quit_v their_o sloth_n and_o sinful_a pleasure_n of_o who_o speak_v our_o saviour_n mat._n 7._o many_o be_v call_v and_o few_o be_v choose_v strive_v to_o enter_v in_o at_o the_o strait_a gate_n not_o every_o one_o that_o say_v lord_n lord_n etc._n etc._n other_o again_z leaning_z to_z and_o go_v about_o to_o establish_v their_o own_o righteousness_n slight_a the_o righteousness_n which_o be_v by_o faith_n and_o 3_o which_o thou_o shall_v take_v heed_n to_o other_o through_z the_o great_a conscience_n and_o sense_n of_o their_o own_o guiltiness_n be_v make_v to_o misbeleeve_v so_o gracious_a a_o offer_n and_o what_o through_o the_o power_n and_o wile_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o their_o own_o bad_a heart_n of_o unbeleef_n great_o prejudice_v themselves_o through_o infidelity_n of_o they_o speak_v the_o apostle_n heb._n 4._o take_v heed_n lest_o there_o be_v in_o any_o of_o you_o a_o evil_a heart_n of_o unbeleef_n depart_v from_o the_o live_a god_n and_o more_o clear_o let_v we_o fear_v that_o lest_o a_o promise_n be_v make_v etc._n etc._n the_o spirit_n of_o god_n i_o say_v foreseeing_a all_o this_o with_o the_o gracious_a general_a offer_n and_o proclamation_n for_o our_o further_a forewarn_v do_v also_o intimate_v unto_o we_o that_o notwithstanding_o of_o the_o gracious_a and_o general_a offer_n yet_o many_o through_o their_o own_o default_n upon_o the_o aforesaid_a impediment_n shall_v never_o reap_v nor_o enjoy_v the_o
