god_n they_o by_o their_o very_a struggle_v to_o prepare_v themselves_o many_o time_n do_v ensnare_v themselves_o it_o may_v be_v thou_o have_v thought_n of_o atheism_n or_o other_o wickedness_n the_o very_a struggle_v with_o those_o thought_n may_v ensnare_v thy_o heart_n now_o the_o better_a way_n be_v to_o fall_v upon_o prayer_n and_o to_o cry_v to_o god_n to_o help_v thou_o against_o they_o for_o while_o thou_o be_v struggle_v and_o strive_v with_o those_o thought_n thou_o be_v strive_v with_o the_o corruption_n of_o thy_o heart_n and_o with_o the_o devil_n all_o alone_a but_o now_o when_o thou_o fall_v to_o the_o duty_n thou_o call_v in_o the_o help_n of_o god_n and_o of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o that_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n better_o while_o thou_o be_v muse_v plod_a and_o trouble_v thy_o heart_n that_o way_n i_o say_v thou_o be_v struggle_v alone_o but_o now_o when_o thou_o fall_v upon_o the_o duty_n than_o thou_o call_v in_o help_n from_o god_n and_o so_o thou_o be_v more_o able_a to_o the_o performance_n of_o the_o duty_n than_o thou_o be_v before_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v the_o best_a way_n to_o fall_v upon_o a_o duty_n though_o thou_o can_v not_o find_v thy_o heart_n prepare_v as_o thou_o do_v desire_v the_o very_a fall_n upon_o it_o will_v fit_v thou_o for_o it_o and_o thus_o much_o for_o the_o answer_n unto_o those_o two_o case_n of_o conscience_n now_o than_o we_o be_v to_o proceed_v further_o in_o the_o open_n of_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n in_o holy_a duty_n thus_o much_o for_o the_o preparation_n of_o the_o heart_n but_o when_o the_o heart_n come_v to_o it_o in_o what_o manner_n shall_v the_o duty_n be_v perform_v so_o as_o the_o name_n of_o god_n may_v be_v sanctify_v in_o the_o duty_n or_o what_o be_v the_o behaviour_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n when_o it_o be_v in_o the_o very_a act_n of_o the_o duty_n to_o that_o i_o answer_v first_o in_o general_a thus_o when_o the_o soul_n labour_v to_o perform_v duty_n so_o as_o god_n may_v have_v such_o glory_n from_o the_o duty_n aâ—_n be_v fit_a for_o a_o god_n to_o have_v in_o some_o measure_n then_o do_v i_o sanctify_v god_n name_n you_o will_v say_v this_o be_v a_o very_a hard_a thing_n to_o perform_v a_o duty_n so_o as_o that_o we_o shall_v give_v god_n the_o glory_n that_o be_v fit_a for_o a_o god_n to_o have_v certain_o this_o be_v not_o do_v by_o every_o manner_n of_o performance_n of_o a_o duty_n of_o worship_n yet_o you_o shall_v hear_v this_o open_v to_o you_o and_o i_o hope_v you_o shall_v have_v it_o make_v very_o plain_a before_o you_o first_o therefore_o i_o shall_v show_v you_o that_o when_o we_o be_v to_o perform_v a_o duty_n of_o worship_n we_o shall_v set_v ourselves_o to_o glorify_v god_n as_o a_o god_n that_o be_v to_o do_v it_o in_o that_o manner_n that_o god_n may_v have_v that_o glory_n that_o be_v fit_a for_o a_o god_n to_o have_v as_o now_o in_o the_o duty_n of_o praise_n psal_n 66._o 2._o than_o we_o must_v tender_v up_o such_o a_o present_a as_o be_v suitable_a to_o god_n excellency_n if_o a_o man_n shall_v come_v to_o a_o poor_a man_n to_o give_v a_o present_a if_o it_o be_v not_o worthy_a twelve_o penny_n yet_o it_o may_v be_v take_v well_o but_o if_o you_o be_v to_o tender_v up_o a_o present_a to_o a_o prince_n a_o monarch_n a_o emperor_n than_o you_o must_v tender_v a_o present_a that_o be_v fit_a for_o the_o quality_n of_o the_o preson_z therefore_o in_o malachi_n 1._o 8._o when_o the_o lord_n rebuke_n they_o for_o their_o sacrifice_n that_o they_o be_v such_o poor_a thing_n go_v say_v god_n and_o tender_v up_o this_o to_o your_o governor_n and_o see_v whether_o he_o will_v accept_v of_o it_o or_o no._n so_o certain_o that_o which_o may_v be_v accept_v of_o that_o we_o be_v to_o tender_v up_o our_o service_n to_o god_n who_o be_v the_o great_a king_n of_o king_n and_o lord_n of_o lord_n but_o you_o will_v say_v be_v it_o possible_a for_o any_o creature_n which_o come_v to_o tender_v up_o its_o worship_n to_o god_n to_o tender_v up_o that_o which_o be_v fit_a for_o a_o god_n to_o have_v this_o may_v rather_o be_v a_o discouragement_n unto_o prayer_n or_o any_o other_o duty_n of_o worship_n than_o a_o encouragement_n to_o that_o i_o answer_v thus_o though_o we_o be_v very_o poor_a and_o mean_a yet_o it_o do_v not_o hinder_v but_o we_o may_v tender_v up_o that_o to_o god_n which_o god_n will_v acknowledge_v to_o be_v suitable_a to_o his_o infinite_a excellency_n as_o first_o if_o we_o tender_v up_o to_o god_n all_o that_o we_o have_v though_o we_o be_v never_o so_o poor_a and_o mean_a yet_o if_o god_n have_v the_o strength_n of_o our_o soul_n god_n accept_v it_o for_o we_o be_v to_o know_v that_o god_n do_v not_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o what_o we_o have_v or_o of_o what_o we_o do_v but_o that_o we_o may_v show_v our_o respect_n to_o he_o therefore_o if_o we_o give_v all_o that_o we_o have_v god_n accept_v it_o as_o a_o child_n if_o it_o put_v forth_o all_o its_o strength_n that_o it_o have_v to_o do_v a_o business_n which_o the_o father_n bid_v he_o whether_o the_o business_n be_v dove_n or_o no_o the_o father_n look_v upon_o it_o and_o accept_v it_o as_o suitable_a to_o the_o child_n strength_n and_o it_o show_v the_o respect_n that_o the_o child_n have_v to_o his_o father_n and_o as_o it_o be_v story_v of_o a_o emperor_n that_o when_o a_o poor_a man_n have_v nothing_o to_o offer_v he_o but_o a_o little_a water_n that_o he_o have_v take_v up_o with_o his_o hand_n he_o have_v nothing_o else_o the_o emperor_n accept_v of_o it_o so_o that_o be_v that_o which_o god_n look_v for_o that_o the_o creature_n shall_v lift_v he_o above_o all_o if_o therefore_o when_o thou_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n god_n have_v more_o in_o thy_o heart_n than_o
open_v this_o point_n full_o will_v ask_v some_o time_n first_o therefore_o i_o will_v show_v you_o how_o we_o may_v know_v when_o our_o duty_n be_v act_v by_o our_o natural_a part_n rather_o than_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n second_o how_o we_o may_v know_v whether_o our_o duty_n be_v act_v by_o natural_a conscience_n rather_o than_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n 1._o first_o if_o thou_o be_v act_v by_o natural_a part_n they_o will_v not_o change_v thy_o heart_n man_n that_o do_v perform_v duty_n by_o the_o strength_n of_o natural_a part_n they_o may_v be_v as_o large_a as_o other_o and_o speak_v to_o the_o edification_n of_o other_o but_o those_o duty_n do_v never_o change_v their_o heart_n now_o if_o thou_o be_v act_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n thou_o will_v be_v change_v into_o the_o very_a image_n of_o his_o spirit_n 2._o second_o if_o man_n be_v act_v by_o natural_a part_n they_o will_v not_o carry_v they_o through_o difficulty_n and_o discouragement_n but_o now_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n if_o thou_o have_v act_v by_o he_o though_o thou_o do_v meet_v with_o never_o such_o difficulty_n and_o discouragement_n thou_o will_v be_v carry_v through_o they_o all_o 3._o thou_o may_v know_v it_o by_o this_o wherein_o do_v thou_o account_v the_o excellency_n of_o a_o duty_n to_o consist_v either_o in_o thyself_o or_o other_o thou_o perform_v a_o duty_n now_o it_o may_v be_v thy_o part_n do_v act_v very_o lively_a and_o to_o thy_o credit_n and_o yet_o thy_o conscience_n tell_v thou_o that_o thy_o heart_n be_v straighten_v now_o can_v thou_o rise_v up_o with_o joy_n because_o thou_o have_v thy_o end_n at_o another_o time_n perhaps_o thy_o heart_n be_v more_o trouble_v and_o break_v but_o thou_o do_v not_o express_v thyself_o so_o much_o than_o thou_o be_v discourage_v and_o when_o thou_o see_v another_o perform_v a_o duty_n if_o thou_o see_v but_o any_o fail_n in_o their_o expression_n thou_o pitche_v upon_o that_o and_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o a_o poor_a thing_n thou_o be_v not_o able_a to_o see_v a_o excellency_n in_o holy_a duty_n except_o there_o be_v a_o excellency_n of_o natural_a part_n but_o those_o that_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n they_o can_v find_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n act_v in_o other_o though_o they_o have_v not_o such_o natural_a part_n 4._o those_o that_o be_v act_v by_o their_o natural_a part_n in_o secret_a they_o be_v less_o enlarge_v than_o they_o be_v before_o other_o a_o great_a deal_n their_o part_n act_n much_o before_o other_o but_o what_o be_v there_o between_o god_n and_o their_o own_o soul_n 5._o they_o that_o be_v so_o act_v will_v not_o be_v very_o constant_a you_o shall_v have_v young_a one_o that_o begin_v to_o look_v towards_o religion_n their_o part_n be_v a_o little_a fresh_a and_o they_o be_v mighty_o enlarge_v in_o holy_a duty_n and_o the_o thing_n be_v good_a for_o they_o to_o make_v use_n of_o their_o part_n but_o how_o ordinary_a it_o be_v that_o after_o a_o few_o year_n they_o be_v dead_a and_o dull_a than_o they_o be_v before_o and_o have_v less_o mind_n to_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n than_o they_o have_v former_o be_v this_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n you_o will_v find_v as_o much_o savour_n and_o relish_v in_o they_o afterward_o as_o there_o be_v at_o that_o time_n second_o for_o natural_a conscience_n which_o sometime_o put_v man_n upon_o act_v of_o duty_n and_o indeed_o be_v better_a than_o mere_o natural_a part_n 1._o if_o it_o be_v only_o natural_a conscience_n it_o put_v upon_o duty_n but_o give_v no_o strength_n to_o do_v they_o but_o when_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n put_v thou_o upon_o a_o duty_n it_o give_v thou_o some_o strength_n to_o perform_v it_o some_o strength_n whereby_o thou_o get_v some_o communion_n with_o god_n 2._o if_o it_o be_v natural_a conscience_n it_o put_v upon_o the_o duty_n but_o make_v not_o the_o heart_n glad_a of_o the_o duty_n and_o to_o love_v the_o duty_n but_o if_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n it_o make_v thou_o to_o delight_v in_o it_o and_o to_o love_v it_o 3._o if_o it_o be_v natural_a conscience_n thou_o do_v not_o by_o that_o increase_n thy_o communion_n with_o god_n thou_o do_v thy_o duty_n as_o in_o a_o round_a but_o now_o when_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n put_v thou_o upon_o holy_a duty_n it_o be_v not_o a_o task_n do_v but_o thou_o find_v more_o and_o more_o increase_n in_o communion_n with_o god_n thy_o heart_n more_o raise_v to_o god_n and_o more_o close_v with_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o still_o more_o and_o more_o in_o the_o course_n of_o thy_o life_n i_o have_v a_o little_a converse_n with_o god_n at_o first_o when_o god_n begin_v to_o acquaint_v my_o soul_n with_o his_o way_n but_o through_o his_o mercy_n now_o i_o find_v more_o communion_n with_o he_o and_o so_o thou_o 〈◊〉_d bless_v thyself_o in_o god_n in_o that_o converse_n that_o thou_o have_v in_o communion_n with_o he_o thou_o will_v not_o lose_v that_o communion_n thou_o have_v with_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n for_o all_o the_o world_n other_o have_v their_o companion_n that_o they_o have_v their_o communion_n withal_o much_o good_a may_v do_v they_o but_o the_o lord_n have_v show_v i_o another_o manner_n of_o communion_n which_o my_o soul_n can_v have_v with_o himself_o in_o which_o it_o have_v sweet_a satisfaction_n and_o thus_o you_o have_v have_v seven_o particular_n for_o the_o sanctify_a of_o the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n sermon_n vi._n 1645._o leviticus_n 10._o 3._o i_o will_v be_v sanctify_v in_o they_o that_o come_v nigh_o i_o 4._o again_o as_o natural_a conscience_n do_v give_v no_o strength_n to_o do_v the_o duty_n so_o it_o make_v not_o the_o duty_n to_o be_v strong_a to_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v thus_o thre_n no_n strength_n get_v by_o the_o duty_n they_o be_v not_o by_o one_o duty_n prepare_v for_o another_o but_o the_o way_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v strength_n to_o the_o upright_a that_o be_v when_o a_o gracious_a heart_n be_v in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n worship_n it_o find_v the_o very_a duty_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n to_o be_v strength_n to_o it_o and_o so_o it_o fit_v it_o for_o another_o duty_n 5._o further_o a_o natural_a conscience_n limit_n its_o self_n and_o be_v bound_v that_o be_v so_o much_o as_o will_v serve_v the_o turn_n for_o its_o own_o peace_n and_o quiet_a so_o much_o it_o will_v do_v and_o no_o more_o but_o when_o one_o be_v act_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n one_o be_v enlarge_v without_o any_o limit_n at_o all_o not_o bound_v to_o one_o own_o peace_n for_o the_o more_o peace_n a_o gracious_a heart_n have_v in_o duty_n the_o more_o it_o be_v enlarge_v in_o duty_n now_o a_o natural_a conscience_n that_o put_v to_o duty_n and_o will_v act_v you_o when_o you_o want_v peace_n when_o you_o be_v in_o trouble_n and_o fear_n but_o when_o you_o be_v not_o in_o trouble_n and_o fear_n than_o it_o put_v not_o on_o the_o heart_n to_o performance_n of_o duty_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n put_v on_o the_o soul_n to_o duty_n when_o there_o be_v most_o peace_n and_o comfort_n 6._o a_o little_a will_v serve_v the_o turn_n to_o satisfy_v natural_a conscience_n so_o be_v it_o they_o perform_v the_o duty_n it_o be_v enough_o but_o one_o that_o be_v act_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o duty_n must_v meet_v with_o much_o of_o god_n or_o else_o he_o be_v not_o satisfy_v he_o go_v mourn_v in_o the_o day_n time_n if_o he_o have_v not_o meet_v with_o much_o of_o god_n in_o the_o morning_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n thus_o you_o see_v there_o be_v much_o difference_n between_o the_o act_n of_o natural_a part_n and_o conscience_n in_o duty_n and_o the_o act_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n there_o be_v only_o now_o two_o thing_n more_o for_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n in_o duty_n and_o then_o we_o be_v to_o come_v to_o show_v how_o we_o shall_v sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o duty_n in_o reference_n to_o the_o several_a attribute_n of_o god_n but_o first_o for_o those_o two_o head_n further_n 7._o the_o seven_o thing_n be_v this_o when_o you_o come_v to_o perform_v holy_a duty_n if_o you_o will_v sanctify_v god_n name_n you_o must_v consecrate_v yourselves_o to_o god_n there_o must_v be_v a_o resignation_n of_o soul_n and_o body_n estate_n liberty_n name_n and_o all_o you_o be_v have_v or_o can_v do_v unto_o god_n this_o be_v to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n the_o consecration_n of_o yourselves_o unto_o god_n and_o the_o profess_v of_o this_o be_v the_o performance_n of_o duty_n when_o you_o be_v to_o pray_v be_v a_o very_a good_a thing_n actual_o to_o profess_v yourselves_o to_o be_v god_n to_o profess_v that_o you_o do_v
people_n but_o that_o we_o speak_v too_o in_o show_v how_o we_o draw_v nigh_o to_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n and_o it_o may_v well_o come_v in_o here_o again_o as_o a_o argument_n why_o we_o shall_v sanctify_v god_n name_n 4._o a_o four_o reason_n be_v this_o because_o there_o be_v no_o way_n for_o we_o to_o be_v fit_v for_o the_o receive_n of_o mercy_n from_o god_n through_o those_o duty_n of_o enjoy_v with_o god_n now_o there_o be_v no_o way_n to_o make_v thou_o a_o fit_a subject_n of_o mercy_n or_o capable_a of_o the_o enjoy_n of_o communion_n with_o god_n but_o by_o such_o a_o behaviour_n of_o soul_n as_o this_o be_v that_o have_v be_v speak_v of_o to_o sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n thou_o will_v be_v loath_a to_o lose_v those_o duty_n of_o worship_n that_o thou_o do_v perform_v nothing_o now_o god_n will_v be_v worship_v so_o by_o his_o creature_n as_o to_o be_v constant_o worship_v he_o will_v have_v those_o that_o do_v worship_n he_o to_o worship_v he_o always_o to_o worship_v he_o for_o ever_o and_o he_o will_v have_v this_o worship_n that_o we_o perform_v to_o he_o but_o to_o be_v the_o begin_n of_o that_o eternal_a worship_n that_o he_o shall_v have_v from_o we_o in_o heaven_n and_o so_o the_o saint_n do_v worship_n god_n now_o the_o worship_n which_o they_o perform_v it_o be_v but_o as_o the_o begin_n of_o that_o worship_n that_o hereafter_o in_o heaven_n they_o shall_v tender_v up_o to_o god_n though_o there_o may_v be_v some_o difference_n in_o it_o as_o there_o our_o prayer_n will_v be_v turn_v into_o praise_n and_o it_o will_v not_o be_v in_o such_o outward_a ordinance_n as_o now_o we_o worship_v god_n in_o there_o will_v be_v no_o preach_v nor_o sacrament_n yet_o notwithstanding_o the_o soul_n worship_n that_o be_v now_o will_v be_v in_o effect_v the_o same_o as_o it_o shall_v be_v in_o heaven_n god_n will_v have_v we_o so_o to_o worship_v he_o as_o to_o continue_v to_o worship_v he_o now_o i_o say_v â—nless_a his_o name_n bâ—_n sanctify_v in_o our_o worship_v of_o he_o we_o will_v certain_o fall_v off_o and_o the_o truth_n be_v this_o be_v the_o very_a ground_n of_o all_o apostasy_n in_o hypocrite_n some_o that_o have_v be_v very_o forward_o in_o the_o worship_v of_o god_n when_o they_o be_v young_a one_o and_o afterward_o they_o have_v fall_v off_o they_o be_v wont_n constant_o in_o their_o family_n and_o in_o secret_a in_o their_o chamber_n to_o be_v worship_v of_o god_n and_o they_o account_v it_o the_o very_a joy_n of_o their_o life_n for_o the_o present_a to_o be_v worship_v of_o god_n but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o they_o now_o as_o it_o be_v yea_o they_o be_v fall_v off_o it_o may_v be_v from_o their_o very_a profession_n of_o religion_n and_o turn_v loose_a and_o now_o to_o be_v in_o vain_a company_n to_o drink_v or_o play_v be_v better_a to_o they_o than_o any_o service_n of_o worship_n of_o god_n they_o prize_v more_o to_o be_v in_o company_n with_o their_o sport_n than_o to_o hear_v a_o sermon_n or_o to_o be_v in_o communion_n with_o the_o people_n of_o god_n in_o prayer_n heretofore_o they_o will_v not_o have_v change_v one_o short_a time_n of_o private_a communion_n with_o god_n for_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o pleasure_n and_o content_a in_o the_o world_n but_o now_o it_o be_v otherwise_o with_o they_o how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o these_o be_v apostatise_v thus_o from_o god_n sure_o this_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o it_o that_o they_o do_v not_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o holy_a duty_n at_o the_o most_o it_o be_v but_o a_o work_n of_o conscience_n that_o put_v they_o upon_o they_o and_o they_o have_v but_o some_o flash_n there_o be_v no_o real_a sanctification_n of_o their_o heart_n whereby_o they_o do_v sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n and_o upon_o this_o it_o be_v that_o they_o have_v leave_v off_o this_o i_o dare_v say_v that_o there_o be_v never_o any_o soul_n that_o do_v know_v what_o it_o be_v to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o worship_n that_o ever_o be_v weary_a of_o worship_v god_n it_o may_v be_v some_o of_o you_o may_v say_v we_o have_v hard_o that_o there_o be_v much_o require_v in_o sanctify_a god_n name_v in_o duty_n and_o that_o be_v the_o only_a way_n to_o weary_a the_o soul_n and_o to_o make_v it_o fall_v off_o oh_o no_o as_o we_o say_v the_o last_o day_n there_o be_v not_o any_o one_o thing_n that_o have_v be_v open_v for_o the_o sanctifi_n of_o god_n name_n in_o duty_n that_o any_o gracious_a heart_n can_v tell_v how_o to_o miss_v and_o the_o more_o we_o do_v sanctify_v his_o name_n the_o more_o we_o shall_v be_v in_o love_n with_o worship_n for_o it_o be_v from_o hence_o that_o those_o that_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o worship_n will_v hold_v out_o because_o they_o will_v find_v the_o sweetness_n of_o worship_n they_o will_v meet_v with_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n and_o so_o they_o come_v to_o be_v encourage_v in_o worship_n but_o as_o for_o other_o who_o do_v worship_n god_n in_o a_o formal_a way_n their_o worship_n will_v prove_v to_o be_v tedious_a to_o they_o for_o they_o perform_v the_o duty_n but_o do_v not_o find_v god_n in_o the_o duty_n in_o that_o spiritual_a way_n as_o the_o saint_n do_v if_o they_o think_v they_o meet_v with_o god_n it_o be_v but_o a_o imagination_n rather_o than_o any_o real_a meeting_n with_o he_o they_o do_v not_o find_v the_o influence_n of_o god_n in_o their_o soul_n in_o holy_a duty_n so_o as_o those_o do_v that_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o holy_a duty_n here_o than_o you_o see_v the_o reason_n why_o we_o be_v to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o holy_a duty_n now_o then_o for_o the_o application_n of_o all_o this_o 1._o if_o all_o this_o which_o you_o have_v be_v require_v of_o we_o for_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n hence_o we_o see_v how_o little_a cause_n we_o have_v to_o rest_v upon_o any_o duty_n of_o worship_n that_o we_o do_v perform_v certain_o the_o duty_n of_o worship_n that_o we_o perform_v be_v no_o such_o thing_n as_o be_v fit_a to_o be_v rest_v upon_o for_o life_n and_o for_o salvation_n and_o yet_o for_o the_o most_o part_n there_o be_v scarce_o any_o thing_n that_o people_n have_v to_o rest_v upon_o or_o to_o tender_v up_o to_o god_n for_o acceptation_n to_o eternal_a life_n but_o only_o their_o prayer_n and_o their_o come_n to_o hear_v and_o receive_v of_o the_o communion_n and_o such_o duty_n that_o they_o perform_v this_o be_v all_o they_o have_v to_o tender_v up_o for_o life_n and_o for_o salvation_n perhaps_o they_o may_v sometime_o speak_v of_o christ_n but_o the_o truth_n be_v that_o which_o their_o heart_n rest_v upon_o for_o acceptation_n to_o eternal_a life_n be_v this_o and_o be_v it_o but_o this_o it_o be_v a_o weak_a prop_n a_o rot_a reed_n that_o thou_o have_v to_o rest_v upon_o let_v the_o duty_n of_o worship_n be_v perform_v never_o so_o well_o suppose_v we_o do_v sanctify_v god_n name_n to_o the_o uttermost_a that_o be_v possible_a for_o any_o creature_n to_o do_v in_o this_o world_n yet_o such_o duty_n be_v not_o to_o be_v rest_v upon_o abraham_n isaac_n and_o jacob_n and_o the_o apostle_n the_o most_o holy_a man_n that_o ever_o do_v preform_v duty_n in_o the_o most_o holy_a manner_n yet_o woe_n to_o they_o if_o they_o have_v nothing_o to_o rest_v upon_o but_o their_o duty_n consider_v therefore_o of_o this_o that_o what_o thou_o must_v rest_v upon_o for_o acceptation_n to_o eternal_a life_n it_o must_v be_v that_o which_o must_v have_v so_o much_o worth_n in_o it_o as_o must_v satisfy_v for_o all_o thy_o sin_n that_o former_o thou_o have_v commit_v yea_o and_o for_o all_o the_o sin_n that_o ever_o thou_o shall_v commit_v now_o i_o appeal_v unto_o any_o one_o conscience_n be_v that_o which_o thou_o perform_v be_v prayer_n or_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n or_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n such_o a_o work_n as_o in_o thy_o conscience_n thou_o can_v think_v it_o have_v so_o much_o worth_n in_o it_o as_o to_o satisfy_v god_n for_o all_o the_o sin_n that_o ever_o thou_o
way_n or_o other_o appear_v to_o be_v against_o i_o in_o such_o duty_n that_o i_o tender_v up_o unto_o he_o now_o you_o will_v say_v how_o do_v god_n appear_v that_o he_o do_v not_o accept_v of_o they_o he_o will_v appear_v in_o these_o three_o thing_n 1._o first_o by_o blast_v those_o that_o do_v worship_n he_o thus_o in_o a_o formal_a way_n it_o shall_v at_o first_o be_v secret_a but_o afterward_o it_o will_v appear_v more_o apparent_o and_o we_o see_v it_o by_o experience_n that_o such_o as_o have_v be_v professor_n of_o religion_n and_o worship_n god_n in_o hypocrisy_n and_o in_o formality_n they_o have_v be_v blast_v in_o their_o part_n and_o common_a gift_n the_o judgement_n of_o god_n upon_o nadab_n and_o abihu_n that_o do_v not_o sanctify_v god_n name_n it_o be_v secret_a at_o first_o it_o strike_v they_o dead_a and_o though_o by_o fire_n yet_o if_o you_o read_v the_o story_n you_o shall_v find_v that_o their_o clothes_n be_v not_o burn_v and_o yet_o they_o be_v burn_v in_o their_o body_n so_o the_o lord_n sometime_o do_v blast_v man_n inward_o in_o their_o spirit_n in_o their_o soul_n in_o their_o part_n in_o their_o common_a gift_n he_o blast_v they_o i_o say_v inward_o though_o it_o do_v not_o appear_v outward_o yet_o at_o length_n it_o will_v appear_v before_o man_n that_o they_o be_v blast_v and_o in_o these_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o lord_n do_v come_v with_o spiritual_a judgement_n rather_o than_o with_o outward_a temporal_a judgement_n in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law_n those_o that_o do_v not_o sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n the_o lord_n do_v appear_v by_o some_o external_a and_o visible_a way_n upon_o their_o body_n but_o now_o in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n there_o god_n come_v with_o more_o spiritual_a judgement_n upon_o man_n soul_n and_o those_o be_v the_o most_o terrible_a judgement_n we_o have_v a_o notable_a scripture_n for_o this_o in_o isa_n 29._o 13._o how_o god_n do_v blast_v those_o that_o do_v not_o sanctify_v his_o name_n in_o holy_a duty_n wherefore_o the_o lord_n say_v forasmuch_o as_o this_o people_n draw_v near_o i_o with_o their_o mouth_n and_o with_o their_o lip_n do_v honour_n i_o but_o have_v remove_v their_o heart_n far_o from_o i_o and_o their_o fear_n towards_o i_o be_v teach_v by_o the_o precept_n of_o man_n mark_v what_o follow_v therefore_o behold_v i_o will_v proceed_v to_o do_v a_o marvellous_a work_n among_o this_o people_n even_o a_o marvellous_a work_n and_o a_o wonder_n for_o the_o wisdom_n of_o their_o wise_a man_n shall_v perish_v and_o the_o understanding_n of_o their_o prudent_a man_n shall_v be_v hide_v what_o do_v they_o come_v and_o draw_v near_o i_o with_o their_o lip_n and_o their_o heart_n be_v far_o from_o i_o and_o do_v they_o worship_v i_o in_o a_o formal_a way_n i_o will_v take_v away_o the_o wisdom_n from_o the_o wise_a and_o the_o understanding_n from_o the_o prudent_a and_o that_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o so_o many_o great_a scholar_n be_v blast_v in_o their_o very_a part_n because_o they_o will_v worship_v god_n according_a to_o the_o precept_n of_o man_n in_o a_o formal_a way_n and_o so_o all_o hypocrite_n and_o formal_a worshipper_n the_o lord_n do_v blast_v they_o in_o one_o way_n or_o other_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n upon_o the_o spirit_n of_o man_n be_v sometime_o in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law_n but_o in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n there_o we_o find_v general_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n to_o be_v more_o spiritual_a upon_o the_o heart_n and_o conscience_n of_o man_n we_o find_v it_o by_o experience_n god_n do_v discover_v that_o he_o do_v not_o accept_v of_o such_o as_o those_o be_v and_o therefore_o when_o you_o see_v any_o that_o have_v make_v profession_n of_o religion_n that_o have_v excellent_a part_n at_o first_o many_o common_a gift_n and_o now_o be_v as_o we_o say_v no_o body_n remember_v this_o text_n that_o god_n will_v be_v sanctify_v in_o those_o that_o come_v nigh_o he_o second_o the_o lord_n do_v manifest_a that_o he_o will_v be_v sanctify_v in_o those_o that_o draw_v nigh_o he_o by_o awake_v their_o conscience_n many_o time_n upon_o their_o sick_a bed_n and_o death_n bed_n the_o lord_n do_v force_v they_o to_o give_v glory_n to_o he_o and_o there_o to_o acknowledge_v that_o they_o do_v not_o worship_n god_n in_o uprightness_n but_o in_o formality_n and_o now_o they_o be_v in_o horror_n of_o conscience_n and_o cry_v out_o in_o the_o anguish_n of_o their_o soul_n upon_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o dreadful_a wrath_n of_o god_n that_o be_v upon_o they_o take_v heed_n for_o the_o lord_n sake_n of_o this_o thing_n when_o you_o be_v perform_v of_o the_o duty_n of_o worship_n do_v not_o rest_v in_o the_o outward_a duty_n for_o they_o will_v never_o comfort_v you_o upon_o your_o sick_a and_o death_n bed_n you_o may_v perhaps_o put_v off_o your_o conscience_n a_o little_a for_o the_o present_a but_o when_o you_o come_v upon_o your_o sick_a bed_n there_o will_v be_v no_o comfort_n unto_o you_o and_o then_o you_o will_v be_v force_v to_o say_v well_o all_o this_o while_n i_o have_v but_o take_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o vain_a and_o now_o god_n have_v reject_v i_o and_o all_o my_o service_n and_o you_o will_v then_o speak_v to_o those_o that_o come_v about_o your_o bed_n side_n and_o bid_v they_o take_v warning_n by_o you_o take_v heed_n that_o when_o you_o worship_n god_n you_o worship_v he_o to_o purpose_n i_o have_v spend_v time_n in_o prayer_n and_o hear_v but_o for_o want_v of_o this_o i_o find_v i_o have_v no_o comfort_n at_o all_o but_o the_o lord_n appear_v to_o be_v terrible_a to_o my_o soul_n and_o come_v out_o against_o i_o as_o a_o enemy_n i_o say_v now_o god_n name_n be_v sanctify_v whatever_o become_v of_o thou_o he_o will_v force_v glory_n from_o thou_o one_o way_n or_o other_o and_o it_o may_v be_v even_o here_o in_o this_o time_n of_o thy_o life_n but_o however_o at_o the_o great_a day_n when_o the_o secret_n of_o all_o heart_n must_v be_v disclose_v before_o man_n and_o angle_n than_o the_o lord_n will_v appear_v to_o be_v a_o holy_a god_n by_o reject_v all_o such_o service_n that_o thou_o do_v tender_v up_o to_o he_o and_o it_o will_v then_o be_v a_o great_a part_n of_o the_o work_n of_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n for_o god_n to_o be_v sanctify_v in_o those_o that_o do_v worship_v he_o by_o declare_v before_o man_n and_o angel_n how_o do_v he_o reject_v such_o formal_a and_o hypocritical_a worship_n that_o they_o do_v tender_a up_o unto_o he_o oh_o that_o god_n will_v strike_v this_o upon_o your_o heart_n that_o it_o may_v abide_v upon_o you_o every_o time_n you_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o to_o think_v thus_o let_v i_o look_v to_o it_o to_o sanctify_v his_o name_n now_o for_o i_o hear_v that_o god_n will_v sanctify_v it_o himself_o if_o i_o do_v not_o do_v it_o but_o then_o on_o the_o other_o side_n if_o so_o be_v that_o thou_o make_v conscience_n of_o sanctify_a god_n name_v in_o duty_n than_o he_o will_v sanctify_v his_o name_n in_o a_o way_n of_o mercy_n that_o be_v he_o will_v manifest_v how_o he_o do_v accept_v of_o the_o least_o degree_n of_o holiness_n though_o there_o be_v much_o mixture_n god_n have_v a_o way_n to_o take_v away_o the_o mixture_n by_o the_o blood_n of_o his_o son_n and_o then_o to_o accept_v of_o any_o holiness_n he_o see_v in_o thou_o he_o will_v sanctify_v his_o name_n by_o meeting_n with_o thou_o and_o reveal_v his_o glory_n to_o thou_o when_o thou_o be_v worship_v of_o he_o there_o be_v a_o excellent_a scripture_n for_o this_o exod._n 29._o 43._o there_o i_o will_v meet_v with_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n and_o the_o tabernacle_n shall_v be_v sanctify_v by_o my_o glory_n thou_o that_o have_v a_o gracious_a heart_n and_o be_v worship_v of_o god_n in_o sincerity_n thou_o be_v as_o a_o tabernacle_n of_o god_n and_o god_n have_v his_o service_n and_o worship_n from_o thou_o thou_o be_v as_o the_o temple_n of_o god_n and_o there_o will_v i_o meet_v with_o thou_o say_v god_n and_o i_o will_v sanctify_v my_o tabernacle_n by_o my_o glory_n god_n will_v sanctify_v thy_o heart_n by_o his_o glory_n again_o all_o thing_n be_v sanctify_v unto_o they_o as_o on_o the_o other_o side_n those_o that_o do_v not_o sanctify_v god_n name_n all_o thing_n be_v curse_v to_o they_o if_o thou_o do_v not_o make_v conscience_n of_o sanctify_a god_n name_v in_o duty_n god_n care_v not_o to_o sanctify_v any_o thing_n for_o thy_o good_a but_o now_o those_o that_o make_v conscience_n of_o sanctify_a god_n and_o prayer_n other_o thing_n come_v under_o worship_n but_o yet_o these_o be_v the_o three_o chief_a duty_n of_o worship_n and_o i_o intend_v to_o speak_v to_o all_o these_o three_o and_o to_o show_v how_o we_o shall_v sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o draw_v nigh_o unto_o he_o in_o the_o word_n sacrament_n and_o prayer_n we_o may_v choose_v several_a text_n for_o all_o these_o but_o they_o fall_v full_a within_o the_o general_n and_o therefore_o it_o shall_v be_v sufficient_a for_o to_o ground_v the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n in_o these_o duty_n of_o worship_n upon_o this_o luke_n 8._o 18._o take_v heed_n therefore_o how_o you_o hear_v it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n that_o be_v good_a and_o no_o question_n but_o god_n be_v please_v with_o the_o willingness_n of_o people_n to_o come_v to_o hear_v his_o word_n but_o you_o must_v not_o rest_v bare_o in_o hear_v but_o take_v heed_n how_o you_o hear_v now_o this_o be_v a_o point_n of_o great_a consequence_n and_o i_o hope_v it_o may_v do_v good_a to_o help_v to_o make_v many_o sermon_n to_o be_v profitable_a to_o you_o and_o the_o point_n i_o hope_v be_v seasonable_a and_o will_v be_v very_o suitable_a unto_o you_o for_o those_o that_o come_v to_o hear_v so_o soon_o in_o a_o morning_n and_o be_v willing_a even_o in_o hard_a weather_n to_o come_v out_o of_o their_o bed_n they_o give_v some_o good_a testimony_n that_o they_o do_v desire_n to_o honour_n god_n in_o their_o hear_n and_o to_o get_v good_a by_o their_o hear_n and_o it_o be_v pity_n that_o labour_n and_o pain_n shall_v be_v bestow_v and_o no_o profit_n but_o hurt_v rather_o get_v by_o it_o which_o god_n forbid_v therefore_o now_o i_o be_o to_o speak_v to_o a_o point_n that_o may_v help_v you_o so_o to_o hear_v as_o may_v recompense_v all_o your_o labour_n and_o pain_n in_o hear_v in_o preach_v to_o those_o that_o come_v to_o hear_v so_o that_o they_o may_v get_v good_a and_o benefit_n by_o it_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o encouragement_n than_o to_o such_o as_o come_v in_o a_o formal_a way_n because_o they_o use_v to_o come_v therefore_o this_o point_n be_v a_o great_a point_n i_o shall_v open_v it_o somewhat_o large_o and_o cast_v into_o this_o method_n first_o i_o shall_v show_v you_o that_o the_o hear_n of_o god_n word_n be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n for_o otherwise_o i_o can_v not_o ground_v it_o upon_o my_o text_n second_o i_o shall_v show_v you_o how_o we_o be_v to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o the_o hear_n of_o his_o word_n either_o in_o regard_n of_o preparation_n unto_o it_o or_o our_o behaviour_n in_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n three_o why_o it_o be_v that_o god_n will_v be_v sanctify_v in_o this_o ordinance_n of_o he_o four_o how_o god_n will_v sanctify_v himself_o in_o such_o as_o do_v not_o sanctify_v his_o name_n in_o the_o hear_n of_o his_o word_n five_o how_o god_n will_v sanctify_v his_o name_n in_o way_n of_o mercy_n to_o those_o that_o be_v careful_a to_o sanctify_v his_o name_n in_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n these_o be_v the_o five_o principal_a thing_n that_o concern_v this_o argument_n for_o the_o first_o that_o the_o hear_n of_o god_n word_n it_o be_v a_o part_n of_o god_n worship_n you_o hear_v in_o the_o open_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n in_o the_o general_n what_o it_o be_v i_o tell_v you_o it_o be_v a_o tender_v up_o of_o the_o creature_n homage_n to_o god_n as_o testimony_n of_o the_o respect_n that_o the_o creature_n do_v owe_v to_o god_n now_o if_o that_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o worship_n certain_o the_o hear_n of_o god_n word_n it_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n for_o in_o the_o hear_n of_o god_n word_n we_o first_o do_v profess_v our_o dependence_n upon_o god_n for_o the_o know_v of_o his_o mind_n and_o the_o way_n to_o eternal_a life_n every_o time_n we_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n if_o we_o know_v what_o we_o do_v we_o do_v thus_o much_o we_o do_v profess_v that_o we_o do_v depend_v upon_o the_o lord_n god_n for_o the_o know_v of_o his_o mind_n and_o the_o way_n and_o rule_n to_o eternal_a life_n we_o do_v as_o much_o as_o if_o we_o shall_v say_v lord_n of_o ourselves_o we_o neither_o know_v thou_o nor_o the_o way_n and_o mean_n how_o we_o shall_v come_v to_o be_v save_v and_o therefore_o that_o we_o may_v testify_v our_o dependence_n upon_o thou_o for_o this_o thing_n we_o here_o present_v ourselves_o before_o thou_o now_o this_o be_v a_o testimony_n of_o the_o high_a respect_n we_o owe_v to_o god_n second_o the_o hear_n of_o god_n word_n be_v a_o part_n of_o his_o worship_n because_o in_o it_o we_o come_v to_o wait_v upon_o god_n in_o the_o way_n of_o a_o ordinance_n to_o have_v that_o good_a convey_v to_o we_o by_o way_n of_o a_o ordinance_n beyond_o what_o the_o thing_n in_o itself_o
any_o just_a occasion_n to_o other_o to_o say_v be_v this_o to_o hear_v sermon_n do_v you_o get_v nothing_o else_o but_o this_o by_o hear_v sermon_n if_o you_o shall_v open_v the_o mouth_n of_o man_n to_o say_v so_o of_o you_o the_o word_n of_o god_n as_o much_o as_o lie_v in_o you_o will_v be_v disgrace_v by_o you_o you_o shall_v rather_o think_v thus_o it_o be_v better_o for_o i_o that_o i_o shall_v die_v and_o that_o i_o be_v under_o the_o ground_n and_o rot_v there_o than_o that_o the_o word_n of_o god_n shall_v ever_o be_v disgrace_v by_o i_o let_v i_o hold_v forth_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o word_n the_o word_n be_v that_o which_o have_v do_v good_a to_o my_o soul_n the_o word_n be_v that_o which_o i_o will_v not_o for_o ten_o thousand_o world_n but_o have_v hear_v it_o and_o shall_v i_o disgrace_v this_o word_n shall_v i_o give_v any_o occasion_n that_o this_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n shall_v be_v speak_v ill_o of_o by_o reason_n of_o i_o o_o god_n forbid_v therefore_o in_o heaven_n that_o sin_n will_v be_v great_a than_o sin_n commit_v here_o therefore_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o angel_n when_o they_o be_v in_o god_n presence_n in_o a_o more_o special_a manner_n be_v the_o great_a the_o name_n of_o god_n be_v in_o any_o thing_n the_o great_a will_v be_v the_o evil_a if_o we_o do_v not_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o it_o now_o there_o be_v very_o much_o of_o god_n in_o his_o word_n more_o of_o god_n there_o than_o in_o all_o the_o work_n of_o creation_n and_o providence_n in_o ps_n 138._o 2_o thou_o have_v magnify_v thy_o word_n above_o all_o thy_o name_n there_o be_v therefore_o so_o much_o of_o god_n in_o his_o word_n we_o must_v sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o it_o 2._o second_o god_n have_v appoint_v his_o word_n to_o be_v the_o great_a ordinance_n to_o convey_v the_o special_a mercy_n that_o he_o intend_v for_o the_o good_a of_o his_o people_n that_o we_o speak_v to_o before_o in_o the_o general_n in_o show_v how_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n be_v as_o a_o channel_n for_o the_o conveyance_n of_o special_a good_a to_o the_o saint_n but_o none_o more_o than_o the_o word_n that_o be_v the_o ordinance_n to_o convey_v the_o first_o grace_n to_o those_o that_o belong_v to_o god_n election_n the_o sacrament_n be_v for_o strengthen_v and_o therefore_o there_o be_v rather_o more_o in_o the_o word_n than_o in_o the_o sacrament_n and_o yet_o every_o one_o think_v in_o conscience_n that_o he_o be_v bind_v to_o come_v careful_o to_o the_o sacrament_n and_o to_o look_v to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n there_o it_o be_v a_o easy_a matter_n to_o convince_v man_n and_o woman_n that_o they_o be_v bind_v to_o sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n when_o they_o come_v to_o receive_v the_o holy_a communion_n than_o for_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n they_o think_v not_o so_o much_o of_o that_o but_o certain_o the_o word_n be_v appoint_v to_o be_v a_o ordinance_n of_o convey_v more_o blessing_n than_o the_o sacrament_n because_o it_o be_v appoint_v to_o convey_v the_o first_o grace_n and_o to_o convey_v strength_n of_o grace_n as_o well_o as_o the_o sacrament_n now_o be_v appoint_v to_o convey_v such_o great_a thing_n to_o the_o soul_n of_o the_o elect_a both_o the_o first_o grace_n and_o strengthen_n of_o grace_n and_o comfort_n and_o assistance_n thereof_o the_o lord_n expect_v to_o have_v his_o name_n santifiy_v in_o it_o 3._o three_o the_o name_n of_o god_n must_v be_v sanctiff_v in_o the_o word_n because_o the_o word_n be_v very_o quick_a and_o lively_a it_o work_v man_n or_o woman_n to_o life_n or_o death_n to_o salvation_n or_o damnation_n in_o heb._n 4._o 12._o the_o word_n of_o god_n quick_a and_o powerful_a and_o sharp_a than_o any_o two_o edge_a sword_n pierce_v even_o to_o the_o devide_v a_o sunder_o of_o soul_n and_o spirit_n etc._n etc._n it_o be_v very_o quick_a of_o operation_n the_o text_n say_v that_o be_v when_o god_n have_v to_o deal_v with_o man_n by_o his_o word_n he_o will_v not_o stand_v dally_v and_o trifle_v with_o they_o but_o he_o be_v very_o quick_a with_o they_o either_o to_o bring_v there_o soul_n to_o life_n or_o to_o cast_v they_o away_o the_o time_n of_o man_n ignorance_n god_n wink_v at_o but_o now_o he_o call_v all_o man_n to_o repent_v let_v they_o look_v to_o it_o now_o god_n do_v forbear_v in_o the_o time_n of_o ignorance_n but_o he_o will_v not_o forbear_v so_o when_o the_o word_n come_v now_o be_v the_o axe_n lay_v to_o the_o root_n of_o the_o tree_n and_o when_o be_v that_o when_o john_n baptist_n come_v to_o preach_v repentance_n because_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n be_v at_o hand_n though_o the_o tree_n be_v barren_a before_o and_o do_v not_o bring_v forth_o good_a sruit_n yet_o it_o may_v stand_v still_o and_o not_o be_v cut_v down_o but_o when_o the_o powerful_a ministration_n of_o the_o world_n come_v than_o the_o axe_n be_v lay_v to_o the_o root_n of_o the_o tree_n either_o now_o come_v in_o and_o be_v save_v or_o resist_v the_o word_n and_o perish_v and_o therefore_o that_o be_v very_o observable_a when_o christ_n send_v out_o his_o disciple_n to_o preach_v in_o mark_n 16._o 15_o 16._o say_v he_o go_v you_o into_o all_o the_o world_n and_o preach_v the_o gospel_n to_o every_o creature_n and_o he_o that_o believe_v and_o be_v baptise_a shall_v be_v save_v but_o he_o that_o believe_v not_o shall_v be_v not_o they_o shall_v be_v damn_v and_o there_o be_v a_o end_n of_o they_o so_o that_o i_o say_v we_o have_v need_v to_o look_v to_o it_o that_o we_o sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o his_o word_n upon_o these_o three_o ground_n because_o there_o be_v so_o much_o of_o god_n in_o his_o word_n because_o he_o have_v appoint_v it_o to_o convey_v the_o great_a mercy_n to_o his_o saint_n and_o because_o god_n be_v very_o quick_a in_o his_o word_n one_o way_n or_o other_o we_o shall_v now_o proceed_v to_o the_o application_n of_o this_o point_n and_o first_o by_o way_n of_o reprehension_n to_o all_o those_o that_o do_v not_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o herein_o we_o shall_v show_v their_o fearful_a condition_n and_o how_o god_n will_v sanctify_v his_o name_n upon_o they_o in_o way_n of_o judgement_n and_o then_o when_o we_o come_v to_o the_o use_n of_o exhortation_n to_o exhort_v you_o to_o sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n there_o we_o shall_v show_v you_o likewise_o how_o god_n will_v sanctify_v his_o name_n in_o way_n of_o mercy_n upon_o those_o that_o do_v sanctify_v he_o in_o way_n of_o obedience_n in_o hear_v of_o his_o word_n 1._o for_o the_o first_o certain_o if_o that_o be_v to_o sanctsfie_v the_o name_n of_o god_n that_o we_o have_v speak_v of_o god_n name_v be_v but_o very_o little_a sanctify_a by_o people_n that_o do_v come_v to_o hear_v his_o word_n and_o we_o have_v no_o cause_n to_o wonder_v that_o there_o be_v so_o little_a good_a get_v by_o the_o word_n because_o there_o be_v so_o few_o that_o make_v conscience_n to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o here_v it_o some_o there_o be_v that_o be_v so_o far_o from_o sanctify_a god_n name_v in_o it_o as_o they_o altogether_o neglect_v it_o and_o make_v it_o a_o matter_n of_o nothing_o whether_o they_o come_v to_o hear_v it_o
any_o certain_a sign_n of_o reprobation_n therefore_o i_o can_v say_v of_o any_o man_n he_o have_v now_o such_o a_o mark_n upon_o he_o as_o do_v evident_o prove_v that_o he_o be_v a_o reprobate_n we_o can_v tell_v that_o because_o we_o know_v not_o what_o god_n may_v do_v afterward_o but_o we_o may_v say_v this_o that_o it_o be_v as_o dreadful_a a_o sign_n as_o any_o there_o be_v not_o any_o more_o dreadful_a sign_n than_o these_o two_o first_o for_o a_o man_n to_o be_v suffer_v to_o prosper_v in_o a_o sinful_a course_n for_o god_n to_o let_v man_n go_v on_o and_o have_v their_o heart_n desire_v they_o shall_v be_v by_o god_n providence_n so_o dispose_v of_o as_o to_o live_v under_o a_o faithful_a and_o powerful_a ministry_n and_o that_o it_o shall_v not_o work_v upon_o they_o these_o be_v the_o two_o black_a sign_n of_o reprobation_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v a_o most_o dreadful_a thing_n to_o sit_v under_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n and_o not_o to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o it_o 6._o in_o the_o next_o place_n sure_o there_o can_v be_v nothing_o sanctify_v to_o thou_o who_o do_v not_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o his_o word_n the_o scripture_n say_v that_o every_o that_o fall_v upon_o the_o ground_n for_o the_o earth_n that_o drink_v in_o the_o rain_n that_o come_v oft_o upon_o it_o and_o bring_v forth_o herb_n meet_v for_o they_o by_o who_o it_o be_v dress_v receive_v blessing_n from_o god_n but_o say_v he_o that_o which_o bear_v thorn_n and_o briar_n be_v reject_v and_o be_v nigh_o unto_o curse_v who_o end_n be_v to_o be_v burn_v the_o meaning_n be_v this_o plain_o the_o rain_n here_o be_v the_o word_n &_o the_o good_a hearer_n they_o be_v like_o the_o ground_n that_o receive_v the_o rain_n and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n and_o receive_v a_o blessing_n but_o now_o ill_a hearer_n that_o do_v not_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o his_o word_n they_o be_v like_o ground_n that_o receive_v the_o rain_n as_o much_o as_o the_o other_o hear_v as_o many_o sermon_n as_o the_o other_o but_o they_o bring_v forth_o nothing_o but_o thorn_n and_o briar_n and_o mark_v what_o a_o dreadful_a expression_n be_v against_o they_o first_o it_o be_v reject_v second_o it_o be_v nigh_o to_o curse_v three_o who_o end_n be_v to_o be_v burn_v thou_o rejecte_v the_o word_n do_v thou_o the_o lord_n reject_v thy_o soul_n if_o thou_o have_v no_o need_n of_o the_o be_v between_o god_n and_o your_o soul_n can_v thou_o say_v the_o lord_n be_v please_v to_o reveal_v himself_o to_o i_o to_o make_v know_v to_o i_o my_o wretched_a condition_n and_o the_o way_n of_o grace_n and_o salvation_n and_o show_v i_o that_o upon_o my_o come_n in_o to_o receive_v his_o son_n he_o will_v be_v merciful_a to_o i_o and_o pardon_v my_o sin_n and_o i_o have_v find_v the_o side_n that_o if_o they_o do_v what_o they_o can_v to_o keep_v they_o away_o and_o yet_o if_o they_o shall_v be_v suffer_v to_o come_v they_o may_v not_o come_v to_o partake_v of_o those_o thing_n now_o it_o be_v very_o useful_a for_o we_o to_o know_v what_o we_o shall_v do_v in_o this_o case_n sermon_n xii_o leviticus_n 10._o 3._o i_o will_v be_v sanctify_v in_o they_o that_o come_v nigh_o i_o i_o shall_v add_v something_o to_o one_o particular_a that_o i_o have_v the_o last_o day_n concern_v peoples_n withdraw_v from_o such_o a_o congregation_n where_o they_o can_v not_o receive_v all_o bind_v to_o go_v where_o i_o may_v have_v the_o whole_a sacrament_n so_o if_o a_o church_n will_v give_v i_o some_o one_o ordinance_n and_o not_o another_o i_o confess_v so_o long_o as_o there_o be_v hope_n that_o i_o may_v enjoy_v it_o and_o that_o they_o be_v in_o a_o way_n for_o enjoyment_n i_o think_v there_o shall_v be_v a_o great_a forbearance_n to_o a_o church_n as_o well_o as_o to_o a_o particular_a person_n as_o i_o must_v not_o withdraw_v from_o a_o particular_a man_n where_o there_o be_v hope_n still_o of_o his_o reformation_n that_o there_o may_v come_v good_a of_o my_o forbearance_n so_o towards_o a_o church_n much_o more_o but_o i_o say_v if_o i_o can_v enjoy_v neither_o do_v there_o appear_v any_o hope_n of_o enjoyment_n of_o all_o ordinance_n certain_o it_o be_v but_o a_o cruelty_n to_o force_v man_n to_o stay_v there_o when_o as_o otherwhere_o they_o may_v enjoy_v all_o ordinance_n for_o the_o good_a of_o their_o soul_n and_o this_o can_v be_v schism_n thus_o to_o do_v as_o now_o if_o this_o schism_n suppose_v a_o man_n be_v in_o a_o place_n and_o join_v in_o such_o a_o communion_n for_o his_o outward_a benefit_n he_o may_v remove_v his_o dwell_n from_o one_o place_n to_o another_o if_o he_o can_v have_v better_a trade_n in_o another_o place_n than_o certain_o if_o he_o may_v have_v more_o ordinance_n for_o the_o edification_n of_o his_o soul_n he_o may_v as_o well_o remove_v from_o one_o to_o another_o as_o he_o may_v remove_v if_o his_o trade_n be_v better_a in_o one_o place_n than_o another_o christ_n will_v have_v all_o his_o people_n look_v to_o the_o edification_n of_o their_o soul_n and_o shall_v i_o account_v that_o schism_n when_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n mere_o out_o of_o tenderness_n and_o a_o desire_n to_o enjoy_v jesus_n christ_n in_o all_o his_o ordinance_n for_o the_o benefit_n of_o there_o soul_n they_o find_v such_o want_n to_o there_o soul_n of_o all_o ordinance_n that_o though_o they_o may_v have_v some_o in_o one_o place_n yet_o if_o they_o can_v have_v all_o their_o soul_n do_v not_o so_o thrive_v now_o if_o this_o be_v all_o the_o end_n why_o they_o remove_v that_o they_o may_v have_v more_o brand_v no_o that_n schism_n when_o there_o be_v a_o violent_a rend_n out_o of_o malice_n for_o the_o want_n of_o love_n for_o as_o a_o postasie_n be_v a_o rend_n from_o the_o head_n so_o schism_n from_o the_o body_n that_o be_v when_o it_o be_v out_o of_o a_o evil_a spirit_n from_o envy_n or_o from_o malice_n from_o want_n of_o love_n or_o from_o any_o base_a sinister_a end_n and_o upon_o no_o just_a ground_n but_o now_o when_o it_o be_v mere_o out_o of_o love_n to_o jesus_n christ_n that_o i_o may_v have_v more_o edification_n to_o my_o soul_n and_o still_o i_o retain_v love_n to_o the_o saint_n that_o be_v there_o as_o they_o be_v in_o communion_n and_o so_o far_o as_o they_o have_v any_o thing_n good_a among_o they_o i_o hold_v communion_n with_o they_o in_o that_o only_o i_o desire_v in_o humility_n and_o in_o meekness_n that_o i_o may_v be_v in_o such_o a_o place_n where_o my_o soul_n may_v be_v most_o edify_v where_o i_o may_v enjoy_v all_o those_o ordinance_n that_o christ_n have_v appoint_v for_o his_o church_n certain_o that_o soul_n that_o can_v give_v this_o account_n to_o jesus_n christ_n for_o go_v from_o one_o place_n to_o another_o will_v be_v free_v by_o
