and_o in_o his_o whole_a carriage_n because_o little_a sin_n be_v so_o great_a in_o they_o especial_o minister_n here_o learn_v the_o apostle_n lesson_n to_o be_v instant_a in_o season_n &_o out_o of_o season_n to_o preach_v and_o exhort_v to_o comfort_v and_o rebuke_v public_o and_o private_o to_o good_a to_o bad_a when_o it_o be_v well_o take_v when_o it_o be_v ill_o take_v when_o they_o willing_o receive_v it_o and_o when_o they_o stubborn_o resist_v it_o when_o they_o commend_v he_o and_o reward_v he_o and_o when_o they_o rail_v at_o he_o and_o persecute_v he_o for_o it_o thus_o must_v he_o be_v diligent_a in_o season_n &_o out_o of_o season_n for_o the_o least_o negligence_n in_o his_o duty_n or_o omit_v the_o least_o opportunity_n of_o do_v good_a will_v when_o god_n burden_v his_o conscience_n then_o what_o pitiful_a conscience_n have_v those_o minister_n who_o daily_a negligence_n and_o unconscionable_a carelessness_n in_o their_o place_n be_v such_o as_o all_o man_n speak_v of_o and_o yet_o they_o be_v not_o touch_v sure_o these_o man_n be_v not_o of_o so_o tender_a conscience_n as_o the_o prophet_n be_v and_o either_o the_o prophet_n here_o be_v much_o more_o nice_a than_o need_v or_o else_o these_o man_n will_v prove_v to_o be_v in_o a_o miserable_a estate_n last_o let_v minister_n of_o care_n and_o conscience_n be_v here_o comfort_v in_o the_o examble_n of_o the_o prophet_n who_o be_v there_o but_o may_v find_v imperfection_n and_o blemish_n in_o himself_o which_o will_v often_o make_v he_o cry_v out_o woe_n be_v i_o but_o let_v not_o that_o discomfort_n they_o but_o rather_o rejoice_v that_o they_o can_v see_v their_o own_o weakness_n as_o the_o prophet_n do_v here_o if_o they_o have_v cause_n to_o exclaim_v against_o themselves_o they_o be_v not_o alone_o as_o be_v this_o and_o all_o other_o holy_a prophet_n case_n before_o they_o in_o have_v imperfection_n in_o themselves_o they_o be_v no_o more_o miserable_a than_o the_o prophet_n be_v but_o let_v they_o labour_n to_o be_v as_o bless_v in_o see_v &_o complain_v of_o themselves_o as_o he_o be_v and_o let_v every_o minister_n assure_v himself_o that_o the_o more_o he_o make_v conscience_n even_o of_o the_o least_o sin_n of_o all_o the_o more_o he_o resemble_v the_o ancient_a holy_a prophet_n &_o the_o more_o likely_a be_v he_o to_o work_v effectual_o in_o his_o ministry_n for_o his_o duty_n be_v to_o work_v in_o his_o people_n a_o conscience_n not_o of_o great_a sin_n only_o but_o even_o of_o all_o but_o how_o can_v he_o do_v that_o to_o they_o if_o he_o use_n of_o his_o tongue_n for_o a_o minister_n be_v a_o interpeter_n as_o he_o be_v call_v job._n 33.23_o that_o be_v the_o people_n to_o god_n by_o prayer_n and_o god_n to_o the_o people_n by_o preach_v he_o be_v god_n mouth_n and_o the_o people_n mouth_n so_o that_o the_o tongue_n of_o a_o minister_n be_v that_o part_n of_o his_o body_n which_o be_v to_o be_v use_v as_o a_o principal_a instrument_n of_o god_n glory_n and_o more_o to_o the_o setttng_a forth_o of_o his_o honour_n then_o any_o other_o now_o every_o man_n be_v to_o be_v try_v what_o he_o be_v by_o his_o call_n rather_o than_o by_o any_o other_o accidental_a or_o collateral_a course_n therefore_o the_o honour_n or_o dishonour_n of_o a_o minister_n be_v the_o use_n or_o the_o abuse_n of_o his_o tongue_n and_o his_o comfort_n or_o discomfort_n be_v the_o well_o use_v or_o not_o use_v of_o it_o the_o prophet_n therefore_o here_o affright_v at_o god_n presence_n and_o therefore_o retire_v into_o himself_o present_o his_o conscience_n check_n he_o for_o his_o most_o proper_a sin_n nam_o for_o some_o fault_n or_o negligence_n in_o his_o ministry_n which_o be_v the_o proper_a sin_n of_o that_o call_n and_o many_o and_o foul_a pollution_n above_o he_o shall_v beat_v down_o all_o proud_a
god_n glory_n in_o save_v of_o soul_n than_o aâ—_n the_o first_o set_v we_o not_o before_o our_o eye_n the_o honour_n but_o the_o danger_n of_o our_o call_n and_o humble_a we_o ourselves_o under_o the_o mighty_a hand_n of_o our_o god_n that_o he_o may_v exalt_v we_o in_o his_o due_a time_n and_o let_v we_o be_v content_a that_o god_n give_v any_o occasion_n or_o mean_n to_o pull_v we_o down_o either_o by_o outward_a cross_n or_o inward_a temptation_n and_o let_v we_o rejoice_v when_o we_o be_v thereby_o so_o far_o cast_v down_o that_o we_o cry_v out_o in_o the_o astonishment_n of_o our_o spirit_n as_o the_o prophet_n here_o woe_n be_v i_o i_o be_o undo_v but_o otherwise_o if_o we_o will_v needs_o follow_v the_o swinge_n of_o our_o proud_a nature_n and_o trust_v in_o our_o own_o ability_n gift_n and_o learning_n let_v we_o know_v we_o use_v carnal_a weapon_n in_o a_o spiritual_a warfare_n and_o let_v we_o be_v assure_v the_o lord_n will_v work_v no_o great_a work_n in_o his_o church_n by_o our_o ministry_n we_o may_v raise_v ourselves_o in_o worldly_a estimation_n and_o work_v out_o our_o own_o purpose_n but_o we_o shall_v do_v little_a in_o the_o salvation_n of_o soul_n show_v he_o his_o sin_n and_o his_o extreme_a danger_n by_o they_o we_o may_v learn_v that_o to_o be_v call_v to_o the_o ministry_n be_v to_o be_v as_o it_o be_v convert_v and_o regenerate_v &_o room_n he_o be_v to_o execute_v &_o of_o the_o unworthines_n of_o himself_o to_o so_o great_a a_o work_n he_o must_v be_v resolve_v that_o to_o call_v a_o man_n to_o the_o ministry_n be_v the_o great_a work_n that_o god_n work_v in_o his_o church_n but_o the_o convert_n of_o a_o sinner_n and_o call_v he_o to_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n nay_o it_o be_v a_o work_n even_o like_a unto_o it_o for_o as_o a_o sinner_n in_o his_o conversion_n so_o he_o at_o his_o vocation_n to_o that_o place_n be_v often_o to_o cry_v out_o in_o the_o amazement_n of_o his_o soul_n woe_n be_v i_o i_o be_o disobedient_a or_o some_o impatience_n in_o his_o ministry_n when_o the_o people_n be_v rebellious_a and_o resist_v his_o doctrine_n which_o passion_n may_v the_o rather_o vex_v he_o as_o we_o read_v it_o do_v jeremie_n the_o jew_n be_v so_o stubborn_a and_o stifnecked_a a_o people_n or_o it_o may_v be_v some_o want_n of_o zeal_n or_o forwardness_n these_o or_o some_o such_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o his_o fear_n and_o the_o conscience_n of_o â—â—ese_n make_v he_o here_o cry_v out_o that_o he_o can_v stand_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n where_o we_o leâ—râ—e_v first_o what_o a_o tender_a conceit_n of_o our_o own_o goodness_n when_o we_o appear_v before_o god._n it_o be_v therefore_o to_o be_v fear_v that_o the_o papist_n who_o thus_o magnify_v their_o own_o merit_n do_v seldom_o or_o never_o enter_v into_o earnest_a consideration_n of_o their_o own_o infirmity_n and_o do_v seldom_o present_v themselves_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n majesty_n for_o if_o they_o do_v then_o doubtless_o the_o least_o sight_n of_o their_o least_o pollution_n will_v make_v they_o far_o from_o ever_o think_v of_o their_o own_o merit_n they_o also_o tell_v we_o of_o work_n of_o superrerogation_n but_o it_o seem_v here_o this_o holy_a prophet_n have_v none_o of_o they_o and_o they_o teach_v a_o man_n may_v in_o this_o life_n perfect_o fulfil_v the_o law_n but_o who_o can_v do_v it_o if_o not_o minister_n and_o what_o minister_n if_o not_o extraordinary_a prophet_n and_o yet_o isaiah_n the_o first_o and_o chief_a of_o they_o exclaim_v here_o in_o pitiful_a manner_n against_o his_o pollution_n doubtless_o if_o the_o papist_n will_v cease_v flatter_a â—orâ—mselues_n and_o not_o examine_v their_o conscience_n by_o their_o own_o please_a corruption_n but_o present_v themselves_o in_o the_o face_n and_o presence_n of_o god_n majesty_n they_o will_v be_v far_o from_o these_o conceit_n in_o the_o next_o place_n whereas_o the_o prophet_n complain_v of_o the_o pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n as_o of_o the_o peculiar_a sin_n of_o his_o place_n minister_n be_v here_o teach_v to_o avoid_v that_o sin_n above_o all_o other_o and_o to_o labour_v in_o that_o duty_n above_o any_o other_o for_o the_o do_n of_o it_o be_v his_o most_o comfort_n the_o want_n of_o it_o be_v his_o most_o vexation_n his_o tongue_n be_v the_o instrument_n give_v he_o to_o honour_n god_n if_o he_o use_v it_o well_o it_o yield_v he_o comfort_n more_o than_o any_o other_o duty_n but_o if_o he_o use_v not_o or_o abuse_v his_o tongue_n the_o pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n will_v be_v the_o heavy_a burden_n of_o all_o they_o therefore_o be_v great_o deceive_v who_o think_v a_o minister_n to_o discharge_v sufficient_o his_o duty_n though_o he_o preach_v not_o if_o he_o keep_v good_a hospitality_n and_o make_v peace_n among_o his_o 〈◊〉_d and_o perform_v other_o work_n of_o charity_n and_o good_a life_n for_o if_o a_o minister_n have_v not_o this_o virtue_n he_o have_v none_o if_o he_o preach_v not_o if_o heâ—_n abuse_v his_o lip_n or_o if_o he_o open_v they_o not_o he_o have_v no_o conscience_n nor_o can_v have_v any_o comfort_n for_o that_o be_v the_o principal_a duty_n of_o virtue_n and_o good_a property_n that_o can_v commend_v a_o man_n in_o the_o world_n yet_o if_o his_o lip_n be_v pollute_v either_o by_o not_o preach_v or_o by_o negligent_a idle_a or_o careless_a preach_n this_o pollution_n will_v so_o stain_v his_o conscience_n and_o so_o burden_n he_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n that_o the_o time_n will_v come_v notwithstanding_o all_o his_o other_o follow_v and_o i_o dwell_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o people_n of_o pollute_a lip_n the_o prophet_n not_o only_a complaineâ—_n of_o his_o own_o pollution_n but_o of_o his_o people_n also_o among_o who_o he_o live_v and_o this_o he_o do_v for_o these_o cause_n first_o to_o teach_v we_o that_o it_o be_v the_o minister_n duty_n to_o confess_v not_o only_o his_o own_o sin_n but_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n and_o to_o complain_v of_o they_o to_o god_n for_o as_o he_o be_v the_o people_n interperter_n to_o god_n he_o must_v not_o think_v it_o enough_o to_o put_v up_o their_o petition_n to_o unfold_v their_o want_n and_o to_o crave_v relief_n for_o they_o at_o god_n hand_n but_o he_o must_v further_o take_v knowledge_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n and_o make_v both_o public_a and_o private_a confession_n of_o they_o to_o god_n and_o the_o more_o particular_o he_o can_v do_v this_o the_o better_a and_o this_o he_o be_v to_o do_v both_o for_o the_o people_n good_a and_o for_o his_o own_o also_o because_o it_o can_v be_v but_o that_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n be_v in_o some_o sort_n he_o for_o this_o be_v the_o peculiar_a danger_n of_o the_o magistrate_n and_o minister_n call_v that_o general_o the_o sin_n of_o their_o people_n be_v they_o i_o mean_v that_o they_o be_v accessary_a to_o the_o sin_n of_o their_o people_n either_o by_o provoke_v they_o by_o their_o evil_a 〈◊〉_d or_o by_o not_o reprove_v or_o not_o hinder_v or_o suffer_v or_o wink_v or_o cover_v and_o conceal_v or_o not_o punish_v they_o or_o not_o careful_o enough_o use_v mean_n to_o prevent_v they_o by_o all_o which_o mean_n and_o many_o more_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o people_n sin_n be_v the_o minister_n by_o communication_n so_o that_o as_o well_o for_o his_o own_o sake_n as_o they_o he_o be_v to_o confess_v to_o god_n their_o sin_n as_o well_o as_o his_o own_o now_o if_o a_o minister_n must_v confess_v his_o people_n sin_n than_o it_o follow_v consequent_o that_o he_o must_v know_v they_o and_o take_v notice_n of_o they_o for_o else_o he_o can_v confess_v they_o and_o this_o be_v one_o cause_n why_o the_o holy_a ghost_n command_v a_o pastor_n to_o know_v his_o flock_n 27.23_o he_o must_v not_o only_o have_v a_o flock_n and_o know_v which_o be_v his_o flock_n or_o have_v a_o general_a eye_n over_o it_o but_o he_o must_v have_v a_o particular_a and_o distinct_a knowledge_n of_o the_o state_n of_o it_o and_o the_o more_o particular_a the_o better_o and_o if_o the_o minister_n ought_v to_o know_v his_o people_n sin_n than_o it_o follow_v among_o they_o again_o if_o the_o minister_n be_v to_o confess_v his_o people_n sin_n and_o therefore_o must_v needs_o know_v they_o than_o it_o follow_v also_o that_o they_o must_v discover_v &_o confess_v they_o unto_o he_o or_o else_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a he_o shall_v perfect_o know_v their_o estate_n the_o want_n of_o this_o be_v a_o great_a fault_n in_o our_o church_n for_o however_o name_n by_o swear_v or_o blasphemy_n nor_o willing_o do_v he_o hear_v any_o other_o man_n talk_v or_o discourse_v large_o of_o god_n or_o of_o his_o greatness_n and_o his_o justice_n but_o such_o talk_n be_v tedious_a &_o cumbersome_a unto_o he_o and_o if_o he_o can_v break_v it_o off_o with_o other_o discourse_n than_o he_o sit_v as_o mute_a as_o a_o fish_n and_o inward_o either_o fret_n and_o abhor_v above_o all_o they_o wish_v in_o their_o heart_n it_o may_v never_o be_v and_o therefore_o s._n paul_n make_v it_o a_o token_n of_o a_o true_a believer_n and_o a_o holy_a man_n 4.8_o into_o the_o chamber_n of_o presence_n of_o the_o great_a king_n and_o shall_v not_o a_o man_n look_v about_o he_o afore_o he_o come_v there_o therefore_o if_o god_n rebuke_v moses_n for_o step_v too_o hasty_o towards_o the_o busâ—e_n where_o his_o presence_n be_v 3.5_o and_o say_v come_v not_o too_o near_o for_o the_o place_n where_o thou_o stand_v iâ—_n holy_a ground_n then_o how_o will_v sanctification_n of_o themselves_o but_o rush_v upon_o they_o as_o upon_o common_a &_o profane_a action_n whereas_o god_n be_v present_a there_o in_o a_o most_o holy_a and_o glorious_a manner_n these_o man_n sure_o will_v say_v the_o prophet_n here_o be_v of_o too_o nice_a a_o conscience_n but_o fearful_o and_o terrible_o shall_v god_n appear_v at_o last_o unto_o such_o man_n use_n as_o care_v not_o how_o they_o appear_v in_o his_o holy_a presence_n second_o this_o show_v the_o reason_n of_o the_o practice_n of_o all_o christian_a church_n who_o use_v to_o sing_v before_o the_o sermon_n and_o after_o namely_o not_o for_o decorum_n only_o &_o to_o grace_v the_o action_n but_o to_o sanctify_v and_o to_o humble_v ourselves_o because_o than_o we_o come_v before_o god_n presence_n they_o therefore_o do_v not_o think_v reverent_o enough_o of_o god_n and_o his_o presence_n who_o do_v by_o their_o practice_n in_o any_o sort_n use_n make_v way_n to_o the_o contrary_n three_o we_o may_v here_o learn_v the_o pitiful_a case_n of_o those_o minister_n who_o be_v so_o presumptuous_a as_o to_o exercise_v that_o holy_a function_n &_o yet_o remain_v in_o their_o sin_n without_o repentance_n what_o do_v these_o man_n they_o approach_v to_o the_o burn_a bush_n with_o their_o shoe_n on_o their_o foot_n that_o be_v into_o god_n presence_n in_o their_o sin_n what_o shall_v come_v of_o it_o in_o the_o end_n sure_o that_o burn_a fire_n shall_v consume_v they_o the_o least_o sin_n &_o small_a negligence_n affright_v this_o holy_a prophet_n when_o he_o shall_v go_v into_o god_n presence_n 50.16_o but_o these_o man_n dare_v come_v into_o the_o sanctuary_n of_o god_n yea_o dare_v take_v god_n word_n in_o their_o mouth_n be_v and_o yet_o hate_v to_o be_v reform_v that_o his_o speech_n shall_v fall_v like_o dew_n upon_o the_o grass_n yet_o it_o be_v the_o fiery_a tongue_n that_o beat_v down_o sin_n and_o work_v sound_a grace_n in_o the_o heart_n it_o may_v be_v there_o be_v some_o which_o need_v the_o fiery_a tongue_n this_o show_v apparent_o that_o those_o minister_n never_o have_v their_o lip_n touch_v with_o a_o coal_n from_o god_n altar_n that_o be_v their_o conscience_n never_o touch_v nor_o their_o soul_n season_v with_o the_o sanctify_a grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n which_o sit_v still_o and_o â—ee_o great_a and_o grevous_a stain_n in_o a_o a_o good_a minister_n but_o to_o go_v further_o whence_o come_v this_o coal_n take_a from_o the_o altar_n this_o coal_n of_o fire_n be_v take_v by_o the_o angel_n from_o the_o altar_n of_o god_n where_o be_v a_o fire_n which_o never_o go_v out_o and_o this_o fire_n be_v that_o that_o come_v from_o heaven_n send_v down_o by_o god_n at_o the_o dedication_n of_o the_o temple_n by_o solomon_n tongue_n be_v a_o special_a ornament_n of_o a_o minister_n but_o that_o fire_n must_v come_v from_o heaven_n that_o be_v his_o zeal_n must_v be_v a_o godly_a and_o heavenly_a zeal_n but_o he_o that_o have_v a_o rail_n lie_a a_o slanderous_a a_o malicious_a or_o a_o contentious_a tongue_n he_o have_v a_o fiery_a tongue_n indeed_o but_o this_o be_v kindle_v of_o the_o fire_n of_o hell_n as_o saint_n james_n say_v 3.6_o the_o unbridled_a tongue_n be_v a_o world_n of_o wickedness_n and_o defile_v the_o whole_a body_n set_v on_o fire_n the_o whole_a course_n of_o nature_n and_o be_v set_v â—n_n side_n this_o fire_n must_v be_v from_o god_n altar_n that_o be_v the_o fire_n of_o their_o zeal_n must_v be_v build_v by_o god_n spirit_n and_o not_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o discord_n and_o dissension_n ambitious_a humour_n turbulent_a &_o proud_a humour_n new_a opinion_n private_a quarrel_n all_o these_o nor_o none_o of_o these_o be_v for_o the_o pulpit_n these_o may_v make_v a_o man_n fiery_a tongue_v but_o this_o fire_n be_v never_o take_v from_o god_n altar_n as_o the_o prophet_n be_v this_o fiery_a tongue_n never_o come_v from_o heaven_n as_o the_o apostle_n do_v it_o follow_v teach_v but_o not_o well_o apply_v for_o that_o the_o law_n shall_v first_o be_v lay_v to_o their_o conscience_n other_o beat_v all_o upon_o the_o law_n when_o it_o may_v be_v their_o hearer_n be_v a_o people_n sufficient_o cast_v down_o and_o have_v more_o need_n to_o be_v raise_v up_o with_o the_o sweet_a comfort_n of_o the_o gospel_n other_o use_v to_o lay_v open_a the_o nakedness_n of_o other_o bring_v the_o catechism_n or_o point_n of_o ordinary_a instruction_n into_o the_o court_n where_o y_a e_o duty_n of_o king_n &_o counsellor_n shall_v be_v teach_v in_o all_o plainness_n and_o place_n which_o be_v infect_v so_o shall_v they_o be_v sure_a not_o to_o take_v pain_n in_o vain_a and_o thus_o much_o of_o the_o circumstance_n of_o his_o consolation_n it_o follow_v in_o the_o that_o remission_n or_o salvation_n be_v no_o more_o tie_v to_o the_o very_a element_n or_o the_o action_n than_o here_o the_o prophet_n forgiveness_n be_v to_o the_o coal_n of_o fire_n but_o the_o iniquity_n be_v forgive_v and_o thy_o sin_n purge_v all_o faithful_a minister_n must_v here_o learn_v the_o true_a way_n of_o comfort_v trouble_v and_o distress_a conscience_n namely_o first_o to_o draw_v he_o unto_o a_o sight_n of_o some_o particular_a sin_n then_o to_o summon_v he_o into_o god_n presence_n and_o there_o to_o arraign_v he_o for_o those_o sin_n until_o the_o view_n of_o the_o foulness_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n justice_n have_v sufficient_o humble_v he_o and_o then_o to_o labour_v to_o persuade_v his_o conscience_n upon_o good_a ground_n of_o the_o pardon_n of_o those_o sin_n by_o christ_n jesus_n this_o be_v the_o way_n that_o god_n use_v and_o devise_v this_o be_v the_o sure_a way_n that_o can_v fail_v some_o think_v that_o all_o trouble_n of_o mind_n be_v nothing_o but_o melancholy_a and_o therefore_o think_v nothing_o needs_o but_o physic_n and_o outward_a comfort_n but_o he_o that_o consider_v in_o what_o case_n the_o prophet_n here_o be_v or_o david_n when_o he_o make_v the_o 6._o the_o 32._o or_o the_o 51._o psalm_n psalm_n will_v be_v of_o another_o mind_n and_o will_v find_v that_o nothing_o can_v proper_o trouble_v the_o mind_n but_o sin_n therefore_o as_o the_o wise_a physician_n in_o his_o cure_n first_o search_v out_o the_o cause_n and_o then_o endeavour_n to_o to_o take_v it_o away_o so_o the_o good_a now_o to_o lay_v down_o what_o be_v thoâ—e_o true_a and_o good_a ground_n whereupon_o a_o minister_n may_v safe_o and_o comfortable_o pronounce_v pardon_n of_o sin_n to_o a_o sinner_n belong_v proper_o to_o another_o place_n in_o the_o next_o place_n let_v we_o here_o observe_v how_o the_o lord_n afore_o he_o renew_v the_o prophet_n commission_n or_o send_v he_o to_o preach_v to_o the_o minister_n of_o god_n will_v labour_v for_o this_o qualification_n above_o all_o other_o for_o doubtless_o he_o shall_v pronounce_v most_o powerful_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n to_o other_o to_o who_o conscience_n god_n have_v pronounce_v pardon_n of_o his_o own_o in_o the_o last_o place_n let_v we_o observe_v how_o the_o preacher_n be_v to_o be_v comfort_v before_o he_o go_v this_o new_a be_v in_o many_o christian_a church_n so_o many_o minister_n as_o they_o can_v all_o be_v maintain_v but_o some_o go_v up_o and_o down_o undisposed_a and_o unprovided_a for_o i_o answer_v this_o be_v too_o true_a in_o all_o age_n there_o be_v wander_v levits_n in_o the_o old_a testament_n which_o go_v up_o and_o down_o and_o offer_v their_o service_n and_o serve_v for_o 10._o shekel_n of_o silver_n and_o a_o suit_n of_o apparel_n and_o meat_n and_o drink_v 17.8.6_o but_o this_o calamity_n be_v upon_o the_o church_n of_o the_o jew_n never_o but_o then_o when_o there_o be_v no_o king_n in_o israel_n and_o every_o one_o do_v that_o which_o be_v good_a in_o his_o own_o eye_n if_o therefore_o there_o be_v any_o in_o our_o church_n &_o in_o christian_a nation_n which_o go_v up_o and_o such_o a_o man_n be_v as_o job_n say_v one_o of_o a_o thousand_o for_o â—ome_o want_n ability_n to_o discharge_v their_o duty_n as_o s._n paul_n say_v who_o be_v sufficient_a for_o those_o thing_n and_o some_o want_n willingness_n to_o undertake_v the_o labour_n as_o god_n here_o complain_v who_o shall_v go_v for_o we_o now_o to_o make_v use_n of_o this_o doctrine_n to_o our_o church_n it_o be_v to_o be_v wish_v that_o in_o these_o day_n &_o for_o our_o christian_n church_n the_o lord_n have_v not_o as_o great_a cause_n to_o cry_v out_o in_o the_o want_n of_o able_a faithful_a and_o godly_a minister_n who_o shall_v i_o send_v and_o who_o shall_v go_v for_o we_o but_o alas_o this_o want_n be_v too_o apparent_a and_o his_o blemish_n be_v too_o notorious_a and_o it_o be_v a_o work_n worthy_a the_o labour_n of_o king_n and_o prince_n to_o reform_v it_o and_o be_v a_o king_n evil_a nor_o to_o be_v heal_v but_o by_o the_o power_n of_o a_o king_n for_o as_o long_o as_o there_o be_v so_o few_o and_o mean_a preferment_n for_o painful_a minister_n there_o will_v never_o want_v abundance_n of_o such_o minister_n as_o do_v want_v either_o conscience_n or_o ability_n to_o discharge_v their_o duty_n in_o the_o mean_a time_n till_o god_n put_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o parliament_n and_o prince_n to_o look_v to_o this_o great_a and_o needful_a work_n let_v we_o minister_n learn_v our_o duty_n and_o first_o we_o who_o be_v in_o the_o university_n be_v here_o admonish_v to_o look_v to_o ourselves_o by_o god_n blessing_n we_o be_v many_o and_o daily_o grow_v more_o and_o more_o let_v we_o therefore_o so_o furnish_v ourselves_o as_o that_o when_o god_n or_o his_o church_n shall_v say_v who_o shall_v go_v for_o we_o and_o who_o shall_v i_o send_v then_o he_o may_v find_v many_o among_o we_o who_o he_o may_v send_v to_o that_o great_a work_n of_o the_o ministry_n and_o let_v we_o fear_v to_o be_v such_o as_o that_o god_n may_v affirm_v of_o we_o as_o in_o the_o day_n of_o job_n that_o he_o can_v find_v one_o of_o a_o thousand_o second_o all_o minister_n learn_v here_o not_o to_o content_v themselves_o with_o the_o name_n and_o title_n of_o minister_n but_o labour_n for_o the_o substantial_a ornament_n thereof_o nor_o to_o be_v willing_a to_o take_v the_o honour_n and_o liâ—ings_n and_o to_o refuse_v the_o burden_n and_o 〈◊〉_d of_o the_o ministry_n for_o else_o let_v they_o know_v god_n have_v no_o need_n of_o they_o for_o have_v the_o lord_n please_v or_o content_v himself_o with_o such_o kind_n of_o man_n as_o seek_v to_o be_v minister_n for_o themselves_o and_o not_o for_o his_o sake_n or_o be_v minister_n do_v feed_v themselves_o and_o not_o their_o flock_n or_o preach_v themselves_o and_o not_o christ_n then_o have_v he_o not_o need_v to_o have_v make_v this_o proclamation_n for_o all_o age_n have_v yield_v store_n of_o such_o but_o contrariwise_o he_o that_o be_v painful_a and_o faithful_a in_o this_o function_n let_v he_o know_v that_o god_n and_o his_o church_n have_v need_n of_o he_o last_o here_o the_o romish_a clergy_n be_v just_o to_o be_v tax_v who_o number_n be_v infinite_a but_o it_o be_v lamentable_a to_o see_v how_o few_o among_o they_o be_v such_o as_o the_o lord_n here_o seek_v for_o their_o order_n of_o regulars_n be_v exceed_v many_o beside_o all_o their_o secular_a priest_n and_o it_o be_v almost_o incredible_a how_o many_o thousand_o there_o be_v of_o dominican_n or_o franciscan_n or_o in_o some_o one_o of_o their_o order_n and_o yet_o among_o the_o many_o million_o of_o their_o monk_n there_o be_v scarce_o to_o be_v find_v one_o of_o many_o who_o for_o his_o learning_n &_o other_o gift_n be_v fit_a to_o be_v send_v to_o the_o work_n of_o god_n nay_o their_o ignorance_n be_v palpable_a and_o ridiculous_a to_o the_o world_n until_o of_o late_a be_v by_o luther_n and_o other_o of_o our_o church_n make_v ashamed_a thereof_o they_o have_v labour_v especial_o the_o jesuit_n to_o become_v learn_v how_o foul_a a_o thing_n be_v it_o that_o among_o so_o many_o the_o lord_n shall_v have_v cause_n to_o complain_v who_o shall_v we_o send_v the_o jesuit_n indeed_o many_a of_o they_o be_v learn_v but_o for_o other_o quality_n they_o be_v fit_a to_o be_v plotter_n &_o practiser_n in_o state_n matter_n spy_n or_o intelligencer_n reconciler_n seducer_n and_o subverter_n than_o minister_n and_o fit_a to_o be_v instrument_n of_o policy_n to_o evil_a king_n than_o minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n unto_o god_n but_o take_v away_o they_o and_o some_o few_o select_a monk_n and_o those_o but_o few_o out_o of_o many_o millionsâ—_n &_o then_o even_o for_o learning_n also_o god_n may_v cry_v and_o call_v &_o proclaim_v in_o their_o monastery_n who_o shall_v i_o send_v and_o if_o it_o be_v a_o shame_n and_o misery_n to_o a_o church_n to_o want_v such_o as_o god_n may_v send_v or_o to_o have_v but_o a_o few_o than_o the_o romish_a church_n be_v shameless_a which_o shame_v not_o to_o have_v so_o many_o and_o yet_o among_o they_o all_o who_o god_n may_v send_v almost_o none_o in_o the_o next_o place_n by_o this_o inquiry_n and_o question_v make_v by_o god_n who_o shall_v i_o send_v and_o who_o shall_v go_v for_o we_o the_o lord_n will_v teach_v we_o that_o no_o man_n be_v to_o undertake_v this_o function_n unless_o god_n call_v and_o send_v he_o therefore_o here_o be_v condemn_v the_o profane_a fancy_n of_o the_o anabaptist_n and_o all_o like_o they_o who_o think_v that_o any_o man_n upon_o a_o private_a motion_n may_v step_v forth_o and_o undertake_v the_o duty_n of_o a_o prophet_n to_o preach_v and_o expound_v etc._n etc._n oh_o but_o say_v they_o these_o motion_n be_v from_o god_n spirit_n sure_o they_o can_v say_v little_a for_o themselves_o who_o can_v say_v so_o much_o but_o that_o can_v serve_v their_o turn_n for_o if_o we_o say_v contrariwise_o nay_o but_o they_o be_v from_o the_o devil_n or_o at_o the_o least_o from_o your_o own_o vanity_n and_o pride_n how_o can_v they_o disprove_v it_o again_o may_v not_o the_o prophet_n have_v allege_v that_o with_o a_o better_a pretence_n and_o colour_n than_o they_o yet_o he_o stay_v till_o god_n here_o call_v he_o even_o so_o all_o good_a minister_n be_v to_o stay_v god_n call_v if_o any_o ask_v how_o he_o shall_v know_v when_o god_n call_v he_o i_o answer_v god_n call_v ordinary_o by_o his_o church_n her_o voice_n be_v he_o therefore_o whensoever_o the_o church_n of_o god_n say_v unto_o thou_o thou_o shall_v be_v send_v and_o thou_o shall_v go_v for_o we_o even_o than_o do_v the_o lord_n call_v we_o out_o to_o this_o holy_a function_n three_o let_v we_o observe_v how_o the_o lord_n say_v who_o shall_v i_o send_v &_o who_o shall_v go_v for_o we_o some_o interpreter_n gather_v out_o of_o this_o chapter_n a_o argument_n for_o the_o trinity_n of_o person_n as_o namely_o out_o of_o the_o three_o verse_n where_o the_o angel_n sing_v holy_a holy_a holy_a lord_n god_n etc._n etc._n but_o it_o be_v not_o sound_a enough_o to_o overthrow_v our_o stubborn_a enemy_n the_o jew_n and_o therefore_o it_o seem_v those_o divine_n be_v of_o a_o sound_a and_o wise_a judgement_n who_o see_v we_o have_v other_o place_n pregnant_a and_o plain_a enough_o therefore_o think_v it_o no_o good_a discreetion_n to_o urge_v this_o or_o any_o such_o place_n which_o may_v probable_o admit_v another_o interpretation_n lest_o that_o the_o jew_n find_v the_o weakness_n of_o the_o argument_n do_v judge_v all_o our_o proof_n to_o be_v as_o weak_a and_o so_o
who_o send_v i_o and_o for_o who_o i_o come_v will_v bear_v i_o out_o and_o thus_o much_o of_o the_o inquiry_n which_o god_n make_v and_o the_o manner_n of_o it_o now_o let_v we_o see_v the_o answer_n which_o the_o prophet_n make_v in_o these_o word_n answer_n then_o i_o say_v here_o be_o i_o send_v i_o the_o prophet_n after_o he_o be_v comfort_v by_o god_n and_o have_v his_o sin_n forgive_v then_o answer_v here_o be_o i_o send_v i_o first_o mark_v here_o what_o a_o great_a change_n be_v wrought_v on_o the_o sudden_a he_o who_o a_o little_a afore_o fear_v and_o shrink_v at_o the_o least_o appearance_n of_o god_n glory_n now_o stand_v forth_o bold_o as_o soon_o as_o he_o be_v call_v and_o answer_v here_o be_o i_o send_v i_o so_o great_a a_o matter_n be_v it_o for_o a_o minister_n to_o have_v his_o sin_n forgive_v and_o to_o feel_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n to_o his_o soul_n and_o conscience_n here_o therefore_o we_o have_v a_o answer_n to_o two_o great_a question_n often_o move_v in_o the_o world_n first_o many_o will_v have_v quietness_n of_o mind_n and_o peace_n of_o conscience_n and_o can_v attain_v unto_o it_o if_o they_o ask_v how_o they_o may_v to_o they_o i_o answer_v here_o be_v the_o way_n seek_v it_o not_o in_o worldly_a wealth_n carnal_a pleasure_n nor_o humane_a learning_n in_o company_n nor_o recreation_n but_o seek_v it_o in_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n and_o pardon_v of_o thy_o sin_n and_o thou_o shall_v not_o miss_v of_o it_o thus_o shall_v thou_o have_v comfort_n in_o thy_o own_o conscience_n courage_n before_o man_n and_o boldness_n towards_o god_n second_o many_o student_n in_o divinity_n will_v glad_o be_v minister_n and_o do_v much_o honour_n the_o call_v but_o they_o find_v a_o fear_n and_o shrink_n in_o themselves_o and_o thereby_o a_o unwillingness_n to_o venture_v upon_o it_o if_o they_o ask_v how_o they_o amend_v this_o i_o answer_v or_o rather_o the_o example_n of_o his_o prophet_n answer_v for_o i_o let_v that_o man_n set_v himself_o in_o god_n presence_n enter_v into_o himself_o search_v his_o conscience_n fond_a out_o his_o sin_n confess_v and_o bewail_v they_o to_o god_n crave_v pardon_n in_o christ_n blood_n and_o grace_n to_o leave_v they_o and_o cease_v not_o till_o he_o hear_v the_o voice_n of_o god_n spirit_n sound_v in_o his_o conscience_n thy_o sin_n be_v forgive_v thou_o then_o when_o god_n shall_v ask_v who_o shall_v send_v thou_o will_v answer_v ready_o and_o with_o joy_n here_o be_o i_o send_v i_o and_o again_o many_o be_v drive_v from_o this_o call_n to_o behold_v the_o contempt_n and_o reproach_n and_o danger_n which_o belong_v unto_o it_o but_o let_v those_o man_n mark_v here_o the_o phrase_n of_o this_o holy_a prophet_n when_o god_n ask_v who_o shall_v i_o senâ—e_v he_o may_v have_v answer_v lord_n i_o will_v go_v but_o such_o disgrace_n and_o discouragement_n do_v accompany_v this_o function_n as_o i_o desire_v to_o be_v excuse_v but_o he_o cast_v aside_o all_o such_o conceit_n answer_v peremptory_o here_o be_o i_o send_v i_o how_o come_v this_o to_o pasâ—e_n for_o certain_o the_o prophet_n be_v as_o sensible_a of_o these_o wrong_n as_o any_o of_o we_o all_o for_o he_o be_v noble_o bear_v and_o bring_v up_o and_o be_v of_o the_o blood_n royal_a sure_o because_o he_o see_v he_o be_v in_o god_n favour_n he_o have_v he_o and_o his_o commission_n on_o his_o side_n and_o he_o hold_v this_o for_o a_o sure_a ground_n if_o god_n be_v on_o my_o side_n who_o can_v be_v against_o i_o therefore_o doubtless_o those_o man_n who_o be_v drive_v back_o by_o these_o discouragement_n be_v never_o settle_v in_o assurance_n that_o their_o sin_n be_v forgive_v nor_o satisfy_v sufficient_o that_o god_n be_v on_o the_o side_n of_o all_o good_a minister_n and_o that_o that_o call_v as_o it_o have_v his_o authority_n from_o god_n so_o likewise_o allowance_n blessing_n assistance_n and_o defence_n of_o god_n above_o any_o other_o call_v for_o if_o they_o be_v they_o will_v scorn_v the_o storm_n and_o contemn_v the_o contempt_n of_o the_o profane_a world_n and_o with_o much_o courage_n and_o comfort_n set_v their_o hand_n to_o god_n plough_n and_o say_v with_o the_o prophet_n here_o i_o be_o send_v i_o second_o let_v we_o observe_v how_o the_o prophet_n when_o god_n ask_v the_o question_n send_v he_o not_o to_o other_o nor_o commend_v other_o to_o that_o service_n as_o be_v to_o be_v think_v he_o may_v have_v do_v many_o in_o the_o church_n of_o the_o jew_n but_o offer_v himself_o here_o be_o i_o it_o control_v the_o carnal_a course_n of_o many_o among_o we_o in_o the_o university_n who_o think_v it_o sufficient_a to_o live_v there_o and_o send_v out_o other_o man_n and_o give_v testimony_n and_o letter_n of_o commendation_n to_o other_o man_n but_o themselves_o stir_v not_o when_o question_n be_v make_v who_o shall_v go_v to_o such_o a_o place_n or_o who_o shall_v be_v send_v to_o such_o a_o parish_n they_o say_v not_o here_o be_o i_o but_o either_o it_o be_v too_o little_a a_o live_n or_o too_o great_a a_o charge_n or_o ill_o seat_v or_o some_o fault_n it_o have_v that_o they_o will_v not_o be_v send_v to_o it_o but_o will_v answer_v god_n and_o his_o church_n there_o be_v such_o a_o man_n and_o give_v he_o letter_n of_o testimony_n or_o commendation_n and_o so_o all_o be_v well_o but_o for_o themselves_o they_o live_v too_o sweet_a and_o easy_a life_n willing_o to_o undertake_v the_o attempt_n and_o burden_n of_o the_o ministry_n let_v such_o man_n therefore_o learn_v when_o god_n and_o his_o church_n give_v they_o a_o calling_n to_o answer_v with_o the_o prophet_n here_o be_o i_o send_v i_o and_o let_v all_o such_o as_o be_v student_n of_o divinity_n in_o the_o university_n mark_v here_o the_o prophet_n answer_n not_o i_o will_v be_v ready_a but_o here_o i_o be_o why_o take_v he_o no_o long_a time_n because_o he_o be_v now_o sufficient_o qualify_v where_o let_v they_o learn_v not_o to_o linger_v and_o lie_v riot_v too_o long_o in_o their_o specâ—daâ—iâ—e_a course_n but_o when_o they_o be_v competent_o furnish_v with_o learning_n and_o other_o quality_n befit_v that_o call_n let_v they_o show_v themselves_o willing_a and_o ready_a to_o yield_v their_o service_n to_o the_o church_n when_o they_o shall_v be_v call_v for_o as_o a_o apple_n may_v as_o well_o hang_v too_o long_o on_o the_o tree_n as_o be_v pull_v too_o soon_o and_o both_o make_v it_o unfit_a for_o use_v so_o may_v man_n as_o well_o stay_v too_o long_o as_o go_v out_o too_o soon_o and_o both_o way_n be_v make_v unprofitable_a or_o at_o least_o less_o profitable_a in_o the_o church_n and_o to_o conclude_v this_o second_o point_n it_o be_v not_o unworthy_a to_o be_v note_v that_o the_o prophet_n say_v not_o here_o i_o be_o and_o i_o run_v on_o my_o own_o head_n but_z send_v i_o he_o will_n the_o lord_n to_o send_v he_o then_o where_o be_v they_o who_o dare_v brag_v of_o their_o private_a motion_n and_o will_v run_v when_o they_o be_v not_o send_v the_o prophet_n may_v have_v say_v oh_o now_o i_o feel_v a_o motion_n from_o the_o spirit_n therefore_o i_o will_v go_v and_o preach_v but_o he_o stay_v till_o he_o be_v send_v in_o express_a term_n let_v no_o man_n therefore_o presume_v to_o press_v into_o this_o function_n till_o he_o be_v full_o resolve_v in_o his_o conscience_n that_o god_n and_o his_o church_n have_v say_v unto_o he_o go_v and_o though_o a_o man_n be_v never_o so_o well_o qualify_v with_o all_o manner_n of_o sufficiency_n yet_o let_v he_o sit_v still_o and_o stay_v god_n leisure_n and_o let_v he_o say_v here_o i_o be_o send_v i_o and_o so_o rest_v content_v until_o he_o be_v send_v if_o any_o man_n say_v it_o be_v unfit_a that_o a_o man_n shall_v say_v so_o of_o himself_o i_o answer_v let_v he_o not_o say_v so_o in_o word_n but_o in_o deed_n let_v he_o therefore_o make_v proof_n of_o himself_o and_o give_v the_o church_n trial_n of_o his_o gift_n upon_o which_o experience_n of_o his_o gift_n if_o he_o be_v find_v sufficient_a that_o practice_n of_o he_o be_v all_o one_o and_o much_o more_o than_o if_o he_o have_v say_v here_o i_o be_o send_v i_o thus_o we_o see_v the_o prophet_n will_v not_o stir_v till_o he_o be_v send_v and_o therefore_o in_o the_o next_o word_n he_o be_v bid_v to_o go_v and_o he_o say_v go_v and_o speak_v unto_o this_o people_n here_o be_v the_o three_o and_o last_o promise_n receive_v namely_o the_o essential_a word_n of_o his_o commission_n wherein_o after_o god_n have_v seek_v for_o one_o to_o go_v and_o the_o prophet_n have_v present_v himself_o and_o offer_v his_o
