first_o the_o wise_a man_n preface_n to_o this_o purpose_n wherein_o he_o do_v 1._o set_a down_o this_o effect_n of_o wisdom_n as_o experimental_o know_v to_o he_o this_o wisdom_n say_v he_o have_v i_o see_v etc._n etc._n it_o be_v not_o necessary_a hence_o to_o conclude_v that_o the_o follow_a relation_n be_v any_o real_a history_n though_o there_o be_v no_o hazard_n in_o look_v upon_o the_o word_n as_o relate_v to_o some_o particular_a passage_n which_o solomon_n have_v observe_v see_v there_o be_v such_o a_o one_o in_o his_o father_n time_n 2_o sam._n 20.16_o but_o it_o be_v sufficient_a to_o think_v that_o he_o have_v observe_v several_a passage_n in_o his_o time_n wherein_o this_o effect_n of_o wisdom_n be_v verify_v 2._o he_o set_v down_o the_o effect_n of_o his_o observation_n of_o this_o wisdom_n it_o do_v beget_v in_o his_o heart_n a_o very_a high_a esteem_n of_o wisdom_n it_o seem_v great_a to_o i_o say_v he_o next_o he_o set_v down_o the_o suppose_a history_n or_o parable_n wherein_o this_o effect_n of_o wisdom_n do_v shine_v and_o that_o be_v of_o a_o little_a city_n without_o man_n or_o mean_n for_o defence_n of_o it_o great_a force_n be_v raise_v against_o it_o and_o many_o assault_v make_v and_o yet_o one_o man_n poor_a and_o mean_a as_o to_o other_o thing_n endue_v with_o this_o wisdom_n be_v instrumental_a to_o deliver_v the_o city_n which_o be_v not_o bring_v in_o to_o persuade_v man_n that_o every_o one_o endue_v with_o heavenly_a wisdom_n will_v be_v make_v instrumental_a in_o the_o like_o visible_a effect_n but_o it_o be_v sufficient_a to_o commend_v the_o study_n of_o it_o to_o all_o that_o it_o have_v both_o be_v sometime_o so_o blessed_v when_o other_o mean_n have_v be_v want_v and_o that_o if_o the_o lord_n see_v a_o delivery_n good_a for_o his_o people_n the_o study_n of_o this_o wisdom_n be_v the_o best_a way_n to_o obtain_v it_o and_o that_o it_o have_v always_o the_o like_a effect_n in_o a_o spiritual_a sense_n teach_v they_o that_o be_v endue_v with_o it_o the_o way_n of_o delivery_n from_o their_o spiritual_a enemy_n three_o he_o do_v in_o this_o same_o suppose_a history_n hold_v forth_o the_o entertainment_n that_o the_o true_o wise_a may_v expect_v in_o the_o world_n though_o they_o shall_v be_v instrumental_a in_o bring_v about_o the_o great_a outward_a mercy_n to_o worldly_a man_n and_o that_o be_v to_o be_v slight_v and_o no_o man_n say_v he_o remember_v the_o poor_a man._n four_o he_o do_v hence_o draw_v two_o useful_a conclusion_n 1._o that_o wisdom_n be_v better_a than_o strength_n that_o be_v it_o be_v sometime_o more_o blessed_v for_o bring_v about_o even_o outward_a deliverance_n when_o external_a strength_n be_v want_v than_o all_o the_o strength_n in_o the_o world_n without_o this_o wisdom_n 2._o that_o if_o man_n want_v other_o external_a thing_n to_o recommend_v they_o to_o the_o world_n they_o may_v resolve_v to_o be_v slight_v and_o have_v their_o inward_a qualification_n such_o as_o wisdom_n misregarded_a by_o the_o most_o part_n of_o men._n hence_o learn_v 1._o the_o usefulness_n and_o excellency_n of_o that_o wisdom_n which_o be_v from_o above_o be_v not_o only_o to_o be_v see_v by_o the_o read_n and_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n but_o also_o by_o the_o observation_n of_o the_o effect_n which_o the_o same_o be_v blessed_v to_o produce_v both_o to_o they_o that_o be_v endue_v with_o it_o and_o to_o other_o especial_o the_o comfortable_a support_n which_o come_v by_o it_o under_o strait_n and_o the_o sweet_a way_n of_o escape_n and_o outgate_v even_o when_o man_n want_v probable_a outward_a mean_n of_o safety_n and_o delivery_n for_o it_o be_v this_o experimental_a sight_n of_o the_o excellency_n of_o this_o wisdom_n in_o the_o effect_n of_o it_o whereof_o solomon_n here_o speak_v while_o he_o say_v this_o wisdom_n have_v i_o see_v also_o 2._o the_o great_a measure_n of_o true_a wisdom_n any_o have_v the_o great_a esteem_n they_o have_v of_o it_o not_o only_o in_o themselves_o but_o in_o other_o and_o even_o in_o these_o who_o be_v poor_a and_o mean_a and_o have_v no_o other_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n to_o commend_v they_o they_o magnify_v the_o appearance_n and_o effect_n of_o it_o where_o ever_o they_o see_v they_o for_o solomon_n who_o have_v a_o great_a measure_n of_o it_o prize_v it_o high_o even_o in_o a_o poor_a man_n this_o wisdom_n have_v i_o see_v under_o the_o sun_n and_o it_o seem_v great_a to_o i_o 3._o where_o the_o lord_n intend_v delivery_n he_o do_v sometime_o in_o the_o depth_n of_o his_o wisdom_n suffer_v such_o strait_n to_o come_v as_o ruin_n seem_v near_a and_o unavoidable_a that_o man_n may_v learn_v to_o deny_v their_o own_o wit_n and_o power_n 2_o cor._n 1.9_o and_o may_v esteem_v the_o more_o of_o a_o delivery_n when_o it_o be_v bring_v about_o ps_n 126.1_o etc._n etc._n for_o here_o in_o this_o suppose_a history_n or_o parable_n there_o be_v a_o little_a city_n and_o few_o man_n within_o it_o and_o there_o come_v a_o great_a king_n and_o besiege_v it_o and_o build_v great_a bulwark_n against_o it_o whereby_o the_o ruin_n of_o it_o be_v apparent_a and_o yet_o deliverance_n be_v a_o prepare_v and_o work_v for_o it_o 4._o those_o who_o have_v no_o external_a mean_n of_o defence_n or_o delivery_n equal_a to_o the_o power_n employ_v against_o they_o ought_v not_o to_o despair_v of_o a_o delivery_n nor_o think_v it_o impossible_a but_o still_o leave_v room_n to_o god_n to_o find_v out_o the_o way_n though_o they_o do_v not_o see_v it_o neither_o ought_v those_o who_o external_a force_n and_o power_n do_v far_o exceed_v their_o adversary_n and_o have_v improven_v the_o same_o successful_o even_o to_o the_o almost_o gain_v of_o their_o point_n promise_v certain_a success_n to_o themselves_o for_o here_o the_o little_a city_n and_o few_o man_n be_v preserve_v and_o the_o great_a king_n who_o raise_v great_a bulwark_n against_o it_o have_v not_o the_o desire_a success_n for_o the_o city_n be_v deliver_v 5._o the_o lord_n do_v often_o bestow_v the_o most_o excellent_a gift_n of_o the_o mind_n upon_o those_o who_o have_v least_o of_o outward_a gift_n such_o as_o riches_n honour_n and_o the_o like_a that_o all_o may_v know_v he_o do_v not_o value_v these_o outward_a qualification_n as_o he_o do_v the_o inward_a which_o the_o world_n undervalu_v and_o that_o these_o inward_a gift_n may_v be_v see_v to_o be_v his_o and_o free_o bestow_v when_o they_o be_v give_v to_o person_n who_o have_v so_o little_a of_o outward_a thing_n that_o may_v help_v or_o encourage_v in_o the_o acquire_n of_o they_o for_o here_o in_o this_o city_n there_o be_v find_v a_o poor_a wise_a man._n 6._o as_o the_o lord_n do_v sometime_o make_v the_o rise_n of_o a_o people_n delivery_n to_o be_v from_o that_o airth_n whence_o they_o lest_o expect_v it_o so_o when_o he_o intend_v a_o delivery_n to_o a_o community_n where_o he_o have_v some_o of_o his_o own_o he_o do_v ordinary_o make_v some_o of_o those_o instrumental_a in_o the_o bring_n of_o it_o about_o either_o by_o move_v they_o to_o pray_v for_o it_o and_o so_o give_v it_o in_o answer_n to_o their_o prayer_n dan._n 9.2_o 3._o etc._n etc._n or_o by_o suggest_v to_o they_o the_o best_a course_n for_o it_o and_o blessing_n their_o endeavour_n for_o obtain_v of_o it_o 2_o sam._n 20.22_o so_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v think_v a_o great_a advantage_n to_o have_v but_o one_o true_o godly_a person_n in_o a_o society_n see_v where_o any_o such_o be_v if_o a_o delivery_n be_v possible_a the_o lord_n rather_o honour_n they_o than_o other_o to_o be_v instumental_a in_o bring_v it_o about_o for_o here_o the_o poor_a man_n by_o his_o wisdom_n deliver_v the_o city_n 7._o although_o the_o true_o godly_a be_v often_o little_o oblige_v to_o those_o they_o live_v among_o for_o any_o respect_n or_o encouragement_n they_o have_v from_o they_o yet_o be_v it_o their_o duty_n and_o it_o be_v also_o their_o disposition_n to_o employ_v any_o wit_n they_o have_v for_o the_o good_a of_o those_o among_o who_o they_o be_v for_o prevent_v their_o ruin_n that_o they_o may_v have_v time_n to_o repent_v and_o reform_v their_o way_n for_o this_o poor_a wise_a man_n have_v have_v little_a encouragement_n from_o his_o fellow_n citizen_n as_o appear_v by_o what_o be_v speak_v of_o their_o after-carriage_n to_o he_o in_o this_o suppose_a history_n and_o yet_o he_o employ_v his_o wit_n for_o obtain_v a_o delivery_n to_o they_o the_o poor_a man_n by_o his_o wisdom_n deliver_v the_o city_n 8._o so_o little_a do_v worldly_a man_n discern_v the_o beauty_n of_o
duty_n even_o these_o former_o mention_v wherein_o he_o may_v perish_v as_o to_o his_o outward_a be_v and_o concernment_n in_o the_o world_n and_o out_o of_o all_o these_o temptation_n or_o sinful_a word_n which_o be_v here_o translate_v to_o take_v hold_n be_v use_v for_o in_o order_n to_o the_o right_a receive_n of_o the_o former_a direction_n so_o as_o they_o may_v be_v true_o profitable_a he_o say_v it_o be_v good_a that_o thou_o shall_v take_v hold_n of_o this_o 3._o they_o that_o will_v right_o receive_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n so_o as_o they_o may_v find_v true_a comfort_n and_o profit_n by_o it_o must_v put_v their_o hand_n to_o the_o duty_n which_o it_o press_v and_o follow_v they_o close_o notwithstanding_o any_o temporal_a inconvenience_n that_o may_v follow_v thereupon_o which_o be_v perseverance_n in_o welldoing_a for_o this_o solomon_n press_v upon_o they_o that_o have_v hearty_o receive_v the_o truth_n also_o from_o this_o withdraw_v not_o thy_o hand_n 4._o they_o that_o will_v so_o make_v use_n of_o the_o truth_n as_o to_o be_v lead_v by_o it_o to_o their_o happiness_n they_o must_v not_o separat_fw-la the_o direction_n thereof_o but_o must_v take_v hold_v take_v hold_v of_o the_o direction_n of_o the_o word_n and_o be_v not_o by_o suffering_n drive_v from_o the_o obedience_n thereof_o they_o give_v evidence_n that_o they_o have_v in_o their_o heart_n the_o true_a fear_n of_o the_o lord_n as_o the_o principle_n of_o their_o obedience_n for_o have_v exhort_v to_o the_o believe_v and_o obey_v of_o the_o former_a direction_n and_o hold_v out_o a_o promise_n to_o they_o that_o so_o make_v use_n of_o the_o truth_n for_o their_o encouragement_n instead_o of_o describe_v the_o man_n to_o who_o the_o promise_n belong_v from_o his_o obedience_n he_o design_v he_o by_o that_o which_o be_v the_o principle_n of_o his_o obedience_n and_o be_v evidence_v by_o it_o he_o that_o fear_n the_o lord_n shall_v come_v out_o etc._n etc._n 7._o whatever_o hazard_v man_n incur_v for_o fear_n of_o displease_v god_n and_o whatever_o temptation_n they_o be_v assault_v with_o and_o do_v oppose_v lest_o by_o yield_v to_o they_o they_o offend_v he_o they_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o come_v out_o of_o they_o all_o for_o both_o of_o the_o suffering_n and_o temptation_n former_o mention_v solomon_n here_o speak_v while_o he_o say_v he_o that_o fear_n god_n how_o ungodly_a man_n may_v have_v their_o by_o past_a sinfulness_n cover_v rom._n 3.25_o and_o may_v be_v repute_v just_a in_o god_n sight_n isai_n 53.11_o and_o for_o the_o future_a may_v be_v keep_v from_o these_o sinful_a extreme_n former_o mention_v hence_o learn_v 1._o the_o certainty_n of_o a_o delivery_n out_o of_o temptation_n and_o trouble_n shall_v not_o make_v the_o lord_n people_n careless_a or_o shake_v their_o diligence_n in_o the_o study_n of_o heavenly_a wisdom_n which_o discover_v the_o way_n of_o oppose_a temptation_n and_o the_o right_a use_n of_o lawful_a mean_n of_o defence_n against_o outward_a hazard_n for_o have_v promise_v that_o they_o shall_v come_v forth_o of_o all_o those_o he_o now_o commend_v wisdom_n which_o strengthen_v against_o all_o these_o wisdom_n strengthen_v the_o wise_a more_o than_o ten_o mighty_a man_n 2._o no_o man_n wisdom_n can_v set_v he_o beyond_o the_o reach_n of_o assault_n from_o spiritual_a or_o outward_a enemy_n while_o he_o be_v in_o this_o life_n the_o true_o wise_a have_v more_o enemy_n to_o oppose_v than_o any_o city_n in_o the_o world_n have_v as_o be_v suppose_v in_o this_o that_o wisdom_n strenghen_v the_o wise_a more_o than_o ten_o mighty_a man_n which_o be_v in_o the_o city_n 3._o spiritual_a and_o heavenly_a wisdom_n bring_v much_o spiritual_a strength_n to_o the_o soul_n endue_v with_o it_o for_o oppose_a temptation_n and_o endure_a difficulty_n with_o patience_n and_o cheerfulness_n it_o set_v the_o soul_n either_o upon_o the_o use_n of_o some_o approven_v mean_a for_o prevent_v outward_a hazard_n 2_o sam._n 20.16.22_o or_o upon_o the_o right_a way_n of_o bear_v they_o patient_o and_o cheerful_o philip._n 4.12_o and_o lead_v it_o to_o christ_n who_o be_v the_o believer_n strength_n for_o all_o that_o he_o have_v to_o do_v isai_n 45.24_o for_o solomon_n here_o commend_v it_o from_o the_o effect_n of_o it_o wisdom_n strengthen_v the_o wise_a more_o than_o ten_o mighty_a great_a concernment_n sometime_o in_o lesser_a he_o will_v let_v they_o see_v that_o not_o only_o their_o strength_n can_v gain_v the_o day_n or_o the_o victory_n in_o battle_n but_o all_o their_o wit_n can_v gain_v they_o a_o morsel_n of_o bread_n nor_o can_v all_o their_o skill_n gain_v they_o any_o respect_n in_o the_o world_n when_o his_o providence_n do_v not_o favour_v they_o therefore_o do_v he_o instance_n many_o disappointment_n and_o these_o in_o great_a and_o lesser_a matter_n the_o race_n be_v not_o to_o the_o swift_a nor_o the_o battle_n to_o the_o strong_a nor_o bread_n to_o the_o wise_a etc._n etc._n 5._o the_o disappointment_n which_o we_o observe_v man_n of_o great_a activity_n and_o best_a qualification_n for_o their_o undertake_n do_v meet_v with_o shall_v not_o weaken_v the_o hand_n of_o those_o who_o have_v less_o strength_n and_o sewer_a qualification_n in_o follow_v their_o duty_n man_n shall_v esteem_v themselves_o successful_a if_o they_o be_v enable_v for_o their_o duty_n and_o shall_v comfort_v themselves_o in_o this_o that_o their_o obedience_n shall_v be_v reward_v though_o not_o with_o present_a success_n yet_o with_o god_n approbation_n and_o several_a instance_n of_o several_a disappointment_n incident_a to_o man_n who_o have_v most_o strength_n and_o other_o qualification_n most_o promise_a of_o success_n that_o they_o who_o want_v these_o which_o other_o have_v have_v who_o yet_o have_v be_v disappoint_v may_v not_o desert_v their_o duty_n but_o may_v learn_v the_o more_o humble_a dependence_n upon_o god_n the_o race_n be_v heed_n to_o all_o word_n that_o be_v speak_v 2._o they_o that_o have_v other_o under_o they_o as_o their_o servant_n shall_v be_v so_o apprehensive_a of_o temptation_n arise_v from_o their_o low_a condition_n and_o so_o sensible_a of_o what_o themselves_o will_v be_v prone_a to_o if_o they_o be_v in_o their_o case_n that_o though_o they_o may_v suppose_v they_o to_o repine_v and_o sometime_o
