from_o wicked_a company_n and_o cry_v out_o against_o they_o as_o the_o seducer_n of_o his_o soul_n eight_o he_o set_v up_o a_o kind_n of_o reformation_n in_o his_o family_n which_o before_o have_v perhaps_o no_o face_n of_o religion_n in_o it_o but_o now_o all_o notorious_a profaneness_n be_v banish_v and_o the_o neglect_n of_o god_n worship_n be_v redress_v and_o prayer_n be_v set_v up_o in_o the_o family_n morning_n and_o evening_n and_o the_o read_n of_o the_o scripture_n etc._n etc._n object_n sure_o will_v some_o man_n say_v this_o man_n heart_n be_v change_v and_o all_o this_o can_v never_o be_v unless_o the_o heart_n be_v renew_v by_o grace_n and_o some_o of_o we_o never_o go_v so_o far_o as_o this_o can_v you_o show_v any_o difference_n betwixt_o those_o effect_n of_o a_o awaken_v and_o trouble_v conscience_n and_o those_o flow_n from_o renew_v grace_n sol._n these_o â—ffects_n i_o confess_v be_v high_a and_o with_o they_o for_o the_o present_a caâ—se_n difference_n betwixt_o these_o and_o renew_v grace_n in_o the_o caâ—se_n many_o do_v deceive_v themselves_o look_v on_o they_o as_o the_o fruit_n of_o renew_v grace_n but_o there_o be_v manifest_a difference_n between_o they_o first_o in_o the_o cause_n or_o ground_n when_o they_o come_v only_o from_o a_o awaken_v and_o trouble_v conscience_n the_o cause_n of_o they_o be_v only_o the_o sense_n of_o god_n dreadful_a wrath_n which_o be_v such_o a_o unsufferable_a evil_n that_o it_o break_v and_o tear_v the_o sense_n the_o sinner_n will_v in_o that_o condition_n do_v any_o thing_n and_o comply_v with_o any_o course_n how_o conformable_a be_v pharaoh_n when_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n be_v heavy_a upon_o he_o and_o unto_o what_o confession_n and_o restitution_n and_o repentance_n be_v judas_n wrought_v when_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n fall_v upon_o his_o conscience_n but_o now_o when_o the_o heart_n be_v renew_v by_o grace_n the_o man_n be_v sensible_a of_o his_o sin_v and_o mourn_v for_o his_o sin_n and_o put_v away_o his_o sin_n and_o set_v up_o a_o course_n of_o new_a obedience_n not_o from_o the_o mere_a sense_n of_o wrath_n but_o from_o another_o cause_n even_o from_o a_o love_n to_o god_n and_o a_o apprehension_n of_o god_n love_n to_o he_o which_o raise_v in_o he_o a_o loathe_n of_o all_o which_o god_n loathe_v and_o a_o like_n of_o all_o that_o god_n like_v and_o a_o desire_n in_o all_o thing_n to_o walk_v in_o all_o well-pleasing_a before_o the_o lord_n second_o in_o the_o secret_a principle_n which_o set_v the_o sinner_n thus_o a-work_o in_o the_o principle_n in_o the_o principle_n trouble_a sinner_n it_o be_v self-love_n a_o poor_a wretch_n now_o plain_o see_v that_o he_o must_v be_v damn_v if_o he_o do_v not_o leave_v and_o change_v his_o sinful_a course_n and_o if_o he_o slight_v christ_n and_o holy_a duty_n as_o former_o he_o have_v do_v there_o be_v in_o he_o in_o this_o condition_n a_o horrible_a fear_n of_o death_n and_o of_o god_n eternal_a vengeance_n and_o he_o will_v not_o fall_v into_o the_o consuine_a fire_n no_o creature_n like_v its_o own_o destruction_n much_o less_o a_o eternal_a damnation_n and_o therefore_o this_o trouble_a sinner_n will_v set_v upon_o duty_n and_o
will_v make_v much_o moan_n for_o christ_n and_o all_o that_o move_v he_o unto_o this_o be_v his_o self-love_n he_o love_v his_o life_n and_o he_o love_v his_o safety_n but_o yet_o all_o this_o while_n do_v not_o love_n christ_n for_o christ_n nor_o holy_a duty_n as_o way_n to_o glorify_v god_n but_o where_o renew_v grace_n be_v in_o a_o man_n the_o principle_n which_o set_v he_o a_o work_n for_o christ_n be_v faith_n and_o which_o draw_v he_o out_o be_v a_o love_n of_o godliness_n and_o a_o love_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n etc._n etc._n three_o in_o the_o end_n or_o aim_n which_o in_o work_v do_v upon_o the_o sole_a account_n of_o end_n in_o the_o end_n a_o trouble_v conscience_n be_v only_a self-ease_n and_o quietness_n and_o calmness_n of_o conscience_n as_o the_o distemper_n lie_v only_o in_o trouble_n so_o the_o remedy_n lie_v only_o in_o ease_n oh_o if_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v off_o in_o the_o feel_n of_o it_o but_o the_o poor_a wretch_n do_v not_o think_v of_o remove_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n in_o the_o state_n of_o it_o and_o o_o if_o the_o painful_a terror_n of_o conscience_n be_v off_o that_o and_o this_o he_o aim_v at_o direct_o if_o he_o think_v of_o christ_n if_o he_o pray_v if_o he_o hear_v if_o he_o confer_v if_o he_o reform_v all_o tend_v to_o this_o viz._n the_o remove_n of_o sensible_a evil_n of_o penal_a evil_n of_o terror_n and_o trouble_n and_o that_o his_o conscience_n may_v be_v quiet_a and_o hold_v its_o peace_n and_o speak_v bitter_o no_o more_o unto_o he_o but_o where_o the_o heart_n be_v renew_v by_o grace_n the_o conscience_n shall_v trouble_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o that_o only_a nor_o that_o principal_o which_o the_o person_n look_v at_o to_o be_v remove_v but_o it_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o that_o trouble_n o_o lord_n take_v away_o iniquity_n o_o lord_n heal_v my_o soul_n o_o lord_n subdue_v my_o sin_n o_o be_v thou_o my_o sanctify_a god_n as_o well_o as_o my_o pardon_v god_n my_o sin_n trouble_v my_o soul_n o_o let_v i_o no_o more_o trouble_v thou_o by_o my_o sin_n etc._n etc._n four_o in_o the_o event_n or_o issue_n let_v the_o trouble_a sinner_n who_o appear_v now_o with_o such_o a_o great_a change_n let_v he_o i_o say_v be_v take_v off_o the_o rack_n let_v he_o get_v respite_n event_n in_o the_o event_n let_v he_o get_v deliverance_n from_o his_o fear_n and_o from_o his_o terror_n and_o from_o his_o distress_n there_o be_v four_o thing_n which_o will_v appear_v in_o he_o 1._o he_o will_v quick_o abate_v and_o grow_v remiss_a in_o all_o these_o duty_n will_v not_o be_v so_o serious_a so_o earnest_a so_o constant_a 2._o he_o will_v give_v way_n to_o contemplative_a evil_n and_o will_v be_v venture_v upon_o the_o occasion_n of_o sin_n again_o 3._o he_o will_v return_v in_o love_n to_o his_o sinful_a practice_n and_o with_o the_o dog_n will_v return_v again_o to_o his_o vomit_n 2_o pet._n 2._o 22._o 4._o his_o latter_a end_n be_v worse_o his_o conscience_n from_o be_v a_o trouble_a conscience_n will_v now_o become_v a_o harden_a conscience_n and_o sear_v 2_o pet._n 2._o 20._o but_o thus_o it_o never_o be_v with_o a_o heart_n renew_v by_o grace_n which_o turn_v we_o from_o evil_a to_o good_a and_o from_o good_a to_o better_a and_o still_o increase_v in_o the_o soul_n a_o great_a hatred_n of_o sin_n and_o fear_v to_o sin_n and_o the_o more_o that_o renew_v grace_n abound_v in_o the_o soul_n the_o more_o be_v tenderness_n abound_v in_o the_o conscience_n thus_o have_v you_o hear_v by_o way_n of_o use_n 1._o a_o conviction_n that_o many_o person_n be_v still_o in_o their_o old_a sinful_a condition_n and_o never_o bid_v this_o new_a heart_n give_v they_o 2._o that_o there_o be_v a_o possibility_n to_o be_v deceive_v about_o the_o fruiton_n of_o this_o be_v that_o sinfulness_n abound_v in_o i_o here_o be_v that_o ignorant_a vain_a worldly_a stubborn_a sensual_a rebellious_a unbelieving_a harden_a heart_n of_o which_o the_o lord_n speak_v and_o which_o the_o lord_n threaten_v and_o the_o man_n groan_v under_o this_o burden_n of_o his_o sinful_a heart_n and_o life_n psal_n 38._o 4._o and_o exceed_o complain_v of_o it_o rom._n 7._o 24._o and_o now_o loathe_v himself_o in_o his_o own_o eye_n ezek._n 36._o 31._o and_o bewail_v his_o condition_n with_o trouble_n of_o heart_n second_o to_o whosoever_o the_o lord_n give_v a_o new_a heart_n he_o heart_n to_o the_o last_o moment_n that_o the_o soul_n leave_v the_o body_n object_n now_o here_o it_o may_v be_v object_v that_o this_o can_v be_v a_o true_a and_o real_a sign_n of_o newness_n of_o heart_n because_o in_o a_o natural_a and_o unregenerate_a man_n there_o be_v many_o time_n a_o combat_n and_o conflict_n between_o their_o judgement_n and_o their_o affection_n and_o between_o their_o conscience_n and_o their_o temptation_n unto_o sin_n sol._n that_o there_o be_v such_o combat_n and_o conflict_n in_o unregenerate_a man_n i_o grant_v principle_n difference_n betwixt_o the_o conflict_n in_o a_o regenerate_a and_o unregenerate_a man_n in_o their_o principle_n but_o then_o they_o be_v of_o another_o nature_n different_a from_o those_o in_o a_o renew_a or_o regenerate_a person_n first_o in_o their_o principle_n the_o conflict_n in_o the_o one_o arise_v from_o servile_a fear_n the_o conflict_n in_o the_o other_o arise_v from_o spiritual_a hatred_n a_o natural_a conscience_n may_v see_v the_o danger_n of_o sin_v and_o thereupon_o oppose_v the_o affection_n incline_v to_o sin_n but_o a_o renew_a heart_n see_v the_o baseness_n of_o sin_n and_o thereupon_o incline_v the_o heart_n to_o hate_v it_o as_o sin_v a_o coal_n of_o fire_n there_o be_v the_o fire_n which_o burn_v and_o there_o be_v the_o coal_n which_o defile_v so_o in_o sin_n there_o be_v considerable_a the_o wrath_n unto_o which_o it_o do_v expose_v and_o the_o filthiness_n whereby_o it_o do_v pollute_v the_o soul_n the_o fear_n of_o burn_a wrath_n this_o make_v the_o unregenerate_a conscience_n to_o hold_v off_o and_o to_o argue_v against_o the_o temptation_n to_o sin_n but_o it_o be_v the_o defilement_n and_o pollution_n by_o sin_n which_o make_v the_o renew_a heart_n to_o abhor_v and_o contest_v with_o it_o not_o only_o or_o principal_o the_o evil_a by_o sin_n but_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n which_o be_v so_o extreme_o contrary_a to_o god_n in_o his_o nature_n and_o will_v and_o glory_n which_o we_o entire_o love_v etc._n etc._n seat_n in_o the_o seat_n second_o in_o the_o seat_n and_o place_n of_o combat_n simile_n the_o combat_n in_o unregenerate_a man_n be_v like_o that_o between_o soldier_n in_o several_a fort_n and_o that_o in_o renew_a person_n be_v like_o the_o fight_n of_o soldier_n in_o the_o same_o fort_n where_o every_o one_o sword_n be_v against_o every_o one_o the_o conflict_n or_o combat_n in_o the_o unregenerate_a be_v only_o betwixt_o one_o faculty_n and_o another_o distinct_a faculty_n the_o affection_n go_v one_o way_n and_o the_o judgement_n and_o conscience_n another_o way_n but_o when_o a_o man_n heart_n be_v renew_v by_o grace_n there_o now_o arise_v a_o war_n and_o combat_n within_o every_o faculty_n the_o unregenerate_a person_n be_v only_o with_o some_o gross_a scandalous_a and_o infamous_a sin_n but_o for_o secret_a sin_n or_o other_o extent_n in_o the_o extent_n sin_n which_o the_o world_n applaud_v these_o be_v still_o favour_v and_o harbour_v the_o natural_a man_n can_v go_v no_o far_o than_o his_o light_n which_o in_o he_o can_v make_v a_o clear_a and_o full_a discovery_n of_o sin_n nor_o will_v he_o quarrel_v with_o his_o sin_n further_o than_o he_o needs_o must_v to_o save_v his_o ease_n in_o conscience_n and_o credit_n with_o man_n but_o when_o the_o heart_n be_v renew_v by_o grace_n there_o the_o combat_n be_v against_o all_o know_a sin_n the_o reason_n whereof_o be_v this_o because_o the_o ground_n of_o opposition_n be_v not_o accidental_a and_o particular_a but_o natural_a and_o universal_a the_o newness_n of_o the_o heart_n be_v not_o a_o humour_n but_o a_o contrary_a nature_n to_o that_o of_o sin_n and_o therefore_o the_o heat_n do_v conflict_n with_o all_o dalilahs_n importunity_n or_o in_o case_n that_o natural_a conscience_n do_v prevail_v it_o be_v not_o to_o the_o mortify_n of_o any_o sin_n but_o only_o to_o a_o temporary_a repress_v and_o restrain_v of_o sin_n but_o the_o combat_n end_v otherwise_o where_o the_o heart_n be_v renew_v by_o grace_n for_o it_o make_v a_o more_o constant_a and_o resolute_a resistance_n and_o at_o the_o last_o though_o perhaps_o after_o some_o foil_n it_o get_v the_o victory_n over_o sin_n and_o win_v the_o field_n thus_o you_o see_v that_o the_o new_a spiritual_a combat_n or_o conflict_n be_v a_o true_a character_n of_o a_o heart_n indeed_o renew_v by_o grace_n it_o be_v not_o a_o sign_n of_o true_a grace_n that_o a_o man_n have_v no_o sin_n but_o that_o his_o heart_n be_v conflict_v with_o
