what_o kind_n of_o mortify_v of_o it_o be_v requisite_a 3._o what_o way_n may_v be_v take_v to_o effect_v it_o i_o will_v brief_o say_v something_o to_o each_o of_o these_o demand_n sol._n 1._o to_o the_o first_o who_o can_v mortify_v his_o sinful_a nature_n i_o answer_v of_o himself_o no_o man_n can_v natural_o he_o have_v neither_o will_n nor_o power_n thereto_o but_o as_o chrysostome_n speak_v in_o the_o business_n potest_fw-la tu_fw-la non_fw-la potes_fw-la sed_fw-la dominus_fw-la tuus_fw-la potest_fw-la of_o repentance_n thou_o can_v not_o turn_v thou_o but_o yet_o thy_o god_n can_v be_v god_n he_o who_o command_v thou_o to_o mortify_v sin_n be_v ready_a enough_o with_o sufficient_a power_n to_o effect_v it_o if_o he_o be_v seek_v unto_o nevertheless_o observe_v by_o the_o way_n that_o mortification_n may_v be_v effect_v two_o way_n 1._o passive_o as_o when_o the_o lord_n do_v infuse_v holy_a principle_n of_o grace_n which_o be_v contrary_a in_o their_o nature_n and_o virtue_n to_o the_o nature_n and_o power_n of_o sin_n work_v out_o sinful_a corruption_n by_o degree_n 2._o active_o as_o when_o the_o renew_a and_o convert_v soul_n do_v by_o faith_n successive_o apply_v and_o draw_v down_o the_o crucify_a virtue_n of_o jesus_n christ_n though_o the_o mere_a natural_a man_n can_v do_v nothing_o to_o the_o mortification_n of_o sin_n yet_o the_o renew_a person_n have_v receive_v grace_n from_o god_n be_v by_o the_o help_n of_o god_n spirit_n to_o stir_v up_o the_o grace_n that_o be_v in_o he_o and_o especial_o his_o faith_n to_o trust_v on_o jesus_n christ_n for_o the_o further_a subduing_n and_o crucifying_n of_o his_o sinful_a nature_n 2._o but_o now_o for_o the_o second_o demand_n what_o kind_n of_o mortification_n be_v most_o requisite_a so_o as_o in_o more_o measure_n to_o free_v the_o heart_n from_o doubt_n in_o a_o word_n this_o be_v sure_o the_o mortify_n be_v 1._o radical_a lay_v the_o axe_n to_o the_o root_n as_o all_o grace_n thrive_v most_o when_o their_o spring_n be_v quicken_v so_o all_o sin_n decay_v most_o when_o their_o root_n be_v mortify_v corrupt_a act_n will_v fall_v quick_o if_o a_o corrupt_a heart_n be_v more_o sanctify_v the_o strength_n of_o sin_n be_v inward_a there_o be_v the_o strong_a hold_n which_o need_v most_o to_o be_v cast_v down_o by_o all_o mean_v set_v up_o a_o crucify_a christ_n in_o thy_o bosom_n 2._o impartial_a it_o be_v true_a one_o sin_n may_v trouble_v more_o than_o another_o but_o it_o will_v be_v thy_o wisdom_n to_o trouble_v all_o sin_n sin_n be_v chain_v together_o as_o well_o as_o grace_n and_o one_o sin_n serve_v to_o help_v another_o and_o the_o neglect_a sin_n may_v perhaps_o sudden_o wound_v thou_o and_o make_v thou_o to_o stagger_v the_o whole_a body_n of_o sin_n in_o every_o member_n of_o it_o must_v be_v the_o object_n of_o thy_o mortify_a work_n this_o will_v testify_v the_o truth_n of_o grace_n receive_v and_o the_o sincerity_n of_o thy_o conscience_n and_o consequent_o will_v remove_v many_o bottom_n of_o fear_n and_o doubt_n 3._o diurnal_a ay_o a_o daily_a work_n perhaps_o sometime_o thou_o be_v fervent_a in_o the_o work_n when_o conscience_n be_v strike_v or_o when_o affliction_n strike_v thou_o but_o afterward_o thou_o be_v negligent_a and_o then_o sin_n get_v strength_n again_o but_o as_o thou_o shall_v live_v by_o faith_n daily_o so_o thou_o shall_v die_v to_o sin_n daily_o watch_v thy_o spirit_n resist_v the_o motion_n of_o it_o insist_v on_o divine_a promise_n implead_v the_o strength_n of_o christ_n every_o day_n thou_o shall_v so_o believe_v still_o as_o if_o thou_o never_o yet_o have_v enough_o of_o christ_n and_o so_o live_v still_o as_o if_o thou_o be_v to_o live_v thy_o last_o and_o so_o mortify_v sin_n still_o as_o thou_o do_v at_o the_o first_o time_n wherein_o god_n look_v on_o thou_o 4._o special_a if_o thou_o will_v make_v thy_o battle_n strong_a in_o any_o part_n do_v it_o then_o against_o infidelity_n and_o whatsoever_o uphold_v
and_o contribute_v unto_o it_o it_o be_v grant_v that_o the_o radical_a principle_n of_o thy_o doubt_n be_v original_a sin_n but_o then_o the_o immediate_a principle_n of_o it_o be_v remain_a infidelity_n out_o of_o it_o immediate_o come_v all_o thy_o staggering_n and_o reel_n and_o questioning_n and_o doubt_n that_o be_v it_o o_o weak_a believer_n which_o disable_v thy_o apprehension_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o christ_n of_o the_o promise_n of_o thy_o title_n that_o be_v it_o which_o pervert_v thy_o judgement_n and_o mis-perswades_a it_o with_o cunning_a reason_n so_o that_o either_o thou_o can_v not_o discern_v the_o full_a truth_n of_o god_n promise_n or_o thou_o can_v not_o see_v prevail_v reason_n to_o persuade_v thyself_o that_o they_o belong_v to_o thou_o therefore_o let_v the_o main_a care_n and_o work_v of_o thou_o be_v to_o strike_v at_o unbelief_n be_v humble_v much_o for_o it_o beseech_v the_o lord_n to_o cure_v thou_o more_o and_o more_o of_o it_o to_o remove_v the_o ignorance_n of_o the_o covenant_n out_o of_o thou_o and_o to_o cast_v down_o carnal_a and_o proud_a reason_n which_o give_v the_o lie_n to_o the_o way_n of_o god_n free_a and_o full_a grace_n which_o will_v have_v thou_o to_o be_v first_o and_o of_o thyself_o that_o which_o thou_o can_v never_o be_v without_o christ_n and_o to_o do_v and_o bring_v that_o which_o god_n never_o impose_v on_o thou_o to_o do_v or_o to_o bring_v but_o have_v tell_v thou_o plain_o the_o work_n of_o it_o in_o thou_o belong_v only_o to_o himself_o and_o he_o be_v also_o real_o and_o gracious_o willing_a to_o bestow_v upon_o thou_o 3._o as_o for_o the_o three_o demand_n what_o way_n thou_o may_v take_v for_o the_o mortify_n of_o all_o this_o sin_n i_o answer_v 1._o general_o christ_n through_o which_o he_o be_v please_v to_o reveal_v his_o arm_n confer_v any_o strength_n against_o thy_o sin_n it_o will_v help_v still_o do_v any_o holy_a fear_n any_o tenderness_n in_o conscience_n any_o decline_a of_o occasion_n do_v vehement_a wrestle_n with_o god_n in_o prayer_n do_v serious_a meditation_n and_o consideration_n do_v close_a society_n with_o the_o saint_n do_v study_n of_o far_a holiness_n do_v frequent_a reviewing_n of_o thy_o condition_n and_o renewing_n of_o covenant_n with_o thy_o god_n in_o his_o strength_n do_v holy_a watch_n do_v resisting_n of_o the_o first_o birth_n of_o sin_n do_v these_o any_o of_o these_o all_o of_o these_o or_o any_o other_o spiritual_a course_n beside_o these_o cause_n thy_o sinfulness_n to_o be_v vile_a unto_o thou_o to_o be_v abhor_v by_o thou_o to_o be_v cast_v down_o in_o thy_o judgement_n to_o be_v cast_v out_o in_o thy_o affection_n to_o be_v cast_v off_o in_o thy_o life_n go_v on_o with_o these_o and_o sin_n will_v then_o be_v more_o and_o more_o mortify_v and_o doubt_n will_v be_v more_o and_o more_o weaken_a the_o more_o that_o thy_o conscience_n be_v thus_o sprinkle_v from_o dead_a work_n the_o more_o shall_v thou_o be_v able_a to_o draw_v near_o unto_o god_n in_o assurance_n of_o faith_n 2._o particular_o for_o the_o mortify_n of_o remain_a infidelity_n do_v three_o thing_n 1._o study_v exact_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o author_n of_o it_o foundation_n of_o it_o matter_n contain_v in_o it_o and_o all_o the_o adjunct_n and_o term_n of_o graciousnesse_n suitableness_n fullness_n faithfulness_n etc._n etc._n appertain_v to_o it_o 2._o study_v jesus_n christ_n thorough_o know_v he_o distinct_o in_o the_o person_n of_o a_o mediator_n and_o office_n and_o effect_n and_o work_n then_o 3._o to_o much_o meditation_n in_o these_o abound_v in_o prayer_n that_o god_n in_o particular_a will_v cause_v thou_o by_o faith_n to_o set_v thy_o seal_n unto_o they_o but_o more_o of_o this_o will_v follow_v in_o answer_v some_o other_o cause_n of_o doubt_n 2._o the_o second_o spring_n be_v weakness_n and_o imperfection_n in_o faith_n the_o cure_n and_o remedy_n of_o which_o be_v be_v like_o a_o pair_n of_o scale_n where_o the_o weight_n of_o the_o one_o bear_v away_o the_o other_o the_o disciple_n i_o remember_v pray_v lord_n increase_v our_o faith_n and_o so_o do_v he_o of_o who_o you_o hear_v in_o mark_n 9_o 24._o mar._n 9_o 24._o lord_n help_v my_o unbelief_n you_o will_v say_v no_o man_n can_v ob._n deny_v that_o if_o his_o faith_n have_v more_o strength_n than_o his_o heart_n shall_v have_v less_o doubt_v but_o how_o may_v that_o be_v do_v how_o may_v faith_n be_v strengthen_v i_o answer_v sol._n 1._o god_n who_o give_v faith_n can_v strengthen_v it_o for_o every_o grace_n depend_v upon_o he_o not_o only_o for_o birth_n but_o also_o for_o compliment_n his_o strength_n must_v lead_v we_o on_o from_o strength_n to_o strength_n from_o faith_n to_o faith_n he_o who_o be_v the_o author_n be_v also_o the_o finisher_n of_o it_o and_o therefore_o if_o thou_o will_v have_v a_o strong_a faith_n thou_o shall_v go_v to_o a_o strong_a god_n and_o beg_v of_o he_o lord_n increase_v my_o faith_n my_o knowledge_n be_v dim_a lighten_v that_o candle_n open_v my_o eye_n yet_o more_o that_o i_o may_v see_v thy_o truth_n my_o assent_n many_o time_n shake_v but_o do_v thou_o establish_v and_o comfirm_v my_o heart_n in_o thy_o truth_n my_o embrace_n application_n very_o tremble_v and_o break_v and_o interrupt_v but_o do_v thou_o guide_v my_o eye_n to_o look_v upon_o to_o embrace_v all_o the_o goodness_n of_o thyself_o of_o thy_o christ_n of_o thy_o word_n it_o be_v god_n method_n to_o lay_v in_o at_o the_o first_o weak_a faith_n that_o we_o may_v beg_v for_o more_o faith_n and_o give_v he_o the_o honour_n of_o all_o have_v we_o it_o strong_a at_o first_o he_o shall_v not_o hear_v of_o we_o but_o he_o dispense_v it_o by_o degree_n that_o in_o all_o our_o get_n and_o in_o all_o our_o victory_n over_o doubt_n etc._n etc._n his_o strength_n may-have_a the_o glory_n therefore_o go_v to_o god_n and_o say_v lord_n i_o will_v have_v more_o faith_n thou_o will_v have_v i_o to_o perfect_v it_o but_o all_o perfection_n be_v in_o thou_o and_o i_o can_v by_o my_o mere_a strength_n ripen_v what_o thou_o give_v but_o thou_o can_v water_v what_o thou_o plant_a though_o it_o be_v sow_v a_o weak_a body_n yet_o thou_o can_v make_v it_o rise_v a_o strong_a body_n though_o faith_n at_o first_o be_v but_o as_o a_o grain_n of_o mustardseed_n yet_o thoucan_v cause_v it_o to_o blossom_n and_o to_o spread_v itself_o into_o a_o high_a measure_n therefore_o thou_o who_o alone_a can_v do_v it_o do_v it_o for_o thy_o weak_a servant_n thou_o must_v o_o say_v such_o a_o one_o will_v you_o have_v i_o to_o believe_v or_o imagine_v you_o that_o i_o can_v do_v so_o i_o who_o feel_v the_o very_a wrath_n of_o god_n in_o my_o soul_n and_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o almighty_a wound_v i_o for_o my_o transgression_n what_o can_v or_o 〈◊〉_d i_o believe_v mercy_n for_o i_o who_o now_o feel_v wrath_n upon_o i_o can_v i_o believe_v that_o god_n will_v be_v merciful_a who_o i_o sensible_o apprehend_v to_o be_v wrathful_a this_o be_v a_o notable_a case_n and_o sol._n need_v a_o wary_a and_o circumspect_a resolution_n nevertheless_o i_o shall_v at_o least_o endeavour_n to_o ungirt_a this_o burden_n for_o a_o trouble_a soul_n 1._o there_o be_v two_o sort_n of_o person_n who_o in_o this_o life_n may_v feel_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n first_o such_o as_o be_v unquestionable_o wicked_a of_o who_o some_o of_o they_o feel_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n as_o the_o begin_n of_o their_o everlasting_a perdition_n that_o wrath_n inflict_v on_o they_o be_v but_o the_o begin_n of_o a_o just_a hell_n due_a unto_o they_o thus_o judas_n feel_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o some_o of_o they_o feel_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n as_o a_o mean_n for_o their_o humiliation_n and_o conversion_n 〈◊〉_d they_o in_o act_n 2._o 37._o who_o be_v prick_v in_o their_o heart_n and_o thereupon_o cry_v out_o what_o shall_v we_o do_v feel_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n second_o such_o as_o be_v unquestionable_o good_a of_o who_o some_o have_v feel_v god_n wrath_n in_o case_n of_o desertion_n as_o heman_n ezra_n job_n and_o other_o and_o some_o in_o case_n of_o notorious_a corruption_n or_o sin_v as_o david_n who_o bone_n be_v break_v for_o it_o and_o god_n face_n hide_v from_o he_o for_o it_o and_o his_o moisture_n turn_v into_o the_o drought_n of_o summer_n 2._o again_o you_o must_v distinguish_v of_o those_o effect_n which_o appear_v in_o person_n under_o the_o sense_n of_o divine_a wrath_n for_o they_o be_v twofold_a 1._o some_o feel_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o be_v either_o only_o enrage_v against_o god_n with_o blasphemy_n or_o enrage_v their_o heart_n the_o more_o to_o go_v on_o in_o sin_v against_o god_n think_v at_o least_o by_o the_o pleasure_n of_o sin_n to_o drown_v the_o sense_n of_o wrath_n or_o run_v into_o absolute_a despair_n of_o god_n mercy_n and_o therefore_o never_o attempt_v any_o course_n of_o repentance_n because_o they_o give_v up_o all_o hope_n of_o mercy_n where_o there_o be_v such_o a_o sense_n of_o wrath_n as_o this_o in_o all_o respect_n and_o for_o ever_o the_o condition_n be_v very_o fearful_a 2._o some_o feel_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o be_v hereupon_o occasional_o induce_v either_o to_o the_o study_n and_o care_n of_o a_o holy_a reformation_n of_o their_o sinful_a heart_n and_o way_n or_o to_o a_o particular_a restauration_n of_o themselves_o from_o gross_a sin_n into_o which_o they_o be_v fall_v and_o for_o which_o now_o they_o feel_v the_o sore_a displeasure_n of_o a_o angry_a father_n if_o thy_o condition_n be_v either_o of_o these_o that_o thou_o feel_v wrath_n and_o that_o have_v drive_v thou_o to_o a_o search_n of_o thy_o natural_a estate_n and_o to_o the_o discovery_n of_o it_o and_o to_o a_o humble_v for_o it_o and_o to_o all_o the_o mean_n by_o which_o thou_o may_v be_v deliver_v as_o well_o and_o rather_o from_o thy_o sinfulness_n as_o from_o god_n wrath_n or_o if_o this_o wrath_n feel_v awaken_v thy_o conscience_n and_o have_v be_v a_o mean_n to_o scourge_v thou_o out_o of_o some_o particular_a sin_v to_o thy_o former_a and_o better_a walking_n with_o god_n thou_o may_v now_o safe_o believe_v on_o mercy_n yea_o though_o thou_o as_o yet_o feel_v wrath_n yet_o may_v thou_o believe_v mercy_n and_o my_o reason_n be_v this_o because_o now_o mercy_n be_v thy_o
