letter_n to_o the_o king_n and_o protest_v with_o all_o humility_n and_o submission_n that_o they_o intend_v nothing_o but_o the_o performance_n of_o their_o oath_n by_o defend_v those_o law_n and_o ordinance_n which_o have_v be_v establish_v in_o parliament_n for_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o king_n and_o the_o realm_n but_o the_o king_n his_o brother_n richard_n and_z edward_z the_o young_a prince_n think_v nothing_o more_o disdainful_a than_o that_o subject_n shall_v rule_v and_o command_v their_o sovereign_n resolve_v to_o revenge_v it_o and_o bid_v utter_a defiance_n to_o the_o lord_n and_o both_o army_n meet_v near_o a_o town_n call_v lewis_n in_o sussex_n where_o a_o cruel_a battle_n be_v fight_v and_o the_o king_n his_o brother_n and_o the_o prince_n be_v all_o take_v prisoner_n with_o many_o other_o great_a commander_n and_o twenty_o thousand_o man_n slay_v yet_o a_o while_n after_o upon_o some_o condition_n they_o be_v all_o three_o set_v at_o liberty_n and_o the_o former_a law_n and_o ordinance_n be_v confirm_v in_o parliament_n and_o the_o king_n take_v a_o oath_n for_o confirm_v the_o power_n of_o the_o twelve_o peer_n after_o which_o the_o earl_n of_o leicester_n and_o gloucester_n the_o two_o general_n of_o the_o lord_n party_n fall_v into_o a_o great_a difference_n which_o prince_n edward_n take_v advantage_n of_o raise_v a_o army_n and_o persuade_v the_o earl_n of_o gloucester_n to_o join_v with_o he_o they_o fall_v upon_o the_o earl_n of_o leicester_n army_n and_o utter_o rout_v they_o himself_z his_o elder_a son_n and_o many_o other_o be_v slay_v which_o overthrow_n utter_o defeat_v the_o baron_n and_o revive_v the_o melancholy_a king_n who_o call_v a_o parliament_n all_o the_o former_a decree_n be_v make_v void_a together_o with_o the_o power_n of_o the_o twelve_o peer_n and_o the_o king_n regain_v his_o former_a liberty_n and_o authority_n when_o this_o parliament_n be_v end_v the_o king_n perhaps_o by_o the_o instigation_n of_o his_o brother_n richard_n who_o be_v so_o horrid_o abuse_v without_o cause_n by_o the_o base_a sort_n of_o the_o inhabitant_n of_o the_o city_n resolve_v utter_o to_o destroy_v and_o consume_v the_o city_n of_o london_n by_o fire_n because_o he_o say_v the_o magistrate_n and_o inhabitant_n have_v always_o hate_v he_o and_o take_v part_n with_o the_o lord_n against_o he_o whereupon_o those_o of_o the_o nobility_n who_o be_v most_o in_o favour_n with_o the_o king_n humble_o beseech_v he_o by_o no_o mean_n to_o do_v such_o a_o execrable_a deed_n which_o will_v not_o only_o weaken_v his_o own_o kingdom_n and_o government_n but_o will_v likewise_o make_v he_o infamous_a throughout_o the_o world_n to_o all_o generation_n they_o be_v very_o earnest_a in_o their_o suit_n and_o their_o reason_n be_v unanswerable_a yet_o the_o king_n prore_v that_o he_o be_v resolve_v to_o do_v it_o and_o his_o determination_n shall_v be_v unchangeable_a and_o his_o justice_n upon_o such_o rebellious_a villain_n shall_v be_v a_o precedent_n to_o deter_v all_o perverse_a and_o obstinate_a rebel_n and_o traitor_n in_o time_n to_o come_v this_o severe_a resolution_n make_v the_o citizen_n tremble_v at_o the_o indignation_n of_o their_o angry_a king_n so_o that_o perceive_v his_o rage_n and_o fury_n not_o to_o be_v mitigate_v they_o cause_v a_o instrument_n to_o be_v draw_v in_o writing_n which_o be_v confirm_v with_o their_o common_a seal_n wherein_o they_o confess_v their_o rebellion_n and_o humble_o crave_v pardon_n for_o the_o same_o and_o without_o any_o exception_n or_o reservation_n they_o whole_o submit_v their_o land_n good_n and_o life_n together_o with_o the_o whole_a city_n to_o the_o king_n grace_n and_o mercy_n this_o instrument_n they_o send_v to_o windsor_n to_o the_o king_n by_o some_o of_o the_o chief_a of_o the_o citizen_n who_o be_v order_v to_o present_v it_o on_o their_o knee_n but_o so_o furious_a be_v the_o king_n wrath_n against_o they_o and_o so_o implacable_a be_v his_o anger_n that_o he_o repute_v none_o to_o be_v his_o friend_n who_o interpose_v as_o mediator_n on_o their_o behalf_n neither_o will_v he_o admit_v any_o of_o they_o into_o his_o presence_n but_o command_v they_o immediate_o to_o be_v throw_v into_o prison_n and_o five_o of_o the_o principal_a of_o they_o he_o give_v to_o the_o prince_n together_o with_o all_o their_o land_n and_o good_n and_o all_o the_o rest_n he_o bestow_v among_o his_o attendant_n who_o make_v they_o slave_n and_o suffer_v they_o to_o enjoy_v the_o least_o part_n of_o their_o own_o but_o when_o the_o king_n have_v thus_o a_o little_a revenge_v himself_o and_o time_n have_v cool_v his_o mighty_a passion_n he_o begin_v to_o hearken_v to_o the_o importunate_a intercession_n of_o prince_n edward_n his_o son_n and_o soon_o after_o receive_v the_o city_n and_o all_o its_o inhabitant_n into_o favour_n again_o and_o lay_v only_o a_o fine_a upon_o they_o of_o a_o thousand_o mark_n he_o restore_v to_o they_o all_o their_o charter_n liberty_n and_o custom_n which_o for_o their_o transgression_n he_o have_v seize_v into_o his_o hand_n and_o now_o though_o these_o intestine_a trouble_n and_o civil_a war_n which_o like_o a_o outrageous_a fire_n disperse_v into_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o well_o compact_a city_n have_v end_n anger_v the_o whole_a state_n of_o the_o kingdom_n be_v thus_o appease_v
