not_o teach_v at_o all_o or_o only_o teach_v the_o art_n of_o live_v in_o the_o world_n by_o labour_n and_o industry_n that_o god_n may_v as_o well_o judge_v man_n for_o be_v rich_a or_o poor_a when_o their_o fortune_n be_v not_o at_o their_o own_o disposal_n but_o owe_v to_o their_o birth_n or_o to_o prosperous_a or_o adverse_a event_n of_o providence_n as_o to_o judge_v man_n by_o the_o different_a degree_n and_o improvement_n of_o knowledge_n thus_o as_o for_o faith_n some_o never_o hear_v of_o christ_n at_o all_o or_o if_o they_o do_v it_o be_v only_o under_o the_o character_n of_o a_o imposter_n or_o of_o a_o fable_n but_o never_o have_v the_o true_a reason_n of_o faith_n explain_v to_o they_o other_o have_v be_v very_o ill_o instruct_v in_o the_o faith_n of_o christ_n and_o never_o have_v opportunity_n to_o rectify_v their_o mistake_n and_o yet_o as_o no_o man_n be_v bind_v to_o know_v what_o nature_n do_v not_o teach_v unless_o it_o be_v reveal_v to_o he_o so_o no_o man_n be_v bind_v to_o believe_v what_o he_o have_v not_o so_o much_o as_o hear_v of_o nor_o to_o believe_v every_o thing_n he_o do_v hear_v without_o sufficient_a evidence_n nor_o to_o receive_v the_o true_a faith_n of_o christ_n which_o he_o be_v never_o teach_v so_o that_o shall_v god_n divide_v the_o world_n at_o the_o last_o day_n only_o into_o believer_n and_o infidel_n this_o will_v be_v a_o very_a unequal_a distribution_n because_o great_a part_n of_o the_o world_n never_o have_v the_o faith_n of_o christ_n preach_v to_o they_o and_o though_o infidelity_n will_v condemn_v those_o man_n who_o have_v be_v instruct_v in_o the_o faith_n of_o christ_n and_o will_v not_o believe_v yet_o it_o can_v in_o reason_n and_o justice_n be_v impute_v to_o those_o man_n who_o never_o hear_v of_o christ._n but_o now_o the_o be_v and_o providence_n of_o god_n and_o the_o difference_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a be_v know_v to_o all_o mankind_n nature_n teach_v this_o and_o therefore_o all_o mankind_n be_v bind_v to_o know_v it_o and_o all_o mankind_n may_v be_v judge_v by_o this_o rule_n whether_o they_o know_v god_n and_o worship_v he_o as_o god_n and_o take_v care_n to_o do_v that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o to_o avoid_v the_o evil_n this_o account_n st._n paul_n give_v we_o of_o it_o for_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v reveal_v from_o heaven_n against_o all_o ungodliness_n and_o unrighteousness_n of_o man_n who_o hold_v the_o truth_n in_o unrighteousness_n because_o that_o which_o may_v be_v know_v of_o god_n be_v manifest_a in_o they_o for_o god_n have_v show_v it_o unto_o they_o for_o the_o invisible_a thing_n of_o god_n from_o the_o creation_n of_o the_o world_n be_v clear_o see_v be_v understand_v by_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v make_v even_o his_o eternal_a power_n and_o godhead_n so_o that_o they_o be_v without_o excuse_n because_o that_o when_o they_o know_v god_n they_o glorify_v he_o not_o as_o god_n neither_o be_v thankful_a but_o become_v vain_a in_o their_o imagination_n and_o their_o foolish_a heart_n be_v darken_v 1_o rom._n 18_o 19_o 20_o 21._o and_o the_o same_o apostle_n tell_v we_o that_o the_o gentile_n which_o have_v not_o the_o law_n no_o divine_a write_v law_n do_v by_o nature_n the_o thing_n contain_v in_o the_o law_n these_o have_v not_o the_o law_n be_v a_o law_n unto_o themselves_o which_o show_v the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n write_v in_o their_o heart_n their_o conscience_n also_o bear_v witness_n and_o their_o thought_n the_o mean_a while_n accuse_v or_o else_o excuse_v one_o another_o 2_o rom._n 14_o 15_o 16._o so_o that_o all_o mankind_n even_o heathen_n themselves_o have_v a_o natural_a knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o of_o good_a and_o evil_a and_o therefore_o may_v be_v judge_v for_o what_o they_o know_v and_o condemn_v by_o god_n for_o transgress_v those_o law_n of_o righteousness_n for_o which_o their_o own_o conscience_n condemn_v they_o for_o this_o leave_v they_o without_o excuse_n and_o if_o god_n will_v judge_v the_o heathen_n by_o their_o work_n and_o condemn_v they_o for_o those_o sin_n they_o commit_v against_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n a_o equal_a justice_n require_v that_o christian_n shall_v be_v judge_v by_o their_o work_n also_o for_o be_v it_o equal_a to_o damn_v a_o heathen_a for_o those_o sin_n which_o a_o christian_a may_v commit_v and_o be_v save_v will_v equal_a and_o impartial_a justice_n allow_v that_o when_o a_o heathen_a and_o a_o christian_a be_v equal_o wicked_a the_o christian_a shall_v be_v save_v and_o the_o heathen_a damn_a be_v not_o this_o to_o accept_v the_o person_n of_o man_n in_o judgement_n to_o make_v a_o difference_n between_o the_o man_n when_o there_o be_v no_o difference_n in_o their_o action_n and_o yet_o the_o same_o apostle_n tell_v we_o there_o be_v no_o respect_n of_o person_n with_o god_n for_o as_o many_o as_o have_v sin_v without_o law_n shall_v also_o perish_v without_o law_n and_o as_o many_o as_o have_v sin_v in_o the_o law_n shall_v be_v judge_v by_o the_o law_n 2_o rom._n 11_o 12._o and_o that_o this_o be_v the_o rule_n of_o judgement_n in_o the_o day_n when_o god_n shall_v judge_v the_o secret_n of_o man_n by_o jesus_n christ_n according_a to_o the_o gospel_n v_o 16._o there_o be_v no_o other_o common_a and_o general_a rule_n whereby_o all_o mankind_n can_v be_v judge_v but_o only_o this_o to_o render_v to_o every_o man_n according_a to_o his_o work_n for_o there_o be_v nothing_o else_o for_o which_o man_n must_v be_v judge_v that_o be_v common_a to_o all_o man_n but_o the_o natural_a knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o the_o difference_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a christian_n indeed_o know_v more_o than_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n teach_v heathen_n and_o therefore_o have_v more_o to_o account_v for_o than_o heathen_n have_v but_o if_o heathen_n shall_v be_v condemn_v for_o their_o sin_n against_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n if_o they_o shall_v be_v judge_v according_a to_o their_o work_n christian_n have_v more_o reason_n to_o expect_v this_o for_o if_o god_n be_v a_o righteous_a and_o impartial_a judge_n he_o can_v condemn_v one_o sinner_n for_o his_o sin_n and_o save_v another_o as_o wicked_a as_o he_o the_o nature_n of_o virtue_n and_o vice_n be_v the_o same_o in_o all_o mankind_n whether_o heathen_n jew_n or_o christian_n and_o deserve_v in_o itsself_n the_o same_o reward_n and_o punishment_n if_o it_o be_v righteous_a in_o god_n to_o punish_v the_o sin_n of_o heathen_n it_o be_v righteous_a in_o god_n to_o punish_v the_o same_o sin_n of_o christian_n to_o render_v to_o all_o man_n whoever_o they_o be_v according_a to_o their_o work_n for_o this_o be_v to_o deal_v equal_o with_o all_o men._n 3_o dly_z i_o add_v far_o that_o nothing_o else_o be_v the_o proper_a object_n of_o judgement_n but_o the_o good_a or_o evil_a of_o our_o action_n and_o therefore_o if_o we_o be_v judge_v at_o all_o we_o must_v be_v judge_v for_o the_o good_a or_o evil_a we_o have_v do_v for_o do_v judge_v signify_v any_o thing_n else_o but_o examine_v what_o good_a or_o evil_a such_o a_o man_n have_v do_v and_o reward_v or_o punish_v he_o according_a to_o the_o good_a or_o evil_a he_o have_v do_v and_o therefore_o a_o righteous_a judge_n can_v judge_v man_n can_v reward_v or_o punish_v they_o for_o that_o which_o be_v neither_o good_a nor_o evil._n now_o be_v there_o any_o thing_n good_a or_o evil_a but_o virtue_n or_o vice_n what_o be_v knowledge_n good_a for_o which_o do_v not_o direct_a and_o govern_v our_o life_n what_o be_v faith_n good_a for_o which_o do_v not_o renew_v and_o sanctify_v we_o be_v there_o not_o very_o know_v and_o believe_v devil_n do_v not_o faith_n and_o knowledge_n make_v every_o sin_n we_o commit_v against_o faith_n and_o against_o knowledge_n the_o more_o inexcusable_a do_v not_o our_o saviour_n tell_v we_o that_o he_o who_o know_v his_o master_n will_n and_o do_v it_o not_o shall_v be_v beat_v with_o many_o stripe_n what_o merit_n or_o virtue_n be_v there_o in_o a_o presumptuous_a reliance_n on_o christ_n for_o salvation_n to_o call_v he_o lord_n lord_n and_o not_o to_o do_v the_o thing_n which_o he_o have_v command_v and_o can_v we_o think_v then_o that_o god_n will_v reward_v we_o for_o our_o knowledge_n or_o our_o faith_n and_o overlook_v all_o the_o evil_n and_o impurity_n of_o our_o life_n will_v he_o reward_v we_o for_o that_o which_o deserve_v no_o reward_n and_o not_o punish_v we_o for_o that_o which_o deserve_v punishment_n be_v this_o to_o judge_v the_o world_n in_o righteousness_n this_o be_v abundant_o enough_o to_o prove_v that_o we_o must_v be_v judge_v according_a to_o our_o work_n that_o we_o must_v receive_v the_o thing_n do_v in_o the_o body_n whether_o good_a or_o evil_a since_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o
their_o appetite_n and_o passion_n and_o to_o make_v they_o good_a man_n if_o there_o be_v no_o reward_n for_o virtue_n and_o piety_n in_o the_o next_o world_n why_o shall_v he_o afflict_v good_a man_n all_o their_o life_n who_o virtue_n deserve_v a_o more_o prosperous_a fortune_n only_o to_o exercise_v their_o faith_n and_o patience_n and_o to_o advance_v they_o still_o to_o more_o divine_a perfection_n unless_o he_o intend_v to_o reward_v their_o present_a suffering_n and_o their_o eminent_a virtue_n with_o a_o bright_a and_o more_o glorious_a crown_n there_o be_v many_o passage_n of_o providence_n which_o there_o can_v be_v no_o other_o account_n give_v of_o but_o that_o they_o be_v method_n of_o discipline_n to_o conquer_v man_n love_n to_o sin_n or_o to_o improve_v their_o grace_n and_o virtue_n and_o i_o be_o sure_a there_o can_v be_v no_o account_n give_v of_o this_o why_o god_n shall_v with_o so_o much_o patience_n and_o forbearance_n expect_v the_o repentance_n of_o some_o sinner_n and_o exercise_v good_a man_n with_o so_o much_o severity_n to_o make_v they_o better_o unless_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n in_o this_o world_n have_v a_o principal_a regard_n to_o the_o reward_n and_o punishment_n of_o the_o next_o that_o be_v unless_o there_o be_v a_o judgement_n to_o come_v to_o reward_v good_a man_n and_o to_o punish_v the_o wicked_a this_o i_o hope_n be_v sufficient_a to_o make_v good_a this_o consequence_n that_o if_o god_n govern_v the_o world_n at_o present_a he_o will_v judge_v it-hereaft_a sect_n iv._o the_o natural_a presage_n of_o conscience_n prove_v a_o future_a judgement_n and_o if_o there_o be_v a_o future_a state_n there_o must_v be_v a_o future_a judgement_n v._o the_o natural_a presage_n of_o conscience_n be_v another_o good_a argument_n or_o a_o future_a judgement_n that_o be_v all_o man_n natural_o expect_v to_o be_v judge_v to_o be_v reward_v or_o punish_v for_o the_o good_a or_o evil_a they_o do_v and_o this_o be_v a_o strong_a natural_a presumption_n that_o god_n will_v judge_v the_o world_n this_o be_v a_o argument_n of_o great_a moment_n and_o therefore_o deserve_v to_o be_v particular_o explain_v to_o which_o purpose_n i_o shall_v i._o show_v you_o that_o it_o be_v so_o 2._o that_o this_o be_v not_o a_o artificial_a impression_n but_o the_o natural_a sense_n of_o our_o own_o mind_n and_o 3._o that_o this_o do_v prove_v that_o god_n will_v judge_v the_o world_n and_o render_v to_o every_o man_n according_a to_o his_o work_n i._o that_o it_o be_v so_o that_o all_o man_n have_v a_o natural_a presage_v of_o judgement_n there_o be_v indeed_o a_o very_a formidable_a objection_n against_o this_o that_o very_o few_o man_n live_v as_o if_o they_o do_v expect_v to_o be_v judge_v but_o this_o be_v as_o good_a a_o argument_n against_o man_n belief_n of_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o express_a revelation_n of_o a_o future_a judgement_n as_o it_o be_v against_o the_o natural_a sense_n and_o presage_n of_o conscience_n for_o there_o be_v too_o many_o who_o profess_v to_o believe_v the_o gospel_n but_o do_v not_o live_v as_o if_o they_o do_v believe_v a_o judgement_n but_o i_o need_v not_o trouble_v myself_o about_o this_o because_o it_o be_v a_o objection_n only_o to_o atheist_n and_o infidel_n if_o indeed_o it_o be_v a_o objection_n to_o they_o other_o bad_a man_n who_o live_v as_o if_o they_o do_v not_o believe_v a_o judgement_n yet_o feel_v in_o themselves_o that_o they_o do_v believe_v it_o and_o when_o they_o think_v of_o it_o they_o believe_v and_o tremble_v too_o as_o the_o devil_n do_v though_o at_o other_o time_n they_o be_v overpower_v by_o the_o world_n and_o the_o flesh_n to_o act_v contrary_a to_o the_o conviction_n of_o conscience_n and_o the_o fear_n of_o judgement_n the_o heathen_n themselves_o who_o have_v only_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n to_o direct_v they_o be_v very_o sensible_a of_o the_o private_a judgement_n of_o their_o own_o conscience_n which_o do_v either_o accuse_v they_o when_o they_o do_v ill_a and_o fill_v they_o with_o remorse_n and_o fear_n of_o vengeance_n or_o excuse_v commend_v and_o applaud_v they_o when_o they_o do_v well_o and_o give_v they_o great_a and_o cheerful_a hope_n of_o a_o reward_n as_o st._n paul_n tell_v we_o 2_o rom._n 14.15_o and_o be_v frequent_o observe_v by_o the_o heathen_a philosopher_n poet_n orator_n and_o historian_n as_o a_o thing_n universal_o acknowledge_v and_o indeed_o i_o know_v no_o man_n at_o this_o day_n who_o deny_v it_o and_o therefore_o i_o need_v not_o prove_v it_o all_o man_n feel_v this_o in_o themselves_o even_o atheist_n and_o infidel_n whenever_o they_o be_v serious_a and_o thoughtful_a when_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n overtake_v they_o or_o they_o see_v the_o near_a approach_n of_o death_n and_o another_o world_n the_o great_a power_n can_v defend_v man_n from_o these_o fear_n prince_n and_o politician_n be_v equal_o expose_v to_o they_o with_o mean_a subject_n those_o who_o no_o humane_a power_n can_v touch_v be_v overawe_v by_o a_o invisible_a justice_n ii_o since_o this_o be_v universal_o acknowledge_v the_o only_a question_n be_v to_o what_o cause_n to_o attribute_v these_o fear_n and_o rebuke_n of_o conscience_n the_o atheist_n will_v by_o no_o mean_n allow_v these_o fear_n to_o be_v natural_a but_o only_o the_o effect_n of_o a_o superstitious_a education_n as_o they_o say_v the_o belief_n of_o a_o god_n and_o the_o difference_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a be_v man_n have_v be_v teach_v from_o their_o very_a infancy_n that_o there_o be_v a_o invisible_a power_n that_o govern_v the_o world_n which_o will_v reward_v good_a man_n and_o punish_v the_o wicked_a and_o have_v be_v fright_v with_o the_o fairy_n story_n of_o infernal_a judge_n and_o styx_n and_o acheron_n or_o hell-fire_n and_o this_o make_v such_o a_o impression_n upon_o their_o tender_a fancy_n as_o can_v never_o be_v wear_v out_o at_o least_o not_o without_o great_a industry_n and_o resolution_n of_o mind_n and_o this_o they_o say_v make_v weak_a man_n conclude_v that_o they_o be_v natural_a but_o this_o be_v a_o very_a absurd_a and_o ridiculous_a account_n of_o the_o matter_n as_o will_v appear_v if_o you_o consider_v by_o what_o rule_v we_o be_v to_o judge_v what_o be_v natural_a and_o what_o not_o for_o if_o these_o presage_n of_o conscience_n have_v all_o the_o mark_n and_o sign_n of_o be_v natural_a that_o we_o can_v have_v that_o any_o thing_n be_v natural_a we_o must_v either_o say_v that_o nothing_o be_v natural_a or_o that_o we_o can_v tell_v what_o be_v natural_a and_o what_o not_o or_o we_o must_v confess_v it_o great_a perverseness_n of_o mind_n to_o deny_v that_o to_o be_v natural_a which_o have_v all_o the_o sign_n and_o mark_v of_o be_v natural_a that_o any_o thing_n can_v have_v now_o i._o that_o be_v natural_a which_o be_v universal_a or_o common_a to_o the_o whole_a kind_a for_o we_o have_v no_o other_o way_n of_o know_v what_o the_o nature_n of_o thing_n be_v but_o by_o observe_v what_o be_v common_a to_o all_o creature_n of_o the_o same_o kind_a and_o species_n for_o nothing_o be_v common_a to_o all_o individual_n but_o a_o common_a nature_n and_o if_o what_o be_v universal_a and_o common_a to_o all_o mankind_n be_v natural_a these_o censure_n and_o rebuke_n of_o conscience_n be_v natural_a for_o they_o be_v common_a to_o all_o man_n for_o though_o we_o shall_v grant_v that_o some_o few_o atheist_n have_v whole_o conquer_v these_o fear_n and_o never_o feel_v the_o lash_n and_o rebuke_n of_o their_o own_o conscience_n such_o few_o and_o rare_a example_n ought_v to_o be_v look_v on_o as_o the_o corruption_n of_o humane_a nature_n not_o as_o the_o measure_n and_o standard_n of_o it_o for_o it_o be_v no_o news_n to_o say_v that_o humane_a nature_n may_v be_v corrupt_v that_o the_o very_a essential_a principle_n of_o it_o may_v be_v deprave_v and_o in_o such_o case_n we_o always_o judge_v and_o that_o with_o very_o good_a reason_n that_o what_o be_v most_o common_a and_o universal_a be_v natural_a not_o what_o be_v as_o rare_a and_o as_o ominous_a as_o a_o monstrous_a birth_n two_o especial_o when_o we_o consider_v that_o that_o be_v most_o natural_a which_o be_v bear_v and_o breed_v with_o we_o and_o be_v the_o original_a state_n of_o humane_a nature_n for_o nature_n be_v before_o art_n and_o before_o the_o voluntary_a corruption_n and_o degeneracy_n of_o nature_n this_o atheist_n see_v and_o confess_v and_o therefore_o attribute_v the_o belief_n of_o a_o god_n and_o the_o check_n of_o conscience_n and_o the_o fear_n of_o judgement_n to_o education_n that_o these_o principle_n be_v instill_v into_o we_o from_o the_o beginning_n and_o grow_v up_o with_o we_o into_o confirm_v and_o settle_a prejudices_fw-la and_o i_o ready_o grant_v that_o education_n have_v a_o great_a stroke_n in_o form_v our_o
with_o all_o the_o festival_n expression_n of_o joy_n will_v not_o immediate_o turn_v he_o out_o of_o his_o family_n to_o seek_v his_o fortune_n no_o christ_n have_v shed_v his_o blood_n for_o we_o all_o and_o the_o more_o he_o save_v the_o great_a reward_n he_o have_v of_o his_o suffering_n the_o more_o numerous_a his_o train_n and_o retinue_n of_o redeem_a soul_n be_v and_o number_n add_v to_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o triumph_n this_o may_v convince_v all_o mankind_n how_o merciful_a our_o judge_n will_v be_v and_o if_o we_o must_v be_v judge_v at_o all_o can_v god_n do_v more_o for_o we_o then_o to_o appoint_v the_o man_n christ_n jesus_n who_o be_v our_o saviour_n to_o be_v our_o judge_n but_o then_o consider_v on_o the_o other_o hand_n what_o a_o terrible_a thing_n will_v it_o be_v or_o famine_n or_o such_o other_o judgement_n as_o god_n send_v upon_o the_o earth_n they_o may_v curse_v their_o hard_a fate_n but_o neither_o accuse_v themselves_o nor_o own_o the_o divine_a power_n to_o sinner_n there_o will_v be_v fire_n there_o to_o burn_v they_o but_o no_o worm_n to_o gnaw_v their_o conscience_n no_o inward_a fury_n to_o torment_v they_o the_o justice_n of_o the_o last_o judgement_n which_o will_v stop_v the_o mouth_n of_o sinner_n and_o make_v they_o confess_v their_o own_o gild_n and_o desert_n will_v make_v the_o flame_n of_o hell_n so_o furious_o rage_n and_o devour_v so_o that_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o the_o last_o judgement_n shall_v be_v execute_v by_o a_o visible_a judge_n that_o it_o may_v not_o be_v think_v the_o effect_n of_o chance_n and_o be_v plain_a we_o need_v not_o ascend_v up_o into_o heaven_n for_o it_o we_o have_v the_o counterpart_n of_o those_o record_n in_o our_o own_o breast_n for_o as_o st._n john_n tell_v we_o if_o our_o heart_n condemn_v we_o god_n be_v great_a than_o our_o heart_n and_o know_v all_o thing_n belove_v if_o our_o heart_n condemn_v we_o not_o then_o have_v we_o confidence_n towards_o god_n 1_o john_n 3.20_o 21._o that_o be_v if_o our_o heart_n or_o conscience_n condemn_v we_o than_o god_n will_v condemn_v we_o for_o he_o know_v more_o of_o we_o than_o our_o own_o conscience_n know_v he_o know_v we_o better_o than_o we_o know_v ourselves_o and_o if_o we_o know_v so_o much_o wickedness_n by_o ourselves_o that_o we_o can_v but_o condemn_v ourselves_o though_o every_o man_n be_v a_o favourable_a then_o have_v we_o confidence_n towards_o god_n great_a and_o sure_a hope_n in_o god_n mercy_n that_o he_o will_v not_o condemn_v we_o we_o can_v have_v the_o confidence_n of_o innocent_a man_n because_o we_o have_v be_v sinner_n but_o we_o may_v have_v the_o humble_a confidence_n and_o assure_a hope_n of_o return_v and_o repent_v prodigal_n and_o of_o dutiful_a and_o obedient_a child_n that_o this_o be_v so_o the_o apostle_n authority_n be_v sufficient_a to_o convince_v we_o and_o yet_o if_o the_o apostle_n have_v not_o say_v it_o the_o reason_n and_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n sufficient_o prove_v it_o god_n have_v give_v we_o a_o certain_a rule_n whereby_o we_o shall_v be_v judge_v which_o i_o have_v now_o explain_v to_o you_o and_o therefore_o since_o god_n will_v judge_v we_o by_o this_o rule_n if_o we_o also_o judge_v ourselves_o by_o it_o we_o may_v certain_o know_v what_o judgement_n god_n will_v pass_v on_o we_o for_o neither_o god_n nor_o our_o own_o conscience_n can_v mistake_v in_o their_o judgement_n and_o when_o the_o rule_n be_v the_o same_o and_o there_o can_v be_v no_o mistake_n on_o either_o side_n the_o judgement_n must_v necessary_o be_v the_o same_o and_o then_o the_o same_o judgement_n our_o own_o conscience_n make_v of_o we_o god_n will_v make_v if_o they_o condemn_v we_o god_n will_v condemn_v we_o also_o if_o they_o condemn_v we_o not_o neither_o will_n god_n condemn_v we_o then_o we_o shall_v have_v confidence_n towards_o god_n there_o need_v no_o proof_n of_o this_o if_o you_o will_v but_o confess_v that_o every_o man_n know_v himself_o what_o his_o own_o life_n and_o action_n be_v and_o that_o god_n know_v every_o man_n better_o than_o he_o know_v himself_o if_o we_o know_v ourselves_o and_o know_v our_o rule_n if_o we_o know_v what_o we_o ought_v to_o do_v and_o what_o we_o have_v do_v we_o can_v certain_o tell_v whether_o we_o h●ve_v do_v our_o duty_n or_o not_o if_o our_o own_o conscience_n condemn_v we_o it_o be_v certain_a we_o have_v not_o do_v our_o duty_n that_o we_o either_o do_v what_o we_o know_v we_o ought_v not_o to_o do_v or_o leave_v undo_v what_o we_o know_v we_o ought_v to_o do_v for_o no_o man_n in_o his_o wit_n will_v accuse_v himself_o wrongful_o now_o if_o this_o be_v our_o case_n our_o conscience_n do_v very_o just_o condemn_v we_o and_o then_o god_n who_o know_v we_o as_o perfect_o as_o our_o own_o conscience_n must_v condemn_v we_o also_o for_o a_o guilty_a sinner_n who_o be_v guilty_a to_o his_o own_o conscience_n can_v never_o escape_v the_o condemnation_n of_o a_o just_a and_o righteous_a judge_n if_o he_o know_v his_o guilt_n do_v earthly_a prince_n or_o judge_n as_o certain_o know_v the_o crime_n which_o every_o particular_a man_n be_v guilty_a of_o as_o god_n know_v the_o sin_n of_o all_o man_n with_o all_o their_o particular_a circumstance_n and_o aggravation_n every_o malefactor_n who_o know_v what_o law_n he_o have_v break_v and_o what_o be_v the_o punishment_n of_o the_o breach_n of_o such_o law_n may_v certain_o know_v what_o his_o condemnation_n will_v be_v if_o he_o meet_v with_o a_o righteous_a judge_n but_o earthly_a judge_n do_v not_o always_o know_v man_n personal_a gild_n or_o want_v evidence_n to_o prove_v it_o and_o thus_o many_o criminal_n who_o own_o conscience_n condemn_v they_o may_v escape_v the_o condemnation_n of_o man_n but_o god_n know_v more_o of_o we_o than_o our_o own_o conscience_n and_o needs_o no_o other_o evidence_n against_o we_o but_o our_o own_o science_n to_o condemn_v we_o earthly_a judge_n be_v not_o always_o upright_o in_o their_o judgement_n fear_n or_o favour_n may_v pervert_v their_o justice_n but_o god_n be_v the_o judge_n of_o all_o the_o world_n and_o therefore_o supreme_a rectitude_n and_o justice_n that_o no_o sinner_n can_v hope_v to_o escape_v his_o justice_n who_o own_o conscience_n condemn_v he_o for_o if_o god_n shall_v not_o condemn_v such_o man_n he_o will_v be_v less_o just_a than_o the_o conscience_n of_o a_o sinner_n but_o you_o will_v say_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n may_v pardon_v a_o sinner_n who_o conscience_n condemn_v he_o though_o justice_n can_v i_o answer_v no_o if_o conscience_n condemn_v according_a to_o the_o rule_n of_o the_o gospel_n it_o condemn_v both_o for_o the_o justice_n and_o for_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n for_o the_o gospel_n be_v the_o gospel_n of_o grace_n and_o contain_v all_o the_o mercy_n that_o god_n have_v promise_v to_o sinner_n and_o if_o conscience_n judge_v by_o this_o rule_n condemn_v a_o sinner_n the_o mercy_n of_o god_n will_v not_o save_v to_o be_v sure_a gospel-grace_n and_o mercy_n his_o own_o conscience_n be_v witness_n can_v save_v he_o and_o therefore_o his_o salvation_n be_v hopeless_a while_o he_o continue_v in_o this_o state_n no_o man_n conscience_n which_o be_v not_o disturb_v or_o misguide_a of_o which_o more_o present_o will_v absolute_o condemn_v he_o without_o some_o notorious_a and_o manifest_a guilt_n and_o the_o mercy_n of_o the_o gospel_n can_v save_v such_o a_o man._n he_o must_v be_v conscious_a to_o himself_o that_o he_o live_v in_o the_o commission_n of_o some_o know_a sin_n or_o in_o the_o habitual_a neglect_n of_o some_o know_a duty_n without_o repentance_n and_o reformation_n before_o he_o will_v peremptory_o condemn_v himself_o and_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n will_v not_o pardon_v wilful_a impenitent_a unreformed_a sinner_n thus_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n if_o our_o conscience_n do_v not_o condemn_v we_o than_o we_o have_v confidence_n towards_o god_n if_o we_o have_v a_o conscience_n void_a of_o offence_n both_o towards_o god_n and_o towards_o man_n if_o we_o have_v the_o testimony_n of_o our_o conscience_n that_o in_o simplicity_n and_o godly_a sincerity_n we_o have_v have_v our_o conversation_n in_o this_o world_n if_o we_o serve_v god_n with_o such_o zeal_n and_o vigour_n and_o activity_n if_o we_o this_o will_v give_v we_o a_o secure_a hope_n in_o god_n mercy_n such_o a_o hope_n as_o will_v not_o make_v we_o ashamed_a as_o will_v not_o deceive_v we_o though_o we_o know_v nothing_o by_o ourselves_o as_o st._n paul_n speak_v yet_o be_v we_o not_o hereby_o justify_v he_o that_o judge_v we_o be_v the_o lord_n 1_o cor._n 4.4_o in_o this_o case_n it_o be_v true_a also_o that_o god_n be_v can_v deceive_v we_o for_o if_o we_o judge_v of_o ourselves_o by_o the_o same_o rule_n by_o which_o god_n will_v judge_v we_o every_o man_n know_v himself_o so_o well_o that_o he_o can_v mistake_v by_o one_o rule_n and_o god_n by_o another_o than_o there_o be_v no_o wonder_n if_o their_o judgement_n differ_v if_o god_n condemn_v those_o who_o conscience_n acquit_v they_o and_o absolve_v those_o commend_v they_o for_o do_v that_o which_o be_v very_o wicked_a but_o which_o they_o call_v good_a as_o our_o saviour_n tell_v his_o apostle_n the_o time_n come_v when_o every_o one_o that_o kill_v you_o will_v think_v that_o he_o do_v god_n good_a service_n 16_o joh._n 2._o other_o who_o know_v they_o be_v guilty_a of_o very_o great_a wickedness_n be_v yet_o very_o confident_a of_o their_o for_o their_o salvation_n rapture_n ecstasy_n enthusiasm_n a_o presumptuous_a faith_n in_o christ_n a_o ineffectual_a sorrow_n for_o sin_n some_o arbitrary_a and_o fanciful_a sign_n of_o election_n etc._n etc._n now_o indeed_o these_o man_n conscience_n do_v condemn_v they_o for_o they_o accuse_v they_o of_o great_a wickedness_n but_o they_o will_v not_o believe_v the_o judgement_n of_o their_o own_o conscience_n but_o judge_n of_o their_o final_a state_n by_o their_o own_o mistake_a fancy_n and_o opinion_n and_o therefore_o according_a to_o the_o apostle_n rule_n god_n will_v condemn_v these_o man_n for_o their_o own_o conscience_n condemn_v they_o though_o they_o will_v not_o believe_v the_o judgement_n of_o their_o conscience_n but_o justify_v themselves_o in_o contradiction_n to_o it_o when_o conscience_n condemn_v other_o man_n who_o be_v not_o condemn_v by_o their_o own_o conscience_n that_o be_v who_o can_v charge_v themselves_o with_o any_o great_a guilt_n who_o be_v not_o conscious_a to_o themselves_o that_o they_o have_v live_v in_o any_o know_a sin_n or_o in_o the_o habitual_a neglect_n of_o any_o material_a and_o essential_a part_n of_o their_o duty_n yet_o they_o strong_o fancy_n that_o god_n will_v condemn_v they_o that_o they_o be_v under_o the_o sentence_n of_o reprobation_n that_o they_o have_v sin_v against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n though_o what_o that_o sin_n be_v they_o know_v not_o they_o want_v the_o testimony_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o assure_v they_o of_o their_o election_n they_o have_v never_o feel_v the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n and_o therefore_o they_o fear_v they_o have_v not_o the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n that_o be_v they_o have_v never_o feel_v the_o horror_n and_o agony_n of_o guilty_a sinner_n because_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o the_o blessing_n of_o a_o pious_a and_o virtuous_a education_n they_o have_v always_o be_v preserve_v from_o those_o frightful_a sin_n which_o amaze_v the_o conscience_n and_o therefore_o they_o fear_v it_o be_v but_o a_o false_a peace_n they_o feel_v that_o god_n be_v not_o in_o this_o soft_a and_o calm_a voice_n of_o conscience_n because_o they_o have_v never_o hear_v nor_o see_v the_o thundering_n and_o lightning_n from_o mount_n sinai_n or_o though_o they_o maintain_v a_o great_a reverence_n for_o god_n and_o worship_v he_o with_o all_o humility_n of_o soul_n and_o body_n yet_o they_o do_v not_o feel_v those_o flight_n of_o devotion_n those_o melt_a and_o languish_v passion_n which_o some_o good_a man_n ●eel_v or_o if_o at_o any_o time_n they_o be_v transport_v beyond_o themselves_o and_o feel_v their_o heart_n all_o on_o fire_n with_o love_n and_o devotion_n these_o fit_n be_v but_o short_a these_o boiling_n and_o fermentation_n go_v off_o and_o they_o return_v to_o a_o calm_a and_o even_a temper_n and_o then_o they_o think_v they_o grow_v cold_a and_o that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n have_v forsake_v they_o now_o it_o be_v plain_a also_o that_o these_o man_n conscience_n do_v not_o condemn_v they_o for_o they_o charge_v they_o with_o no_o such_o guilt_n as_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n will_v condemn_v they_o for_o but_o they_o be_v condemn_v only_o by_o false_a opinion_n or_o by_o a_o misguide_a and_o disturb_a fancy_n in_o both_o these_o case_n man_n absolve_v or_o condemn_v themselves_o not_o by_o the_o judgement_n and_o testimony_n of_o conscience_n but_o by_o their_o mistake_a notion_n and_o opinion_n and_o god_n be_v not_o concern_v to_o confirm_v and_o ratify_v such_o a_o judgement_n the_o sum_n be_v this_o when_o st._n john_n tell_v we_o that_o if_o our_o conscience_n condemn_v we_o god_n will_v condemn_v we_o but_o if_o our_o conscience_n do_v not_o condemn_v we_o neither_o will_n god_n condemn_v we_o he_o mean_v by_o conscience_n that_o judgement_n which_o man_n make_v of_o themselves_o by_o compare_v their_o life_n and_o action_n with_o the_o rule_n by_o which_o god_n will_v judge_v we_o for_o conscience_n judge_n not_o by_o make_v new_a and_o arbitrary_a rule_n of_o judgement_n but_o by_o give_v testimony_n to_o our_o life_n and_o action_n the_o judgement_n of_o conscience_n be_v no_o more_o but_o this_o whether_o we_o have_v obey_v or_o disobey_v the_o law_n of_o the_o gospel_n whether_o we_o have_v do_v those_o thing_n which_o the_o gospel_n threaten_v to_o punish_v or_o which_o it_o promise_v to_o reward_v but_o when_o we_o judge_v our_o action_n by_o false_a notion_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a contrary_a to_o the_o gospel_n of_o our_o saviour_n we_o judge_v by_o a_o false_a rule_n and_o then_o our_o judgement_n must_v be_v false_a and_o when_o we_o judge_v ourselves_o not_o by_o the_o nature_n of_o our_o work_n as_o god_n will_v judge_v we_o and_o as_o conscience_n judge_n but_o by_o opinion_n and_o fancy_n and_o some_o arbitrary_a and_o enthusiastic_a mark_n and_o sign_n this_o be_v not_o the_o judgement_n of_o conscience_n which_o judge_n only_o of_o our_o work_n but_o the_o judgement_n of_o private_a opinion_n conceit_n and_o fancy_n and_o though_o god_n will_v judge_v we_o as_o conscience_n judge_n yet_o he_o will_v not_o judge_v we_o as_o opinion_n fancy_n enthusiasm_n or_o melancholy_a judge_v we_o thus_o we_o see_v how_o we_o may_v know_v what_o our_o sentence_n shall_v be_v at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n two_o sort_n of_o man_n may_v certain_o know_v what_o their_o sentence_n shall_v be_v and_o a_o three_o sort_n may_v know_v the_o great_a danger_n they_o be_v in_o if_o they_o will_v but_o listen_v to_o the_o judgement_n of_o their_o own_o conscience_n man_n who_o conscience_n absolute_o condemn_v they_o may_v certain_o expect_v that_o god_n will_v condemn_v they_o for_o when_o their_o guilt_n be_v so_o notorious_a that_o they_o be_v force_v to_o condemn_v themselves_o why_o shall_v they_o think_v that_o a_o just_a and_o righteous_a judge_n will_v not_o condemn_v they_o those_o who_o conscience_n do_v not_o condemn_v they_o shall_v certain_o be_v pardon_v and_o reward_v by_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n those_o who_o conscience_n will_v neither_o condemn_v nor_o absolve_v they_o but_o do_v both_o by_o turn_n be_v in_o a_o very_a doubtful_a and_o hazardous_a state_n their_o salvation_n as_o yet_o be_v very_o uncertain_a and_o it_o concern_v they_o to_o work_v out_o their_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a and_o to_o give_v all_o diligence_n to_o make_v their_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a and_o shall_v not_o this_o teach_v we_o to_o reverence_v the_o judgement_n of_o conscience_n as_o a_o divine_a sentence_n not_o to_o provoke_v our_o conscience_n to_o condemn_v we_o to_o obey_v their_o admonition_n and_o to_o reform_v at_o their_o rebuke_n and_o censure_n what_o will_v sinner_n think_v shall_v they_o hear_v themselves_o condemn_v by_o god_n every_o time_n they_o commit_v a_o know_v and_o wilful_a sin_n and_o yet_o conscience_n be_v the_o tribunal_n of_o god_n judge_n for_o god_n and_o condemn_v we_o in_o god_n name_n and_o by_o his_o authority_n and_o god_n will_v confirm_v and_o execute_v its_o sentence_n and_o therefore_o conscience_n be_v a_o very_a venerable_a judge_n and_o ought_v we_o not_o diligent_o to_o hearken_v to_o that_o judgement_n which_o conscience_n pass_v on_o we_o this_o i_o be_o sure_a be_v of_o vast_a concernment_n both_o to_o bad_a and_o to_o good_a man_n whether_o it_o
