of_o his_o come_n to_o christ_n now_o to_o speak_v of_o his_o prayer_n or_o petition_n make_v to_o christ_n first_o to_o clear_v the_o sense_n of_o the_o word_n beseech_v he_o or_o entreat_v or_o pray_v he_o to_o cure_v he_o if_o it_o be_v his_o will_n for_o this_o be_v that_o he_o pray_v for_o as_o the_o word_n follow_v do_v manifest_o show_v object_n kneel_v to_o he_o object_n st._n luke_n 5._o use_v 4_o use_v 4._o this_o show_v that_o such_o as_o make_v no_o conscience_n of_o keep_v the_o sabbath_n well_o be_v their_o own_o enemy_n they_o be_v enemy_n to_o their_o own_o profit_n and_o good_a both_o spiritual_a and_o temporal_a they_o forsake_v their_o own_o mercy_n deprive_v themselves_o not_o only_o of_o that_o spiritual_a good_a which_o they_o may_v reap_v in_o their_o soul_n by_o the_o duty_n of_o the_o sabbath_n but_o also_o of_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n upon_o their_o temporal_a and_o outward_a estate_n nay_o they_o bring_v a_o curse_n on_o it_o see_v jer._n 17._o use_v 5_o use_v 5._o to_o confute_v and_o condemn_v the_o ignorance_n of_o such_o as_o complain_v of_o wrong_n and_o injury_n do_v to_o they_o if_o they_o be_v urge_v to_o the_o strict_a keep_n of_o the_o sabbath_n or_o restrain_v from_o the_o breach_n of_o it_o by_o vain_a and_o idle_a sport_n or_o otherwise_o they_o think_v this_o a_o great_a wrong_n to_o they_o whereas_o it_o be_v for_o they_o from_o profane_v this_o day_n it_o be_v for_o their_o good_a to_o be_v urge_v strict_o to_o the_o keep_a oâ—_n the_o sabbath_n and_o to_o be_v restrain_v and_o hold_v from_o break_v it_o then_o of_o the_o outward_a keep_n of_o the_o sabbath_n if_o the_o case_n stand_v so_o that_o either_o the_o sabbath_n be_v to_o be_v break_v or_o else_o some_o work_n of_o mercy_n tend_v to_o the_o good_a of_o ourselves_o or_o other_o be_v to_o be_v omit_v we_o must_v rather_o neglect_v the_o outward_a observance_n of_o the_o sabbath_n for_o the_o time_n than_o omit_v that_o work_n of_o mercy_n see_v matth._n 12._o 12._o note_v withal_o that_o this_o must_v be_v understand_v of_o the_o case_n of_o present_a necessity_n when_o there_o be_v a_o present_a necessity_n of_o do_v a_o work_n of_o mercy_n for_o the_o good_a of_o man_n so_o as_o if_o it_o be_v defer_v some_o great_a hurt_n will_v ensue_v to_o man._n for_o example_n in_o time_n of_o dangerous_a sickness_n we_o may_v go_v and_o visit_v the_o sick_a if_o we_o know_v of_o their_o case_n and_o have_v a_o call_n to_o it_o though_o it_o be_v with_o hindrance_n of_o some_o other_o sabbath_n duty_n so_o we_o may_v in_o the_o same_o case_n send_v to_o the_o physician_n for_o his_o advice_n and_o help_n though_o it_o be_v upon_o the_o sabbath_n and_o the_o physician_n may_v travel_v to_o the_o sick_a and_o minister_n physic_n to_o they_o on_o that_o day_n yet_o by_o the_o way_n note_n that_o this_o make_v nothing_o for_o defence_n of_o those_o that_o send_v to_o the_o physician_n on_o the_o sabbath_n needless_o when_o they_o may_v as_o well_o send_v on_o other_o day_n again_o suppose_v our_o own_o or_o our_o neighbour_n good_n or_o substance_n be_v in_o present_a danger_n upon_o the_o sabbath_n day_n as_o a_o house_n on_o fire_n or_o a_o ox_n or_o other_o beast_n fall_v into_o a_o ditch_n we_o may_v use_v mean_n to_o save_v they_o though_o it_o be_v with_o hindrance_n to_o the_o keep_n of_o the_o sabbath_n at_o that_o time_n these_o instance_n may_v serve_v for_o the_o clear_n of_o this_o point_n that_o in_o the_o case_n of_o present_a necessity_n the_o good_a of_o man_n be_v to_o be_v prefer_v before_o the_o outward_a keep_n of_o the_o sabbath_n so_o much_o of_o the_o 27_o verse_n mark_v 2._o 28._o wherefore_o the_o son_n of_o man_n etc._n etc._n 1619._o aug._n 22._o 1619._o here_o be_v a_o second_o to_o the_o word_n in_o their_o outward_a action_n but_o do_v not_o in_o their_o heart_n and_o conscience_n yield_v subjection_n to_o the_o word_n by_o believe_v and_o embrace_v it_o inward_o and_o by_o frame_v all_o their_o thought_n and_o affection_n to_o it_o nay_o their_o heart_n go_v still_o after_o their_o old_a sin_n on_o the_o other_o side_n some_o profess_v to_o have_v obedient_a and_o religious_a heart_n towards_o god_n and_o yet_o their_o outward_a carriage_n be_v profane_a and_o wicked_a such_o must_v know_v that_o true_a obedience_n must_v be_v of_o the_o whole_a man_n both_o outward_a and_o inward_a else_o god_n accept_v it_o not_o 1_o cor._n 6._o ult_n glorify_v god_n in_o your_o body_n and_o spirit_n etc._n etc._n other_o do_v good_a duty_n but_o not_o in_o faith_n mar._n 6._o but_o he_o will_v not_o do_v all_o that_o be_v require_v he_o will_v not_o be_v obedient_a to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o seven_o commandment_n in_o forbear_v to_o commit_v incest_n sincere_a obedienc_n to_o the_o word_n use_v 2_o use_v 2._o let_v all_o examine_v themselves_o by_o this_o whether_o they_o be_v good_a hearer_n or_o not_o if_o we_o will_v know_v this_o look_v whether_o we_o bring_v forth_o the_o true_a fruit_n of_o it_o look_v what_o sincere_a obedience_n thou_o yielde_v to_o it_o in_o thy_o heart_n and_o life_n if_o thou_o be_v careful_a and_o do_v constant_o labour_v to_o frame_v thy_o heart_n and_o life_n unto_o the_o doctrine_n which_o thou_o have_v be_v teach_v this_o show_v thou_o to_o be_v a_o good_a hearer_n but_o if_o there_o be_v no_o such_o unfeigned_a care_n and_o endeavour_v in_o thou_o thou_o be_v a_o barren_a and_o fruitless_a hearer_n never_o the_o better_a for_o all_o that_o thou_o have_v hear_v never_o the_o near_o to_o manifest_a in_o due_a time_n that_o be_v to_o say_v either_o in_o this_o world_n and_o before_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n or_o else_o at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n 1_o cor._n 4._o 5._o use_v who_o take_v little_a or_o no_o heed_n to_o the_o matter_n and_o substance_n of_o the_o doctrine_n teach_v in_o the_o public_a ministry_n yet_o many_o such_o there_o be_v who_o rest_n only_o in_o the_o outward_a sound_n of_o the_o word_n or_o in_o the_o eloquence_n or_o good_a voice_n of_o the_o preacher_n but_o never_o take_v heed_n to_o the_o matter_n and_o substance_n of_o the_o doctrine_n nor_o once_o serious_o consider_v
as_o we_o see_v in_o cain_n who_o have_v a_o guilty_a conscience_n be_v afraid_a that_o every_o one_o that_o find_v he_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o kill_v he_o gen._n 4._o 14._o 3._o to_o this_o add_v the_o natural_a constitution_n of_o the_o body_n of_o some_o good_a christian_n which_o make_v they_o the_o more_o apt_a and_o inclinable_a to_o such_o immoderate_a fearfulness_n 4._o there_o be_v flesh_n as_o well_o as_o spirit_n in_o the_o best_a now_o the_o flesh_n be_v weak_a though_o the_o spirit_n be_v ready_a matth._n 26._o 41._o use_v 1_o use_v 1._o this_o serve_v to_o comfort_n and_o stay_v the_o mind_n of_o those_o weak_a christian_n who_o complain_v much_o of_o this_o timorousness_n in_o time_n of_o danger_n and_o trouble_n and_o be_v much_o discourage_v therewith_o and_o be_v sometime_o tempt_v thereupon_o to_o doubt_n whether_o they_o be_v god_n child_n and_o whether_o they_o have_v any_o faith_n in_o they_o at_o all_o such_o must_v know_v and_o remember_v this_o that_o even_o the_o best_a christian_n be_v subject_a to_o such_o timorousness_n and_o be_v sometime_o trouble_v therewith_o in_o time_n of_o great_a distress_n therefore_o let_v none_o conclude_v that_o they_o have_v no_o faith_n at_o all_o because_o they_o be_v apt_a to_o fear_v immoderate_o in_o time_n of_o danger_n for_o this_o do_v not_o follow_v there_o may_v be_v true_a faith_n in_o those_o that_o be_v sometime_o timorous_a in_o time_n of_o danger_n as_o we_o see_v here_o in_o christ_n disciple_n such_o timorousness_n may_v argue_v weakness_n but_o not_o a_o total_a want_n of_o faith_n yet_o those_o that_o feel_v this_o infirmity_n of_o immoderate_a fearfulness_n in_o themselves_o at_o such_o time_n must_v take_v heed_n they_o do_v not_o allow_v it_o in_o themselves_o but_o strive_v cause_n the_o fear_n of_o the_o wicked_a proceed_v from_o want_n of_o faith_n but_o the_o timorousness_n of_o the_o godly_a come_v only_o from_o the_o weakness_n of_o faith_n in_o they_o 2._o they_o differ_v in_o this_o that_o the_o wicked_a be_v whole_o overcome_v of_o fear_n in_o time_n of_o danger_n be_v not_o able_a to_o resist_v and_o vanquish_v that_o fear_n but_o the_o godly_a do_v by_o understand_v 1._o in_o comparison_n of_o the_o wicked_a 2._o so_o far_o forth_o as_o faith_n have_v the_o upper_a hand_n in_o they_o yet_o because_o there_o be_v some_o infidelity_n in_o they_o they_o sometime_o fear_v etc._n etc._n use_v 2_o use_v 2._o see_v good_a christian_n be_v subject_a to_o immoderate_a fear_n in_o time_n of_o great_a danger_n and_o trouble_n learn_v to_o judge_v charitable_o of_o such_o when_o we_o see_v they_o discover_v much_o timorousness_n at_o such_o time_n and_o beware_v of_o censure_v they_o upon_o this_o for_o hypocrisy_n for_o so_o we_o may_v as_o well_o censure_v christ_n disciple_n to_o be_v void_a of_o all_o true_a faith_n because_o they_o sometime_o be_v fearful_a in_o time_n of_o danger_n remember_v in_o this_o case_n that_o there_o be_v weakness_n of_o faith_n in_o the_o best_a christian_n and_o that_o there_o be_v also_o some_o corruption_n of_o nature_n in_o they_o and_o it_o may_v be_v also_o that_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o natural_a temper_n of_o their_o body_n they_o be_v more_o subject_n to_o fearfullness_n than_o some_o other_o these_o thing_n consider_v learn_v to_o judge_n favourable_o of_o good_a christian_n in_o this_o case_n of_o timerousness_n in_o time_n of_o great_a danger_n or_o trouble_n use_v 3_o use_v 3._o this_o further_a show_v that_o even_o the_o best_a of_o we_o have_v need_v to_o arm_v ourselves_o beforehand_o against_o such_o immoderate_a fearfullnesse_n in_o time_n of_o trouble_n and_o danger_n and_o to_o use_v all_o good_a mean_n to_o resist_v it_o remedy_n against_o excessive_a fearfullnesse_n in_o time_n of_o danger_n the_o remedy_n be_v of_o two_o sort_n the_o first_o consist_v in_o meditation_n the_o second_o consist_v in_o practice_n touch_v the_o former_a sort_n 1._o consider_v this_o that_o fearfullnesse_n in_o time_n of_o danger_n be_v forbid_v and_o condemn_v in_o scripture_n as_o a_o sin_n prov._n 3._o 25._o be_v not_o afraid_a of_o sudden_a fear_n neither_o convince_v the_o old_a world_n by_o the_o preach_a of_o noah_n before_o he_o bring_v the_o flood_n upon_o they_o and_o the_o jew_n by_o the_o preach_a of_o sundry_a prophet_n before_o he_o bring_v to_o cry_v aloud_o against_o thy_o most_o secret_a sin_n both_o in_o this_o life_n and_o at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n see_v gen._n 4._o 10._o so_o much_o of_o the_o end_n why_o our_o saviour_n will_v his_o apostle_n to_o shake_v off_o the_o dust_n of_o their_o foot_n before_o the_o contemner_n of_o they_o and_o their_o doctrine_n that_o it_o may_v be_v a_o witness_n against_o they_o now_o to_o speak_v of_o the_o ratify_n of_o that_o testimony_n by_o a_o fearful_a threaten_n of_o judgement_n denounce_v by_o our_o saviour_n own_o mouth_n against_o such_o contemner_n in_o these_o word_n we_o can_v be_v good_a and_o sound_a christian_n and_o yet_o to_o escape_v trouble_n to_o feel_v no_o storm_n etc._n etc._n or_o to_o feel_v but_o few_o it_o can_v be_v through_o many_o tribulation_n we_o must_v enter_v into_o god_n kingdom_n it_o must_v be_v so_o if_o we_o will_v reign_v with_o christ_n we_o must_v first_o suffer_v with_o he_o in_o this_o life_n and_o be_v consecrate_v through_o goodness_n and_o righteousness_n which_o he_o suppose_v to_o be_v much_o more_o perfect_a than_o it_o be_v 2._o upon_o ignorance_n of_o the_o true_a scope_n and_o meaning_n of_o the_o law_n which_o he_o suppose_v to_o require_v no_o more_o but_o outward_a obedience_n which_o he_o have_v in_o some_o sort_n perform_v from_o his_o youth_n he_o think_v he_o have_v keep_v the_o commandment_n from_o his_o youth_n now_o although_o this_o ignorance_n and_o erroneous_a conceit_n be_v evil_a and_o discommendable_a in_o this_o young_a ruler_n yet_o here_o be_v something_o also_o good_a and_o commendable_a in_o he_o which_o be_v employ_v by_o these_o word_n viz._n his_o care_n not_o only_o to_o know_v the_o commandment_n of_o the_o law_n but_o also_o to_o observe_v and_o keep_v they_o in_o some_o sort_n by_o outward_a obedience_n and_o conformity_n to_o they_o and_o that_o from_o his_o youth_n the_o word_n be_v clear_v there_o be_v two_o thing_n which_o may_v be_v consider_v in_o they_o 1._o his_o reverend_a manner_n of_o speak_v to_o our_o saviour_n call_v he_o master_n 2._o the_o matter_n of_o his_o speech_n or_o reply_n make_v to_o our_o saviour_n former_a answer_n of_o the_o first_o i_o have_v before_o speak_v of_o the_o second_o first_o i_o will_v speak_v of_o such_o instruction_n as_o may_v be_v gather_v from_o that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o commendable_a in_o this_o young_a man_n observe_v 1_o observe_v 1._o that_o outward_a obedience_n and_o conformity_n to_o the_o law_n and_o commandment_n of_o god_n be_v a_o good_a and_o commendable_a thing_n in_o itself_o yea_o it_o be_v necessary_a and_o require_v of_o god_n at_o our_o hand_n this_o care_n of_o outward_a conformity_n to_o the_o law_n and_o of_o refrain_v the_o outward_a breach_n of_o it_o be_v good_a and_o commendable_a in_o this_o young_a man_n our_o saviour_n do_v not_o blame_v he_o for_o it_o or_o show_v any_o dislike_n thereof_o but_o on_o the_o contrary_a immediate_o upon_o this_o profession_n make_v of_o his_o outward_a observance_n of_o the_o law_n it_o be_v say_v jesus_n look_v on_o he_o love_v he_o which_o imply_v that_o this_o conscionable_a care_n which_o be_v in_o the_o young_a man_n to_o keep_v the_o commandment_n though_o but_o outward_o be_v one_o main_a cause_n of_o our_o saviour_n love_n he_o so_o that_o outward_a obedience_n and_o conformity_n to_o the_o law_n of_o god_n in_o life_n and_o practice_n be_v not_o evil_a but_o good_a commendable_a and_o necessary_a in_o itself_o for_o all_o christian_n though_o we_o be_v not_o to_o rest_v in_o this_o outward_a obedience_n but_o above_o all_o to_o strive_v unto_o the_o inward_a and_o spiritual_a yet_o even_o the_o outward_a be_v necessary_a and_o command_v of_o god_n 1_o cor._n 6._o 20._o glorify_v god_n in_o your_o body_n and_o spirit_n etc._n etc._n the_o lord_n will_v have_v the_o obedience_n of_o the_o whole_a man_n and_o therefore_o not_o only_o of_o the_o inward_a but_o also_o of_o the_o and_o yet_o our_o saviour_n say_v except_o our_o righteousness_n exceed_v they_o etc._n etc._n how_o unlikely_a yea_o impossible_a be_v it_o that_o such_o shall_v yield_v any_o true_a inward_a and_o spiritual_a obedience_n to_o the_o law_n of_o god_n if_o they_o do_v not_o that_o which_o be_v easy_o how_o shall_v they_o do_v that_o which_o be_v hard_a yet_o how_o many_o be_v there_o who_o live_v in_o gross_a outward_a sin_n and_o yet_o pretend_v that_o their_o heart_n be_v good_a etc._n etc._n as_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o the_o heart_n to_o be_v good_a where_o the_o outward_a life_n and_o carriage_n be_v profane_a loose_a and_o wicked_a as_o if_o a_o good_a tree_n can_v bring_v forth_o evil_a fruit_n or_o a_o pure_a fountain_n send_v forth_o impure_a stream_n etc._n etc._n observe_v 2_o observe_v 2._o in_o that_o this_o young_a man_n have_v care_n to_o keep_v the_o commandment_n at_o least_o outward_o even_o from_o his_o childhood_n and_o first_o beginning_n of_o his_o youth_n this_o teach_v we_o that_o it_o be_v a_o good_a and_o commendable_a thing_n in_o christian_n to_o begin_v betimes_o to_o yield_v obedience_n to_o the_o law_n of_o god_n even_o in_o their_o youth_n yea_o from_o their_o childhood_n so_o soon_o as_o ever_o they_o come_v to_o year_n of_o any_o understanding_n to_o conceive_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o law_n etc._n etc._n psal_n 119._o 9_o god_n they_o practise_v some_o duty_n but_o not_o all_o that_o be_v require_v they_o keep_v some_o belove_a and_o darling_a sin_n or_o sin_n still_o as_o herod_n do_v so_o far_o as_o stand_v with_o their_o worldly_a profit_n or_o carnal_a delight_n they_o be_v content_a to_o obey_v god_n but_o in_o those_o commandment_n which_o do_v most_o direct_o cross_v their_o corrupt_a nature_n and_o sinful_a lust_n or_o do_v hinder_v their_o worldly_a profit_n and_o gain_v in_o those_o they_o withdraw_v their_o obedience_n but_o all_o this_o be_v hypocritical_a and_o counterfeit_a obedience_n such_o as_o god_n accept_v not_o but_o rather_o hate_v and_o detest_v such_o therefore_o must_v remember_v what_o be_v say_v jam._n 2._o 10._o who_o keep_v the_o whole_a law_n and_o offend_v but_o in_o one_o point_n be_v guilty_a of_o all_o such_o a_o union_n there_o be_v between_o all_o part_n and_o commandment_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n that_o one_o can_v be_v violate_v without_o the_o breach_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n in_o as_o much_o as_o by_o the_o breach_n of_o one_o the_o authority_n of_o god_n the_o lawgiver_n be_v contemn_v as_o well_o as_o by_o the_o breach_n of_o all_o beside_o that_o any_o one_o sin_n or_o breach_n of_o any_o one_o commandment_n of_o god_n be_v live_v in_o without_o repentance_n be_v fearful_a and_o dangerous_a be_v sufficient_a to_o condemn_v the_o sinner_n ezek._n 18._o 10._o if_o he_o beget_v a_o son_n that_o be_v a_o robber_n and_o a_o shedder_n of_o blood_n and_o do_v the_o like_a to_o any_o one_o of_o these_o thing_n etc._n etc._n of_o obey_v god_n to_o half_n and_o think_v not_o to_o please_v he_o or_o to_o have_v true_a comfort_n in_o thy_o own_o conscience_n by_o such_o hypocritical_a obedience_n take_v heed_n of_o bear_v they_o come_v to_o church_n due_o hear_v the_o word_n receive_v the_o sacrament_n and_o not_o only_o so_o but_o use_v prayer_n in_o their_o family_n though_o this_o be_v whole_o neglect_v by_o a_o great_a many_o if_o they_o have_v some_o care_n of_o the_o outward_a sanctify_v of_o the_o sabbath_n and_o if_o withal_o they_o do_v perform_v such_o outward_a duty_n of_o charity_n and_o justice_n towards_o man_n as_o be_v require_v in_o the_o second_o table_n of_o the_o commandment_n then_o they_o think_v all_o be_v well_o and_o they_o rest_v in_o this_o outward_a conformity_n to_o the_o law_n in_o the_o mean_a time_n make_v no_o conscience_n of_o inward_a and_o spiritual_a obedience_n to_o the_o same_o but_o harbour_v gross_a sin_n and_o corruption_n in_o their_o heart_n both_o against_o god_n and_o man._n thus_o be_v it_o with_o many_o if_o not_o with_o the_o great_a part_n of_o such_o as_o bear_v the_o name_n of_o christian_n now_o adays_o which_o show_v how_o great_a the_o number_n be_v of_o formal_a and_o close_a hypocrite_n and_o how_o small_a the_o number_n be_v of_o sound_a christian_n and_o how_o true_a it_o be_v which_o the_o scripture_n have_v foretell_v touch_v these_o last_o and_o dangerous_a time_n in_o which_o we_o now_o live_v that_o man_n shall_v have_v a_o outward_a form_n of_o godliness_n deny_v the_o inward_a power_n and_o life_n of_o it_o 2_o tim._n 3._o formal_a hypocrisy_n be_v one_o of_o the_o reign_a sin_n of_o these_o time_n the_o epidemical_a disease_n of_o christian_n yet_o fearful_a and_o dangerous_a to_o be_v lament_v with_o a_o fountain_n of_o tear_n use_v 2_o use_v 2._o for_o admonition_n to_o every_o one_o of_o we_o to_o take_v heed_n of_o this_o property_n of_o formal_a and_o close_a hypocrite_n that_o we_o do_v not_o rest_v in_o outward_a conformity_n and_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n of_o god_n with_o the_o outward_a man_n and_o in_o outward_a carriage_n as_o if_o this_o be_v sufficient_a and_o as_o much_o as_o god_n require_v but_o above_o all_o to_o make_v conscience_n of_o yield_v the_o true_a inward_a obedience_n of_o the_o heart_n unto_o every_o commandment_n of_o god_n remember_v that_o the_o law_n of_o god_n be_v spiritual_a bind_v the_o heart_n and_o conscience_n and_o that_o god_n himself_o be_v a_o spirit_n and_o will_v be_v obey_v in_o spirit_n and_o truth_n the_o rather_o let_v we_o take_v heed_n of_o this_o formal_a hypocrisy_n and_o rest_v in_o outward_a obedience_n to_o

same_o there_o be_v many_o such_o who_o give_v christ_n and_o his_o minister_n the_o hear_n and_o this_o be_v all_o for_o in_o life_n and_o practice_n they_o do_v as_o they_o listen_v walk_v after_o their_o lust_n and_o go_v on_o in_o their_o old_a sin_n without_o reformation_n like_o those_o ezek._n 33._o 31._o who_o come_v and_o sit_v before_o the_o prophet_n and_o hear_v his_o word_n but_o will_v not_o do_v they_o for_o their_o heart_n go_v after_o covetousness_n many_o live_v quite_o contrary_a to_o that_o which_o be_v teach_v they_o by_o christ_n in_o his_o word_n as_o if_o they_o know_v a_o better_a way_n to_o heaven_n other_o yield_v some_o kind_n of_o obedience_n to_o christ_n doctrine_n but_o not_o such_o as_o they_o ought_v no_o true_a and_o sincere_a obedience_n some_o yield_v outward_a obedience_n in_o their_o word_n action_n and_o outward_a behaviour_n but_o no_o true_a inward_a subjection_n of_o heart_n mind_n and_o conscience_n they_o obey_v not_o from_o the_o heart_n but_o only_o show_v some_o outward_a conformity_n to_o the_o word_n of_o christ_n which_o be_v gross_a hypocrisy_n and_o hateful_a to_o christ_n other_o obey_v christ_n in_o some_o thing_n but_o not_o in_o all_o part_n of_o his_o word_n like_o herod_n so_o far_o as_o this_o obedience_n will_v stand_v with_o their_o carnal_a lust_n and_o with_o their_o worldly_a profit_n and_o pleasure_n they_o be_v content_a to_o yield_v it_o but_o when_o the_o word_n of_o christ_n do_v cross_v they_o or_o cut_v they_o short_a in_o those_o thing_n which_o they_o so_o much_o affect_v here_o they_o withdraw_v their_o obedience_n other_o yield_v obedience_n to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n for_o a_o time_n but_o be_v not_o constant_a therein_o they_o begin_v a_o good_a course_n but_o hold_v not_o out_o in_o it_o they_o begin_v in_o the_o spirit_n and_o end_n in_o the_o flesh_n such_o there_o be_v too_o many_o who_o have_v for_o a_o time_n make_v show_v of_o obedience_n to_o the_o word_n of_o christ_n afterward_o fall_v away_o and_o embrace_v this_o world_n with_o demas_n etc._n etc._n like_o the_o stony_a ground_n they_o receive_v the_o word_n of_o christ_n with_o joy_n at_o the_o first_o and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n for_o a_o time_n but_o because_o they_o have_v no_o root_n they_o fall_v away_o thus_o among_o many_o that_o be_v outward_a hearer_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o doctrine_n how_o few_o do_v yield_v true_a obedience_n to_o it_o now_o what_o be_v such_o the_o better_a for_o their_o outward_a hear_v of_o christ_n nothing_o at_o all_o they_o reap_v no_o true_a good_a by_o it_o they_o be_v never_o the_o near_o to_o salvation_n their_o estate_n before_o god_n never_o the_o better_a nay_o it_o be_v the_o worse_o because_o the_o more_o mean_n of_o teach_v they_o have_v have_v if_o they_o be_v not_o answerable_a in_o obedience_n the_o great_a be_v their_o sin_n and_o condemnation_n joh._n 15._o 22._o think_v of_o it_o thou_o that_o be_v a_o outward_a hearer_n of_o christ_n word_n and_o have_v perhaps_o be_v so_o for_o a_o long_a time_n but_o make_v no_o conscience_n of_o yield_v true_a obedience_n to_o it_o thou_o may_v for_o all_o this_o be_v a_o but_o above_o all_o to_o make_v conscience_n of_o yield_a obedience_n to_o the_o same_o remember_v that_o this_o be_v the_o end_n of_o all_o christ_n teach_v and_o of_o all_o our_o hear_n of_o his_o word_n and_o doctrine_n preach_v by_o his_o minister_n that_o we_o shall_v yield_v obedience_n to_o that_o we_o hear_v in_o this_o stand_v our_o happiness_n and_o without_o this_o all_o our_o hear_v be_v but_o lose_a labour_n if_o we_o be_v not_o doer_n of_o the_o word_n of_o christ_n but_o hearer_n only_o we_o deceive_v ourselves_o jam._n 1._o 32._o see_v therefore_o that_o we_o join_v obedience_n with_o our_o hear_n and_o look_v also_o to_o the_o manner_n and_o kind_n of_o our_o obedience_n that_o it_o be_v such_o as_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v that_o it_o be_v of_o the_o whole_a man_n not_o only_o outward_a but_o inward_a of_o heart_n soul_n and_o conscience_n that_o it_o be_v universal_a to_o all_o part_n of_o the_o word_n and_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n not_o to_o some_o only_o that_o it_o be_v constant_a etc._n etc._n now_o further_o that_o we_o may_v be_v obedient_a hearer_n of_o christ_n two_o duty_n be_v necessary_a to_o be_v practise_v 1._o to_o remove_v those_o impediment_n which_o may_v hinder_v we_o from_o obedience_n to_o christ_n word_n and_o doctrine_n 2._o to_o use_v the_o best_a help_n and_o mean_n to_o further_o we_o in_o obedience_n to_o the_o same_o of_o the_o first_o the_o hindrance_n to_o be_v remove_v be_v these_o 1._o all_o corrupt_a and_o sinful_a lust_n in_o general_a these_o we_o must_v labour_v to_o cast_v off_o by_o true_a repentance_n and_o to_o have_v they_o true_o mortify_v in_o we_o jam._n 1._o 21._o lay_v apart_o all_o filthiness_n and_o superfluity_n of_o naughtiness_n and_o receive_v with_o meekness_n the_o engraft_a word_n etc._n etc._n and_o then_o ver._n 22._o be_v you_o doer_n of_o the_o word_n and_o not_o hearer_n only_o 2._o more_o particular_o some_o special_a lust_n and_o sin_n be_v to_o be_v cast_v off_o and_o remove_v that_o they_o hinder_v not_o our_o obedience_n of_o christ_n 1._o unbelief_n and_o doubt_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o that_o doctrine_n which_o christ_n teach_v we_o by_o his_o word_n and_o minister_n this_o keep_v from_o obedience_n heb._n 4._o 2._o the_o word_n preach_v do_v nor_o profit_v they_o because_o not_o mix_v with_o faith_n etc._n etc._n therefore_o labour_n heart_n be_v so_o harden_v in_o unbelief_n and_o other_o sin_n etc._n etc._n therefore_o if_o we_o will_v be_v obedient_a to_o christ_n doctrine_n labour_n and_o strive_v against_o this_o hardness_n
