the_o answer_n command_v by_o his_o majesty_n to_o be_v give_v by_o the_o right_n honourable_a the_o earl_n of_o nottingham_n l_o d_o h._n chancellor_n of_o england_n upon_o several_a address_n present_v to_o his_o majesty_n in_o council_n at_o hampton-court_n the_o 19_o the_o of_o may_n 1681._o his_o majesty_n have_v consider_v the_o several_a address_n which_o have_v be_v now_o present_v to_o he_o and_o command_v i_o to_o return_v these_o answer_n to_o them_o first_o i_o be_o to_o let_v the_o commissioner_n of_o the_o lieutenancy_n know_v that_o his_o majesty_n do_v very_o well_o accept_v and_o approve_v the_o address_n they_o have_v make_v and_o think_v that_o zeal_n with_o which_o they_o have_v express_v their_o loyalty_n and_o good_a affection_n to_o his_o person_n and_o government_n to_o be_v at_o this_o time_n a_o very_a seasonable_a piece_n of_o duty_n and_o service_n and_o do_v hearty_o thank_v they_o for_o it_o to_o the_o gentleman_n of_o the_o borough_n of_o southwark_n his_o majesty_n do_v not_o only_o give_v his_o hearty_a thanks_o but_o declare_v himself_o to_o be_v extreme_o well_o please_v with_o the_o form_n of_o their_o address_n and_o think_v they_o proceed_v upon_o the_o true_a and_o the_o sure_a ground_n that_o can_v be_v when_o they_o lay_v it_o down_o for_o a_o maxim_n that_o steady_a loyalty_n be_v the_o only_a foundation_n of_o true_a felicity_n and_o i_o be_o to_o assure_v you_o both_o that_o his_o majesty_n will_v always_o retain_v a_o gracious_a remembrance_n of_o your_o good_a service_n and_o that_o you_o shall_v not_o fail_v to_o find_v the_o effect_n of_o it_o whenever_o you_o shall_v apply_v yourselves_o to_o his_o majesty_n for_o his_o favour_n as_o for_o that_o other_o address_n which_o style_v itself_o the_o humble_a petition_n of_o the_o l._n mayor_n aldermen_z and_o commons_o of_o the_o city_n of_o london_n in_o common_a council_n assemble_v and_o which_o be_v very_o much_o discredit_v by_o these_o other_o address_n which_o accompany_v it_o i_o have_v many_o thing_n in_o command_n to_o say_v to_o it_o the_o king_n do_v expect_v that_o a_o petition_n which_o seem_v to_o come_v from_o the_o mayor_n aldermen_z and_o common-councel_n of_o the_o city_n of_o london_n shall_v have_v consist_v of_o such_o matter_n only_o as_o relate_v to_o the_o particular_a concern_v of_o the_o city_n at_o least_o he_o think_v he_o shall_v have_v find_v in_o it_o some_o due_a acknowledgement_n of_o his_o continual_a care_n in_o preserve_v and_o improve_n your_o trade_n and_o support_v your_o liberty_n and_o franchise_n but_o contrary_a to_o his_o expectation_n and_o as_o he_o think_v to_o your_o duty_n he_o find_v this_o petition_n meddle_v with_o matter_n of_o state_n and_o government_n thing_n which_o do_v in_o no_o sort_n appertain_v to_o you_o but_o be_v quite_o out_o of_o your_o sphere_n and_o if_o this_o shall_v pass_v without_o reproof_n the_o mean_a corporation_n nay_o the_o mean_a village_n in_o england_n will_v have_v as_o much_o right_a to_o be_v meddle_v in_o these_o matter_n as_o you_o have_v the_o only_a end_n and_o use_v of_o common-councel_n in_o london_n be_v for_o the_o business_n of_o london_n you_o be_v not_o the_o common-council_n of_o the_o nation_n and_o yet_o you_o behave_v yourselves_o so_o as_o if_o you_o think_v you_o be_v but_o the_o king_n do_v not_o look_v upon_o this_o petition_n as_o proceed_v from_o the_o unanimous_a consent_n of_o the_o common-councel_n he_o be_v very_o well_o inform_v that_o it_o pass_v there_o by_o a_o inconsiderable_a majority_n but_o fourteen_o vote_n in_o the_o whole_a and_o against_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o major_a part_n of_o the_o court_n of_o alderman_n and_o his_o majesty_n have_v a_o great_a value_n and_o kindness_n for_o the_o honesty_n and_o discretion_n of_o those_o who_o dissent_v from_o it_o and_o he_o look_v upon_o the_o rest_n as_o mislead_v by_o some_o ill_a man_n who_o make_v it_o their_o business_n to_o begin_v that_o confusion_n in_o the_o city_n which_o they_o see_v no_o hope_n of_o begin_n elsewhere_o and_o the_o king_n do_v not_o believe_v that_o the_o matter_n of_o this_o petition_n be_v ever_o well_o consider_v by_o you_o because_o he_o find_v in_o it_o so_o many_o presumption_n and_o mistake_v it_o pray_v the_o call_v of_o a_o parliament_n at_o a_o time_n when_o the_o king_n have_v already_o declare_v to_o all_o the_o world_n that_o there_o shall_v be_v frequent_a parliament_n and_o so_o seem_v to_o doubt_v of_o that_o assurance_n which_o all_o good_a subject_n give_v the_o king_n most_o humble_a thanks_o for_o it_o pray_v a_o continuation_n of_o that_o parliament_n till_o all_o their_o business_n be_v dispatch_v and_o so_o break_v in_o upon_o the_o high_a trust_n which_o be_v lodge_v in_o the_o king_n to_o who_o alone_o it_o belong_v to_o appoint_v the_o time_n and_o season_n it_o deprive_v the_o king_n of_o the_o whole_a honour_n of_o his_o grace_n and_o goodness_n in_o call_v a_o parliament_n by_o make_v it_o seem_v to_o be_v the_o effect_n of_o your_o importunity_n so_o that_o nothing_o in_o the_o world_n can_v be_v more_o contrary_a to_o the_o seem_a end_n of_o this_o address_n than_o the_o address_v itself_o and_o beside_o all_o this_o the_o king_n take_v notice_n of_o another_o expression_n in_o your_o address_n wherein_o you_o pretend_v to_o be_v much_o trouble_v that_o certain_a pamphlet_n have_v late_o come_v out_o which_o speak_v very_o dishonourable_o of_o the_o proceed_n of_o the_o two_o last_o parliament_n now_o the_o king_n will_v have_v be_v glad_a you_o have_v mention_v what_o pamphlet_n you_o mean_v lest_o otherwise_o the_o world_n suppose_v you_o to_o have_v a_o secret_a meaning_n in_o this_o general_a expression_n such_o a_o meaning_n as_o no_o honest_a man_n or_o good_a subject_n dare_v own_o and_o the_o king_n will_v have_v be_v glad_a too_o that_o you_o have_v likewise_o take_v notice_n of_o such_o other_o pamphlet_n as_o defame_v his_o majesty_n person_n and_o government_n and_o libel_v all_o the_o order_n and_o constitution_n both_o of_o church_n and_o state_n but_o it_o seem_v your_o curiosity_n have_v be_v very_o great_a to_o look_v after_o some_o kind_n of_o pamphlet_n but_o your_o diligence_n have_v be_v very_o little_a when_o you_o shall_v have_v look_v after_o the_o rest_n and_o have_v punish_v the_o seditious_a notwithstanding_o all_o this_o the_o king_n it_o still_o of_o opinion_n that_o there_o be_v but_o very_o few_o among_o you_o who_o deserve_v these_o reproof_n he_o be_v not_o only_o confident_a of_o the_o affection_n of_o the_o city_n in_o general_n as_o know_v that_o no_o prince_n ever_o deserve_v better_o of_o his_o people_n but_o he_o believe_v the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o court_n of_o alderman_n and_o of_o the_o common-councel_n too_o if_o they_o have_v all_o be_v present_a to_o be_v very_o much_o addict_v to_o his_o service_n if_o therefore_o there_o be_v any_o among_o you_o who_o seek_v to_o make_v division_n he_o hope_v you_o will_v mark_v they_o and_o avoid_v they_o and_o that_o you_o will_v study_v to_o be_v quiet_a and_o to_o do_v your_o own_o business_n for_o the_o king_n have_v set_v his_o heart_n upon_o this_o city_n to_o do_v they_o all_o the_o good_a he_o can_v and_o it_o be_v only_o the_o peace_n of_o his_o government_n which_o can_v bring_v you_o any_o prosperity_n the_o king_n therefore_o recommend_v it_o to_o you_o and_o require_v it_o of_o you_o to_o take_v effectual_a care_n that_o there_o be_v no_o kind_n of_o disturbance_n or_o disorder_n among_o you_o london_n print_v by_o the_o assign_v of_o john_n bill_n thomas_n newcomb_n and_o henry_n hill_n printer_n to_o the_o king_n most_o excellent_a majesty_n 1681._o
